How to cut a plastic plinth: how to cut it and how to cut it correctly How to cut a ceiling plinth in the corners without a miter box the first time How to cut a board 45 degrees

The quality of the ceiling finish greatly affects appearance premises. Therefore, they try to make everything perfect, or very close to it. The finishing touch in the design is ceiling plinth. They give the finish a finished and holistic look. The planks themselves flat surfaces easy to assemble: with special glue white color, but there are problems with the design of the corners. Without knowing how to make the corner of the ceiling plinth correctly, a lot of material deteriorates. We will tell you about how and with what to cut it in the corners.

What is it made of and what is it called

The very first skirting boards on the ceiling were made of gypsum. They were cast in special molds, then they were installed on the ceiling on the mortar. Such curly ornaments were called fillets. Today you can see them infrequently: they are expensive, and outwardly they are almost no different from cheaper options. And the name is almost lost.

The most popular today are ceiling plinths made of polyurethane or polystyrene. They are inexpensive, look great, are easy to install, and have a wide range of profiles and patterns. The width can be from 5 mm to 250 mm. They are used in almost any room, decorated in any style. Exception - Most often used here wooden crafts— style dictates its conditions.

There is also a similar finish made of plastic. It is mainly installed in bathrooms. But even in damp rooms, you can safely mount polyurethane strips - they are not afraid of dampness.

Cut the ceiling plinth in the corners of any material using one of the methods described below. Exception only plastic skirting boards: you can make such a corner only using ready-made corners.

What and how to cut

Working with skirting boards different material implies the use different instruments for cutting. When working with a ceiling plinth made of wood, it is more convenient to work with a wood saw. All the rest, including plastic, foam and other polymers, are better cut with a metal blade. It turns out a more even cut, less burr. Saws are usually used when working with a miter box.

When working with foam skirting boards without special tools, they are cut with a good clerical knife. Its blade is quite thin and even, the cut is smooth, not jammed. If you work with polyurethane or polystyrene with a saw, do not press hard: you can wrinkle.

In general, in order to get used to the tool and material a little, take some piece and practice on it: cut, saw, cut. So at work there will be less problems.

How to get the right angle

Most of the problems when working with ceiling plinths arise when making corners. Since the surface of the products is complex, simply cutting at the right angle will not work: you also need to cut them so that they fit together and preferably without large gaps. In fact, there are several ways to make the corner of the ceiling plinth perfect (or almost).

Using a chair

If the corners and walls in the room are even, you can use a special carpentry tool- miter box. This is an inverted U-shaped chute with lines for 90° and 45° cuts. The part in which you want to make a wash is laid inside, a saw is inserted into the guides. The part is held in place, cut at the required angle.

In the case of skirting boards, everything is not so simple: they must simultaneously adhere to two surfaces, therefore they must be pressed against one or another wall of the miter box. When working with ceiling, they are pressed against the side closest to you.

The sequence of actions when finishing the outer corner you need to make washed down at an angle of 45 degrees. Put the chair in front of you. Try on how the plinth will be located, determining which part of it will be attached to the ceiling. In order not to get confused and cut the ceiling plinth correctly, lay the plank that will be located on the right on the right, the one on the left - on the left.

With the part that is on the ceiling, press it to the bottom of the miter box. The other side is closer to you and raised. You lean it on the wall of the fixture so that it does not stagger when cutting. That is, the front part of the plinth is turned away from you. Make the cut direction as shown in the photo below. Putting the two cut parts together, you get a protruding - outer or outer corner.

How to make an outer corner of a ceiling plinth using a chair

The sawn off parts are first applied to the place “dry”, without applying glue. If the geometry of the corner turned out to be not so ideal, you can tweak it a little with a knife. Small errors are easier to cover with a special putty.

With the inner corner of the ceiling plinth, the situation is very similar. First, try on which side will be on the ceiling, press this part to the bottom of the miter box, rest the second part on the wall closest to you and make cuts as shown in the photo below.

And again, first try on without applying glue, if necessary, slightly adjust. Then apply thin strip adhesive on both surfaces that will be glued to the wall or ceiling.

Your version of how to properly use the miter box is shown in the video.

How to make a corner of a ceiling plinth without a miter box

Few people in apartments or houses have exactly 90 ° angles. Small deviations are easily corrected after fitting. But not always. Then you have to mark everything "in place" - under the ceiling.

You will need a finely defined pencil (hard - it is not so visible on the ceiling, but leaves fairly clear marks close up), a small piece of plinth, a ruler and a good stationery knife if you work with polyurethane (polystyrene) baguettes or a metal saw to work with the rest of the materials.

Apply the plinth to the corner, draw along the outer edge with a pencil. Apply to the other side of the corner, also note. You have a cross on the ceiling, the center of which marks the place where the strips of the ceiling plinth should meet (see photo). Having installed a piece of plinth in the corner, which will be glued there and resting it with its end against the wall, transfer the mark to it.

How to make corners on ceiling plinths without using special tools

Now take a ruler and connect the edge of the plinth with the marked mark. If you just put the plinth on the table and cut along the line, the two parts in the corner will still not add up: it will interfere inner part. It can be trimmed later, trying on the ceiling. The second way is to set the piece to be cut on the table with the piece that will be on the ceiling. And cut along the line, but holding the knife at an angle of about 45 °. You will still need to correct, but much less (and less likely to make a mistake).

Repeat the same operation with the second bar. Attach to desired wall, rest the end against the adjoining wall, mark the place where the cross is drawn, draw a line and then cut it off. Correction is carried out "dry" without applying glue.

You repeat exactly the same actions for the outer (protruding) corner. Now you know another way to make a corner of a ceiling plinth, and without a string or other special devices.

With decorative corners

There is another, the easiest way. For skirting boards made of polyurethane or polystyrene, use ready-made, factory-made decorative corners. They are installed in a corner, the strips are glued closely to them. Cutting them if necessary is very simple: a few millimeters with an ordinary clerical knife.

How to join in corners

If the installation of the first corner is completed, we can assume that you have already learned to do almost everything. “Almost” because you still need to learn how to connect the corners and cut the planks to length. When some part is already glued and there is a small distance to the corner, how can you not make a mistake with the length? The answer is simple: leave a margin.

At first, you can cut off a piece 10-15 cm longer: there will be an opportunity to redo it several times if something does not work out right away. Then you make a corner in the way described above, try it on dry, adjust everything so that the result suits you. Only after that you can put the already cut bar into the corner and mark the place to which it can be shortened. You need to cut exactly at 90 °. It is not necessary to use a stool. Just try to put the knife (hacksaw) perpendicular to the surface.

To mount the flow plinth, it is necessary to properly dock it in the outer and inner corners, just like with neighboring elements and the wall. In this article we will talk about how to properly cut down the ceiling plinth.

Methods for cutting corners on a ceiling plinth

There are three main methods for cutting corners on skirting boards:

  • with the help of a chair;
  • using the drawing on the table;
  • using the markings on the ceiling.

How to cut a ceiling plinth with a miter box?

What is a chair? This is a special tool that looks like a slotted tray. Grooves are designed for precise cutting of corners on bars, slats and other elements. As standard, the miter box has stencils of such angles as 45, 60, 67.5, 90 degrees.

Formation of the inner and outer corner

How to saw off the ceiling plinth for the outer corner? In order to cut it off, it is necessary to put the plinth into the miter box from the side from which the element will be fixed to the ceiling. Thus, the ceiling molding is applied to the near wall of the miter box. After that, the plinth itself is cut along the gutter, which has a slope of 45 degrees.

The fillet is applied with the lower part to the top of the miter box. Thus, we will see the element exactly in the perspective in which it is attached to the ceiling. Do not forget that the bottom point of the cut will border on the corner of the wall, that is, it will be the extreme point of the profile.

In order to cut the left plinth of the outer corner, the hacksaw is placed from left to right, and for the plinth on the right, on the contrary, from right to left.

And how to proceed to cut off the inner corner of the left plinth? In this case, the bottom edge of the element will protrude, so the left fillet is cut from right to left, and the right fillet is cut from left to right (read: ""). Thanks to this, we get the inner corner.

Trimming corners using a drawing on the table

But how to cut down a ceiling plinth if you do not have a miter box in your arsenal? You can do it in a different way. To do this, we need a drawing on the table that will imitate a stencil with corners.

First, two lines are drawn in parallel on the surface, the distance between which is equal to the inside of the miter box gutter, namely 8.5 cm. Now, using these lines, a square is made in which two diagonals are drawn. Thus, we got the leading angles of 45 degrees.

Cutting off the inside corner of the left skirting board

Subsequent operations do not differ from how we made the inner corner with the help of a miter box. Only in this case, we press the plinth not to the side (which simply does not exist), but to the drawn line. To make it easier for you to level the skirting board, attach a box to the line. Thus, you will get a surface on which you can rest the baseboard. Do not forget that the plinth should not lie directly on the line. That is why the box is used.

When cutting, the bottom of the skirting board will point away from you. For the outer corner, the upper corner of the profile will be protruding, and for the inner corner, the lower corner.

Ceiling marking for installation of plinth

This method is used if the corners of your room are not straight, that is, not 90 degrees. In this case, cutting according to the miter box or stencil on the table will not give the desired results.

First you need to make a simple drawing. The plinth is applied to the corner and a line is drawn along its level on the ceiling. A similar operation is done on an adjacent wall. Now, if you attach the baseboard to the wall, then one of the lines will cross it (see photo). This point and the bottom corner of the skirting board are on the cut line. Thus, the required cutting angle is obtained.

To form the outer corners, a similar drawing is made. Only in this case, the upper part of the plinth will protrude.

For cutting skirting boards hard materials(wood, gypsum, polyurethane) a hacksaw is used. Small teeth allow you to make a smooth cut. But this does not mean that a wood saw with fine teeth will achieve the same results.

A sharp construction knife is used to cut the corners of the foam plinth. Hacksaw cut given material it is forbidden.

Sometimes you need to cut a particular part or product at a certain angle. As a rule, you need to cut baguettes, fillets, platbands, skirting boards and other similar interior elements at an angle of 45 degrees. Everyone can cope with this task. The main thing is not to rush, not to be nervous and everything will work out.

Buy ready-made corner elements

Of course, the easiest way is not to suffer with trimming a particular part, but to buy a ready-made one that does not need processing and trimming. Such parts and elements are sold today everywhere in large supermarkets or smaller stores.

For example, with regard to baguettes or fillets, they sell special corner elements that fit perfectly into the corner and do not need to be cut. They just need to be glued into place and pressed well.

The method of connecting platbands without trimming

Platbands today are often not cut at an angle, in order to then join each other, but make a joint at right angles. This method of connecting the platbands does not require any special trimming, which is very convenient. In addition, this method looks more modern and attractive.

Cutting at an angle with a miter box

If, nevertheless, it is necessary to cut this or that part at an angle, then it is worth stocking up with a miter box - the simplest device that looks like a small box. The miter box has slots that are designed for a saw or a long sharp knife. Of course, these slots are made in such a way that they form a smooth and precise angle of 45 degrees.

However, the miter box can have many slots at once, at different angles. This is convenient, because with the help of one device, you can cut any part at various angles.

There are adjustable chairs for sale. The slots in such a miter box can be adjusted, which allows the master to set exactly the angle that is required in this moment. In particular, it is quite simple to translate the slots of such a miter box into a position of 45 degrees.

Now the workpiece can be trimmed in an elementary way. A baguette, platband or plinth is placed in the miter box, after which a saw is inserted into the slots and the excess is simply cut off. The angle is perfect, exactly 45 degrees.

What to do if there is no miter box? Very simple. It is necessary to make a template according to which it will not be difficult to transfer the necessary markup to the blanks. As a template, you can choose thick cardboard or something else that would be appropriate in this case.

Trimming parts at an angle with a protractor

You can cut the part at an angle using a protractor. This is a measuring tool that is easy to use, and which is designed specifically to measure angles or make the necessary markings on certain parts. The protractor is applied to the part, mark the angle and make markings with a pencil. According to this markup, cutting the workpiece at the desired angle is not difficult.

Using Templates

If there is no protractor, miter box or ready-made corner elements available, you will have to look for a suitable template. Of course the template must have desired angle. It is applied to the workpiece and the workpiece is marked with a pencil. This is one of the most simple ways achieve the desired result.

Cut in place

Not always the walls, floor and ceiling will be perfectly even in practice. Most often they have irregularities. For this reason, there is no need to cut the workpieces at clear and precise angles, because they still will not fit perfectly.

Instead, it is sometimes convenient to cut the same ceiling plinth in place. That is, first they glue one plank of the plinth, cut it in the corner, and cut the second plank under it.

Of course, it is hardly possible to cut off the workpiece perfectly. However, if a small gap appears in the corner, it can always be covered with putty or gypsum plaster. Nothing special.

Video: How to cut the corner of a plinth or baguette without a miter box

During repair or construction, it is not uncommon for a situation where it is necessary to make a junction of two parts so that it fits perfectly into corner rooms. If it is necessary to cut corner at 45º, proceed in one of the following ways.

You will need

  • - ruler;
  • - pencil, pen, marker;
  • - paper;
  • - protractor;
  • - miter box;
  • - knife, scissors, jigsaw and other cutting tools.

Instruction

If the surface of the material is large enough to make marks, draw one of the cut lines with a ruler. Then draw a perpendicular to this line using corner a box or any object with even edges, such as a sheet of paper or a book.

With a ruler, mark equal segments on each side of the corner, for example, 10 cm each. Measure the distance between the points obtained and divide it in half. Connect this point to the top right angle. You received corner at 45º, now cut the material along the drawn lines with scissors, a knife, a jigsaw or other tools.

Mark one of the cut lines, take a protractor and attach to the line. Find the 45º mark on the scale and connect this point to the center of the protractor. Cut the material along the marked lines with available tools.

Cut paper, film, foil or other easily bendable material as follows: find or draw a straight corner(for a sheet of paper, this is any of its corners). Bend the sheet so that the adjacent sides match. Cut the sheet along the fold line.

If you need to cut corner at 45 degrees several times, for example, when fitting a skirting board, make a template. To do this, take a thick cardboard, draw a square on it and cut it diagonally.

In order to cut materials at an angle of 45º in large volumes, buy a miter box, this tool can be easily found in any hardware store. Insert the skirting board or rail inside as it will be located in the space, and cut it with a knife, jigsaw or other tool.

How to cut a ceiling plinth so that the corners are perfect

In the corners of the room, when installing a ceiling plinth, for example, from foam plastic, small inconsistencies can often occur that spoil the overall appearance of the room. This, of course, can and should be avoided. So, how to cut the plinth with your own hands exactly? The first assistant in this matter will be such a tool as a miter box. But buying one for a one-time repair is not always advisable. Although, if you decide to help all relatives and neighbors with repairs, and in the future also earn money on this, then you need this device.

An example of ideal angles

If you are still limited to one installation of the plinth at home, then it is not necessary to use such a carpentry tool. You can do without it. In order to consider all the ways to properly cut a ceiling plinth, we will find out what it consists of.

To understand how to properly cut a plinth, you should understand its composition. This will help you choose the right tool and cutting technology.

  • Styrofoam. The price and strength of this material is the lowest. But since we are creating a decorative decoration of the ceiling, strength is not particularly required.
  • The ceiling plinth made of expanded polystyrene is denser. than regular foam. For cutting such material, the most common knife is used.

Tip: sharpen your knife well before use. This will eliminate the presence of torn edges at the incision sites.

How to cut a skirting board straight

  • Tree. Here you have to put more effort into processing. For wood, use only a hacksaw.

Tip: the smaller and more frequent the saw tooth, the smoother the edges will be. You can even use a sheet for metal.

  • Plastic. How to cut a plastic plinth? The same method as with a tree is suitable here - a saw, a hacksaw. Alternatively, you can also use a grinder.

Using a regular hacksaw blade

Cutting methods

The product is installed around the perimeter of a rectangular room. Trimmed to finish right angles. Therefore, we will consider how to cut the baseboard 45 degrees.

Cutting with a miter box

What is a stool? This is a special tray made of wood, aluminum or plastic with grooves provided to guide the saw at the desired angle.

Here is a brief instruction on how to use such a carpentry tool:

  • Preparation. We take the product and put it in the tray. Align to the position in which it will be installed on the ceiling.
  • Cutting. With the other hand, insert the cutting tool into the groove. It can be a knife or a hacksaw. And boldly cut. The device will not let you miss the intended place.

You should know: a metal blade is also suitable for cutting foam.

  • Treatment. A wooden skirting board may need to be further filed to even out the cut edges. Plastic or foam plastic can be touched up with a knife, the main thing is that it is sharp enough.

Tip: when cutting, do not put pressure on the product. Styrofoam can crumble, and wood can even split.

That's so easy and simple to use miter box

Cutting without a miter box

If you do not have such a device, and you are not going to purchase it for one-time use, then you can use the following methods to cut the baseboard at 45 degrees.

  1. The first way is to make this simple carpentry tool yourself. To do this, knock down the most common tray made of wood. Then we measure the lines of the slots using a protractor or a school square. We cut the grooves and we have a primitive fixture ready.
  1. The second way. how to cut a skirting board at an angle is even simpler. It is especially painless to use it in cases where the corners of the room are not even.

We don't need a tray. Enough of two boards knocked down at 90 degrees and a cardboard stencil with a line drawn for orientation.

  1. The third way. In this case, we do not knock anything down at all, but simply use a table attached to the wall or any other similar structure.

We mark future joints directly on the product itself, on the wall and on the ceiling. We apply the plinth as we are going to mount it, and cut it according to the marks.

The simplest way without the use of special tools

Keep in mind that while cutting, hold the tool strictly vertically to obtain a right angle.

Features of cutting various angles

We have analyzed the general technology of how to cut ceiling skirting boards.

How to cut a part or product at an angle of 45 degrees

But it also has some nuances in cutting different angles of this product.

Internal floor

View of the inner corner

First, let's set the left and right plinths at a right angle. We insert the left product into the miter box, applying to the outside, cut off the left inner corner. Then we do a similar operation with the right. Ready.

External floor

View of the external floor corner

In this case, using the miter box, we are not in the mode of the inner, but the outer edges. The rest of the operation is similar.

External ceiling

View of the outer ceiling corner

We already cut the ceiling corners on the inside of the fixture.

Having inserted the left plinth into the miter box, we cut off the left outer corner. We substitute the right - the mode is the right outer edge.

Internal ceiling

View of the inner ceiling corner

By analogy with the outer corner, we cut off the inner one. We only cut the inner left and right edges, respectively.

It is important to remember: the product is always attached to the ceiling upside down. Therefore, insert it upside down into the miter box. This will help you cut the skirting correctly.

  • Install the skirting board only when you have already prepared the next one. Do it better on the floor, not under the ceiling.
  • Patience, patience and more patience. Joints sometimes have to be corrected more than once. Do not be nervous, be careful, and everything will work out.
  • With the use of foam and plastic, you can afford to leave small gaps at the joints of the corners. The putty hides them well. Be careful with the tree.

Results

Effort pays off

If you still have some questions, then the visual in this article will help to resolve them.

By carefully following the recommendations and taking into account the characteristics of the material you are working with, you can give your ceiling beauty and originality. Choose the way you like and go! You will succeed (read also about the benefits of PVC plinth).

Such an angle in geometric problems occurs quite often, so it is important to understand what it is and how to build it.
The easiest way is to build an angle of 45 degrees without special tools (like a protractor) on a sheet of notebook in a box.

We cut the corners of the ceiling plinth: tools and cutting methods

To do this, you need to understand that the angle of 45 degrees is equal to half the right angle, that is, the angle of 90 degrees:
45 = 90 / 2.
On a notebook sheet in a box, using a ruler, you can easily build an angle of 90 degrees (that is, a straight line):

To do this, you need to select one point at the intersection of the cells and draw a vertical and horizontal line from it.
To build half of the angle of 90 degrees, you need to draw a straight line from an arbitrary point, and the second straight line needs to be drawn along the diagonals of the cells. It is convenient to mark several such points on the diagonals of the cells (as in the figure), and then connect them with a straight line:

After connecting these points, we get half an angle of 90 degrees, that is, an angle of 45 degrees.

It's also useful to remember that a 45 degree angle is an acute angle because it's less than 90 degrees.
To construct an angle of 45 degrees, it is not necessary to put down several points on the diagonals of the cells. To do this, it is enough to mark one such point and connect this point with a straight line to the point of the beginning of the first side of the angle.
