Do-it-yourself snow shield. Homemade world - snow scraper on wheels. Clearing the area from snow: a comparative review of snow removal equipment

On the eve of winter, I decided to make myself a manual snow scraper. Basic conditions: ease of use without the use of great physical effort and maximum cheapness in production. Since the scraper is necessary for clearing the snow from the sidewalk in front of the house, the area in front of the garage and the internal courtyard paths, I swept away the “Snow Scraper on Skids” immediately, because. it is more suitable for cleaning ice fields, but the runners will have to be dragged with great effort on asphalt and soil. Therefore, it was decided to make a snow scraper on wheels.

The question of what to make the scraper blade out of was resolved immediately; I had a piece of pipe with a diameter of 27 cm, I cut a sector out of it and after processing it turned out to be a finished blade. An old baby stroller was found to make a frame with a handle. Stops made from old ones water pipes, on one side I made slots in them for the wheel axle, and on the other side I welded them to the blade of the scraper blade. I made ears from metal corners for attaching the racks; they were also welded to the blade of the scraper-dozer. To facilitate the design for the racks, I did not use water pipes, I found thin-walled bronze pipes in my garage. I tried it on in place, cut it to the required size and drilled holes at the ends for M6 bolts. At the upper ends of the racks I drilled three more holes of the same diameter to be able to adjust the height of the handle. In order to avoid scratching concrete and asphalt pavements and curbs, a piece of conveyor belt was attached with self-tapping screws to the bottom of the scraper blade. After assembly, I painted it to give it a more or less decent appearance.
I do not provide drawings and specific dimensions and recommendations, because... everything was done “in the Russian way” - not a peephole and from scrap, which had long been asking for scrap metal and a landfill.
Now I'll wait for snow for testing. I'll describe the results.
Attention: to enlarge pictures, just move your mouse cursor over the picture and wait 1-2 seconds.

Continuation: Finally, decent snow has fallen, you can start testing the effectiveness of your homemade scraper blade for snow.

The first impression of working with it is excellent; cleaning snow is surprisingly easy and pleasant. The snow was indeed freshly fallen, not compacted. Thanks to the conveyor belt, the scraper moves well along the ground and does not get stuck on uneven surfaces. In a word, the design turned out to be successful. Even my wife couldn’t stand it, she took the scraper from me and started cleaning the area. According to her, our snow scraper is much better than any shovel.

Conclusion: The design of the snow scraper on wheels turned out to be very successful, although improvements are possible.

One of the possible directions for improvement: Make a variable angle of the blade from zero to about 35 degrees, so that it can be used not only as a scraper, but also as a bulldozer-type scraper. True, this will complicate the design a little. I definitely won’t be doing this in the near future, since I am completely satisfied with the ready-made option.

During the cold season, it often happens that all the roads are covered with snow; it needs to be removed for comfortable movement. Cleaning snow is not the easiest task, it often gets tiring, but it is worth doing it regularly to avoid the appearance of large snowdrifts. But if you build a scraper, then removing snow becomes easier. Today we will look at how to build such equipment on...

  • First you need to purchase a pipe, the diameter of which should be about two hundred and seventy millimeters; it will serve as a blade for cleaning.

  • Next, we find old metal pipes that will serve as a support. Wheels and a blade should be attached to the pipes.
  • To make the equipment as convenient as possible, care should be taken to adjust the height of the handles.

  • We mount a little transport tape to the bottom of the blade.

This equipment is quite easy to use, and you don’t need a lot of materials to create it.

Types of scrapers

One of the most popular types of scraper is brush scraper. A brush is often made from bristles. Such equipment should not be particularly heavy, since with a lot of weight it is much harder to work with it.

The plastic scraper is superior to the previous version due to its light weight and ease of use. Also, snow does not stick to it. Since it will be light, it can be made very wide to capture most territories.

How to make a metal scraper

1. First you need a metal sheet, its size should be one hundred and fifty centimeters in height and eighty centimeters in width. Also metal pipe up to three meters long, which will serve as a handle, and two corners one meter long for runners.

3. We secure the upper part of the scraper with clamps, which will help in adjusting the required height.

Equipment for cleaning snow can be create it in such a way that it can then be compactly folded in case it needs to be transported to the country, or so that it does not take up much space. With its help, it is very easy to remove snow, and it is also easy to do it yourself.

This simple tool becomes an indispensable assistant for a person. After a snowfall, without a good shovel, it’s not easy to get to the porch of the house, drive into the garage or get into the barn.

Some might say that snow removal equipment hasn't changed since his grandfather went to school. In fact, the tools for dealing with snowdrifts have been continuously improved, making our work easier.

Today we will look at various options shovels for snow removal and get acquainted with their features. We will give recommendations for selection, indicate approximate prices and let you know useful tips for do-it-yourselfers.

Types of shovels for snow removal

The classic design of a snow shovel is familiar to everyone. This is a long handle-handle on which a wide bucket is attached.

Classic wooden shovel

Until recently, two materials were used to make ladles and handles: wood and metal (steel and aluminum).

Today they have been supplemented by composite plastic, resistant to frost and mechanical stress.

Anyone who has worked with a plastic shovel probably appreciated its main advantage - light weight. It does not get wet from snow like wood and does not rust like steel. There are doubts about the durability of plastic, but it is usually enough for 4-5 cleaning seasons.

A compact snow shovel is called a car snow shovel. Drivers use it to clear parking lots and enter garages. For ease of transportation in the trunk, such tools are made folding, dismountable, or placed on telescopic handles.

Folding car shovel

A shovel with a telescopic handle is convenient to transport and can be easily adjusted to a person’s height

The second popular type of snow removal tool is a scraper or drag (motor). It differs from its relative in its wide arched handle and impressive width of the bucket.

The element of this design is light and loose snow. You cannot use a snow scraper on compacted and frozen crust. Here you have to use an ordinary shovel according to the principle “slowly but surely.”

In search of a compromise, designers developed a hybrid of a snow shovel and scraper. It is equally suitable for throwing snow and moving it.

Combined shovel-scraper

Moving on to mechanized models, let's consider a snow blower with an auger. Its advantage over the “old-fashioned” tool is ease of use. No strain on the lower back. You push the bucket in front of you, and the auger rotates and throws the snow to the side.

Unfortunately, this mechanism can only work confidently with a thin layer of loose snow (up to 15 cm). A thicker layer stops the auger.

In the category of super-shovels for snow removal, you can include a device called a manual bulldozer. This is a four-wheel dolly with a blade. Large working width and the ability to work in full height, make a mobile shovel an indispensable assistant when cleaning large areas.

The power of a manual bulldozer is 1 human power!

The angle of rotation of the blade here is adjustable, allowing you to work with both light and loose snow and fairly heavy snow.

A simplified version of a snow shovel on wheels is a two-wheeled model. It is less productive, but very convenient to use. The wheel axle allows you to raise the blade during operation, avoiding impacts on uneven road surfaces.

Among the unusual design solutions one can note a single-wheeled shovel. It is not yet available in our stores. It was invented in the West and dubbed the “snow wolf.” The externally awkward design, according to reviews from the owners, is very maneuverable and easy to use.

Single-wheel shovel with swinging handle

The essence of the idea is to use a large wheel, on the axis of which a handle is hinged. On one side it ends with bicycle “horns”, and on the other it is connected to a plastic bucket. Scooping up snow, its owner moves around the site. Approaching the storage area, he sharply lowers the handles. The bucket rises and throws the collected snow forward. In this case, there is no need to constantly bend over, tiring your back muscles.

The next level of design “pumping” is an electric snow shovel.

The principle of its operation is simple: an electric motor rotates a rubber auger, which throws the snow to the side. This mechanism is good when you need to remove thin snow cover. It is not suitable for dealing with snowdrifts and ice.

Despite the durability and strength of metal, today plastic shovels are becoming the leaders in demand. As we have already said, they are lighter than steel and wood. This fact is of paramount importance when cleaning a large area.

Choosing plastic shovel, you should pay attention to the depth of the bucket and the presence of a protective lining on its working edge. A spacious bucket speeds up the cleaning process, and a protective edging protects the plastic from wear.

The quality of the plastic is checked very simply: the tool is placed at an angle on the floor and the handle is pressed firmly on it. If the bucket is elastically deformed without cracking, then the product will not break due to frequent contact with compacted snow.

The D-shaped handle increases ease of use. It increases the force of the throw and prevents the hand from slipping off the handle. The presence of longitudinal ribs on the bucket is another plus in favor of the purchase. They increase rigidity and improve tool sliding.

The following should be said about the material. A wooden shovel with a plywood bucket is inferior to a plastic one. Wet snow quickly sticks to it, increasing the weight of the instrument. Contact with moisture causes the plywood to swell and become deformed.

Aluminum shovels occupy a middle position between wooden and plastic ones. They are light, strong and durable, but very expensive.

Steel buckets are the most reliable, but also the heaviest. With such equipment you can work on dense snow and knock down thin ice.

Having decided on the material, you should pay attention to the length of the handle (handle). It should not be too short so that you do not have to work while bending low.

You need to buy a scraper for snow removal that is as light as possible, so that you are less tired when cleaning a large area. It should be equipped with wheels or “skis” - two protruding bars on the bottom of the bucket. They reduce friction on the snow, making it easier to move the tool.

Approximate prices

The simplest plywood shovel can be purchased at a price of 150 rubles.

The cost of a snow removal tool with a steel bucket and a wooden handle starts at 300 rubles per piece.

DIY snow shovel

There is nothing complicated in the design of a snow shovel. Therefore, you can do it yourself at home.

Let's look at the two most popular options among DIYers:

  • plywood shovel;
  • scraper (engine) on wheels.

Having prepared all the materials necessary for the work, you can make a snow shovel with your own hands from plywood within 1 hour.

The set of parts for assembly includes:

  • A wooden strip with a cross-section of 30x40 mm (length 1.5 meters) for making a handle.
  • Plywood sheet 5 mm thick and 40x40 cm in size.
  • Trim pine boards 3 cm thick and 40 cm long.
  • A strip of galvanized steel 5-6 cm wide.
  • Wood screws 3 cm long for attaching the handle to the plywood.
  • Nails 15-20 mm long.

The tools you will need are an electric plane, a hacksaw, metal scissors, pliers, a chisel, a hammer and a screwdriver.

The first operation is to make the back wall of the bucket from scrap boards. To do this, draw an arc on the workpiece with a pencil. Its height in the center is 10 cm, and at the edges 5 cm.

Having planed the intended outline with a plane, take a hacksaw and make two cuts in the center of the board according to the size of the future cutting. Use a chisel to cut out a rectangular hole for the handle to pass through.

The edge of the cutting is marked with a pencil and cut with a hacksaw so that it fits tightly to the plywood sheet.

A sheet of plywood is placed on the wall of the bucket and secured with nails.

The steel strip is cut to the size of the bucket, its edge is bent and screwed to the bottom. Pieces of steel strip are used to strengthen the place where the handle is attached to a sheet of plywood and the area where it passes through back wall ladle.

To strengthen the working edge, bend the strip in half, put it on plywood and bend the edges of the metal. To prevent the strip from jumping off the bucket during operation, it is secured at the edges with short screws or rivets.

Now let’s look at making the second design option - a homemade snow shovel on two wheels.

On the Internet you can find a solution based on a frame with handles from an old stroller. We think it's too flimsy for a normal scraper. Therefore, we suggest using a 20x40 mm profile pipe to make the frame. For our homemade product we will need a little, only 1.5 meters.

There will be no square frame in our version. It will be replaced by a central tubular strut. A handle is welded to its upper part - a piece of water pipe with a diameter of 20 mm.

Before assembly begins, you will need to purchase two 8-inch diameter cart wheels. The blade is made of sheet steel with a thickness of 0.8-1.0 mm. Having drilled holes in two steel flange plates to allow the shaft to pass through, they are welded to profile pipe, performing the function of a cutting.

After this, a short piece of 20x40 mm pipe is welded to the inclined post to attach the rotating plate with the blade. Three holes are drilled in the plate and in the pipe on which it will lie: one for the mounting bolt and two for installing the locking rod that secures the blade.

Any steel tube or fittings of suitable diameter can be used as an axle for the wheels. Having passed the axle through the holes in the flanges, it is necessary to weld retaining rings to it, protecting the wheels from displacement.

In winter, snow drifts interfere with normal movement. As a result of snowfalls, the surface of yards and lawns is completely covered.

This reason should make you take care of timely liquidation snow not only for the sake of order, but also for the safety of movement.

In order to prevent snowdrifts, roads need to be cleaned in a timely manner. Cleaning snow is a difficult and tedious task, but if you have convenient and effective equipment, this process can be significantly speeded up.

Currently domestic market offers a wide variety of winter equipment for snow removal. But we'll tell you how to do it different types scrapers (scrapers) for removing snow with your own hands.

Manualsnow scraper

The peculiarity of the manual scraper is its ease of use, as well as the low material waste when creating the scraper.

A hand scraper is indispensable for clearing areas of ice, but the runners will have to be pulled with difficulty along the sidewalk and ground. Therefore, it is better to make a manual scraper on wheels.

Let's look at the main stages of creating a manual scraper for removing snow on wheels:

1. To create a scraper blade, we need a pipe with a diameter of 27 cm, then we cut out a sector from it. As a result, we get the required blade.

2. Use an unwanted baby stroller to create a frame

3. We make stops using unnecessary water pipes. We create slots for the wheel axles in the pipes on one side, and weld them to the scraper blade on the other.

4. Take metal corners and create ears for fastening the racks.

5. To control the height of the handle, we make three holes in the upper part of the racks.

6. In order not to spoil the asphalt, you can install a protective conveyor belt to the lower parts of the blade. We paint the scraper.

Result: the scraper is very easy to use and cleans snow quickly and conveniently. Thanks to the conveyor belt, the asphalt and concrete covering don't get scratched.

Snow scraper brush

A snow scraper brush is one of the most universal remedies. Its configuration can be different, the main thing is that it fits comfortably in the hand.

What to make brush bristles from. Often, artificial bristles, similar to thick fishing line, are used for brushes.

You can, of course, make a brush from natural bristles, but then you will have to be generous financially. The stiffness of the brush will depend on the task at hand.

The scraper should not be heavy in weight, otherwise your hands will get tired quickly. Therefore, when creating a scraper, pay attention to its weight, since this is one of the main characteristics.

Plastic snow scrapers

The advantage of a plastic scraper over others is that snow practically does not stick to it and it is much lighter in weight, so working with it is much easier.

A plastic scraper, like other types of scrapers, can be created in any size. A small scraper can only be used for ice, but a wide one can clear most of the area.

A plastic scraper is suitable for clearing snow from not only roads, but also roofs.

Metal scraper for snow removal

Steps to create a metal snow scraper:

1. We take a metal sheet measuring 1500x800 mm, a 3-meter pipe for the handle, as well as 2 parts of a metal angle, 1 m long, for future runners.

2. Bend the tips of the runners and attach the handle. At a distance of a couple of millimeters in front of the posts, we install 2 pins, then attach the sheet to them.

3. Firmly install the upper part of the scraper using clamps.

Clamps will help control the height and are able to secure the side panel.

By the way, the scraper can be made foldable if there is a need to transport it in transport.

With the help of a special tool like a scraper, snow removal becomes better and faster.

A homemade snow scraper is not complicated in its design, and making it will not be difficult.

It would seem that what could be simpler than a snow shovel, however, this simple tool can be improved with your own hands and make a snow shovel convenient, functional, and most importantly, significantly reduce the load on your back when clearing snow.

Large and flat spaces - courtyards, entrances to gates and simply flat ones - are most conveniently cleared with a wide snow shovel. work surface, to capture as much snow as possible at once.

At the same time, the more snow on the shovel, the greater the load on the back and arms when throwing. Well, in this case, why not adapt... wheels to such a scraper!

A long, comfortable handle allows you to hold the body straight, and the wheels allow you to transport the collected snow to the right place. Perhaps such know-how can be bought somewhere, but assembling it with your own hands is also not a problem. It is enough just to weld the axles for the wheels to the handles, and set the position of the shovel blade at a convenient angle, in the manner of a bulldozer bucket.

If suddenly the paths are not smooth and winding, and snow needs to be transported over an impressive distance, the option of a snow shovel with one wheel will help out. The same wheel provides additional leverage when lifting snow mass.

Shovels with a handle on a handle

Don't want to bother with wheels? - A simple removable handle on the handle of the shovel will significantly reduce the load on your back and arms when throwing snow.

The removable handle can also be in this version - 2 rings with free movement are put on the handle, and a strip from the handle is inserted into their gaps at the desired height, this increases the “leverage” when throwing snow.

Modifying the shovel handle

Telescopic handle - allows you to adjust the length of the shovel to suit a person’s height.

A handle curved in this way also reduces the load on the back.

If you are left-handed or need to clear snow from hard to reach place, swivel mechanism on the handle will ensure its bending to the desired degree in both directions.

Car snow shovel

The rotating mechanism for attaching the blade to the handle will help you use the shovel both in a conventional version and as a cesspool device, and complete with a telescopic handle and convenient, compact transportation even in a small car trunk.

Removing snow from the roof

This device will make it much easier for you to clear snow from your roofs. You no longer need to stretch and balance to scoop up snow on the roof with a regular shovel.

This device, on the contrary, should be pushed away from you, pressing the lower strip with dense synthetic fabric against the roof slope. The snow itself will roll down the canvas.

These simple snow shovels are something you can build with your own hands and prevent various back injuries and strained arm muscles when clearing snow.
