English alphabet: letters and their pronunciation

The alphabet is where people start learning a foreign language. Immediately we have to face the first problem: letters in English are called differently than they are read in words. This is intimidating, confusing and sometimes misleading for beginners.

There are long historical explanations for this discrepancy. However, even understanding the reasons why this happened will not bring us any closer to the desired result - correct speech with perfect pronunciation. Therefore, we will simply remember that everything happens for a reason, but we will not dwell on this issue. Let's shift our focus to what you will have to deal with directly in the process of using the language. Below you will find the English alphabet with a transcription of each letter and a breakdown of how this pronunciation compares with the Russian language.

English alphabet

There are fewer letters in English than in Russian - 26.
Let's start with vowels. There are only six of them.
Aa [hey]
Ee [and]
II [ai]
Oo [oh]
Uu [yu]
Yy [yy]

Two surprises immediately await us:

There are more consonants - 20. Most of them are read with the sound that begins the name of the letter.

Why do you need to know the letters of the English alphabet?

Since they are not always read as they are called, the question arises: why do you even need to know the English alphabet with the pronunciation of the letters? As we remember, everything happens for a reason, and spelling will also be useful to us. For example, to write down the spelling of a difficult word or someone's name. The fact is that in Russian we pronounce words syllable by syllable, in which there is a risk of making a mistake, but in English they do this by letter. To dictate a word, you need to know the common official names for each letter.

Let's take the common English surname Smith - Smith in English. To dictate its correct spelling, we need the letters:
s [es] + m [em] + i [ai] + t [ti] + h [eych]

To ask to pronounce a word in this way, there is a special phrase: “Spell it, please” - spell it, please. It is useful to use to clarify the correct spelling when you doubt that you heard it accurately or have simply never seen a word before. If you hear this phrase yourself, then know that they really want to understand you correctly. And you can contribute to this only if you know how to correctly pronounce each letter of the English alphabet.

Another common case is when you are faced with the task of reading an abbreviation.
For example:

The U.S.A – the United States of America, United States of America. Our compatriots who have just begun to learn the language are given a pronunciation like [usa] instead of [yu es hey]. This is a big mistake.

Nowadays knowledge foreign languages is a guarantee of additional opportunities and success in life. Knowledge of English is in some way a necessity. It is used everywhere, which means it makes it possible to understand and be understood in any corner of the world. It is not surprising that a huge number of parents strive to teach their child English. And any training, as you know, begins with the basics. That is why today we will look at the English alphabet for children, analyze its features and methods of memorization.

First, however, let's address the issue of age. Often, mothers and fathers may have doubts about whether it is possible to start teaching English from the first years of a child’s life. The answer is simple: you need it! The fact is that during the first years of a person’s life, his brain goes through the first stage of development. This stage is characterized by the fact that the brain has many more neurons than it can use. Thus, the child’s brain is preparing to master the world. However, subsequently the excess neuron cells that were not used disappear. Therefore, if you take advantage of the moment and start learning as early as possible, the process on a purely physiological level will be easier and faster for children.

In addition, children, as a rule, do not have any stereotypes, and therefore they have an easier attitude towards languages and their learning. Plus, they have more time and fewer excuses like adults. It is worth noting that this does not mean that the child needs to be stuffed with a large amount of information at once, just as it does not mean that learning at another age is not even worth starting. From 3 years old or 5, 15, 30, 60 or 80 – you can start learning a language at absolutely any age. Therefore, if you were once planning to learn English, you can start learning the language with your child.

Explain to your child that English letters have their own sounds, which can sometimes change with different combinations of letters. Pay his attention to letters such as g and j, e and i, a and r, since the pronunciation of these letters is often confused with each other. Try to explain everything in simple words so that the child understands what he is being taught and does not close his eyes with the thought: “Why do I need these English letters?”

From the explanation of digraphs, which may subsequently lead to descriptions of the people indicated in the examples, probably to initial stage It's better to abstain. Just be aware of their existence and when learning a word in English that contains a digraph, tell your child how this or that combination of letters is read.

How to teach children the English alphabet

Of course, you won’t be able to get by with an ordinary table on top when working with children, and therefore we offer several options on how to help your child learn the English alphabet faster.

First and foremost, create a pleasant learning environment. If your child whines, denies and is distracted by other things, you will not get the same results. It is important not to force, but to be able to interest the child. Therefore, your English lessons should not be like training, they should be like a game. If the English alphabet is presented in a fun and interesting way, the child will remember the information much faster and will be interested in further learning the language. How can you teach a fun lesson in a playful way?

English alphabet in pictures

We all differ from each other and perceive information different ways. Your child may remember information better using visual memory. If so, then let him learn the English alphabet with pictures. These can be simply brightly drawn cards with letters, or cards that, in addition to letters, contain some images. It is not necessary to buy such cards with the English alphabet; you can make them yourself or even involve your child in this process.

English alphabet

Where do you usually start learning the Russian alphabet? That's right, from the alphabet. So why not apply the same method to English? There are now a lot of English primers for preschoolers on the book markets. All you have to do is check that each drawing matches the contents of the page and buy the book that you like best.

Songs

If your child does not like books or does not perceive visual information at all, you can try using auditory memory to learn English. And don’t say that you’ve never heard a song with the English alphabet. Perhaps it is even more popular than the anthem of Great Britain itself. Sing it yourself or play it on an electronic device. Besides the standard version, you can also look for other versions of songs with English letters. There are quite a lot of them on the Internet.

You can also play association games. For example, learning the English alphabet with animals. Tie words on the topic “animals” to the letters. These animals should begin with the letter that you want to explain to the child. Then play the sounds these animals make and let your child guess who you wished for them. Animals are usually remembered by a child much faster, so a similar exercise can be used from the moment the child begins to repeat after you and pronounce his first words.

Items

The English alphabet for little ones can be taught using various things. Show an object to your baby and name it in English. In the future, this will greatly simplify his understanding of the letters, since he will already have an idea of how they are pronounced.

At older ages, you can also use stickers. You need to write words on them that denote the objects that are in your house and, in fact, stick them in their places. Constantly noticing a word, the child will involuntarily associate it with the object to which the sticker is attached.

Educational cartoon

Another way of visual learning is watching cartoons. The alphabet in pictures for children may not seem very interesting, because there is no movement in it, there are no characters. But cartoons will probably attract the attention of any child. On this moment There are a huge number of educational cartoons in which the main theme is English for children. Typically, such cartoons present basic English language topics, including the alphabet, in an entertaining way. They come in both Russian and English. Decide for yourself which one to choose. But if your child does not yet speak Russian, then he can be shown cartoons exclusively in English, while for older children, Russian cartoons about English will be more understandable at first.

Subsequently, the child can also include some ordinary cartoons or the same films about superheroes. First, in this case, those cartoons and films, phrases from which your children know by heart, may be suitable. Accordingly, by giving them the English version, you can be sure that they follow the plot and understand everything that happens on the screen.

Computer game

Not all parents agree with this method, but it is still worth mentioning. If you want to enrich your child's learning and add more interactivity, you can use electronic gadgets. On the Internet you can find a huge number of games that help solve the question of how to learn English. This method can probably replace the first 3 at once, because these games can have cards with the English alphabet, “talking alphabet”, animals with their own sounds, and funny songs. There is also a training game in which the child needs to, for example, determine the order of letters or choose one letter out of two. Children will undoubtedly enjoy such exercises and will help them with their learning, because a child does not associate the word “game” with something tedious and dreary.

Checking what you have learned

Learned letters and words tend to be forgotten. To prevent this, periodically return to the topic of the alphabet. Listen to how your child speaks, pay attention to those moments when he chooses a letter at random rather than actually remembering its pronunciation or spelling. Don't swear if your child forgets something. When a person learns a large amount of information at once, this happens.

Nanny

There is, of course, another training option. Probably one of the most effective ways, which was also used by the families of the Pushkins, Lermontovs, Griboyedovs and other famous Russian people. If you do not want or do not have the opportunity to move to an English-speaking country, but want your child to speak with a native speaker on a daily basis, a nanny or teacher who will communicate more than teach your child at a desk are the most faithful assistants. When a person is not understood in one language, he has no choice but to learn the language of his interlocutor. In children, this process occurs spontaneously without any wasted effort. They will not be confused about which person to speak which language with, and will switch from one language to another instantly. A native speaker will save you from English classes with your child and will save you time, but, unfortunately, not money, so approach this option wisely.

It is also worth noting that you don’t need to think about how to quickly learn a language or teach it to someone. You will agree that you cannot learn even the same English alphabet in 30 seconds. Yes, sometimes even one letter may not be mastered in 30 seconds. Therefore, we teach or study English gradually, dwell on each letter, and learn its pronunciation.

We hope that the question of how to remember the English alphabet for children has become less pressing for you. Games, songs, cartoons, interactivity and simple patience - this is what English for children consists of. As you can see, there is nothing complicated about this, and therefore you should not wait for the first grade, start teaching your children right now.

Almost every language in the world has its own set of letters, which is called an alphabet. You are probably already familiar with the Russian alphabet and know how to read and write in Russian. And in this lesson you will become familiar with English letters, learn to read and write them correctly. In addition, you will learn some reading rules, consider English sounds and rules for reading stressed vowels in open and closed syllables.

There are 6 vowels in the English language (Fig. 2).

Rice. 2. English vowels ()

As you guessed, there are 20 consonant letters in the English language (Fig. 3.).

Rice. 3. English consonants ()

Please note that the last letter Z can be read differently: (UK) and (US).

Now you know the English alphabet. But in order to read English words correctly, knowing the letters alone is not enough. Modern English has 46 sounds, but only 26 letters. For example, in English words ah p i n (pin) and p i ne (pine) the letter i is read differently. And in the word sock (sock), the letter s is read as [s], but in combination with the letter h you get the sound [ʃ]: shock [ʃɔk] (shock).

Transcription will help us remember reading English words. Transcription is a recording of the sound of a letter or word in the form of special phonetic symbols. If you know the transcription, then you can correctly read an unfamiliar word in the dictionary.

The characters in the transcription are called transcription marks. Some transcription signs are written in the same way as English letters (Fig. 4).

Rice. 4. Transcription signs of some English consonants

Please note that when pronouncing the sounds [b] and [p], the lips close tightly and then suddenly open. When pronouncing the sounds [t] and [d], the tip of the tongue is pressed tightly against the alveoli (the tubercle behind the upper teeth). When pronouncing the sounds [f] and [v], the lower lip is slightly pressed against the upper teeth. When spoken English sound[m] lips close more tightly than when pronouncing the Russian sound [m].

Reinforce the English alphabet by studying the letters and words that begin with these letters (Fig. 5.).

Rice. 5. English alphabet with examples ()

In order to read English words correctly, we need to become familiar with the rules of reading. Like Russian, English words are divided into syllables. The rules for reading English vowels depend on which syllable they are in - stressed or unstressed, open or closed.

Today we will look at two stressed syllables - open and closed. An open syllable ends in a vowel (he - he, my - mine, sky - sky) or in a “silent” E, preceded by a consonant (plane - plane, five - five, plate - plate). Please note that the letter E at the end of the word is not readable (that’s why it is called “dumb”), but only indicates open type syllable. All vowels in an open syllable are read the same way as in the alphabet. For example:

bee - bee, plane - plane, five - five, pupil ["pjuːp(ə)l] - student, rose - rose, fly - fly. A closed syllable ends with one or more consonants (except r). For example:

pen - pen, lamp - lamp, pin - pin, doll - doll, puppy ["pʌpɪ] - puppy.

Thus, we got acquainted with the English alphabet, and also learned what transcription is, what syllables there are in the English language, and how vowels are read in an open and closed stressed syllable.

There are 6 vowel letters in the English alphabet, which when read in different words make 20 sounds. The way a stressed vowel is read depends on the syllable in which it is found. The reading rules distinguish four types of syllables depending on which letter comes after the stressed vowel.

The first type of reading is an open syllable. It ends with a vowel, for example cake.

The second type of reading is a closed syllable. It ends with a consonant (except r), for example cat (cat).

The third type of reading is associated with the letter R. In this type of reading, the stressed vowel is always followed by the letter R, which can be followed by a consonant or nothing else. In this case, the letter R is not read, it only lengthens the vowel, i.e. all vowels in the third type of reading sound long, for example car - machine. The fourth type of reading is a syllable that ends with a consonant R followed by a vowel, for example care.

Please note that all these rules apply only to vowels that are in a stressed syllable. Unstressed vowels will be read completely differently.

The vowels are A, E, I, O, U, Y.

There are several letters in the English language that we want to pay attention to Special attention, since they have certain features that need to be taken into account when learning the alphabet.

  • The letter Y in English can be read as a vowel or as a consonant. For example, in the word “yes” it is a consonant sound [j], and in the word “many” it is a vowel sound [i] (and).
  • Consonant letters in words, as a rule, convey only one sound. The letter X is an exception. It is transmitted by two sounds at once - [ks] (ks).
  • The letter Z in the alphabet is read differently in the British and American versions (as you probably already noticed in the table). The British version is (zed), the American version is (zi).
  • The pronunciation of the letter R is also different. The British version is (a), the American version is (ar).

To make sure that you pronounce English letters correctly, we recommend not only looking at them and reading them (using transcription or the Russian version), but also listening. To do this, we advise you to find and listen to ABC-song. This song is usually used when teaching children the alphabet, but it can also be useful for adults. ABC-song is very popular in teaching, it exists in various variations. If you sing it with the announcer several times, you can not only check the correct pronunciation of the letters, but also easily remember the alphabet along with the melody.

A few words about spelling

So, we have learned the English alphabet. We know how English letters are pronounced individually. But moving on to the reading rules, you will immediately see that many letters in different combinations read completely differently. A reasonable question arises - as the cat Matroskin would say - what is the benefit of memorizing the alphabet? In fact, there are practical benefits.

The point here is not the ability to recite the alphabet from beginning to end, but the ability to easily spell any English word. This skill is necessary when you need to write down English names under dictation. If you need English for work, this skill can be very useful, because english names, even ones that sound the same, can be written in several ways. For example, Ashley or Ashlee, Mila and Milla, not to mention last names. Therefore, for the British and Americans themselves, it is considered absolutely natural to ask to spell a name if you need to write it down (spell it) - hence the word spelling (spelling), which you can see in various tutorials.

Interesting facts about the English alphabet

The basis of the modern English alphabet is the Latin alphabet, but the sound of English letters is significantly different from the original Latin ones. In addition, the alphabet consists of 26 letters, and the language itself has 44 sounds (according to some studies, up to 49). It means that one letter can express several sounds, and vice versa - one sound can be expressed in writing in different ways. That is, we can talk about the pronunciation of a letter only in a specific word.

Nevertheless, each letter has its own name, which is what we hear in the alphabet.

Why do you still need to know the alphabet by heart?

The alphabet is a very important element of language learning and it must be memorized so that it “flies off the teeth.” Firstly, this will significantly facilitate the process of learning the language - reading, working with dictionaries, pronunciation. In the future, you will receive advantages in oral communication, because the British, like Americans, are very fond of abbreviations and most of them are pronounced by letter.
