I began to find out what was wrong - it turned out that the door trim fits tightly to the plane of the midbass head.

The right sound requires the right components. But not everyone is a champion... All other components for this system are DR.

The soul of a three-way is the midrange, and Eton has quite a lot of them for such a specific type of emitter. The final choice was not immediately, by the way, the 8-centimeter diffuser Eton MAS Subwoofer - Eton HEX. A distinctive feature of all dynamic heads, from tweeters to subwoofers, is the diffuser material. Or rather, two materials, one of which in each head has characteristics optimized for its frequency range and requirements.

The first material is found in the tweeter domes. Eton MGS CX has Keronit - magnesium-based metal ceramics, and the proportion of ceramics in this material is really high, it is not just a deeply oxidized alloy.

A dome made using this technology naturally turns out to be light magnesium, it will, you know, be covered with aluminum, a rigid dome and with a hard surface. The dome with a diameter of 28 mm is mounted on a fabric suspension, in front of it is a phase-equalizing ring, which also performs protective functions.

However, the dimensions of the tweeter, the rectangular flange and the radiator on the side of the magnetic system in any case require a non-trivial approach to installation. All diffuser heads of the system use Hexacone technology. Therefore, we take the power wire AIV and Stinger, and stretch it in a corrugated line along the left threshold from the fuse to the distributor. Make the piece of wire from the fuse to the battery terminal - the weak point not protected by the fuse - as short as possible.

I take the mixture from the rear seat mounting bolt, sanding its thread and the surface under the washer with a metal brush. Wires for 2 amplifiers need 7 meters. It's not copper - it's an alloy. Don't want to pay R per meter of cable? All door trims, as well as sills, trunk trim can be easily removed plastic tools for removing casings.

You shouldn’t be afraid or worry about assembly and disassembly, the main thing is not to rush.

We glue the doors with vibrato according to a scheme known to everyone. We remove the columns, cut them out with a sharp knife, and bite them off with wire cutters. internal fastenings- voila, the podiums are ready. Actually, the speakers should not be in a tree, but I took the simplified path, unfortunately, I don’t have much time. The rings should be 35mm high and wide enough to cover the standard mounting holes. That's it, the speakers are assembled and are waiting for their installation.

I put a plywood spacer under the DLS and sealed the joints with the foam casing, turned on the radio and still the original speakers sound better, subjectively there are more low and mid frequencies from the unopened right door with the original speakers. In short, I put back the original acoustics and added tweeters with filters from DLS B6A T20 in the standard place; I didn’t have tweeters-squeakers in the sports package, the wiring for the squeakers was already there from the factory.

High frequencies began to sound normal. The disassembly procedure for the driver's door is as follows: Open the hatch lid at the top right in the recess of the door-opening lever.

Remove the triangle of the mirror - pull the top edge towards you away from the door, attach the triangle with a piston in the middle and a protrusion at the bottom. The knife, you can wrap it in electrical tape and use a flat screwdriver to help insert it at the bottom from the left edge, or from the right.

The first is the type of car. Automakers have shamelessly removed the word “crossover” from our vocabulary and now use it as their own. And as soon as we hear it, it immediately brings us back. The second is the name itself: Kia Sportage. They called it that for the sake of beauty; in its original form, this car is not supposed to think about any sport. But if you work with her for a while, she becomes athletic. Quite sporty. Champion...

The owner of the car, Oleg Kuznetsov, chose it with an eye to participating in sporting events. The type of sport is car audio... And here there is its own hierarchy: in this form, the glory of the Southern Urals has been brought to the Southern Urals for many years by a man with a rare name and surname in our country - Dmitry Golubev. However, not everyone calls him by his passport; most call him by his professional pseudonym DR.DIGO. A professional with many years of experience and a regular winner of car audio competitions hardly needs a formal introduction: regular readers of the magazine are already very familiar with this name, others can experience the effectiveness of the search engine on the magazine’s website - rich results are guaranteed. The cars prepared by the Doctor always took prizes, and he was not going to make this project an exception.

The right sound requires the right components. The Alpine DVI-9990R signal source and the Alpine PXI-H990 processor from the legendary F#1Status line were not chosen by chance: exceptional sound quality is combined here with multimedia capabilities, so the vector for further development emerges - install a monitor and also perform in the multimedia class, preferably with results familiar to the work of this studio.

The direction of the tweeter axes is also not quite “like everyone else”. But not everyone is a champion...

All other components for this DR system. I decided to take one manufacturer - Eton. The front, of course, is three-way, it is based on a two-way set of the top-end Eton MGS 180/MGS CX 290. The soul of a three-way is the midrange, and Eton has quite a lot of them (for such a specific type of emitter). The final choice (not immediately, by the way) was the 8-centimeter diffuser Eton MAS 80. Subwoofer - Eton 12-630 HEX. Directional characteristics are optimized for an angle of about 30 degrees, more convenient and versatile than a head-on installation. However, the dimensions of the tweeter, the rectangular flange and the radiator on the side of the magnetic system in any case require a non-trivial approach to installation.

All diffuser heads of the system use Hexacone technology. This means: a three-layer sandwich construction made of two layers of Kevlar and honeycomb filler made of Nomex material is another type of aramid, also favored where extreme mass efficiency is needed. In aviation, for example, where else can you get such materials?..

In the components of this system, Hexacon is used even in the mid-range speaker, on which timbral accuracy largely depends. The sandwich here is the thinnest and lightest. And I liked the sound of the system with it more than with the magnesium Eton 3-400/a8/25/mg, which was tested in the same role. Magnesium, they decided, was enough, the rest would be composite, fortunately the supply met the demand: the German manufacturer used thicker and stiffer Hexacone for midbass, and a very heavy and extremely rigid one for the subwoofer diffuser.

The amplification part is made according to the principle “each band has its own amplifier”. All amplifiers are the same, two-channel Eton PA-560.2 - by the way, they were recently tested in our test (“AZ” No. 7/2014). The amplifier output stage operates in class AB, and we noted then low level distortion at the “first watt”, which is extremely important for the microdynamics of the system. Maximum power at the same time, it is also rather big: 120 W at 4 Ohms and 220 W at 2 Ohms, this is based on measurement results and is rounded.

Once all the components were assembled, the installation process began. Where does car audio begin? Of course, in terms of sound insulation, the interior of the car was disassembled and completely treated with StP material. At the same time, Tchernov Cable wiring was laid and attached to self-adhesive pads. 2AWG Power Wiring, Classic Series Speaker and Signal Cables. All wires are laid in snakeskin tubing according to color scheme, marked with colored heat-shrinkable tube - as required by the rules. You can make fun of the adherence of car audio athletes to strict rules for arranging cable networks in cars; in the albums of participants, dozens of pages with photographs are sometimes devoted to this, but one cannot but agree: it disciplines and, more importantly, allows you to no longer think about wires, focusing on the creative aspects.

Midrange in glass - a once popular design, today it is much less common

Tweeters are on stands, but searches correct angle installations took a lot of time. The tweeters themselves have been slightly modernized - the phase-aligning rings, originally black, have been repainted in a general light tone.

The midrange drivers are in the upper part of the dashboard and work with reflection from the glass. In order to carve out the volume necessary for their work, the air ducts had to be modified and relocated.

The midbass is installed without major alterations - in a standard place with a transition podium. The door trims were not redrawn, only the standard plastic grilles were replaced with grilles from the midbass kit and reupholstered in leather general style salon

For the Eton 12-630 HEX subwoofer, the optimal volume (according to already accumulated statistics) is about 30 liters. Made using composite technology from plywood and fiberglass, the stealth subwoofer fit perfectly into the right rear fender, but... there was not enough volume. It was then that the box acquired an “appendix” in the lower part - it goes under the raised floor, does not interfere with anything, and brings the displacement to the desired size. There, under the raised floor, amplifiers and a processor are installed on the mounting panel. All components are reliably protected, the functionality of the trunk is preserved.

The sound of the tuned system is how the project ends; it begins, if you remember, with vibration isolation. The sports protocols testify to what the final outcome of the project was.

I installed the new speaker in place of the old one using the factory brackets. In fact, this is one of the weirdest speaker montages I've ever done. Using a knife or a watch screwdriver, remove the diffuser by prying it off the edge.

Next, I removed the factory connector on the bracket by cutting it off. I drilled a hole in the bracket to route the wires in and clamped the quick connects on the new speaker. I drilled a second hole to also run the tweeter wires through.

I found that the speakers didn't sit perfectly flat on the bracket, so I put double-sided foam tape around the mounting areas and used some caulk.

Once everything is ready, install the speaker, connect the wires and secure it with screws.

I didn't take any photos of the tweeter. I completely removed the factory tweeter by removing the bracket secured with two Phillips screws and the connector. I cut off the connector because I won't be using it again. I flush mounted the new tweeters in the top corner of the door. If necessary, use a search engine to find further instructions regarding correct installation HF dynamics.

It is known that for a speaker in a car door to work properly, its installation must be preceded by the process of vibration isolation of the door.

The photographs show the following processes:

With the standard Kia Sportage subwoofer, you can test your hearing, using it as an acoustic background: whether you hear it or not is not very important, what is more important is whether you understand sounds that are different from the background that this device creates. So our customer was convinced that the standard subwoofer was simply faulty, because... nothing but a quiet hum was heard from it, and this despite the fact that at half the volume new system, the owner of the car said: enough, I don’t listen so loudly.

Despite the complete unsuitability of the standard subwoofer, its physical performance turned out to be impressive: a 1 mm thick plastic case + a full-fledged 8-inch subwoofer head. Having carefully examined the case and speaker, we came to the conclusion that this does not correspond to the technical specifications for the new audio system; the customer asked to create soft, clean and even bass to enjoy live music, which is impossible when the plastic case plays, and not the speaker - after all, the speaker turned out to be 5 times heavier than the body itself, and the body was attached to the body with three screws.

To operate the new subwoofer head, we made a new, heavy and sealed housing from 20 mm plywood and composite materials, and securely secured it in its original location.

The owner immediately approved the Morel Primo 804 subwoofer; he really liked the sound of the word Morel with the emphasis on the first vowel. We needed to choose a speaker that, with a relatively small input power, could sound decent in a 13-liter case and have a shallow seating depth with affordable price.

The main advantage of the installation shown is the installation of a new speaker and housing while fully preserving the standard lining of the luggage compartment and the possibility of returning standard devices back.

The subwoofer diffuser is protected by a proprietary Morel steel grille.
