How to care for a homemade Christmas tree in a pot. Canadian spruce in a pot: reproduction. Growing from a branch

Make you think. Is the two-week presence of a Christmas tree in the house worth such sacrifices? It is even sadder to observe a picture after the New Year, when the discarded former "green beauties" flaunt everywhere. Exists Alternative option buy a live Christmas tree. She will delight you with her appearance even after the end of the winter holidays. No, this is not an artificial tree, but decorative spruce in a pot. Caring for her is a little more difficult, but in the end you will get a real beauty in your garden.

Choosing a Christmas tree

Spruce in a tub is a great way to slow down the clearing of coniferous forests. In addition, it ceases to be fragrant after a couple of days, and crumbling needles now and then dig into the heels. This cannot be said about the planted spruce. decorative types amaze with their diversity, even the most sophisticated gourmet will be able to choose a plant to their liking.

If you decide to buy a Christmas tree and plant it yourself, pay attention to its root system. Her condition will be a harbinger of the plant. In conifers, it is predominantly deep. If, due to its length, the tree does not fit in a pot, find a large container or plant it in open ground. In no case do not shorten the root of the plant, otherwise it will live no longer than a cut spruce. Decorative dwarf beauty has a more compact root system. Therefore, this species is excellent for growing in a pot.

When buying an already planted Christmas tree, keep in mind that in a cramped container, the roots of the plant form quite tightly. Having chosen a suitable tree, do not rush to pay. Ask the seller to take it out of the pot to show the root. There are unscrupulous traders who cut off the disturbing part and sell the plant. And what will happen to such a tree, we wrote above.

Decorative fir tree in a pot. Care and its features

On the eve of the New Year holidays, it's time to go for the symbol of the New Year. But what to do after the spruce is bought? The description of the tree will help you learn the features of growing and caring for this plant.

Conifers grow rather slowly, so they can be in a tub for several years. To do this, you need to properly contain spruce in a pot. How to care for such a plant is described below.

Spruce in a pot should be watered at least 3 times a week, best option- in one day. To do this, spend 2-3 liters of water. Carefully make sure that the earth in the pot does not dry out, and this may be if the air in the apartment is dry.

Remember that a decorative spruce in a pot cannot be more than two weeks in a heated room. Caring for her at room conditions is simple: regular watering and high humidity. After the New Year holidays, send the winter beauty to the balcony or other cool but well-lit place. A sharp temperature drop can harm the plant, so it must first be hardened. To do this, leave the tree for several nights in a room where about 7 degrees below zero. Insulate the pot to prevent the root system from freezing. Use hay, straw and other materials.

To improve the growth of the tree and its condition, transplant the plant every 2-3 years. Choose a pot a few centimeters wider than the previous one.

Spruce, like all plants, requires regular watering, which stops with the onset of real frosts. In the spring, it is recommended to fertilize the soil, and feed the tree with a complex that is brought along with water.

We carry out a forming pruning

This question arises for everyone who sets out to grow a spruce in a pot: “How to care for a plant so that it acquires a beautiful shape?” The answer is simpler than it seems. To get a lush tree of symmetrical shape, it is necessary to regularly carry out shaping pruning. This procedure is carried out in early spring in dry weather, when the plant has not yet entered the phase active growth. When pruning, stick to the natural shape of the crown and shorten only too long bare branches. Thus, branching will be stimulated, and you will get a beautiful lush tree. You need to cut the branch immediately after the joint, from which new branches will go.

Important! It is impossible to prune a weak or diseased tree, as after the procedure it may not recover and begin to dry. Shorten the branches only to the green needles, as the stiff part does not produce new shoots.

Transplanting a Christmas tree from a pot to the garden

After the tree has successfully wintered, it can be transplanted into the garden. Best time for transplantation - spring. To do this, prepare a hole that will be slightly larger than a pot. Before planting, you need to fertilize the ground, so put compost on the bottom. Remove the tree from the pot and plant it in the hole. Then water generously.

What can replace the tree?

In addition to Christmas trees, other conifers are also grown in pots: pine, fir, holly, sciadopitis and others. These trees reach small sizes, and grow very slowly, which is a good substitute if you are not satisfied with a decorative spruce in a pot. Caring for a pine or fir is the same as for a Christmas tree. The only difference is that pine can withstand quite severe frosts if the tree is first hardened.Glauca Globosa. The height does not exceed one and a half meters. The needles are bluish in color, frost-resistant and unpretentious.

Montgomery. The height of such a spruce is about two meters. It tolerates drought, frost and pruning well. Spruce has an unusual color. Blueish needles at the tips of the branches, more green - closer to the trunk.

many owners land plots dream of growing fluffy and beautiful. You can even decorate the site beautifully by growing a whole alley of fir trees. This is not the easiest task, it requires compliance with certain rules, as well as patience and time.

. Therefore, if you are wondering how to grow a spruce from a branch, first find a young and healthy spruce, no older than 8 years, from which you can take a branch. Cut them off from the top of the tree. You need to take only one-year-olds. Twigs from the middle of the tree also have a chance to take root, but it is likely that the tree will grow with a crooked crown.

Tricks of growing spruce from a branch:

  • Usually the branch takes root only in the second year. But if you want the roots to go already in the year of planting, prepare cuttings in the middle of spring.
  • Cut in autumn or winter, the so-called lignified cuttings are stored all winter in a cool, dark place.
  • The length of the branch can vary from 10 to 25 cm.
  • After the branch is cut, remove all the needles from the bottom by about 3-6 cm and put it in a weak solution of potassium permanganate.
  • In order for the stalk to give roots and take root well, it is necessary to do. Well, if it is heated.
  • You can easily make your own without help. Drainage must be placed at the bottom to avoid stagnant moisture. Stones can be used as drainage broken brick or large rubble. After drainage comes soil and a layer of sand on top, better cleaned. Soil can be taken in a spruce forest or purchased at a store.
  • We cover with a film so that there is a distance of no more than 30 cm between the sand and the film.
  • At first, spruce needed a shadow, so we put another dark coating on top of the film, you can use burlap.
  • You need to plant a branch to the depth to which you cleared it of needles.
  • They are planted at a slight angle with an interval of 2 m (if you are planning an alley).
  • Remember that spruce can grow very large, so do not mess with seedlings.

At first, it is necessary abundantly and every day, in the heat up to four times a day. Don't forget to loosen the soil as well. When the first roots appear, you do not need to water more than once a day. You can spray the seedlings with a mineral mixture. For the winter it is necessary to cover them or foliage.

Growing a beautiful Christmas tree from seeds is more difficult than from a branch, but with certain recommendations, you can very well boast that you succeeded. It is not recommended to buy seeds in a store or order online, because you do not know the quality of these seeds, how much and under what conditions they were stored.

Tips for growing spruce from seeds:

  • In November, choose any spruce you like: ask your neighbors for a bump, find a tree in a park or forest. The cone must be plucked from the tree, and not lifted from the ground. At home, these cones must be placed in a warm place, closer to a heater or radiator, and allowed to dry.
  • When the cone releases seeds, treat them (seeds, not cones) with a weak solution of potassium permanganate, and then put them in a box of calcined sand.
  • It is not necessary to dig deep, 1.5-2 cm will be enough. Put the box in the cold. It is these conditions that will be closest to natural.
  • Thus, the seeds, being at rest, will accumulate useful material and by spring they will be ready to ascend. In this form, the seeds should be left for 2-4 months.
  • Then the seeds will need to be put in a warm place and constantly so that they sprout. A large number of water will cause the seeds to rot, so watering should be moderate. At proper care after 2 weeks, the first shoots will appear.
  • Until the moment you plant a seedling, the soil must be fertilized twice. You need to water in such a way that the soil is moist, but the water does not stand on the surface.
  • When the night frosts are left behind, and it gets warmer outside, you can plant your spruce on the site. First, dig a hole and put mineral fertilizers there. There is no need to feed the spruce anymore.

At first, the seedling needs a greenhouse. To do this, cover it with a cropped plastic bottle. Do not clean such a homemade greenhouse for at least a week. But at the same time, it would be wrong to completely deprive the spruce of air flow. Therefore, periodically remove the bottle to ventilate the seedling and remove the accumulated condensate. Do this during warm weather.

Over the summer, your spruce will not grow and get strong enough to survive the winter frosts. For the winter, it needs to be covered or made a greenhouse. The layer of snow should be sufficient so that the seedling does not freeze.

And now some spruce care rules that will allow you to grow a beautiful, healthy and tall tree on your site.

Spruces may well grow in the shade, as is often the case in natural conditions.

But if you want to get a fluffy tree, and not a long and stunted one, it is still better to choose a sunny place where it is warm enough, humid and not strong wind. Then the tree will grow straight and strong. An abundance of bright light is also not desirable.

Proper tree care:

  1. Spruce loves moisture. It does not tolerate drought well, but it can rot from stagnant water. Therefore, the earth sometimes needs to be loosened, providing water and air access to the roots. It is not often necessary to water an adult spruce, once a week is enough, but at the same time it is necessary to pour at least 10 liters of water. It is this amount that is considered optimal in order to nourish the roots and prevent moisture stagnation.
  2. Requirements for air humidity are low. Humidity tolerates calmly, as well as more arid conditions. To wash the dust and dirt, you can periodically wash the spruce with a hose. Then the needles will acquire a rich green color.
  3. If for the first time you made a mistake with the place, spruce can be transplanted. It will tolerate the transplant well in the absence of bright sun and all conditions are met. But often transplanting spruce is not recommended. To do this, dig a hole in advance in the desired part of the garden, repeat the whole procedure from the beginning: lay drainage, pour soil specially selected for conifers, sand on top. Please note that the basal neck should be above the ground. This is an important condition for healthy tree growth.
  4. Do not often need tree fertilizers. Spruce does not need this at all. If you wish, you can fertilize the soil near the trunk in the spring before the shoots appear.
  5. Reproduction of firs is also carried out through or. If you have a special type of ornamental spruce, prefer the type of propagation by cuttings, then you can save everything decorative properties ate.
  6. Spruce does not like dense soil, so you need to loosen near the trunk. Loosen with a chopper or hoe very carefully. No need to dig deep, you risk damaging the roots.
  7. Follow appearance ate. Remove dried branches in time. If the tree begins to split in two, remove one top.

Spruce has many varieties: they differ not only in appearance, but also in the color of the needles. Consider the most common among them:

  • Ordinary. In other words, this is our usual Russian Christmas tree, green, tall, similar to a cone. The height can be very impressive, up to 50 m. It tolerates frost, shade well and is generally unpretentious in care. Lives for more than one hundred years, reaching the highest point of growth by 150 years.
  • Canadian. Beautiful spruce with a bluish tint. The height of an adult tree is 10 m. The needles are short, have a slight smell of blackcurrant. He loves the light, but is quite capable of enduring the shadow, as well as severe frosts. The trunk reaches a thickness of 4 m. It does not like high humidity, but it will survive the drought.
  • Acrocon. A species of common spruce. An excellent choice for those who are looking for interesting decoration for your area. These are small trees, usually no more than 4 m high, growing in irregular bushes. The needles seem to be pointing down. A special highlight is the multi-colored needles. At first it is bright green, and then it becomes very dark. The combination of both colors creates a very beautiful composition. The buds appear all over the tree, turning bright burgundy by spring.
  • Inverse. The crown of this spruce resembles a weeping willow. All branches are directed downwards and seem to flow around the trunk. Height is about 6 meters. Its crown can be directed, then the tree will grow in a given direction. If you do not create any support for the trunk, the spruce will not grow at all above the level of the knee, it will spread along the ground.
  • Serbian. This ornamental spruce is one of the most slender. It grows rapidly, reaches a height of 15 m. It tolerates frost well, but not an abundance of moisture in the soil. The needles are bright green, brightens towards the bottom of the trunk. Decorations are cones purple hue. It is almost impossible to meet Serbian spruce in the wild. It is easy to cut, in strong winds the tree can fall, as the roots go shallow into the ground. In Europe, this spruce is very much loved and often used as a traditional Christmas decoration.
  • Nana. This is one of the varieties of Serbian spruce. Low tree up to 3 m in height with bluish needles. It is undemanding in leaving, well transfers frosts and looks very beautifully. But it grows slowly, no more than 3 cm per year.

It has long been known that the needles contain a huge amount of vitamins, minerals, essential oils. Therefore, winter needles are often used to make homemade cosmetics. It is in winter that it absorbs all the useful substances. Masks, lotions are made from it, coniferous baths are taken, which is very beneficial for the skin and blood circulation in general.

Spruce needles are crushed, poured with boiling water and then used to make face and hair masks, creams, lotions, tonics.

It is also useful to drink such an infusion. It has a diuretic effect, removes small stones from the kidneys and urinary tract. Almost any part of spruce (cones, buds, branches, needles) can be used in the treatment of rhinitis and colds. Inhalations with a decoction of pine needles destroy microbes, facilitate breathing, relieve inflammation. Healing spruce resin ointment will help get rid of boils. Resin and wax can also be inhaled. It is very useful in bronchial diseases. They are cleaned, sputum is removed, inflammation is removed.

An infusion of cones is very useful for external and internal use. For this you need:

  • Select good cones, grind, pour water and boil for at least half an hour.
  • Then let it brew under the lid. The infusion is dark brown, the taste is not very pleasant, astringent. It can be used for inhalation.
  • If you add lemon during boiling, this decoction can be taken orally to strengthen the immune system.
  • The broth is stored in a cool no more than 3 days.

You can also take spruce branches along with young buds, pour boiling water and let it brew. If you regularly take such an infusion, you can get rid of bronchitis, sciatica, speed up recovery from pneumonia.

It is not necessary to make infusions or decoctions, you can take a few needles, rinse with water and just chew.

In addition to the pleasant coniferous smell from the mouth, vivacity will appear, immunity will be strengthened, and working capacity will increase. Remember that with peptic ulcers of the digestive system, such home remedies are prohibited. Before use, it is recommended to consult a doctor.

Unforgivable Movie Mistakes You Probably Never Noticed There are probably very few people who don't like watching movies. However, even in the best cinema there are errors that the viewer can notice.

For the sake of greater environmental friendliness and practicality, I want to buy a Christmas tree in a pot - and after the holidays give it a chance in the wild, in the country or on the balcony. It seems - alive, with roots, small, grow more and grow ... And in general, why not get yourself a completely indoor Christmas tree? How convenient it would be.

But alas, conifers do not live in captivity. And even the chances to take root in open field such a Christmas tree is not very large. Basically, potted Christmas trees are also designed for temporary use - they just have a root system, which means they will last a little longer in a living space, in stressful conditions, before withering.
Although miracles do happen. How to help it happen?

To begin with, determine whether you really bought a Christmas tree, from all types of the New Year's assortment of conifers (this may turn out to be, for example, pine), and if the Christmas tree, then whose?

It can be, for example, common spruce (Picea abies); prickly spruce "Colorado" (Picea pungens var. glauca "Blue Colorado spruce"); gray spruce "Conica" (Picea glauca "Conica"); Serbian spruce (Picea omorica)…

Picea pungens var. glauca "Blue Colorado spruce" photo: Anna M. Stevenson

As well as pine or fir. (If “Canadian” is written on the pot, this does not necessarily mean that the spruce comes from Canada - it means that the spruce is blue. One cannot do without comparisons of names in reference books ...)

The main suppliers of potted Christmas trees for the holiday are Denmark, Holland, Poland, the Baltic countries, Sweden and Finland. There are practically no Russian nurseries.

photo:

Winter hardiness depends on where the trees were bred. Domestic varieties take root much better in our conditions, northern varieties are more resistant than German or Dutch ones. The fir trees and spruces brought from Denmark and Holland on the site, most likely, will not survive in the cold.

As a general rule, the frost resistance of a potted Christmas tree should be 1-2 zones higher than your region.

If the Christmas tree (pine, fir) bought for the holiday is theoretically suitable for our conditions, you can try to give it a chance. And if the tree survives until spring, transplant into the ground.

Herringbone does not adapt well and survives in rooms. In winter, conifers have a dormant period, hibernation, they need fresh, moist air and cold. If the Christmas tree wakes up ahead of time and gives shoots or cones, it means that spring has come in the middle of winter, which requires appropriate lighting, and it will already die on the street in frost. If at home it is too hot and dry for her, it is also bad, the needles will begin to crumble and dry.

In a heated room, any tree without harm to its health can be no longer than two weeks. It is necessary to install it away from batteries and heating devices, in a lit place.

Since Christmas trees need moist air, it’s good to place an air humidifier nearby or at least put a wide vessel with water that would evaporate. The Christmas tree also needs regular spraying and moderate watering, avoiding either waterlogging or drying out of the soil. Water for irrigation and spraying is better to take settled, room temperature. No need to water the Christmas tree with fertilizer until spring.

You can, of course, try to plant it on the site in the winter, on one of the more or less warm days. However, winter planting of Christmas trees is not the easiest option (it would be easier to either plant a Christmas tree in early spring, growing it until the next New Year, or contact a company that deals with winter planting of large trees).
At the end of the holidays, the Christmas tree is supposed to be sent for wintering in a cool place. A large tub Christmas tree can be prepared for wintering by "reverse acclimatization" in a cold room - an abrupt change temperature regime stress for them. The Christmas tree is taught back to “wildness” gradually, having arranged for it to acclimatize in an intermediate room.

For wintering spruce and Christmas trees, a glazed balcony is suitable - with a temperature not higher than 10-15 degrees. Before you move it to the cold, moisten the ground well (without flooding). Watering in early January must be reduced (especially during periods of severe frost), but the earthen clod must not be completely dry. On the balcony, continue to spray the needles from time to time, maintaining the humidity of the air.
In addition to moisture, the Christmas tree will need light - however, not direct sunlight to avoid needle burns (this danger is especially relevant in spring). (Yes, there are a lot of round dances with Christmas trees ...)

If there is no balcony, some flower growers manage with a cold window sill (with a constantly ajar window with a micro-opener, for example) - but this does not always work, due to the batteries located just under the window sill. Others take out the Christmas tree on a cooler window sill in the entrance. (And some inventors even overexpose the plant for a while in the refrigerator!)

It is better to put the plant not on the south window, but on the north - all because of the same direct sun. The side of the Christmas tree on the windowsill facing the room may begin to turn yellow and dry - from time to time turn the Christmas tree on different sides to the light source.

Despite the fact that the roots of the Christmas tree are considered among the most frost-resistant, the Christmas tree pot must be insulated to prevent it from freezing.

Already in early spring, a Christmas tree from a pot can be transplanted to permanent place. When choosing a place, keep in mind that it should be shaded, and also that coniferous trees annually gain 20-30 cm in height. And if the Christmas tree takes root, then over time it will grow into a large spruce.

F.D. Richards

A pit is prepared, larger in diameter than a clod of earth, by 20-30 cm, the walls of the pit are sheer. The composition of the earth mixture for the Christmas tree: two parts of sod land and one part of peat and sand. When planting a plant, pay attention that the root neck does not deepen, is at ground level. Water the tree thoroughly after planting. A stressed and transplanted plant takes root better if you treat it with a stimulant solution, for example, Epin, Zircon or Radipharm. In the first year, the Christmas tree will require regular watering and sprinkling of the crown.
But about whether the Christmas tree has finally taken root - you will find out for three whole years - they do it slowly.

I am disabled, and I would like to grow in an apartment and always have my Christmas tree in a pot for the New Year. I bought Christmas trees with a clod of earth several times; how long they were in this state is unknown (although the sellers say: "Just dug, plant in a pot, and it will grow"). But after planting, the Christmas trees after a while, without turning yellow, crumbled. I live in an apartment (in Nevinnomyssk, Stavropol Territory), with a balcony on the north side. In addition to the Christmas tree, which of the coniferous plants would you recommend purchasing to grow in these conditions? And it’s a pity to watch every time a tree dies ...

First of all, I want to say that the Christmas tree generally does not adapt well and grows indoors, it is better to plant it in the courtyard of the house or in the garden. Coniferous plants of temperate latitudes are not suitable for indoor use (they do not live in a room for a long time); most often used for this southern species of conifers.

For room conditions only a few species of conifers are suitable; more often, more hardy cypress, cypress, thuja, cryptomeria, and araucaria are grown. For the north side of the coniferous plants I have listed, suitable for a room, cypress, cypress and thuja are more suitable, then araucaria comes according to the need for lighting, but do not buy cryptomeria - this breed is very light-loving, and it will be dark on your north side.
In December, they begin to sell "holiday" conifers, in which the branches are sprinkled with sparkles and artificial "snow" - do not buy them in any case, they will definitely dry up shortly after the New Year - these plants that people mocked, not tenants ...

If the plant is sold with a clod of earth, then it is considered that this is an open root system! This package is only suitable for planting in the garden. Buy conifers for the house only in a pot!
Coniferous plants in the room are a source of health and positive emotions: they have decorative and fragrant greens, which has antibiotic properties and purifies the air of the room; they can be decorated New Year little toys.
If you want to grow a Christmas tree in a room, then you need to provide it with as cool light conditions as possible, fresh moist air, proper watering and spraying. I repeat once again: be sure to buy a Christmas tree with a closed root system, that is, already growing in a container, as this plant is very painful to transplant and may die at the very beginning precisely because of the transplant!

It is better to keep the Christmas tree not in the back of the room, but on a bright, cool glazed balcony with a temperature of + 6- + 10 degrees. When in winter, in frosts, the temperature on the loggia drops and stays near zero, you need to make sure that the ground in the container does not freeze. In the absence of a glazed balcony, you can put the Christmas tree on a bright, cold window sill, close to the glass, periodically turning the pot slightly relative to the glass to evenly illuminate and cool the entire crown so that the needles do not crumble.

Next to the Christmas tree standing in the room, place wide vessels filled with water, from which there is a constant evaporation of moisture; ideally, if the electric humidifier is periodically turned on. If a heating battery is working in the room, then the plant must be protected from the flow warm air, provide the Christmas tree with regular watering, spraying and airing.
The water used for watering and spraying the Christmas tree must be defended and softened (if you live in an ecologically clean place, you can take melted snow water or melted ice). The temperature of the water used should be at room temperature. The Christmas tree is watered as the earth dries up in the container, ensuring a uniform moderate moisture content of the substrate. It is important to get used to watering the Christmas tree and prevent the soil from drying out or excessive waterlogging so that the small suction roots do not suffer from the plant.

If the listed conditions for keeping the Christmas tree are unfavorable, its needles will begin to turn yellow and fall off, which is an alarming sign. It is impossible to restore fallen needles on the branches of a Christmas tree, since new needles will grow only at the ends of bare branches.
In the spring, you need to shade the Christmas tree from the bright and hotter sun every day, otherwise the plant will get sunburn. If desired, you can plant a winter-hardy species in the garden at the end of spring frosts, choosing for it a place protected from the midday sun with moist, dense soil. It is important not to bury the plant when planting - the soil level in the pot and in the garden must exactly match.
