S. Usachev "Clock"
Hours go by day by day.
Hours run after century...
- Where are you in a hurry, Clock? -
A man once asked.
The clock was amazing.
Thought.
Stopped.

The history of the invention and development of watches.

The first primitive concepts for measuring time (day, morning, day, noon, evening, night) were subconsciously suggested to ancient people by the regular change of seasons, the change of day and night, the movement of the Sun and Moon across the firmament.
The history of clocks is very interesting and informative. It was important for a person to know the exact time in order to optimally plan his actions, so progressively solar, water, mechanical clocks were invented. The result at the moment are those complex mechanisms that can be seen in modern stores.
The origin of the name of the word "clock".
The word "clock" appeared in everyday life in the XIV century, its basis was the Latin "clocca", meaning bell. And before that, the first experiments in determining the time were associated with the observation of the movements of the sun across the sky. In 3500 BC, the first sundial. The principle of their work was to observe the shadow formed during sunlight, since the position and length of the shadow change at different times.
In Greece, however, they came to the conclusion that it was necessary to divide the year into twelve months of thirty days each. Subsequently, the inhabitants of ancient Babylon and Egypt divided the day into hours, minutes, seconds, which played important role in the development of watchmaking.
Jost Burgey made the first clock in 1577 using the minute hand. This product also had a minute hand, the oscillations of the pendulum turned the cogwheel, which, in turn, changed the position of the hands on the dial. The dial was graduated at 12 o'clock, so the hand went around twice in a day.
At present, humanity has complex, reliable and high-precision watch movements created with the latest scientific research and designed in a wide variety of styles.
Not regular watch, ideally suited in style to the interior of the room, is always a good element of decor. Not only in terms of aesthetics, but also in terms of functionality. Like these ones original watch you can do it yourself.
A watch is a necessary, useful and, in general, everyday thing. Few people think about their design, because the main thing is that they show the time correctly.
But try to make a wall clock with your own hands - and you will notice that the atmosphere in this room has subtly changed.
Of course, this is not about assembling and adjusting the clockwork yourself - it should be used ready-made, bought in a store or removed from an old watch. But you can even fantasize about the design of the dial.

Step by step workflow:

1. Two sheets of A4 cardboard are glued onto an A3 sheet.

2. A circle is made on cardboard with a compass, after which it is cut out.

3. We wrap the discs with tape.

4. We wind a paper cord on the wire.

5. Then we wrap the wire around a round stick to make a curl.

6. Find the middle of the circle along the ruler.

7. Glue the discs and start decorating the watch.

8. Cut out hearts from discs and wrap with ribbon.

9. Decorate the heart with red sisal balls and glue them on the clock.

10. Glue sisal and rhinestones in the middle of the discs. On the central disk we install hands with a clock mechanism.

Such a trifle as an ordinary clock can become a central element of the interior if they are made by hand. The main thing in these watches is their uniqueness and the soul invested in them.

My relatives have renovated the kitchen. For the completed interior, there are not enough wall clocks. The old clock is in good condition, but outwardly it does not fit into the updated kitchen at all. It’s a pity to dispose of the watch, it has a gift inscription on it. I'll try to breathe into them new life.

To work with the clock, we will analyze them. Dial, glass (not plastic, as in modern watches) and frame.

I didn’t even try to remove the clock mechanism, because. Upon closer inspection, no fasteners were found. the dial will be accompanied by a gentle rotation of the minute hand, this will complicate the work a little.
So let's start with the frame. I decided to cover it with fabric, I just had in stock, suitable for color scheme. This is a fairly dense cotton fabric with elastane. When cut, it cuts quite a bit. We put the frame on the fabric and trace it with chalk for cutting, making indents along the edges for bends.

We cut out our pattern. Apply double-sided tape to the outside of the frame to secure the fabric before starting to wrap.

Having made small cuts in the corners and gluing double-sided tape inside the frame, we tighten it, carefully wrapping the edges of the fabric and gluing it onto the tape. I chose the adhesive tape not by chance, the fabric sticks well to it. The glue in this case would soak through the fabric and complicate the process.

When I finished fitting the frame, I tried it on my watch. It turned out great.

And we could stop there. But the factory decoration of the dial tells us that this is not a completely man-made product, it looks rather boring. In addition, relatives really wanted a wall clock with Roman numerals. So let's get to the dial. The dial is cast from plastic, the numbers and letters on it are part of a one-piece design. Therefore, I decided to putty the surface of the dial, leveling everything to zero. The height of the leg on which the arrows rotate allows us to apply 2-3 mm of putty.

Gently rotating the hands, I walked over the entire surface of the dial.

On the can of putty it says that it dries from 3 to 24 hours, I decided to wait as much as possible for reliability. A day later, I found microcracks on the surface and once again went through the putty, only rubbing these same cracks with a layer of less than 1 mm. The second layer dried for 5-6 hours.

After complete drying, with a small spatula, I slightly rubbed the surface, knocking out irregularities, and wiped it with a damp sponge, removing small particles. Primed with two coats of white acrylic paint without water, with intermediate drying of each layer. And finally, I toned the dial surface with the color of acrylic paint I needed without water, with chaotic strokes. It turned out such an interesting texture.

I found Roman numerals on the Internet and, in addition to them, the Eiffel Tower, which matches the style of the kitchen. I printed out the image, and, placing the sheet in a plastic file, circled the drawing with black stained glass paint from the Stained Glass children's set. This ink dries to sticky sticker.

A day later, the numbers dried in parallel with the dial, I transferred these stickers to the dial. Collected watches and...

... I hope the relatives will be pleased.

Hooray! I'm officially a shoemaker with boots. I’ve seen enough of how the participants of our master class in KhVOE made wall clocks, and now (less than half a year has passed) we have a tropical timekeeper in our kitchen.

At the beginning of May, a master class was held in our KhVOE, where we made wall clocks with our own hands. The idea of the workshop came up in January, and it was a pleasure to implement it. Here, by the way, the clock broke in the kitchen, which I had long ceased to like. She combined the pleasant with the useful. Firstly, I made a new device for determining the time, secondly, an article for a blog, and thirdly, I added my favorite tropical decor this summer.

Why make a watch with your own hands when you can buy

And so it is clear that made with your own hands, it is with soul and from the heart. Perhaps the purchased ones will be of better quality and with a guarantee, but there are more advantages to making a wall clock with your own hands:

  • you can implement any idea (for example, like mine with the tropics)
  • choose the size you need
  • find the correct arrows and mechanism
  • start a little better understanding of how wall clocks work
  • proudly tell everyone that you made them yourself (and this is not just a postcard or a flower, but a whole device).

What to make a dial for a wall clock

Thinking about the panel under the dial, it is worth remembering that the clock can be not only round, but also triangular, square, even in the shape of a flower.

  • Panels can be ordered at the laser cutting workshop
  • find and buy finished plywood in an online store or in a store with goods for needlework
  • make from a cork backing or thick thick cardboard
  • cut out drywall
  • make from sawn wood
  • or from a vinyl record.

How to decorate a wall clock

There are a lot of ways to decorate a wall clock, it all depends on your desire to create and bother.

  • You can print and paste the finished picture
  • paint with acrylic paints
  • draw something with watercolor, cut and paste
  • glue volumetric parts from thin plywood
  • embroider something on the fabric and fit the workpiece
  • you can draw or stick numbers.

Wall clock - materials and tools

The time taken is one and a half hours. We will need:

  • round plywood panel with a diameter of 30 cm
  • clock mechanism with hands
  • paper and pencil
  • ruler
  • acrylic paints and brushes
  • palette for mixing paints
  • pliers
  • scissors.

DIY wall clock - work progress

The mechanism can be ordered in the online store or used left over from an old watch. There are a couple of points to pay attention to:

  • dial thickness
  • thread diameter (should match the diameter of the hole in the middle of the panel)
  • and the height of the stem (the stump on which everything rests, and on which the arrows are put on).

For example, in my mechanism, the stem height is only 8 mm, which means that the thickness of the plywood blank should not exceed 4 mm, otherwise there will not be enough space to tighten the nut. The best overall stem height is 16mm and the thread height is 9mm. This mechanism is suitable for most wooden blanks.

If there are volumetric details on the dial, you need to make sure that the arrows will not cling to them.

1. Before you start making a wall clock with your own hands, you need to decide where the number 12 will be. To do this, turn the panel over, insert the clock mechanism, mark the middle of the top of the mechanism with a pencil (it will coincide with the middle of the loop) and draw a perpendicular line. It is from here that the countdown will begin and the distance between the numbers will be marked (if they are planned).

2. We take a sheet of paper, trace the outline of the dial on it and draw the decor. This is useful for seeing if the composition looks harmonious before it's too late to change something. I drew the outlines of the leaves on paper, then cut them out and transferred them to the plywood blank with a pencil.

3. We color the blank in accordance with the decor. I used white construction acrylic, art acrylic and colored paste for tinting.

4. When the paint dries, fasten the clockwork. It can have many details that can be used or ignored depending on the thickness of the dial. Usually, an assembly diagram is attached to the clock mechanism, which I advise you to follow. We string a rubber backing onto the stem and apply it to the dial with reverse side. The top (middle of the loop) should match the pencil mark (see point 1).

5. Turn the workpiece over, put a washer on the rod and tighten the nut. Here we need pliers so that we can twist it tighter.

6. We string the arrows. By the way, I repainted the arrows from white to black. There are also two points here. First, the arrows can be protective film to be removed. Secondly, the black art acrylic did not fit the metal very well, so I had to first prime the arrows with building white acrylic, and then apply black after drying.

Before stringing, you need to make sure that all the arrows are straight. First we string the hour, then the minute. Second is dressed last. They are strung to a slight click. It is important not to overdo it and not be too zealous so as not to break the delicate fasteners. The hands must be strictly parallel to each other and not touch, otherwise the watch simply will not work.

7. We set all the hands to 12 o'clock according to the mark, insert the battery and set up right time using a special wheel, which can be found on the mechanism on the reverse side.

A couple of evenings, an hour and a half - and I gladly launched my time. Take care of your time, spend it with those who give you joy!

Best,

Homemade watch options (35 photos)

A wall clock is a very practical interior detail. In the kitchen, they make it possible to keep track of time without being distracted from cooking and without turning on the phone for this (especially since hands can be covered in flour, oil or something else while cooking). Located in the room, they allow you to quickly find out the time without reaching into your pocket for a mobile phone. Eco-style lovers can make a clock out of wood with their own hands.

What are the benefits of a wooden clock?

Wood is a special material, items made from it have a number of advantages:

  1. Naturalness.
  2. Low cost(provided that the product is made by hand, because processing by a master often turns out to be quite expensive, especially if it is an individual order).
  3. Originality. Many people like to consider interior items from natural wood However, not everyone dares to keep such things in their home.

A clock made from juniper or other healing wood will disinfect the air. To do this, they do not have to be varnished. The look will be more natural if you carefully walk the sandpaper over the surface.

If you make a clock from a cut tree with your own hands, you can leave a layer of bark. This will give the product a more natural look.

How to choose a tree

The first step is to decide on the view. Will it be linden, soft enough and easy to work with, hard oak or healing juniper? You can choose what is easier to get or buy, and then cover with stain for the desired look.

After selecting the type, find suitable material. There are several possibilities in this case:

  1. It is also possible to purchase a ready-made saw cut at a sawmill, in souvenir or specialized stores, or also via the Internet.
  2. Make it yourself if you have a suitable stump or block, a chainsaw and the ability to use it.
  3. Wait until the annual sanitation is carried out and ask the workers to saw off the right piece. Or take a whole block of wood from them and continue to act in accordance with paragraph 2.

How to prepare material

Before making a clock out of wood with your own hands, you should spend time preparing for work. After the material is found, it should be left in a dry place for two weeks to dry. This is not necessary if the saw cut was bought in a store, however, even a tree purchased at a sawmill can be raw. If the material was taken from freshly sawn trees, the moisture level in it is many times higher than the permissible one. Such a workpiece, not previously dried, should not be taken into work.

If the wood is neglected to dry, cracks may form in the finished clock. In the worst case, the saw cut will split, and all the work done will be spoiled, you will have to start all over again.

Materials and tools

There is nothing difficult in making a clock out of wood with your own hands with high-quality raw materials and tools. What you need to prepare before starting work:

  1. Dry sleep.
  2. Clock mechanism (you can disassemble the old ones or buy cheap ones).
  3. Paint either burner(if it is planned not to draw the numbers, but to burn them out).
  4. Scissors.
  5. Tape or paper
  6. Hot glue gun.
  7. Fine sandpaper or sander.
  8. Hammer and chisel.

You can avoid the unpleasant situation when, in the process of work, it suddenly turns out that something is missing, if you make a list of what you need in advance and check it with it.

How to make a wooden clock with your own hands

In order not to complicate your life by sanding the saw cut or preparing the dial after the mechanism is installed, it is important to observe correct sequence actions:

  1. Drill a hole for the arrows in the center of the cut.
  2. Use a chisel and a hammer to make a recess for the mechanism on the reverse side.
  3. Process the dial and recess sandpaper or grinder.
  4. Install the mechanism, attach it with electrical tape and fix the box in which it is located using a thermal gun.
  5. Draw or burn the numbers on the dial.
  6. Set arrows.
  7. Install the mount on the back so that the clock can be hung on the wall.

Having spent not too much time and effort, you can make a clock out of wood with your own hands. A one-off handmade item looks much more interesting than a mass-produced product.

Variety of wooden clocks

A watch from a saw cut is one of the simplest options. By analogy with them, it can be made not from a transverse, but from a longitudinal die. The product will turn out irregular shape, so it is important to select the material so that the longitudinal section is beautifully shaped.

There are many options on how to make a beautiful clock out of wood. Wall-mounted, handmade, made for yourself or as a gift, they will delight their owners for a long time.

Possible design options for wooden clocks:

  1. cut out furniture board base of the desired shape.
  2. Make custom numbers. For example, in the form of coins or wooden balls. You can do without numbers and their designations
  3. Take a lot of thin plates or wooden rulers, fasten them so that you get a three-dimensional circle with a thickness equal to the short side of the plate. Get the original dial.
  4. You can use birch bark stretched in a frame of beautiful branches peeled from the bark as a dial.

Craftsmen can make more complex wood clocks with their own hands.

Drawings of the mechanism can be found on the Internet on specialized resources. In order to create similar models You need to have certain experience and skills. More simple options described above can be done by anyone with such a desire and a little patience.
