With this review, I want to begin a series of tests of various devices for coffee machines, which can expand the functionality of even a budget model, giving it the capabilities of premium coffee machines. The first such device in line is the Aqualey system for connecting coffee machines to the water supply. It is produced by a company from St. Petersburg (import substitution is on the way!), which kindly provided me with a sample for testing.

Let me start with the fact that connecting to a water supply is the prerogative of either commercial models (for example, or), or very expensive and rare home ones (usually this is typical). Russian reality, of course, makes adjustments. In the homeland of most coffee machines - in Italy - almost San Pellegrino flows from the tap, but in our country it is better to connect to the water supply after the household filter under the sink or directly to the cooler.

But if you want to teach your inexpensive coffee machine to fill itself with water, then nothing is impossible. This is such a simple set that contains everything you need to connect almost any model (with the exception of some models with closed access to the tank) to a household filter and make it practically autonomous:

The principle, of course, cannot be called innovative - any person with an engineering education, given the time, can assemble a similar eyeliner by selecting the necessary spare parts. In the case of Aqualei, the manufacturer has already done this for you, having developed universal kit for most coffee machines.

Aqualei is essentially a system of fittings and tubing that can be neatly routed from under-sink filters to your coffee machine. Plus main element and “know-how” - a float valve with a mount that regulates turning the water supply on and off. An additional tap is optionally installed so that, for greater peace of mind, you can turn off the water supply during a long absence or in case of cleaning the coffee machine. All materials are selected conscientiously, the manufacturer assures (and this is confirmed by the markings on the spare parts) that the fittings - tubes, taps and fittings (adapters) - are produced by the British company John Guest in the UK.

Anyway, enough looking, let's collect. I connected the Melitta Caffeo Varianza to the water supply and this is what it looked like:

Using fittings and a knife, I begin to assemble the tube configuration I need. This stage requires attention! First I try everything on. Before starting the process, I recommend straightening all the tube segments (since they come twisted, they have a slight curvature when unpacking). At the first stage, I try it on without cutting it under the complete faucet (with a blue valve). On last stage I’ll simply cut it into the appropriate segment, accurately understanding the future wiring from the machine under the countertop and further to the filter under the sink.

At this moment, I decide to slightly change the location of the coffee machine on the table and move the Aquali to back wall tank. In addition, after carefully reading the instructions again, I conclude that I initially forgot to cut out a corner of the round white sticker to secure the fastener, and glued it strictly opposite the long white bolt. In fact, you need to make a small corner cutout and glue the resulting semicircle “above” the bolt. In this case, the sticker acts as a stop-spacer between the supply tube and the mounting bolt (see photo below):

Now I finally secure the mount to the wall of the tank. For better vertical fixation, as indicated in the instructions, I made a corner cutout in the sticker and positioned it around the bolt.

I run the Aqualey hose under the countertop to the filter. I carefully cut the blue hose that went from the filter to the faucet on the sink and connect all three connections in the included tee.

This is what the installed Aqualey system looks like in my case. I decided to place the faucet that shuts off the water supply to the coffee machine on the side of it, so that it was at hand and there was no need to crawl under the sink. But, in principle, you can choose any other place for its insertion.

The coffee machine can now be pushed further under wall cabinet— There is no longer any need to take out the water tank. You just need to leave enough space to make it convenient to pour the grains.

Nuances

Like any potential client, I am primarily concerned with two questions: how reliable is the Aqualey system ( in other words, won’t the float malfunction and flood my entire kitchen?) and how warranty repair departments view the use of such a system ( Will they refuse to repair my coffee grinder, for example, if I use Aqualei?). Let's figure it out in order:

1. Reliability and protection against leaks. Here I must admit that I didn’t do a long test, but honestly for a couple of days I tried to get the float valve to “stick”: I turned it this way and that, turned the water off and on, used warm water, turned on the coffee machine so that it vibrated... But the valve stubbornly worked at the right moment. In general, the design looks quite reliable in its new condition. There are no complaints at all about the tubes and connections themselves - they really inspire confidence, although I am not a plumber.

However, when using the Aqualey system in the office, for peace of mind, I would turn off the water supply to the coffee machine at night using a special tap. I repeat, it is included in the kit.

2. Regarding the warranty, Then, after interviewing several service centers, I came to the conclusion that they do not have a common position on the question of whether a coffee machine upgraded in this way is under warranty or not. Definitely connecting the Aqualey to a coffee machine by insertion may be a reason for denial of the warranty (but may not be). But supplying water directly from above to the tank is unlikely to affect warranty repairs. After all, the service center simply will not know that you connected their coffee machine to the water supply; there will be no traces other than a couple of stickers on the machine.

3. Plus, of course, compatibility issue. The system is simply installed in coffee machines with top access to the water tank. Moreover, since the diameter of the tube and the dimensions of the other elements are relatively small, the aesthetic appearance suffers little; the system looks quite solid. But if the water tank extends from the front or side, then an insert will be needed. This involves drilling a small hole with a diameter of 7-8 mm in the body of the coffee machine and the tank itself. The manufacturer showed me several examples of such implementation, below are a couple of photos. But personally, I can’t say that I would immediately decide on a flush-mount installation. Still, the case deteriorates.

Review verdict on the Aqualey system

Without hiding the fact that this review is being published, as they say, “as an advertisement,” I hasten to assure that I took the product for testing under the condition “if I don’t like it, I won’t do a review.” Well, as you can see, I have completely overcome my skepticism :)

By the way, at first it seemed to me that such a device for connecting coffee machines to the water supply would be relevant exclusively in offices. However, after interviewing a dozen friends, it turned out that many of them were ready to consider this system specifically for home use. My guesses were confirmed by the manufacturer Aqualeya, who claims that more than 50% of orders are for home connections.

Indeed, in addition to the main functionality - automatic tank replenishment - Aqualey can significantly reduce the space occupied by a coffee machine, which is especially important in home kitchens.
