Ottomans are versatile furniture in any home. Ottomans can be made independently for any interior, it is universal, you can put whatever you want in it and move it where it is convenient. In our article, we will talk about how easy it is to make an ottoman of any configuration from improvised material.

materials

  • Rectangular pieces of chipboard measuring 40 x 33 cm - 4 pcs.
  • Chipboard circle with a diameter of 30 cm - 1 pc.
  • Bars 4 x 8 x 8 cm - 4 pcs.
  • Furniture wheels - 4 pcs.
  • PVA glue and wood glue.
  • Metal corners - 4 pcs.
  • Foam rubber (circle, diameter - 30 cm) - 2 pcs.
  • Upholstery fabric.
  • Self-tapping screws.
  • Drill, screwdriver, sewing machine, stapler.

Ideally, the ottoman should be similar to the one in the picture.

Wooden pouffe assembly

The first step is to list the production order of the pouffe.

  1. We are preparing the material.
  2. We knock down the box.
  3. We mount the wheels
  4. We sew a wooden base.

The first stage (collection necessary materials) was taken into account earlier, so we collect the box.
Everything is very simple. You need to take four rectangular chipboards and connect them with self-tapping screws or corners. For a stronger fixation, we coat the seams with glue on wood.

The wheels must be mounted on separately screwed small bars. We fasten them with screws to the lower inner corners and coat them wood glue for a fortress. After gluing and fastening, we mount the wheels.

In fact, the ottoman is finished, but if you don't have sewing machine, then you can simplify your task: just sheathe the tree with a cloth and secure it with staples.
To do this, it is enough to take a single strip of fabric and firmly attach it around the entire perimeter with a construction stapler. Then pull it tight down and score with staples at the very bottom, and preferably on inside pouf. Cover the lid in the same way. But in this case, the ottoman will turn out to be square.

This model is the most common. It is a soft ottoman with an opening lid and bottom.

The principle of assembling the ottoman is the same as the previous model, but the only difference is the presence of a bottom and a square pillow on small furniture hinges.
To form the bottom you need a square board. It needs to cut corners for the wheels. We cut the corners, lay the bottom and fix it with screws and glue.
Let's move on to the pillow. Before attaching the pillow to the hinges, it must be made soft and sheathed. With a stapler and fabric. After stretching the drapery, we fasten a couple furniture hinges to the cushion ribs and the top of the wall box.

In addition to the presented possible models of pouffes, there is another type - with a removable cover. It is also not heavy in production, and it can be made by hand. To do this, you need square pieces of chipboard, bars, fabric and a stapler.
Initially, we will assemble the body and bottom with legs.

Fixing at the corners wooden bars. Thanks to them, the frame of the ottoman will hold tight.
On a square sheet with self-tapping screws we attach small even bars. This will be the bottom. Next, screw the bottom with legs to the corner bars. The box is ready. Let's move on to the lid.

For the top of the cover, you need to select strong material, because they will sit on it. We attach pieces to it along the docks and sheathe it. We put foam rubber or batting under the fabric, and pulling it tightly, we fix it with a stapler. wooden box upholstered with fabric and everything. The ottoman "in an hour" is ready!

The do-it-yourself photo ottomans proposed in the article can be placed in the bedroom, hallway or children's room. They will look original everywhere. Poufs are easy way acquire furniture with minimal financial possibilities. Making them is easy.

Sometimes you really want to update the interior, give it a new style, and additional pieces of furniture will become the most suitable assistants in this matter. And if it’s easier to buy a wardrobe or a sofa in a store, then making an ottoman with your own hands is very simple.

Ottomans came to us from the East many centuries ago, and immediately gained popularity. In the recent past, they occupied an important place in urban apartments with small footage, since they simultaneously served as a table, an armchair, and a footstool.

At homemade ottomans There are a lot of advantages compared to store-bought ones. You can choose the appropriate shape, size, color and type of material. In addition, in the manufacture of such an ottoman, you can use any means at hand, and such a piece of furniture will cost you almost free.

Soft ottomans: simple and easy from what is at hand

Taking up the manufacture of an ottoman, tune in to the fact that you can handle such a simple and easy job without any special worries, and we will help you practical advice and advice. You will need:

  • Sewing machine;
  • Textile;
  • stuffing material;
  • Paper to apply the pattern.

First, prepare a pattern using the diagram below. Lines B and C on it indicate the places where the paper is folded. It also shows how the template will look in expanded form.

    1. Take the unfolded template and attach it to the fabric. You will need to cut 8 identical pieces of fabric. Not to spend money on new material, use old clothes.
    2. On each workpiece, bend sharp corner inside by 5-6 cm and sew so that after assembling the pouffe there is an octagonal hole in the upper part, into which the stuffing will be placed.
    3. Stitch the blanks from the inside in pairs to each other (during cutting, do not forget to leave a seam allowance of 1 cm over the size of the pattern). Thus, you will get 4 parts from 2 blanks stitched together on one side.
    4. Sew 2 pieces in the same way: these will be the two halves of your pouffe. Sew them together and turn the cover inside out.
    5. Stuff the finished pouf cover with the selected material (it can even be scraps of fabric). Cut another piece to fit the remaining hole, finish the edges and sew by hand.

Tip: It is not necessary to use fabric of the same color for the ottoman. A multi-colored ottoman will enliven the interior, especially in a children's or teenage room.

Such an ottoman is very soft and light, small children will be happy to play with it, and you don't have to worry about their safety.

An even simpler scheme for making an ottoman

There is not always time and desire to mess around with patterns, so we offer you another, very simple option.

  1. Cut out 2 circles from the fabric. Their diameter should be equal to the diameter of the top and bottom of the product. Don't forget to leave seam allowances!
  2. Now cut out 2 rectangular pieces of the same size. Their width will be the height of the pouffe, and their length will be half the circumference of the upper and lower parts.
  3. Sew the rectangular parts together across the width on one side to make a long ribbon. Baste one of the circles to it and stitch along the seam. Do the same with the second circle. If the seam is not even or neat enough, you can sheathe it with a decorative border.

Thus, you can quickly and easily make a pouf cover that is easy to fill with any suitable material. It remains only to sew a zipper into the unstitched edges of a rectangular tape.

In the same way, you can make a cube-shaped pouffe. The only difference is that the pieces need to be square in shape, and for the sides you will need four pieces of fabric instead of two. Sew the details together, and in order to more clearly indicate the edges of the cube, use a canvas in a contrasting color. A denser fabric will give extra elasticity and help keep the shape.

Please note: a synthetic winterizer and foam rubber are perfect for stuffing such a pouffe. These materials do not deform and keep their shape perfectly.

Make a hole through which you will place the stuffing material from the bottom of the pouffe so that it is invisible. Optionally, you can stitch it tightly after the pouffe is stuffed, or sew in a zipper to be able to change the material if necessary.

We use improvised means: an ottoman made of plastic bottles

This option will allow you to significantly save on stuffing materials. The interior space of the ottoman is filled with plastic bottles. So, you will need to stock up on the following:

  • Plastic bottles of the same shape and volume;
  • Thick cardboard (use cardboard boxes, just make sure that they are not damaged);
  • or synthetic winterizer (you can also use insulation or several layers thick fabric);
  • Scotch;
  • Glue;
  • Scissors.

Cut out two identical circles of the diameter you need from cardboard - these will be the top and bottom of the ottoman. Set the bottles on the bottom circle so that they fill the entire space and tie them tightly with tape. Cover with the top circle and rewind with tape so that all the parts are evenly and firmly connected to each other.

The base is ready, now we start finishing the ottoman.

  1. From the insulation (foam rubber, synthetic winterizer), cut out two circles and a rectangle. Details should be slightly larger than the base elements, taking into account seam allowances. Connect them together and sew by hand with tight stitches.
  2. Sew a cover for your ottoman according to the same principle as in the second paragraph of this article.
  3. You can add to finished product additional functional element in the form of a strap. It will make it easier to carry and will surely appeal to children who will be happy to carry such an ottoman with them as a toy.
  4. If you plan to make an ottoman that you will use yourself, take a denser fabric for the cover and insert a border along the seams. For children's ottoman need soft material with variegated colors. It is advisable to use a denser layer of foam rubber.

This ottoman is not only easy to perform. By making it yourself, you will save yourself from the need to dispose of plastic bottles, and this is a great opportunity to participate in the fight for a clean environment!

A new look at old things: we make furniture from clothes

This is not a fairy tale or fantasy, an old sweater can really turn into an original ottoman, not only very comfortable, but also a noticeable element of the interior. Making such a piece of furniture is very simple, because the main condition is an original, bright, beautiful or funny pattern on a sweater that you will use in your work.

So, you will need:

  • A sweater that you will no longer wear, but it is a pity to throw it away;
  • Scissors;
  • Threads and a needle;
  • Felt;
  • Fabric for the cover (lining material is perfect);
  • Styrofoam for stuffing.

From the felt, cut the bottom of the ottoman into a round or square shape. This part will serve as the primary blank. Take the sweater and turn the sleeves inside out, sew the remaining holes with an even seam. Sew the felt blank to the bottom of the sweater to make a bag-case.

Tip: Using plain sweaters with large ribbed knits, such as rhombuses or braids, you will get an amazing classic-vintage ottoman that will look great in any interior. Such knitted patterns are suitable for square and rectangular shapes.

Now you need to prepare a cover made of lining dense fabric for expanded polystyrene. If your primary blank of felt is round, then you will need one piece of fabric of the required size (for example, 50 cm wide and 70 cm long), but if you decide to make a square ottoman, then calculate the required dimensions for four parts.

Sew all the pieces together, and leave a hem at the top for the lace, which will tighten the lace after you fill it with stuffing. The cover should be filled after you place it inside the sweater. Tighten the lace as tight as possible so that the filler does not wake up, straighten the sweater and enjoy your new piece of furniture!

Non-standard solutions in the manufacture of ottomans

Soft ottomans can be of any shape, even spherical. It will be easy great option for, which will become one of your child's favorite toys.

An ottoman ball is easy enough to make yourself, for this you will need:

  • Sewing machine;
  • Threads;
  • Needle;
  • Scissors;
  • High density fabric, two colors;
  • Graph paper for pattern making;
  • Polyethylene;
  • Silicone filler in the form of balls.

The process of creating an ottoman ball consists of the following steps:

    1. First of all, you need to make a pattern on graph paper, observing the required dimensions. To make it easier, use a round object, such as a large balloon or floor lamp shade. Measure its circumference, and divide the resulting size in half. Divide this number into 5 parts so that 3 middle and 2 extreme are the same size. You will get the diameter of the base in the form of a circle and the width of the stripes that make up the spherical cover of the ottoman.
    2. Transfer the resulting markup to the item you have chosen, starting with the circle part. Draw the next line down the pre-calculated bandwidth.
    3. Take it, cut it along one side and cut off the bottom. Straighten and lay on the marks of the first strip, secure the edges with tape. Transfer a quarter of the strip to polyethylene and cut it out. In the same way, prepare the part of the middle strip. Transfer the pieces to graph paper before cutting.
    4. Now the details of the ottoman need to be cut out of fabric in two colors, leaving 1 cm for a seam allowance. Sew them into strips, leaving one side open, and iron them out.
    5. Attach the first strip to the round piece. The ends of the strip must exactly converge with each other. Stitch them and connect the round base with the strip with a seam, stepping back 1 cm from the edge.
    6. Sew a similar blank for the opposite side of the cover and stitch to the middle strip. At the same time, do not overfill the ends of the middle strip. In the same way, grind the second semicircular blank with middle lane and iron the seams.

The cover for the ottoman-ball is ready, you just have to fill it with filler. To make the shape elastic, add small pieces inside. Close the hole with a hidden seam.

We complicate the task: a wooden ottoman with a box for all sorts of little things

If you have skills in working as a carpenter, then you can easily make a fairly simple, but very beautiful and functional ottoman with a wooden drawer on wheels. In such an ottoman you can put toys, magazines, shoes or clothes. For it you will need:

  • laminated board or chipboard sheet for the manufacture of a circle with a diameter of 30 cm and 4 rectangles 40 X 33 cm;
  • 4 wooden beams with dimensions 4 x 8 x 8 cm;
  • PVA glue;
  • furniture wheels - 4 pcs;
  • metal corners - 4 pcs;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • screwdriver (screwdriver, drill);
  • foam rubber for stuffing;
  • fabric for the design of the cover;
  • sewing machine.

Take the pre-cut chipboards and connect them to make a box 40 x 40 cm wide and 30 cm high. Additional glue the joints.

Place on the bottom corners of the box. Fix them with self-tapping screws, smearing with glue for a more reliable fastening. Attach furniture wheels to these bars. Install the cover with glue and screws.

The frame of the ottoman is ready, now you need to sew the cover. Take a special furniture fabric, it wears out less. According to the shape of the lid, open the top of the cape, and sew a strip of fabric 10 cm along the contour. Here you can also sew ruffles, drapery, canvas to your liking.

Lay a layer of foam rubber on the cover of the ottoman to ensure softness. Pull the cover over the top. For its implementation, you can use any fabrics and decorative elements.

Manufacturing process:

Dimensions stylish furniture choose at your discretion. In this example, the specialist used the following dimensions as a basis: height 50 cm, diameter 70 cm.

round seat

Draw a curved line on the plywood, step back seven centimeters and draw another one. Mark the points for future attachment of vertical supports.

cubic part

Cut out two squares from plywood that will serve as the bottom and roof. To do this, use electric jigsaw. Next, fix the racks at the four corners with screws and glue, and then install the side sheets.

Drill holes on each side. Treat all edges and surfaces with sandpaper, as you can get hurt with them in the future.

Sew on Pac-Man's eye. To do this, select the same material that you will use for the upholstery of the pouffe. In this project, the master picked up snow-white leatherette. Cut out a small circle and sew to the red fabric.

You can perform this action on sewing machine or manually. At the same time, make sure that the seam runs along the very edge of the eye.

Make upholstery for a square unusual chair because it is smaller.

Glue to the top soft foam. Apply wood glue to the surface and leave to soak for 15-20 minutes, then apply the material. Try to press the foam rubber harder at the edges and weaker in the center. As a result, it will take a convex shape.

How to make an ottoman
To make an ottoman with your own hands, decide on the design, size and materials. Before starting work, we recommend making scale drawings of the product. So in the process of work, you can always determine desired angles and dimensions of each piece. You can choose the dimensions of the ottoman at your discretion or take ours as a basis:
Height 40 cm
Diameter 80 cm.

Make a frame
Round ottoman
Draw a C-curve on the MDF sheet. To do this, you can use a cord, to one end of which tie a nail, and to the other a pencil.
Step back from the outer edge of the arc 7 cm and draw another curve. Mark the points where the vertical racks will be installed.

Square ottoman
Draw two squares (top and bottom)
Cut blanks with a jigsaw
Mark the points where the racks will be installed. Enough four racks in the corners. Install the racks by fixing them with screws and glue.
Fasten the sides
Drill multiple holes on each edge
Try to smooth out all the bumps and sharp edges sandpaper as they can be seen through the upholstery.

Sew on Pac-Man's eye. We made the eye out of the same material used for the side panels. Your task is to choose the right eye size and sew it to the upholstery. This can be done with a sewing machine powerful enough to cut through several layers of leatherette, or by hand. Try to make the seam go as close as possible to the outer border of the circle-eye.

Make upholstery for a square ottoman. We advise you to start with a smaller ottoman, because in case of failure, it will be cheaper to redraw it than a large round ottoman.
Glue the foam
Use a suitable adhesive for this purpose. Apply it to the base and let it dry for 15-20 minutes before sticking the foam
Glue the foam rubber, trying to press it harder closer to the edges and press it less in the center.
The foam should be slightly convex

Cover the top of the ottoman
Measure the size of the top face of the cube, add 10 cm on each side
Fix upholstery with a stapler
Start at one corner and work your way to the next
Check that there are no distortions and that the upholstery is sufficiently stretched

To prevent wrinkles from forming at the corners, they need to be bent as in the photo

The distance between the brackets should not exceed the width of the bracket itself.
Trim off excess leatherette.
Cover the sides of a soft ottoman
The sides are covered with one continuous piece of leatherette, which is wrapped around and sewn in one of the corners.
Lay out white leatherette along the top edge wrong side outside, lay cardboard strips that will ensure an even fold, fix them with staples
Fix thin foam rubber on the sidewalls
Turn the leatherette inside out and fix it on the bottom face of the cube. Fix the bottom three edges first Stretch the last corner so that there are no wrinkles in the upholstery and fix the corner with temporary staples or pins. Hem the corners and cut off the excess padding. Make a neat seam along the corner. To do this, use a special bent needle. Securely fix the lower edges with staples, cut off excess leatherette, leaving about 5 mm behind the staples.

Upholster a round ottoman using the same technology as a square one. Difficulties can arise only with inside corner(at the corner of Pac-Man's mouth). In this part, you will need to make several wedge-shaped cuts. Do this with the utmost care, making cuts too deep will ruin the entire upholstery.

What is an ottoman and why is it easy to do it yourself
