What is Parents' Saturday
These are special days in Orthodoxy for commemorating the dead. Translated from Greek, Saturday means “intercession,” which is why on such days it is customary to remember one’s deceased parents and loved ones.
They remember those who have departed into the world with a different prayer and memorial service.
Memorial days 2018 in Ukraineafter Easter
On the 49th day after Easter passes Trinity Parents' Saturday. It precedes the revelation of the Kingdom of Christ in all its power on the day of Pentecost, as well as the beginning of the Apostolic Fast.
It is also called ecumenical, since on this day ecumenical memorial services are served in all Orthodox churches; they are dedicated to the remembrance of all deceased Orthodox Christians without exception.

The latter is no less significant than Trinity. This is the Saturday before November 8 - the day of remembrance of the Holy Great Martyr Demetrius of Thessaloniki. If the day of remembrance of this saint also falls on a Saturday, then the Saturday that was before the day of remembrance is still considered the parent's day.
Parents' Saturday: what to do
These days it is customary to remember relatives with prayer and a memorial dinner. On Trinity Parental Saturday they pray especially earnestly for those who died untimely and in a foreign country, far from their relatives, for those who did not have time to repent before death, and for whom no funeral rites were performed.
Believers go to church, ordering services there for the repose of deceased relatives. It is better to submit notes on the eve of the liturgy for a registered magpie with the names of relatives. At the same time, notes are submitted only to people baptized in the Orthodox faith.
If possible, you can visit the cemetery on this day, visiting the graves of relatives and friends. But in no case should you visit the cemetery instead of a memorial service - the priests insist that going to the cemetery is more desirable than obligatory, but attending the service or, at a minimum, reading funeral prayers at home is mandatory. According to them, holding a service in a church is more important than going to a cemetery, because prayer for dead people is much more important than visiting a grave.
Parents' Saturday: what not to do
According to folk traditions, on parental Saturday before Trinity, you cannot do housework, including even washing dishes.
The clergy, in turn, do not insist on a work ban. According to them, it is enough that household chores do not interfere with prayer and visiting temple.

Trinity Saturday is associated with the commemoration of the souls of the departed. From time immemorial, it was considered the most important day for honoring not only one’s ancestors, but also all Christians who have ever died. Now this holiday can be viewed from the perspective of Orthodoxy and paganism, since ancient pre-Christian rituals were partially transferred and combined with new church traditions. The holiday of Trinity itself has a very important meaning and a special sacred meaning. It is also celebrated in other Christian countries.
Trinity Parents' Saturday
The Day of Remembrance of the Dead before Trinity is called Ecumenical Parental Saturday. It is called universal because all dead Christians are commemorated, starting with Adam and Eve. This is very important to understand, since commemoration is given even to suicides for whom the church does not perform a funeral service. There are only two such Ecumenical Parental Saturdays a year: Meat Saturday, on the Saturday before Maslenitsa, and Trinity, on the Saturday before Trinity.
It is not for nothing that such veneration of deceased relatives is associated with the holiday of Trinity. The very day of the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles marks the complete salvation of people and is considered the beginning of the apostolic church. This means that today's church has continuity from the apostles; in the Orthodox Church, continuity of the rank of clergy is also implied. In fact, this is how the grace of the Holy Spirit is transmitted. It is completely natural that a person who loves his family and cares about past generations remembers them on such an important day. After all, he does this with the faith that the Holy Spirit will descend on the souls of his deceased relatives, opening the gates of Paradise for them.
Beliefs on Trinity Saturday
In many places in Belarus, Ukraine and Russia it was believed that on this day mermaids come out of the water and stay on land all summer. That's why it was worth being as careful as possible: otherwise you could fall for their tricks. To protect against mermaids, they collected nettle or wormwood - after all, it has truly unique magical properties. From that time on, the girls did not go to the field one at a time, so that the mermaids would not be caught and tickled to death. Our ancestors believed that on this day drowned women made swings from birch branches and swung on them. Young people even decorated them with colored ribbons to appease the aquatic undead.
Often they organized the following peculiar ritual: boys and girls took birch branches in their hands and, with roll calls, laughter and cheerful enthusiasm, ran across the field, chasing mermaids. On the one hand, in this way they allegedly drove away the water maidens, saving themselves and their families from trouble. On the other hand, it was believed that where the mermaid’s foot touched the ground, there would be fertile soil.
That evening, huge bonfires were lit along the rivers so that the merman would not riot and lead the reservoir beyond the banks. They believed that at midnight he raised the water so high that it was higher than the mountains. Hearing the songs and watching people walking, he calmed down, and everything fell into place.
On this day, they were sure to go to the graves of their relatives and decorate them with greenery. Special ritual meals were also held there. They believed that the souls of the dead were, as it were, “released” for a while, and they communicated with them. Of course, the Orthodox Church condemned some of these customs, considering them literally satanic. However, people still followed the ancient tradition of honoring their ancestors.
The following fortune-telling was common in Ukraine: on Trinity Saturday, an aspen tree was cut down and brought into the house, leaving it there for the whole night. In the morning we woke up and looked at what condition she was in. If the leaves are green, although dried, then all household members could be sure that they would live from this day on for at least another year. If there are blackened leaves, then this year there will most likely be a loss in the family.

On the Day of Pentecost, the redemption of the world was sealed by the sanctifying and perfecting power of the life-giving Holy Spirit, graciously and savingly extended to the living and the dead. On this day, all relatives gather under one roof. First they attend the morning service at the temple.
You need to light a candle, write a note with the names of the deceased, using church names, and pray for the salvation of their souls. Then the relatives go to the cemetery to visit the graves of the dead and bring them gifts. You need to take with you fresh flowers and greenery to decorate the burial site. And a few days before this, it is recommended to put things in order on the graves, remove all garbage, clean monuments and crosses.
After visiting the cemetery, everyone spends this day at the festive table. The evening is spent reminiscing and talking about the deceased. These are only good and bright stories; you can’t talk about bad things on such a day. To protect the animals, they are fumigated this Saturday - then the cattle will not be afraid of thunderstorms. It is also customary to bless medicinal herbs on this day.
All Souls' Day, which falls on the Saturday before Trinity Day, is the main spring-summer memorial day in the Orthodox Church.
In the church calendar it is called Ecumenical Parental Saturday. During the ecumenical memorial service on this day, the Church commemorates all Orthodox Christians who have ever died.
The commemoration of all dead pious Christians was established on the Saturday before Pentecost due to the fact that the event of the descent of the Holy Spirit completed the economy of human salvation, and also participate in this salvation. Therefore, the Church, sending up prayers on Pentecost for the revitalization of all living by the Holy Spirit, asks on the very day of the holiday that for the departed the grace of the all-holy and all-sanctifying Spirit of the Comforter, which they were granted during their lifetime, would be a source of bliss, since by the Holy Spirit “everyone is given life” .
Therefore, the Church devotes the eve of the holiday, Saturday, to the remembrance of the departed and prayer for them. The saint, who composed the touching prayers of Vespers of Pentecost, says in them that the Lord especially on this day is pleased to accept prayers for the dead and even for “those kept in hell.”
Trinity Saturday is associated with the founding of the Church by the Trinity and the Descent of the Holy Spirit. We pray for the departed, that the Lord would forgive them, and we believe that the Spirit of God touches not only those who live and pray, but also those who have died. Our loved ones have gone into another world with passions, vices, sins, and we pray and ask the Spirit of God, whom God sent, we ask Christ the Savior to have mercy on them. On the eve of Trinity Saturday, on Friday evening, parastas are served in our Church. “Parastas”, from Greek, “intercession” - during this service they intercede for their departed, the Church, and the Lord Himself said this, saves sinners.
We beg God for forgiveness for the departed, because they can no longer beg for anything for themselves, they can pray for us, but not for themselves: “Help, Lord, rest, Lord, the souls of the departed Thy servant, forefather, father, sisters, our brethren, the Orthodox who lie here and everywhere.” The Orthodox ask on behalf of the Church that the Lord have mercy on those who left in the faith and hope of the Resurrection. Through the prayer of the Church, grace develops to such a state that helps the soul of the deceased leave the bonds of hell.
On the day of Trinity Parental Saturday, it is customary to go to a service where the 17th kathisma is read. It commemorates all departed Christians (from the ages). Such general prayer is very important for the deceased. In the evening, the 17th kathisma can be read at home.
Trinity Saturday has its deepest sacred meaning and will not lose it until the end of time, therefore memorial Saturdays are extremely necessary. Among the people, everyone knows the memorial Saturdays of the second, third, fourth of Lent, Trinity Parental Saturday, Demetrius Saturday, Radonitsa.
Many people have a desire to remember their deceased with notes; the priest reads them and says: “Lord, remember him in Your Kingdom.” Coming to a grave, giving alms, doing a good deed, saying a kind word is also alms in our time for those who died untimely.
Trinity Saturday is also called parental Saturday, because our parents are closest to us in the flesh, so we begin the commemoration with our deceased parents. In a church memorial note, we first write the names of deceased parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers, and remember relatives. The concept of “parental Saturday” is associated with blood ties that are close to us.
Parents' days give us the joy of prayerful communication in God with those who have passed on from this life. That’s why we love parents’ Saturdays, where we remember our deceased parents, benefactors, and relatives. We come to the Liturgy, submit notes to the Proskomedia, and pray at the Memorial Service. What more can we do for our dear departed? Give abundant alms, strengthen your home prayer for them, and prepare a special funeral dish, kutiya.
Orthodox Christians are not forbidden to visit the cemetery on this day to venerate the graves of their relatives after they have been remembered in church. After all, when we pray for the souls of those who have passed on to another world, it is generally accepted that they, at that moment in heaven, are praying for us.
