Clematis Jan Pavel 2 why does not bloom. The best varieties of clematis. When is the best time to plant clematis?

Indeed, on sale now appeared a large number of cultivars.

But not all of them, unfortunately, are suitable for our climate.

Many are suitable only for regions with a mild climate, although some grow with us, they do not have time to bloom, others develop well and bloom profusely in middle lane.

Based on literature data and my own 15-year experience in growing clematis in the Moscow region, I would like to evaluate the varieties that can now be found on sale.

Gardeners divide varietal clematis into large-flowered (flower diameter 10 cm or more) and small-flowered (less than 10 cm diameter).

Flowering time is essential.

Some varieties bloom in April-May, others in June, a large number of clematis bloom in July-August, and, finally, there are those whose buds bloom from August to October.

Plants that bloom in April-May lay flower buds in the summer-autumn of the previous year, that is, they bloom on last year's shoots, therefore, in preparation for winter, their lashes are not cut.

Such varieties belong to the first pruning group.

The second group of pruning includes clematis, which bloom both on last year's and on the shoots of the current year.

Mass flowering occurs in June-early July in the upper third of young shoots.

In autumn, the faded part of the shoots is removed, and the remaining 2/3 are kept for early flowering.

The third pruning group includes clematis that bloom from July to October on the current year's shoots. These shoots are cut off completely in the fall.

Landing and care

Clematis can be planted almost throughout the growing season, but it is still preferable to do this in early spring or in autumn.

Acquire better biennial seedlings, with a well-developed root system (at least 4-6 strong roots 10-15 cm long), obtained from cuttings or separated from an adult bush and grown in an area similar in climate.

Clematis brought to us from Holland take root worse, abundant flowering they start later.

These plants are best planted in the fall.

When buying seedlings with an open root system, you should choose specimens with a large number of dormant buds, the roots should be moist, without rot and thickening.

Unfortunately, the sale of clematis is not complete without regrading.

Therefore, many people prefer to buy plants with flowers to avoid making a mistake.

However, only varieties of the 1st and 2nd pruning groups can bloom in spring.

If you bought a seedling with dormant buds, you can plant it in the ground in April-May without fear of frost.

A plant with shoots and leaves will have to be kept indoors until stable warm weather sets in and gradually accustomed to the conditions. open ground

Over time, a tillering center is formed from deepened buds, and in the future strong, abundantly flowering bushes develop that do not suffer from frost and overheating.

However, weak seedlings should not be deeply buried, as this will hinder the development of young shoots.

The bush becomes an adult and blooms profusely in the 3-5th year after planting, depending on the variety and growing conditions.

O. ASTAKHOVA "Clematis: reliable and beautiful"// "Floriculture.

Name: The name "clematis" comes from the Greek word klema, which once denoted any climbing plant. Of the many popular names (lozinka, grandfather's curls, warthog, etc.) in Russia, "clematis" is most often used. Probably, this vine was named so because of the strong smell of dug up roots or because its seeds have a curved outgrowth.

Description: belongs to the buttercup family. In nature, there are about 300 species that can be found on all continents (except Antarctica) - in forests, steppes, along river banks, in gorges and on rocky placers.

Types of clematis vary greatly among themselves. In herbaceous perennials (C. mandshurica [Manchurian], C. recta [straight], C. texensis [Texas]), the shoots die off towards the end of the growing season. Semi-shrubs (C. heracleifolia [hogweed], C. integrifolia [whole-leaved]) have a lignified lower part, which lasts for several years, and an upper one that dies off annually. Shrubs (C. fruticosa f. lobata [shrub f. lobed]) have completely lignified wintering shoots. Most of the species (C. tangutica [Tangut], C. vitalba [vine-leaved], C. viticella [purple]) belong to the group of leaf climbers that use supports, climbing them with the help of leaf petioles.

The root system of clematis is of two types: taproot (C. tangutica [Tangut], C. serratifolia [serrate]) and fibrous [C. recta [straight], C. viticella [purple]). It must be remembered that clematis with a tap root system do not tolerate transplantation well. It is better to immediately plant them in a permanent place.

Clematis have thin, 2-5 mm in diameter, shoots of the current year. In herbaceous species they are round, green, in woody species they are four-six-sided, light or dark reddish-brown in color. They develop in spring from dormant buds on the underground part of the plant or from above-ground buds of overwintered shoots.

The leaves of clematis are paired, simple or compound, consisting of three, five or seven leaves, in addition to the usual green ones, there are forms with a purple color.

Clematis flowers, as a rule, are bisexual, solitary or collected in inflorescences of various shapes (scutellum, panicle, semi-umbrella). The role of petals in clematis is played by sepals, numbering from four to eight, in terry varieties - up to seventy. In the center of a simple flower is the so-called lush "spider" (many pistils and stamens], it often has a different color than the "petals", which gives the flower a special charm. delicate flowers very whimsical: white, yellow, all the nuances of transitions from pale pink and pale blue to velvety shimmering shades of red and blue. And this charming picture pleases for more than one day - the life of a flower lasts a week or two, and a terry - almost three. By choosing the right varieties, you can achieve flowering clematis in the garden from spring to autumn. After all, early species are covered with flowers two months after spring awakening, and late ones at the end of summer. Their flowering will be interrupted only by persistent frosts. Short-term temperature drops at night (up to -2 ... -7 ° С) and light snow are not terrible for clematis - after warming, the buds open. The flowers of some species exude the aroma of jasmine, primrose, almond.

Clematis fruits are numerous achenes with short or long pubescent columns and fleecy beaks, collected in fluffy silky heads.

From the history: The beginning of the cultivation of clematis in Western Europe dates back to the 16th century, and in Japan, the culture of clematis has an even longer history. In Russia, clematis appeared at the beginning of the 19th century as greenhouse plants. Active work on the cultivation and introduction of clematis in our country began to develop only in the middle of the 20th century. And as a result of selection work, beautiful varieties and forms have been created, which further emphasize the unique charm of these magnificent plants.

Classification: with all the variety of species, varieties and forms of clematis, there is a classification that is convenient for gardeners, which makes it possible not only to easily group plants according to the shape and color of flowers, but also to choose the appropriate agricultural technology. All varieties are divided into groups.

Jacquman- large shrub vines with shoots 3-4 m long and a well-developed root system. The flowers are large, blue-violet-purple tones, odorless. Differ in abundant and long flowering on the shoots of the current year. For the winter, the shoots are cut to the level of the soil or the bases of the shoots are left with 2-3 pairs of buds. The ancestor of the varieties of this group is the large-flowered variety "Jackmana" ("Jackmanii"), or K. x Zhakman (Jackmanii = Clematis x Jackmanii), when crossing with varieties of other groups.

Viticella- shrub vines 3-3.5 m long. Flowers open with a predominance of pink-red-purple velvety tones in color. They are characterized by lush and long flowering in the summer on the shoots of the current year. For the winter, the shoots are pruned. The cultivars were obtained from crossing the violet (C. viticella) with forms and cultivars of other groups.

Lanuginoza- shrub vines with thin shoots up to 2.5 m long. The flowers are large, wide open, mostly light in color (white, blue, pink tones). Differ in mass flowering on the shoots of the previous year. When pruning shoots in the fall the following year, flowering occurs from the second half of summer on the shoots of the current year.

Patents- shrub vines 3-3.5 m long. Flowers open, solitary, up to 15 cm in diameter or more, color from light to bright blue-violet-purple, deep purple tones. Many varieties have double flowers. Flowering on last year's shoots. Shoots in autumn should only be shortened, removing the faded part, and covered until spring. Varieties from spreading clematis (C. patens) with varieties and species of other groups.

Florida- shrub vines with shoots up to 3 m long. The flowers are open, of various colors, but predominate bright hues. Flowering on last year's shoots. They should be shortened to 1.5-2 m in length and kept under cover during the winter. If they are cut off completely, then a rather weak flowering occurs only from the second half of summer on the shoots of the current year. Varieties obtained by crossing flowery clematis (C. florida) with species and varieties of other groups.

Integrifolia- vigorous, climbing shrubs up to 1.5 m high. The flowers are half-open, bell-shaped, up to 12 cm in diameter, of various colors. They bloom profusely in summer on the shoots of the current year. For the winter, the shoots are pruned. Varieties obtained from whole-leaved clematis (C . integrifolia) when crossed with other species and varieties. A. N. Volosenko-Valenis and M. A. Beskaravaynaya created many interesting profusely flowering hybrids of this group in the Nikitsky Botanical Garden.

Depending on the size of the flower, small-flowered (up to 5 cm in diameter) and large-flowered (more than 5 cm in diameter) clematis are distinguished. Large-flowered climbing clematis includes varieties and forms from the groups of Jacqueman, Vititsella, Lanuginoza, Patens. To bush large-flowered clematis- varieties and forms from the Integrifolia group. Large-flowered clematis are considered especially beautiful and elegant, but small-flowered clematis are no less good, moreover, they are very undemanding to growing conditions, give a lot of greenery and are easily propagated by seeds. Small-flowered clematis are unusually graceful, their flowering is plentiful, and original seed heads adorn the plant in autumn.

For planting in the North-Western regions of the European part of the country, Siberia, the Far East, where summers are relatively short and frosts are fair in winter, it is better to choose early and medium-early varieties from the groups of Jacqueman, Vititsella and Integrifolia, which bloom profusely on the shoots of the current year: Ville de Lyon , Japsy Queen, Victoria, Star of India, Luther Burbank, Hagley Hybrid, Madame Baron Vilar, Blue Flame, Alexandrite, Golden Jubilee, Alyonushka, Silver Brook, Polish Varshavyanka, Victory Salute. Anastasia Anisimova. Space Melody. Huldin, Rouge Cardinal, Gray Bird, Cloud, AnEre Le Roy. Lilac Star, Niobe...

However, there are hybrids from the Jacqueman group that are more suitable for the south: Elegy, Alpinist, Biryuzinka. Openwork. In the north, these varieties bloom more poorly over the years, although the mass of shoots increases. Clematis groups Lanuginosa, Patens, Florida (their first flowering occurs on the shoots of last year) are less winter-hardy and require shelter of vines even in the middle lane. However, the varieties Madame Van Hutte, Losoniana, Nelly Moser, Stone Flower, Ramona, Lazurshtern, Ball of Flowers, Nadezhda, V. E. Gladstone, Mrs. Hope, Mrs. Cholmondeley even in such inhospitable conditions flaunt the sophistication of shapes and colors. In the southern regions, clematis with double flowers bloom profusely: Madame Bajun, Daniel Deronda, Jeanne d'Arc, Lord Neville. In the middle lane, these varieties will only have double flowers on last year's overwintered shoots.

Location: clematis are photophilous plants. If there is not enough light, not only will you not achieve good flowering, you may not even wait for it. Therefore, in the middle lane, it is best to plant them in sunny or slightly shaded areas during the midday hours. Only in the southern regions, where clematis often suffer from overheating of the soil, they are planted in partial shade. In group plantings, each plant should receive enough light, and the distance between the bushes should be at least 1 meter. The wind is a terrible enemy of clematis not only in summer, but also in winter: it breaks and confuses shoots, damages flowers. Where snow blows off in winter, planting clematis is not a good idea. And in the lowlands, where cold air accumulates, clematis feel uncomfortable. Clematis are very demanding on moisture: during growth, they need abundant watering. At the same time, wet, wetlands with high standing ground water(less than 1.2 slows are not suitable for them, even if the water stagnates only for a short time. Waterlogging of the soil is dangerous not only in summer, but also in early spring during and after the snow melts. When planning the planting of clematis, you need to consider the natural outflow of water from the bush: add earth, plant bushes on ridges or dig grooves with a slope.

The soil: clematis prefer fertile sandy or loamy soil, rich in humus, loose, slightly alkaline to slightly acidic.

Landing: since clematis can grow in one place for more than 20 years, the ground is prepared very deeply in advance. Usually, holes are dug at least 60x60x60 cm in size, and for group plantings, the site is prepared over the entire area. 2-3 buckets of humus or compost, 1 bucket of peat and sand, 100-150 g of superphosphate, 200 g of complete mineral fertilizer, preferably 100 g of bone meal, 150 -200 g lime or chalk, 200 g ash. On light soils, add more peat, leaf humus and clay. If the soil in the area is wet, dense or clayey, then a 10-1 5-cm layer of crushed stone, broken brick or coarse sand is poured into the bottom of the pit. Thoroughly mixed earthen mixture is poured into a pit and compacted. In the southern regions, it is preferable to do this in the fall (from late September to early November; in the middle lane best time- September (in warm weather - and later); further north, clematis is planted in spring (late April - May) or early autumn. Plants in containers can be planted at any time (except in winter, of course).

A strong rigid support is installed in the center of the pit. A stretched rope is no good here, it will not protect young fragile lashes from gusts of wind. Having filled the hole with soil about halfway, they make a mound on which the clematis roots are straightened to the sides and down. Holding the plant with your hand, pour the mixture to the roots, making sure that the clematis is planted deep. Only then will it develop a tillering center, on which further new buds are laid, shoots and roots are formed. Such bushes tolerate harsh winters better, suffer less from heat. Clematis planted flush with the surface are short-lived: they do not bush, grow in 1-2 stems, their root system suffers from wetting. The larger the seedling, the deeper the planting should be. Young one-biennial plants are buried by 8-12 cm and the lower pair of buds, older and divided bushes - by 12-18 cm. If clematis is planted in spring, then landing pit fill with earth not to the brim, but leave 5-8 cm unfilled so that the “newcomer” does not “suffocate”. As the shoots become lignified, this space is gradually filled with soil. After planting, clematis is watered abundantly, shaded from the sun, and the surface of the earth around the plant is mulched with peat. When planting in autumn, the earth is filled up to the brim, the entire above-ground part is cut off to the level of the soil or slightly higher.

Requirements. for planting material: during autumn planting, clematis should have developed vegetative buds, during spring planting - at least one shoot. Seedlings must have a minimum of 3 roots less than 10 cm long. Plants with a weak root system are placed in a “school” for growing. Use only healthy planting material(the roots of seedlings should be elastic, without visible damage, swelling and thickening).

Supports: are of great importance for the normal development, abundant and long flowering of clematis. It is important that they are not only practical and convenient for the plant, but also beautiful. Galvanized pipes with a diameter of 3/4 inches are used as a supporting structure. Wooden lattices impregnated with drying oil or wood stain, a highly stretched net of nylon rope or thick fishing line with a mesh of 15x15 cm go well with them. Supports for clematis are often bushes of weigela, mock orange, forsythia. Creepers cling to them, rise up, hang freely, and in the second half of summer, shrubs hide under garlands of flowers. Traditionally, screens and arches are considered excellent supports. Clematis look very impressive on horizontal surfaces. for example, on mesh-covered hoops with a diameter of about 1 m, attached to a galvanized pipe at different heights. All supports are made removable and removed for the winter.

Care: in spring, clematis is shed with milk of lime (200 g of lime per 10 liters of water per sq.m). In dry weather, clematis is watered infrequently, but plentifully, making sure that the water jet does not fall into the center of the bush. Clematis are fed at least four times per season after watering with complete mineral fertilizer with trace elements at the rate of 20-40 g per 10 liters of water or diluted fermented mullein (1:10). Mineral and organic top dressing alternate. In the summer, once a month, the plants are watered with a weak solution. boric acid(1-2 g) and potassium permanganate (2-3 g per 10 l of water), and also spray the bushes with urea (0.5 tablespoons per 10 l of water). Since clematis can suffer from overheating and dryness of the soil, in the spring, after the first watering and loosening, the planting should be mulched with peat or humus (in the northern regions) or sawdust (in the southern regions). To protect the soil from overheating and close the lower part of the shoots, clematis are “knocked out” with letniks. In the spring, only the first time the vines are directed along the support in the right direction and tied up. Otherwise, the shoots growing along the run will intertwine so strongly that it will not be possible to unravel them by any means. Only in varieties of the Integrifolia group, shoots and leaves are deprived of the ability to wrap around supports, so they are tied up as they grow all summer. In autumn, before sheltering for the winter, clematis bushes are cut and carefully cleaned of old leaves. The first two or three years, young specimens require especially careful care: in autumn or early spring, well-rotted manure mixed with any potash and phosphorus fertilizer, as well as wood ash (a handful of each per bucket of humus) is added to the bushes, liquid top dressing is done every 10-15 days in small doses.

Pruning: the beauty of clematis largely depends on how well the pruning is done. The first time the shoots are shortened during planting, this is important for the formation of the aerial part and the development of the root system. From the lower pair of buds left during planting, one or two shoots grow, which in the summer must be pinched. In summer, regular pruning is carried out. To stretch the flowering, some of the shoots are cut off in the spring. In early summer, the vines can be shortened again to the first vegetative buds, which will give rise to new shoots with buds. In tall varieties, such as Gypsy Queen, Luther Burbank, Stone Flower, Ernest Markham, flowers are located at the top of the bush. Here it is worth cutting several vines at a height of 0.7 to 1.5 m, then they will be covered with buds more evenly. Now about pruning for the winter. In the varieties of the Zhakman and Vititsella groups, the flowers of which are formed on the shoots of the current year, before sheltering for the winter, the entire aerial part is cut off to a real leaf or to the soil level. They do the same with varieties of the Integrifolia group and some small-flowered clematis: Manchurian, straight, Texas and six-petal. In varieties belonging to the Lanuginoza, Patens and Florida groups, flowers are formed both on the shoots of the current year and on last year's. Their first flowering occurs in early summer on overwintered shoots. The second - on the shoots of the current year, from mid-summer to autumn. Small-flowered clematis Armanda and mountain belong to the same company. In autumn, before sheltering the bushes of these groups for the winter, the vines are removed from the supports, all dry, weak, broken shoots are cut out, and the most developed, strong ones are shortened to 1-1.5 m, bent to the ground or rolled up in a ring and put to the base of the bush.

Wintering: with proper shelter, clematis bushes are able to tolerate frosts up to 40-45 °, however, the main danger in winter and early spring is not frost, but waterlogging of the soil. In addition, after frequent thaws during the day and night frosts, layers of ice can form above the soil, which can break the roots and destroy the tillering center. Therefore, it is important to completely exclude water from entering the soil surface and the base of the bush in winter. Bushes cover when frosty weather sets in, the air temperature drops to minus 5-7 "and the soil begins to freeze. In the middle lane, this occurs in November. Cut into one or two pairs of buds (10-15 cm) or to ground level, bushes of the Jacqueman groups , Vititsella and Integrifolia are covered with dry earth or weathered peat, a mound with a diameter of 60-80 cm is formed above the plant. Approximately 3-4 buckets are spent on each plant. Together with snow, such a shelter will reliably protect the clematis root system from freezing. If you need to keep the lashes in varieties groups Lanuginoza, Patens and Florida, in addition to dry land, the bushes are covered with boards, spruce branches, on top - with pieces of roofing material or sheets of old iron.If the frosts are too strong or there is not enough snow, it is added to the bushes additionally.In the spring, the shelter is removed gradually, some of the peat is left until night frosts will go away.

Reproduction: small-flowered clematis reproduce, as a rule, seeds . Large-flowered are bred exclusively vegetatively. The easiest way to do this is by dividing the bush. In varieties with high tillering ability (Anastasia, Anisimova, Jeanne d'Arc, Hagley Hybrid, Madame Baron Villar, Cosmic Melody), bush division is used for rejuvenation, since very dense bushes often lose their decorative effect even with good care. Clematis can be divided both in autumn and in spring, until the buds have started to grow or have just begun to swell. However, if in the fall this operation is almost painless for plants, since the buds are only marked and small, then in the spring it is necessary to meet extremely short deadlines (from the moment the soil thaws to the start of growth), since it is easy to damage rapidly growing shoots. Clematis, divided in the spring, will lag behind in growth compared to the autumn counterpart by about 2-3 weeks. In an adult 5-8-year-old plant with a sufficient number of shoots, the ground part is cut off, leaving only 2-3 pairs of buds below. The bush is carefully dug up with a clod of earth, trying not to damage the long cord-like roots. If the earth is not easily shaken off, the roots are washed with water from a hose. Then, with a knife, it is divided through the center of the bush into independent plants. They work without haste, carefully, making sure that each division has enough roots and at least one shoot with buds. However, you can do without digging. On one side of the bush, a trench is torn off 50-70 cm deep, and the bayonet of the shovel is deepened into the soil radially to the center of the bush in order to damage as few roots as possible. In a half-dug bush, shoots with roots are separated with a tool, each of which will become an independent plant. Before planting, the delenki are inspected, only healthy ones are used. The roots are cut and disinfected in a pink solution of potassium permanganate.

It is quite easy to propagate the variety you like by layering. There are several tricks. Here is the first one. Spud with peat or humus bush on the lower 2-3 pairs of leaves. After a year or two, the lower nodes of the shoots are overgrown with their own roots. After removing the sprinkled substrate, rooted shoots are cut off from the mother plant and planted. This method is good because the bush itself is not injured. The second method requires some free space. At the end of summer or autumn, grooves 8-10 cm deep are dug around the bush in the radial direction. Clematis shoots with well-formed buds are removed from the support, laid out in grooves one at a time, pressed to the ground with thick wire staples, and sprinkled with loose nutrient soil. The top of the shoot (20 cm) is brought out. You can do the same with a liana rolled around the base of a bush and covered for the winter. In the spring, when the plant is freed from shelter, one or more of these lashes are placed in a groove. Layers during the summer are regularly watered and fed. From almost all covered buds, vertical shoots begin to grow, and rooting occurs at each node. It is best to separate the rooted shoots from the bush in the fall of the following year or in the spring of a year later. By this time, each new shoot will have a good root system. From one sprinkled lash in a year or two, you can get up to 10 seedlings that do not need to grow, while the bush itself does not suffer. Another method of vegetative propagation is green cuttings.

Usage: for vertical gardening. You can achieve a wonderful effect by planting several plants on one side of the garden path (colors are a matter of taste). The resulting screen about two meters high will divide the space, help to equip a secluded place to relax. In the parterre part of the garden, trellises and arches twined with clematis are appropriate. An important point is the height of the support. Clematis shoots should hide it, and then a colorful carpet of flowers and leaves seems to hang in the air. A gazebo built in a sunny place can be made elegant and shady by planting two or three contrasting colors around the clasmatis, for example, alternating pink and purple or white, red, blue. It is good to decorate the entrance with an arch twined with small-flowered k. fargesiodies or fragrant k. paniculate. For planting near the house, take the east, south or west exposure. Purple, raspberry, purple varieties look great against the background of light walls. White, blue and pink are more spectacular near a red brick house. In rockeries, you can use more undersized varieties: "Ryytel" with red-purple velvety flowers, "Georg Otho" with beautifully shaped blue-violet flowers, lavender-blue "Taktika" ("Taktica").

Partners: by planting clematis near forsythia, spirea, mock orange or lilac, you can extend or supplement the flowering of the shrub. Low trees are also decorated with tall types of clematis yew, which rise up, forming long luxurious garlands in the crown.

In containers: Plants in containers are now in vogue. On the other hand, clematis settle in a new space for themselves: on outdoor terrace or in the loggia. In addition, they begin to bloom much earlier. For growing on the window, varieties that bloom on the shoots of the previous year (Daniel Deronda, Lazurshtern, Jeanne D "Arc, President, Barbara Dibley, Losoniana, Stone Flower) are suitable. Seedlings with a well-developed root system, obtained either by dividing an adult plant, or grown especially within 2-3 years.

Start planting in the spring. Take a tall pot with a diameter of at least 30 cm or a wooden box. The container is 1/8 of the height filled with gravel, then with a substrate of soddy or garden soil (4 parts), compost or rotted manure (2 parts), sand (1 part), peat (1 part), add half a glass of superphosphate and lime. At the same time, a trapezoidal support 1-1.5 m high is installed, on which growing shoots will be fixed every 15-20 cm. A pot of clematis is put out in the garden or dug to the brim in the ground. By autumn, the seedling is well rooted and forms developed shoots. In late autumn, they dig up the pot, cut off the upper part of the shoots where the flowers were, leave the lashes tied to a support, and put the pot in a cool cellar with a temperature of 0 ... +2.

In early January, the plant is transferred to a room and placed on a bright window, where at + 8-12 ° and budding takes place. If the temperature is higher, the buds may not appear. But as soon as they are formed, the temperature is raised to 15-18 °, and already in late February - early March, clematis will bloom.

The plant is watered moderately, from a pallet, and systematically fed with mineral and water diluted in water. organic fertilizers. Watering with complex organomineral preparation HUMAT +7 containing a set of trace elements (1 teaspoon of the preparation per 10 liters of water) is extremely useful. Lack of light at this time can change the color of the flowers. So, instead of lilac-pink, white-green or milky pink will bloom. Lighting and fertilizing the plant with calcium nitrate will correct this deficiency. After flowering, clematis is sent back to the garden in early summer, providing good care. One and the same seedling can be “expelled” no more than 2-3 years in a row: the plant is very depleted and needs “rehabilitation” in the ground.

There are some nuances in growing clematis on a balcony or in a loggia. First of all, the south, west or east side and a place protected from the wind are suitable. In this regard, the loggia, of course, wins, since the air currents here are weaker, however, you can also arrange shelter on the balcony. For planting clematis, wooden boxes measuring 65 (height) x45x30 cm are knocked down, two 3x5 cm bars are nailed along the entire length along the bottom so that the boxes are raised above the floor and water does not accumulate at the bottom. Pallets must be placed under them, and the boxes themselves are located at the rear and side walls of the loggia, small containers are hung on the walls or placed on racks. In this case, the sun should not fall on the surface of the earth in the container. With great care, you should consider the support system, because at the beginning of summer, even on the balcony, the daily growth of vines can be 10 cm. If you use an old fishing net with 10x10 cm cells or weave a similar canopy and place it 15-20 cm from the ceiling, then already in At the beginning of summer, a whole waterfall of flowers will fall from it. Place several varieties of different colors nearby at once: pink, deep raspberry, lilac, purple, then the spectacle will be especially colorful. For planting on a balcony or in a loggia, medium-sized and undersized varieties belonging to the Lanuginoza, Patens and Florida groups, as well as Jacqueman, Vititsella, Integrifolia (the latter require more intensive pruning to reduce the height of the plant and increase the number of flowers), as well as small-flowered clematis : six-petalled, serrated, Tangut, Armand, Manchurian.

Clematis planted in a container need more frequent watering and fertilizing than in open ground, careful and timely tying of shoots, mandatory mulching and loosening of the soil. 3-5 liters of water are usually poured onto one plant, if it is not absorbed, holes are carefully made with a wooden peg in the corners and perimeter of the box. When the creepers along the ceiling reach the edge of the loggia, it is advisable to turn them back and tie them up so that the flowers are grouped at the top of the wall or hang from the ceiling. In glazed loggias, where the temperature in early spring in the sun can reach 30-40 °, ventilation is necessary: stagnation of air, high temperature and humidity in a limited space contribute to the appearance of pests and the development of diseases. Already in April, clematis of the Lanuginoza, Patens and Florida groups will bloom in the glazed loggia, and by mid-May - varieties that bloom on the shoots of the current year. Clematis are transplanted every 2-3 years, usually in spring (April-May), replacing “tired” bushes with new ones from the site. There is nothing difficult in sheltering containers with clematis for the winter. If in the glazed loggia the temperature does not drop below minus 10-12 in winter, then the vines are cut according to the group to which the variety belongs, removed from the supports, shortened and laid on top of the box, covered with peat or sawdust, covered with an old blanket, coat, newspapers, placed wrapped clematis in a large plastic bag, be sure to remove it from the floor of the loggia and put it on a dais - a shelf or box. It is rather difficult to cover clematis reliably in an open loggia or on a balcony, so the container is removed to the basement, underground, unheated greenhouse or dug into the ground until next spring.

clematis that smell

Clematis are guests from the tropics who have taken root well in the climate of the Russian Federation. The flower is thermophilic, but in favorable conditions able to bloom profusely and beautifully. Today, about 300 species of clematis of various colors are known, and some of the varieties are adapted to the cool conditions of the Moscow region. The article contains photos, characteristics, reviews and a description of the process of growing these flowers, as well as video tips from experienced gardeners.

Species description of clematis

Clematis grow on almost all continents in absolutely different conditions: in dense forest and among the steppes, on rocky gorges and fertile river banks. Wild clematis - climbing or bush - has small flowers. Gardeners, as a rule, cultivate hybrids with large flowers. The color of the petals can be blue, deep blue, purple, red, pink, etc. Particularly popular climbing plants. Other characteristics of clematis:

  • flowers solitary or collected in inflorescences;
  • the shape of the flowers is a semi-umbrella, shield or panicle;
  • foliage - complex (3.5 or 7 leaves), steam room or simple;
  • root - taproot or fibrous.

Attention! Clematis with a rod system negatively tolerate transplantation and require permanent place Location on.

It should be understood that the first variety that comes across in the climate of the Moscow region will not grow normally. Clematis just do not like the local cool climate with short-term winter frosts. Gardeners are advised to choose plants with early flowering. Those that can form inflorescences on branches grown in spring.

Attention! Terry varieties of clematis with flowering on overwintered shoots will produce flowers without a fluffy coating.

The best varieties clematis for the Moscow region: TOP-10

  • Nelli Moser. The variety has stood the test of time. Petals - white-pink with bright lines in the center. Burn out in intense sun. Flowering on old shoots begins in late spring and continues on new branches until frost.

Attention! Even those varieties that are adapted to the cold must be carefully prepared for the winter. The shelter partly saves the flowers, but sometimes the bush still freezes through and then recovers the whole next season.

Features of planting clematis in the climate of the Moscow region

In the climate of the Moscow region, clematis is usually planted in early autumn or spring, after the last night frost. A place on the site for shrubs should be selected well-lit, without drafts. True, it is better not to plant clematis in the sun, they also do not tolerate heat well. Also, do not plant the plant close to a wall or fence.

The landing site should be deeply dug and loose, with good drainage. Acidity - neutral or close to that. During the growing season, starting from planting, the plant needs regular top dressing. However, you should not bring in fresh organic matter or peat: you will only make it worse.

Advice. For culture, damp, heavy, too saline or acidic soil is unacceptable. Clematis are planted so that next season they can be further deepened by adding a little earth.

Soak the roots in water a couple of hours before starting the process. In the pit for the seedling, pour a small hill and evenly distribute the roots over it. After planting the plant, it must be cut off. A little later, the procedure should be repeated. Also, a young plant needs a grid or trellis as a support - it will cling to it with leaf petioles and will soon decorate the site with a kind of green rug. The height of the support is about 2 m.

Reviews of clematis varieties for the Moscow region

  • in summer, in the heat, water the bush at least 1 time per week;

Be sure to build a support for clematis

  • keep clean by removing weeds. This is important for the size and abundance of flowers;
  • preparing a plant for winter cannot do without cutting the stems in late autumn;
  • watering should be regular and plentiful, it is better to reinforce it with mulching, otherwise the flowers will be small even in large-flowered varieties.

Top dressing of clematis is effectively done according to the following scheme:

  • in spring - nitrogen-containing fertilizers, for active flowering;
  • in May - ash or other potash fertilizer;
  • at the end of summer - phosphate fertilizer.

Among the characteristic diseases of clematis is wilt, wilting of the apical leaves. It is believed that clematis of blue and purple shades are easier to care for than blue, pink, purple and especially large-flowered white ones.

The first thing that novice clematis growers should find out when buying a plant is how winter-hardy the variety (or species) they like is and to which pruning group it belongs.

Clematis classification and pruning groups

Do not know which group belongs to clematis, bought, for example, in the market? Do a combo cut. Divide the lashes of the plant into three parts. Shorten the first strongly, the second by half, the third a little bit. And next year compare where the flowering is better.
