The platbands are carved wooden stencils. Do-it-yourself window platbands: we install home-made wooden platbands. Production of platbands for windows

Making your home memorable and beautiful is the dream of any owner. If the house is no longer new, it is not so easy. One of the possibilities is carved platbands. They even turn an ordinary “box” into a masterpiece.

Trim material

Carved architraves made mainly from softwood. The best option is pine, it is normally cut, inexpensive, and durable due to the high resin content. In principle, you can use any other coniferous board, but it is better not to try with a spruce board: it is too fibrous, it cannot be cut even with the sharpest tool.

You can make carved platbands from hardwood- linden (the softest), poplar, maple, oak, cherry, etc. But with each breed you need to be able to work, fill your hand and there is no guarantee that something digestible will turn out, and hardwood is expensive. Therefore, platbands are made on windows more often all the same from pine. You just need to pay attention to the quality characteristics.

Carved window frames - a way to make your home unique

If there is wood or a board that has lain for 3 years or more, you can use it: it is already dry for sure, only processing and calibration will be required. If there is no woodworking equipment at home (thickness gauge and circular saw), you will need edged board. Under carved platbands, wood of the first or highest grade is suitable. This means that there should be no knots, chips, resin pockets on the board. Take wood chamber drying, with a moisture content of not more than 8-12%. This is not for sale in the markets; you need to look for it at sawmills and hardware stores.

Why chamber drying? Because it is dried in special chamber, rapidly removing moisture. At the same time, part of the boards cracks, bends - these go to rejection, the rest are sold. If you make carved architraves from chamber-dried wood, they will definitely not be warped and they will not crack.

Tools

To make carved platbands with your own hands, you will need the following minimum set:

  • drill with a set of drills;
  • electric jigsaw with a soft start and a bunch of different saws for wood;
  • chisels;
  • sandpaper with grain different size;
  • petal disk from sandpaper for wood on a drill.

These are the carved platbands on the windows you can do with your own hands

To reduce the time it takes to create carved patterns and polishing, it is better to have a router and grinder.

One by one or in bulk?

Carved platbands usually consist of repeating elements. At least two vertical slats on each window are made the same. And since several windows are usually designed, a lot of identical elements are required. If you are going to make platbands slotted, naturally there is a desire to cut several pieces at the same time, folding the boards in a pile and somehow fixing them.

Overhead carved platbands are also interesting

The desire is understandable, but difficult to implement, and the benefits over time are not as great as it seems. The first difficulty is that home craftsmen usually have jigsaws of not too much power. To cut through several boards, you have to move the file more slowly along the intended pattern. On straight lines, the speed is still tolerable, on curves - low. And, the smaller the bending radius, the slower you have to move the file. If you work with one board, there are no such problems. So in terms of time, the gain, if any, is quite small.

One more moment. Even thick, good, expensive files are rejected with a large thickness of the workpiece. So, when cutting several boards at the same time, the quality of the cut on the bottom (or two) remains a big question.

The procedure for manufacturing a platband with a slotted thread

We transfer the desired drawing using a template to the board (where to get it, how to enlarge it, how to make a template, read below). If necessary, we correct, draw the details well. Next, we describe the procedure step by step.

Slotted carving without backing board. To make the drawing clearer, you need a big difference in color

We remove wood in the slots of the pattern

  • To do this, drill holes large diameter where the wood needs to be removed. The diameter of the hole should be slightly larger than the width of the jigsaw blade (usually 12-14 mm). The drill should go vertically down, make sure that the hole does not go beyond the line (but small errors are not terrible).

Here is the main stage of cutting the platband from wood

Since the carving will be looked at from afar, some inaccuracies are not fatal, but it is still worth striving for the ideal.

Making a curved edge

Some platbands have a smooth edge. Then we skip this step. If the edge is curly, you will still have to work with a jigsaw.

    After about 5-7 cm, we make perpendicular cuts of the “extra” part of the board to the intended line of the casing. Great precision or even lines are not needed, we try not to cross the drawn line.

The curly edge is easier to make

If the cut is difficult, not very attractive places may remain. It's not scary, we'll process them later, where necessary - with chisels, the same jigsaw, emery. When you are satisfied with the result, you can move on.

Finalization

Owners of wooden houses probably know everything about how to process wood. But, just in case, we repeat once again the general rules.

    We grind. Grind by any available method. Faster and best of all - with an eccentric sander, slower - with an emery wheel on a drill and a petal nozzle, very slowly - with your hands and sandpaper. Ideally, we combine two methods - with the help of a grinder we process a horizontal surface, and the recesses - with a petal nozzle and, where it is missing, with our hands.

Grind and bring to a normal state

Choice paintwork materials very wide. Suitable for any outdoor use. But keep in mind that opaque paints will have to be updated periodically - once a year for sure. And that means taking old paint primer, paint again. The situation is simpler with oils for wood - they do not leave a film on the surface of the wood, but are absorbed into the fibers. It is also necessary to update the coating, but just clean it of dust and cover with a new layer. And the processing frequency is less. Cons of oil for wood - higher price, fewer colors.

How to enlarge a template

Simple carved platbands can be made without templates. A few examples will be in the video - it shows how to draw, how to cut. But not everyone can draw more or less complex patterns on their own. It takes skill and talent. The easiest way is to find a diagram, print it in the right size, transfer it to cardboard and cut it out. You will get a template that you can circle.

The second way: draw from a photograph. Not all schemes can be found. Some, especially antique window frames, you will not find anywhere else. If there is at least some drawing ability, they can be copied.

Even such an ornament can be copied ... if you have the skill

You may have questions about how to increase the size of the found scheme or template. There are three options:

  • With the help of any graphic editor. The simplest - Paint - is on any computer running Windows (tab "Image", line "Resize image", select "centimeters" and put in the box desired length(height). The resulting file can be printed. If your printer is small, you may need to split multiple pages. Then they should be glued and, according to the resulting drawing, make a template.
  • With a photocopy. Copiers have a zoom function.
  • Taking graph paper, transfer the drawing to the desired scale. To do this, we divide the original image into squares with a side of 0.5 or 1 cm (you can print it on a sheet in a cage). Then we transfer the lines to graph paper, increasing them in the desired proportion.

The first two methods are faster. But when scaling, the picture may turn out to be fuzzy and blurry. It can be corrected by hand, it can be drawn in some editor, for example, CorelDRAW. See the video for how to do this. Just an example of drawing a diagram for a thread.

Instructions for making a stencil for platbands on windows

Beautiful things are the weakness of every person, and if they are made with their own hands, pride in oneself overwhelms the senses. It is to such creativity that woodcarving can be attributed. How original and unique your house looks with carved architraves, where the owner put a particle of his soul into the work.

What is a cashier? It has the form of a decorative overlay and is mounted on the outside of the window and is an ornament where a decorative technique is used.

It can be:

  1. Plants showing unity with nature.
  2. The sun, located on the kokoshnik, personifies energy and life.
  3. Earrings indicating the hospitality of the owner of the house.
  4. The cross, symbolizing the harmony between the spiritual and material world.
  5. A bird that speaks of the unification of all time.
  6. A snake representing fertility and wisdom.
  7. Wings, confirming strength and power.

Platbands are different in style, material, shape. They are the completion of construction, which emphasizes the individuality and style of the home. And at the same time, they perfectly mask all the flaws of the opening (slit).

Application area

Widespread use of framing around various openings has found itself in doors and windows. The location of the slats can be both on the outside of the street and indoors.

Basically, platbands of the same type are installed, but the thread may differ. And at the same time, a common theme is preserved. For example, in a children's room, the plank will be with a bunny. Flowers are carved around it. Then in the kitchen a bear cub should also be framed with the same flowers.

Now considered a brand plastic double-glazed windows. Some people manage to put a wooden plank on them. In this case, you need to paint it white or choose a double-glazed window made of wood.

The slats around the window opening perform some functions:

  1. Combine all the buildings in the yard into a single style.
  2. Reduce heat loss.
  3. Protect from dust and litter, moisture, draft.
  4. Increase sound insulation.
  5. I emphasize the uniqueness of the residential building.
  6. An opportunity to express the traditions of the region, family, country.
  7. The ability to visually stretch and expand the house.
  8. They complete the building.
  9. Close the mounting seams.

If we consider the platbands by material, they can be from:

  • tree;
  • metal;
  • plastic;
  • foam and polyurethane;

By form:

Before starting work, it is worth stocking up on templates or stencils of carved platbands, without their help it is impossible to achieve an excellent result. And to perform your work without them is available only to a master who has been working on wood carving for more than one year.

You can get stencils for today freely - these are in stores, magazines, and the Internet.

They can be applied to any pattern that the customer or the master wishes. Contours of plants, figurines of animals, ornaments of geometric lines and figures are very popular.

The style of the product can be different, and here the most unusual fantasies of the performer are realized.

How to do?

Stencils are made in different ways:

  1. With the help of a graphic editor. The desired image is found and processed in Photoshop. Every computer has the Paint application, it is used for editing, coloring and drawing. By visiting this page, you can design personal images ranging from simple to complex projects. It is possible to add text and various elements to existing picture files.
  2. Photocopies. A picture is selected that you really liked and when copied, it immediately increases to the desired size. The second option is to scan and print the sample on a printer.
  3. By hand. It uses the technology of scaling (copying) and by cells (linear scaling).

Thread making

We make a template from cardboard, the size should be natural. A personal template is made for all elements of the drawing.

Now, you need to lay it on the board and circle the outline with a pencil.

We outline the places for the holes. Let's say you need to cut a leaf. To begin with, a hole is drilled, then a leaf appears with a jigsaw. Following the holes, we make all the internal patterns, then move on to the external ornament.

There is a copying method for drawing a picture. Here we use carbon paper. We trace the drawing through it onto the board and get a pattern on the wood.

Required tools:

  • sandpaper of various numbers;
  • jigsaw;
  • drill with a set of drills;
  • a set of chisels;

Instruction:

  1. We make the pattern the same on all windows. To do this, use a stencil or sketch.
  2. We place the drawing on the workpiece correctly, where we place all the elements not across the fibers, but along. That will not allow the thread to crack.
  3. We paint over the slotted areas with a pencil.

Wood carving is done in two ways:

  1. Invoice. In this option, we use a thinner workpiece, then the work is simplified. Here we make separate elements, which we will then fold on a single board.
  2. slotted. In this case, we make a cut through, we get a kind of lace, which is exquisite and beautifully frames the window.

Platband installation

create beautiful product- this is one thing. But properly fixing it to the window is another.

aesthetic appearance, and long term service closely depends on the quality of installation of platbands.

There are two ways to mount on wooden windows:

  1. Through spike. The method is simple and not very reliable. Spikes should be installed in places where they will be invisible. This provides additional moisture protection.
  2. Silent spike. The spike goes into the casing. Whereas a hole is drilled in the frame for it. It is necessary to lubricate the spike with glue and bring it into the groove. Fastening is considered difficult, but it is more reliable than the first method.

Walkthrough:

  1. We take measurements from the window.
  2. Choose a type of wood and dry it well. The choice of width and height does not play a big role for carved platbands, the main thing is that the thickness is 3 cm. This is if the thread will be slotted, for the invoice - 1 cm.
  3. We process the tree with sandpaper, starting with coarse-grained, and at the end with zero.
  4. Cut out stencils.
  5. We take a simple pencil and apply a drawing or pattern on the front side of a wooden surface. We paint through the cuts.
  6. Let's start cutting out the pattern. Let's start with the through holes. Where the jigsaw will enter, it is advisable to use a drill for a more accurate cut.
  7. The holes are carefully processed with sandpaper.
  8. To remove dust from blind holes, use a vacuum cleaner.
  9. When using overhead thread elements, we fasten them to nails without hats. And, for reliability, let's go through the glue on the back side.
  10. Now take a damp rag and wipe the pattern until the area is completely dedusted.
  11. The finishing operation will be considered a stain, with which we will tint the platband or cover it immediately with varnish.

  1. If you are just starting to work on a stencil on a platband pattern, you should choose a simpler pattern with large shapes. The smaller the drawing, the more complex it is. It is good to try elements of the pattern from through holes.
  2. Open elements are cut with a jigsaw.
  3. Beech, larch and oak are expensive and difficult to process, but they have long term services.
  4. The easiest to process is a material such as linden.
  5. The material most commonly used is pine.

Patterns of carved platbands for windows

The tradition of decorating windows with carved platbands has come from ancient times. It was believed that window decoration with fancy patterns not only protects the room from drafts and cold, but also serves as a kind of protective amulet from evil spirits or the evil eye.

What pattern to choose on the platband

Home-made carved platbands are a type of decorative trim that frames windows or doors from the outside. This ensures that the gap above the frame is closed, and the appearance of the window and facade becomes complete and attractive. The openwork patterns with which our ancestors decorated not only platbands, but also other household items had a magical meaning.

It was believed that evil spirits could penetrate through the windows, and the architraves, decorated with special symbols, protect the house and family from misfortunes and attract good luck.

Ancient carved ornaments and drawings of the masters of the past have come down to our times and continue to be used in carved products as a beautiful decorative technique to add color to the house and interior. Here are some meanings of the symbols and patterns on the platbands:

An example of a carved window casing with snakes

  • Bird. The symbol of the keeper of time, it was believed that the souls of the dead inhabit the birds, and in order to protect themselves from troubles through a deceased ancestor, images of birds were applied to the architraves.
  • Wings. Ancient strong symbol. It was believed that the house, the windows of which are decorated with such a casing, is under special protection.
  • Plants and flowers. Platbands with plant and flower motifs signify unity with nature.
  • Even a beginner with carpentry skills can make carved platbands for windows with their own hands. The main thing is to choose simple patterns for the first works. In the manufacture of carved platbands, you can apply the experience of previous generations and come up with a composition for window decoration using ready-made stencils and templates for woodcarving.

    How to make a stencil for a platband

    A stencil is a device for applying the same patterns and symbols to the desired surface. Before starting work on the manufacture of platbands, you will need to get stencils and templates. Finding a sketch for a carved platband is not difficult - they can be downloaded for free and in a wide variety on the Internet, purchased in specialized stores or found in magazines.

    IN ready-made stencils and templates can be made on paper, cardboard or wood fiber. They only need to be attached to the surface of the future casing and circled. There are several ways to make a stencil yourself:

    Here you can create an individual sketch for carved architraves. The complexity of the drawing will depend on the skill level of woodcarving.

  • Make a photocopy or print an ornament for the casing. The drawing you like is enlarged to the desired size when copied or printed. The resulting paper stencil can be transferred to a tree.
  • If there is no printer (and the desire to look for it), you can do the following. First, the desired scale of the pattern is selected on the computer, the paper is applied to the monitor, and the translucent contours of the pattern are outlined with a marker or felt-tip pen without strong pressure on the screen. If the drawing does not fit completely on the screen, you need to move it and continue drawing the stencil.
  • Manually - by scaling by cells. Using linear scaling, the pattern is copied cell by cell. In this case, you can change the proportion of the pattern. To increase the size, the scale of the cells is increased, and the drawing is copied in larger cells than the cells of the source.

    Clypeus scaling by cells

    Stencils and templates are the main assistants in creating carved platbands. In the drawing, you need to take into account which pattern will be chosen for the various components of the casing.

    Carved platbands include the following main details:

    • top trim;
    • vertical slats of the casing or frame;
    • bottom bar or profiled window sill.

    These are just the main elements, carved platbands can include many more decorative details: a diadem, coat hangers, flowerpots, and so on.

    Transferring the contour of the drawing to the workpiece

    After the sketch is created, you need to make a stencil directly, onto which all the elements of the pattern for carved platbands are transferred. You can transfer a contour to a workpiece in the following ways:

    Cutting a platband according to a template

    1. The most common way is when the pattern is cut out of thick paper or cardboard. The resulting templates are applied to the board and traced along the contour with a pen, felt-tip pen or pencil.
    2. The stencil can not be cut out, but transferred to future platbands through carbon paper.
    3. You can push the outline of the sketch through the paper onto the tree with a pen (leaving an inconspicuous trace). You can make the outline clearer without carbon paper by applying a layer of graphite on the back of the sheet with a soft, simple pencil.

    You need to place stencils on the workpiece along the fibers of the tree: in the future, the thread of such a casing will not crack. For convenience, the places where the cuts will be made can be made colored.

    Templates and stencils for carved architraves are presented in large quantities - these are simple repeating ornaments, images of animals, plants, and even entire paintings.

    When choosing a pattern for platbands, remember:

    1. Beginners should choose the lightest patterns with large elements that will be easy to cut out. Pictures and fantasy ornaments are not for those who first took up the cutter.
    2. To make carved architraves neat and beautiful, you need to carefully transfer the pattern from the template and use only patterns intended for the slotted carving technique.

    Just as a real artist does not start creating a picture without a sketch, so a carving master does not work without a template. The choice and manufacture of a stencil is the first step at the beginning of a rather complicated and painstaking path to create carved wood products.

    To facilitate your work, it is important to choose the right type of wood. The final form of the product and the time spent on manufacturing depend on this. Pine is suitable for simple products, and more complex products will be made from soft wood.

    • Linden has an attractive color, it is easy to process, but there is a drawback. Such wood is hygroscopic. If it is of poor quality or improperly processed, not provided with proper care, then the platband from it will quickly become unusable.
    • Solid woods are more durable, but birch, oak or beech are many times more difficult to process. such wood is suitable for frequent climate changes and high or low humidity, you will need a milling machine, experience is needed to work with this wood.

    When making platbands, we prepare stencils and templates in advance. Vertical elements are different from horizontal ones. In addition, it is worth knowing that the masters call the upper part of the casing with additional patterns a kokoshnik. We select a high-quality tool, with its help the work will be easier.

    Equipment and tools

    Before preparing the stencil, we take out the necessary tools. It is not necessary to cut the platbands with a penknife; we purchase tools in a specialized store.

    • Manual or electric jigsaw, it is easier to operate with it. Its price is higher.
    • For making seams and eyes, you will need a special tenoning tool.
    • Two knives - a jamb and a cutter are necessary for making window trims, you can download stencils for which you can directly from our article.
    • Also needed for work will be a flat chisel, 0.7-2 centimeters, it also comes with a semicircular and round 2.5 centimeters. It does not hurt to get cranberries and Caesars and corner views similar tools. Regarding the application, consult the seller, such stores take people who are savvy and experienced.

    The secret of this kind of work is that it is possible to create wooden architraves, according to patterns and pictures, without having the practical skills of woodcarving. To make your life easier and save time, it is advantageous to use stencils, this reduces the time for manufacturing a finished decorative element.

    At the first stage, the main frame is assembled from pre-prepared wood, the dimensions of which correspond to the perimeter of the window opening. The inner perimeter of the frame exceeds the opening by at least two centimeters, but at the same time, do not forget that the gap between window frame and the wall needs to be hidden under the casing.

    It is worth remembering that no matter what type of windows are installed in the house, the sashes should in no case interfere with their ninety-degree opening. You can fix the carved platband on a pre-mounted frame using the same spikes cut from the same material.

    • It is better to cut simple templates for platbands with your own hands from thick cardboard in full size, and then, attach to the wood, simply trace around the contour with a simple pencil. You can also use carbon paper if the pattern is made for plain paper.
    • When working with a jigsaw, carefully and clearly cut out the curly elements of the pattern along the lines.
    • On the outside of the outline of the pattern, you need to carefully ensure that the canvas passes just along the edge of the workpiece.
    • You will also need to go through the internal patterns, and for this you will inevitably have to turn the saw blade. To do this, you can specifically make a loop, or you can simply make several parallel cuts. It is better to choose a modern electric jigsaw of high quality and with great functionality, because the possibilities increase proportionally.
    • It is easy to make internal patterns by pre-drilling a hole where necessary, it will be easier to work from this place, and you can turn the canvas in any direction.

    When the curves and bulges of the pattern on the architraves are sawn out, the work is considered finished. If desired, you can ennoble the surface by walking on it with sandpaper. We also process the wood before mounting the platbands on the windows so that they do not quickly become unusable. To do this, we purchase special antiseptics, stains, varnishes or paints.

    Stencils for woodcarving: trims for windows, simple tips and tricks

    It seems that there is nothing complicated and you can immediately get to work after reading the article. However, it doesn’t hurt to listen to useful tips and recommendations that experts in their field give, and they know what’s what.

    Photo from the site: Bouw.ru

    • It is better to choose boards for platbands, no more than three, maximum four, centimeters thick. The blanks will be easy to cut, sand and attach to the frame.
    • You should not take on super-complex and ultra-beautiful patterns and ancient ornaments from the very first day. Start with something simpler, and only then move on to more complex.
    • Please note that the width should be enough to cover the ends of the opening, to protect it from moisture. To exclude possible cracking, we place the patterns along the wood fibers.
    • For beginners, it is better to choose patterns with large, convex elements that will be easier to make. Small details, and even not well-designed, look untidy and blurry.

    After the wood of the carved platbands has been fully processed, you just need to install them on the windows. You can fix the design various methods, from banal screws to wooden studs, as our ancestors did, building houses without a single nail. The process awaits you for a long time, and the work is painstaking, therefore, if there are doubts about your own abilities, it is better to turn to professionals who will do everything quickly and simply, and then also mount the structure.

    Do-it-yourself carved platbands: step by step photos. Stencils and templates

    How to make a template according to the drawing?

    To make beautiful trim on the windows with your own hands, you will need templates. With their help, the pattern is transferred to the surface of the wood.

    Template creation starts with pattern selection. You can find many options, if you wish, you can copy the pattern from the photo. There are several ways to increase the drawing to the size of the template. If the drawing is in electronic format, then it can be processed in a graphic editor.

    If the drawing is already printed, then you should use one of two methods. The first is photocopying. All copiers can print in scaling and aspect ratio. The second way is manually. You can call it traditional. The pattern is simply redrawn with an increase in cells.

    The resulting enlarged drawing is transferred to cardboard, and then ready-made trim patterns for windows are cut out of it. For each pattern or element, a separate template is made. Then it is placed on the board, from which the platband will be cut out and outlined with a pencil.

    Project

    Design is the basis of any process. If you want to make carved platbands on the windows with your own hands, then you should also start with the design. Performed drawing of the facade of the building with all its details and performed drawing of carved elements. This allows you to imagine the appearance of the building. If there is a visualization program, then you can make a three-dimensional project at home.

    At this stage, materials and tools are prepared. best material are pine boards with a minimum number of knots.

    You can make platbands on windows with your own hands by using:

    • jigsaw with soft start;
    • feather drill with a diameter of 12mm;
    • screwdriver;
    • grinder.

    Sawing

    After the stencils of the platbands on the windows have been circled, the sawing process should begin. First, cut out the internal openwork elements. To do this, holes are drilled along the contour of the image. Drill should be perpendicular to the board.

    After cutting out the inner contour, go to the outer.

    The jigsaw is led from one end of the future casing to the other. Files are made in advance to facilitate the process.

    The result is the finished part. The other side of the window needs to be mirrored.

    Grinding

    In order for the surface to acquire an aesthetic appearance, it is treated with a grinder. An emery wheel with a grit of 80 is used. After that, the part can be painted.

    The wood is susceptible to decay and insect damage, so it is carefully treated before painting. antiseptic. The fewer passes, the longer the platbands will last.

    After applying the composition, the parts are dried. Dry surfaces are painted. The best option is water-based paint for wood. The color is chosen during design. In this case, white and cherry are used.

    Paint with two brushes. The wide one is painted over the outer surface, and the narrow one is designed for the side parts and hard-to-reach places.

    Elements are painted over carefully, in two layers. The second layer is applied when the previous one dries.

    The final layer is varnish. For this purpose, it is better to take acrylic compound having a water base.

    Lacquer is applied in one layer, trying to avoid streaks. Dry parts in the open air.

    Assembly

    All parts are assembled into a common composition before mounting on the window. This sequence is more convenient.

    fastening is carried out according to the sketch on self-tapping screws. They are screwed from the wrong side so as not to spoil the appearance of the platbands.

    Installation

    Direct installation of platbands on the window is carried out using scaffolding. It is safer and more convenient than stairs. Fix the module in place with self-tapping screws.

    Trim stencil options

    When choosing patterns for platbands, you should pay attention to whole line moments. Among them, compatibility with the overall appearance of the house. If wooden platbands on windows are made for the first time with your own hands, then it is better to choose a simpler option.

    Do-it-yourself platband templates

    Previously, each region had its own traditions in window decoration. They can be used now if you want to recall the cultural heritage.

    The role of architraves

    Elements of window trim are often called platbands, but their correct name is cashing. Cashing has many functions. Let's consider the main ones:

    • decorative - the appearance of the windows and the entire facade looks complete, with the help of the casing, you can visually change the proportions of the house;
    • the right ornament helps to express personal preferences or traditions;
    • with the help of platbands, all buildings on the site are combined into a single architectural ensemble;
    • thanks to the platbands, moisture and debris do not get into the gaps between the wall and the frames;
    • heat losses are reduced, since the gaps around the windows are additionally overlapped.

    In the manufacture of platbands, it should be borne in mind that the tree collapses over time. Antiseptic compounds will help prolong his life.

  • The facade is the face of the house, and the windows, the most significant objects, are its eyes. So they require an appropriate attitude towards themselves. The decoration of windows with platbands is paid close attention even with a slight use of elements of house carving, because it is the platbands that give the building a special look, completeness and attractiveness. Thus, if we are talking about houses in the private sector, then, of course, one cannot do without platbands on the windows.

    The purpose of the window frame

    The word "platband" is found in the description of houses in Rus', which dates back to the 15-18 centuries. Today, little is said about the platbands, but they still remain an integral element of the window from the side of the facade and the entire building, regardless of what material the house is built from and what kind of finish it has. An exception may be multi-storey buildings made of concrete or brick, the windows of which are recessed from the outside into the wall, as well as houses with replacement windows.

    At their core, platbands are a frame made of boards, 30 - 40 millimeters thick, which frame the window. However, window trims are not just a decorative design element: they are necessary to close the gap between the window frame and the wall so that heat does not escape, and precipitation and dust do not enter the house, as well as to reduce the level of noise coming from the street. If necessary, the platbands act as a frame for the shutters.

    If we classify window platbands by shape, then curly, flat and rounded platbands, as well as platbands with a convex surface, are distinguished. The most inexpensive and easy to install flat platbands. The platbands, which have a convex surface, are made using special equipment, so the price of platbands for windows of this type is higher. And the most expensive are carved platbands.

    According to the installation method, there are two groups of platbands: telescopic, which have special protrusions that go into the grooves on the box, and overhead platbands. When choosing a casing profile, it is imperative to take into account the slope that exists in the upper part of the casing and allows snow and rain at the top not to accumulate, but to flow down. The most popular at present in form are carved platbands, and in terms of material they are made of plastic.

    Material for window frames

    The design of the facade from the platband requires more than just an aesthetic profile. The platband for the window must be resistant to changes in outside temperature. If we talk about the climatic conditions of the middle zone of our country, then facade elements can heat up to plus 50 degrees in summer, and cool down to minus 35 degrees in winter. In total, the difference between the temperatures to which these elements are exposed on the facade reaches 85 degrees. Therefore, the material from which the architraves are made must withstand such temperature fluctuations, as well as snow, wind and rain.

    Remember that the material should not crack and crumble. In this case, MDF and plywood become unpromising for the manufacture of facade elements. We all know that wood-derived materials absorb water after being installed on the facade, crack when moisture freezes inside, dry out, then the paint peels off, and after a few years such trims have to be changed.

    Therefore, MDF platbands are mainly used inside a house or apartment. The material is characterized by ease of processing and relative cheapness. In addition, such a product can be made in a short time. Well, if you decide to use such platbands for the facade, they must be regularly treated with varnishes and adhesives to protect against moisture and preserve color.

    The upper part of the window casing is decorated with a “kokoshnik”, where it has long been customary to depict the Sun. The upper part, if necessary, can be increased by connecting component parts spikes. The bottom one is called "towels", it must have a water-cutting bevel for a stack of water. The bottom bar should be 10 millimeters thicker than the top bar. The drawing of the lower part should stylistically match the image on the “kokoshnik”.

    To prevent cracking of the thread over time, it is better to place the elements along the wood fibers, this is true, first of all, for conifers. Thin endings and openwork folds are usually short-lived. The simplest cut is a round hole, which is drilled with a drill.

    Therefore, it is preferable to choose patterns that contain a lot of round holes. Most often, the pattern for a carved window trim is a solid ornament, which includes repeating details. Each such repeating element consists of several round and semicircular holes, as well as cutouts of complex shape.

    Stretch the selected ornament along its entire length. To do this, draw a picture on paper in a 1: 1 ratio, you can also print it on a printer. Those areas where the cuts are to be made, mark with a separate color. Glue the drawing onto a piece of wood. Using a drill, drill round holes, giving them the required diameter. Where you need to work with a jigsaw, it is better to drill small holes.

    Making carved architraves

    Naturally, all windows of a residential building should be decorated with the same platbands. Sizes, shapes and patterns must match. Architraves on the windows of a wooden house are made in the form of a solid frame, consisting of several well-connected parts. When processing, special care is not required, but reliable protection from atmospheric phenomena is needed. To do this, treat the wood with various impregnations and paint with a compound intended for outdoor use.

    If the window opens outward, the casing should be placed 30 millimeters above its sashes. Keep in mind when making platbands that they should not prevent windows from opening at an angle of at least 90 degrees. The remaining parameters will depend on the size of the windows themselves.

    It is recommended to make platbands like this. It is necessary to plan dry boards that have a thickness of up to 30 millimeters and a width of 75-150 millimeters, from all sides. Window trim should be 25-50 millimeters wider than the box. On reverse side platband, you need to choose a groove or gap that has a depth of no more than 2 millimeters, which should not reach the edges by about 10-15 millimeters. In this case, the platbands will adhere to the walls and boxes more tightly.

    When working with an electric tool, you should not “help” him, that is, it is not recommended to make great efforts in the hope that things will go faster. Excessive pressure on the file provokes its overheating and creates a risk of breakage. If the wood is difficult to cut, the cause may be a dull edge. In this case, you need to replace the saw blade. To create even long cuts, it is better to use a wide blade. If you have to work with plastic or metal, you should stock up on machine oil or at least water so that there is something to lubricate the file.

    Joining trim parts

    In the process of manufacturing a window casing, the parts are connected using a single deaf or through spike. It is preferable to use a deaf spike, in this situation it is not necessary to close the junction of the parts with a decorative element. There is no need to buy a special machine for making spikes, you can do it manually with an electric drill, a chisel and a hacksaw.

    To get a socket for spikes, drill a few holes that have a depth that exceeds the length of the spike itself by a couple of millimeters, and then remove the partitions. Holes must be made with drills for wood, and partitions must be removed with a drill for metal. You can trim the edges with a sharp knife or chisel. According to the scheme of the casing on the window, the spike should fit tightly into the socket, but without much effort.

    The spikes are fixed with dowels, which are made of dry hardwood (birch or larch). It is not advisable to use glue to connect the details of the window casing for several reasons, one of them is a significant difference in air temperatures, exposure to chemicals and moisture contained in the atmosphere. No adhesive can withstand such a "load". In addition, the platband frame, which is rigidly fixed to the window unit, is not affected by lateral loads.

    Decorating window frames

    From the front side of the window trim, it is necessary to select molds of a certain size and shape. Having cut the appropriate workpiece, it is necessary to cut it into pieces. In order for the platband to completely cover the unevenness of the wall, slats must be nailed on both sides, the thickness of which is equal to the width of the gap.

    It is recommended to complete the manufacture of platbands for windows with your own hands by processing the cut out elements. It is customary to process the edges with a sandpaper for grinding. Platbands are painted or varnished. Individual elements must be attached to the base with glue or nails. To highlight certain patterns, you can contrast them with the rest of the color.

    Carved platbands are an element of decor in themselves, however, in addition to carving, you can decorate them with paintings. But remember, it should be combined with carved patterns, emphasize them. Wood burning is also used: beautiful burn marks look very impressive. This can be done by using a gas burner or a blowtorch.

    On the other hand, the decor on the platband should coincide with the general design of the facade of the house, in harmony with other elements of decoration. Window casings made of wood can be complemented by shutters that are decorated in a similar way.

    Installing trim on windows

    Platbands are put in place without glue, on nails. Use nails that have a length of 75 millimeters, drive in approximately 400-500 millimeters from each other, sinking hats into the wood. Window platbands are usually fixed close to front side window frame, or retreating from it 5-20 millimeters, depending on where the sashes open.

    At window openings, platbands should adjoin closely to the window sill. This will allow you to put bedside tables - thick pieces of boards that are smoothly planed, without sagging. The bedside table is necessary to protect the bottom of the trim from rapid wear.

    After installing the casing, the wood must be treated with a special compound, which protects the material from sunlight and moisture. In addition, you need to cover them with paint or varnish for outdoor use. Periodically update such a coating, then the platbands will serve for a long time, and the facade will look original!

    Wooden architraves are rarely seen on multi-storey buildings, but in private construction this is the most common element. A modern private house can be made original and stylish by installing home-made carved frames on the windows. In the old days, unique patterned architraves were installed on each house, which were not only decorations, but also served as amulets. Today in Russia there is a trend towards the revival of traditions, and many owners prefer to put a beautiful wooden cashing instead of "boring" metal-plastic frames. In this article we will tell you in detail how to make a carved platband with your own hands.

    Modern platbands are made not only from wood, but also from metal, plywood, PVC and laminated MDF. Plywood and MDF products are not intended for outdoor use, as they are not able to withstand temperature extremes, humidity and exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

    Healthy: correct name external elements of the window trim - cashing, and the platband is called the inner frame.

    What are the functions of cashing out:

    • decorative - window openings acquire a complete and aesthetic appearance. A properly selected form of the platband is able to visually stretch a low building or expand a narrow one;
    • with the help of a well-chosen pattern or ornament on the casing, one can express individual preferences, traditional features of a family or region;
    • architraves help to unite all the buildings on the territory into a single architectural style;
    • cashing performs a protective function, preventing moisture, litter and dust from getting into the gap between the wall and the window;
    • due to the additional wooden frame of the window, heat losses are reduced at the junction points of the window frames to the walls;
    • increased sound insulation;
    • often wooden platbands are the only acceptable way to decorate a window, especially when it comes to a wooden house or a log house.

    There are no drawbacks to platbands as such, but there are a number of features that you need to know in order to install them correctly and extend their service life. So, wooden carved platbands will sooner or later deteriorate from the effects of the external environment - after all, the tree does not last forever and eventually collapses from moisture, frost and sunlight. But at the same time, treatment with anti-corrosion compounds will extend the "life" of beautiful home-made designs.

    It is very important to choose the right type of wood for the manufacture of platbands, as well as to process all areas with high quality. It is necessary to regularly monitor their condition, replace damaged parts in a timely manner, tint the surface, etc.

    If you plan to install wooden cashing on plastic windows, you need to choose the pattern and color very carefully, otherwise this design will look ridiculous. But often wood and plastic are simply incompatible. It is better to install wooden double-glazed windows, wood-like lamination or paint the casing itself white.

    Types of platbands

    To make carved platbands for windows, you need to decide on the installation method and the type of design itself. So, there are telescopic and overhead platbands. Telescopic ones are often installed not on windows, but on doorways. They make special l-shaped protrusions that slide into the grooves of the box. This is a rather complicated connection, but the result is a very beautiful and harmonious framing of the passage.

    Overhead architraves are attached to window frames with weather-resistant wood glue or nailed. Very often, cashing is supplemented with carved shutters, which make the facade of the house even more picturesque and authentic.

    Choice of wood

    Since cashing is placed outside the house, it must be made of the strongest and most durable wood in order to withstand environmental influences. For the manufacture of carved platbands, the material must also be pliable so that intricate patterns can be easily cut out.

    What to make a platband from:

    1. Hardwoods with hardwoods - ash, beech and oak. They are very strong and durable, however, it will not be possible to make “lace” platbands from such a tree, since they are very difficult to process. When choosing these breeds, it is better to limit yourself to a simple ornament.
    2. Hardwoods with soft wood - aspen, linden, alder. In this case, the tree, on the contrary, is very malleable and allows you to carve out unimaginable motifs, however, if processed incorrectly, all your work will deteriorate very quickly. If the finished casing is poorly coated with moisture-resistant varnish, it will crack and rot very quickly.
    3. Birch and pine are the best option for making carved architraves. In addition to the fact that these rocks are inexpensive, they have sufficient hardness for outdoor use, allow you to realize fairly small patterns and make neat cuts.
    4. Apple and cherry are mainly used for cutting small inserts, which are then applied to the main pattern of the canvas.

    Template selection

    To choose a template for a carved window trim, you need to determine what you want to achieve or demonstrate with this pattern. If you just want to "spice up" the facade, you can choose a not too complicated pattern, especially if you need to cash out the windows in all the buildings on the site. So you save time and effort.

    If you want to emphasize belonging to an ancient family or any nationality with the help of carved architraves, to reflect the cultural heritage of your homeland, we recommend studying traditional motifs and symbols. At the same time, each region, moreover, each village or city may have its own distinctive features.

    If possible, decorate all windows with the same platbands. The carving may differ slightly, but the same motifs must be present. For example, on kitchen window there is a casing with a deer framed by flowers, a bear surrounded by the same flowers can flaunt on the window in the living room, etc.

    Below we will show several examples of carved trim patterns, but in order not to repeat someone else's work, you can copy only part of the pattern, supplementing it with your own patterns. So you can be sure that your windows have a unique frame.

    Useful: if you are new to woodcarving, practice first on a separate piece of wood of the same species from which the architraves will be made. Hone the skills of placing chisels in your hand, basic movements and cuts. Video tutorials and tutorials for beginner wood carvers will help you do it quickly and correctly.

    It is easiest to make patterns with round holes, because they are quite easy to drill even for a beginner. If you want the trim to last as long as possible, give preference to patterns with large elements, besides, they are easier to cut. Small parts will require much more time and skills, and will become unusable sooner, since moisture and fine rubbish will accumulate in them faster.

    Important: in the upper part of each casing, it is necessary to make a slope so that snow and water do not accumulate on the surface of the tree. Just a few degrees of slope, and moisture will quickly drain down, and the surface will dry out faster.

    Making a platband

    The laudable desire to do everything with your own hands requires not only knowledge and skills, but also special tools. In the case of woodworking, you will need a large set of chisels, a hacksaw, sandpaper of various grits, a milling cutter, a drill and a jigsaw. In addition, stock up on impregnation to protect the wood from insects, weather-resistant varnish or paint, stain if you are tinting the wood.

    To make the same pattern on the architraves for all windows, prepare a stencil. It's better to cut it thick paper, cardboard or plastic.

    Important: place the stencil pattern along the wood fibers so that the thread does not crack, and place the places where you need to make through holes with colored dots.

    There are two ways to carve:

    Step-by-step instructions for making a wooden carved platband:

    1. Take measurements from the window.
    2. Wood for platbands must be thoroughly dried. The height and width of the boards can be anything, depending on your preferences, but the thickness should be 3 cm for the slotted carving method, from 1 cm or more for the overhead.
    3. Treat the tree with sandpaper (first No. 3, then No. 1 and zero) - the surface should be perfectly even and smooth.
    4. Cut out the stencils.
    5. From the back of the casing, select a layer of wood up to 2 mm thick, leaving small edges along the edges. So the cashing will fit snugly against the window frame.
    6. Draw a pattern on the front wooden surface with a simple pencil. Paint over the places where there will be through cuts.
    7. Start cutting out the pattern. First, it is more convenient to finish with through holes, and then get to work with chisels. For through cuts, use drills of different sizes, a jigsaw and a milling machine. Make the entry point of the jigsaw with a drill - so the cut will be more accurate.
    8. Carefully rub all holes with sandpaper (from coarsest to finest).
    9. From non-through patterns, remove all dust with a brush or vacuum cleaner.
    10. Nail the elements of the overhead thread to the canvas with nails without caps. Apply weather-resistant glue to the back of the element for a more secure fit.
    11. Wipe the cut-out casing with a damp, clean rag to completely remove dust from the surface. The rag should be barely damp so that the wood fibers do not rise.
    12. Now you can tint the casing with a stain or immediately cover it with a weather-resistant varnish. For this, alkyd or yacht varnish is suitable - they will reliably protect the tree from fading and moisture.

    Platband installation

    The durability of cashing depends not only on the correct processing of carved elements, but also on its competent installation on windows. For this, two types of fastening are used: a deaf or a through spike. With the blind spike method, spikes are attached to the casing, and voids of the appropriate shape are drilled in the window profile. Weatherproof glue is applied to the spike and driven into the hole. This is a rather complex mount, but very durable and neat.

    To make a through fastening, install a spike in the most inconspicuous place of the casing and fasten it. This method is less reliable and durable, but it is much easier to implement.

    However, keep in mind that these fastening methods can only be used for wooden windows. To fix carved platbands on plastic or metal-plastic windows, special high-strength glue or liquid nails are used so as not to violate the integrity of the profile.

    At the very beginning of the article, we mentioned that earlier carved wooden architraves were used not only as protection and decoration of the house, but also as security amulets for residents. The application of certain symbols and ornaments protected the family and created a barrier to evil intentions and black witchcraft.

    In the old days, our ancestors believed that an evil force enters the house through doorways and windows, so they tried to protect these places by all possible methods. The most common and "reliable" way to protect houses was to apply magic patterns.

    Even today, in most of the templates for architraves posted on the Internet, these protective symbols can be found, but now they play a rather decorative role. If you want to make not only an aesthetic, but also a useful element on the windows, you can combine various security symbols with decorative elements. At the same time, it should be borne in mind that each country (region, village) has its own traditions. So, for example, it was customary for the Scandinavians to apply runes, and for the Slavs, a subject image (animals, plants, birds) is characteristic.

    The images on the architraves helped not only to protect houses from evil spirits but also to strengthen or develop certain qualities in a person. So, floral ornaments have always meant unity with nature and love before Mother Earth. The wings meant strength of mind, and the bird completely personified the unity of times. The snake symbolizes wisdom, and the cross said that the owners of the house strive to maintain harmony between the spiritual and material worlds.

    Carved platbands: photo

    Since ancient times, the main decoration of wooden architecture has been the decoration of the facade of the house with various patterns and whole drawings carved from wood. The central element of the decor of the exterior of the house has always been window casings made by hand by craftsmen and craftsmen.
    This is how home-made carved platbands look like. Anyone can try to revive the ancient practice of woodcarving and make platbands on windows with their own hands, if carpentry does not scare him. The joy of the creative process and the contemplation of the result of their labors will undoubtedly bring satisfaction to the creator.

    Advantages and purposes of window platbands

    Window trim is a structural element designed to close the gap between the opening and the window frame.

    Thanks to the platbands, it is provided:

    • originality and originality of the facade;
    • aesthetics and completeness of the exterior;
    • the noise level is reduced;
    • protection against penetration of precipitation, cold and wind;
    • the safety of the insulation between the frame and the opening.

    Ancient technology for making platbands

    In the old days, it was believed that carved architraves protect the house and its owners from the evil eye and evil spirits.

    Exterior and decoration of the house with carved platbands

    Each pattern and ornament was created not only as an ornament, but also as a talisman. In the upper part of the window, the symbols of the sun or the cross were most often located. Plant motifs show the desire for unity with nature. Carved curls and waves are signs of water, giving life and fertility. Snakes, birds and other animals also had their symbolic meaning.

    Significance was given not only to carved signs, but also to the properties of wood. The type of wood, the place and conditions in which it grew were also taken into account by the craftsmen. For example, from the trees that grew at the crossroads, houses were never built and no objects were made. Ornaments and techniques for making carved architraves in each region and even in each village were their own and unique.

    The following types of woodcarving are distinguished:

    A variant of the pattern of a homemade platband for a window

    Wood species for carved architraves

    For carving, different types of wood are used. Their difference lies in the density, hardness, fiber structure, color, pattern.
    The most malleable and convenient for carving is hardwood - linden, aspen, alder. Do-it-yourself carved platbands for windows are easiest to make from linden. It is very easy to cut, but you need to be careful not to spoil the workpiece with an awkward movement.

    Carved aspen trim Linden wood is clean, light with a uniform, almost imperceptible texture. Softwoods also have disadvantages: their loose structure absorbs moisture very well, although this problem is solved by impregnating, varnishing or painting.

    Pine - the most common and affordable lumber, has good operational properties, clear beautiful wood pattern.

    Hardwood architraves (oak, larch, beech, boxwood, walnut) are very durable, but they are expensive, and require more effort and time during processing. The production of such platbands will be justified in the following cases:

    • the region is characterized by strong temperature fluctuations;
    • in very dry air;
    • for climates with high humidity.

    For small elements made using the applied carving technique, you can use fruit varieties of trees, such as cherry, apple, pear.

    Patterns for carved platbands - creating a template

    To make it symmetrical and the same on the entire windows, it is necessary. Creating a template for a decorative trim is not difficult; it is more difficult to decide on the variety of patterns and ornaments presented on specialized sites and stores.

    Pattern patterns for carved architraves For those who are engaged in carving for the first time, complex patterns should not be chosen. A large ornament without too small and elaborate details is what a beginner needs. Ready-made templates can be copied completely or come up with something new based on individual details and their combination.

    Templates can be made on your own in several ways:

    1. Processing with a graphic editor. You can create a finished image of the desired scale using Photoshop.
    2. Print or make a photocopy. The selected pattern is enlarged to the desired size and printed on the printer.
    3. Manual way. Manual transfer of the picture to the template using linear scaling.

    It is best done on cardboard or thick paper.
    For all elements of the ornament, a full-size template is made.

    You can transfer the pattern from the template to the wooden base as follows:

    1. Cut the stencil with scissors, and, attaching to wooden board, circle the outlines with a pencil.
    2. Outline the drawing with carbon paper.
    3. If there is no carbon paper, the imprint of the pattern on the tree can be transferred by strongly pressing the pen. A faint trace will remain, which is circled in pencil for clarity.
    4. Drawing on a wooden board should be placed across the fibers, this will protect the carved elements from cracking.
    5. Slotted areas on the workpiece can be painted over with a pencil.

    When it comes to window trims, the first thing that comes to mind is a wooden house in the village of my grandmother with carved window frames on the facades.

    Sweet memories. From time immemorial, Russian wooden architecture has been famous for the variety of decorative wood carvings on the facades of buildings, and later on window casings.

    Each region (province, county) had its own masters with their own style, which differed from the masters of the neighboring town.

    "platband" - "on the face", decoration and functional part of the window on the facade of the building.

    Today, lovers and connoisseurs of Russian architecture, enthusiasts who are not indifferent to the history of Russian architecture, traveling through the regions of Russia, photograph windows with various architraves (preserved or in a dilapidated state) so that descendants can see them. On the Internet you can find the sites of these people.

    What are window trims? First of all, it is still a structural element of the window, closing the gap between the opening and the window frame, preventing dust from entering the room, protecting from precipitation, noise, drafts.

    But in the old days it was still a protection from the evil eye, magic spells of the pagans were encrypted in bizarre patterns, amulets in the form of various figures, they were only applied to valances, piers, and later on window trims. Patterns were passed down from generation to generation, repeated in embroideries on towels, clothes, new designs were invented.

    Today, the platband has become more of a function of protecting the living space from external atmospheric influences and decorating facades. But the craftsmen still invest love and knowledge into the creation of the architraves, based on the experience of their ancestors.

    Looking at some window you like, framed by a casing, you involuntarily compare it with the face of a Russian woman of past centuries. Even the upper decoration of the window is named the same as the female headdress - “kokoshnik”. The peasant woman had a more modest dress, and the noblewoman had a more refined kokoshnik, richly decorated with stones and embroidery.

    The same thing happened with windows: various - simple and complex forms, with rich slotted carvings or very modest forms. The lower part of the window was decorated with a "towel", like a towel with bread and salt in women's hands.

    Platbands were made from tree species resistant to atmospheric influences and temperature extremes.. Larch is the least susceptible to rotting, but this breed is not suitable for the manufacture of carved openwork overlays, as it is quite fragile. But linden is an excellent material for openwork decor, soft, pliable, but requires special impregnation and processing, as it easily absorbs moisture.

    Oak wood is the most resistant to all atmospheric influences and temperature changes, but difficult to process. But having worked hard on this material, you will get a durable product that will be admired not only by your children, but also by your grandchildren.

    At present, platbands are being made from wood, composite materials - laminated MDF or plywood, PVC, polyurethane and metal (aluminum, steel).

    Wooden architraves the most environmentally friendly, elegant - a wonderful decoration of a log house, but less durable. However, with proper care, they will last a long time. Periodically, the platband must be treated with a fresh layer of waterproof varnish or paint.

    MDF trims this is a slab veneered with various types of wood, decorativeness lies in the color of a particular breed.

    Plastic architraves made of PVC, not subject to decay, more often installed on plastic windows. Have a wide color spectrum resistant to ultraviolet. The color of the platband can be matched to the color of the plaster or siding that the house is sheathed with, or set to contrast with the facades.

    Polyurethane architraves light and easy to use. Rounded windows can be framed with such a product, which is difficult to make from other materials.

    Metal platbands or flashings installed to protect the mounting seam on the inside or outside of the window or door, connecting it with a profile box into a single whole.

    According to the installation method, platbands are overhead and telescopic. Telescopic architraves have an L-shape, made of wood, veneered MDF, a modern look of architraves. Its advantages lie in the method of installation - the absence of traces of fasteners (nails, screws), it fits tightly into the grooves of the window frame.

    The platband installed on the window will become not only a functional element of decoration, but also a decorative component of your facade. Simple rectangular, carved or curvilinear arched window trims can be purchased from manufacturers or made with your own hands. But handmade products will become the hallmark of your home and increase your self-esteem.

    Do-it-yourself window trim manufacturing and installation

    You can make templates for platbands and the platbands themselves on their own. Owning any computer program for drawing, you can make and calculate any template, pick up the scale and print it on plain A4 paper. At the same time, it is not necessary to have any artistic skills, it is enough to find and upload a photo of a window with a pattern or a fragment of a picture you like into the program and circle it, changing or copying it with accuracy, and then scale the scheme to fit your window sizes.

    If you have several window sizes, then it is recommended to perform a scheme with an intermediate repeat, which can be repeated as many times as necessary. The diagram below shows how to do this.

    Rapport can be repeated from the same elements or two fragments arranged alternately.

    You can fasten with nails, screws or special synthetic glue. The horizontal and vertical parts are joined together more often at an angle of 45 °, having previously made cuts with a hacksaw using a miter box.

    There are several ways to make wooden platbands.

    The first way is a slotted platband - perhaps the most decorative and delicate. The platband made of light tones of wood or painted with white paint against a darker background of the facade looks very elegant and sophisticated, like Vologda lace. There is something mysterious and fabulous in such a casing.

    The next manufacturing method is laid on thread. Individual cut out elements are superimposed (nailed or glued) onto a solid board. It creates a sense of volumetric pattern. Thus, you can decorate a simple platband.

    The protruding part of the pattern is often painted in a contrasting color or shade. You can combine both types of thread in one product.

    Existing, but already dilapidated architraves can be repaired by removing old elements that cannot be restored, replacing them with new ones. Peel off the old paint and paint with a fresh coat of moisture resistant woodwork paint or varnish.

    Useful video

    All windows are always equipped with platbands. They are not only a beautiful addition to the window, but also perform a number of protective functions, both in the room and in the wash of the window frame.

    Architraves on windows in a wooden house is a universal attribute that protects the house from dust and improves insulating properties. Therefore, they are necessary for installation in any wooden house.

    Trim function

    Many perceive the platband as part of the decor for the window frame. And indeed it is. It gives a finished look to the window opening and hides leaks between the frame and the wall of the house. This is the protective function of the platbands.

    Platbands give a finished look to the window

    Casing functions:

    • Minimization of heat energy losses to the environment;
    • Reduction of drafts;
    • Dust proof and soundproof;
    • Moisture protection

    Window trims protect your home from dust and moisture.

    In ancient times, platbands served to decorate the home and were a kind of amulet. They were carved with patterns that symbolized protective creatures, and they were also decorated with bright colors.

    Carved platbands on the windows in a wooden house

    Architraves for windows in a wooden house are very important, because over time the tree undergoes deformation, dries out, and the gaps between the wall and the window may increase. It is the installation of platbands that will help reduce the activity of the deformation process, as well as minimize the consequences of existing gaps.

    Varieties of platbands

    For the design of window openings in wooden houses, several types of platbands are used. Basically, they are similar in design and differ in the materials used. All types of platbands are distinguished by the method of their installation and there are 2 main varieties:

    1. platbands of laid on type;

    Overhead platbands for windows in a wooden house

    2. telescopic architraves

    Telescopic casing for windows in a wooden house

    The first type of architraves has been used for a long time and is the most common. It is very simple to install such a platband. It is enough to fix it on top of the frame. The platband fixed in this way protects the room from the penetration of sunlight, dust and moisture.

    Installing the overhead trim

    Telescopic platbands are modern. This type of platband is placed in the space between the window frame and the wall. No additional fasteners, such as screws or bolts, are required to fasten the platbands. In connection with this method of its placement, the platband is securely fixed along the width and height of the window.

    Installation of a telescopic casing

    It is better to use telescopic platbands in wooden houses. They are very convenient and reliably protect the room and prevent the processes of deformation of window frames. The main problem of its installation is that for its installation it is necessary to remove the frame, and in wooden houses this is quite difficult to do. Therefore, many experts recommend installing overhead platbands that are easy to mount.

    Materials used for the manufacture of platbands

    Architraves on windows in a wooden house can be made of various materials. In most cases, wood is used. It is wooden platbands that are in perfect harmony with the walls made of that material.

    But it is possible to use the following materials:

    • tree;

    Wooden casing

    • plastic;

    Plastic casing

    Platbands made of wood

    Platbands made of natural wood are very practical and can be used in any interior. Such platbands can perfectly complement the style of the house with an interesting detail and emphasize its individuality. On platbands made of wood, you can apply a beautiful ornament or pattern.

    platband from natural wood on the window

    Designer's tip: To make the architraves and walls of the house look harmonious, it is better to use one type of wood. With the same texture, you can give the platbands a different color with special paints or compositions.

    Wooden architraves fell in love with designers because of the ability to diversify their shape or apply decorative reliefs. Platbands from other materials are difficult to process.

    Platbands made of wood can be given any shape

    Despite all the advantages of wooden platbands, there are still several disadvantages in their use. Wood is quite susceptible to temperature extremes and high humidity. At low temperatures, it can deform and change its structure.

    Plastic architraves

    You can find windows in wooden houses that have platbands made of plastic. This material is practical and convenient, both in operation and in manufacture. Platbands made of plastic can have any shape and color, their color can even imitate natural wood.

    Plastic platbands for windows in a contrasting color

    The obvious advantage of plastic architraves is its resistance to deformation caused by moisture, high or low temperatures. Also, its lifespan is much longer than that of a tree.

    Plastic platbands have a long service life

    As for its installation, it also does not cause any particular difficulties. Here you can do without additional fasteners. The platbands are attached to the built-in elements and there are no traces of nails or screws on the front side of the platbands.

    Installation of plastic platband on the window

    It is worth noting one significant drawback of plastic. These are its artificial components included in the composition. Rarely the owner of a wooden house agrees to install on the windows plastic architraves thereby reducing its environmental friendliness.

    Platbands from MDF

    MDF platbands are an intermediate option between platbands made of solid wood and plastic. MDF boards are made from remnants and waste wood. This guarantees the naturalness of the materials, and the special composition with which the plate is impregnated guarantees a long service life and resistance to moisture.

    Simple platbands for MDF windows

    Often platbands on windows in a wooden house are additionally laminated, which additionally protects them from the effects of negative factors. environment. The disadvantage is the low strength of the material compared to wooden and plastic trim.

    Platbands for windows in a wooden house made of MDF

    Each homeowner independently chooses what material to choose for the manufacture of platbands, because they all have both advantages and disadvantages.

    Preparing for the installation of platbands

    The installation of platbands on windows in a wooden house is preceded by a preparation stage. Firstly, all necessary measurements are taken from the already installed window. It is important to choose the right width of the platband. It should completely cover the contour of the window frame. Secondly, before installation, all necessary work is carried out with wood or other material that is used for platbands.

    Stages of installation of platbands on windows in a wooden house

    If wood is used as a material, then cut-to-size platbands are processed before installation or decor is applied to them. As a treatment, compounds are used that reduce deformation and protect against penetration of insects into the wood. Platbands made of MDF and plastic do not require pre-treatment before installation.

    Installation of plastic trim on windows in a wooden house

    Expert advice: it is important for architraves to use completely dried wood. If the wood is still damp, it may warp during the drying process.

    After the platbands are cut out and prepared on them, it is necessary to determine the places of fasteners and mark the places where they will join each other. If there are any holes, they must be prepared in advance. Platbands of any material must be well sanded before installation.

    After the platbands are prepared, it is necessary to prepare a place for their installation. The joint between the window and the wall must first be isolated, since after stopping the platbands this will no longer be possible.

    Installation of platbands from MDF on windows in a wooden house

    Before proceeding with the installation of platbands, it is necessary to determine the method of their fastening.

    For overhead platbands, there are several types of fasteners:

    • with nails;
    • deaf thorn;
    • through spike.

    Fastening with nails is the simplest, but at the same time, traces remain on the platbands that are difficult to hide. Also, this method of installation can spoil the material or create an additional load on it during installation.

    Fastening platbands with nails

    Mounting on deaf spikes implies the presence of small protruding parts on the window frame itself and holes for them on the platbands.

    Installation of platbands on deaf spikes

    A through spike is the same type of fastening, only the hole on the casing is made for its entire thickness.

    Connection of parts of platbands with through spikes

    The installation process of platbands

    After all the preparatory work is completed, it's time to start installing the platbands. All parts of the platbands are interconnected and fastened with nails, spikes or glue. Often glue is used as additional material for connecting parts of the casing.

    Installation of platbands on windows with liquid nails

    If the platbands are mounted on hidden or through spikes, then the installation work is carried out as follows:

    1. on the window frame and the casing, the places where the spikes and holes for them will be located are marked;

    2. spikes are installed on the window frame. Spikes can be made by yourself or purchased from a store;

    3. holes are drilled on the casing, in the places marked earlier;

    4. final stage- platbands are fixed with spikes.

    Installation of platbands on windows in a wooden house with self-tapping screws

    At the first stage, it is important to evenly distribute the hole for the fasteners, as well as the spikes themselves. This is necessary so that the load is evenly distributed around the entire perimeter of the platbands. After that, holes for the spikes are drilled, and they themselves are installed on the window frame.

    The actual process of mounting the casing is to align the holes for the spikes with the spikes themselves. It is important that all the spikes line up with the drilled holes. In order to securely fix the spikes in the holes, you can use special glue. It will give the reliability of the structure and fix the platbands well.

    Installed platbands on windows in a wooden house

    Often, ordinary screws are used to fasten platbands. This, of course, will simplify the process of their installation, but at the same time spoil the appearance of the product. When mounting in this way, all holes should be treated with a special compound that will prevent deformation when moisture enters.

    There are no special problems with the installation of platbands made of any material. For this, basic skills in working with tools are enough.

    After installing the platbands in a wooden house, it remains only to periodically take care of them and monitor their condition. In order for them to serve for a long time, experts advise taking the stage of preparing the platbands before installation with great responsibility and using high-quality products as impregnations.

    Platbands on windows in a wooden house

    Thanks to high-quality preparation and installation, window trims in a wooden house will last for more than one year and protect the house from moisture, dust, heat loss, cold and drafts, and will also decorate the house and give it a unique look.

    Photo gallery - platbands on windows in a wooden house

    In most cases, carved platbands are used to decorate the windows of wooden houses. But in view of the fact that it is rather problematic today to buy a ready-made platband, it is easier to do it yourself.

    Important! All platbands, albeit the highest quality, have one significant drawback - they need protection from precipitation. Making platbands on windows traditionally begins with the preparation of everything you need.

    Stage 1. Equipment

    In the process, you will need the following tools:

    Stage 2. Material selection

    For ordinary architraves, it is better to use pine, while for carvings it is recommended to take soft rocks, for example, linden (the latter, moreover, is much easier to process by hand).

    Important! The only disadvantage of linden - hygroscopicity - is easily eliminated by applying several layers of paintwork.

    Hardwoods should be chosen in three cases:

    • with high humidity of the climate;
    • with too dry air;
    • in the presence of significant temperature fluctuations.

    TO hard rock include birch and oak. They are quite difficult to handle. hand tools, so a milling machine is required, but such a tree will last several times longer than a linden.

    Stage 3. Important points in the manufacture

    Finished wooden platbands should not prevent the opening of the wings by at least 90ᵒ. As for other parameters, they are selected individually in accordance with the size of the opening. For fasteners, you can use spikes or connect the elements in half a tree.

    Important! In the future, for applying large images to the surface, the upper part of the casing can be extended. Spikes are used for fastening, and the decoration itself is popularly called "kokoshnik".

    The lower part of the product is made in the same carved way and must include a bevel necessary for the drain. It is characteristic that the thickness of the lower part should exceed the thickness of the upper one by at least 1 cm.

    On both sides of the opening, small slats are nailed - they will hide the differences in the walls (if any). The thickness of the rails should match the width of the gap, at least approximately. Final fasteners are carried out only after careful fitting of the joints.

    Important! If the sashes open to the street, then the platbands must be installed 3 cm above the window itself.

    Stage 4. Pattern selection

    Since ancient times, platbands have been decorated with the most bizarre patterns, which, it was believed, protect the house from evil spirits and the evil eye. Today, carved architraves are mainly made by skilled craftsmen.

    Important! To dodo-it-yourself window trims, you first need to choose a good stencil that will allow you to create a pattern of any complexity even without special woodcarving skills.

    Often, professionals themselves use stencils; without them, only one-time individual orders are carried out.

    Stencils today are freely sold in a fairly wide range. They consist of the following components:

    • bottom bar;
    • top bar;
    • vertical rails.

    In addition, there may be additional decorative details - hangers, and so on.

    Stage 5. Making the frame

    First, a frame is formed from pre-cut elements. Fastening is carried out with the help of spikes, which are fixed in the hole with nails. To create spikes, an electric jigsaw is usually used, although a regular hacksaw with fine teeth will do. A small knife is used to remove sawdust.

    The width of the finished frame, as well as the platbands described above, should not interfere with the free opening of the wings by 90ᵒ. The frame itself should be at least 2 cm larger than the window frame.

    Stage 6. Making platbands

    Step 1. First, the drawing from the stencil is transferred to the tree by means of carbon paper.

    Step 2. Then a jigsaw with a thin blade is taken and small figured elements are cut out.

    Step 3. From the outside, the contours of the pattern are cut out so that the canvas runs along the edge of the workpiece.

    Step 4 In any case, you will have to turn the saw in the workpiece. To do this is quite simple, you just need to use one of the two existing methods:

    • upon reaching the turn, several mutually parallel cuts are made (the saw must be able to turn to any angle inside the hole);
    • you can go the other way - make a small loop that will allow you to go from the back.

    Important! Modern jigsaws allow you to make cuts at an angle of 45-90ᵒ, thanks to which you can not only make the smallest cuts, but also give the decorative element a richer and more voluminous shape.

    Step 5. If it is necessary to cut a closed figure in the center of the product, then a hole is drilled in the middle of the part to be removed. After that, the jigsaw blade will be easier to move in one direction or another.

    If the workpiece is thin enough, then when processing it, you can do without an electric drill. To do this, take a jigsaw and rests on the workpiece at a right angle. Next, the tool turns on and the hole is scratched as it were when the canvas is deepened into the tree.

    These are all key aspects of the manufacture of window platbands. Actually, the whole procedure comes down to repeated repetition of the actions described above, but their specific combination depends only on the skills and complexity of the pattern.

    It is worth noting that there are other manufacturing methods that differ from those described above. For clarity, we recommend watching a thematic video.

    Basic Rules. What Not to Do

    Below is a list of rules that will help you avoid the most common problems.

    1. As a starting material, it is recommended to use a board 3-4 cm thick.
    2. Do not immediately grab on to complex patterns. At first, it is better to practice on ordinary round parts, which are easy to do with a drill.
    3. The width of the workpiece should be such that it is enough to cover the ends of the walls and protect against moisture.
    4. Carved elements should be placed along the fibers of the tree - this will prevent cracking.
    5. When choosing a stencil, it is better to pay attention to patterns with large elements, as small ones will look crumpled, as a result of which the finish will not have the desired decorative effect.

    Important! Before starting work, you should calculate the future costs of time and money, as well as the feasibility of the venture itself. In the absence of high skills in working with wood and interest in the process itself, it is easier to buy ready-made platbands.

    Moreover, it is advisable to first familiarize yourself with the photographs different products. So you can find a suitable option or draw inspiration for your own creation of something.

    Stage 7. Installing the product on the window

    Now it remains only to install the finished carved platbands on the windows, for which special glue is used. It is important that it is not organic, otherwise, due to susceptibility to biological influences, it will harm the products themselves.

    You can also use plumbing glue - there should be no problems with it.

    Important! If fastening will be carried out with the help of nails, then the spikes and joints should be coated with an adhesive solution in advance.

    Another option that can further simplify the installation procedure is to use self-tapping screws instead of nails. It will be easier, if only because there is no risk of damaging the casing or the surrounding surfaces with a hammer.

    Important! Self-tapping screws are very easy to disguise. Need to mix sawdust with glue and the resulting mixture, smear the hats. It is advisable to do this even before painting the windows, so that the hidden fasteners also acquire the desired color.

    The final painting procedure is also quite simple. Some kind of protective material is applied over the finish (not only paint, but also, for example, varnish, impregnation). It is advisable to do this in any case, since such a coating significantly extends the operational life of the products.

    The paint, as you know, peels off, so it is advisable to take it instead. It is much easier to periodically renew the impregnation than to repair cracked paint. And the latter, as you know, will definitely crack.

    As a conclusion

    It is commendable that people strive to follow the traditions of their ancestors, because this is especially true in the current conditions of active urbanization. For independent production of window platbands, it will take a little time and the appropriate equipment. The procedure is complicated, but the result will more than pay off all the costs. Moreover, this way you can save a considerable amount of money, since the manufacture of platbands for one window to order will cost an average of 2.5-15 thousand rubles.

    Video - Trim Options

    Architraves on windows, despite their simplicity, are of great importance in the decorative design of the facade of the house. They not only create a neat look and add an element of personality to the building, but also perform the more prosaic task of eliminating the gap between the wall and the window frame. In addition, platbands must withstand the influence of weather factors without losing their qualities.

    Window frame function and a bit of history

    The platband was first mentioned as an element of the house as early as the 15th century. Now the architraves have somewhat lost their relevance, but their function is still the same, regardless of the material of the building and its decoration. In connection with design features windows of high-rise buildings and in cases where glazing is used, their presence is inappropriate.

    Platbands appeared many years ago

    Simplified clypeus is wooden frame, having a width of 30-40 mm, which frames the window.

    The aesthetic function of this detail is important, but the main task is to bridge the gap formed by the window frame and the wall, which increases thermal insulation and prevents the penetration of dust and moisture from the outside atmosphere, as well as reduces the noise level. In some cases, in the presence of shutters, it performs the function of a frame.

    Types and types of platbands for windows

    Their form may be:

    • curly;
    • flat;
    • rounded;
    • convex.

    Flat platbands are characterized by ease of production and low cost. Convex platbands are made using special machines and, in connection with this, the price of products increases significantly. Carved platbands are of great aesthetic value and significant cost.

    According to the method of installation, platbands are classified:

    • telescopic. They have special protrusions that go into the corresponding cavities of the box;
    • overhead.

    An important factor in choosing the profile of this window element is the slope that is performed at the top of the casing. Its purpose is to remove sediment.

    Modern materials and requirements for the elements of houses have determined the trends in the requests of homeowners. The leaders in popularity are carved platbands made of plastic.

    Requirements for the material of platbands

    In addition to high aesthetic qualities, the casing must meet practical requirements. Its important qualities are the ability to withstand temperature fluctuations and high humidity. In addition, the material must withstand wind loads.

    It is important that the material has sufficient strength and is not subject to chipping and cracking. The use of MDF or plywood is out of the question. The properties of these materials are such that they are able to absorb moisture, are prone to cracking, and the paint on them peels off over time. All this is a sign of the fragility of products made from these materials.

    In this regard, MDF as a material for platbands can only be used inside the dwelling. The manufacturability of the material determines the simplicity and relatively low cost. In addition, it does not take much time to get ready-made platbands. Such platbands on the facade will require permanent care and additional processing.

    Our ancestors have been making platbands from wood for many centuries. Oak and beech are the most common types of wood used for this. Pine and birch have found less use for the production of architraves. Wood tends to absorb moisture, therefore, to increase the service life of the product and its appearance, it is necessary to use protective coatings. In addition, over time, the tree tends to darken, so the restoration of the original shade of the material is required.

    When using gypsum as a decorative facade element, the problem of interaction of the material with moisture is also encountered. When the water that has penetrated into the gypsum freezes and thaws in the process of temperature fluctuations, such architectural details are destroyed.

    Materials are subject to certain requirements.

    The use of glass fiber reinforced concrete and polymer concrete makes it possible to avoid the negative effects of temperature and moisture. Their use is limited by a significant mass of products. In some cases, when installing such platbands, the increased loads on the wall are taken into account and make it more powerful.

    Polyurethane compares favorably with other trim materials. This is due to the fact that its use does not allow the problems described above, and also its characteristics make it possible to create additional thermal insulation. In addition, its mass is comparable to the weight of wood, which facilitates the installation of these facade parts.

    How to make stencils for platbands on windows?

    Choice of wood

    Wood for the production of platbands can be used in various ways. It can be certain types of it, a combination of rocks by gluing or otherwise connecting.

    Simple and shaped stencils for window frames are best made from pine.

    The production of carved architraves requires that the material be soft. Linden has this quality. Material requirements are due to the manual processing of wood.

    The choice of wood must be made carefully

    Climatic conditions associated with high humidity or significant dryness, as well as significant temperature fluctuations during the day, determine the use of wood with a dense and solid structure. These include oak and birch. Their manual processing is difficult, so the use of milling machines is necessary. Such products have a long service life.

    Required Tools

    Before solving the problem of how to make carved platbands, it is necessary to decide on the tool used for these works. The main tools for this are knives and chisels, various in shape and size.

    Tools for the job

    For self-produced platbands, devices for manual milling, an electric jigsaw, a drill are used. A jigsaw is almost indispensable when performing such work, since with its help you can create almost any pattern. In some cases, a home-made device can be used, which includes a step-down transformer and nichrome wire.

    In addition, it may be necessary to make a tool for filing corners. To make such a device, it is necessary to fix two hacksaw blades with a fine tooth between three wooden rails. When working with this device, spikes are sawn with one blade, and the eyelets of the product are filed with the other.

    How to choose patterns for platband?

    Using the slotted carving technique suggests that aspen, alder, linden or softwood are best suited. The thickness of the board should be in the range from 5 to 50 mm. It is necessary that the chosen design of the pattern for the casing should be well distinguished at a distance, and act as a single whole of the architectural ensemble. Therefore, it is not desirable to create an image with a large number of small elements.

    Trim options

    For a long time at the top of the casing there is a kokoshnik with the image of the Sun. If desired, the top of the casing can be built up using spikes as a connection. Towels - this is the name given to the bottom of the casing. The design must necessarily include the presence of a water-cutting bevel. The bottom plank should be 10mm thicker than the plank at the top of the plank. It is important to observe the unity of the style of both parts.

    To avoid the occurrence of cracks in the thread, the parts should be placed along the grain of the wood. As a rule, the endings and openwork bends, which have a small thickness, have significant fragility.

    Structural diagrams

    The simplest cut can be obtained by drilling a round hole with a drill. That is why it is desirable to make a choice on a pattern with a predominance of round holes. In most cases, the ornament is made up of repeating elements, each of which is made up of holes and cutouts that have a more complex configuration.

    Drawings of platbands on windows contain the following elements:

    • bottom bar or profiled belt;
    • vertical slats or frame;
    • top bar.

    Part Names

    To get a stencil, you need to stretch the pattern along the length. For this purpose, a life-size image is applied to paper. Places suggesting the presence of slots should be highlighted in color. Then, the resulting pattern is glued to the workpiece. Using a drill, drill holes of the appropriate diameter. If it is necessary to work with a jigsaw, small holes are made where necessary.

    Production of platbands for windows

    platband

    The opening direction of the window must be taken into account. In the case when it opens outward, the casing should be installed at a distance of 30 mm from the window sashes. In addition, platbands should not become an obstacle to opening the window frame. Other parameters depend on the geometric dimensions of the windows.

    At the initial stage of the production of platbands, it is necessary to plan a dry board, the dimensions of which are within: thickness up to 30 mm and width 75-150 mm. In this case, the width of the platbands should exceed the corresponding size of the window frame by 25-50 mm. For a better fit of the platbands to the wall surface, a groove is selected or a gap of no more than 2 mm is made so that it is at a distance of 10-15 mm from the edge.

    When working with a power tool, you should not make excessive efforts, as if helping him. This may lead to its failure. If there are difficulties with cutting wood, you should pay attention to sharpening the blade. Long cuts are recommended to be made with a wide blade.

    How to mount carved platbands

    The fastening of the details of the platbands is carried out by means of deaf or through spikes. Moreover, it is believed that the use of the first of them is preferable, since there is no need to decorate the places where the connection takes place.

    The grooves for the spikes are made by drilling several holes, the depth of which is slightly greater than the spike. The removal of partitions between the holes is done with a drill designed for metal. The entry of the spike should be tight, however, without the use of force.

    The spikes are fixed with pins made of solid wood. The use of glue is not recommended. This is due to the fact that adhesives are not able to work for a long time under the influence of an aggressive atmosphere.

    Platband installation: features

    Installation of platbands is carried out without the use of glue using nails. They are driven in in increments of 400-500 mm so that the hat is recessed into the wood. Most often, platbands are attached tightly to the box. In some cases, an indent of 5-20 mm is made to the side, which depends on the direction of opening of the valves.
