How to bend pvc pipe at home. How to bend a polypropylene pipe at home and avoid deformation Bending under high temperature: features of the hot bend method

PVC pipes as raw material for manufacturing various crafts and homemade are used more and more often. Sometimes masters give them an ornate curved shape and the final work after application finish coat even trimmed do not resemble the original material. In this master class, we will demonstrate this technique to you.

materials

To bend a PVC pipe you will need:

  • the pipe itself;
  • strong tape;
  • sand;
  • funnel;
  • metal container;
  • gas or electric stove;
  • protective gloves;
  • knife or scissors;
  • saw or hacksaw, as well as sandpaper.

In addition, you will need a pipe bender. In this case, a piece of plywood with dowels planted in the thickness was used.

Step 1. Usually used for pipe bending gas-burner, but with its help it is possible to give the pipe only a slight bend and only in a small area.

It is difficult to work out significant segments of such material in this way. It takes a lot of time, moreover, pipes often bend during work, which does not look aesthetically pleasing.

To bend the pipe, as you see in the photo of the final work, it needs to be evenly heated from the inside. For this difficult operation, we use sand. So, first of all, you need to cut a piece of the required length from the PVC pipe and clean the edges of the cut.

Step 2. One end of the pipe must be sealed with tape. The tape should completely cover the hole.

Step 3. With the help of a funnel, sand must be poured into the pipe. Take it so much that the pipe is completely filled with it.

Step 4. Having measured the required amount of sand, pour it into a metal bowl and warm it up well. The sand must be hot.

Step 5. Put on protective gloves on your hands. Using the same funnel, pour the prepared sand back into the pipe.

Step 6. Cover the other end of the pipe with tape. This is necessary so that the sand does not spill out during work.

Step 7. Leave the pipe like this for a couple of minutes. During this time, it will warm up from the inside. The material will become soft and pliable.

Polypropylene pipes are the most common material that is often used when installing a heating system. A pipe made of polypropylene is able to withstand the effects of high-temperature coolants and well tolerates pressure of several atmospheres inside the pipeline.

The disadvantage of PPR pipes is that they are sold straight, and to create systems of complex configurations, a pipe with a certain bend is often needed, which must be done manually.

However experienced craftsmen repairs often involve bending pipes, and this does not cause problems with deformation or loss of strength.

During build complex system heating, it is necessary to create structures of complex configurations.

Let's say in apartment buildings, where each room has a separate riser and one radiator, the system is very simple. One pipe goes from the riser to the radiator, the second - back. Sometimes they are connected by a third. In this case, bending does not make sense. It is enough to put the correct connecting elements in the amount of 4 - 6 pieces.

The situation is different in a private house, where heating has to be laid from scratch, starting from the boiler and removing pipes from basements upstairs to all rooms. Sometimes it is difficult in this case to build a straight-line system that will be devoid of turns and changes in pipe laying height. It is possible to install two different pipes connected by a special coupling in all places of the bends, but this is laborious, costly and less efficient.

Another large area of application for bent polypropylene pipes is the underfloor heating system. The fact is that the pipes in this case are laid according to a pre-planned scheme, resembling a tubular electric heater in shape. washing machine or "serpentine" in the bathroom.

Quite often when construction works when the owner makes overhaul with his own hands, before him arises whole line problems that have to be solved by using improvised tools. For example, it is very often necessary to give a plastic product a curvilinear shape. Of course, you can go to the store and buy already ready product, but the search for a suitable product can take a long time, so we will try to figure out how to bend plexiglass, plastic, polycarbonate (i.e. plastic) at home.

The very name "plastics" combines a huge range of synthetic or natural polymers that can easily deform and change their shape when heated. Accordingly, after the material hardens, it becomes solid again. It is this property of plastics that we will use when answering the question about the possibility of bending plexiglass or plastic.

There are several ways to bend a sheet of organic glass. Consider two: using an industrial hair dryer or a soldering iron. In the first case, the part of the glass that needs to be deformed is gently heated with a hair dryer to a plastic state. The rest is covered with moistened rags to avoid heating. It remains to bend the canvas to the desired position and wait until the material hardens.

Another way, with a soldering iron, is convenient when you need to bend the sheet at an angle of 90 degrees or sharper. First, we outline the line of the future fold with a pencil, after which, heating the soldering iron, we draw it several times along the mark, achieving heating and melting of the material. With a soldering iron tip, you will need to “remove” about a third of the thickness of the sheet, after which we bend the glass under right angle and fix it until completely cooled.

We bend plastic

Very often when carrying out repairs in an apartment or country house need to bend plastic part. For example, to give the skirting boards a curvilinear shape. Today it is very fashionable to have in the house curved ceilings, and plastics are often used as a material for a ceiling plinth. How to bend ceiling plinth? If the radius of curvature of the material is large, then you can try to warm up such a baseboard using the same industrial hair dryer. This must be done very carefully, because, for example, a foam plinth can easily melt. Be sure to practice on some small piece of plinth before you get to work.

Calculating the minimum radius of plastic curvature is simple: you need to multiply the thickness of the plastic by 230. That is, if the plastic has a thickness of 5 mm, then the minimum bending radius will be 1,150 mm.

We bend polycarbonate

Polycarbonate sheets are often used for the manufacture of canopies, canopies, greenhouses. This material has excellent strength and flexibility. Bending polycarbonate is a simple matter. For this, there is no need to heat the material. You just need to check with the seller for what minimum bending radius the purchased polycarbonate is designed for. Well, take into account the obvious - that the thicker the material, the more difficult it is to deform.

Bend, but do not bend before difficulties! And then you will succeed!

Hello colleagues. I needed to bend a piece of plastic and this is how I solved this problem. From a piece laminated chipboard I cut out a small table top and legs. On the underside of the tabletop I attached a twelve-volt power supply, a terminal block and a pair of hooks for winding wire with a plug. From the end I screwed a piece on 3 self-tapping screws P-shaped aluminum profile.

As a heating element, I used nichrome wire from a broken building hair dryer. The working area (the length of the heated area) turned out to be 43 cm. It was easy to assemble this design, it was more difficult to correctly install the nichrome thread.

The requirements were:

1 It was necessary to take into account that the wire will elongate when heated and shrink when cooled. At the same time, it must be constantly stretched.

2 The material that will hold the wire in a horizontal position must be heat resistant and non-conductive.

3 Be sure to adjust the height of the distance from the wire to the heated part.

The questions were answered in this way. I cleaned several textolite plates and glued them together with epoxy. As you know, textolite can withstand fairly high temperatures. To adjust the height, I cut a thread directly in the material and tightened the long bolts with a slot on the cap. I went through a bunch of springs and found 2 suitable ones - short and not very tight. The wire tension turned out to be optimal.

The selection of the power supply was carried out by the method of scientific poke - thirty and forty-watt blocks did not heat the wire, seventy-watt and hundred-watt ones were heated to red. I tried everything in order (there was such a possibility) and settled on a 60W unit. With a length nichrome wire 43 - 48 cm, he gave the best result. 12-volt units have one negative feature - if there is no load in the on state, they can instantly fail. This means that if the wire breaks during operation, the block may burn out. Therefore, the wire had to be wound onto the bolts, avoiding sharp bends. It is very brittle and breaks easily.
