DIY antique wooden clock. New time for an old clock. From wooden sticks

Currently, DIY watch decoupage has gained enormous popularity! This is not surprising: in an age of stress, sometimes you want to do something for the soul, and if it also has a functional and aesthetic purpose, then this hobby is simply doomed to success!

Watch decoupage technique

If previously it was difficult to get materials and templates for decoupage, now they are available in abundance in any bookstore or creativity department. You can easily purchase stencils, dials, blanks, hands, accessories or other attributes for decoupage watches. Therefore, this newfangled hobby is an acceptable option for beginners.

Let's look at the technique of decoupaging a watch with your own hands step by step.

  1. Preparing the stencil. So, you purchased a watch blank in advance from a craft store (as in the photo).
  2. The surface of the workpiece should first be prepared: sanded if the watch is wooden or degreased if it is plastic.
  3. Create a background image as in the photo. You can choose any style depending on your preferences or the interior features of the room that you want to decorate with a future masterpiece.
  4. Glue the selected picture onto the blank (see photo).
  5. Advice! Torn edges are easier to mask, so it's better not to cut out the image, but simply tear it off the paper with your hands.

    You can glue the picture on the template either with PVA glue diluted with water, or with special decoupage glue. The main thing here is to act carefully, avoiding wrinkles in the picture. After this, the blank of the future watch should be dried and coated acrylic varnish, and then dry the workpiece again. Repeat this pattern three times.

    This technique is described in more detail in the video at the end of the text.

    Choosing a style

    Before proceeding directly to the decoupage of watches with your own hands, you should decide on the style of the future masterpiece. The following decoupage options are now most popular:

  • Provence;
  • vintage or antique;
  • "Hollywood".

First, you should choose the room in which you plan to hang your future masterpiece. For example, if this is a kitchen, then some kind of romantic sketch or a Hollywood-style clock would look inappropriate in it. On the contrary, a clock in Provence or vintage style will fit perfectly into the interior of most kitchens.

Perhaps the Provence style is one of the most common and understandable. If the directions of Provence and vintage are somewhat reminiscent of each other, then the Hollywood style is fundamentally different from them. So, it is characterized by the following nuances:

  • Use as the main following colors: black, red, white, blue. Whatever colors you choose, they should, if possible, contrast with each other and stand out from the background.
  • Maximum shine, the use of all kinds of rhinestones is encouraged.
  • Using images of famous Hollywood actors, preferably from the Golden Era of Hollywood: Audrey Hepburn, Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo, etc. In this case, you will partially get a retro style.

All styles are suitable for beginners. You can familiarize yourself with these options by watching the video at the end of the text.

Features of dial decoupage

You can freely buy a ready-made dial in a store, but it’s much more interesting to make it yourself. So, the numbers on the clock can be made from almost the first objects that catch your eye. It all depends on your imagination and, of course, on the decoupage style of the watch.

Let's say you chose the Provence style. Then for the dial it would be appropriate to use wine bottle caps, dried lavender branches, and soap in the shape of small hearts. In addition, it is not necessary that there be numbers on the dial: just marking the divisions is enough.

Idea for a clock on a Pink Floyd record.
It is also convenient to make a clock on a plate because the center of the dial for the hands is precisely marked. However, it should be remembered that the round printing sticker in the center is difficult to “overlap” if it white. It would be more practical to use a plate with a red sticker for the base.

If decoupage is ordinary wall clock may seem boring, then we have saved another one for you original version– decoupage of a clock on a vinyl record. The technique of such decoupage is not much different from that described above, but it has its own characteristics:

  • First you need to prepare the plate by priming it with white paint. Let it dry for a while.
  • To apply a picture, it is better to use special napkins for decoupage. We tear off the two bottom layers and apply only the top one to the plate. Using a flat synthetic brush, apply glue over the napkin. Let it dry, then cover our workpiece with a layer of varnish. After drying, apply varnish again.

Attention! You need to use special varnish and glue for decoupage.

  • We mark the dial. For this you can use wine corks, shells and any other items for which your imagination is enough.

Advice! Apply paint with a dishwashing sponge.

  • We cover the watch with at least three layers of acrylic varnish.
  • We cover the sticker on the back of the plate with cardboard. We make a hole in the center and glue the clock mechanism. Attach the arrows and insert the batteries.

The original watch is ready!

The clock in the kitchen is the main clock in the house, because it is needed both during cooking and when all household members are getting ready for their business. They can also decorate the interior and demonstrate the taste of the housewife, so you should choose them consciously. Today we will talk about how to choose a clock for the kitchen using 6 tips and 40 photo examples. Well, for those who love handicrafts, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the master class on making a wall clock for the kitchen with your own hands, which you will find at the end of the article.

6 tips for choosing a watch

  1. A small kitchen needs a small clock, a large kitchen needs a big one

A large clock will clutter up the space, but in a spacious kitchen, or show itself in all its glory and be visible from any end of the room.

Medium and small watches big kitchen“get lost” and won’t look so impressive. But in a small room they will be both comfortable and compact.

  • The universal dial size is 33-36 cm in diameter as in the photo below.

  1. “Duty” watches must be quartz

Mechanical watches are timeless classics; they are durable and more valuable than quartz watches due to their more complex mechanism and manual adjustments during assembly. However, they have significant disadvantages - high cost, small selection of designs, inaccurate movement and the need for timely winding. Agree that regularly monitoring the work of the “on duty” kitchen clock and starting them will not be very convenient, especially if they are wall-mounted.

Battery-powered quartz watches are more affordable, run more accurately, do not require winding, and are silent. And the range of designers in this category today is much larger. You can choose from classic models, such as those with a pendulum, to the most modern ones, including electronic ones.

  • However, if you choose a clock for the dining room or if you prioritize not ease of use, but beauty, durability and chic, then choose mechanical models. Most often they have very high-quality cases, excellent finishes and the classic “functions” of a striker, pendulum or cuckoo.
  1. Pay attention to watches with additional features

When choosing a clock for the kitchen, think about what additional functions you may need:

  • If you need them primarily for cooking, then purchase small electronic or regular watch with a timer as in the photo below.

  • Pay attention to the weather clock if you grow or have, say, wood floors and kitchen set. A hygrometer and thermometer will help you monitor air humidity and temperature.
  • Date and day of week display - simple but useful Everyday life function.
  1. The best clock for a classic kitchen is a wooden one with a round dial and Roman numerals.
  • For classic interiors kitchens (in the style, baroque, empire, etc.) are better to choose wooden clock with a round dial, but not necessarily with a round case. After all, for example, watch cases with a traditional pendulum have the shape of a rectangle or ellipse.
  • As for the numbers, the Roman ones will be the most traditional, but the beautiful Arabic ones will not spoil either.
  • The watch case and dial classic style preferably made of natural wood rather than the common MDF or wood-look plastic. At the same time, for elegant and strict classics, for example, in a palace style, the wood should be polished, and for Provence and shabby chic styles, it should be aged. The remaining parts (dial, hands, etc.) can be metal in the color of antique bronze or gold.
  • For a dining room in a classic style or for a very spacious kitchen You can choose not a wall clock, but a grandfather clock with a pendulum, weights, strikes, or with a buffet and bar.

  1. The best kitchen clocks in modern style- laconic but original

IN modern interiors(, etc.) the watch may be laconic or, conversely, complex, but in any case original design due to the texture, color, shape of the dial and case, as well as unusual divisions and hands. Modern watches can be made of plastic, wood, and metal.

  • We do not recommend buying a clock for the kitchen without divisions - they look interesting, but it is inconvenient to use them to track the cooking time or figure out how many minutes are left before leaving the house.

In the slider you can see photos of clocks in modern kitchen interiors.

  1. Place the clock in a place where it can be seen both while cooking and while eating

Where is the most convenient place to place or hang a kitchen clock? The most common places are:

  • Above dining table or above the bar counter;
  • Above a door, arch or entrance opening;
  • Above the hood (if it has a canopy or allows you to hang the device high);
  • There is a set on the shelf (but further/higher from the stove and sink).

Try to choose a place where the device will not be exposed to direct sunlight during the daytime. Sun rays. The following selection of photos shows some examples of clock placement in the kitchen.

Master Class

And finally, we present a master class on how to make a wall clock for the kitchen with your own hands.

Step 1. Prepare some kind of base for making the dial. It can be anything: wood, a plate, a vinyl record, cardboard, a polyurethane foam rosette, or even an old colander. The main thing is that the workpiece is suitable in size to the hands of the clock mechanism and it is possible to drill a hole in it for its fastening.

Step 2. Mark the center of the dial and make a hole in it using a drill-driver (at low speeds so as not to damage the workpiece) or an awl. The diameter of the drill must correspond to the diameter of the screw in the clock mechanism.

Step 3. If the material requires processing and decoration, then this must be done before installing the mechanism. Once the background of the dial is ready and dried, you will need to draw divisions or numbers on it (it’s best to use a stencil to make it neat). However, if you wish, you can do without them. At the end of painting, the entire dial must be coated with matte acrylic varnish. water based in 2 layers. Then the entire decor will become more wear-resistant and tolerant of wet cleaning.

Step 4. Now it's time to install the clock mechanism (you can buy it separately or remove it from an old/cheap watch). To do this, separate the mechanism from the second, minute and hour hands and insert it into the prepared hole on the underside of the dial. Then with front side of the clock we put the nuts on the screw, the hour, minute and lastly the second hand (if there is one).

Step 5. Hurray! The kitchen clock is ready, all that remains is to turn the hands to make sure that nothing is interfering with its rotation, insert the battery and hang the product on the wall.

  • apply the card to the adhesive surface;
  • Apply another layer of PVA on top;
  • we expel all air bubbles from under the card with our fingers or a brush;
  • dry with a hairdryer.

6. Glue rice paper on top. We work with it the same way as with a regular decoupage napkin.

7. Apply at least 3 layers of varnish.

8. We make marking drawings and paste numbers of the appropriate size.

9. We cut the hole that was sealed during the process again; After turning the scissors a couple of times, we enlarge the hole for the clock mechanism to the desired size.

10. Insert the mechanism and put on the hands.

13. Insert the battery.

Coffee clock

We continue to use decoupage to decorate the watch, but we can also use another decoration option. In this case, we will make our own watches from coffee beans, and the master class below is dedicated to this very topic.

Materials:

  • blank with a hole in the center;
  • clockwork;
  • a napkin with a beautiful coffee-themed design;
  • coffee beans
  • priming;
  • water-based decoupage varnish;
  • colored acrylic;
  • contour on glass - silver, gold, bronze;
  • stained glass paint;
  • sponge, brush, regular and rubber roller, paper file, toothpick;
  • PVA glue.

1. Prime the surface of the workpiece.

2. Paint one side with white paint, the other with brown.

3. Apply PVA glue diluted in a ratio of 1:2 onto a dry surface. We wet the napkin and glue it on top. Cover with glue again. We apply a wet stationery file and roll it on top with a roller, getting rid of air bubbles. Leave until completely dry. Then we coat it with varnish.

4. Using a contour, draw the boundaries of filling with coffee beans.

5. After 10-20 minutes we can start decorating with grains. To do this, cover a small area with stained glass paint and carefully place coffee on it in random order, moving it towards each other with a toothpick.

6. After an hour, the paint will dry and everything will stick.

7. The dial can be made from improvised materials, the same coffee beans, you can draw numbers using an outline. Using the same outline, you can draw additional details: even butterflies, if you think they are appropriate.

8. All that remains is to insert the clock mechanism and the battery into it.

Decoupage technique - applique in a new way

You can make an original wall clock with your own hands using the decoupage technique. You will have to purchase a piece of plywood of the shape you like, napkins with a theme to your liking, and a clock mechanism. You will need acrylic primer, varnish and decoupage glue (or PVA).

We process the workpiece sandpaper with fine grain (to a perfectly smooth state), prime it in several layers, and process it again with sandpaper. We cut out the necessary elements from a napkin or decoupage card, separate the most upper layer, we compose a composition based on.

The most in a simple way gluing elements is “file”:

    coat the base with a thin layer of glue where the elements of the composition will be located;

    apply a napkin;

    We put cellophane film on top (a stationery “file” for papers is suitable - hence the name of the method), carefully iron the picture - from the middle to the edges to expel all remaining air;

    When all the elements are glued, you can acrylic paints make the background, complete the details.

All that remains is to cover it with several layers of glue and insert the mechanism. The clock is ready!

You will need a special varnish, it is applied to the primed base - the primer is also taken not white, but colored. After this, craquelure varnish is applied, which, when dried, cracks.
