Childhood and family
Alexey Chumakov was born in Samarkand, the pearl of Uzbekistan. The boy’s mother, Liliya Avanesovna, worked as a physiotherapist. Father, Georgy Georgievich Chumakov, worked as a graphic designer and headed the restoration of the Samarkand Cathedral of St. Alexy of Moscow. 
The artist’s brother’s name is Sergey, he is 12 years older than Alexey, now lives in Tyumen and works as a recording engineer. It was he who taught Lyosha, a quiet and calm boy by nature (as Sergei said in an interview, in childhood Alexey even had the nickname “homemade pie”), to give back to offenders
Alexey started singing at the age of five. In order to develop the boy's abilities, his parents sent him to a music school, to a class percussion instruments and percussion; he later taught himself the guitar.
Southern temperament, innate charm and leadership qualities helped Alexey at his first school concerts. He often acted as a soloist and presenter, and was an organizer of events. In addition, during his school years, Alexey became interested in basketball and kickboxing, participated in productions puppet theater.
The Chumakovs lived in Samarkand until 1994. For about five years, the family lived in a private house, about which Alexei had unpleasant memories. The singer is sure that a poltergeist lived there: family members felt the presence of foreign entities, heard strange sounds and rustles, objects fell to the floor by themselves. They later learned that the house was built on the territory where suicides were buried many years ago. Alexei described this experience in his fiction book “In Search of Ghosts.”
When Alexey turned 13, the family moved to Tyumen. Poltergeists have nothing to do with it - persecution on ethnic grounds has begun in Uzbekistan. At first they had to hang around in rented houses with terrible living conditions: the first house had no sewerage and central heating, the second had to be shared with seven more families, and there was not even running water there, not to mention amenities. After weighing the pros and cons, the Chumakovs decided to move into a hostel. Even if they had to huddle five of them (if you count the dog) in a 16-meter room, at least there was a toilet, a shower and a kitchen.
First steps to success
At the age of 11, Alexey Chumakov began writing songs and creating his own arrangements. With one of the author’s works (the song was called “ Yellow leaves") he won the city competition "Morning Star". 
Alexey's parents raised him to be an independent and hardworking person. While still a schoolboy, Chumakov himself earned pocket money: he sold vegetables and fruits at the market, helped a team of repairmen, and during the holidays he took on painting country fences.
At the age of 14, Chumakov performed for the first time in front of a general public - already in Tyumen, at City Day. He gave his first fee to his parents: 100 thousand rubles, which in modern money would be about one hundred rubles. Later, the young man met the director of the local puppet theater, who also managed the concert hall where Tyumen residents traditionally held banquets. He appreciated Alexey’s strong voice and offered to entertain the audience.
So Chumakov began performing at city discos. At first he called the organizers and offered services himself, later they began to invite him. He performed both covers of other people's songs and his own. At the same time, Alexey did not have a professional musical education; he didn’t even know how to read music, but acted on instinct. With difficulty, he saved money for an Ensoniq Ts 10 synthesizer, which at that time was considered very sophisticated, and began creating his own arrangements.
From the age of 14, the musically gifted boy sat on the jury of local talent competitions. He himself took part, for example, the jury of the “Step” competition once recognized Alexey as the best composer of the year.
After graduating from high school, Alexey entered the vocal department of the Higher College of Arts, and a year later transferred to the correspondence conducting and choral department at the Tashkent Higher College of Arts, which he successfully graduated in 1998.

These years were not easy: every free minute Alexey composed music and arrangements, while simultaneously performing in restaurants and clubs. As the singer himself admitted, it was an excellent school that anyone who decided to connect their life with the stage needs to go through, because success and recognition are loved not only by talent, but also by hard work.
By taking part in regional competition in Kemerovo “Voice of “Europe Plus””, Alexey Chumakov won in three categories at once as the best composer, vocalist and arranger.
The singer had a whole collection of awards, but he was not going to rest on his laurels, so he mastered the specialties of a make-up artist, art manager and music producer, found a sponsor and held his first tour in Yekaterinburg. It happened like this: in 1997, Chumakov wrote a song and gave it to a DJ he knew, who put the composition on air; it was heard by businessman Stanislav Nagaev, who lived in another city, and believed in Alexey’s musical talent.

The young man didn’t think for a second, but immediately went to get the ticket. The colossal experience accumulated over the years of his life helped him attract the attention of the jury - Anton Komolov and Larisa Dolina - and pass the competitive selection.

According to the results of the final, Alexey Goman took first place, Alexander Panayotov became the silver medalist, and Alexey Chumakov received an honorable third place, as well as the audience award from the Europe Plus radio - almost half of the listeners voted for the young singer.
All three finalists, who were joined a year later by the winner of the second season of “People’s Artist” Ruslan Alekhno, began to collaborate with Fridland’s production center FBI Music.
In 2006, Chumakov released his first studio album, “Dreams about something more,” which included 13 songs, including the hit “I’m Going Crazy About You.” Critics called the material “fairly high-quality American-style pop music,” especially highlighting the compositions “Stop” and “It Was and Will Be.” In April 2008, he went on his first foreign tour and gave several concerts in Germany.

Alekhno was the first to leave, followed by Chumakov. “Since April 16, 2009, I have been working independently,” he said in an interview. When asked about the reasons for this decision, he replied that from now on he wants to manage the creative process himself from start to finish. According to the singer, he and Fridland remained on friendly terms.
Solo career
The first album after the breakup with Eugene was released only in 2013, seven years after the first. But don’t think that Chumakov’s career went downhill after leaving FBI Music. It’s just that the singer was seriously interested in writing and acting projects, was a private guest on television, but he never forgot music: he slowly worked on a new album, and also wrote songs for other performers, for example, he composed the hit “Angels” for Boris Moiseev. 
In 2011, Alexey Chumakov sang the song “Hold On I’m Coming” in a duet with American singer Michael Bolton. The “white soul” star spoke about his Russian colleague like this: “In English language There is such a word - “badass”, which translates as “freaky”, “super”. This is what Alexey is.”

A television
After success at the People's Artist competition, Alexey quickly became one of the most recognizable TV presenters in Russia. In 2005, Chumakov signed a contract with the Rossiya TV channel and, together with Elena Vorobey, became the face of the show “The Secret of Success” (the Russian version of the British project “Factor X”), which discovered Zhenya Otradnaya. 
In 2007, Chumakov participated in the reality show “King of the Ring,” in which stars enter the ring and fight each other with boxing gloves. Alexey fought with actor Vladimir Epifantsev and injured his finger in the first fight. Later he had to fight with actors Evgeny Dyatlov and Alexander Nosik. Due to injury, the fights ended in technical knockout: terrible pain pierced his arm, and the fight was stopped.

2013 turned out to be a very busy year for Alexey, even if we leave out the release of a new album and his marriage to Yulia Kovalchuk. Participation in the new project of Channel One, the transformation show “One to One,” took up a lot of time. Chumakov shocked viewers with his resemblance to Stevie Wonder, Ilya Lagutenko, Boris Moiseev and even Montserrat Caballe, and in the end, according to the results of the audience vote, he became the winner of the first season, significantly ahead of his main rivals: Timur Rodriguez and Yulia Savicheva.

Alexey Chumakov wrote his first script in 2004, and later, with the help of his friend video director Kirill Kotelnikov, he made the film “Alien Sunset” (ultimately “Dirt”) based on it. In 2015, Alexei Chumakov’s first novel, the mystical short story “In Search of Ghosts,” came out on the Russian book market. As the author of the work said, he was inspired to start his writing career by Stephen King.

The name of Alexei Chumakov has long been inextricably linked with the name of singer Yulia Kovalchuk. The couple became one of the most recognizable in the domestic media space and even received the title of “Couples 2014” according to Glamor magazine, but their relationship began not at all like in a fairy tale. 
As Alexey said more than once, he and Yulia were colleagues on stage and knew each other for a long time, from the times when Kovalchuk performed with “Brilliant”, and he was just beginning the path to fame. They often saw each other behind the scenes, on set, but there was no talk of “love at first sight.”
The future spouses began to communicate closely after Yulia’s participation in the “Dancing on Ice” project. First, Alexey invited the girl to his solo concert, then she invited him to a party with friends. The young people found out that they had a lot in common - both started their careers from the very bottom and achieved everything solely on their own.
In 2009, Chumakov and Kovalchuk declared themselves a couple. 5 years passed before Alexey proposed to his beloved, because a stamp in the passport is not at all necessary for a happy relationship.
In November 2013, Yulia Kovalchuk showed off a diamond engagement ring that appeared on her ring finger. Chumakov and Kovalchuk have always been a surprisingly harmonious couple and often delighted the public with their joint work. For example, in 2014, the lovers presented the joint composition “To Notes,” the video for which was shot by Yulia and Alexey, without the help of professional cameramen. Unfortunately, Liliya Avanesovna Chumakova passed away in 2011 due to cirrhosis of the liver. In the program “Secret for a Million,” Alexey, without holding back his tears, said that doctors brought hepatitis to his mother. She had no pain for many years, and when the pain started, it was too late - cirrhosis was diagnosed. Alexey was just beginning his path to fame, but did everything to move his parents to Moscow. She was given six months, but she lived for another six years. Alexey says that during these six years he could not sleep peacefully.

In 2003, the lead singer of “Brilliant” Yulia Kovalchuk watched with interest the final of the “People’s Artist” competition. One of its participants, Alexey Chumakov, had a good chance of winning and was very attractive to her. When Alexey took an honorable third place, Yulia was sincerely happy for him.

Together
Julia and Alexey still claim that their love story can hardly be called romantic. For some time, Kovalchuk considered Chumakov a man with a non-traditional sexual orientation. Of course, this was not true, but the artist never stooped to any explanations.
“He and I were in the same “weight class” in show business: both were newcomers, from not very wealthy families, and started practically from scratch in their solo work,” Yulia explained the sympathy that arose.
Five years have passed since their first acquaintance, when they both met on the “Dancing on Ice” project. Alexey invited his colleague to his solo concert, after which he received a return invitation. A huge bouquet of flowers, dinner at a restaurant - and the long-dormant “chemistry” between them finally flared up.
They failed to keep their romance a secret: the couple was often spotted together, and soon Kovalchuk and Chumakov made an official statement - yes, they are together, but that’s all that outsiders should know. An introvert by nature, Alexey couldn’t stand being pressured. But the longer they lived with Yulia in a civil marriage, the more gossip and questions arose around his next step - when is the wedding?

“Julia is too smart. She never asked questions about when... Although sometimes I could see from her mood that she was waiting for such a conversation,” admitted Alexey.
“In general, it’s humiliating for a woman to say: “Listen, propose to me.” Nobody canceled a man’s desire to be a winner. Even after six years, as I did, a man must mature to make this decision himself.”
And Chumakov has matured. Having become the owners of an apartment in Spain, they suddenly realized how they saw their ideal wedding - without noise and fuss, surrounded by their closest people and in the complete absence of reporters. In Russia this would have been impossible, so in Moscow Yulia and Alexey only signed: together, without witnesses.
The next day, their modest celebration took place in Spain: the bride, groom and only twelve guests.
Family
Official marriage became a much easier experience for both than civil marriage. Both leaders by character, Alexey and Yulia finally got used to each other so much that they learned to extinguish any conflicts.
“It took me a long time to understand that a woman should take a step back. Now I always estimate the amount of moral burden that will fall on both me and Lesha in the event of a quarrel. And I don’t immediately want to stir up a conflict,” says Kovalchuk.
If before the wedding the main pressure of journalists fell on Alexey, now it was she who became the object of suspicion: fans were tirelessly watching to see if Yulia had a baby bump, and if so, when exactly would she become a mother?! But they still had no intention of sharing their secrets with the public.
Julia's pregnancy became known shortly before giving birth. The singer chose to bear her daughter Amelia in the same place where her family with Alexei was born - in Spain. Very soon the girl will turn one year old, but her parents have already managed to return to the usual life of pop stars: with concerts, rehearsals and recording new songs. This is what they share with fans with pleasure, and everything else is not for prying eyes.

Her parents noticed her suddenly emerging vocal talent when Alyosha was 5 years old. They decided that the boy’s abilities could not be ruined. Therefore, they took him to one of the Samarkand music schools- to the percussion class. Later Chumakov taught himself to play the guitar.
At school, thanks to his talents, Alexey became a star. He sang at all events and school discos, winning the hearts of girls. In addition, the teenager demonstrated other abilities: he organized many events and led them himself.
At the same time, the guy did not forget about his physical fitness: he attended kickboxing and basketball sections. The young man’s height also allowed him to achieve success in the sports field. Over time, Alexey stretched up to 192 cm, and his weight subsequently reached 92-93 kg.
Alexey Chumakov began making his first arrangements for songs that he composed and sang himself at the age of 11. The teenager chose one of his original works to perform at the Samarkand competition for children and youth “Morning Star”. And he won.
From a young age the boy demonstrated male character. He started earning his first money early. To achieve this, he was not shy about any kind of work: he sold vegetables and fruits at the market, during the holidays he worked on construction sites or painted fences at dachas as an apprentice or laborer.
In the mid-1990s, difficult and troubling times came in my native Uzbekistan. The Chumakov family decided to leave the country in search of a safer and calmer place. Parents and children moved to Tyumen. There Alexey became a student in the vocal department of the Higher College of Arts. But a year later, the guy decided to transfer to the conducting and choral department of the Tashkent Higher College of Arts, which he successfully graduated from in absentia in 1998.
Music
These years were difficult, but eventful for young Chumakov. He paved the way in creativity - he composed music for songs, wrote arrangements and earned money for a living. To develop, he sang in restaurants and bars. Alexey Chumakov did not consider such work shameful: on the contrary, it was an excellent school, which, as he claims, every singer should go through.
The beginning of Alexey Chumakov’s creative biography can be considered his performance at the regional competition “Voice of Europe Plus”, which was held in Kemerovo. The first victory turned out to be resounding and unconditional. Alexey managed to win in three categories at once: as the best vocalist, composer and arranger.
After this, the performer’s career took off rapidly. For several years in a row he was a participant and winner of the Tyumen talent competition “Step”. Along these “steps” Alexey Chumakov climbed the mountain, and his collection of awards quickly filled up. But the young artist had the understanding that it was not time to rest on his laurels and savor the victory. He felt that to real glory there were many more steps to go through and a lot to learn.
