In no case do not varnish the head - without sulfur, the match will not ignite. Of course, the work is painstaking, almost jewelry, but in the country, on a hike or fishing, you will not be left without fire.
Can be done differently
Less well known is another way to make a hunting match. Instead of the above components, cotton threads and paraffin are suitable. The threads are tightly wound around household matches, preferably not in one layer. The head, of course, remains open. Paraffin is melted, and workpieces are dipped into it. It’s easier to just throw matches at him, and then catch them; but, in order not to wait for excess "wax" to drain, it is better to take each with tweezers and dip into the melt.

Manufacturing
First, we clean the heads from the matches. That is, we separate the flammable composition from the straws. You can use a knife. Or whoever is more comfortable. You just need to collect a slide from this composition on a sheet of paper, trying to minimize the presence of wood shavings.
Then pour the prey into a mortar and very carefully grind into powder. Bertolet's salt detonates from excessive mechanical impact, so you should work really carefully.
Ready? Pour the powder into a cup. The one from which no one has been drinking for a long time and, most importantly, is not going to drink from now on. A glass will do. We arm ourselves with a stick and begin to add water to the powder, thoroughly stirring the composition.
It should be something viscous, similar to dense dirt. We spread this mass on pre-prepared straws. On those very dry chips, when cutting which, of course, you were careful and did not get hurt.
Spread generously and at least half the length of the future match. The larger and more abundant, the higher the resistance to wind and moisture, the easier it is to kindle a fire. But that's later, but for now we move on.
Why is plasticine needed? In general, it is not so important how you set the matches vertically. The easiest way is to stick them into plasticine immediately after spreading. Why vertical? So that the mass applied to them under the influence of gravity does not shift to one side. Let it slide evenly along the straw. Otherwise, when ignited, ignited pieces will fly off in an unpredictable direction.
In general, we leave the matches to dry for at least a day. Until complete and unconditional drying of the composition with sulfur and bartolet salt.
Usage
For ignition, we use the usual Matchbox, more precisely, his grater. We strike carefully and in a safe direction (away from ourselves), because due to the large mass of the composition, the ignition process will be quite intense, sparks can fly off. Smoke emitted during combustion (sulphurous gas) should not be inhaled.
You don't have to wait until the match is lit. We use it immediately for its intended purpose. That is, for making a fire. By the way, you must have hurried to throw away the straws from ordinary matches, from which the heads were removed? In vain. They would make a good auxiliary kindling, especially if you poured a whole handful. Since they are impregnated with acid in order to obtain a stable flame (so that the wood does not smolder).
