Types of footnotes in term paper

All basic design rules scientific works are set out in state standards, as well as in the methodological recommendations of the university. In turn, footnotes can use direct citation or indirect citation, which affects the design of both citations and footnotes in general. Direct quoting involves the use of the author's words without changes, and in the text you will issue a quote as a direct speech.

After these manipulations, your quote should look like:

Each subsequent footnote will have a different serial number.
Now consider how the footnote entry under the line will look like. When quoting directly, we indicate:

In addition, the design of footnotes also depends on the type of source. For example, dissertations, regulations, monographs and study guides imply only direct quotation. It should also be noted that the entry of the footnote itself under the dividing line may differ in font (10-12), type of style (italic, bold), the presence of the see sign and the number of punctuation marks, as well as their arrangement. Inline footnotes

Inline footnotes will seem to many to be easier to design than footnotes. For them, the use of direct and indirect quoting is also preserved, but the footnote always has the same form: we indicate the serial number and the page from which the material was taken. On the one hand, it is convenient to use inline footnotes, since it is not necessary to write down the source of information in full. All data will be displayed in the bibliography. But the disadvantage of using this type of footnotes is the constantly changing numbering of references. Since the full bibliography will be formed only when the work on the course paper is fully completed.

Customizing the look

Initially, the footnotes are numbered in ascending order. You can change this setting so that the numbering starts from 1 on every new page (or every new section)

Click the Menu button in the lower right corner of the Footnotes section. In the window, choose Format > Numbering from the menu and choose an option.

  • if you want the footnote text to appear below the text instead of at the bottom of the page,
  • if you want the numbering to start with a specific number, then press the "Menu" button in the lower right corner of the "Footnotes" section. In the window that opens, specify all the necessary parameters.

And if you want to use a symbol as a marker, then use the "Symbol" button.

Endnotes

I want to surprise you, but in order to make end-to-end numbering of footnotes, it is enough just to put a regular footnote. By default, in Word they are assigned numbers within the entire document.

How to make footnotes in term paper (example)

Let's start with the fact that there are several types of footnotes:

  1. Subscript, when a small number is indicated after the quote (as in exponentiation);
  2. Beyond the text, which are drawn up in square brackets containing the number of the source according to the list of references and the page containing the necessary information. If you need to specify several pages, write the first and last through a hyphen.

How to draw up footnotes in term paper according to GOST

Footnotes of the second type (out-of-text) should be formatted as follows: first, a square bracket is opened, then the source number is put without a space according to the list of references, after that - a semicolon, then the page number, separated from the semicolon by a space, and at the end again a square bracket , this time closing. If the required information is indicated on several pages, the first and last pages are written with a hyphen. Some universities also require the abbreviation “s.” before the page number, also separated by a space on both sides.

Correctly formatting footnotes is very simple - you just need to place them there Full description source in the same form as when indicated in the list of references (do not forget that all sources to which you have made footnotes should be mentioned there as well). The latest and current today GOST R 7.0.5-2008 calls the footnote a "bibliographic reference" and states that when indicating the source, the order of the elements should be as follows:

  1. Surname and abbreviated initials of the author (or authors);
  2. The name of the source, indicating the volume or part;
  3. Surname and initials of the translator (if any);
  4. The city of publication, the name of the publisher and the year in which the source was published;
  5. The total number of pages (sometimes replaced by the page number where the information you link to is located).

Based on this, if the source to which you already want to link is already listed in the bibliography, you can simply copy it from there - nothing needs to be redone.

How to make a footnote at the bottom of a page in Word 2007, 2010, 2013 or 2016

How to make a footnote in Word 2003

Footnotes are done a little differently in Word 2003. To do this, you need to place the cursor in the place to which the footnote should refer, open the "View - Link" menu and select the "Footnote" item there.

After that, a window with settings for footnotes in Word in 2003 will appear on the screen. As in more modern versions of Word, here you can change the location of the footnote and its format. For example, in order to insert a regular footnote, you need to select the position of the footnote "Bottom of the page" and click on the "Insert" button.

If the footnote should be located at the end of the document, then select the position of the footnote "At the end of the document."

After selecting all the necessary settings, click on the "Insert". As a result, a footnote will appear in the document in which you can enter text.
