After laying the mixture, it is compacted with a rammer (often manual, but it is also possible to compact with a vibrating plate). The compaction starts at the edges of the card and ends in the center. For greater efficiency at the end of the rammer, the patched pothole is sprinkled on top sand materials or granite dust.   • Sand ½ wheelbarrow.
So, let's move on to the description of this method of sealing holes on the roads:
  • First, it is worth clearing the pit of water, dirt and debris - an ordinary broom will help you!);
  • After that, fill the pit with fine-grained lime rubble to the level of the asphalt canvas. I draw your attention to the fact that it is best suited for small limestone crushed stone.   • After backfilling with rubble, it should be compacted with any improvised means. For example, you can drive a car over it 6-7 times;

  • The mastic must be heated over a fire for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally with a stick. After 20-30 minutes, the mastic should acquire a liquid consistency;
  • After heating the mastic, it must be poured evenly on the rubble so that there is no empty seats. Special attention it is worth paying attention to the edges of the junction with the old asphalt - these places should be spilled especially carefully;

  • Then, on the resulting “black” surface, it is necessary to pour sand with a layer of 2-3 cm. The sand should cover the entire surface of our former pit so that the mastic is not visible under it. This is done so that passing cars will crush the sand mixed with mastic into the voids between the crushed stone fractions and at the same time not dirty the wheels on the hot bituminous mastic. You should not feel sorry for the sand ... everything superfluous will be pulled away very quickly by cars and the wind.

  • After backfilling with sand, you can immediately safely start driving cars along the former pit. There is nothing wrong with this, on the contrary, it contributes to a better compaction of our patch. Sand under the weight of cars mixes with bitumen and seeps between the rubble, which contributes to better bonding of the patch. This item is extremely important and it is its execution that will ensure the integrity of the patch for many years.
  • In the photo below you see a patch made in the manner described above, which has already passed 2 years. Please note that the patch costs like a stone. The asphalt around it has long been cracked, and the patch is as good as new. So this method in the long run is extremely effective and cheap. And most importantly, anyone can perform such work, even without such experience.

By the way, in addition to the pits, we also recommend pouring hot bituminous mastic with sand on cracks in the asphalt. The mastic will stick them together and prevent water from getting inside the cracks.
