DIY barrel table. How to make a wooden barrel with your own hands? DIY furniture made from metal barrels

Or is it lying around somewhere else? old barrel, then do not rush to throw it away, as it can be used to make useful thing. Also, with its originality, the table will attract the attention of guests, and will also have at its disposal a separate place for storing various small items. In this article I will tell you how the author made a homemade coffee table.

In order to make such a table you need:
* Wine barrel
* Several boards
* Material for processing, varnish or stain, wood oil is also suitable
* Tape measure and pencil
* Sandpaper of various grain sizes
* Bolts and screws
* A circular saw
* Electric drill
* Jigsaw

That's all you need to create homemade table from a barrel.

Step one.
First of all, you need to decide which barrel the table will be made from, after which, using circular saw you need to cut the barrel in half lengthwise. When working with a circular saw, be careful and maintain safety precautions, wear safety glasses, gloves and a respirator if necessary, as final grinding Very fine wood dust flies with fine sandpaper.

Step two.
Now we have two halves of the barrel, we need to carry out a cleaning procedure with them, but not only with the wooden part, but also with the metal part, namely the rim. When cleaning, be careful and do not overdo it with rough tools on the wood.

Step three.
To prevent the barrel, or rather the future coffee table, from quickly becoming unusable, you need to protect the surface from mechanical and other influences. It is best to protect the surface with stain or varnish, apply a thin layer and let the material dry; to improve it, you need to repeat the operation a couple more times. Also do not forget to cover the metal parts of the barrel with a protective layer. Now all you have to do is wait until the varnish or stain dries and you can move on to the next step.

Step four.
Securing a barrel is not so easy, so you need to do this special mount, which we cut out of boards. First, we mark the curved lines that are equal to the diameter of the barrel we are using. We cut out the parts according to the markings, for this we will use a jigsaw.

Step five.
For greater stability of the table as a whole, you need to make a partition from a board that will stand perpendicular to the legs made earlier. We secure everything with self-tapping screws using a screwdriver.

Step six.
Using a tape measure, we measure the length of the barrel and attach another board at the base, which should connect the legs together. It is best to secure it strictly in the center.

After the board is fixed, you need to sand everything thoroughly and this needs to be done in several stages, starting with a coarse grit, ending with a fine grit of about 800. When the wooden parts are sanded, you need to cover their surface with varnish or stain at your discretion, you can also consider the option of oil treatment for wood, which will also express the texture and add beauty to the wood.

Step seven.
But what kind of coffee table is it if it doesn’t have a tabletop? This is exactly what we will do now; using a circular saw, we cut the boards to the required length, equal to the length of the barrel, and glue them together with wood glue. In order not to hold the parts while they dry, we clamp them with clamps, the main thing is not to squeeze them, so as not to leave a mark on the wood.

Step eight.
For greater reliability of the table, namely the tabletop, you need to secure it cross beams on the bottom side, which will create a more durable frame and prevent the table from breaking along the adhesive seam.

Step nine.
Now you need to build a frame for the table. The cut of the boards should be at an angle of 45 degrees for joints with another board, and the frame should be the same size as the tabletop and not extend beyond its frame.

Step ten.
It is easy to add texture to wood using sanding.
We sand the frame and tabletop in stages to achieve smooth surface, after which we cover it with varnish, stain, etc. and wait for it to dry completely.

The barrel is one of man's most ingenious inventions. No wonder some outstanding thinkers sat in them for days. What haven’t I made from these barrels? And a velomobile, an electric car, a safe, a stove, a smokehouse, and even a double bass! And today I decided to make a table out of a barrel.

To do this, I sawed the barrel crosswise into two equal parts. In order to strengthen the legs to the barrel, I had to work a little. To do this, it was necessary to make a couple of elements that should be attached to the barrel. And then there are the legs themselves. At the point of contact of these elements with the barrel, they must repeat the geometry of this barrel itself (have a semicircle). This part is fastened with self-tapping screws, which are screwed from the internal cavity of the barrel. The legs of the table, with one edge, are attached directly to the barrel (also from the inside with self-tapping screws), and with their main part they are attached directly to the intermediate part, which we previously attached securely to the barrel.

It is advisable to strengthen the tabletop on the barrel using furniture hinges. If the tabletop is on hinges, then the barrel will serve us as a wonderful place to store all sorts of things and objects.

To avoid injury from the sharp edges of the barrel (when the tabletop is raised), they can be edged with wood or plastic pipe. This pipe can be cut lengthwise and placed on a sharp edge.

Nowadays, a barrel not only has a practical function. Today, for storing liquids or anything else, they are used in warehouses, wine cellars, and so on. IN decorative purposes they began to be manufactured relatively recently. If handled skillfully, they can be used for decoration. garden plot, as well as in the form of furniture: chairs, tables, bar counters, etc.

Even a well-worn barrel can be restored and used for other purposes. This, of course, requires a fair amount of imagination. You also need to take into account its condition so that the material does not become too dry over time, otherwise all efforts will come to naught during the first time of its operation. There are actually a lot of ideas on how to turn such a container into something more functional or beautiful. For example, in the garden you can create a mini-flowerbed on it, and on several levels. Or make interesting table or a bench. You can even organize a fountain in them, but it won’t last long if the wood is not properly treated: under the influence of water, it can quickly lose both its aesthetic appearance and its strength. Some craftsmen adapt a barrel for a washbasin: to do this, a sink is inserted into the upper part, and a pipe is installed inside the barrel.

Before mounting the barrel, you must first make the frets. These are wooden planks that are cut from a tree trunk. They can also be made by splitting wooden blocks. Sawn, as a rule, is stronger than split logs because it is not always possible to split the log correctly, and because of this, some of the strength may be lost.

It has long been customary to fasten frets into a single structure using metal hoops, which are made of durable sheet steel. To make the barrel even more durable, you can additionally nail them. The number of hoops depends on the height of the barrel, but, as a rule, there are at least three.

The last step is installing the bottom. After it is installed on the owl, a hoop is put on to secure it, which is also additionally nailed for greater strength.
