Choosing building materials

Naturally, before you start making a picket fence with your own hands, you need to purchase the necessary Construction Materials, namely:

  • Support pillars;
  • Logs with fasteners;
  • Pickets;
  • Self-tapping screws;
  • Primer;
  • Paint.

As for the material from which the pickets should be made, this is at your discretion. Of course, wooden pickets are more natural material, but the main drawback is that they last no more than ten years. That is why many people prefer a metal picket fence, which looks no less attractive and has a fairly long service life.

Sometimes owners of summer cottages combine wooden and metal pickets in one fence, which can last for several decades. But in this case, you need to take into account the fact that wood tends to absorb moisture, and, therefore, will create an additional load on the support pillars.

IN construction stores Usually the length of the logs ranges from two to twelve meters. To reduce the load on the support pillars, the distance between them should not exceed four meters.

As a rule, metal pipes are used as support pillars, which are concreted in the ground at a depth of at least a meter.

Also note that at the top metal pipe there must be a special plug. That is, if you have decided on the material and size of the gate, then it is easy to calculate the number necessary materials. Also during the installation process you will need special fastenings for pickets. Of course, you can use a welding machine, but this is not always practical because it can lead to rust.

That is why it is best to purchase special fasteners.
To secure the finished metal picket fence, you will also need galvanized self-tapping screws, which can be screwed in quite easily with a screwdriver.

Making a fence from a metal picket fence with your own hands is not a difficult task. For many years, galvanized fences have been used in urban and suburban areas, where they have proven themselves to be strong and durable structures. A metal picket fence is a fairly simple structure that you can build yourself at a minimum of cost. Money, time and effort. The main thing is to arm yourself with certain knowledge and tools.

Ready-made fencing option

Picket fence

This is the most suitable hedge for a home. Garden fences made of metal picket fences look good.

Its popularity is easy to explain:

  1. Inexpensive type of fencing, affordable for any wallet.
  2. The structure is simple, familiar, laconic.
  3. Metal fencing is suitable for urban and private plots.
  4. Making such an iron fence is easy.

A garden fence made of a metal picket fence must be high enough and strong, and also serve decorative purposes. For residential building owners, the main thing is protection from intrusion and aesthetics. It can be intended for decorative purposes or as a fence for a vacation spot for summer residents.

Execution options

Metal picket fence - a laconic fence without additional decorative elements and design delights.

But the types of metal picket fence and its shape are different:

  1. Euro picket fence "Volna". Sections of such a fence are fastened so that the top line is first ascending and then descending. This makes a beautiful fence.
  2. Euro picket fence “Gorka” - the top forms an ascending line that rises smoothly. Considered a classic type of fencing, the design is universal.
  3. Metal picket fence “Concave arc” - the upper edge forms a smooth descending line, the width of the gaps is the same. The fence will fit into both urban and suburban landscapes. These fences are universal.
  4. Metal picket fence “Herringbone” - the original design of the top edge is suitable for a wooden country house.

Options and shapes of metal picket fences

In addition to the main types of metal picket fence presented, there are other varieties:

  • canyon;
  • peaks;
  • shuttered fences.

Ladder - comparatively the new kind, fencing of this type has a place in any landscape. Blinds from metal profile- a new product in the construction industry.

Features of the fence

A metal fence is made from a rectangular or semicircular profile. Metal thickness – more than 0.5 mm. The spans are covered with a layer of galvanization for an anti-corrosion effect.

The photo shows a metal picket fence.

Metal picket fence

The fence is lightweight and does not require a foundation for its installation. You can build a fence without complicated earthworks and strengthening existing structure unlike a fence made of corrugated sheets.

For strength, it is necessary to concrete the support pillars on which the logs are attached. More can be done robust construction on stilts.

The metal is coated for weather resistance. protective materials: polyester, polyester. The coating will give a beautiful glossy finish and resistance to fading. The diagram will show you how to paint it correctly.

The fence has long term operation without additional maintenance.

The strength is comparable to welded structures, and making an inexpensive fence from a picket fence is not difficult.

Color options

A metal picket fence is painted using one-sided or two-sided painting.

The back side is covered only with a layer of primer, the front side is covered with paint. This option looks good in summer cottages; it is suitable for lovers of calm tones.

If important bright look fencing on each side, choose options with double-sided coating.

Fences are painted with polymer or powder dye, as for products made from corrugated sheets.

Painted fence

When using polymer coating, technology must be followed. A fence with such protection can withstand almost any mechanical impact. If a scratch appears, the metal will not rust, since it has additional protection. Reviews about this method of painting are the most positive.

Powder coating is no less durable if done using technology, but it costs less. The first layer is protective, applied to the picket fence, the second is powder. All layers are baked in special chambers.

Powder coating is often imitated by unscrupulous manufacturers, whose products rust at the slightest damage. Polymer coating cannot be done using a homemade method, so it is of higher quality. You only need to buy a fence with a high-quality coating.

Types of metal picket fences

Fences of this type differ in the installation method, the size of the spans and the gaps between the structural elements. Their device is not the most complicated.

Fence installation methods

The metal fence is mounted on supports, which we install in the following ways:

  • concreting;
  • butting with crushed stone;
  • driving into the ground;
  • combined installation.

Installation diagram for fencing with brick pillars

Concreting is the most reliable way to install support pillars. Used in unstable soils. The height of the support is not less than 1 m.

The photo shows a fence made of Euro picket fence.

Distance between slats

Butting with crushed stone occurs on denser soils, when driving pillars alone will not be enough. You can strengthen the support with brick chips.

Driving into the soil is used for heavy soils. The supports are buried in the ground to a depth of 1 m and compacted in the holes made. If the soil is not too dense, then it will be more reliable to concrete the supports. The height of the pillar is at least 1 m.

Installation of a fence in the soil

Dimensions and distances

There are no standards for fence spacing. The distance is made for decorative and practical reasons. A large gap between the profile is used in decorative fences. The distance between the slats is calculated by taking into account the width of one profile. The smaller the size, the thicker the fence. However, you should not make a fence without gaps.

The size of one span is chosen taking into account the perimeter of the fenced area.

The height is chosen taking into account individual characteristics landscape and preferences of the owner of the house.

Euro picket sections

Types of Fills

One-sided - the profile is attached only from the front side. The distance between the elements is no more than 5 cm. The picket fence is attached in a double-sided manner with the elements staggered.

The checkerboard arrangement of the picket fence is popular despite the high consumption of material. The checkerboard fence seems solid; it is impossible to see the territory behind the fence.

Double-sided fence installation method

The combined (double) filling method preserves the view of the surrounding area. Some are filled out unilaterally, some are filled out in a checkerboard pattern. The size of the gaps is the same so that the fence looks organic. A double-sided palisade often encloses summer cottages. You can make a continuous fence like this. This type of metal picket fence is shown in the photo below.

DIY installation

DIY installation features

Consumables:

  • supports;
  • wooden or iron horizontal logs;
  • picket strips;
  • screws (metal, wood).

Installation Features

If the installation is carried out by hand, the technician may need the following tools:

  • drill-driver;
  • shovel;
  • riveter;
  • metal scissors;
  • roulette.

A peculiarity of the installation of this design is the absence of a foundation for a fence less than 1 m high. Fences more than 1 m high require a foundation, but less strong than the one on which a fence made of corrugated sheets is installed.

Next, you need to calculate consumables. Then they mark the area. To do this, clear the soil from branches and leaves, install metal picket fence supports. Logs are placed on the support posts, and galvanized strips are attached to them. All installation work carried out using building level to prevent distortion of the structure. How to calculate quantity consumables, look at the video.

DIY installation: step-by-step instructions

Installation of a fence from a pile palisade begins with the installation of supports and padding of the frame. Work on such a design is quite easy for a novice craftsman; he will not be puzzled by the question of how to make a fence from a metal picket fence on his own.

The video shows how to install fence posts.

You can read about how to make a fence from a European picket fence by following the link.

Installation of supports

First, markings are made for mounting the support. Digging holes required depth and width in accordance with the dimensions of the pillar. Reinforce with posts as long as the structure requires.

Drawing for installing a fence

Two profiles twisted together are used as support. You can make a fence from a metal picket fence on screw piles. Instead of profiles they take profile pipe. If desired, make a masonry of brick pillars for a metal picket fence.

Then the foundation supports are leveled. Fill the prepared depressions in the soil with cement solution and fix the supports. Installation continues after the solution has completely dried, this is about two days. You can substitute brick supports for fixation.

Scheme for installing a fence

As soon as the supports are concreted, the transverse joists are attached. A quarter of a meter is retreated from the uppermost point of the support and a mark is made. Carry out similar markings on other pillars using a level.

The fastening secures the upper cross member to the base. The lower strips are mounted to the metal in the same way; the size of the indentation from the ground should be at least half a meter. The gate is sheathed separately. You can attach a metal picket fence.

Euro picket fence is an inexpensive, practical and aesthetically attractive option for fencing the dacha and yard of a private house. A fence and a gate made of a metal picket fence are easy to install with your own hands - the slats are screwed with self-tapping screws to the joists at some distance from each other. The design can be with or without a frame. Pillars for such a design can be made of any material.

If you place the pickets in one row, the area will be clearly visible from the street and will also allow light to pass through, Sun rays, air, which is important for the growth and development of plants. To block the view of the yard, boards are “stuffed” on both sides of the log in a checkerboard pattern.

Advantages

  • Diversity color range, width (70 - 128 mm) and length (50 - 300 mm) of planks allows you to create interesting design, suitable for the exterior. The metal thickness is standard - 0.4 - 0.5 mm.
  • The boards are made of galvanized steel, coated with a polymer composition on one or both sides - the coatings protect the metal from moisture and prevent the development of corrosion and burnout.
  • Long period of use - from 30 years or more.
  • The strength of the metal, the level of which depends on the type of profile - products are produced with a U-, M- and C-shaped profile, the latter is considered the most reliable - anti-vandal.
  • Easy care - a fence with a metal picket fence does not require painting; it can be washed with plain water from a hose.

Even on good fence Gates and gates should stand out and greet guests with their friendly appearance. How to do it yourself?

European picket gate with brick pillars

The simplest option - highlighting with color - does not always work. It is best to use another material for this. Then you can experiment with color, shape, and design.

Selection of material for the gate

We will not look for options for expensive fences made of forged lattice and brick walls: Anyone who has the opportunity to build such a fence will also find money for a designer.

For fences made of other materials, gates and wickets made from Euro picket fences are a good choice. Since its appearance on the market, it has been in constant demand, because it has many advantages over both wood and profiled sheets:

  • Unlike wood, the Euro picket fence does not rot, because it is made of galvanized steel and coated with two layers polymer paint. Service life – up to 50 years.
  • The variety of colors and textures in combination with different profiles and sizes allows the use of metal pickets in various fences and structures: from flower beds and front gardens to the manufacture of wickets, gates, and even as a fence on the site. The width of the plank is from 70 to 128 and the length from 0.5 to 3 - this is enough to “fence” whatever your heart desires.
  • Transportation even with your own hands is not difficult: packs of picket fences do not take up much space.
  • You can make a wicket, gate and fencing from European picket fences with your own hands. Light planks can be aligned along the cord and attached with self-tapping screws alone.
  • The best part is that the design of the fence and gate made of Euro picket fence can be anything. Choose the profile, color, and shape of the plank. You change the height and width of the picket fence, install it with different gaps, in one or two rows. Can you imagine how many options there are for designing the entrance to the site?

Picket fence design options
  • And all this beauty does not require maintenance or regular painting. In case of damage, it is enough to replace a couple of strips.

Some production features

Features lie in the processing method.

Galvanized and painted metal strip is passed through rollers, which gradually form a profile, then cut to the specified size. This treatment does not deform the metal coating.

There is another production - “garage”. Sometimes the strips are cut from ready-made corrugated sheets; in other cases, the profile is bent using a homemade stamp-press, damaging the polymer coating. To refine the cut edges, they are bent 180°; in this case, the paint may completely peel off.

Therefore, when buying a European picket fence, you need to pay attention to the quality of workmanship. Do not buy from dubious manufacturers.

How to make a gate from metal picket fence

Now that the agony of choosing the material and design of the wicket and gate is over, you can begin to put your ideas into practice.

First of all, you need to prepare the tools and materials:

  • A tape measure, a screwdriver, an angle grinder, almost everyone has a level now.
  • To install the pillars you will need a drill, sand, crushed stone, and cement.
  • Without welding machine It is impossible to mount the frame of the wicket and gate. It’s good if you are a welder and can make the gate yourself, otherwise you’ll have to look for a craftsman.
  • Self-tapping screws to match the color of the metal picket fence, primer, paint, and grinder circles are consumables.

Let us immediately note that the posts for gates and gates must stand firmly: they are not connected into a single “chain”, like fence posts. That is why when they lay strip foundation for a fence with brick columns, the foundation is not interrupted under the entrance to the site. If a strip foundation is not required, then the “entrance” pillars are installed especially carefully.

  1. Regardless of the soil, we drill a well deeper than the freezing level.
  2. Add a layer of sand to the bottom and tamp it down.
  3. We are preparing the pillars. For them we use a pipe Ø100 mm or a profile pipe 80 by 80 with a wall thickness of at least 2-3 mm. We take the length with a small margin. We weld 2 transverse struts at the bottom of the pipes; they will prevent the soil from pushing the pillars out of the ground. After this, the columns are primed and painted.
  4. We install the pillars in the wells, align them with the cord and level.
  5. Fill it with concrete to a quarter of the height and check for correct installation. You should not fill the hole completely with concrete: this increases the adhesion surface of the concrete to the soil and the pushing force increases.
  6. After a day or two, when the concrete has set, fill the hole to the top with a mixture of sand and crushed stone. We tamp in layers.

Self-installed poles stand firmly and are not subject to being pushed out. You can lay a brick pillar around the metal base, make formwork and fill the pillar with cobblestones, or assemble a fake pillar from plastic blocks.

Having installed the pillars, we measure the distance between them and make frames for the wicket and gate. If you don’t have a welding machine, and you don’t have the opportunity to make them yourself, contact your friends and neighbors - now many people have welding at home. Frames must have reinforcements, especially gate leaves.

After all welding work Gate frames and gates are cleaned and primed. After drying, paint in two layers.

It is not difficult to mount a Euro picket fence with your own hands, which is what we will do now. For this:

  • First, mark the position of the planks so that the gaps between them are the same. We take into account that during installation the gaps will be covered with slats of the second row. This way you can adjust the “transparency” of the gate.
  • We stretch the cord to the desired height and begin to attach the picket fence. Have you already stocked up screws to match the color of the gate?
  • It won’t be difficult to install the gate: after all, it’s just two more gates, but larger in size.

When making a gate from a European picket fence, take the time to try on, mark, and install at the level of each plank, and do not skimp on installing the posts. The entrance to the site is its face and it should be beautifully decorated.

To ensure the finished look of a house or cottage, a variety of turnkey fences are erected. The fence is primarily intended to describe the outer boundary of the territory. And it has a practical meaning, for example, it serves as protection against the entry of unwanted guests, and ensures peace. And when choosing installation methods, the turnkey fence is considered the most profitable; its price includes all the hassle associated with installing the finished structure.
