What is a round log and what is it used for?

How are log rounding machines arranged?

  • Positional type machines are divided into turning and rotary-cylindrical.
  • Lathe-cylindrical is a large lathe with a wooden blank length of up to 7 meters or more and a raw log diameter of up to 500 mm or more. Design features of the machine

The operation of the equipment is similar to semi-automatic lathes equipped with a milling head. Automation is provided within a cycle - one approach, during the implementation of which the equipment performs an operation according to the specified parameters. To change actions and control cutting tool operator involvement is required.

The design of the machine has the following components:

  • Supports and railroad track.
  • Equipment rails - lifting and moving mechanisms.
  • Drive and supply of the cutting tool.
  • Front and rear headstock.

The operating parameters for wood processing depend on the type of rock, the state of moisture and freezing of the material, and the thickness of the workpiece. The speed of rotation of the log and the feed of the cutter are subject to adjustment.

The principle of operation of the equipment

Processing of wood blanks is carried out by moving the drive and feeding the finishing or spherical cutters along the log installed on the rail track. The cutting element is fed manually. A finishing cutter is used for longitudinal excavation of material, the spherical shape of the tool is used for milling crown cups.

The wood blank is given rotation or rigid fixed fixation. The position depends on the type of operation. Static fixation is used for cup selections and compensation cuts. Rotational movements are given to the log only when the workpiece is cylindered simultaneously with rigid fasteners.

The mechanism of action of the machine is built on:

  • rotational or stationary state of the log blank;
  • translational and rotational movement of the cutter.

During cylindering, the accuracy of the given size is achieved, the curvature of the product is eliminated. The processing of the workpiece is carried out according to the axis of the product, taking into account the following features:

  • The workpiece is installed with a butt (thickened part) to the headstock to prevent extreme layer removal.
  • The translational movements of the cutter are carried out in the direction from the front to the tailstock.

The accuracy of the log cylindering is ensured by rigid fixation of the head and tailstocks and the coaxiality of the fasteners. Obtaining the required product size is achieved in several approaches.

Cylinder operation

In the cylindering operations, a constant rotation of the workpiece is set, fixed in the centers of the stocks, and the cutter is moved along the length of the log. The workpiece is located on the lever lifts from the front to the tailstock. Before starting work, the rail is brought to the headstock.

In the course of work, the following operations are performed:

  • supply close workpiece to the headstock;
  • installation of the workpiece in the centers of the headstock and tailstock in the form of a rigid fastener by adjusting the screws of the rear latch;

Mounting groove - a longitudinal recess on the workpiece, which simplifies the pairing of logs when installing finished products. The difference between the operation of grooving and cylindering is the processing of the workpiece in a fixed position. Sampling operations are carried out in the following order:

  • retracting the rail to the position of the headstock;
  • installation of a log in the centers of headstock with fixation from rotation;
  • adjustment of the horizontal position of the cutter to the processed surface of the log;
  • the task of the cutter parameters in a size smaller than the diameter of the workpiece;
  • turning on the cutter drive;
  • sampling by manual translational movement of the moving cutter with the help of the rack handle.

The parameters of the groove (depth, width) after excavation are unchanged throughout the entire length of the log.

The operation of sampling crown cups

The presence of crown cups facilitates the installation of the structure. Their creation is carried out after cylindering and grooving. Milling cups requires the following sequence:

  • fixing the workpiece on the rails using the brake;
  • drawing a graphic mark of the cup;
  • alignment of the center of the cutter and the planned excavation;
  • turning on the drive of the working tool;
  • directly excavation of the material by moving the cutter by the handle down.

Before carrying out the excavation, the task of flying out the cutter knives set to a single radius is required. In the process of working with spherical cutters, the positions of the knives are checked at least 2 times per shift and before the start of operation of the equipment.

Installation of equipment

The reliability and productivity of the machine is ensured by a technically competent installation. Installation of equipment is carried out taking into account the mandatory requirements:

  • To install the machine, parallel bars or a concrete base without pouring the rails are used. The place is protected by a canopy from precipitation.
  • Equipment power supply connection according to specifications. The inclusion in the operating mode is allowed after phase control and grounding.
  • Balancing rail tracks by level in horizontal and vertical directions.
  • Ensuring the alignment of the rear and front headstock.

In production, the log is rounded by milling on special milling machines. There are two types of such machines: broaching machines and center machines with a more accurate rounding result. The broaching machine works on the principle of processing a log in the process of pulling it through the machine, more precisely through its cutting head, which rotates and cuts off the surface of the log. Such a machine has low accuracy, as it retains the natural curvature of the log along its entire length. This significantly affects the quality of the walls erected from such a log, since there will be a low density between the logs. The center machine ultimately produces a high-quality product in the form of a rounded log of the correct shape and size. On this machine, the cutting head selects the natural curvature of the log along its entire length, and the log is even. This is a good log for creating walls with low thermal conductivity due to the dense shrinkage of the logs to each other.
Production can be installed only in the enterprise, but not at home. And it is impossible to make a rounded log with your own hands using an ax and a chisel. If you cannot afford to buy a log processed at the enterprise, then there is only one option left - to use a wooden frame. It is less efficient in its characteristics than round logs, but at the same time it retains the same properties in terms of thermal conductivity and naturalness. Due to the fact that modern machines are very multifunctional and equipped with a large assortment of various devices and tools, it is possible to ensure the implementation of all production operations for the manufacture of a log house with only one galvanizing machine.

Among the possibilities of machines for logs are also milling of a longitudinal groove and plane and selection of a crown cup. This functionality makes the cylindering machine a kind of mini-production for the manufacture of wooden. Processing of products on a rounding machine allows you to assemble a log house as if from designer parts, without subsequent fitting of parts. After processing on the machine, there is no need to grind the surface of the log or any other subsequent processing.
The main elements of the lathe-milling machine are the frame and the carriage moving along it. The workpiece, fixed at the ends between specially rigidly installed adjustable centers (headstocks), is rotated, while the combined cutter rotating at a high frequency begins to move along the log, thereby processing it. Longitudinal feed (moving the carriage along the frame along the log) can be either manual or electromechanical.

The machine allows efficient use of wood without prior selection. The machine has steady rests for adjusting the support force and reducing the vibration of the log when processing inhomogeneous surface layer and high processing speed.

The quality of the surface being machined primarily depends on the degree of sharpening of the cutting edges. The axis of the log and the cutting edge of the cutter in the horizontal plane look like intersecting straight lines. Although modern housebuilding requires subsequent polishing of the log to obtain a highly decorative look, this machine makes it possible to perform both roughing and finishing in one pass during rounding.
