Wooden swing gates. Antique wooden gates with forging elements Antique wooden gates

Wooden gates are considered optimal in terms of price, reliability and appearance. They are cheaper than forged ones and much more attractive than profiled sheet doors. How to build a wooden gate with your own hands?

Advantages of wood as a material

Wood as a gate material has many advantages:

  • it is easy to process, lighter than metal,
  • it is available material
  • it is beautiful and durable.

Usually use conifers, since the resin naturally protects the wood from water, fungus and decay. In addition, the coniferous tree has a beautiful structure. Resin can come to the surface from heat, forming drops, but this is a minor drawback. Most often used:

  • pine - it is distinguished by a small number of branches and a straight trunk, so it is easy to process pine, however, it is difficult to color;
  • spruce - has a homogeneous structure, so metal fasteners hold well in it, spruce is light and durable, its wood is quite light, the disadvantage is a porous structure, due to which spruce is more susceptible to decay than, for example, pine;
  • larch is a dense, strong and slightly decay-prone wood with a beautiful texture.

They try not to use hardwoods, since such a tree is unstable to moisture. The exception is oak. Photos of beautiful wooden gates are presented below.

Preparation

The site also needs to be prepared. To do this, large stones, bushes are removed, the soil is leveled, breaking hard lumps. If necessary, the site is marked with a cord stretched over pegs.

Support posts must be at least a meter deep into the soil. It is better to make them not wooden, but metal, concrete or brick. The pillars are concreted, while the sashes are hung in place when the concrete has completely set. Metal poles must be painted with anti-corrosion paint before installation, wooden poles must be treated with bitumen, mastic or used oil.

A horizontal beam is installed in the upper part, which will prevent the pillars from warping under the weight of the wings.

Installation of wooden poles

Wooden posts are installed as follows.

  • They drill wells or dig holes 1 m deep. The distance between them should be slightly more than the width of the gate leaf, and the width of the pit should be 20 cm more than the thickness of the pillar. The width of the gates is made at least 3.5 m, and the gates - at least 1.2 m.
  • At the bottom of the pits, 5 cm of sand are poured and spilled with water to compact it.
  • Next, pour 5 cm of crushed stone.
  • The lower part of the pillars is treated with an antiseptic, bitumen, mastic, oil or burned with a burner or blowtorch to prevent rotting.
  • Pillars are installed in pits strictly vertically, along a plumb line. It's better to do it together.
  • The sinuses of the pit are covered with rubble and rammed.
  • Then the pillars are concreted with a liquid cement solution.

frame

How to make a wooden gate? First you need to assemble the frame for the sashes.

To make a simple wooden frame sashes, for each sash you will need:

  • 2 beams for horizontal beams,
  • 2 vertical bars,
  • 2 beams for jumpers.

Usually, the sash lining protrudes 20-30 cm from the top and bottom of the frame.

Do-it-yourself gate frame is connected by fastening into a spike. Additionally, the joints are reinforced with self-tapping screws or dowels. The frame is assembled by placing it on a flat surface.

In the middle of the frame, an additional jumper is made for structural rigidity. Mowing is made in the corners. They are bars 30-40 cm long with ends cut at 45 degrees.

You can also make one or two diagonal jumpers. If two jumpers are made crosswise, one of them is sawn into two parts of the required size. The figure shows the frame options.

sheathing

Do-it-yourself wooden gates are sheathed with boards, slats or a picket fence. Practical and cheap gates are obtained from a stretched over a frame mesh netting. However natural wood much stronger, more beautiful and more reliable.

Boards can be connected to furniture board, attach close to each other or at some distance - it depends on your idea and on the purpose of the gate. If the boards will be fastened with a gap, they must be the same width, the distance between them must also be the same. You can use a template for this.

Before attaching to the frame, the boards are treated with antiseptics and insecticidal agents. Then they are attached to the frame with screws or nails.

Do-it-yourself wooden gates can be made of any height. At the top, you can add a decorative grille.

Can be attached to the skin various decorations, for example, carved wooden or forged.

Process the tree after the installation of the valves. To do this, the surface is ground, all shells and fallen knots are covered with putty on wood. After the putty dries, the gates are sanded again - first with fine sandpaper and then small.

The wood is then tinted and sanded again. Then a primer is applied.

After the primer dries, the first coat of varnish is applied, and when it dries, the second.

Attention! For processing, only varnish for outdoor use is used, pay attention to this when buying.

If you want to make a gate with forging, the decorations are attached after the second layer of varnish has dried. For strength, the joints of metal and wood are coated with sealant. For a longer service life of wooden gates, they are covered with drying oil and oil paint.

They hang the gate on lancet loops - they are more reliable. The sashes must be located at a distance of at least 5 cm from the ground - then snow and ice in winter will not prevent them from opening and closing.

Gate

The gate is made according to the same principles as the gate leaves. It is smaller and lighter, so the frame for it can be fastened with metal corners. The frame is tried on to the opening, and if it freely enters it, it is sheathed with boards or a picket fence. Then the upper part of the boards is cut with a jigsaw to the required length. After that, the gate is hung on hinges.

Antique gate

The basic design of the gate was described above, on its basis you can come up with your own options, including making gates antique or in a different style. Antique wooden gate photo can be seen below. The old style implies the presence of forged jewelry and rather massive forms. For the manufacture of gates, high-quality pine timber with a thickness of 11-13 cm is used, the finished structure is covered with drying oil or varnish.

Doors ... Perhaps one of the most mysterious inventions of mankind. You never know what is hidden behind them: the door can open the way to the unknown beauty or, closing, destroy dreams forever.

What's behind the old doors? Precious treasure or scary mummy? Interesting? In this article we will tell you about the oldest and unusual doors and gates, as well as interesting facts associated with them.

This door is said to be the oldest working door in the world. It closes the entrance to the archives of Westminster Abbey (England) approximately from 1040. There was a legend that the tree was lined with human skin, but chemical analysis disproved this eerie theory - the coating turned out to be a cowhide.

At the end of the 20th century, doors made at least five thousand years ago were found in Zurich (they are considered the oldest in the world). The poplar from which they are made is well preserved, and the carving turned out to be so thin and unusual that for more than 10 years copies of these artifacts have been among the most sought after for interior design in Europe.

The most beautiful are the doors of the baptismal of St. John (Florence, Italy). They were made in the 15th century and are decorated with bronze bas-reliefs and miniatures from biblical and Old Testament scenes of amazingly fine workmanship.

In the 18th-19th centuries, mahogany came into fashion, and Italian masters, successfully combining them with bronze, began to create masterpieces of carpentry, which still amaze with their beauty.

By the way, the doors acquired a modern appearance (design using elongated frames with inserted stained-glass windows or glasses) only in the 18th century thanks to French masters- the Parisian aristocrats really wanted to show off their wealth: it was for this purpose that large panoramic glass inserts on the front doors were invented.

Very unusual specimens can be seen in Spain, where the "Moorish invasion" had a great influence on the development of culture and crafts. In modern Andalusia, houses are still preserved, in the external decoration of which Arabic sensuality and European thoroughness are intricately intertwined. And since the doors are the "face" of the building, they also bear the echo of these intricacies.

Fancy ornaments reminiscent of fine lace, bright or contrasting colors and a semicircular vault, most often, are characteristics of oriental or Arabic doors. The owner of the house decorated the entrance with everyone accessible ways: with forged flowers or bronze tips, painting or firing - it was the door that was originally supposed to tell the guest about the wealth and status of the owner.

It would be strange to ignore the Land of the Rising Sun - its original culture was also manifested in home interior. The doors for wealthy houses were minimalist and solid and were made of wood very expensive in Japan, and the entrance of the dwellings was more modestly closed with plywood panels painted with floral motifs.

The fantasy of the master is boundless and is embodied in the most various materials: wood, stone, metal, glass. Sometimes the thought arises: “If such a door is in this house, then what is inside there?” Isn’t it?

There is another creation of human hands that blocks access to an uninvited guest - the gate. Both wooden, iron, and forged, they are designed to protect our home, but skillful craftsmen, in addition to their main function, give these products such bizarre shapes that their beauty and unusualness are sometimes breathtaking.

It is believed that the first forged gates with a mechanism were made in Spain. Their author (Antonio Gaudi) was no stranger to mechanics, and he provided a huge iron dragon sitting on the bars of the frame with a toothy mouth that opened along with the gate leaves. Currently, the mechanism is completely out of order, but anyone can admire the magnificent creation in Barcelona, Spain.

In the period from the 15th to the 18th centuries. in Europe, the baroque style was very popular (Italian - “unnecessarily bizarre, strange). All buildings built in those days were heavily decorated with statues, stucco, frescoes, coats of arms, etc. This cup and the gate did not pass: there is no free space on bright examples of ancient splendor - volunts, coats of arms, acanthus, crowns almost completely cover metal carcass gate.

However, in the 19th century, the graceful lines of the revived “modern” and the newborn “art nouveau” began to replace the intricate forged lace of the “baroque”, and the simplicity of the curves and the low cost of the products put an end to the spread of the ruinous aristocratic style for a long time.

The most unusual gates, made of coral blocks, were built by the owner of the Coral Manor at the beginning of the 20th century in the US state of Florida. Unhappily in love with an American of Latvian origin, he built a whole castle for his beloved, but she never reciprocated.

The human genius was able to come up with a sensor, automation and an electric drive, but not a single modern technology carries the main thing: particles of the soul and warmth of the hands of the Master, embodying his plan in seemingly ordinary things. And then these items become real masterpieces, which we told you about in our article.

antique

IN Lately you can often find estates that are fenced with antique gates. Such designs are examples of ancient blacksmithing. , massive castles performed in retro style. Look especially nice curly loops on a wooden canvas and are perfect for forged gate with a tree. small decor gives the impression of ancient structures. To save uniform style In “antique” estates, blacksmiths offer to hang not only gates on such hinges, but also a gate, window shutters.

gate to vintage style are made using patination, an original design technique in which a special coating is applied to the metal surface. The master applies powder paint to the surface of the metal, thereby imitating the touch of antiquity.

This complex handmade , which requires a high level of professionalism from the blacksmith and adherence to clear rules for the implementation of the technique. Sometimes home owners want to decorate their gates with curly door hinges.

Cold and hot forging

Gates can be made without preheating the metal, using the method. Such technology requires less cost . In the heat treatment of metal, an anvil and a forge are used. Here, the master requires special knowledge and the ability to handle it.

Distinguish pre-forging, which prepares the starting material for rolling and deformation. Followed by blacksmithing: upsetting and upsetting, broaching, spinning on a mandrel, piercing, bending and twisting. By using product takes shape. In cold forging, blanks are bent and adjusted, assembled into a single composition, and welded. Finished items, as a rule, have no special artistic value and can be performed independently.

The production of gates by cold forging is carried out by connecting all the elements into a single whole. You can create your own parts at home. This will require metalworking machines. It is also important to take into account the factor that independent work there is an opportunity to create unique details. You can avoid stamping and standard design, which is typical for factory production.

All photos from the article

Is it difficult to make antique wood gates? What types of wood are preferred for their creation? What retro style attributes can be used and how to give the surface of the tree the look of an old product?

Let's figure it out.

Choice of lumber

Types and scope

First, let's decide what materials we will have to purchase.

  • A wide (15 - 20 centimeters) board 25 - 30 mm thick will be used to sheathe the frame of the future gate.
  • A beam measuring 100x50 mm will become the basis of this frame.
  • For pillars (if, of course, they are needed), we use a bar with a section of 100x100.

To clarify: for the construction of pillars, you can, of course, use a round or shaped steel pipe. However, our goal is to make future gates not only durable, but also stylish; wooden poles more appropriate in this sense.

To calculate the volume of lumber, willy-nilly, you will have to sketch out a sketch indicating the dimensions that are relevant to you.

Some values, however, are universal:

  • The optimal width of double-leaf gates is 3.5 - 4 meters. A sash width of more than 2 meters will mean an excessive load on the poles and canopies, as well as a large windage in the wind; a significant reduction in size will not allow the car to enter the yard at an angle other than a straight one, which is not always convenient.
  • A reasonable maximum gate height is 2 meters. It will hide your yard from indiscreet looks from the street and, again, will not make the sashes excessively heavy.
  • The poles on which the sashes are hung must be four meters high. One and a half meters will go into the ground; an elevation of half a meter above the doors will allow in the future to build a canopy resting on the pillars above the gate, protecting them from rain.

Wood species

Traditionally, pine is used for the construction of wooden structures: along with spruce, it is one of the cheapest species and, unlike Christmas trees, is not replete with knots.

In our case, however, it will not be the best option:

  1. Light pine wood does not differ in mechanical strength. Gates should not only perform decorative functions, but also prevent intruders from entering the yard.
  2. Pine is not very rot resistant. Meanwhile, she will have to constantly resist the weather and contact with moisture.

Even more winning solutions are oak and ash. The solid cost of both breeds (about 40,000 rubles per cubic meter) is compensated by the highest strength, excellent texture pattern and almost unlimited service life.

Not a single tree

Along with solid wood gates, gates made of metal can represent a magnificent antique style - only the filling of the leaves is made of wood. Above, we did not recommend using with wooden structure steel pipes due to the fact that they will get out of the retro style; however, decorated with artistic forging metal poles and others structural elements will fully comply with it.

Wood and metal are connected by bolts with semi-secret uncut heads: the frame is drilled, after which the boards are attracted to it by two to four fasteners. The nut, as you might guess, remains with inside gate.

For greater compliance with the chosen style, forged overhead canopies, latches and door handles are used.

Metal art forging is an ancient craft that has stood the test of time. Despite the fact that it has very ancient roots, the products of forging masters are still in great demand. Over the years of its existence, blacksmith forging has reached the heights art, harmoniously combining elements of modernity and antiquity. It is this combination of advantages that makes forged things preferable when choosing interior items or arranging a summer cottage, a mansion, an apartment.

Thanks to the great variety of techniques, the inexhaustible imagination of craftsmen and designers, each forged work is a work of art that will not only decorate the interior or exterior of the estate, but also make it unique. It is always luxurious, fashionable, original.

To paraphrase famous quote“the theater begins with a hanger”, we can safely say that the house begins with a gate. This is the most important element of the mansion, cottage, country house. His face, business card, presentation. Appearance The entrance to the estate can tell a lot about financial opportunities, position in society, solidity, character, aesthetic taste and sense of style of its owner. Therefore, those who opt for wrought iron gates receive only excellent marks for all of the above items.

Gate with forging in retro style from "Alois"

Each forged product made in our forges is unique and original in its own way. Blacksmith craftsmen have learned to create works of such beauty, from the contemplation of which is truly breathtaking. Forged gates, made in retro style, look like real antiques. They are able to compete with museum exhibits, yielding to them only in price. But you should not be afraid that your design decision forged item will stand out from general style homestead furnishing. Products blacksmith forging and they are good because they are in perfect harmony with interior items, decoration or cladding made from other natural or artificial materials.

Another advantage of wrought iron gates is reliability. Despite the apparent openwork and airiness, the gates made by forging are strong, durable and stable. The starting material is pre-hardened. Therefore, forged products are resistant to temperature and force effects. For finishing finished products our company uses professional coatings, giving certain color effects and protecting against corrosion.

The masters of our company are able to forge gates of various engineering solutions.

  • The most common type is swing gates. This is a familiar design - simple, convenient and reliable. The sliding version of the wrought iron gate involves the opening of the leaves not relative to the central axis, but along the guides, which allows you to free up usable area.
  • Another innovative solution is sliding gates. Ideal when space is limited in the entry area.
  • It is also possible to manufacture combined gates in a combination of wood and metal, which implies a lot of options for the manifestation of imagination and the use of design techniques. Considering that the service life of wood is much shorter than that of metal, the gates are designed in such a way that wooden elements could be replaced if necessary.

Our company is highly responsible for quality assurance at all stages of forged products manufacturing, making serious demands on the title of "master". Whichever option you prefer, remember that antique is a sign that you are keeping up with the times.
