Roller blinds or roller blinds are a solid fabric fabric that contains dust-repellent and sun-reflecting elements in the coating. Being stable and having high strength, they can last for a long time. Over the past few years, roller blinds have become very popular due to their ease of use and care. The most common are roller blinds for plastic windows or wooden euro-windows. Using roller blinds is a fairly effective and cost-effective method for blocking light. Important factor– the material of such curtains, on which their price depends.

Roller blinds help control required amount light in the room, preventing damage to furniture and indoor plants.

In cases where it is necessary to darken the room completely, roller blinds made of special opaque fabric of the Black-Out type are used, which can completely cut off the light from the room. Roller blinds also help maintain the desired temperature in the room throughout the year. Also, to achieve comfort in the home, roller blinds made from natural materials, for example, bamboo roller blinds, are used.

Roller blinds are quite easy to use. They are fixed either inside the window opening, or directly on the wall. Using a chain, they are lowered or rolled into a roll and placed above the window, thus adjusting the illumination of the room.

Typically, roller blinds can be bought in the appropriate specialized stores, but if you have difficulty choosing or don’t want to order, then you can make such roller blinds yourself.

Types of roller blinds

There are several types of roller blinds, each of which has its own characteristics. Roller blinds come in the following types:

  • Open type, so-called mini, specially made for PVC windows. These mini curtains can be installed on windows without drilling. The lower cornice can be fixed with magnets.
  • Uni-1 roller blinds, used when the glazing bead depth reaches more than 14 millimeters. Thanks to simple mechanism control, the roller blind fits harmoniously into the window, forming an integral structure with it.
  • Roller blinds Uni-2, which are used for slanting beads with an angle of more than 45 degrees and a depth of less than 14 millimeters.
  • Black-Out light-proof roller blinds, which are designed to completely darken a room.
  • Day-night roller blinds, consisting of two types of fabrics alternating with stripes (transparent and opaque material), arranged in two layers. When the curtains are lowered and raised, the strips of fabric constantly shift, thereby changing the lighting in the room.
  • Corrugated pleated curtains, made of fabric that is attached to a special profile. These curtains are easy to assemble into an accordion if necessary.
  • The simplest option is open roller blinds, consisting of a drum and a fabric that is wound onto the drum. The curtain is controlled using a latch and cables. The lock can be used to secure the canvas in different positions to obtain different degrees of closure of the window opening.
  • Roller blinds for plastic windows have guides, so they can be installed both inside the double-glazed window and on the window. Installation inside a double-glazed window is more efficient and convenient, absolutely eliminating the possibility of contamination of the curtain fabric. Such a system has only one drawback: it can only be repaired in a workshop, although its reliability makes it almost impossible to break it.
  • Another type is cassette roller blinds, also designed for PVC windows and mounted separately on each sash, which makes it possible to separately control the roller blind sections depending on the required degree of opening of the sash.

The most convenient is the day-night system, which allows you to smoothly and effectively control the level of lighting in the room and, if desired, create a complete darkening of the room. Most roller blinds are manually operated, but there are also relatively sophisticated motorized blinds, many of which can be adjusted via remote control.

In addition to fabric roller blinds, manufacturers also offer roller blinds for plastic windows made from bamboo, natural material which can have a positive impact on the well-being and mood of those living in the house. You can also make such curtains yourself or purchase a semi-finished kit.

Advantages of roller blinds

Roller blinds have the following advantages:

  • they are used both as an addition to existing curtains and as independent window decoration;
  • roller blinds are installed on any wooden or plastic windows, fitting tightly to the glass and excluding any possibility of looking into the room from the street;
  • they are easy to care for;
  • roller blinds can protect from strong sun exposure or, if necessary, darken the room completely;
  • Roller blinds have a wide variety of options and are quite easy to manage.

Thanks to the convenient design of roller blinds, they do not take up much space when assembled and do not interfere when curtains are not needed. It is also convenient because when folded, dirt and dust do not settle on them, and they need to be cleaned less often. This option is especially convenient for the kitchen, because during cooking various contaminants can get onto the surface. An undeniable advantage is the ability to place the cornice directly above window frame, leaving the window sill free for use as extra space or work surface.

The designs of roller blinds are also convenient for balcony doors. You don’t have to assemble them to get onto the balcony, since they are attached to the door and move with it.

In a child's room, roller blinds can be used as a screen for a television projector.

Differences between roller blinds and Roman blinds

Some people confuse roller blinds with Roman blinds, which are very similar in appearance, but have a different mechanism for lifting the curtains. Thus, when raised, Roman blinds are gathered into horizontal folds using a cord located on the sides or on the back. Roller blinds are wound onto a special rod, which is located at the top of the window opening. The web wound around the bar can be placed in plain sight or it can be hidden in a cassette.

Self-made roller blinds are rolled up at the bottom and secured with garter ribbons, which hang at a certain distance from each other along the width of the canvas.

Required materials and tools

To create roller blinds with your own hands you will need following materials and tools:

  • Two pieces of fabric for the front and back sides, corresponding to the size of the window. The canvas patterns may be the same or may differ. If the window has several sashes, the number of leaves should be equal to twice the number of sashes.
  • Ribbons, pieces of fabric or laces for garters, the length of which should be equal to the length of the curtain itself, multiplied by two, adding a spare 20-30 centimeters.
  • Wooden beam for fastening with a thickness of 2.5 × 2.5 centimeters to 4x Such a beam can be replaced with a metal tube, but in this case it will be necessary to purchase fasteners. The width of the wooden beam is taken according to the width of the curtain or one centimeter less than it. You can also use a cassette system after purchasing it in a store.
  • A wooden plank or a metal rod for weighting.
  • Paper clips and stapler designed for furniture.
  • Screwdriver and screws for installing wooden beams.
  • Various sewing supplies

Preparing to create roller blinds

The first step is to take measurements of the opening, if the curtains are attached to the opening, or the glass sheet, if attached to wooden frame. The width of the roller blind should be 2-4 centimeters greater than the width of the window opening, taking into account allowances, and the length should be 5-15 centimeters greater than the height of the window opening.

Step-by-step creation of roller blinds

The procedure for creating roller blinds is as follows:

  1. The fabric is laid out and sewn from the wrong side in accordance with the calculations for the length on both sides, and the width - only on one side. The resulting bag is turned inside out.
  2. The remaining gap is sewn up if a pocket is made for weighting, or left open if you plan to place the weighting material inside the bag. In the first case, after sewing the gap, a pocket is made, the fabric is ironed and a weighting agent is inserted. In the second option, the weighting agent is placed inside the bag, an indent of 0.5 centimeters is made above it and the curtain is stitched so that the weighting agent does not create obstacles when twisting it. Then sew up the remaining gap.
  3. The canvas is wrapped around the beam, attached using a stapler. If pipe is used, it is wrapped, stitched, or hand-stitched into the fabric.
  4. The prepared garters are thrown over the fasteners to the top and fixed with a stapler or grabbed with threads.
  5. The beam is attached to the opening or to the window frame through the lower part. The upper part can be decorated with a figured edge. To make the roller blind you have made easy to change, you can replace the stapler fasteners with hooks or a zipper. When making a roller blind for a plastic window, attaching it directly to the window, you can use adhesive double-sided tape for fastening in the upper part, and as a weighting agent - wooden slats.

Thus, you can sew several types of roller blinds with your own hands, changing the appearance of the room according to your mood or in accordance with the time of year. Self-made roller blinds will tell about the skill and taste of their owners. Making such curtains yourself is quite simple, you just need to be careful and prudent. The materials necessary for this can be purchased at any construction and sewing store. Caring for rolled storms is quite easy: they can be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner and wiped with a damp cloth. Heavier stains should be washed off with soapy water. published

Sewing roller blinds yourself

Before you start sewing such products, you should measure the window opening and take into account the method of fastening: on the cornice, in the window opening, on the frame.

In the first case, it is necessary to add about 10 cm to the measured width to ensure reliable protection from the sun's rays.

We offer several simple options self-made roller blinds, which differ in the method of fastening and the mechanism for raising the canvas.

Cutting and sewing fabric

    1. When cutting, the dimensions obtained when measuring the window should be added in width - 2.5 cm for allowances, in length - up to 15 cm for “pockets” and allowances.
    2. Cut out two fabrics (for the front and back of the curtain). They can be from the same fabric or from different ones.

If the fabric is dense and there is no need for special light protection, then you can use one sheet.

    1. Fold the fabric face to face and stitch on three sides (from the inside out!). Important!

If the window is large and it is necessary to sew two strips in the center, then you need to make sure that the seam falls on the frame binding. This way it will be less noticeable.

  1. Turn the fabric inside out, carefully sew up the remaining side and press the seams.

Further actions depend on the method and mechanism of fastening.

Mounting on a cornice

In this case, you need to do the following:

  • sew two “pockets” on the curtain: on the top - for the curtain rod, on the bottom - for the weighting (wooden or metal) strip. Next, sew plastic rings on top on both sides;
  • Screw in hooks on the sides of the window opening from above. After this, you can hang and arrange a mechanism for raising the curtains;
  • take two cords (one for three lengths of the finished model, the second for three lengths of the curtain and its width);
  • tie the end of the first cord to the hook, pass through the bottom of the product and thread it through the ring;
  • fasten the second cord in the same way, but pass it through both rings in sequence;
  • gather the cords together and fasten them.

Lifting mechanism: when the cords are pulled, the curtain will be wound up due to the counterweight.

Making a roller curtain with your own hands

Beam mount

In this case, you need to prepare wooden beam, which will be attached from above into the window opening or to the frame. For greater aesthetics, you can wrap it in fabric, and then attach one piece of Velcro tape to the bottom.

As in the previous case, a “pocket” should be made at the bottom of the curtain for the weighting agent. Carefully sew the second part of the Velcro tape on top.

The fastening tapes are cut out and sewn separately. You can use ready-made decorative cords or ribbons; their length should be equal to two curtain lengths plus 15-20 cm.

Fasten this beam to the window, first passing the fastening tapes on both sides.

So, to install the rail you need to fold the bottom edge of the product and stitch it along the edge of the product. You will have a compact pocket, and the bar will be inserted into it. The rail on which the roller blind will be attached is made of natural wood- this is a block slightly smaller in size than the pocket itself.

Now we are laying out the material. We place the canvas on a flat table, place its upper part around the block, and then secure it furniture stapler. That's it, your blinds are almost ready, but to make them more attractive, you should show imagination and invention - You can additionally decorate the curtains with bright ribbons and any other decorative accessories.

Homemade curtain ties

Instead of bandages, ready-made tapes are usually used. Such products in large quantities are sold in haberdashery, but if you have imagination, you can make ribbons for decorating roller blinds yourself. For one product you need to take two oblong strips of fabric, then sew them from the inside out on three sides, the sewn part is turned right side out, and the fourth side is folded neatly and stitched from the outside. For one product you will need at least 2 garters, however, if the window is wide and large, then you need to sew at least four such products.

There is a lot of information on this topic on the Internet. An educational film will help you to make roll structures with your own hands., where all stages of the work are clearly and in detail described. By using ballpoint pen and rulers we calculate measurements from the wrong side of the curtains. Then we glue the crossbars with glue, which we place along the pre-drawn dotted lines. For this work, construction adhesive for fabric is used. The work must be done cleanly do not overuse glue, because when it dries it will harden and can be visible from the outside of the fabric. So, we have glued the material, now we need to carefully straighten it so that there are no folds on the product, then we glue the slats onto it.

  • along the width of the opening or glass, plus 3 cm for allowance;
  • along the length we measure the height of the opening or glass, plus 15 cm for the allowance and “pocket”.

For one window we make two panels of the same size. Choosing ribbons for garters. Their length should be two lengths of curtains, plus 20-25 cm. You can make a lifting mechanism using two nylon cords: the first is three sheets long, the second is three sheet lengths plus the width of the product.

Tools for work

  • two slats along the length of the opening or glass;
  • sewing machine;
  • screwdriver;
  • screws;
  • Double-sided tape.

For the first step-by-step instructions you will additionally need:

  • stapler for furniture;
  • tapes.

For the second step-by-step instructions

  • ribbons;
  • two plastic rings;
  • two nylon cords.

Step-by-step instructions: creating curtains with garter tape

  • Step #1. We sew the resulting fabrics from the wrong side along the length and only on one side along the width. You should end up with a bag. We turn it inside out and iron all the seams.
  • Step #2. We take a weighting material (in our case it’s a strip) and carefully fold one part of the unstitched edge, making a pocket in which the strip will be located. Sew up the remaining part of the curtain (top of the bag). The bottom of the curtain is ready.

  • Step #3. We fasten the upper part with furniture stapler to the remaining block.
  • Step #4. We attach pre-prepared garter tapes, designed to hold the rolled curtain roll, to the top bar; this can be done with a stapler. You should get a ribbon hanging from the outside and inside.

The roller blind is ready, all that remains is to fix it on the window, screw the lower part with the weight until required length and secure the bottom of the curtain with ribbons.

Step-by-step instructions: creating curtains with a side cord

  • Step #1. We sew the fabrics from the wrong side along the length. We make a pocket at the top and bottom.
  • Step #2. We insert the strip into the bottom pocket and fix it there, and on the top side we sew plastic rings onto ribbons. You should retreat 15 cm from the edges, and sew approximately 5 cm from the top edge.
  • Step #3. To make a mechanism for raising such a curtain, you should fix it on the window or in the window opening with hooks.

  • Step #4. Tie the first nylon cord (smaller) to the hook and pass it through the pocket with the rail. Thread it through the ring.
  • Step #5. The second cord (which is longer) is fixed in the same way, only it must pass through two rings sequentially.
  • Step #6. Nylon cords are collected and fastened. Now, when they are pulled, the curtain will twist due to the counterweight. The cords are fixed on the wall.

Roller blinds are easy to install. If you plan to attach them to plastic frame, use a good wide double-sided tape, and if such a curtain will hang in the window opening, you can secure it with screws and a screwdriver.

Typically, specially treated polyester is used for roller curtains. Thanks to treatment with an antistatic substance, dust does not settle on the material, and thanks to modern dyes, curtains can have metallic or mother-of-pearl shades.

Teflon-coated fabrics have dirt- and water-repellent properties. They will be an excellent choice for the kitchen, loggia and veranda. Also, roller curtains can be made of fire-resistant material.

All substances impregnating the fabric are not harmful to the body and must have supporting certificates.
