Sew a children's frameless chair. DIY bean bag chair - a detailed master class for different types of chairs. Consider three common cuts

But what if you try to make something out of furniture with your own hands? Interesting? Let's start by making furniture that doesn't require a frame, such as from a bean bag chair (or, as it is also called, a pear chair).How to make a bag chair with your own hands at home? The key to a great result of your work is right from the start make patterns and find good filler. Choose the fabric (color, texture) according to your taste, not forgetting about the harmony of the future product in the shape of a pear with the rest of the furniture in the house.

Most important advantage such bean bag chairs self made in that it is light in itself and freely takes the form of the body of a person who wishes to rest on it. Therefore, it is very comfortable in it. You can even lie down on it, fluffing it up like a pillow. People who spend a lot of time “on their feet”, or sitting for hours in the office, perfectly relax and rest their back muscles when they sit in bean bags. And what a delight this furniture causes in children! Be sure to take your child to help when you start making a bag chair with your own hands.

The next important point is filler. The most popular of them now is polystyrene chips, the granules of which are 1.5-5 mm. If you use it as a filler, then you will never sit in a “cold” chair. This applies specifically to the crumbs, and not to the foam plates.

As an option - order crumbs in an online store (cheap and fast). And with the rest you can fill it with decorative pillows and soft children's toys.

It will be great fill chair bags not traditional polystyrene foam, but, for example, hay soaked in the aroma of a hot summer or some kind of odorous grass. You just need to keep in mind that such fillers love rooms without high humidity. Such a filling changes every 6-12 months, if products from it are used a lot and often. Therefore, the bag itself should be easily removed for replacement of the filler.

One of the covers that make up the bean bag chair (or pear chair), should be made of raincoat fabric or thick mattress fabric, the second cover should be their beautiful furniture fabric or jeans, suede, artificial leather and even velvet. You should not use expensive fabric for the outer cover, because with cheaper fabric, the cover can be changed as much as you like, and each time you will have a “new” chair. So it’s worth considering whether it is necessary to pay in online stores for the super-abrasion-resistant fabric advertised by them, if we have an option with inexpensive, but different and always “fresh” covers?

On the outer cover of the bag chair, they usually put a strong metal zipper 50-60 cm long. The best place its location is at the bottom of the chair, otherwise it may break, in case of excessive load on the chair. If you don't like the zipper, sew on a few buttons.

Turning on fantasy, you can vary bag chair from a very large pillow to a comfortable mattress; it can be, as it were, an armchair with a back, if you put the pillow in a triangle, and a comfortable mattress.

Before you start directly working on the manufacture of the product ( upholstered furniture), we recommend doing small pattern on paper scaled to see if everything fits.

The seams on the covers must be strong, the same as on jeans, using reinforced threads in order to withstand heavy loads.

  1. Pattern on millimetric paper. First, draw a trapezoid on graph paper. The size of the future frameless chair will depend on it, so here you have to decide for yourself. To make it easier for you to navigate, you can start from the following example of making a chair.
  2. Sidewalls. Let the height be 100 cm, the lower base 60 cm wide, the upper base 24 cm. Next, you need to determine the center of the drawn trapezoid: step aside from the middle (towards the base opposite) 2.5 cm. The next step is to connect the marked point to the ends of the side lines , you need to do this by drawing smooth lines. Thus (if you do everything right), you will get a pair of semicircles, they should go inside the trapezoid, forming a wedge. According to the wedge drawn on graph paper, attaching the fabric, cut out the necessary segments. Sidewalls for a frameless chair are ready.
  3. Top and bottom of a frameless chair. For the following steps, you will need a compass. With it, draw a couple of circles, the diameter of one of them should be 24 cm, for the second you should take 60 cm. This way you will get patterns for the top of the easy chair, as well as for the bottom. When cutting fabric according to the drawn patterns, one should not forget that extra centimeters of material will go to the seams when sewing.

In order for the finished bag chair not to be smaller than the planned dimensions, when cutting the fabric, it is necessary to leave allowances of at least 1.5 cm on each side.

As you understand, each element of the pattern must be cut out twice, since the bag chair consists of two covers. Accordingly, it is necessary to use two different fabrics for cutting.

The bottom and neck should be cut off from it, making a kind of connecting tube. Insert one end of the tube into the inner cover of the chair, wrap it with tape. The other end is placed in a bag with polystyrene balls and also fixed with tape. Check that there are no gaps left, and the balls do not start to spill out. Slowly pour the filler through the connecting tube from the bag into the case.

When all the balls are in the case, the master class on making the chair can be considered over. Now it remains to fasten the zipper or sew up the inner cover, put the top cover on it, sit in the finished pear chair and relax.

To sew a chair, you have to cut 12 or 20 parts (depending on the size you want to get). Leave 1.3 cm for allowances on each side.

  1. Treat the edges of the fabric cuts from fraying using an overlock, zigzag stitch or piping.
  2. We chop off the processed parts with pins and only after that we begin to sew. In this way, the pattern will be avoided.
  3. Lightning in one face will not fit in you, so place it with a “snake” between the two parts.

  • fabric base;
  • 2-3 zippers;
  • filler;
  • tailor's scissors;
  • millimeter paper;
  • pencil;
  • ruler or tape measure;
  • strong threads for sewing;
  • sewing machine.

The choice of material for the cover

For the outer cover, a durable, wear-resistant, dirt-resistant, waterproof, eye-pleasing fabric is purchased. In accordance with the design of the premises and the functional purpose of the product (for home, summer cottage, gazebo), choose:

  1. Oxford;
  2. flock;
  3. thermo jacquard;
  4. scotchguard;
  5. microvelveteen;
  6. eco-leather, etc.

Oxford is a synthetic raw material, covered with polyurethane on the wrong side to protect it from dust and dirt. The composition is durable, waterproof, elastic, resistant to temperature changes, represented by a wide palette of colors. The fabric is practical, budget, does not require ironing, it is easy to wash, clean with a damp sponge.

The outer cover for the chair is made of thermo jacquard. The material is durable, different original combinations shades, use of ornaments. Heat treatment technology involves applying paint to the finished fabric. Raw materials are hypoallergenic, because. contains up to 65% cotton. Only suitable for interior spaces and gazebos.

Velor has a velvety surface, is durable, retains its shape, wear-resistant, does not wrinkle. The material is made from natural raw materials or synthetic.

Flock combines raw cotton and polyester. The material is durable, high quality, with a smooth texture, easy to clean.

Microfiber is composed of polyester and polyamide, breathable, wear-resistant, impact-resistant chemical substances, aesthetic, easy to care for and wash.

Microvelvet is suitable for using the chair at home. The material is of high quality, available in plain or with a graphic ornament. The fabric is made from cotton and elastane.

Artificial suede refers to furniture fabrics, made from polyamide fiber, is resistant to abrasion, color fastness, easy care, a wide palette of shades.

Eco-leather is a dense wear-resistant material, retains the surface structure, is optimal for modern design. In the creation of raw materials, cotton and polyurethane are used (as a protective coating).

It is possible to use improvised materials. For country house optimal bean bag chair from old jeans, raincoat fabric.

The fabric for the inner cover must be strong, with a dense section of threads, breathable. Optimum spunbond, coarse calico, satin, polyester, etc.

Filler selection secrets

Before filling the bean bag, it is important to determine the composition of the raw materials for a product that fits perfectly into the interior. The service life and functionality of the furniture depend on the quality of the filler.

To create the internal volume of the product, apply:

  • expanded polystyrene;
  • Styrofoam;
  • holofiber;
  • shavings, woolen threads;
  • different types of cereals (buckwheat, rice);
  • dried herbs, etc.

Expanded polystyrene is produced in the form of circles, the material is practical, hygienic, does not retain odors, has thermal insulation qualities, is non-hygroscopic, affordable, hypoallergenic, does not absorb moisture. When choosing, experts recommend primary processing granules (they differ in a round shape, they are made from foaming polystyrene). The granules of the second stage of production are not symmetrical, quickly become unusable, shrink.

Polypropylene granules are durable, strong, allow the chair to keep its shape, and have shock-absorbing qualities. However, it is necessary to take into account the low resistance to fire.

Foam polyurethane elastic, hypoallergenic, retains its shape. The granules of the material are dense, therefore they are used in chairs sheathed in artificial leather, jacquard.

Styrofoam for stuffing is produced in the form of small balls. The material is light, budget, has a slight shrinkage, comfortable, soft texture, density. The shape of the foam balls is retained for a long time, but with prolonged use, the rigidity of the composition increases. It is recommended to add foam rubber or holofiber to the material.

Hollofiber particles are added to the fillers as a softening additive. The material is hypoallergenic, breathable and does not absorb moisture. The sizes of granules of different compositions must match in size.

What is filled with an easy chair depends on the operating conditions. It is important to consider compliance temperature regime and humidity. When using natural raw materials (cereals, sawdust, grass, etc.), it is necessary to maintain a warm temperature, avoid moisture, because raw materials can be damaged by mold.

How much filler is needed depends on the dimensions of the bag and the weight of the citizens who will use the piece of furniture. Many materials are sold in packs of 100 kg. About 400 liters of raw materials are needed to fill a chair with a size of 120 * 90 cm. During operation, it is necessary to add 40-50 liters in 2-3 weeks.

Master class on making a soft bag

Before sewing a bag chair with your own hands, you need to determine the dimensions, model configuration, and prepare a drawing.

The stages of product manufacturing also include:

  1. cutting elements;
  2. fitting of parts, sweeping;
  3. chair tailoring;
  4. ironing;
  5. filling covers.

Creating a pattern

The pattern for the chair is created taking into account the size, model of the piece of furniture. Standard schemes are used or author's ones are developed. You can make a pattern for the customer. Patterns are made taking into account seam allowances in accordance with the proportions.

Enlarged elements are transferred to a sheet of special paper (millimetric), cut out, laid out on a fabric base. It is recommended to place templates with dimensions on the fabric economically, taking into account the direction of the fabric section. Experienced craftsmen can make a bean bag chair according to a pattern on a finished fabric basis.

Cover tailoring

After cutting the details, we sew covers. 2 pear-shaped blanks are created. The parts are connected with pins, then it is necessary to sweep the seams of the sidewalls. Sew the elements manually or on sewing machine. Parts of the structure are then smoothed with a steam iron.

Side seams are sewn on the main cover, edge wedges and connecting seams are folded and overcast. It is necessary to allocate about 40-50 cm for adding a zipper.

The inner cover is sewn in stages, up to 35 cm must be left under the zipper. The seams are ironed, treated with an overlock. Zippers are inserted into the segments, they are swept, adjusted, stitched on a sewing machine. It is necessary to make a handle that is attached to the long edge, ironed.

The blanks of the covers must be turned out on the front surface, smoothed. The top element is tucked into the bag and sewn on. The bottom is sewn into the covers. After work, the product is ironed.

Backfill filler

Before pouring the filler into the chair, you need to calculate the volume of raw materials. A package of at least 500 liters is required. The model has a fabric sleeve (width and height of 50 cm), closed with a zipper or an additional cover.

An open bag with raw materials is placed in the hole, carefully stuff the bag. The granules are light in weight, so the work is recommended to be performed by 2 people. An important point is a strong electrification of the material, requiring moistening of the granules with water from a spray bottle.

With a narrow opening in upholstered furniture, it is necessary to use a plastic bottle with a narrowed part. The neck and bottom of the dishes are cut off. The edge of the plastic container is lowered into a bag with granular material, fixed with a fishing line. The other edge of the dishes must be lowered into the chair cover, secured with tape or rope, then pour the granules.

Finished product care

When cleaning fabric base soft chair, it is important to consider the processing method:

  • cotton-based materials must be washed;
  • dense compositions (eco-leather, suede) are processed with a moistened cloth;
  • the chair and cover made of flock are recommended to be cleaned with a dry method;
  • when choosing the temperature mode of washing (cool, warm), the type of fabric base is taken into account.

The design of the furniture has no shape, therefore, over time, it loses volume (the granules are deformed, compacted). It is necessary to add new raw materials, mixing with the former. It is forbidden to place the product near heating appliances.
