The size of the pool table and room for playing billiards. Room dimensions for Russian billiards

Billiard equipment, like any other product, is subject to the price-quality relationship. Before as buy a billiard table It is very important not only to decide on the size of the room where it will stand, but also to choose the right one. Of course, it is up to you to decide whether to buy an economy class or luxury class billiard table; it depends only on the purpose of purchasing the table and, of course, on the purchase budget. Right choice primarily depends on the materials used and design features billiard table. The service life of the table and its gaming characteristics depend on them.

What should you pay attention to when choosing a billiard table?

1. Room dimensions

Regardless of what amount you decide to spend on purchasing a billiard table, this parameter, namely the minimum size of free space for installation, will always be decisive.

Comments on the table:
If it is not possible to allocate a free space of 4x5 m (without columns, fireplaces and large furniture) for installing a billiard table, then it is better to abandon the idea of having a billiard table altogether.
If the free space is more than 5x7 m, then you can install a billiard table of any size.
Preference should be given to the table of the maximum size available for installation, in accordance with the direction of the billiards that you prefer.
It is not recommended to place alternative table sizes, as this leads to loss of interest. Example: I want a pyramid pool table, but the room only allows for an 8-foot table. It is better to set a full 9 feet (tournament size) and master one more direction of billiards, than to lose interest in Russian billiards in general, playing on such a small table...

2. Frame, legs and sides

Before you buy a billiard table, you should ask the sellers what kind of wood it is made of. The ideal material for the manufacture of load-bearing parts of the structure - frame, sides and support legs is considered to be solid wood. hard rocks wood - oak, walnut, mahogany, ash. It is these rocks that allow the table to preserve the geometry of parts as much as possible during fluctuations in temperature and humidity. Tables made of soft wood - alder, linden, pine, which can cost an order of magnitude cheaper, but are not durable.

The thickness and height of the frame must correspond to the specified; with smaller sizes, the frame structure will have less rigidity, and the table may “walk.” For a table measuring 9-11 feet, the frame thickness should be at least 40 mm. The ideal frame height for a 12ft table is 200mm.

The main requirements for the wooden part of a billiard table are reliability and massiveness, which allows it to withstand the load of considerable weight of the slabs and the rigidity of the structure - the table should not wobble and change its geometric parameters.

3. Table base

The slab usually consists of three or five parts (depending on the size of the playing field), which are connected during assembly using threaded ties. The seam between the slabs is carefully puttied, and then the surface is leveled so that the joints between the slabs should be completely invisible. (Try to lightly run your palm over the table and check if the joints are noticeable).

Before buying a billiard table, find out what material the plate underlying its playing surface is made of:
- Ardesia slate - natural stone. It has the necessary strength and elasticity due to its slate structure. A ball weighing 290 g falling from a height of 1.5 m does not leave cracks or dents on the slab. The plates are joined together with an accuracy of 0.125 mm and polished. It has optimal parameters solidity, hardness and fragility among similar materials. This slate is easier to process than granite and marble, which allows you to get enough perfect surface for proper rolling of balls and to easily “repair” damage to the slab during operation.
- Synthegran(synthetic granite) - a composite material based on marble chips interconnected epoxy resins. Least quality material among the stone foundations of the playing field, since it tends to crumble and therefore cannot have a perfectly even surface.
- Marble It is more difficult to obtain a uniform marble slab of sufficient size and thickness. The surface of marble is more sensitive to damage and is more difficult to polish. Any compromises in thickness and uniformity lead to significant complications in obtaining a “perfectly flat” surface, etc. Again, the price of an equivalent, if one could be obtained, was disproportionately higher! Currently, marble-based slabs are no longer manufactured.
- laminated chipboard(laminated chipboard). The advantages of laminated chipboard boards include the lowest price and minimum weight. However, lovers of savings who bought a table made of laminated chipboard will have to get used to increased background noise (you can hear the balls rolling). Laminated chipboard quickly wears out and becomes deformed with even the slightest bounce of the balls (billiard balls very often jump on chipboard due to its lower density compared to slate), therefore, for the Russian pyramid, the use of chipboard is only possible on small tables with small (light) balls. Also, such a basis is unstable to high humidity and temperature changes, so the room with the table must be constantly heated and dry.
- Chipboard(chipboard), MDF(fibre board). The use of polymer concrete, MDF and chipboard is justified only in order to significantly reduce the cost of the table and at the same time deteriorate its playing characteristics. Considering the low cost of laminated chipboard, these materials do not justify themselves.

From the above characteristics of the plate materials it follows that the base of a good billiard table that meets all sports standards should only be Ardesia!

4. Rubber

Billiard rubber is rubber of a certain profile. It can be snooker - having the shape of the letter "G", pool - having a triangle in cross-section, carom - having the shape of an irregular trapezoid, and rubber for Russian tables, which is produced like a carom.

The quality of the side rubber depends on the geometric shape, chemical composition, natural rubber content ratio and vulcanization method. High-quality rubber has a stable, homogeneous composition and a geometric shape that uniformly changes the angle of reflection in proportion to the force of the ball hitting the side.

The rubber profile on the table must match the diameter of the balls used for playing pyramid, pool or snooker! Neglect of this rule, usually when trying to save money, leads to the fact that the ball touches the side rubber not just above the center of the ball, but below, which contributes to the ball flying off the table or jumping above the surface after being reflected from the side.

The hardness of the rubber also depends on the type of game, since the mass of the ball is different and the rebound will be unpredictable! If in the Russian pyramid the side impacts do not play a very significant role and one can “turn a blind eye” to this, then for other types of billiards this issue will be fundamental and the consequences will be very noticeable even for a non-professional player.
The main requirement for billiard rubber is its constant elasticity along the entire length of the bead.
A change in trajectory may indicate either poor quality rubber or that it is not glued correctly.

5. Cloth

The cloth is an important detail in a billiard table, because it is the cloth that the ball and the player’s supporting hand come into contact with. It has a direct impact on the movement of the ball and, of course, the felt is most susceptible to wear, damage and replacement in the end. Good cloth, which is used to cover the slab, does not have to be re-tightened for a long time, it does not fade or fray. The “rolling” of the cloth depends on the chemical composition, the degree of twist of the thread, the density of the weave of the fibers, the presence of puffs and knots. The most quality billiard cloth made from worsted wool from a thread structure in which all short fibers have been removed. This is the know-how of the factory "Ivan Simonis" smoother and more permanent than any cloth in the world. The higher the digital component next to the cloth brand, the higher the degree of thread twist and the quality of the cloth, as a rule.

The most common types of cloth and its characteristics

Name Width Density Compound Application
Ivan Simonis 760 165/195 cm 355 gsm Pyramid, Poole
Ivan Simonis 860 165/195 cm 410 gsm Wool - 90%, Synthetics - 10% Pool, tournament
Iwan Simonis Rus 930 160/195 cm 325 gsm Wool - 85%, Synthetics - 15% Pyramid
Iwan Simonis Rus Pro 950 195 cm 370 g/sq.m Wool - 70%, Synthetics - 30% Pyramid, tournament
Hainsworth Elite Pro 160/198 cm 363 g/sq.m Wool - 70%, Synthetics - 30% Pyramid, Poole
Hainsworth Snooker 198 cm 480 g/sq.m Wool - 100% Snooker

What you need to pay attention to:
The cloth can be universal (Simonis 760, Hainsworth Elite Pro) - it can be used for both pool and pyramid, which is especially important for billiard clubs with different types tables; tournament (Simonis 860, Simonis Rus Pro 950) - for official tournaments this cloth and no other is required; special (Hainsworth Snooker) - exclusively for Snooker.
Narrow cloth - 160-165 cm wide can only be used to cover tables of 7-8 feet and no more!

6. Pockets

Pockets can be performed in various options: depending on the game and style: in the form of a closed “glass”, in the form of a mesh (woven or leather mesh), with slopes. On exclusive models of billiard tables, the mesh is made by hand-weaving macrame according to individual orders.
The most common pocketing problem is throwing the ball back onto the table. This is due to the incorrect geometry of the pocket bracket and the material used for shock absorption. But, much more often, problems with pockets arise as a result of incompetent actions of installers or problematic table design!
Problems can also arise during the operation of the pocket. From strong blows The material used often breaks down. Cracks and distortions may appear. And the table geometry itself can change under the influence of external factors, which will lead to problems with pockets that will immediately catch the players’ eyes.

Pool table size depends on the game for which it is intended. Sports billiards are divided into two main varieties - Russian and American, each of which requires special billiard tables. But Russian and American billiards are distinguished not so much by billiard tables as by the philosophy of the game itself. If used as a comparison card games, then Russian billiards is more like preference, and American billiards is more like poker.

For Russian billiards, tables with a playing field size from 8 to 12 feet are designed; billiard tables with a playing field of 7-9 feet are required. Having chosen a quality billiard table, it is also important to correctly calculate its size so that it fits into the room for which it is intended.

Before purchasing a billiard table, you need to determine which table is right for you. First of all, you need to determine the room where the table will be installed and select the optimal size table from the table:

Billiard room size

The size of the billiard room can be comfortable or minimal.

Comfortable size billiard room is calculated as follows: the size of the billiard table + the length of the cue (for a pyramid - 160 cm, for an American pool - 150 cm) + the distance that you need to swing. Usually this distance is 25-40 cm. With this arrangement of the billiards, nothing should interfere with your play.

The situation with the minimum size of a billiard room is somewhat more complicated. Usually minimum size is calculated using the formula: “the size of the playing field + the length of the cue.” Here the size of the playing field is taken into account, and not the size of the billiards. In this case, it will be inconvenient to hit from the board along a perpendicular trajectory, but you can afford to buy a larger table.

Minimum size The premises of the billiard room are given without taking into account the furniture. Sometimes some elements included in the design of a house or billiard room (columns, corners, railings, etc.) create inconvenience when playing. In this case, you can resort to shortened cues, which are used in the “dead” zones where you cannot play with a regular size cue.

Formula for calculating the size of Russian billiards:

cue length + pool table length + cue length.

Cue lengths for calculation:

  • Russian billiards - 160 cm,
  • American pool - 150 cm,
  • Snooker - 147 cm.

It is important for beginners to know that when playing Russian Pyramid, a professional or “full” table size is considered to be 12 feet diagonally or 3.55 m (length) by 1.77 m (width). If you are planning to buy a Russian billiards table not only for spending time with friends and family, but also for training for a sports competition, then try to make it exactly like this.

Of course, not everyone has one in their apartment. a large room, but at the dacha it is quite possible to put a similar table. Some fans of Russian billiards even build a special room for the game. And they can be understood, Russian billiards is a very exciting game.

In addition to such a large table, in stores you will see fields that have standard smaller sizes: 8 and 9 or 10 and 11 feet. Of course, it is best to train right away on a classic large field, but even on such fields you will practice your shots perfectly and master special techniques. It is best if an experienced player shows and tells everything to a beginner.

Determining the dimensions

When you purchase a billiard table to suit the size of your room, do not forget that the size should be such that the approach from all sides is no less than 1.64 m. After all, for a high-quality shot you need to swing the cue normally. Otherwise, you won't be able to play normally.

If the size of the table is such that it fits into the room, this does not mean that it will be convenient for you to hit the balls with a cue from all sides. Requires a room 6 to 15 times larger than the playing field. Approach the purchase issue responsibly, because billiard tables are expensive.

How to calculate which table will optimally fit into your room? It's simple. A lot of space is required when the player makes shots directly from the side at a right angle. If there is space from the side of the table plus the size of the cue, then you will be able to make such shots normally. You can buy a table for Russian billiards just like this field. Don’t forget that you need another 10 cm to swing, and so on around the table.

When calculating the minimum size of a room, furniture is not taken into account. And if there is one, you also need to retreat from it by the length of the cue. Do not forget.

There are interesting rooms with columns, railings, protruding bas-reliefs, etc. Such a room layout can create inconvenience. For example, from one or more places you will not be able to make a normal shot with a large cue. For such cases, shortened ones are provided. They are used in such “dead” zones.

What are the standard gaming tables?

Let's look at the standard sizes of billiard tables:
  1. With the parameters of a table for Russian billiards being 12 feet, its length will be 3.55 m and width 1.77 m. The space for playing will remain 6.83 m (length) and 5.05 m (width).
  2. The diagonal of the Russian billiards table is 11 feet. The length is 3.2 m and the width is 1.6 m. 6.48 m (length) and 4.88 m (width) remain for games.
  3. A table for playing Russian billiards of 10 feet assumes a playing floor length of 2.94 m and a width of 1.47 m. Free space of 6.22 m (length), 4.75 m (width).
  4. For Russian billiards you purchased a 9 ft. table. It turns out that the playing field is 2.54 m long and 1.27 m wide. The playing space is 5.82 m (length), 4.55 m (width). The smallest 8 ft pool table is 2.24 m long and 1.12 m wide. The playing space is 5.52 m (length) and 4.55 m (width).

When choosing the best billiard table for your premises, remember that the larger it is, the more interesting and intense the game. Experts recommend purchasing the most big table, which will fit into your room. The main thing is that every player from any position feels comfortable playing behind him.

If, in addition to the table, you want to place other furniture in the room, then calculate everything in advance so that it fits perfectly.

fit in. Furniture that is lower than the gaming table can be placed closer. If it is taller, let it stand against the walls. The main thing is to coffee table or comfortable chairs with the sofa there was at least 1.2 m left. Then it will be convenient to play billiards.

If the furniture is placed closer, it will get in the way; choose the most comfortable position to make a blow from the side. And furniture that is higher, for example, a wardrobe, chest of drawers, sideboard, etc. should be located even further behind the space for playing billiards (see recommendations above).

Measurement of the pool room (American)

Measuring the snooker room

If your billiard room is smaller the right size by 5-10 cm, you can use a shortened cue to hit from the edge of the board and a standard cue if the ball is at some distance from it in the playing field. This does not create any difficulties, since according to statistics, such “inconvenient” positions of the ball occur no more than 5% per game.

You can also take measurements of the room yourself using our tips.

The main parameter of a billiard table is the size of the playing field. The size of the playing field is usually considered to be the distance between two opposite sides of the table, and this distance is measured from the rubber side edges.

Currently there are basic billiard games: American pool, Russian pyramid and snooker. For a Russian pyramid, the size of the playing field should be from 6 to 12 English feet, and the cue length should be 160 cm. American pool is played on a field from 7 to 9 feet with a cue 145 cm long. The same cue size should be for playing snooker. When choosing a billiard table model, you need to consider that dimensions several billiard tables more sizes playing field. Therefore, when arranging a room for billiards, the dimensions of the game room must be calculated using the formula.

Billiard room size must be at least the sum of two cue lengths, the size of the playing field and a few centimeters for the swing.

1. Room length = two cue lengths + pool table length.

2. The width of the room = two lengths of the cue + the width of the pool table.

10 cm is added to the obtained values to provide some margin.

In addition, there is also a distinction between the minimum size of a game room and the comfortable size of a game room. When calculating the minimum size, only the sum of the size of the playing field and the length of the cue is taken into account, and when calculating a comfortable size, they take the sum of the size of the billiard table and the length of the cue, and add 25 -40 cm to it. Additional centimeters are required so that free play is possible when playing swing

If we are talking about billiard clubs or cafes in which There should be several billiard tables in one room, then it is recommended to arrange the tables so that there is a distance between them no less than the length of the cue. Very often, in billiard rooms, in addition to the billiard tables themselves, some other furniture is placed. The above formulas do not take this into account, so additional area should be provided for these purposes. Zones that cannot accommodate a regular-sized cue are called “dead zones.” A way out of the situation may be to use cues in these zones, the sizes of which are smaller than the standard ones.

No matter where you decide to set up a game room, in a commercial space or at home, you should always start by choosing the right size of pool tables. A correctly calculated ratio between the table and the room will ensure comfort when playing. There are special tables where all the standard dimensions are presented, and using them it is much easier to make a choice. But first things first.

Premises are selected with a certain calculation. Let's imagine the size of an American billiards table, apply a cue to each side and get the minimum size of a room convenient for playing. When making a billiard table with your own hands, you should take into account that this room will still have seating areas, perhaps even a bar. If you can’t fit it all into one room, then you can use folding billiard tables.

The club billiard table has larger dimensions. There, in addition to the standard table plus cue ratio, there is also a distance for a person’s swing, which is about 40 centimeters. In addition, the design provides for a distance between tables of at least 120 centimeters. It is worth noting the different lengths of the cue, for example:

  • American pool - 145 centimeters;
  • Russian pyramid - 155 centimeters.

Billiard table scales

It is worth remembering that pool tables will be the size of the game you prefer to play. The main types are now considered:

  • pool - from six to nine feet;
  • snooker - from ten to twelve feet;
  • Russian pyramid - from six to twelve feet.

You can make a billiard table with your own hands and give it arbitrary dimensions. In this case, you will need to take care of the cues, because they will also be needed in smaller sizes. There are standard sizes of tables, in accordance with the premises, which will be more clearly seen in the table.

Playing field Minimum room size
in feet in meters pyramid pool snooker
5 feet 1.65 x 0.85 m 4.5 x 3.7 m 4.5 x 3.7 m
6 feet 1.80 x 0.90 m 4.7 x 3.8 m 4.7 x 3.8 m
7 feet 1.99 x 0.99 m 4.9 x 3.9 m 4.9 x 3.9 m
8 feet 2.24 x 1.12 m 5.1 x 4.0 m 5.1 x 4.0 m
9 feet 2.54 x 1.27 m 5.8 x 4.5 m 5.4 x 4.1 m
10 foot 2.95 x 1.47 m 6.2 x 4.7 m 5.8 x 4.3 m
12 feet 3.50 x 1.75 m 6.8 x 5.0 m 6.4 x 4.6 m

Do not forget that manufacturers of billiard tables may deviate slightly from standard sizes, therefore, you should take your own measurements of both the room and the table before purchasing or making it yourself.

Making your own gaming table

Do not forget that you can make all billiard tables yourself. The main thing is to draw up the drawings correctly and select high-quality material for the work. First, measure the room and decide which type of game suits you best. The size of the billiard table will not matter if you make it prefabricated, then you can install it even in the open air, but in harmless weather.

Create a pleasant room interior. The harmony of the table and the room sets the mood for the game, and in general the cozy atmosphere lifts the mood. Practice and develop a room for billiards, dimensions play an important role there. Don’t forget that at some point a person will get tired of walking around the table and will need to sit down, so set up rest areas in advance.

If you decide to treat yourself to a games room, it doesn’t matter what kind of table you buy, be it an American table or a pool table. Calculate right size premises so that you can enjoy the game in the future, and not get annoyed by little things.

Take into account all centimeters, make drawings and drawings, calculate every detail of the planned image.

Billiard table sizes

On the Internet you can look at photos and video materials about what kind of billiard rooms there are and build on this interior, adding your own twists.
