Composition of matches. What are matches made of? Gas and petrol lighters

In today's article we will talk about how to quickly make hunting matches for lighting a fire in extreme conditions.

How to make hunting matches

When we are going hunting, fishing, or simply on a hiking trip, we must certainly stock up on essentials, including those for lighting a fire in an open area, and even in extreme conditions. Yes, you will say that I have a lighter or a box of matches for this occasion. You have probably experienced something like this when a lighter fails when it gets wet, frozen, or the flint just flew out, and your matches got damp.

Just in such a case it is necessary to have with you the means for ignition. These funds must adequately withstand tests for humidity, gusty winds and, not least, they burned for a sufficient amount of time to calmly kindle a fire in an open area. Such means include familiar hunting matches.

Properties of hunting matches

The difference between hunting and simple matches is that hunting matches have an additional so-called coating. It allows matches to be moisture resistant, long burning, and their flame is large and hot. These matches can keep the fire going for up to 20 seconds. You can set them on fire in damp and windy weather, as they are not afraid of moisture. Hunting matches can be used in a wide range of areas of our activity: hunting, fishing, camping and just on vacation, where many unpleasant situations can occur, and such matches always come to the rescue.

So how do you actually make hunting matches with your own hands? You can see it clearly in the following video:

Perhaps you will be interested.

ABOUT ancient ways kindling fire we know mainly from the history and descriptions of travelers who observed them in the camps of the so-called backward tribes. They themselves have long been accustomed to using matches. It should be noted that in last years lighters and auto-ignition were added to them. gas stoves. However, matches to this day have not lost their relevance. But how much do we know about them? How often do people look closely at such familiar, everyday things?

Matches are different

Even the simplest, “homemade” matches are conceived quite cunningly. The main secret in their heads, which satisfy two almost opposite requirements: the tip of the match should not fall off the stick when ignited, crumble during storage, and at the same time the stick should go out almost instantly when it burns out a little.

Even more difficult are the tasks that hunting matches must perform. They are charged with the obligation to burn much longer, they must give a large and hot flame, and they are supposed to light up both in the wind and in the rain. As a result, hunting matches below the head are coated with an additional composition and can burn from 10 to 20 seconds - what you need when you kindle a fire in "non-flying" conditions. Covering the head with a special film prevents it from getting wet. So a quality product can ignite even in the rain.

Storm matches are even more “weather-resistant”: naphthalene and starch are also included in their coating, so that even a wind of 12 points is not an obstacle to their flaring up.

For those who rarely use such incendiary sticks, we note: it is undesirable to use them in an apartment (house) - they have too large a flame, and they smoke with a pungent and unpleasant odor.

The most famous way

Hunting matches can be bought at any specialized store for fishermen and hunters. However, if this is not observed near your house, and you are too lazy to go looking for it, then you can handle it yourself. Most often, do-it-yourself hunting matches are made from ordinary ones with additional substances: silver, nitrolac and ammonium nitrate. Serebryanka is mixed with saltpeter in equal amounts, varnish is added to them. Everything is kneaded like dough until it starts to resemble it. The resulting "plasticine" is thinly rolled out (better glass bottle, which after it is not a pity to throw it out). The pancake is cut into the narrowest possible stripes, not wider than a couple of millimeters, and even better - even narrower. These ribbons are wound on a match in a spiral, from the head to the middle of the stick. Almost finished hunting matches are left to dry, after which the wound strips are varnished. In no case do not varnish the head - without sulfur, the match will not ignite. Of course, the work is painstaking, almost jewelry, but in the country, on a hike or fishing, you will not be left without fire.

Can be done differently

Less well known is another way to make a hunting match. Instead of the above components, cotton threads and paraffin are suitable. The threads are tightly wound around household matches, preferably not in one layer. The head, of course, remains open. Paraffin is melted, and workpieces are dipped into it. It’s easier to just throw matches at him, and then catch them; but, in order not to wait for excess "wax" to drain, it is better to take each with tweezers and dip into the melt.

But no matter what method you use to make hunting matches, do not forget to take care of the dry "scribbler" (or "chirkalka" - call it what you want). Without it, the most water-resistant matches will not light. The easiest method is to keep it in a tightly tied condom.

Useful for the holidays too!

Craftsmen believe that such a hunting device is appropriate not only in field conditions. If a few small iron filings are introduced into the composition with which matches are processed in the first manufacturing variant, then during combustion one can observe a beautiful spark fireworks, similar to the one they give. You don’t want to cancel the holiday in bad weather, and not every factory product “agrees” to work in dampness. So you can please children with safe homemade products.

Matches Hunting suitable for use even in the worst climatic conditions. The burning time of one match is on average 20 seconds, during which time you can easily light a fire even with damp small twigs. Matches are not afraid of wind or moisture. Buy hunting matches and give yourself the opportunity not to be nervous that the matches are constantly going out from the wind. We offer matches famous company Cedar plus, many are already familiar with their products and use only these matches.

Matches are made from a wood stick (straw) with a head that ignites when rubbed against a spread (grater). This grater is applied to the sides of the matchbox.

Aspen is used as a raw material for the manufacture of match straws, less often - linden. To do this, a tape - veneer is removed in a spiral with a special knife, which is then stacked in layers and chopped into match straws.

When a match is burned, it is necessary, firstly, to obtain a non-smoldering ember from the straw, and secondly, to keep hot slag from the burnt head on it in order to protect the consumer from burns through clothes if red-hot slag gets on it. In addition, a smoldering ember from a straw naturally represents fire hazard. To prevent smoldering of the straw and to fix slag from the head on it, the straw is impregnated with substances that form a film on its surface during combustion. Thanks to this film, the combustion of coal stops. The same film fixes the slag from the head. Used as anti-aging agents phosphoric acid and its salt - diammonium phosphate (NH 4) 2 HPO 4

To ensure the transition of the flame from the head to the straw, the latter near the head is impregnated with molten paraffin. Matches with non-waxed straws go out almost immediately after the head burns out. Paraffin, on the other hand, ignites easily when the head burns and gives a bright flame.

Rain, wind, slush, you need to make a fire, dry out and warm up a little, but the lighter failed. It turned out to be of poor quality, the valve slowly released all the gas. Or simply can not cope with the wind and dampness, goes out. Hunting matches are designed to get out of such situations.

Materials and accessories

A match consists of a head, which is struck on a grater on a box, and a straw, a thin wooden stick.

1. Regular matches are required. And quite a lot, several boxes. From them we will extract a composition containing sulfur and Bertolet's salt. That is to remove the heads.

2. Wooden chips that will serve as straws for future products. Definitely dry. They can be obtained, for example, by carefully splitting pencils lengthwise into four parts.

3. A knife, a mortar, a sheet of paper, some old cup from which no one drinks anymore. And also a piece of plasticine. Or any other suitable tools, which can be used to perform the following actions.

Manufacturing

First, we clean the heads from the matches. That is, we separate the flammable composition from the straws. You can use a knife. Or whoever is more comfortable. You just need to collect a slide from this composition on a sheet of paper, trying to minimize the presence of wood shavings.

Then pour the prey into a mortar and very carefully grind into powder. Bertolet's salt detonates from excessive mechanical impact, so you should work really carefully.

Ready? Pour the powder into a cup. The one from which no one has been drinking for a long time and, most importantly, is not going to drink from now on. A glass will do. We arm ourselves with a stick and begin to add water to the powder, thoroughly stirring the composition.

It should be something viscous, similar to dense dirt. We spread this mass on pre-prepared straws. On those very dry chips, when cutting which, of course, you were careful and did not get hurt.

Spread generously and at least half the length of the future match. The larger and more abundant, the higher the resistance to wind and moisture, the easier it is to kindle a fire. But that's later, but for now we move on.

Why is plasticine needed? In general, it is not so important how you set the matches vertically. The easiest way is to stick them into plasticine immediately after spreading. Why vertical? So that the mass applied to them under the influence of gravity does not shift to one side. Let it slide evenly along the straw. Otherwise, when ignited, ignited pieces will fly off in an unpredictable direction.

In general, we leave the matches to dry for at least a day. Until complete and unconditional drying of the composition with sulfur and bartolet salt.

Usage

For ignition, we use the usual Matchbox, more precisely, his grater. We strike carefully and in a safe direction (away from ourselves), because due to the large mass of the composition, the ignition process will be quite intense, sparks can fly off. Smoke emitted during combustion (sulphurous gas) should not be inhaled.

You don't have to wait until the match is lit. We use it immediately for its intended purpose. That is, for making a fire. By the way, you must have hurried to throw away the straws from ordinary matches, from which the heads were removed? In vain. They would make a good auxiliary kindling, especially if you poured a whole handful. Since they are impregnated with acid in order to obtain a stable flame (so that the wood does not smolder).
