The mortar for the construction of outdoor barbecues and brick ovens is prepared from clay, sand and cement - without adding cement, it will not be possible to obtain the desired strength in high humidity conditions. It is better to lay a firebox made of fireclay bricks on a mortar without cement, prepared from one part of clay and three portions of sand. The volume of sand depends on the fat content of the clay - the higher it is, the more additives are needed. Before preparing the solution, the clay is soaked for 1-2 days, and the sand is sifted through a fine sieve.

The sizes of garden hearths may vary, but, as a rule, the length of the firebox is no more than one meter. The width of the brazier should correspond to the length of the skewers - the tip of a standard skewer has a size from 47 to 62 cm. The ideal height of the barbecue is equal to the distance from the wrist of the main barbecue to the surface of the ground. All these nuances must be taken into account during the construction of a barbecue stove according to the finished scheme and changes must be made to the order for your growth.

To complete the masonry you will need a solution. The consistency should resemble thick sour cream. For the construction of the basement part, ordinary cement mortar is used. As for the masonry above the base, use a solution with refractory clay. He is not afraid of elevated temperatures.

To always have dry firewood at hand, you can provide a woodshed in the base of the barbecue. To do this, after 3 layers of ordering along the entire masonry U-shaped so that in front of the grill there is space for firewood. Shift subsequent rows to a distance of half a brick. Next, fill in crushed stone, approximately 300 mm deep, compact it, and fill the rest of the area with cement mortar with sand, grade M300; reinforcement mesh for the foundation, which should be located inside our cement layer, is suitable for reinforcement.

When the screed has set and is ready, this is about two weeks, you need to check everything with a building level to ensure it is even and you can start laying the first row. The first row must be laid very evenly; the entire further structure depends on this; it will be impossible to correct it later.


As can be seen from the figure, between the bricks there is a distance of 10 mm for the mortar joint. It is better to use solid single building bricks of the M200 brand. It is denser and cuts well. Since it will be necessary to cut it in half, for this we use a grinder with a cutting disc for stone.


To ensure that the gap between the bricks is the same, we insert spacers, these can be pieces of reinforcement or pieces profile pipe square size 10x10 mm.


Using a hammer and level, we accurately set the evenness of the surface.


For laying bricks, a regular cement masonry mixture is suitable, since the structure is located on the street and the temperature in the barbecue will be low. When the mortar begins to set, the spacer wedges should be removed.


After laying each row, we check the level vertically and horizontally, as well as the evenness of the corners.



When we reach the row where the firebox should be, we place temporary support using chipboard or plywood.

Between successive layers of bricks, CHANNELS are placed - guide grids. Such channels are located (temporarily) on the back wall and determine the width of the seam.

The size of the barbecue itself depends on the grate on which the meat will be placed for frying, so before starting construction you need to purchase a stainless steel frying grate.

  • Metal waste. The foundation must be reinforced. All kinds of pieces of metal that are unsuitable for other work are useful for this purpose. For example, these could be old wheels, cuttings of channels, angles or fittings, pieces sheet metal or wire. If there is no waste, you can take the 10th reinforcement and weld a frame from it.
  • Corner for jumpers(if necessary).
  • Brick. It is necessary to have a straight three-quarter refractory (heat-resistant) brick with dimensions of 187x124x65mm. Otherwise, the choice depends on the author’s imagination. “Bassoon” brick, facing brick and natural stone are perfectly combined. The finish of the stove must correspond to the appearance of the main structure of the site.
  • Wooden pegs and twine.
  • Slag under the foundation.
  • Ruberoid.
  • Metal pipe. It is best to use a pipe with a diameter of 15cm.

Step #2 - design the structure being built

  • Shape of the structure. The stove should not only be functional, but also pleasant to look at. If the structure is stationary, then it would be nice to provide a sink and a cutting table. Even if these functions seem superfluous even now, you will appreciate them later: you won’t have to shuttle between the yard and the kitchen.
  • Surrounding area. Branches must be removed immediately big trees, if they are located dangerously close to the pipe of the structure. The place for the stove must be calculated taking into account the area where you could move away from the burning fire.
  • Back wall. The back side of the structure looks like an ordinary wall. A tall stove protects the area for guests from prying eyes. Step #3 - install the foundation for the stove

Since a barbecue oven built of brick is a lightweight structure, a foundation made of grade 100 concrete reinforced with metal waste, 20 cm high, will be sufficient for it.

  • Using pegs and twine, we mark the foundation and dig a hole 30 cm deep along the perimeter of the foundation. The width margin is 5 cm.
  • We fill the bottom of the hole with slag and compact it well.
  • We install formwork around the perimeter and place reinforcing metal inside it.
  • We make concrete and pour it into the formwork.

The finished concrete should harden in about three days.

Step #4 - lay out the first tier

The foundation has dried and the main stage of construction can begin. We cover the entire surface of the screed with roofing felt. It should serve as a waterproofing agent. Before you start laying, you should decide on the shape of the openings that will be in the oven. If they are rectangular, you need corners that will act as jumpers. If you are planning an arched vault, you will have to make a template from boards.

We are building walls on cement mortar half a brick, not forgetting the openings. Wall height at arched doorway should be 80 cm, and with an arched one - 60 cm. The recommended height was obtained experimentally. If you add 2-3 rows of bricks to it, the tabletop will be 90-100 cm high. A table of this height is comfortable for most people to work with.

To make an opening arch, you must use a template that will support the structure and prevent it from becoming irregularly shaped.

If you need to make a rectangular opening, place a lintel from the corner on the last row of bricks. We continue further masonry of the wall along the entire perimeter. If an arched opening is used, then a support template is installed. It will immediately show you how to fold the barbecue oven. It is necessary to take into account that the arch vault must have a central brick, which determines the load-bearing capacity of the structure. The difference in the thickness of the cement layer between the bottom and top of the bricks helps determine the radius of the arch.

Don’t forget about washing: you need to install a pipe in the wall that will accommodate the water supply and drainage hoses. If you decide to do without a pipe, you can leave a half-brick opening in the wall for these hoses. We make the required hole in the lower part of the wall at the level of the sink. If there is no special hole for drainage, then the hose can go to a flowerbed or bed where moisture-loving plants grow.

It is better to use a stainless steel sink - this is the most reliable, hygienic and aesthetic option; do not forget to prepare holes in the oven wall for the inlet and outlet hoses

The “Bassoon” brick is narrower than the front brick. When the final row of the wall was laid out using the Bassoon, a step was created inside. It will be useful to us, therefore, if all the bricks used by the builder are the same in width, the internal step will have to be made artificially; for this, the brick of the top row must be pushed out a little. An internal step is needed when creating a screed under the tabletop.

Step #5 - screed under the countertop

The screed is the basis for the stove firebox and countertop. It must be done, regardless of what the further surface coating will be. We cut the boards to the size of the span between the internal steps and lay them, leaving an opening for washing.

Between the steps, which were formed by the last row of bricks of the first tier, we place boards for the screed, do not forget to leave space for the sink, and form the formwork around the perimeter of its location

To do this, leave the space in the opening where the sink will be installed unfilled with boards. On the contrary, we make the formwork of the opening from the boards for the future sink, securing it with screws or spacers. Now pour the concrete at once and leave it to dry for 3-4 days.

Marble slabs can be placed on the dried screed. This one is durable and beautiful material often chosen as natural stone for the countertop. General design looks very attractive and will last a long time.

Step #6 - lay out the second tier

The second tier, which will be made of brick, includes a firebox and walls. The walls are purely decorative and protect the recreation area from indiscreet glances. They are erected in half a brick, and this stage of work does not raise any questions.

It is much more difficult to work with a firebox. To lay the firebox of a DIY barbecue oven, two types of brick are used. Interior The fireboxes and its bottom are made of refractory bricks, and the outer part is made of ordinary bricks. This results in two rows of bricks. The design of the firebox has been tested by time, and it should be done like this:

  • The height of the opening at the firebox is 7 rows of bricks and an arch. If the firebox opening has a rectangular shape, then its height is 9 rows of bricks. The width of the element is 70cm, and its depth is about 60cm. We lay 2-3 rows of bricks above the opening, after which we begin to make a pipe.
  • The pipe is a narrower element, so all sides of the firebox must be gradually shortened. Each subsequent row for the front and back wall is reduced by a quarter of the length of the brick, and side walls- half of its width. Having laid out 6-7 rows like this, we formed a pipe that was narrow enough to lay it out straight for the next 12-14 rows.

After the masonry has settled for a couple of days, you can begin the final stage of work - ignorance of beauty.

Step #7 - finishing touches

There is little left: install the sink and mixer, connect all the necessary hoses to it, cover the countertop with marble, wood or other suitable material and set up a platform in front of the stove. For the site, screenings or ordinary paving slabs are most often used.
