Bag chair from an old pillow pattern. Detailed instructions on how to sew a bean bag chair with your own hands. Caring for a frameless chair

A soft and cozy chair will become an indispensable entertainment for your children. After all, such a chair does not have sharp corners and takes any body shape.

Necessary materials
- Fabric (breathable, dense) double thread (3 meters).
- Plastic zipper.
- Fabric (thick) Oxford. Black - 2.5 meters, white - 1 meter, and orange - 50x50 cm.
- Filler (expanded polystyrene) (200 liters). Can be purchased at a hardware store.
- Sewing machine.
- Threads, needles.
- Velcro (10-20 cm).

Manufacturing

Sew the outer cover

1. Cut out 6 side parts from black fabric and double-thread fabric. They will serve as our inner and outer cover. The side parts should be pear shaped. They are larger at the bottom and smaller at the top.

2. Cut out the bottom from the same fabrics. The bottom should be larger than our lid.

3. Cut out the lid from the same materials. In order for our parts to fit together, we need to make it hexagonal in shape.

P.s. The edges of the hexagon should be equal to the top and base of the pear.

4. Cut out the tummy for our penguin from white fabric. And we sew it with black fabric.

6. Then we sew the side parts and the tummy to our zipper.

7. Cut out 4 paws from orange fabric and sew them together.

8. Cut out the eyes. To do this, take a white cloth and cut out a figure eight from it irregular shape, and then two small, black circles. They also need to be connected.

9. Cut out the nose, two triangular areas. We also sew the two parts together. We sew the nose to our tummy, and sew the eyes on top of the nose.

10. We also cut out the wings from fabric, 4 triangular areas, and sew them to our body.

P.s. Before sewing the orange fabric and wings, you need to fill them with cotton wool or polystyrene foam.

After all the steps, we should have an outer cover like this.

Sew the inner cover

It needs to be sewn so that our small polystyrene foam balls do not fall apart.

11. It is sewn in exactly the same way as the outer cover. In addition to attaching the bottom.

12. We will make the bottom with Velcro to fill the cover. We cut the bottom into two parts, the first part should be smaller than the second. We attach our Velcro to both parts, overlapping the parts on top of each other.

While planning to do a master class on sewing the now popular bean bags, or bean bag chairs, I realized that the main difficulties for those who decide to sew themselves a bean bag chair arise with the selection of material.

I won’t explain here what a bean bag chair is, also known as a bean bag; there have already been such publications at the Fair.

In short, bean bag consists of:

  1. External cover
  2. Inner cover
  3. Fillings in the form of polystyrene foam granules.

That is for self-made bean bag we need:

1. Fabric for the outer cover of the chair

2. Fabric for the inner cover of the chair

3. Filling

  1. Strong threads
  2. Long zipper

Let's take a closer look at each point.

Fabric for outer cover. Which one can be used and where can I get it? There are many options. The most inexpensive, and perhaps quite available material- Oxford. Fabric reminiscent of a jacket. Tents and various tourist gadgets are made from similar fabric. Usually comes with waterproof impregnation. Found in fabric stores. It's inexpensive. Available in bright, solid colors. And it is often found with a protective, “military” print.

Bean bags made from this fabric are good if the chair is intended to be used, for example, outside, on the veranda country house. We had tablet poufs from Oxford for holding public events in nature. For the home, in my opinion, it is better to look for a more comfortable fabric.

Ideally furniture. Fabric used in the manufacture of standard sofas and armchairs. It is better to use plain fabrics: chenille, flock, microcorduroy.

I haven’t seen furniture fabrics in fabric stores, or they are sold in a very, very narrow assortment, and it’s impossible to find something worthwhile there.

You need to look for a company that deals wholesale sales furniture fabrics and supplies furniture production your city. As a rule, they all work for cash. True, not everyone cooperates with individuals. So you need to call and find out. And, as a rule, such companies agree to sell at least 1 meter of fabric.

Microvelvet, also called “Velvet LUX”, has a very large selection of solid shades, and the colors are very pleasant. The fabric is also not very expensive. It is cheaper to buy luxury corduroy at a wholesale price than to buy an oxford at a retail price. Another plus of this fabric is that its cover can be washed in washing machine. However, the manufacturer does not allow this. But I washed mine several times, for a year now, and nothing.

You can also look for faux leather, or as it is called “eco-leather,” and faux fur from suppliers of furniture fabrics. And all this at very reasonable prices! Again, fur and eco-leather are not for everyone. Eco leather is good in office rooms, For example.

You can combine eco-leather and fur.

There is also such furniture fabric as faux suede:

As a bonus, you can also ask furniture fabric suppliers for fabric samples; you can use them to create a lot of things.

And very cool bean bags are made from dense printed fabrics, such as tapestry, gabardine, twill. The density is similar to jeans. They are the hardest to find. The chairs look interesting and bright.

You can also take a closer look at curtain fabrics: the choice is much easier, and due to the large width (usually 2.8-3m), you won’t need much fabric at all.

You can find interesting fabrics all at Ikea. You just need to look at which ones are dense and which ones are not. The following chairs were made from IKEA fabrics:

Advice: go through the showrooms with upholstered furniture. All showrooms have fabric samples for choosing upholstery. At the top of the sample there is usually the name of the factory and the website. On the back of the fabric is the name and shade that you need to remember. Next, you can contact the factory, go to their website, find the nearest representative who may sell you the fabric you need.

Yes, an ordinary household sewing machine generally sews furniture fabrics quite well. Faux leather and fur are a little more complicated.

Fabric for the inner cover of the chair. Many manufacturers use dense spunbond. Ideally with small holes for ventilation. This material cheap and therefore widely used. Sold mainly in rolls. Find the meter of spunbond required density hard enough. If you use loose spunbond, the product may come apart.

Therefore, it is better to use fabric for the inner cover. The fabric should be:

  • dense, at least 130-150 g/m;
  • breathable, otherwise the balls inside will “stick together”.

Take a closer look at fabrics for workwear, such as medical ones - relative availability and reasonable price.

Chair filler. Expanded polystyrene granules are used as filler. Only balls, no crumbs or waste! Buy from manufacturers or online. The granules are very light (weight depends on density; granules with a density of 15 are usually sold: 1000 liters weighs about 15 kg), so delivery by mail will not be very expensive.

The smaller the balls, the better. Ideally 1-2 mm, 3-5 mm is not bad.

A large bean bag will take 300-400 liters, depending on the pattern. And it’s better to immediately take a reserve, about 100-150 liters, since granules tend to “sag” over time and decrease in volume. 100-150 liters is enough for an ottoman.

You will also need lightning: for the outer cover it is long so that it is possible to remove the cover, for the inner one it is short enough. Rolled zippers No. 5 work well.

Threads must be durable. Otherwise, the product will quickly tear at the seams! Regular threads#40 will not fit. We used #70 thread. The thread should be difficult to tear with your hands, or not break at all.

And one more small “trifle” - blocks. Needed if non-breathable fabric is used for the outer cover, or in decorative purposes. Can be put in the studio. You can do without them.

Here, in short, I told you what I knew. I apologize for some of the photos. I hope my publication will be useful to someone!

What if you try to make something out of furniture with your own hands? Interesting? Let's start by making furniture that doesn't require a frame, for example: from a bean bag chair (or, as it is also called, a pear chair).How to make a beanbag chair with your own hands at home? The key to an excellent result of your work is to do it right from the start make patterns and find good filler. You select the fabric (color, texture) to your liking, not forgetting the harmony of the future pear-shaped product with the rest of the furniture in the house.

The most important advantage such bean bags self made the fact that it itself is light and freely takes the shape of the body of a person who wishes to rest on it. Therefore, it is very comfortable. You can even lie down on it, fluffing it up like a pillow. People who spend a lot of time “on their feet”, or sitting for hours in the office, perfectly relax and rest their back muscles when they sit in bean bag chairs. And what delight this furniture causes in children! Be sure to take your child as an assistant when you start making a bean bag chair with your own hands.

The next one is quite a lot important pointfiller. The most popular of them now is polystyrene chips, the granules of which are 1.5-5 mm. If you use it as a filler, then you will never sit in a “cold” chair. This applies specifically to crumbs, and not to foam plates.

As an option, order crumbs from an online store (cheap and fast). And with the rest you can fill decorative pillows and soft children's toys.

It will be great fill chair bags not with traditional polystyrene foam, but, for example, with hay soaked in the aroma of hot summer or some fragrant grass. You just need to keep in mind that such fillers love rooms without high humidity. This filling is changed every 6-12 months if products made from it are used a lot and often. Therefore, the bag itself should be easily removable to replace the filler.

One of the covers that makes up a bean bag chair (or pear chair), should be made of raincoat fabric or thick mattress fabric, the second cover should be made from beautiful furniture fabric or denim, suede, faux leather and even velvet. You should not take expensive fabric for the outer cover, since with cheaper fabric the cover can be changed as much as you like, and each time you will have a “new” chair. So it’s worth thinking about whether we need to pay in online stores for the super abrasion-resistant fabric they advertise, if we have the option of inexpensive, but different and always “fresh” covers?

A strong metal zipper 50-60 cm long is usually placed on the outer cover of the bean bag chair. The best place its location is at the bottom of the chair, otherwise it may break if there is excessive load on the chair. If you don't like the zipper, sew on a few buttons.

By turning on your imagination, you can vary bag chair from a very large pillow to a comfortable mattress; it can be like a chair with a back, if you arrange the pillow in a triangle, and a comfortable mattress.

Before you begin directly working on the manufacture of the product ( upholstered furniture), we recommend doing small pattern on paper to scale to check if everything fits.

The seams on the covers must be strong, the same as on jeans, using reinforced threads in order to withstand heavy loads.

Next article.

In order to sew a chair bag you will need about 4.6 m of dense and lining fabric, 2 zippers no shorter than 56 cm, as well as polystyrene or other granules of at least 1.8 cubic meters.

Pear chair pattern, more precisely, one of the six segments of the bag is shown in the diagram, one with adult sizes, the other reduced in size for the convenience of the child. In order to simplify the calculations, you can use graph paper or other squared paper; on such material you can easily transfer the diagram only if the scale is observed.

As a result, the pattern for an adult chair will have the following dimensions: length 105 cm, maximum width 54 cm.

To create the top of the chair, fold the paper in half and then make a mark in the middle of the fold line. Next, you need to draw a circle with a radius of 14 cm.

To create a pattern for the base of the chair, as when creating a drawing for the top, you can use paper folded in half, but a circle should be drawn with a radius of at least 30.5 cm. Next, the resulting circle should be expanded and, stepping back 1.3 cm from the fold line, draw 1.3 cm parallel line. After which the circle is cut along this line, and the pattern of the base will be the smaller part of the circle.

As a result of cutting you should have:
- six wedges made of fabric for the cover and the same number cut from lining fabric;
- one upper part of lining fabric and one of fabric for the cover;
- two parts of the base, cut from fabric for the cover, and also two from lining fabric.

How to sew a chair bag- the answer to this question is quite simple! First, you need to sew the base parts together, and insert a zipper between the two base parts. Next, you should connect the side wedges together with the right sides inward. When all the parts are connected to each other, the product must be ironed, not forgetting to carefully smooth the seams. After which the bag can be filled with polystyrene or other granules.

There you have it, a beautiful hand-sewn pear-bag chair!

Happy sewing!

Furniture can be different: upholstered and framed, beautiful and comfortable, necessary and loved, white and red... And sometimes also frameless. We first saw cool, unusual chairs in the Comedy Clab program. Previously, such baggy furniture was not striking. But thanks to the popular TV show, everyone became envious and urgently wanted the same ones for themselves!

TO today I have already sewn quite a few of these bags myself. And then we looked everywhere, where possible, for at least one, to rip it open, and see what was inside there after all! A real odyssey about twelve chairs! We filled the cases that we designed ourselves with everything! Sintepon, pieces of foam rubber, wool... everything was wrong! It seems to be soft, but this characteristic elastic and lively effect is not there!

A whole year passed until it was no coincidence that friends who came from Italy discovered such a chair. It was so beautiful, huge and silver that my hand couldn’t raise it to cut it. Yes, this was not necessary. The cover, it turns out, has a zipper. And inside there is another case. And in that case there are tiny peas. What would you think, of course, foam! Darkness and darkness of cute white balls. Who would have guessed that they simply have an unbearable character? But more on that later.

DIY frameless furniture is incredibly convenient, comfortable and beautiful. After sitting and lying on such a chair, we can greatly relax our back, and our entire body. Children and animals simply adore these stunning chairs. And it all started with a curiosity. And, of course, in the birthplace of design - Italy. In the sixties of the twentieth century, young designers Cesare Paolini, Franco Teodoro and Piero Gatti came up with a punk movement called “Anti-design”.

The guys created absolutely crazy furniture. Including chairs without frames. In bags from transparent fabric PVC poured colored water. These works resembled huge bags of kefir. Such furniture at design exhibitions looked very scandalous, of course. But I just looked. It was impossible to operate it. The water itself is very heavy, and the fabric simply tore under its weight.

But Italy is the birthplace not only of artists, but also of adventurers. Industrialist Aurelio Zanotta had business sense. He liked the crazy idea, and after thinking about it, he made his own changes, which made the bags practical armchairs. Aurelio replaced PVC with durable fabric, and water with polyvinyl chloride foam balls. And already in 1968, his newly founded company “Zanotta” launched bright pink drop bags, weightless and incredibly comfortable.

Сonfortevole da morire, as the Italians like to say, “deadly comfortable.” These chairs were called “Sacco” - a bag. Incredible pink bags immediately won many awards at exhibitions, the largest museums in the world such as MoMA, Metropolitan, and many others. The brilliant Aurelio became rich, and the Zanotta factory still produces frameless furniture, which sells all over the world with a bang. Like all the other beautiful furniture they produce. By the way, the world’s first inflatable chair “Blow” was also born at this factory.

In 2008, the Zanotta factory celebrated its fortieth anniversary. A collection of hand-painted Saccos was released for the holiday famous artists and designers. She was destined trip around the world and then sold at auction. The French channel Arte made a whole film dedicated to ageless bags. These are the consequences of the friendship of three young designers! By the way, I never found out what their further fate was.

So wonderful bright mattresses carry the energy of blossoming and breakthrough. Why don't we have these? The original costs about 600 euros. Native Ukrainian fake - more than a thousand hryvnia. But wait! Italians are not all so brilliant and handy. For the most part, they do not like to tinker with anything (let alone, by the way, repair and repair) with their own hands. They prefer to earn and buy. Otherwise the world would be overpopulated with Mikkelangelos and Leonard Davincis.

But we are different! We were given golden hands from birth! Our craftswomen figured out a long time ago how to make such charming furniture at home. Of all the tools you need, the only thing you need is a sewing machine. No hammers, drills, or outside help needed. You can easily build one chair in one evening. After a week of work, DIY frameless furniture will be a wonderful gift for all relatives and friends.

Now we will decide on the model and get started. To date, such models frameless furniture :

This beauty also varies in size: for adults and children, larger and smaller. But there are no strict standards. The sewing principle is the same for everyone. The only difference is in the pattern of the model.

Components of furniture

So, any frameless chair consists of two covers: internal and external. Both are zippered. Outer case maybe made of eco-leather (a word promoted by advertising, in fact it is ordinary furniture dermantine). This surface is easy to clean and always looks bright and elegant. But sitting on it in the summer with bare legs means sticking. You can also use any fabric, preferably furniture fabric - they are much stronger. For example, fleece, you can use raincoat fabric, cotton fabric, any light and durable one. Natural fabric feels better on the body, but it wears out faster. In general, think that in the end, sewing a new cover instead of a worn one is not a problem.

Inner case can be sewn from furniture non-woven fabric or simple lining fabric. It is the same in shape as the outer one. AND filling- balls of polyvinyl chloride, that is, polystyrene foam.

Foam granules are very harmful. It’s impossible to put them in a ready-made case! In law static electricity the balls fly up, then down to the sides, and finally stick to everything. A very beautiful sight, but I don’t recommend repeating it. For the rest of your life you will be picking out nasty granules from all sorts of places. I have developed two methods for pushing harmful balls inside the case.

First: sew a long zipper, for example a meter, into the inner case. Then you can push the whole bag into it, cut it inside, and take it out, but the balls will remain inside. Second: make a large paper funnel and pour the crumbs through it. Then there is no need for a long zipper. Paper also removes static electricity.

Previously, this miracle could only be purchased at construction stores in big bags. Now that frameless furniture is mass-produced, there are special granules packaged in one hundred liters. They cost from fifty hryvnia - according to the seller’s conscience. Don't let the volume scare you - the bag is almost weightless.

Types of frameless furniture

We start with the simplest patterns. First, let's make pillow. It looks like a triangular pyramid. Classic proportions of triangles: base - 110 cm, sides - 80 cm. But you can change the sizes without changing the proportions, to your liking. We cut it out, placing the parts on the fabric in the same way as in the photo.

Allow seam allowances of one and a half centimeters on each side. Sew the sides of the pyramid together. We process the sections with an overlocker if the fabric is loose. After sewing on the triangle that forms the base of the pyramid, we sew in a zipper. It is better to do this along the entire 100cm long edge.

We sew the outer cover in the same way. We stuff a bag of balls into the inner case and release them, filling the case two-thirds full. They need room to move so they can take shape when the chair is sat on. We take out the empty bag and fasten the zipper. We push the inner one into the outer one and fasten it. That's it, ready!

Armchair-pear consists of six wedges, a round bottom (bottom part 1 and 2, two parts each), and an upper hexagonal part. It is sewn exactly the same way as a pillow. the classic is also no less interesting. We cut out two side parts.

Pattern for mat chairs not needed at all. We sew two rectangles, width 120 cm, height 180 cm, don’t forget about the zippers. That's the whole case. Don’t forget that you don’t need to fill the case with balls to capacity, but only two-thirds full. Patterns flower chairs I don’t have one, I didn’t have to sew. But there is a picture that shows you how to sew. In fact, the entire flower is made of squares.

And finally, I’ll say, if you have adopted frameless furniture with your own hands, don’t throw away the remains of harmful balls. Over time, after about a year of daily use, the balls will shrink and become smaller in volume.

Then you will need to fill them up to the required volume. And you have just the right amount left!

I’ll also say, especially for fans healthy image life. I have never heard anyone complain about allergic reactions to frameless furniture. It is even very environmentally friendly.

Enjoy your holiday in chairs that take the shape of your body, chairs that know how to love, chairs born in the most beautiful country in the world!

The stores offer a large selection of different bean bags. But it’s much more fun and cheaper to sew such furniture yourself. A pattern will help you with this. It is absolutely easy to make a bean bag chair with your own hands. The main thing is to put in a little effort.

What is a bean bag chair?

It is also called bean bag. A bean bag chair is an amazing piece of furniture with a frameless design. It has an almost unique property. This furniture can take any shape. It can serve as a bed, chair, or regular chair.

Frameless furniture is made in the most fancy and unusual forms. Below we will discuss the 3 most common options. To make them easier to sew, a pattern will be provided. A bean bag can take the shape of a pear, a drop, or even

Material selection

To sew the product you will need 2 types of fabric. After all, a bean bag chair consists of an internal and external cover. Before choosing a material, decide on the model. Because each variety has its own pattern. It is better to sew a bean bag chair from whole pieces of fabric. That is why initially select a model and calculate required amount material.

The following materials can be used:

  • satin;
  • tissi (this kind of fabric is used for making workwear);
  • raincoat or mattress textiles;
  • polyester material (it is durable and does not allow water to pass through).

How much fabric is needed on average? For example, you chose the pear chair pattern. Beanbag in finished form will have the following dimensions: diameter - 90 cm, height - 120 cm. Such a design requires about 2.5 m of fabric, the width of which is 115-122 cm.

For the outer cover, choose a fabric that will harmoniously fit into your interior. The most commonly used materials are:

  • flock;
  • chenille;
  • artificial suede;
  • velours;
  • jacquard;
  • faux fur or leather;
  • tapestry.

Features of the cut

Your soft bean bag chair will last for many years. That is why the choice of upholstery fabric should be approached very carefully. In addition, it should be possible to remove the top cover for washing. To do this, be sure to sew in a zipper when sewing.

If the fabric chosen for the top cover does not allow air to pass through, then a special air valve must be provided. Otherwise, the chair may easily tear.

Product filler

This is another important point that should be decided before sewing a bean bag chair. After all, the peculiarity of the product lies precisely in the filler, which allows the frameless model to take any shape.

So, what should be inside the chair? The best filler is foamed polystyrene. This material is different long term service, does not become damp, and does not cause allergies.

Tools and materials

Regardless of the model you choose, you will need:

  1. Graph paper. It is necessary to create a pattern.
  2. Fabric for inner and outer cover.
  3. Lightning - 2 pcs.
  4. Pencil, ruler, chalk, scissors.
  5. Reinforced threads.
  6. Filler - for one chair you will need about 300 liters of filler. This volume weighs 1.5 kg (so do not buy 10 kg packs of polystyrene foam).
  7. Sewing machine.

Beanbag: “pear”

This model is very popular.

A master class will help you sew such a bean bag chair:

  1. Below is a pattern of the product. It must be transferred according to the dimensions. If necessary (if the chair is sewn for a child), you can proportionally reduce the pattern.
  2. We cut the material according to the prepared patterns. You should leave 1.5 cm for allowances. You should have 6 wedges of the main part, 2 of the bottom, 1 of the upper part. All parts for the outer case are ready.
  3. Repeat the procedure on the fabric selected for the inner cover.
  4. Parts need to be swept away. At this stage, you should consider the placement of the zipper. It is recommended to sew it into the lower part of the product. So she won't spoil it appearance models. There should be zippers on both cases. This will allow you not only to wash the upholstery in a timely manner, but also to add filler if necessary.
  5. Now we sew the parts together using sewing machine. All marks should be removed. To give the product strength, two lines should be laid. It is best to finish the edges with an overlocker.
  6. Now fill the inner bag with filler. This procedure is best performed without children or animals. Polystyrene balls can easily become electrified and can scatter throughout the room. They are very dangerous if they enter the respiratory system! If the balls do scatter, collect them with a vacuum cleaner. But to avoid this, it is recommended to pour the filler through a watering can, paper funnel or plastic bottle with a cut bottom.
  7. The bag should not be filled to capacity. Remember that the beauty of this design is that it adapts perfectly to the shape of the body. Therefore, the filler needs to be filled 2/3 full.
  8. Put on the top bag. Zip up. The soft bean bag chair is ready. You can enjoy your work.

Beanbag: “ball”

This model will not leave any young football player indifferent. But you will have to work hard with such a product. It is somewhat more difficult to sew than the “pear” model described above.

So, the “ball” bean bag chair is made in the following way:

  1. A completely different pattern is used for the model. You can use the one below or build your own. The pattern is a hexagon and a pentagon for a classic product.
  2. When cutting on fabric, it should be taken into account that there should be many such parts. Pentagons should be cut out - 12 pcs. And you will need 20 hexagons. It is very important to accurately cut and cut parts. Even the slightest deviation can cause the model to skew.
  3. Before starting to assemble the product, it is recommended to process all parts with an overlocker. It’s even better to decorate the cuts with edging. Of course, this will take a lot of time, but such details will definitely not fall apart.
  4. Now you need to sweep the product. Difficulties can arise with lightning. After all, the fastener simply won’t fit on one side. Therefore, the zipper should be positioned along a curve.

You already know how to sew a bean bag chair and put stuffing into it. Therefore, this procedure should not cause you any difficulties.

Beanbag: “drop”

This is another type of frameless furniture that may interest you.

The pattern below is transferred to graph paper. The “drop” bean bag chair is made as follows:

  1. The pattern below is transferred to graph paper.
  2. When laying out the parts on the fabric, be sure to take this into account. This will protect the model from skewing. For one cover you need: 2 sides, 1 bottom, 1 top.
  3. Now sweep away the pieces. Mark the zippers.
  4. Finish the edges and stitch according to the marks.
  5. Add filler. Close the zippers.

You have created a wonderful bean bag chair. And most importantly - exclusive and inexpensive.
