Until now, in the villages in the north and in the taiga zone, there are houses that seem to have come from a fairy tale. Their roofs are crowned with wooden sculpture depicting fantastic animals or birds, and the gutter hooks are exquisite works of art created by nature itself and only slightly worked by the hand of man.

Driftwood furniture is a unique and exquisite work of art, created by nature itself, and on which the hand of man has worked a little.

The furniture in the interior of such houses was once also exotically beautiful, each chair, bed or bench was unique, because it was created from what it was easiest for a peasant to find in a forest or near a field cleared of trees - stumps, snags and branches of an unusual shape .

Preparing driftwood for work

Depending on the place of collection of natural material, its preparation for the manufacture of furniture will vary:

Figures 1-3. Items and furniture from snags.

  1. On the shore of the sea or a lake with salt water, you can pick up a soaked and dried fin. This best material for any wood craft. Its processing consists only in cleaning it from contaminants and additional drying.
  2. In the water and on the banks of freshwater reservoirs, forest lakes and rivers, driftwood is found. Like the fin, the wood of such snags has been “treated” with water, there is no bark on them, and their color differs from the color of ordinary dry branches. One of the varieties of firewood is bog oak, possessing dark color wood and is considered the most durable material. Other species of trees will also be sufficiently resistant to the effects of time and atmospheric phenomena. The firewood extracted from the water is dried and cleaned of silt and other contaminants.
  3. Roots, trunks and branches of trees collected in the forest on clearings or left after garden work, are also suitable for creating furniture. Before use, it is desirable to sand them. Skinned snags are thoroughly cleaned of rotten and rotten places, removing loose layers to hardwood.

After pre-processing collected material, it is cut into pieces right size and suitable form. Individual elements adjust to each other, creating a pattern or using curved branches as headboards and chairs, armrests, legs and other furniture details.

Holes and grooves for fasteners are drilled in the right places, dowels or dowels are selected, which can be sawn from straight branches of the same tree. After everything is ready, you can proceed to the assembly.

Furniture manufacturing

It is best for a novice master to try to make small objects out of driftwood on their own. With the acquisition of skills in working with non-standard materials, it will be possible to move on to the manufacture of large-sized furniture and small architectural forms on the site.

  1. For the rack, you need to pick up 4 smoothly curved branches with a diameter of 3-6 cm, depending on the size of the product and a length equal to its required height. In addition to them, short straight segments will be needed to support the shelves and to form their planes. The length of the first parts will be equal to the desired depth of the rack, the length of the second - to its width. Shelf planes can also be made of plywood or thin boards.

A small rack for flowers is assembled on self-tapping screws, a more massive one - on dowels and glue (Fig. 1). Assembly begins with marking on long sections of branches of places for attaching supports under the shelves. The same parts will connect the racks in pairs. The distances between the crossbars are chosen as required for the needs that the rack will serve. Under the dowels, holes are drilled in the uprights and crossbars, a piece of a thin branch suitable in diameter and length is smeared with glue and inserted into the hole on the crossbar. The other end on the adhesive is placed in the corresponding hole on the rack. During assembly, the cross members are checked for horizontality using a level. Having built 2 "ladders", you can proceed to install the shelves on the support-crossbars: even sticks, boards or saw cuts of trunks are attached to the crossbars on self-tapping screws.

  1. To make a floor lamp, you will need a branch or tree trunk with a triple fork. If there is no way to find suitable material, the floor lamp stand is assembled from parts (Fig. 2). Temporarily fastening the legs, they achieve the stability of the structure, adjust the parts and make marks in the right places, so that later they can finally fasten everything. Assembly is carried out on self-tapping screws. For the wire in the upper end of the tripod stand, a hole 5-7 cm deep is drilled and perpendicular to it is made in the side of the driftwood. They thread the wire and install the threaded connector from the electrical kit for the floor lamp. Assemble the fixture of the lamp and lampshade, connect the wiring, screw the lamp.
  2. The lampshade for the floor lamp can be taken from the old table lamp or made from any materials, as fantasy tells. It can be made in the form of a nest or a ball of thin curved branches, snags of a suitable shape, etc.
  3. It is a little more difficult to make a chair and a table out of driftwood. For them, you will need to find such details from which it will be possible to assemble a stable base or make furniture legs. The seat and tabletop are usually a smooth saw cut of the trunk (Fig. 3).

The tabletop can also be made of glass, which will allow you to see through it the interweaving of branches or roots of driftwood.

After the base for the table or chair is assembled on the dowels, at the top of the structure it will be necessary to make a saw cut common to all parts in order to form a flat horizontal surface, solid or consisting of separate fragments, on which it will be possible to “plant” a seat or tabletop on dowels and glue.

  1. In the manufacture of the bed, a stronger tenon-groove connection will be required, additionally reinforced with a self-tapping screw of sufficient length. For it, a part of the wood is removed at the ends of a log or snag, a groove is selected in the appropriate place with a cutter head and a spike is inserted there. The self-tapping screw is screwed in the opposite direction to the spike through the drilled hole.

The headboards are assembled from snags of any shape you like, they are connected with thin logs desired length, forming a frame (Fig. 4). On inside longitudinal logs carve out a notch or strengthen the bar along the entire length to strengthen the bed with self-tapping screws. It can be made from standard bed slats or from planed boards placed across the frame. The plane of the bed must be aligned horizontally in order for the bed to be comfortable.

The style of the interior, which includes furniture made of snags and logs, created by craftsmen with their own hands, is called rustic. It will be most appropriate in a country house or in the country, because it involves the use of large branches and massive logs, it is usually performed in dark colors of antique-treated wood. This visually reduces the size of the room and is suitable for city apartments only in some cases.

The summer cottage for many of us is a place where you can fully relax, unwind and have fun.

The design provides for the allocation of a separate recreation area with benches, tables, benches and other garden furniture. However, you should not spend a lot of money on the purchase of expensive materials. garden furniture You can make your own with what you have on hand. These are various snags, hemp, trees or branches.

As a strong, massive and durable material for furniture, logs are perfect. They can be found in a forest plantation, processed a little and made a comfortable table or bench.

The main feature of furniture for summer cottages based on logs is the absence of costs. It is only necessary to cut the log into pieces with a chainsaw, clean it and process it with paint, varnish or stain.

Log furniture will suit any cottage interior, especially if your site is decorated in country style.

Only one minus is the delivery of logs to their destination. A thick log is quite heavy, you will need a truck or trailer for transportation.

An elementary solution is the manufacture of a stool, which can be decorated with patterns from parts of broken glass or dishes. Broken cups, saucers or ceramics are glued to the stump with liquid nails or epoxy.

From small stumps, lantern stumps are obtained. During the day, they decorate the garden and serve as a place to sit, and at night they illuminate the summer cottage. Thus, your territory will appear wider, and at the same time it will also become well lit. How to make such a firefly stump? It is necessary to carefully clean the saw cut of the stump, put an LED or fluorescent on it and close the structure with plexiglass, and then strengthen it with self-tapping screws.

If you know how to work with a chainsaw, we recommend creating chairs from stumps. They can be with backs if the stumps have a sufficient saw cut. A large stump is useful for making a chair with armrests.

Wooden boards and beams are the main material for construction work.

For the manufacture of garden furniture, simple branches, snags or tree roots are used. This so-called garbage allows you to create a real work of art.

At present, the works of folk craftsmen from snags and branches are quite expensive. Why don't you create such furniture on your own site? Such creations will be durable, beautiful and no worse than similar store furniture.

Before assembling furniture, it is necessary to remove the bark from branches and snags, dry the material well, otherwise it will begin to rot and insects will appear on it. Treat the tree with pesticides.

Fantasizing…

You will need:

Electric saw.

Everything is elementary and simple!

First, we clean the stump from the bark. Then we learn to work with an electric saw - we cut out the seat by 2/3 of the diameter, then from top to bottom - the back of the chair, the exclusive country chair is ready!

For the throne chair, draw a U-shaped outline on the saw cut of the tree and carefully saw it from top to bottom, to the intended seat. The width of the beaters and the back should be from 5 to 10 cm, depending on the dimensions of the stump. Then you should cut off a bit of the blade, to the desired height, so that when sitting on this chair, it would be comfortable for your hands to recline.

Show your imagination and give each such garden chair interesting shape. In conclusion - do not forget to carefully treat your chair with stain, varnish or paint of the desired color - so the throne will last much longer!

You will need:

  • Broken ceramics - plates, cups, etc.;
  • Epoxy glue or liquid nails;
  • Enamel paints of different colors.

A stump cleared of bark needs to be cut evenly and neatly. On this cut, using epoxy or liquid nails glue ceramic fragments from dishes with mosaics. Special talents can even lay out small mosaic compositions, which will make your stump stool especially exclusive and irresistible.

An interesting solution to the natural lighting of your garden at night will be luminous stump stools. To create them, take:

  • Plexiglas;
  • Fluorescent or LED;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • Screwdriver.

Carefully process the saw cut of the stump, put a fluorescent on the saw cut or put an LED. Carefully lay the plexiglass on top, with holes already drilled around the edges. Using self-tapping screws, firmly attach the structure to the stump. That's all - the stumps glowing in the night are ready!

Log furniture is particularly strong and durable. Tables and benches made of logs will serve faithfully for more than one generation of your descendants! The main thing is to properly process this material.

Do not forget to always and everywhere clean logs and various wood blanks from bark! This is one of the guarantees of the durability of the product. Again, do not forget about various antiseptic substances that can destroy various microorganisms that contribute to wood decay.

Thoroughly clean the finished bench or table, make the surface smooth. After our most fantastic ideas come true in the form of luxurious pieces of furniture, do not forget about the protective coating layer for wood - paint varnishes.

When choosing varnishes and paints, give preference to those that are intended for OUTDOOR work. Since wood quickly absorbs both varnishes and paints, before painting, treat the wood again with stain, drying oil in several layers, or still with varnish and paint, but also in 3-4 layers. Now your furniture composition will stand for decades!

As for WHERE you can find logs, the answer is simple - forests, gardens, parks ... there is a lot of material and places, the costs are minimal, the effect of such furniture is grandiose!

First, YOU MADE IT YOURSELF!
Secondly, they saved on expensive building materials.
