Do-it-yourself upholstered furniture restoration: tips with before and after photos. Do-it-yourself sofa restoration features, sequence of steps Restoration of a sofa with a high back

Intense operational loads, which the sofa in any family is subjected to every day, inevitably lead to wear of the product. The construction is loosened, the upholstery is overwritten, the folding mechanism begins to play pranks - these are signals that it is time to restore your favorite furniture. When it is not possible to turn to specialists for help, do-it-yourself restoration of the sofa will also help restore its gloss and comfort. Self Repair and updating save on expensive professional services, while you can be 100% sure that all stages of restoration are performed in good faith.

Before you start restoring your product, you should determine which parts need to be updated.. The wear process is accompanied by violations in the design and appearance products. Sometimes it is enough to update the upholstery, but most often all structural elements need repair and restoration. It's time to restore the sofa if:

  1. The coating of fabric or leather has faded, scuffs, tears have appeared. The filler hidden under the upholstery has become less elastic, sagging places on the seats have formed - in this case, replacement of materials will be required.
  2. The structure was loosened, integrity internal fastenings violated. The loose frame needs to be repaired, but if the boards of the crate are cracked or broken, they will need to be replaced.
  3. It has become difficult to lay out and fold the sofa, it takes effort, the transformation mechanism sticks. Problems may be associated with deformation of the fittings or weakening of the return springs - they will need to be replaced.

It is advisable to use components from the same manufacturer that were originally installed, otherwise there may be an incomplete fit of parts and a quick failure of the mechanism.

Necessary tools and materials

To restore the coating and the inside of the sofa, you will need upholstery fabric, filler, synthetic winterizer, interlining. It is not necessary to use the same "stuffing" as it was. You can buy better and more modern material.

Before refurbishment old sofa with your own hands, you need to prepare the following tools and consumables:

  • ring wrench or pliers;
  • screwdriver;
  • screwdriver set;
  • a furniture stapler, a needle with a large eye, a strong nylon thread;
  • tape measure, pencil, cutting chalk (or soap);
  • universal adhesive composition (for fixing sheets of soft filler, repairing frame elements);
  • self-tapping screws, metal dowels.

For processing repaired parts from chipboard, prepare sandpaper. And for servicing the folding mechanism - a suitable lubricant for this.

If you do not have experience in calculating the material for replacing upholstery and filler, you should not purchase it in advance. It would be more correct to go to the store after removing the old coating and measuring it.

Stages of work

Each stage of the restoration of the sofa with your own hands must be approached with great responsibility, because even with minor errors, the end result will be low. Repair takes several days, so it is recommended to place the furniture in a separate room. The procedure consists of a number of steps:

  • preparation and disassembly of a worn product;
  • marking and cutting of material;
  • tight-fitting soft seats and backs;
  • repair of the frame and metal elements of the unfolding mechanism;
  • assembly of updated parts of the sofa.

Disassembling and assembling the sofa is easier and safer with an assistant.

Preparation and disassembly of the product

The work begins with the disassembly of the structure and assessment of the extent of the restoration. Operations are carried out in the following sequence:

  1. Sidewalls with armrests are dismantled (fastening bolts are located with inside, you will need either a hex wrench or pliers to remove them).
  2. The seat and back are removed. If there are sliding parts, they are also dismantled. After disassembly, you need to check the condition of the frame elements for the presence of faults or cracks on them. In the case of a folding sofa with a retractable sleeping block, disconnect it.

When removing the fittings, they should be laid out in separate packages and signed so as not to be confused with each other during assembly.

When the product is disassembled, you can begin to remove the old upholstery. To do this, all staples that fix the material are carefully removed. Under the finishing fabric, several layers of felt or synthetic winterizer can be located, which are also removed for replacement. Next, you need to remove the filler, checking it for integrity and reusability. If you need to replace it, you will need to approximately estimate the dimensions, thickness and number of new plates.

If the furniture is more than five years old, it is not advisable to leave the old filler when restoring the sofa, even if the foam rubber looks whole and not smashed.

The last is the condition of the springs. In the absence of bursting parts, backlash and cracks, as well as creaking, this element will not have to be restored. good block can last for several decades.

Material selection

If you intend to update the sofa with a minimum of costs, you should choose practical inexpensive materials. Furniture fabrics or eco-leather can be used as upholstery. It should be borne in mind that the cost of leatherette is higher, and it is much more difficult to work with it than with woven-based materials. The fabrics used for furniture upholstery should be wear-resistant, environmentally friendly, and practical. Perfect for:

  • classic jacquard;
  • chenille;
  • inexpensive velor;
  • flock;
  • microfiber;
  • tapestry.

Polyurethane foam, foam rubber, latex can be used as a filler. Foam rubber is considered to be the cheapest offer, its average service life is 3-5 years. It provides the required softness, but over time loses its ability to restore its original shape. The best option when restoring a sofa with your own hands, latex is considered. It is environmentally friendly, optimal performance elasticity, durability, porous structure eliminates the likelihood of mold. The only drawback is the high cost. Due to its good price-performance ratio, PPU is the most popular material. It is quite elastic, does not deform during long term, provides high level comfort.

Element repair

In most cases, the transformation mechanism, the frame and the spring block are subject to restoration, the substrate, sheathing material to be replaced. Work with details is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. Renewal of damaged or rotten frame elements. Heavily worn wooden blocks need to be replaced with new ones, minor chips should be treated with a special compound to protect wood. Chipboard is the most fragile element: even if small cracks, deflections on any part, it must be removed from the structure, and then a new one must be installed.
  2. Repair, replacement of parts of the transformation mechanism. The latter, in most cases, is represented by metal elements that can only be deformed from a strong load. A bent metal support should not be leveled, it is better to replace it immediately. The type of repair carried out depends on the extent of the damage. With a slight deformation, it is enough to apply force with your hands in the direction of straightening; strong defects are removed by welding or replacing the part. The spring-loaded folding mechanism, as a rule, does not need overhaul. It is usually enough to lightly touch it up, remove rust from all parts with WD, if necessary, treat it with machine oil or other lubricant.
  3. Updating the filler, fitting the elements with new upholstery. The filler is placed on a felt base, glued. Between it and the sheathing fabric, it is imperative to lay a synthetic winterizer or holofiber. Restoration upholstered furniture do it yourself is often considered impossible precisely because of the difficulties with the sheathing, but with a careful consistent approach, the result will be no worse than that of professionals. When cutting upholstery fabric on your own, you should leave a margin of about 5-10 centimeters along the edges of the workpiece. Size adjustment is made immediately after measuring the dimensions of the seat and backrest. It is necessary in order to be able to arrange the hem of the material in the places of its fastening. The new upholstery should not be pulled too tight, step by step shooting the folded material every 8-10 cm.

To calculate the amount of fabric and the subsequent cutting of the new skin, you should take measurements from the old covers.

Necessary materials and tools

Tools and materials necessary for the repair of upholstered furniture

Restoring an old sofa will take time. It is a creative process that requires desire, tools and good material. Everything you need to repair a standard sofa 180 * 90 is indicated in the table. The purchase of filler and fabric for upholstery is best done with a margin.

DIY materials and accessories for sofa repair

The following tools may be required:

  • building glue;
  • stapler for furniture;
  • strong kapron thread, and a needle to it;
  • ring wrench, pliers, screwdriver;
  • jigsaw, in last resort, ordinary saw(if chipboard replacement is required).

Variety of furniture repair tools

Cut the fabric into a cover in advance. Sewing dense elements is difficult, so the manufacture of the material can be ordered by a seamstress. In order not to make a mistake with the sizes, use the old fabric as a template. When cutting, be sure to leave 5-10 centimeters, for fastening, take into account the height of the seat (the width of the back).

Restoration process: step by step instructions

We check the frame and base of the sofa, we make a replacement in case of breakage

Before restoring the sofa with your own hands, you need to check the condition of the main frame. If there are cracked or sagging bars, it is better to replace them. An array of wood rarely requires repair, but chipboard breaks often. It is not worth repairing, here you need to completely replace the broken part.

We drag the lower base of the sofa, as a template we take the old upholstery

The repair of the back, seat and armrests is slightly different, but in general, the restoration scheme for different parts is approximately the same.

We replace the upholstery on the inside of the armrests, replace the filler and sew a new cover

First of all, you need to carry out dismantling work:

  • remove the side armrests (usually the bolts on them are made from the inside, here you may need a hex wrench or pliers);
  • remove the seats and backs from the fasteners to the lower frame;
  • remove the old upholstery, remove the staples too;
  • carefully dismantle the old filler, check for suitability for reuse;
  • remove the springs, check their condition, if necessary clean, lubricate, replace in whole or in part;
  • check the condition of the chipboard, if necessary, replace the sheets.

We carry out the replacement of the outer part of the armrests and connect both parts together

All small parts from parsing it is better to put it in one container so as not to lose it.

We fix the upholstery at the base, if necessary, use a hammer and a stapler

At the second stage, we replace the old elements. To fasten parts, it is best to use both glue and a stapler. But if necessary, you can get by with handy tools. For example, instead of a stapler, use small carnations:

  • on both sides of the spring block lay dense fabric, on each side, bend the edges inward and sew with a nylon thread;
  • lay the spring frame on a wooden base, fix the springs through the fabric with a stapler. If there is no tool, you can make arched staples from steel wire, or from thin nails, hammering the “hat” to the side;
  • lay a new, or suitable old, filler;
  • pull the entire structure with a fastening fabric, in the manner of upholstery, fix it;
  • put on a new cover, secure with glue and a stapler.

The turn of the back of our marvel has come - we are doing the work according to the same principle

The final stage - decoration

We fix the outer part of the sofa, decorate with beautiful legs and decorate with buttons - we get a great new sofa

Do-it-yourself sofa restoration is an interesting activity, as is its decoration. Here you can simply lay beautiful pillows, or make a carriage coupler.

Do-it-yourself carriage screed for the back of the new diana

Usually, the backs are decorated in this way, leaving the seats solid. The elements of the tie are simple, you need to prepare buttons, or metal rivets. Cross diagonals can be emphasized with a ribbon. In order for the foam rubber to lie flat, it is necessary at the replacement stage to cut small circles from the filler - places for future buttons. Then, cover with fabric and sew on the selected elements. To tighten the buttons, you can use a stapler, or strong threads, tightening them on the other side.

Do-it-yourself upholstered furniture repair

If the design contains wooden elements, a figured wooden array in color can be glued to the front of the armrests. Then all the furniture parts are assembled back. It is important to check all fasteners so that nothing comes off during operation. That's all, the restoration of the old sofa is finished!

Not every old and sagging sofa has a place in a landfill. Restoring upholstered furniture can bring as much joy as buying a new one. And maybe even more if you like to do things with your own hands. In this article, Dekorin will tell and show how sofas and armchairs are reupholstered with new upholstery, how pillow filling can be replaced, how to repair springs and mask minor damage. Let your old furniture become a source of pride!

Restoration of upholstered furniture inside and out. Step by Step Examples

Repair and restoration of upholstered furniture may consist of the following steps:

  1. Disassembly of an object into its component parts. As a rule, this is required for furniture with wooden legs, armrests or other parts that need repair or replacement.
  2. grinding wooden elements with sandpaper, followed by cleaning with a damp cloth. A wet cloth should absorb all the small particles, so that the paint (or varnish) will lie more evenly and last longer.
  3. Wood painting. Before applying paint with a brush, it is recommended to coat the surface with a primer. We still recommend using spray paint, which is applied easily and evenly, which will greatly simplify your work and save time. Usually 3 layers is more than enough. After the paint has dried, it can be applied protective covering which will prevent cracking.
  1. Replacement of interior filling and upholstery. About how to rest the springs inside an old sofa or chair, we will tell you in detail below in this article. As for the upholstery of upholstered furniture, it all depends on the characteristics of the restored product. For example, the seat of the chair in this example was enough to wrap with a new fabric, which was fixed with a stapler. See more examples with step by step photos below!
  2. Assembling a piece of furniture into a single whole.

How do you like this transformation?

Restoration of pillows for sofas and armchairs

Perhaps this item is the simplest and most inexpensive in the process of restoring upholstered furniture. You will need to measure the height, length and width of your pillows and, based on the data obtained, purchase the required amount of foam rubber. Subtract about 5-10 mm from each edge to get the right dimensions to fill the pillow. For softness and longer service life, be sure to wrap the foam rubber with batting or padding polyester. Here is what the finished filling looks like in the photo:

Repair of spring upholstered furniture: the best way

This method of repairing a spring sofa or chair is considered the most reliable of all existing ones, although it requires a lot of time. Consider its implementation step by step:

  1. Make sure you remove all remnants of upholstery, staples and nails from the frame. In this case, the furniture body was already completely ready for the installation of the seat (cleaned, sanded, washed, painted). The springs were removed and set aside for later use. Before that, the master took a few photos so as not to forget how they were located.
  2. Install the straps (slings) on the lower part of the seat for attaching the springs. The more of these strips you install, the stronger the seat will be. Secure them with a stapler, leaving a couple of centimeters of matter on each edge. The tension should be moderate so that the sling sags slightly when pressed on it.
  3. The extra centimeters from each edge should be bent and also attached to the frame with a stapler. Repeat these steps until all vertical lines are installed, then move on to horizontal lines. Remember that they should intertwine with the vertical ones, and not just go under them.
  4. Reinforce the strength of each webbing with three small upholstery studs. This is how the whole process of repairing upholstered furniture looks like in the photo:

5. Now you can proceed directly to the installation of springs. You can use an old photo or just evenly distribute them on the support from the lines. The end of each spring should "facing" in the same direction as all the others.

6. The springs are attached to the straps either with a special tool or with a thick string of twine and a special button. Each spring must be fixed at three points.

7. Drive 2 nails at the end of each vertical and horizontal row of springs.

8. Measure the length of the twine, which will be 2 times the length of the seat plus 40-50 cm. Fold the piece in half and create a loop around the nails, as shown in the photo below. After that, pulling the twine, hammer the nails with a loop to the very end with a hammer.

9. Now our goal is to intertwine the springs together to form the seat and connect all the springs together. Start and finish tying knots at each end on the second "ring" from the top, then immediately move on to the top rings. This will allow you to get a dome-shaped seat.

10. After you tie all the springs together, wrap the twine around the stud and hammer it in with a hammer until it stops. Fasten the free end of the thread with a stapler.

11. For the second thread from each secured loop, repeat steps 9 and 10, but only it should be tied exclusively on the upper rings, without “falling” to the second level from the top.

12. Tie all the vertical rows in this way, then the horizontal rows and, to be sure, you can still walk diagonally. As a result, none of your springs will be able to move separately from the rest. be guided step by step photo for fixing springs in the seat of upholstered furniture:

Finally, there is still a constriction of the finished seat. In this case, the master simply sewed on the fabric (which could also be done with a stapler), and masked the seams with a ribbon.

Upholstery or upholstery replacement of upholstered furniture

Reupholstering upholstered furniture can also be quite a chore, but it's definitely worth it, especially if you don't have any special plans for the weekend. Next, you will learn how to properly reupholster an old sofa or chair with your own hands.

Stage 1. Removing the old upholstery

  1. You may think that you know this piece of furniture by heart. But still, before removing the upholstery, take pictures of it inside, outside, front and back, taking close-ups of especially difficult areas near the armrests, etc.
  2. Carefully remove the old upholstery, being careful not to damage either it or the furniture itself. You may need a staple remover, screwdriver, and other tools for this. It is recommended to remove the fabric in the following order:
  • From the bottom base (turning the sofa on the back or upside down);
  • From the outer part of the back and armrests;
  • From the inside of the back and armrests;
  • From the seat.

The old upholstery will be used by you as a template. Before putting it on a new fabric, we advise you to iron it with an iron.

Stage 2. Sewing new upholstery and upholstery of upholstered furniture

  1. Use your photos and old upholstery as a guide. Start upholstering furniture from the bottom base, then work on the armrests, backrest and seat in that order.

2. Cut the fabric according to the finished pattern, taking into account the following:

  • At the edges that will be sewn together with threads, leave an additional 10-15 mm of fabric;
  • At the edges that will be stapled, add about 50mm, which will be used to stretch the upholstery over the sofa.

3. Sew the sections of fabric where necessary and pull it over the bottom, securing with a stapler around the edges.

5. Behind her is the outer part of the armrests.

Pay attention to how the master did without seams and secured the outer upholstery of the armrests with a hammer.

The photo below shows Alternative option armrest restoration. The master fixed them with a stapler, after which he covered the staples with a beautiful braid.

  1. Let's return to our example. After the armrests came the turn of the back. A rope sewn around the perimeter gives it an interesting and expressive shape.

This technique can also be used to give expression to the armrests, which was done during the restoration of this chair.

  1. The outer part of the backrest is fixed in the same way as the outer upholstery of the armrests. Additionally, the sofa was decorated with buttons and new legs. In the next photo you can compare the sofa before and after the repair and upholstery.

Do-it-yourself upholstered furniture restoration: tips with before and after photos updated: April 20, 2018 by: Margarita Glushko

Regardless of the type and quality of upholstery, upholstered furniture loses its appeal over time. The upholstery wears out, looks old and dirty, although the basic structure remains quite solid and solid. Should I spend money on a new sofa? Not at all the fact that it will be better than the old one. Sofa restoration is best option in a similar situation, you can find out more on the website - http://rem-mebel.kiev.ua/restoration-leather-furniture/. This is a way to update the furniture in the house, while saving a considerable amount of money.

Possible difficulties

Before you start restoring an old sofa, it is useful to find out what difficulties you may encounter in the process of doing this work:

  • Problems associated with disassembling the structure into separate parts.
  • If the sofa has a complex shape, it can be difficult to cut the upholstery.
  • During the restoration process, it turns out that it is necessary to replace not only the upholstery, but also the filler and (or) individual parts.
  • It is quite difficult to work with separate upholstery materials. So, leather and leatherette are much more difficult to work with than textiles.

Important! If the sofa is antique, it is better to entrust the work experienced craftsmen. If you have a minimum of carpentry skills, it is better not to undertake the restoration of antiques.

Stages of work:

  1. Disassembly of the sofa, dismantling of individual elements.
  2. Removing worn upholstery.
  3. Cut upholstery material. In this case, old parts can be used as patterns.
  4. Upholstery fastening.
  5. Assembling the structure together.

What is required for work?

So, before you restore the sofa with your own hands, you need to prepare the tools and Consumables:

  • Upholstery textiles.
  • Screwdriver with a flat sting.
  • Hex key.
  • Furniture stapler.
  • Anti-stapler.
  • filler material.
  • Scissors.
  • Wire cutters.
  • Threads.

Now let's look at each stage of recovery in more detail.

Disassembly

Remove in stages the following parts of the sofa structure:

  • Overhead elements.
  • Pillows.
  • back.
  • Sidewalls.
  • Seat.

Important! As a rule, the only difficulty at this stage is that fasteners are constantly lost. To prevent this from happening, it is advisable to collect them in a special package.

Removing worn upholstery

Here are the best helpers home master are a flathead screwdriver and a staple remover.

Important! Try to remove the material with the utmost care, as it will still be needed to cut the new upholstery.

Be sure to remove dust and debris. Be sure to evaluate the condition of the filler. If the foam is badly worn, it's time to replace it. Sometimes you have to change the springs if they have lost their elasticity. Check all connections. If necessary, fix them with screws or glue.

Cutting upholstery material

How correctly, beautifully and accurately you cut the upholstery fabric depends on how the restored product will look like. Use old upholstery as patterns, not forgetting about 2-3 cm allowances.

Important! It is advisable to purchase fabric with a small margin so as not to make a mistake when cutting.

How to choose material?

When choosing upholstery material, it is necessary to take into account not only aesthetic, but also practical qualities. It is important that the material is well cleaned of dirt, does not shed, does not have a strong smell. If the fabric is fluffy, consider the direction of the pile.

Important! Want to save on upholstery? Then choose a fabric without a pattern or with a small pattern. Then the problem of selecting a pattern will not be relevant, you can place the patterns as economically as possible.

Can be used for upholstery different shades. Armrests are best done dark, as they get more dirty. For the back and seat, a lighter fabric is suitable.

Now about the choice of filler. The most common options are synthetic winterizer or furniture foam rubber:

  • Sintepon. The quality of the material can be judged by the color. White color indicates good quality material. Any other shade indicates that the filler is made from low-quality recycled materials. A good synthetic winterizer is odorless, it is durable, with a uniform density.
  • Foam rubber. High-quality furniture foam rubber is dense, porous, with small bubbles. If the foam good quality, then after deformation, it almost instantly restores its shape. Optimal Thickness material is 5 cm. If you want to make a more rigid structure, take 2 sheets of foam rubber 3 and 2 cm and put felt between them.

Construction assembly

It is produced in the exact reverse order of the disassembly process. It is advisable to photograph each stage of disassembly. Then it will be much easier to assemble furniture.

To begin with, before proceeding directly to the restoration of the sofa with your own hands, you need to make sure that it is expedient to carry it out, namely, the integrity of the frame itself. After that we will prepare all essential tool and consumables: screwdriver, pliers, hammer, stapler, sewing machine, threads, scissors, screwdriver, PVA glue, foam rubber, coarse calico, synthetic winterizer, upholstery fabric. In addition, new springs or a spring block may be needed, depending on the degree of wear of the sofa.

So, let's move on to the restoration process itself, which consists of the following steps:

Content

Sofa disassembly

Dismantling the sofa is necessary, first of all, in order to identify damaged parts in its design, which will be replaced with new ones during the repair process, or to repair them, if possible. Let's start the disassembly by unscrewing the armrests. They are most often attached to two bolts, the first of which is under the seat of the sofa, and the second behind. The armrests can be combined with the legs or placed separately. In order to unscrew them, we raise the seat or you can move the retractable part, which depends on the design features of the sofa itself.

It is difficult to do without the help of outsiders in this matter, since the sofa is a rather bulky thing. After that, turn it over in the unfolded form, unscrew the back. When the back is removed, we dismantle the transformation mechanism using a conventional screwdriver.

Removing the upholstery

Thus, the sofa is completely disassembled, you can begin to remove the old upholstery from it. This is done with a flat screwdriver and pliers, which hook the ends of staples or nails, or with an anti-stapler.

We put the old covers aside and do not throw them away until we cut out new ones, as they will become a template for them. After removing the upholstery, we remove the old foam or batting filler, leaving only the spring block.

Replacing springs or spring block

Now check the condition and performance of the springs. If we notice deformations, breakage, etc. one or several springs at once, then we have to replace them. All springs modern type, as a rule, are attached to each other with special spirals. In order to disconnect one of them, we loosen the fixation of the spiral from one end, and pull it out from the other end like a screw. When the spring is released on both sides, we replace it with a new one. Next, we attach a new spring in the same way in the reverse order as we removed the old one.

For more information about the hauling of the old sofa, you can see the video

Sometimes there are situations when almost all the springs in the spring block must be replaced, then it makes no sense to change each of them individually. In this case, you will have to buy a new spring block and replace the old one with it.

Pattern of new upholstery and its fastening

After replacing the springs or the spring block, we proceed to the assembly of the sofa itself. First, we cover the spring block with coarse calico and fix it with brackets around the entire perimeter. Then, according to the shape of the sofa frame, cut out the sheet furniture foam, which has a thickness of 30-40 mm. It must be glued to the calico so that during the operation of such a sofa it does not go. To do this, we apply PVA glue at the same time on the calico and foam rubber and apply them to each other until they stick together. To give additional volume to our sofa, you can also stick a piece of padding polyester over the foam rubber, which is cut out in the same way.

We carefully rip the old covers at the seams, as a result of which we get finished pattern. We apply them to the new upholstery fabric and cut out new covers strictly along the contour with a slight overlap. Then we sew each part of the cover together on a sewing machine.

We carefully put ready-made covers on the sofa, while, in the process of fastening with furniture stapler we stretch them when fixing to avoid wrinkles in the finished sofa.

Sofa assembly

When all its parts are upholstered with new fabric, including the backrest, armrests and others, you can proceed to assembly. This is done in reverse order, as in disassembly. So, the restoration of the sofa with our own hands is over and we got almost new furniture that will last you more than one year.
