Do-it-yourself wooden vise at home. Vise: do it yourself - options and varieties, schemes, implementation. Classic Homemade Vise

Hi all! Every carpenter should have at hand the means to firmly secure his workpiece or part. A wooden bench vise is perfect for this purpose. Look at my version of this vise that I made do it yourself plywood and metal.

For this project, I used all the tools I have (from a nailer to a welding machine). That's why I don't bring full list tools used. Use the tools that you have. Be creative!

Step 1: Materials Used

First, I cut the plywood to the required size. One blank was 2 cm thick, and the second 3 cm.
After that, I cut two strips of oak 1 cm thick. These should be glued and nailed to the top edge of the sponges, providing them with stability and better appearance. Then cut flush and sand.

I attached a 2 cm plywood blank to the table with a pair of furniture bolts.

Step 2: Device Mechanism

Let's move on to the mechanism itself.

At a local metal shop, I purchased a metal rod with a diameter of 2 cm and a rod with an M 27 thread, as well as a couple of washers and nuts. In addition, I purchased a flat blank 4 mm thick and 6 cm wide. These are all the metal components that we will need.

Take wooden oak blocks and use them as guides. For the threaded rod, I welded two nuts to a flat piece and attached it under the table with screws (see photo).

On the outer sponge, I decided to add the flat blank I mentioned earlier. This will provide additional stability for the entire structure.

It is very important that all the elements are on the same line, otherwise the vise will not work.

I also welded a washer to the threaded rod. This is necessary so that the outer jaw also moves when the rod is rotated. Without this, the sponge will stay in place and only be moved by hand.

Step 3: Lathe

For the rotating head, I glued several blanks of cherry and oak. Then on lathe given the desired shape. The result obtained was quite acceptable. Next, using a chisel, I made a recess for the nut. On a drilling machine, I drilled through a hole with a diameter of 2 cm for the handle. The hole is slightly angled...

The handle is a spruce pin with caps on the ends made of cherry, which prevent the handle from falling out. Treat the handle with drying oil.

Also on the outer sponge, I drilled holes 3 cm deep for stops on carpentry workbench. That's why I used 3cm thick plywood for the outer sponge. But a single row of stops on a carpenter's workbench won't do any good, so we still need to add other holes on this table. I'll do it when I get to final stage. I just have to consider the mechanical part from below.

Step 4: Finish

If you decide to equip your own workshop, workbench or desktop, you may definitely need homemade vise. This is a relatively simple matter, and a workbench or workshop made will serve you. long time. You should study in more detail the question of how to make a bench vise with your own hands and what nuances accompany this process.

Twin screw joiner

If you are looking for a bench vise that is really powerful, then your best bet is twin-screw modification of said device. M20 towbar bolts give several tons of force, which is an excellent option for such a vise. The order of assembly of such a device is as follows:

  • We prepare everything necessary tools;
  • We make appropriate cuts and holes;
  • We insert bolts and turns;
  • We check the vise for strength and performance.

Step by step and detailed briefing for assembly and self-creation of vise for the workshop and workbench are available on specialized resources and forums in the form of photos and recommendations.

Very handy for ready-made desktops make a mini moxon vise. To get started you will need the following materials and tools:

After the workpiece has been cut, it is necessary to grind the edges with sandpaper. We round the edges of the wheels with a drill and all the same sandpaper. To make screws, you need to purchase a long threaded rod and cut metal blanks into two parts.

After that, you need to insert the nuts into the holes. Glue the skin on the clamps and remove all unnecessary. Surface protection is provided by tung oil. It, unlike other wood impregnation agents, polymerizes inside and outside the tree with rapid penetration into the lower layers. After the oil dries, it remains to connect all the resulting parts together - and the vise will be ready for use.

They are also easy to make by hand.. First you need to cut the plywood to size. Weld two nuts to the flat panel for the threaded guide and attach under the table with screws, as this will add stability to the structure in question. It is very important to correctly align everything, otherwise it will not work.

After that, it is necessary to make a notch for the nut with a chisel. On the outer lock, drill a hole 3 cm deep. Therefore, the thickness of the plywood should be 3 cm.

It is a copy of the usual vise, only made of wood. From metal parts, only a screw 45 cm long and 8 cm thick should be used here. Massed pine plywood, well dried, is suitable.

The vise jaws are made from separate blocks, which are subsequently glued together. To give them their final shape, sand their edges with sandpaper. In this case, for one block, it is worth choosing a thicker tree. This compensates for the space between the moving and fixed parts. The handle through the head should pass into the hole freely, then add the knob and anvil. When finished, remove the fixing screws, coat the vise elements with two coats of polyurethane oil and leave to dry overnight. Bolt the vise to the work table.

oak vise

The design of this structure is based on old drawings., the body is made of oak sleepers. Sponges can be cut by hand or with a saw. Grooves are punched down on both sides of the base. The brackets add strength to the rear lip and secure it well to the base.

The top of the tee is on top of the clamp bolt. You will also need a large bolt and a square head that fits into a groove in the body at the base of the vise. A steel strip should be added to each side of the base at the bottom to protect the side brackets from wear.

Make homemade vise As you can see, it turns out that it is not so difficult. There are many sites and articles on the Internet that talk in detail about the manufacture of devices for various workbenches and desktops. The manufacture of oak vise is very interesting, since massive pine plywood is ideal for them. A good addition is the steel strip, as it prevents wear on the brackets and vise in general. Good luck and making homemade workbenches!

Making comfortable and high-quality homemade vise is quite simple. Even easier than knitting. They may be needed in cases where it is necessary to securely fix a part or product. An additional advantage of such vices is their low cost to manufacture, since not everyone can afford to purchase a serial model.

Factory vise models are made universal, so they cannot always fix absolutely any detail well. And also they have a large mass and dimensions. Do-it-yourself vices can be made the most convenient for performing a certain type of work. This will help increase labor efficiency and reduce time costs.

Any craftsman who is constantly working in his workshop knows that it is hard to do without such a tool as a good vise. Such a clamping device helps to perform various operations with wood, plastic and metal products. The use of a vise can guarantee efficiency and good accuracy when performing various kinds works. It will also ensure human safety. When you can't buy factory model such a device, it is quite simple to make it yourself. This operation will take little time and effort.

Homemade vise is usually divided into the following types:

  1. Locksmiths;
  2. Carpentry.

Drilling machine manufacturing

Necessary materials

Homemade vise for drilling machine making it at home is pretty easy. They do not need complex calculations and design developments. On the net you can find a lot of high-quality drawings of a bench vise. A very simple, but high-quality design is made using iron pipes or a channel.

To assemble a bench vise with your own hands, you will need the following materials:

  1. A small iron pipe that will serve as the internal moving part of the device;
  2. A smaller iron pipe that will act as an external fixed part;
  3. Large nut size M16;
  4. Large screw size M16;
  5. A special knob through which the rotation will be transmitted to the screw;
  6. Two metal supports that will fix the fixed part on the frame;
  7. Two pieces of a metal rectangular profile that will serve as vise jaws;
  8. Several lock nuts size M16.

Locksmith vice

Collect such homemade design it is necessary to start with the fact that a flange is attached to the edge of the end of a large metal pipe, which will be the fixed unit of the device, using a manual welding machine. Weld a nut M16 in the center of the flange. Next, to the end iron pipe smaller size, it is necessary to weld another flange and pass it through lead screw.

Another nut must be welded to the edge of the screw, which will be a fixing element. The end of the screw to which the nut is attached must be passed through a small diameter pipe, and then inserted into through hole flange. It is worth remembering that the nut must be screwed to the flange from the inside.

On the lead screw, which is located outside the flange, it is necessary to put on the washer and screw on the nut. Further, it is securely welded to the screw. Another washer should be installed between the surface of the metal flange and the nut. This will help reduce the friction force between them. At this stage of work, you must be very careful and avoid mistakes.

After assembling the movable assembly of the device, you need to insert it into metal pipe bigger size and screw the other end of the screw into the other flange. In order to attach a knob to a screw that protrudes slightly from a smaller pipe, it is worth welding a nut or front sight to it. In its through hole and you need to skip the collar.

Good clamping jaws are worth making from small rectangular pipes. They need to be fixed to the fixed and moving parts of the device. To make the vise much more stable, several supports must be welded to the bottom of the fixed iron pipe. Their role can be played by rectangular pipes and pieces of corners.

A small pipe can also rotate when the lead screw is rotated. This makes the application of such a design very problematic. To avoid this, it is worth making a small slot on top of the fixed pipe, and screw the lock into the moving part. This screw must move in the slot, preventing rotation of the small pipe.

carpentry tool

Many people quite often have to process wooden parts. This processing is usually associated with assembly different designs from wood or their repair. It is very inconvenient to do such work using factory devices with iron clamping jaws. And also it can lead to damage to the wooden product, the occurrence of cracks or dents. For this reason, it is better to use homemade vise for wood parts. It doesn't take much time or effort to assemble them.

To assemble a carpentry vice with your own hands, you need to find the following materials:

A bed of a similar cross design, on which metal guides are fixed, is fixed on working surface workbench using bolts or self-tapping screws. In the movable vice jaw and in the body you need. They are necessary for the screw and two metal guides. These through holes should be drilled simultaneously in both bars so that they are at the same level relative to each other.

Further, the guides are fixed in the body of the machine tool, and a movable sponge is put on them. It is necessary to insert a lead screw into the central through hole of two corner bars, onto which a nut is screwed from the back of the housing. On the other end of the screw, which extends beyond the front of the moving part, you must also screw and weld a lock nut. To attach a knob to the screw, it is worth drilling a through hole of the same diameter in it. Next, another nut is welded to the collar.

Such carpentry mini-vises work very simply. Rotating, the lead screw is twisted into a metal nut, which is welded to reverse side product body. Thus, the movable sponge is attracted to the fixed part. Their principle of operation is very similar to a jack.

Many plumbing jobs require special vices. Their purpose is to rigidly fix the workpiece being processed. There are quite a few on sale a large number of various options execution of locksmith machines, all of them are united by a rather high cost. For a private workshop, you can make a metalwork vice with your own hands. The created design will cost much less and at the same time is ideal for installation in a private workshop.

Vise Features

Do-it-yourself strong vise at home can be made from profile pipe. The resulting design will have a compact size, can be rigidly attached to the base. Similar vices are used to work with various workpieces, since the device can exert different pressure on the jaws.

Step-by-step instruction

Relatively few tools are required for the job. The entire manufacturing process can be divided into several main stages:

After the structure has been assembled, it is painted. As a rule, the angle used is made using ordinary steel, which corrodes during long-term operation. The created vise can be bolted to the base.

Universal design for domestic use

Homemade vise for a drilling machine or workbench does not require complex calculations. As a rule, a steel pipe is used as the basis in most cases.

When considering how to make a homemade vice, attention should be paid to the design features:

Such a design can withstand significant impact and last for a long period.

Do-it-yourself work

To work with metal, you need a grinder and welding machine. Machine milling vice of this type is made as follows:

The created vise design is characterized by high reliability and long term operation. However, it is easy to repair and inexpensive. That is why it is quite popular among home craftsmen.

Making a carpenter's vice

For processing wooden blanks, a carpenter's vice is required. They are used both in the manufacture of new parts and in the repair of existing ones. It is inconvenient to work with wood when using a bench vise. That is why many people decide to make joinery, which have a number of their own characteristics.

The simplest design is represented by a combination of the following elements:

Manufacturing features include the following:

In this way, a very practical carpenter's vice can be made. They will cost inexpensively, can be used for most carpentry work.

Homemade designs are in no way inferior to industrial ones. They can also be designed to withstand heavy loads. The vise created can have a variety of qualities, as they are created by the master, depending on the needs.

If necessary, making a suitable vice with your own hands is easy. It's not only that the tools offered by manufacturers are expensive, bulky and heavy: they often do not meet the needs home master. This is especially true when you need high accuracy of parts, strict parallelism or perpendicularity of their surfaces, the ability to easily move the vise from one place to another, etc.

Figure 1. Locksmith vice V. Legostaev.

Precise drilling of holes, high-quality processing of workpieces, holding them with hands or pliers, is very difficult, and often simply impossible. Need a vise. Convenient operation with wooden products, woodcarving is impossible without a carpenter's vice. Both of them do not have to be bought in a store - if you have the appropriate skills, it is not difficult to make them yourself.

Homemade locksmith vice

This simple, light, but at the same time very effective design was developed by the famous home craftsman V. Legostaev. The operation of the proposed model is based on the fact that water and gas pipes are produced in such a way that a sample of a given diameter fits snugly into the product of the next size.

On fig. 1 shows its device. Individual elements structures are indicated there by the following numbers:

  1. The inner (moving) part of the vise is a piece of a water pipe.
  2. The outer (fixed) part of the vise is a piece of pipe of the next size.
  3. Lead nut (M16).
  4. Lead screw (M16).
  5. Vorotok.
  6. Front support.
  7. Back support.
  8. Clamping jaws - pieces of a rectangular pipe.
  9. Fixing nut (M16).

A flange with a nut having an M16 thread (3) is welded to the end of the pipe section (2), which is the outer, fixed part of the vise. The same flange with a larger nut (M18) is welded to the end of the pipe section (1), which is the inner (moving) part of the vise. This nut is inner surface flange serves as a kind of bearing for the stud (4) with M16 thread.

Elements of the design of a vise made of metal.

A fixing nut (9) is screwed onto the left end of the threaded stud and fixed in this position by welding. Washers are installed between these nuts and the flange to reduce friction. The right, long end of the stud is screwed into the nut of the large (outer) pipe. A thick washer or nut of suitable size is welded to the left end of the stud, into the hole of which a knob (5) is inserted. With it, you can conveniently rotate the axis to control the vise. As a result, the main working unit of the proposed design will be obtained.

Sponges (8) made of sections of rectangular pipes are attached to the inner and outer pipes by welding. To obtain a complete structure, supports (6 and 7) are attached to the outer pipe. They can be made from a metal corner and rectangular pipes. Homemade vise is ready.

In order to prevent the inner pipe from rotating, it is possible to make a longitudinal slot in the outer one and screw it into inner part fixing screw. This will not be necessary if sections of two similarly sized square or rectangular pipes are used as the outer and inner parts of the main assembly.

Homemade carpentry vise

In the home workshop for a workbench on which to process wooden crafts there is always a place. Doing this by placing workpieces on a workbench or fixing them with clamps is not always convenient, and sometimes impossible. This is especially true for the processing of the ends of workpieces, since the metal spoils the surface. wooden parts leaving marks on them.

Figure 2. Homemade carpenter's vise from bars.

And this means that you can’t do without a carpentry vice, and in order not to spend money, you can also make them yourself. An example of such a design is shown in Fig. 2. The body (1) is usually attached to the tabletop of the workbench, and the movable plate (2) moves along the guides (3). The movable plate moves due to the rotation of the screw pin (4), which is screwed into the fixed nut fixed on the reverse side of the vise body.

The carpenter's vise is attached to the workbench with long screws or bolts with nuts. Overlays - wooden, plastic or metal can be fixed on the vise jaws. Without them, damage to the workpieces during processing is possible. This is especially important when working with soft woods.

One of the main units is a screw pin (4) with an M20 thread. You can order it in the workshop or look for it in a sports store. The longer it is, the wider the sponges can be spread. With a thread length of 15 cm, they can be separated by a distance of about 8 cm. To attach the handle, a hole of a suitable diameter is drilled at the end of the screw. You can try to find blanks for making guides (3) in a hardware store among fasteners or at a flea market.

Sponges (1 and 2) are made of two pine boards. A hole for the screw and guides is drilled in each of them. For accuracy, it is better to connect the boards before drilling them, for example, with nails, which are then carefully removed. For processing long workpieces, a vice with longer jaws and two clamping screws can be made.

Thus, it is really easy to make a metalwork or carpentry vice with your own hands at home.

And having become acquainted with the principle of operation and the structure of the proposed clamping devices, it is quite possible to develop your own design.
