The main part of the house is the living room. It is this room that reflects the taste of the apartment owners, so it is important that everything in it looks stylish. Curtains are traditionally considered an attribute of comfort, so their choice is given Special attention. Let's learn how to sew beautiful curtains for the living room to make it look chic.

Before you start sewing a product, you need to decide on the type of textile. To do this you need to consider:

  • living room area;
  • lighting;
  • stylistics.

In the room with small area Curtains made of light textiles will look good. Dense models will make the window too heavy, so the space will seem even smaller. If it is planned that the curtains will perform only a decorative function, then best choice will become .

To the hall with big window openings Curtains made of thick material will fit perfectly, which, in addition to an aesthetic function, will also perform a practical one: protect the living room from too bright light. It is best to opt for:

  • linen fabrics;
  • velvet;
  • velor;
  • jacquard

Fabric color

When choosing the color of future clothing for windows, it is recommended to take into account its combination with the rest of the textiles in the room. The shade of the curtain should not contrast with the furniture upholstery. This rule can be broken if the room lacks color accents: in this case, the window decoration can be bright. A living room decorated in pastel colors needs patterned curtains or patterns with patterns.

Do not forget that the perception of space is determined by the choice of color: cold tones (violet, azure, blue, mint) will give depth to the living room, and warm shades (gold, milky, beige, ivory, red) will visually increase the area.

Influence of style on fabric choice

The choice of material for curtains in the interior of the hall is influenced by the design of the room itself. Each style direction has its own type of fabric that will complement the decoration of the room.

The influence of style on the curtain model

In order for the curtains to be combined with the style of the living room, you need to choose the right style, which will not only improve appearance windows, but which can be easily sewn with your own hands.

Living rooms in provencal style or country style are often decorated with straight curtains. The simple appearance of such a product will be brightened up various parts: ruffles, fringe, decorative tiebacks, lambrequins.

A hall designed in a classical style requires special window decoration. Refined Austrian or lush “” look interesting. In some decors, Roman or English curtains will look appropriate. For classic interior You can sew straight curtains, complementing them with a lambrequin.

How to sew curtains yourself

When choosing a type of window decoration, you need to take into account your degree of skill. To begin with, you should not choose complex models; it is better to come up with original decorative elements for it.

Straight curtains

Even a novice craftswoman can create such a model. At the first stage, you need to determine the dimensions of the future product: you need to measure the length of the cornice and the distance to the floor. To get neat folds, you need to take a piece of fabric whose width will be 2 times the length of the cornice.

When calculating the fabric, it is important not to forget about the allowances that will be used to form the seams. Usually leave 5 cm for the side parts, 15 cm for the bottom and top edges. After calculating the dimensions, you can buy fabric and start sewing.

Main stages of work on the product:

  1. The fabric must be moistened and ironed before cutting;
  2. A piece of fabric is laid out on a flat surface, the necessary fabrics for curtains are cut out;
  3. The fabric is ironed again and the seams are sewn;
  4. A curtain ribbon is sewn on top of the product;
  5. Form folds and hang the curtain on the cornice;

Important! If there is a window balcony door, then instead of curtain tape it is better to use eyelets. This will make the curtain easy to open and close.

Curtains with eyelets

One of the most common ways to decorate a window in a living room is curtains with rings. This drapery looks very beautiful. Thanks to even vertical folds, the ceiling visually looks higher and the window appears wider. This option is quite easy to create with your own hands, but you need to carefully calculate the dimensions of the material.

For curtains with eyelets, you need to take so much fabric that the width of the cut is twice the length of the cornice, otherwise you won’t be able to make straight folds. Each fabric has an even number of eyelets, the distance between which should be 15 cm. The gap from the edge of the curtain to the eyelet should be 6 cm. Leave 3 cm of fabric for the side hem, up to 18 cm for the bottom hem. To hem the top part, you need 4-5 cm, however, the diameter of the rings should be added (usually 2.5 cm greater than the diameter of the rod).

When choosing accessories, it is better to give preference to plastic eyelets! To secure metal rings you need special equipment, so it will not be possible to install the rings properly at home. In addition, plastic is affordable, it will not make noise when the insert moves along the cornice, and after washing the fabric will not deteriorate from interacting with it. Metal grommets often cause rust stains.

Progress:

Stage 1. They cut the material based on preliminary calculations. When cutting fabrics with a pattern, you need to pay attention to the fact that when connecting the curtains, the pattern also matches.

Stage 2. Hems are made, ironed and stitched. If the bottom of the fabric has already been processed, it is not folded.

Stage 3. Sealing material is glued or sewn to the top of the curtain. After this, the locations for the eyelets are marked using chalk. Holes are marked along the inner diameter of the rings, then they are cut out.

Stage 4. Insert the rings and snap them into place. The curtain is ironed again, then hung.

This type of curtain fastening is very popular; it can be used for any room, but ring curtains will look most advantageous in the living room.

How to sew curtains with a lambrequin?

This is a fairly simple design, which, despite its comparative ease of manufacture, looks truly chic. Lambrequins fit into most common interior styles, perfectly complement and organically complete them.

The first thing you need to do is pay attention to the choice of material. As a rule, housewives who decide on their own make all the design details from the same type of material. But no one forbids you to experiment. So, for example, to sew the main part, you can use a plain material, and make the lambrequin patterned, or vice versa. There are no special rules in this regard, it is only necessary that ready-made curtains fit well into the existing interior of the room.

Once the main material for the curtains has been selected, proceed to calculate the required quantity. The lambrequin usually accounts for a fifth or sixth of the total curtain length. Don't forget to leave extra for hems. Select the width taking into account the width of the window in the room. Think about whether folds are needed and how many there should be. It is better to mark in advance all the locations of the folds using braid.

At the first stage, you need to bend the upper part of the selected material and sew from it a kind of pocket for the curtain beam. The pocket should be slightly wider than the beam itself. Work this element with a reverse stitch.

Folds, if you want to make them, need to be secured with threads and carefully ironed. Before securing the folds, carefully sew the edges of the lambrequin. After this, the base for your DIY curtain will be ready. But that's not all. Efforts must be made to ensure that the lambrequin is truly original and unique. When choosing jewelry, be guided by the material used. For example, light fabrics are perfectly complemented with beads and organza flowers, while heavy fabrics are best decorated with fringe.

Sewing Roman blinds

In most cases, curtains of this type are sewn with the expectation that they will cover the window opening quite tightly, so the first thing you need to do is measure the window in the room. Add 5 cm to the measured width for allowances. You need to add 12 cm to the length.

Choose the fabric to your taste. There are many different options available for sale, so you can easily choose the one that best fits the interior of your room. Take the material, lay it out on the table and smooth it out thoroughly. Use tailor's chalk or a bar of soap to mark the lines of the hem and folds. After applying the necessary markings, you can begin hemming future curtains on the sides.

Next, you need to take a beam onto which you will later attach the Roman blinds you made yourself. Adhesive tape is nailed to the beam. The exact same tape must be attached to the top of the curtain. At this point the canvas will be attached to the block.

Carefully press and hem the bottom edge of the Roman shade, then sew on the trim. At the places where the slats are inserted, rings should be attached with wide stitches. Do all these tasks and attach the curtain to the bar. At this point the main stage of the work will be completed.

Finally, the cord is threaded into rings, carefully tightened, after which the remaining ends are cut off. Roman blinds are ready. You can hang them and enjoy the results. By the way, in Lately such curtains are often combined with lambrequins. It looks quite solid and makes the interior more expressive.

English style curtains

English curtains look airy and sophisticated. Curtains of this kind will decorate the room very well, adding some zest to its interior. IN self-production There is absolutely nothing complicated about these curtains. You only need to prepare satin, natural muslin and satin ribbon. When selecting the height and width of the curtains, take into account the dimensions of the window opening to be decorated. Be sure to leave a few centimeters for folds and hems.

Mark the places on the fabric where the satin ribbons will be sewn. To do this, you need to carefully pull out 2 threads from the fabric: one along the top edge, the second at a distance of 17 cm from it. Using the same scheme, you need to designate the places and directions of the horizontal ribbons.

Take the prepared satin ribbons, tuck both sides about 1 cm, carefully iron them and carefully hem them. Next, pin the ribbons to the main fabric using pins and carefully stitch them on the machine. In the gap between the fixed vertical stripes you need to place a couple more beautiful satin ribbons. Cover them with a satin strip of suitable width. Pin this strip to the main material using tailor's pins, focusing on the previously drawn threads. Finally, you need to secure the upper edges of the ribbons. The bottom edge is carefully hemmed and steamed.

Step-by-step instructions for sewing simple and beautiful curtains

If you don’t want any complex or too binding compositions, opt for simple curtains with cute bows. These curtains are best suited for the kitchen. They look unpretentious, but very beautiful. In addition to the curtains, you can add various details that will add a certain zest to the interior.

Choose fabric for curtains with a width equal to the width of the opening in the kitchen. Select the length at your discretion. You can make very short curtains, maybe up to the windowsill, or up to the floor. Additionally, you will need a narrow ribbon made of satin fabric and threads of a suitable color.

This curtain goes well with blinds, simple tulle and other simple materials. Decorations in the form of pastel bows will make the overall composition more fresh, delicate and interesting.

The fabric can be chosen at your discretion. Just remember that drapery various materials has its own characteristics. A plain cotton blend fabric is best suited for the kitchen. Materials of this type breathe well, creating a feeling of airiness and lightness in the room. Satin ribbon is used as a decorative element, preferably in a contrasting color. A combination of, for example, pink and gray, black and white, etc. looks great.

First you need to take a piece of fabric of a suitable size, lay it out on a flat horizontal surface and smooth it out thoroughly. After this, you need to baste the side edges and the bottom edge. Next, you should hem the top edge, taking into account the width of the cornice. Gather the side seams with thread. 5-6 stitches at a distance of 10-15 cm from each other are enough. After completing all these manipulations, all that remains is to hang the curtains on the curtain rod. To finish, you will need to throw a ribbon of satin fabric over the hanging curtain rod, pull it together and form beautiful decorative bows.

Sewing curtains with your own hands is a very real and not so difficult task. To make an ordinary curtain you do not need any special skills or long training. The main thing is to be able to sew, correctly calculate the required dimensions and choose the appropriate fabric. Moreover, a self-sewn product will become a real highlight in the interior of any room.

Measurements

Correctly taken measurements are the first and very important step to a successful result.

But you can sew such beauty yourself! Moreover, today on the Internet there is a large number of photos and videos with step-by-step instructions for sewing curtains

First, you need to measure the length of the cornice - this will be the basis for the width of the canvas. The length of the curtain can be up to the window sill, fall slightly beyond its line, not reach a couple of centimeters to the floor, touch the floor a little, or even lie on it.

  • technological allowances for processing the upper and lower edges - add 25 centimeters to the main length measurements;
  • When calculating the width, you need to decide whether it will be a straight curtain without folds or with drapery. Typically the drapery factor is two. That is, we multiply the length of the cornice by two, plus ten centimeters for processing the edges. It should be noted that this coefficient is suitable for dense and medium-density fabrics. For light materials (organza, silk, chiffon, taffeta) it is better to take a coefficient of three. You can check the degree of pliability of the material to drapery in the following way: take the folded fabric in your hand and lift it as high as possible. This way you can easily determine how much fabric is needed to form the desired folds.

It is better to always take a cloth with a reserve so as not to make a mistake. And the leftovers can always be used for sewing tiebacks or lambrequins.

It is correct to take measurements with a tape measure, since an ordinary centimeter is not practical in this matter.

We’ve decided on the measurements, now we need to choose the right fabric.

Choosing fabric

For curtains, it is better to take semi-synthetic fabrics. Natural materials They are known for their environmental friendliness, hypoallergenicity and, of course, look noble in the interior. But it should be noted that they quickly deteriorate under the influence sun rays, require special care. Also, natural fabrics shrink strongly after washing, so if you decide to use this option, be sure to add at least 50-60 cm to the calculated measurements.

The most durable are 100 percent polyester with the addition of cotton, as well as viscose. Satin, jacquard, velvet, calico, tapestry, taffeta are suitable for curtains. For tulle – chiffon, organza, veil.

Particular attention should be paid to calico. Calico curtains are very practical, environmentally friendly and provide good protection from sunlight and can withstand a large number of washes. However, when taking measurements, it should be taken into account that calico shrinks, so it is necessary to calculate the reserve.

Your choice should also be combined with the interior and style in which the room is designed. Each style is characterized by the use of certain panels, with an abundance or absence of decorative elements.

For small rooms with low ceilings, it is better to give preference to light or semi-dense materials.

When choosing color range it should be taken into account that dark colors visually reduce the space, light, pastel, on the contrary, expand. A horizontal pattern will visually expand the room, while a vertical pattern will create the effect of greater height.

What you will need

Before sewing curtains yourself, prepare:

  • textile;
  • a sewing machine (if you don’t have one, of course you can get by with a needle and thread, although this will require much more effort and time);
  • pins;
  • threads;
  • ruler, pencil, scissors;
  • sketch.

Let's get to work, open

And now you have already calculated the dimensions and prepared everything you need. Where to start the sewing process itself?

Initially, it is necessary to cut the fabric according to the prepared sketch. Before doing this, carefully inspect the canvas for defects and determine the front and back sides.

Some fabrics, especially natural ones, need to be special treatment to prevent the curtains from shrinking after washing. Typically, this process involves evenly dampening the fabric with a spray bottle, then ironing it through cheesecloth until completely dry. If there is a pattern, first perform these steps on a small piece of paper to check if it will fray. Be sure to iron the synthetics on the wrong side before cutting. Next, fold the product in half, right sides inward, edge to edge, and pin along the edges. Cut it into two parts according to your measurements. Then adjust each piece individually to the measurements and cut off the rest. From these leftovers it will be possible to later cut out details for decorating the curtains.

Cutting is the very first and no less important stage on the path to sewing curtains

Reveal the swag

Swag is a part of a lambrequin, which is a semicircle with folds. Usually the swag is cut at an angle of 45 degrees, which when folded gives a very beautiful fold. If there are drawings, then cutting at such an angle will not always work. In this case, cutting is carried out along the warp thread. It is very important to maintain proportions. The sag of the swag should be half its length along the eaves.

The swag pattern will look like a semicircle. Initially, you need to construct a right angle with a vertex. From it to the right we set aside half the size of the product, plus a couple of centimeters for finishing the edges. The second segment, equal to the depth of the product taking into account the drapery coefficient, is laid down. Using these data we draw a circle. After processing the edges, we grind the mounting tape.

When cutting, be sure to take into account the reserves that were previously calculated for processing the edges.

How to sew curtains?
