How to make a garden shredder with your own hands. What to do with dried branches at the dacha: a homemade grinder grinder Do-it-yourself branch chopper from a grinder

let's consider different kinds and designs of garden shredders for branches, wood chips, grass and grain, capable of processing any type of plant waste. For you, we have collected a selection of drawings and instructions for making a knife garden shredder with your own hands.

There is always a lot of trimmed branches, grass, tops and other plant waste in the garden. You can collect them and burn them, you can put them in a huge pile in the hope that someday you will get compost, or you can prepare raw materials for quick production organic fertilizer, adding wood chips to the soil to improve its structure can make excellent mulch or fuel for a boiler. To do this, you need a garden shredder, which you can buy or you can make yourself.

Advice! Protect your hands and eyes when operating the shredder, especially when shredding solid waste. Goggles and leather gloves will protect you from injury.

Types of garden shredders, main components and elements

Shredders consist of a cutting mechanism, a drive, a loading hopper and a frame with casing. In addition, they can be equipped with a hopper for crushed organic matter. Among the auxiliary means: a pusher and a sieve, which is used to obtain a certain fraction of wood chips. The residue on the sieve is sent for re-grinding.

Garden shredders are classified by the type of cutting system and type of drive.

Cutting systems

Commercially available chippers may have cutting systems:

  • windrow - branches and bushes;
  • hammer - thin branches;
  • milling - solid plant raw materials;
  • with a rotating turbine - thick branches;
  • knife - universal;
  • trimmers (line instead of knives) - grass, tops.

1 — hammer chopper; 2 — milling chopper; 3 — chopper with milling-turbine knives; 4 - blade disc chopper

There are other designs. For self-made suitable for knife and typesetting circular saws. The most common are knife ones, and the knives can be fixed on a massive disk in twos, three or more pieces, or rotate towards each other in a two-roll design.

type of drive

Garden shredder drives can be electrically powered or use two- and four-stroke gasoline engines. In practice, when making a unit with your own hands, they use an engine from a walk-behind tractor, which sits idle for most of the year, or remove the engine from an unnecessary household appliances. The main thing is that the power is sufficient - not less than 1.1 kW. If there is nothing suitable, you can buy a new engine, but in this case the benefits of a homemade shredder are not so noticeable compared to a purchased product.

Some grinders that process exclusively soft raw materials, for example, succulent animal feed, may not have a drive and are powered by human muscular effort. Below are drawings of shredders that you can make yourself.

Homemade manual shredders. A - two-knife chopper: 1 - knives; 2 - counter-cutting plates. B - multi-blade greens chopper: 1 - knives; 2 - counter-cutting plates; 3 - base frame. B - root crop chopper: 1 - shell; 2 - bearing; 3 - drum; 4 — cross; 5 — handle; 6 — end wall of the housing; 7 — shield; 8 — pitched board of the tray; 9 — stand; 10 - side wall housing

In the first picture, the knives are made from old, one-sided saws; in the second, the knives and plates are made from saw blades. The knives have beveled teeth, like a saw, with a pitch of 5 mm. Both choppers have long handles for light weight. The working part of the third design is made in the form of a drum with notches, the sharp edges of which stick out.

Drawings of various designs of garden shredders

Let's look at several designs of shredders that you can assemble yourself.

Drawing of a hammer grinder

A hammer chopper can crush branches, straw, corn stalks, and grain.

1 — loading hopper (sheet δ1 mm); 2 — edging of the neck of the loading hopper (corner 25x25); 3 — damper/valve (sheet δ1 mm); 4 — M6 bolt for tie (8 pcs.); 5 — framing of the loading hole in the housing (equal-flange angle 25 mm); 6 — M8 pin (8 pcs.); 7 — outer drum of the housing (pipe Ø 270x6); 8 — stator with grooves (pipe Ø 258x6); 9 and 20 — hammers and spacers (sheet δ3 mm, hardened to hardness HRC 45-47, 72 pcs. and 70 pcs., respectively); 10 — latch Ø 3 (4 pcs.); 11 — M20 nut with a spring washer; 12 — hammer axis (circle Ø 22, 4 pcs.); 13, 14 — piping of pipes (equal-flange angle 25 mm); 15, 19 — gaskets (rubber, sheet δ3 mm); 16 — M8 nut for fastening the flange (8 pcs); 17 — hammer rotor; 18 — flange (sheet δ5 mm, 2 pcs.); 21 — clamp; 22 - drive shaft

Cutting tool - circular saw package

A package of 15-30 circular saws mounted on a shaft is one of the options for the cutting system of a shredder. Some craftsmen point out that saw teeth quickly become clogged with plant matter. Others claim that they achieved good performance of the tool empirically - by setting the teeth differently relative to neighboring saws. Since carbide teeth are thicker than the disk itself, thin separators made of metal (for example, washers) or plastic must be installed between the saws, and the entire package is clamped with nuts.

Pack of 15 saw blades on shaft

A walk-behind tractor can be used as a drive high power, pulleys and bearings - used parts from a VAZ car. The bell of the loading hopper is a truncated pyramid, the outlet hole is small so that a person’s hand does not pass through. It is better to make the frame for the chopper higher in order to remove the crushed raw materials less often.

Double roller shredder

This chopper chops branches into measured pieces from 2 to 8 cm long, convenient for heating a bathhouse or wood-burning heating boiler. Its design consists of two shafts with knives - 3-4 pieces per shaft, rigidly secured with bolts. Knives can be turned from KamAZ or MAZ springs. If you can find a bulldozer knife, that will also work. The shafts are fixed on massive sheets in parallel, at a distance sufficient for the knives to cut the branch without clinging to each other. Free rotation of the shafts is ensured by bearings, and their synchronization is achieved through a gear clutch moving by a belt (chain) from the engine. To drive this chopper, it is advisable to use a high-power engine, but at low speed.

If you want to create a mobile shredder, you need to provide mounts for wheels on the frame.

Making a garden shredder with your own hands

The most structurally simple and inexpensive shredder can be made from a disk with knives attached to it, an engine, a frame and a loading hopper. You can grind the disk and knives yourself, order them from a turner, or buy parts in a store. The cultivator engine is suitable as a drive, and it is easy to weld the frame and loading hopper yourself.

Depending on how many blades are used and how they are positioned, the fraction of the resulting mulch may vary. The drawing below shows the basic design of such a chopper: a disk with four knives is installed vertically. The design also works well if the disk is fixed at an angle to the horizontal, and there are only 1 or 2 knives.

Assembly drawing: 1 - knives 4 pcs.; 2 — disk cutter; 3 — bearings No. 307

Operating procedure:

  1. Buy, order or grind a disc with knives yourself. The sharpening angle of the knives is 35-45 degrees. The blade of the knives must have holes for bolts for fastening to the disk. It is important to position the knives correctly and secure them with bolts and stops.
  2. Weld the frame taking into account the fastenings for the drive and other elements.
  3. Place the disk on the drive shaft and secure it.
  4. Weld the supply hopper and, if necessary, the receiving hopper for the crushed mass.
  5. Assemble all elements on the frame.

If the frame is mounted on wheels, the structure becomes mobile.

Plant waste in the form of branches and grass are inevitable companions of a garden plot. Burning or patiently waiting for the waste to become compost is impractical. It is much more efficient to assemble a garden shredder with your own hands. The resulting raw materials are useful as fuel for a boiler or soil fertilizer. Once you become familiar with the operating principle and types of waste recycling mechanisms, it will be easier to choose a suitable design for your own production.

Design and principle of operation of a garden shredder

Garden shredders make gardening much easier. When describing the mechanism, in addition to the usual name, there are also synonyms - chipper or shredder. They have a fairly simple design. Main components of the mechanism:

  • working shaft equipped with knives;
  • motor;
  • receiving box;
  • metal frame with protective casing;
  • Some models provide a hopper for crushed organic matter;
  • a sieve that regulates the woodchip fraction;
  • pusher

In addition to the basic elements, there are many others small parts. For easy movement, the entire structure is based on a two-wheel base. The operating principle of a garden shredder is as follows:

  • The chain or belt serves as a transmission link to move the shaft due to the rotation of the motor.
  • At this point, branches or other waste are fed into the receiving box.
  • The knives of the working shaft crush the introduced plant material.

The resulting raw materials can be sent to compost. The operation of a garden shredder is similar to that of a meat grinder.

Comment! Recycling of waste, especially solid waste, is carried out with precautions. Leather gloves and glasses are mandatory personal protective equipment.

Types of shredders

Before creating a homemade garden shredder, you need to decide on the type of waste to be loaded. Its design and performance characteristics depend on this. The classification of garden shredders is carried out according to three parameters: the type of drive, its power, and the type of cutting structure.

Cutting mechanism

Shredders manufactured in production have the following cutting systems:

  • Knife (Fig. 4). They represent a universal option.
  • Milling (Fig. 2). Process solid plant organic matter.
  • Rotating turbines for recycling thick branches (Fig. 3).
  • Valkovymi. Designed for bushes and tree branches.
  • Hammer (Fig. 1). Capable of grinding thin branches.
  • The grass chopper is equipped with a fishing line instead of knives.

There are other shredder designs on the market. If you want to assemble an electric garden shredder with your own hands, choose models with a knife cutting system or one consisting of stacked circular saws.

type of drive

The garden branch chopper is equipped with a gasoline or electric motor; each option has advantages and disadvantages. A gasoline-powered chipper is easier to process large branches. It is characterized by mobility and independence from the distance of the power source. But some designs need to be connected to agricultural machinery in the form of a walk-behind tractor or a walk-behind tractor.

An electric garden branch shredder is lighter in weight, less bulky and easier to operate. Disadvantages: connection to energy resources and lower power. Depending on the planned size of the organic matter intended for processing, the following engines are selected:

  • For low-intensity work with branches up to 20 mm in diameter, a power of 1.5 kW is sufficient.
  • It is better to equip a small area where you need to process branches up to 40 mm thick with a 3-4 kW shredder.
  • For large farms, where there is often a need to dispose of branches up to 100-150 mm thick, it is better to make a shredder with a 6 kW motor.

Advice! With versatile gardening work It is preferable to make a shredder with a 4 kW motor. For gasoline models, an internal combustion engine is suitable, the power of which is 5-6 hp.

Another design feature of garden shredders is the type of drive. This function is performed by a belt, chain, or the knives are fixed directly to the motor shaft.

Materials and drawings for creating your own chipper

To make your own garden shredder, where circular saws are used as the cutting mechanism, you will need:

  • Electric motor with power up to 2 kW.
  • A cutter with large teeth, or 10-15 pcs. circular saws Ø 10-20 cm.
  • Axle with diameter suitable for circular saws.
  • The separation of discs in a garden shredder is carried out with washers 5-7 mm thick. Their internal hole is selected depending on the diameter of the axle, and the number corresponds to the set of disks.
  • The drive function is performed by a belt with pulleys.
  • A corner is prepared for the bed.
  • Steel sheets for the receiving box and the guide socket are 5 and 3 mm, respectively.
  • Two wheels for mobility of the garden shredder.
  • Drill, grinder, welding machine and a set of fasteners.

There are many designs of garden shredders; for example, a grass shredder differs from a device for recycling branches. We offer a choice of drawings of garden shredders:

How to make a wood chipper

Let's look at how to make a garden shredder with your own hands step by step:

  • A set of circular saws and washers is alternately mounted on the shaft. It is turned on a lathe or a part from the gearbox of an old car is used.
  • The gap between the discs is about 10 mm. With a smaller gap, the width of the working area will narrow; a larger gap will cause jamming of small branches.

    Attention! Circular saws are fixed in such a way that the teeth are not located on the same line. They are installed offset or chaotically. With this mounting, the load on the shaft and electric motor is reduced, increasing the life of the garden shredder.

  • An angle or channel serves as the basis for a strong frame.
  • A foundation is installed under the installation site of the electric motor. The support must allow for movement of the motor in order to adjust the drive tension.
  • Next, pedestals for the bearings are formed; here it is important to prevent distortions. The axis of the shaft and the electric motor must be in parallel planes.
  • The next stage in creating a garden shredder is the formation of a working hopper. The container must be strong enough to withstand the mechanical impact of flying parts of the branches. The support plate against which the wood rests during crushing deserves close attention.
  • If the hopper made is adjustable relative to the cutting parts, the size of the crushed chips may vary. For example, larger fragments are needed as fuel, while smaller ones are needed for compost.

To feed branches, you need to make a bell, the depth of which exceeds the length of your arms. It performs two functions:

  • allows you to direct wood into the garden shredder at an optimally convenient angle of 90 o;
  • Effectively protects hands from damage.

Wood waste should be directed to the shredding site with a special board; you should not do it yourself.

Advice! Branches fruit trees processed in a garden shredder separately from other wood waste. The resulting wood chips are ideal fuel for a smokehouse. Also, you should not mix wood intended as a material for smoking with stone fruit and pome tree varieties.

Herb grinder

If gardening does not involve the disposal of thick branches, and the main waste is soft vegetation, you should consider the option of creating a grass shredder. Instead of powerful saw teeth, a cutting system similar to a knife for chopping cabbage is equipped. The principle of operation of the mechanism is shown in the drawing below:

Rotation disk cutter at high speeds it allows you to cut pieces from grass or thin branches. The high performance of the shredder ensures a fast process of processing unnecessary vegetation. To work you will need:

  • A round container in the form of a bucket or pan can serve as a working hopper for a garden herb shredder. The absence of thick branches does not require special strength of the walls of the garden shredder.
  • Parts from an old ventilation system called a volute are perfect for building a garden shredder. The electric motor, shaft and fan housing are the main components that can be borrowed for your own design.
  • A metal disk is used as a cutting system, in which knives are fixed into special slots.

Falling into the slots, soft vegetation is crushed and exits into the side hole. For this design, it is important to arrange the feed bell so that the limbs cannot come into contact with the cutter.

A garden grass shredder does not need a powerful electric motor; a power of 1 kW is sufficient; even an angle grinder is suitable for these purposes. Details of the arrangement of a garden shredder for grass can be seen in the following video:

The branches left behind after tree trimming are quite an inconvenient waste. Piled up in a heap, they take up a lot of space, and you can’t put the branches into the oven right away; it takes a long time to chop them with an ax. Making a fire and simply burning it in the garden is a shame. Suitable option For a thrifty owner, make a branch chopper with your own hands to process them into wood chips. And there will be a use for it - even burn it in a cauldron, or use it for compost. We are interested in the designs of homemade crushers, since the prices of factory units are not comparable with the volumes of wood processing in an ordinary private sector.

Types of garden shredders

There are different names for chippers used for crushing wood waste. Wood chipper, branch chopper, shredder, wood chipper - far from full list titles. Despite such a variety of terms, the structure of various units is almost the same. Any crusher consists of the following elements:

  • steel frame into which all parts and mechanisms are attached;
  • main drive – electric motor or gasoline (diesel) engine with power take-off shaft;
  • cutting mechanism;
  • main drive (usually belt);
  • protective cover;
  • 2 bunkers - for feeding wooden sticks and unloading wood chips.
Choppers: from circular saws (left) and with a knife shaft (photo on the right)

In fact, homemade branch shredders are divided into varieties only by the design of the cutting mechanism, the remaining elements differ only in size. If you carefully review the crushing section drawings published on the Internet, you can identify the following popular solutions:

  1. In the middle of the shaft, 2-3 dozen circular saws equipped with hard alloy teeth are attached.
  2. A design that replicates the structure of a jointer on a circular saw. Made on the shaft longitudinal grooves(from 2 to 6 pieces depending on engine power), where chopping knives made of carbon steel are fixed. The branches are fed for chopping at an angle of 90° to the knives.
  3. A disc crusher for wood, where the knives are attached to the plane of a steel circle mounted on a shaft. Here the branches need to be fed at an angle of 30-45° to the surface of the disk, which is ensured by the design of the loading hopper.
  4. A chipper with two shafts that rotate synchronously. The cutting edges of the knives mounted on the shafts converge at one point when rotating. Due to this, not only crushing occurs, but also self-tightening of the branches after capture. Wood feeding is perpendicular to the rotating knives.

Crushers: disc (left) and twin-shaft (right)

Note. To increase torque and cutting force, garden shredders use a flywheel mounted on the free end of the shaft. An exception is the disc chipper for branches, where the flywheel is a heavy metal circle with attached knives.

Next we will look at how to make the first three types of garden shredders yourself. A twin-shaft wood chipper is a rather complex unit to manufacture, requiring investment and labor, which is not always justified. Do-it-yourself hammer and other original wood chippers are shown in the video:

To process thick twigs and branches into firewood, you can make a mechanized cleaver. Options and drawings of the machine are presented in our instructions.

Manufacturing Guide

The first thing you need to understand is that without plumbing and welding skills and the appropriate tools, you will not be able to make even a simple branch chopper from circular saws. In addition, for the manufacture of shafts and housings for bearings, you will have to go to a lathe, unless you manage to find a ready-made unit from an old machine. The whole process is divided into the following stages:

  1. Choosing a shredder design.
  2. Selection of motor for drive and calculation of main gear.
  3. Preparation of metal and parts that need to be turned on a lathe.
  4. Frame assembly.
  5. Installation of the drive, cutting mechanism and belt drive.
  6. Installation of the protective casing and hopper.

Note. We are talking about a belt drive as the easiest to manufacture and safest to use. In the event of an accident or overload, the belt will slip or jump off without any consequences. The same cannot be said about a rigid connection through a chain (gearbox).

Design of a disc crusher with removable knives

As for choosing the design of a homemade wood chipper, the recommendations are simple:

  • a unit of circular saws is the best option when you need to obtain small wood chips at minimal cost;
  • if you plan to chop branches of small diameter into a larger fraction, then a cutting mechanism such as a jointer is suitable;
  • when you need to chop branches up to 5 cm in size in large quantities, it is better to make a disk crusher.

For reference. Small shavings and wood chips are often used by gardeners to make compost and mulch. It can also be used to heat a country house.

Knife shaft and its operating principle (like a jointer on a circular saw)

When the type of wood chipping is selected, you can begin procuring parts, materials and equipment. But first of all you need to do...

Selection of engine and calculation of belt drive

Drive power is an indicator that determines how thick a branch you can process on a homemade crusher. Here are some tips for choosing an engine:

  1. An electric motor with a power of 2.5-3.5 kW, minimum 2 kW, is ideal for your purpose. The 1.5 kW motor can be used to assemble a shredder for grass and small branches.
  2. The power of a gasoline or diesel engine should be 5-6 liters. With. These are installed on household walk-behind tractors and mini-tractors.
  3. There is no point in buying an electric motor that is too powerful, unless you have one sitting idle in your shed. It will consume an amount of electricity that does not correspond to the work done.

Note. The number of revolutions of the electric motor does not play a big role, since we will obtain the required rotation speed of the knives due to the V-belt drive.

In order for your wood shredder to reliably chop branches, the blade shaft must be given a speed of no more than 1500 rpm by selecting the diameter of the drive and driven pulleys. The decisive factor here is not the speed of rotation of the knives, but the developed torque (force). The distance between the pulleys and the length of the belt also does not play a big role. Unless a belt that is too long reduces transmission efficiency and is less easy to tension.

Calculation example. There is a 2800 rpm electric motor that needs to be installed on the crusher. The optimal solution is to reduce the shaft speed by half, to 1400 rpm. Then the diameters of the pulleys will differ by 2 times. For example, the size of the driving pulley is 100 mm, then the diameter of the driven pulley (standing on the working shaft) will be 200 mm.

Advice. When ordering pulleys for a V-belt drive from a turner, it doesn’t hurt to think about the future. It is better to make pulleys with 3 or 4 grooves, so that the speed on the working shaft can be changed by rearranging the belt. Then the chopper can be adjusted to various conditions work, for example, for crushing stalks of corn, sunflower, grass.

Pulleys with several grooves are more convenient to use; you can change the rotation speed and force

Preparation of materials

The best way to save money on making wood chippers is to find suitable materials V household. The following types of rolled metal are suitable for assembling the frame:

  • single equal angle corner with a width of 50 to 63 mm;
  • 2 corners of 35 mm, welded in a “box”;
  • profile pipe measuring 40x40 mm;
  • channel No. 6.5-10;
  • round pipes with a diameter of 32-48 mm.

The electric motor is mounted on a steel sheet with a thickness of 10 mm and dimensions corresponding to the distance between mounting holes on its flange (with a margin of 30-50 mm on each side). To tension the belt, 2 types of devices are used:

  1. The holes in the plate for mounting the engine are made oblong so that it can be moved back and secured with bolts.
  2. The plate is installed at one end on a hinge, then the belt is tightened due to the weight of the electric motor. On the other hand, it is fixed with nuts on studs, as shown below in the photo of a homemade chopper.

Here the tension occurs under the weight of the electric motor

To make the simplest design shredder, buy 20-25 circular saws with carbide tips and the same number of spacer washers with a diameter of 20 mm. This will give you a working area of about 80mm wide, which can be made larger or smaller if desired by adding or removing saws.

Note. The thickness of the teeth of a circular saw is greater than the steel base, so it is impossible to fasten the tools close to each other. To compensate for the width of the teeth, washers are used, which are placed between the saws.

The shaft driven by the belt must be turned on a lathe from a steel rod. But before you make this part, find 2 bearings whose fit size will fit the shaft. You will also have to make bearing housings with mounting flanges. Sometimes you can buy them at finished form on the secondary market or in specialized stores.

Advice. As an option, you can use rear axle bearings with a mounting diameter of 25 mm from classic Zhiguli models, and use a ready-made stud with nuts as a shaft.

To install circular saws on the shaft, you need to cut a thread. As a flywheel, use a circle of steel with a thickness of 10 mm or more, or a large pulley from some kind of agricultural machinery. You will also need steel base plate for branches, acting as a counter knife. Cut it from a sheet at least 10 mm thick.

Knife shaft drawing with dimensions - front view

If you have chosen the design of a branch chopper with chopping knives, then you can take the drawing of a knife shaft for a jointer as a basis. Just change the diameters of the axles where you need to press the selected bearings. It is better to reduce the width of the working part to 100 mm, because you are not going to put whole logs into the crusher. Chip knives are usually made on milling machine from car springs.

Shaft drawing for 3 knives - end view with groove dimensions

To assemble the chipper disk type, in addition to the shaft with bearings and knives, you will need:

  • steel circle 15-20 mm thick with a diameter of 40-50 cm (depending on the power of the electric motor);
  • sheet metal not less than 5 mm on the casing, the front wall of which serves as a counter knife;
  • the same, 1-2 mm thick for welding the bunker;
  • M12-16 bolts with nuts for fastening.

The cutting device of a disk chopper with fastening knives is shown in the drawing:

The number of knives can be changed (put 2 or 4 pcs.)

Frame making

Regardless of what type of crusher you choose, you need to make a base for it - a frame, where the drive and chipping mechanism will subsequently be installed. Weld it from corners or pipes using the following recommendations:

  1. Select the height to suit your height so that it is convenient to place branches in the bunker.
  2. The structure must be stable. Therefore, make the frame width at least 500 mm, and the length is arbitrary.
  3. Give the frame rigidity by welding cross members between the uprights.
  4. To easily move the unit to the frame, it is advisable to attach a pair of wheels and weld a handle.

Methods for installing an electric motor - under the tabletop and on the side of the frame (photo on the right)

Consider where you are going to install the electric motor. For a shredder made with your own hands from circular saws, the recommendation is this: place the motor in the frame so that it does not protrude beyond its dimensions. The same applies to other types of crushers.

Chopper assembly

First, let's assemble a chip cutter from a package of circular saws, following the following order:

  1. Assemble the saw blades onto the shaft by placing washers between them and tightening them with nuts on both sides.
  2. Press the bearings onto the shaft and then into the outer housings. Bolt the latter to the frame, having previously made holes in it.
  3. Place the pulley and flywheel on the ends of the shaft and fasten them securely.
  4. Place a steel plate – counter knife – close to the saw teeth.
  5. Install the electric motor and final drive, and tighten the belt properly.

Advice. Before assembly, do not forget to lubricate the bearing cages by removing plastic caps. Place the saws so that the tooth profiles do not coincide.

It is better to fasten the counter knife not by welding, but by bolting through oval-shaped holes. The point is to adjust the gap between the edge of the plate and the working teeth, which allows you to change the size of the chips within small limits. The direction of rotation of the saws is “toward”, that is, the teeth should “run” onto the counter knife.

After installing the parts, make and install a protective casing from thin metal, and in front there is a receiving hopper. The dimensions of these elements are arbitrary, the main thing is ease of use and safety. Finally, connect the unit to the power supply. power cable through circuit breaker rated at 25 A.

Assembling the knife crusher is carried out in the same order, only first you need to install and secure the knives in the grooves of the shaft. There is one subtlety here: the more the cutting edges protrude beyond the surface of the shaft, the larger the chips will be at the exit. The hopper is welded in such a way that the branches are fed at an angle of 90° to the cutting mechanism. How to do this correctly is shown in the video:

Advice. The unit can be improved by making an additional tightening device. It is necessary to make a second shaft of smaller dimensions, weld metal strips along it and connect it to the main mechanism through a belt or chain transmission. The speed of the tightening shaft must be reduced, otherwise the branches will hit your hands during loading.

Homemade mechanized drive pushing branches towards the chopper blades

There are also no special tricks in making a disk shredder; just follow the drawings and securely fasten all the components. The only point: when making the outer casing, try to make the front wall along which the knives rotate thicker and the gap between them smaller. Otherwise, the flexible thin sticks will be pulled inward by the mechanism and screwed onto the shaft.

Assembly drawing of a direct drive crusher

The rear wall of the casing must be firmly attached to the frame at least at 4 points, for which additional brackets will need to be welded, as shown in the assembly drawing.

Conclusion

The most difficult operation in making a garden shredder is turning the shaft and milling the knives from the spring, which you cannot do with your own hands. You will have to pay for this service, unless the household has a couple of metalworking machines. The task will be simplified if you can find a drive assembly, for example, from an old circular saw.

Another option is to use the circular saw itself to crush the branches, installing a working cutting mechanism on its drive. Again, the shredder can also operate from a walk-behind tractor engine, you just need to make the right belt drive.

The cost of garden shredders that you can buy in stores is quite high, especially when it comes to popular models from certain brands.

Therefore, some people try to make such devices on their own.

In this article we will talk about various models of homemade garden branch shredders for the dacha and give step by step guide for the manufacture of such devices.

All homemade products are possible conditionally divided into 3 types:

  • wood chippers;
  • mulchers;
  • shredders.

Chip cutters designed for chopping branches and completely dried large green mass, that is, thick stems.

They are poorly suited for processing and grinding fresh or slightly dried green mass, that is:

  • leaves;
  • herbs;
  • tops

More often a wood chipper made in the form of a rotary chipper. We talked about how this device works, its operating principle, and how to make it yourself, and showed it on video in these articles:

A homemade device of this type effectively grinds branches certain thickness, turning them into small wood chips that can be used as:

  • and agrotechnical garden plot;
  • dye and flavoring at;
  • fuels with various products;
  • feeding for animals and birds;
  • and ovens.

Mulcher Designed for chopping fresh and dried green mass, but not suitable for processing dry tops and any branches. Its basis is the line cutting module, which we talked about.

Chopped green mass can be Use only as decorative or agricultural mulch, which is where the name of the device came from.

The shredder is designed for coarse chopping of branches, so the finished wood chips are used only for heating.

Industrial shredders provide the ability to produce chips of normal size, but in home-made devices, the most important quality is considered to be simplicity of design and ease of manufacture, which causes an increase in the size of chips.

Choice of engine type: electric or gasoline?

When choosing an engine for a homemade shredder you need take into account the availability of components.

If you have a good gasoline engine of suitable power in your garage (2–5 hp), then it can be installed on most homemade garden wood chippers.

Gas engine will make the grinding installation autonomous, so it can be used even where it is not possible to connect to an outlet.

If the device will only work near an outlet, then it is better give preference to an electric motor. Even if you have to buy it, the difference in operating costs quickly compensates yours expenses.

The cost per hour of operation of an electric garden shredder is 7–10 times less than a device with a two-stroke gasoline engine, or 10–12 times less than a device with a four-stroke gasoline engine.

This connected How with the difference in the cost of electricity and gasoline, and in the costs of servicing gasoline engines.

Another factor, which influences the choice of engine – ease of installation. Gasoline engines only work well when their shaft is horizontal.

Therefore, to connect to the vertical shaft of the chopper, and this is how the mulcher shaft is installed, you will need a gearbox that provides a rotation of 90 degrees. That is, you will have to spend money not only on the engine, but also on the gearbox. And the electric motor works well with any shaft position, so you can do without a gearbox.

Drawing up a drawing

In order to avoid having to redo a partially assembled garden apparatus, it is necessary to correctly draw up a drawing, taking into account the size and shape of all available parts.

Numerous forums where users will help with this discuss the most successful configurations and technical solutions.

In addition, they also share their experience of independently manufacturing garden waste and garbage shredders, posting not only drawings, but also photos and videos of their devices, and also leave feedback on their work.

When compiling schemes you you can determine the location of mounting holes and welds. This will allow you to make individual parts first with advance drilled holes, and then attach the corresponding units to them without adjustment.

Ready-made drawings can be found on the Internet, after which, based on them, you can make a new drawing with dimensions, in which you will the features of available parts and mechanisms are taken into account.

The main advantage of this method is that it eliminates the need to independently determine and calculate the overall configuration of the finished device and the location of the main elements.

Here are drawings of some devices that can be used as basic ones:

  1. Drawing 1 - This is a standard design for a stationary rotary chipper that works well as a garden chipper.
  2. Drawing 2 - This is the design of one of the shafts of a two-roll shredder. With some modifications it can also be used in single shaft shredders.
  3. Drawing 3 – Design of a two-roll shredder.
  4. Drawing 4 – Drawing of a grass chopper with an electric motor, however, instead of an electric motor, you can install an angle grinder or a drill.

Thematic forums

To make a properly working garden shredder of any type, it is necessary not only to understand the general principles of its operation and the requirements for it, but also get acquainted with the experience those who have already encountered such work.

There are many thematic forums on the Internet where users discuss their own homemade products and share their experience of using them, so you can learn a lot of important information there.

Self-production

In this section we present a step-by-step guide to independent production of shredder and mulcher, A detailed instructions You can find information about creating a wood chip cutter.

The method of making a mulcher depends on the available components.

It can be made from a grinder, installing a fishing line on it instead of a disk, or from a regular asynchronous motor with a shaft rotation speed of 1.5–3 thousand rpm.

In the first case, you need to place the angle grinder with fishing line in some pipe or container, which will limit the spread of chopped grass, and in the second - you can make a full-fledged chopper.

Mulcher

For making a homemade garden electric mulcher for processing thin branches and grass will be required:

  • asynchronous motor alternating current with a power of 1.5 kW or more with a mounting platform (sole) perpendicular to the shaft;
  • steel pipe with an internal diameter of 30–50 cm;
  • steel angle with a shelf size of 15–30 mm;
  • steel rod with a diameter of 8–15 mm.

You will also need a steel plate for attaching the electric motor, an adapter for attaching the drum to the shaft, and a drum for the fishing line.

If there is no drum for fishing line or the mulcher will be used to process hard tops, then Instead of a drum, you can install 1–3 steel strips, placing them under equal angles . It is advisable to sharpen the edges of the strips, this will improve performance and reduce the load on the engine.

The main thing is that the hole for attaching to the shaft is exactly in the middle, otherwise strong vibration will occur, which will lead to a hum and a sharp decrease in bearing life.

Here order of actions to be performed to make a mulcher:

  1. The pipe is cut on both sides at an angle of 90 degrees. The length of the cut section should be 40–60 cm. The plate for mounting the engine is cut to the size of the sole, holes are drilled in the required places (for the shaft and mounting bolts), and then the engine is mounted for testing.
  2. If everything is normal, then the engine is removed and 3 corners are welded to the bottom of the plate, located relative to each other at an angle of 120 degrees.
  3. On plate install the engine, fix with bolts and attach the drum to it. If there is no drum, then steel strips or metal knives from any trimmer are used instead. You may have to install an adapter that compensates for the difference in the diameter of the shaft or extension and the diameter of the knife hole.
  4. plate with welded corners installed on the top edge of the pipe, positioning it so that the motor shaft is as close as possible to the center of the pipe, then weld the corners to the pipe and cut off the excess.
  5. Bolted connections can be used instead of welding, this will complicate installation, but will greatly facilitate the maintenance of the device. To do this, each corner is cut close to the wall, then a “heel” is welded, that is, a small steel plate with a hole for a bolt, to the back of which a nut is welded. Then they drill holes in the pipe body and bolt the engine mount.
  6. You can also cut the body (pipe) into 2 parts at the level of the edge of the shaft, then Weld mounting plates with nuts to any of the parts, and drill holes in the corresponding places on the other part of the pipe.
  7. From steel rod make a mesh with a cell size of 3–5 cm. If the body is made non-separable and the motor mount is secured by welding, then the mesh is bolted so that it can be removed for cleaning and replacing the fishing line. In an installation with a dismountable housing or a removable engine mount, the mesh can be secured by welding. Sometimes, instead of a mesh, they make a solid bottom, in which they cut round hole, playing the role of a sieve.
  8. The legs from the corner are welded to the bottom of the body, deflecting them outward by 20–40 degrees. The length of the legs should be sufficient so that a bucket can be placed under the mulcher. It is advisable to weld a “heel” to the bottom of each leg - that is, a piece of steel plate measuring 5x5 cm. The length of each leg, as well as the angle of deflection, must be the same for the entire structure to be stable.
  9. Before each start, access to the drum is opened and the condition of the fishing line is checked., change it if necessary. If knives are installed instead of fishing line, check their condition and sharpness in order to replace or sharpen if necessary.

Shredder

Although the shredder's design is much simpler than many other wood shredders, it is quite difficult to make one yourself due to the very high overall cost of the parts, which must be custom-made using certain grades of steel.

Therefore, in everyday life more a popular simplified shredder model With homemade knives from automobile springs and steel corners.

For the manufacture of such a homemade electric garden shredder will be required:

  • sheet steel 20 mm thick;
  • sheet steel 2 mm thick;
  • steel gears of the same size and pitch with an outer diameter of 8 cm or more;
  • asynchronous electric motor with a power of 3 kW or more;
  • powerful gearbox with a gear ratio of 50–100 (the more gear ratio, the lower the shaft rotation speed, but the higher the torque);
  • steel corner with shelf size 50 mm;
  • spring from a passenger car;
  • a flat steel rod with a diameter of 40–50 mm (you can use one of the gearbox shafts or a shaft from some other equipment, if its diameter is suitable);
  • bearings.

Here procedure:

  1. Cut 2 pieces from the steel rod, one 35–40 cm long, the second 40–45 cm long.
  2. Cut 4 pieces of corner 25–30 cm long.
  3. Welded 2 corners for each rod, to make a square shaft.
  4. Made from thin sheet steel cut out 4 circles, the outer diameter of which is equal to the outer diameter of the bearings, and the inner diameter is equal to the outer diameter of the shaft.
  5. Circles put on shafts and welded to the corners.
  6. 8 pieces are cut from the spring, the length of which is 2 cm less than the length of the shaft, after which one of the long sides is sharpened at an angle of 30–40 degrees. The smaller the angle, the better the knife will cut wood, but the faster it will become dull.
  7. 3–4 mounting holes are drilled in each knife, then drill matching holes in the corners of the shafts (the diameter of these holes should be slightly smaller so that threads can be cut into them). In this case, each knife should protrude so much that the knives of both shafts touch each other when they meet. Threads are cut into the finished shaft holes.
  8. From thick steel sheet cut out body parts. Its size can be any, the main thing is that the width is equal to the distance between the bearings on the shaft, and the height is not less than the distance between the far knives of both shafts. A total of 8 parts are needed - 2 side walls, top and bottom walls, 4 amplifiers.
  9. In the side walls cut holes for bearings. This is a very important operation, so even a 1 mm error will lead to serious problems.
  10. The side parts are welded to the bottom, then the amplifiers are welded - 2 pieces on top on the front and back sides, 2 pieces on the bottom also on the front and back sides.
  11. Select the method of attaching the gear to the shaft– most often, welding or a keyed connection is used for this (this option is only suitable for processing thin branches; an attempt to chop thick branches can lead to the key breaking).
  12. Connect leading(longer) shaft with gearbox. To do this, you can use a chain or gear transmission, as well as an adapter coupling made of thick-walled steel pipe.
  13. Connect the electric motor to the gearbox.
  14. If the body turns out to be unstable, then from below weld 4 legs, set at an angle of 25–35 degrees and equipped with heels measuring 5x5 or 10x10 cm.

Grinders made from grinders and other tools

As a basis to create a garden shredder can be used:

  • grinder;
  • drill;
  • trimmer.

Bulgarian, thanks to the high engine power and high speeds, it can chop thin branches and grass, but to do this it must be rigidly attached to a vertical surface and an inlet hole must be made in this surface.

To chop grass, you can use a three-blade knife from a trimmer, and to process branches, the knife will need to be made from tool steel to order. You can make a knife from tough steel, and replaceable blades from the most durable steel.

Drill used in the same way as the mulcher motor, fixed in any way. Due to the low speed of rotation of the cartridge, it makes no sense to install a drum, so a shaft is made, to which the knives are welded or otherwise attached.

Trimmer also used in conjunction with the mulcher body, secured so that the drum with fishing line is parallel to the surface of the sieve.

Do-it-yourself garden electric branch chopper

Caring for your garden plot, you often have to trim dried branches on trees and shrubs. As a result, a lot of brushwood accumulates, which is used for various purposes. The most practical option in such a situation would be to send the branches to the compost so that they rot there.

However, this process takes a very long time, and the mountains of dry branches on the site greatly spoil the overall appearance. In this case, a garden shredder comes to the rescue.

With its help, the composting process is significantly accelerated, and mountains of branches shrink to a modest size. Currently, you can easily purchase such a unit, but many people make it with their own hands.

The video presented in the article will help you understand this.

  • 2 Types of garden shredders
  • 3 How to make a wood chipper with your own hands
  • 4 Benefits
  • Design and principle of operation

    In order to make a device with your own hands, you need to understand how it works and works. Otherwise, it will be impossible to correctly create a drawing and assemble the entire structure.

    The structure of the chopper is quite simple. It consists of the following elements:

    • motor;
    • working shaft with knives;
    • metal frame;
    • receiving box;
    • protective casing.

    To make it convenient to move, the design installed on a two-wheel base. It is clear that a garden shredder also consists of smaller parts. They will be considered at the drawing creation stage.

    The operating principle of such a device is also quite simple. Rotation is transmitted from the motor to the shaft directly, as well as using a chain or belt.

    At the same time, branches begin to be fed into the receiving box, where they are ground by the knives of the working shaft. As a result, the wood comes out shredded and can be sent to compost.

    The operating principle of a homemade branch chopper is somewhat reminiscent of a meat grinder.

    A simple and quite effective device can be used not only by gardeners and summer residents. There are also industrial shredders, which are used for processing thick tree branches. The design of such units is much more complex and advanced.

    Types of Garden Shredders

    Before making such a device, you should know exactly what exactly it will grind. Its appearance, performance characteristics and some design features. Thus, all garden shredders are divided into:

    • by type and power of the engine used;
    • based on the operating principle of the grinding unit.

    Engine

    Garden waste shredders can be equipped with either an electric or a gasoline engine. Each of them has its advantages and disadvantages. A gasoline shredder processes large branches much easier and does not require power.

    However, some models are quite powerful and need to be connected to agricultural machinery, for example, a walk-behind tractor or a walk-behind tractor. An electric shredder, on the contrary, is more compact, lighter and easier to use.

    But it is strictly tied to the connection point and is slightly weaker in power.

    Generally during engine selection For the shredder, consider the following:

    • Electric motors with a power of up to 1.5 kW can quite easily handle branches with a diameter of about 2 cm. They are most often installed on factory models that are used for a small area.
    • Motors with a power of 3 - 4 kW process branches with a diameter of up to 4 cm. They are usually used by owners of a small garden plot.
    • Motors with a power of more than 6 kW are installed in shredders used in large farms, with the help of which branches with a diameter of 10–15 cm are processed.

    As a result of the fact that homemade shredders are designed for a wide range of work, it is best to install Electrical engine, having a power of 4 kW.

    Knife design

    Garden shredders also differ in the design of their blades. It depends on them how well the waste will be shredded. For example, some devices output pieces of branches that have length from 2 to 10 cm.

    Others are capable of processing very large branches and producing small shavings.

    And if the chopping system contains only a disk with knives mounted directly to the motor shaft, then such a device is capable of processing only thin branches and producing small chips.

    How to make a wood chipper with your own hands

    A drawing is usually created at this stage, after which all required materials are purchased.

    Selection of materials

    When manufacturing a device, first of all, a motor is purchased. An electric motor is considered the best option for a homemade device that can quickly grind raw materials in small volumes.

    The electric motor does not make any noise during operation and does not emit exhaust gases. Thanks to these characteristics of the electric motor, the device can be used even in enclosed spaces.

    The only disadvantage of this design is the mandatory connection to the power supply system.

    Installation of cutting saws

    Such saws are mounted on a pin - this is an axis, the diameter of which is equal to the diameter of the landing disks. To assemble the cutting device, washers and nuts of the same size will also be needed.

    Thin plastic washers should be prepared in advance. Subsequently, they will be required in order to move the disks to the required distance from each other in order to avoid the protruding teeth from interlocking with each other.

    There should be washers one element less than disks.

    Frame making

    This element is used to fasten the walk-behind tractor rod and can be welded from profiled metal pipes. After welding, the disk is secured so that it moves freely relative to the circular saws. Thanks to this arrangement, it is possible to adjust the tension of the drive belt if necessary.

    Fastening the hopper and casing

    The casing that will be used for the structure is cut out of galvanized steel, but it is much preferable to make it from sheet metal. The material for the receiving hopper is usually ordinary Cink Steel.

    Advantages

    Homemade branch chopper, unlike industrial devices is more versatile. It can not only process branches, but also crush fruits and various household waste.

    Due to the fact that the engine is horizontal and located on the same level with the knives, it is practically impossible for it to break from wet stems. Working with such a device is greatly simplified due to the fact that it is no longer necessary to monitor whether the raw materials are wet and to sort the branches by size.

    Chopper garden branches has with his own hands high performance: circular saws capable of processing fairly thick branches at high speed. The cost of such a device will be two times cheaper, and the power will be several times greater. A homemade unit will be no worse than the most expensive factory-made garden tool.

    Thus, making a branch chopper with your own hands is quite simple. It is best to use an electric motor for this. There are quite a lot of options for such a design and it depends on the ingenuity and imagination of the craftsman. A homemade device will be no worse than its industrial counterpart. Thanks to the presented video, you can understand all the intricacies of the construction assembly process.

    DIY garden shredder: how to make it yourself and what materials and tools you will need (drawings, video)

    Every garden needs a garden shredder. This device allows you to use branches cut from trees with maximum benefit, turning them into small chips.

    This, in turn, allows them to be used as fertilizer (compost). Not everyone can afford to purchase a device of this type.

    But if necessary, you can assemble it yourself from all kinds of available materials.

    Assembling a garden shredder with your own hands is quite simple. All materials and items required for this can be found at home or at your nearest hardware store. Moreover, their cost is relatively low, much less than the price of a new shredder. To make your own garden shredder you will need the following:

    • a small amount of sheet metal (the loading hopper will be made from it);
    • engine (drives the working part);
    • pipes of various diameters (for making a frame);
    • shaft (the saw blade will be installed on it).

    To process metal and perform other work related to the assembly of the device in question, you will need the following tools:

    • shears for cutting sheet metal;
    • a set of open-end and socket wrenches;
    • pliers and wire cutters;
    • Bulgarian;
    • welding machine.

    Making a garden shredder with your own hands, drawings of which can be found on the Internet, is quite simple. It is very important to use only the most reliable tools, as well as durable materials. This is especially true for working parts, as well as parts that bear the main load during operation.

    Before you start making a garden shredder, you should carefully study its design. It consists of the following main parts:

    Name, Purpose - design features Housing, Performs a protective function. It also increases operational safety (the likelihood of user injury is zero if the operating rules are followed). Frame (stiffness angles), a welded structure that serves as the basis for all parts of the product in question. The working shaft. Torque is transmitted to it through a special belt or chain drive. Bearings are necessary for the normal operation of the grinding equipment and the rotation of the shaft. Transmission can be belt or chain - it all depends on the availability and design features.

    Motor, Electric or other type of motor is required to create torque transmitted to the shaft.

    Making your own garden shredder is quite easy. It is only necessary to carry out assembly in strict sequence, and also select the required components taking into account operating conditions. You should be especially responsible when choosing an engine. Both internal combustion engines and electric can be used.

    An internal combustion engine requires maintenance somewhat more often than an electric one.

    But motors of this type are generally more powerful, which gives the shredder the ability to cope with thicker branches and be more productive.

    At the same time, electric motors are much easier to operate and create less noise and vibration. But their use requires the presence of eclectic current, and not all gardens today are electrified.

    You can very easily find a video on the Internet showing how to make a garden shredder with your own hands (youtube and other similar resources will help with this). This operation must be performed in the following sequence:

    • with help welding machine the frame is made;
    • the grinding part is assembled;
    • The bunker is welded.

    Each stage has a large number of nuances and includes many different operations.

    First of all, you need to make a frame. It must be as strong as possible, since it is precisely this that will be affected by the vibration created by the engine. The frame also carries a constant static load, since the motor and all other components of the shredder are installed on it. The manufacturing process of the frame base itself consists of the following steps:

    • using a grinder, cut tubes in the amount of 12 pieces (4 pieces - 80 cm long, 8 pieces - 40 cm long);
    • using a welding machine, these components are connected into a symmetrical cube;
    • a sheet metal base for the motor is welded in the lower part;
    • in the upper part - for the grinding mechanism (also made of sheet metal).

    The overall dimensions and shape of the frame may vary depending on the needs of the user. Also, a lot depends on what type of motor will be used. The above dimensions are suitable for a medium-sized electric motor (power up to 2 kW).

    You can watch how to make a garden shredder with your own hands on YouTube at any time - this is necessary to complete the next stage of work. The grinding part is the most important component of the design. It is made as follows:

    • from previously cut tubes or corners, a structure in the form of an equilateral letter “G” is welded (in two copies, the angle of both must coincide);
    • the manufactured elements are welded onto the upper part of the frame with an upward angle;
    • two bearings are installed on the tops, inner part which the shaft is welded;
    • a saw part should be placed on the shaft itself, which will perform the grinding function (these can be circular saws separated by washers and nuts);
    • A pulley is installed at one end; rotation from the engine will be transmitted to it.

    It is advisable to first look on the Internet for a guide on how to make a garden shredder with your own hands. The next step is installing the engine.

    The easiest way is to use any electric motor, having previously equipped its shaft with a special pulley that is suitable in size. Using a drill, holes are drilled in the sheet located at the bottom of the frame.

    After which the engine is screwed using suitable bolts. After completing this operation, you need to put the belt on the pulleys.

    The last stage is the manufacture of the bunker - it is required to allow processed brushwood and other material to be stored in it. The easiest way is to make it from ordinary sheet metal, bending it as necessary. You can also use a regular old metal bucket as a bunker.

    It is only necessary to place special sides leading to it along the edges of the upper part of the frame. This will allow you to collect the recycled compost as carefully as possible.

    After all previous operations are completed, the housing can be made: sheets of metal cover all sides of the frame between the grinding part and the engine (except for the side on which the pulleys are located).

    You can watch a video on how to make a garden shredder with your own hands on many resources. This process is not complicated. It is important to have not only the necessary tools and materials, but also required quantity time and desire. All this will allow you to save a significant amount of money on the purchase of a shredder, the cost of which in the store is quite high.

    How to make a garden electric branch chopper with your own hands?

    One of the problems that many gardeners face is the need to dispose of old branches and tree trimmings. But if previously all waste, as a rule, was simply transported outside the dacha area, today it is possible to get rid of a large pile of branches without leaving the garden.

    You can achieve this by making your own garden branch shredder, not only saving on purchases, but also purchasing the equipment you need for your household. This device allows you to quickly and efficiently process useless wood into chips or into an even finer substance.

    Let's look at making a simple electric wood chipper; first, watch the video.

    Due to the fact that modern gardening equipment is not cheap, you should consider how to create such a mechanism yourself and what you will need for such work.

    Working principle of a garden shredder

    The design of the device for recycling branches is quite simple. The mechanism includes the following set of main parts:

    • a motor that operates both on electricity and on combustible fuel, for example, gasoline;
    • working shaft equipped with knives;
    • metal frame;
    • receiving box where processed material is loaded;
    • protective casing;
    • a wheel mechanism with which the device can be easily moved around the site.

    The operating principle of the chopper is as follows:

    • by means of rotation, the motor of the device is connected to the shaft either directly or through a belt;
    • in parallel, unnecessary branches are loaded into the receiving box, which are carefully chopped with knives;
    • subsequently, the small chips obtained as a result of processing can be used for your own purposes.

    If we compare a wood chipper with other devices used in everyday life, the principle of its operation is in some way reminiscent of the functioning of a conventional meat grinder.

    It is worth noting that such structures are used not only by summer residents. The devices are much bigger size They are also used in the industrial sector for processing large branches.

    Popular: How to change fishing line in a trimmer and which one is better to choose

    Of course, the design of such mechanisms is more advanced and complex, but the general operating procedure remains the same: the wood is crushed into small chips using rotation provided by a shaft with knives.

    Materials for making a homemade garden shredder

    In order to make a branch chopper with your own hands, you will need to stock up in advance on a certain set of parts necessary for assembly:

  • Sheet metal, which is necessary to create a receiving box. But many gardeners prefer to use other improvised means (an ordinary bucket, an iron tank or the body of an old household appliance, for example, a vacuum cleaner);
  • Engine. The power of the motor directly affects the size of the loaded branches and the degree of their processing. However, here it is necessary to take into account not only the force parameters, but also the energy source from which the device will operate. There are two main types of engines: gasoline and electric. Electric motor power 2.2 kW 2800 rpm.

    A mechanism running on combustible fuel certainly has more power, but for country gardening, a more correct solution would be to assemble an electric crusher;

  • The frame for the frame can be made from any strong pipes; the material does not play a special role here;
  • Knives are one of the main elements of an electric crusher, in our case these are old used cutters 180 x 60;
  • An axis designed for attaching knives. Here you need to be careful and select a base that matches the diameter of the knives, otherwise the cutting elements will either move freely along the axis or simply will not fit on it. In this version, the cutters are put on a pipe with a diameter of 60 mm and welded to it, and a shaft of a suitable diameter is inserted inside the pipe;
  • To make a homemade wood chipper, you need to take into account that for installation you will also need small fasteners - nuts and washers, which also correspond to the size of the axis of the future chopper;
  • A pulley equipped with sufficiently strong bearings and, if possible, a reliable belt for rotating the shaft.
  • Having the above list of materials available, you can proceed directly to assembly.

    Installation procedure

    To understand how to make a branch chopper with your own hands, you need to study the following algorithm of actions.

    First, you need to secure the knives to the axle using washers and nuts. You should not place the cutting elements close to each other, as in this case the crusher will not function normally.

    This is due to the fact that when placed close together, one knife will always cling to the other. It would be more correct to mount them on the axle with a small gap, for which you can use any plastic washers. It is not difficult to guess that their number should be one element less than the number of knives.

    After this, the axle is equipped with a pulley. As mentioned earlier, the ease of rotation will be facilitated by equipping the pulley with two bearings with a diameter of 20 mm.

    Next, you need to weld the frame on which the electric motor will be mounted in the future. The motor should be mounted so that during operation it can be easily moved within the entire structure. This will help change the degree of belt tension and allow you to control the process of chopping branches.

    Working with the crusher will become more convenient if you attach a block made of profile metal to the frame. During chopping, the branches can be firmly fixed by resting them against this block.

    The wood chipper is almost ready. All that remains is to attach a receiving box to the body of the device, designed to load into it the branches required for chopping, and install the structure on a wheel mechanism for ease of movement. At this point the device can be considered ready for use.

    Advantages of a homemade electric shredder

    There are many advantages to a self-made model. This device is capable of thoroughly grinding not only wood, but also, for example, fruits and berries, which is especially appreciated by those who like to make homemade jam, fruit puree or homemade wine.

    At the same time, you can crush all the fruits directly with the stone, without bothering yourself with the tedious work of removing them. In addition, the assembled device is suitable for other purposes. For example, a grass chopper works in a similar way, so a self-assembled unit is very functional.

    In addition, another advantage of a homemade electric shredder over a factory model is the ability to process relatively large branches with a diameter of about 10 cm, which a purchased unit simply cannot handle, since its body is not designed for this.

    Peculiarity homemade crusher There is also the fact that it is completely unnecessary to take into account the humidity of the chopped wood, while factory units require preliminary adjustment of the degree of dampness of the loaded material.

    This is due to the fact that in most devices the motor is located at the bottom of the entire structure, so when processing wet branches there is a risk of moisture getting into the motor, which will inevitably damage the shredder.

    In a self-assembled mechanism, you can place the motor anywhere, for example, at the level of the knives, thereby protecting yourself from potential damage.

    It should also be noted financial side operating a homemade shredder. Its assembly will be cheaper than purchasing a ready-made mechanism, and if any functional part of the crusher, made by yourself, fails, the part can always be replaced with an inexpensive analogue, rather than purchasing expensive elements.

    In addition, all materials for manufacturing are almost always at hand at any summer cottage, so you don’t have to look for suitable components and choose any specific materials.

    Thus, we can say with confidence that a hand-made wood chipper is a versatile and cost-effective device that can facilitate the process of recycling waste wood, as well as simplify the life of any gardener.

    Electric garden branch shredder – review of the Schroeder, Viking model, do-it-yourself drawings for making a shredder, video

    One of the most popular types of modern country and garden equipment is an electric garden branch shredder - a device that can reduce the amount of garbage. Almost every owner of a personal plot or cottage should buy it. However, before doing this, you must choose the right suitable tool or spend some time and make it yourself.

    Types of equipment

    The main task performed by a garden shredder for grass and branches is the disposal of organic residues that constantly accumulate on the site when performing the main work.

    The result of processing is a homogeneous mass that takes up minimal space and can be easily processed into fertilizer using a compost pit.

    This means that the tool also provides additional fertilizing for agricultural crops.

    Manufacturers produce two options for shredders:

    • with disk knife systems;
    • with milling systems.

    A disk tool looks like a disk with several knives. The speed at which biomass is crushed depends on the material. This shredder is best used for leaves, grass and thin branches. Dry and thick branches can also be processed using the disk system, although they dull the metal of the knives much faster.

    The milling blade system of a garden electric branch chopper is considered more reliable and productive. With its help, you can process large pieces of wood up to 45–100 mm in size.

    In addition, such devices are equipped with a special mechanism for retracting branches, thanks to which the user is not required to constantly push them.

    The system processes waste automatically, although it is best to grind grass using disc equipment.

    Selection by technical characteristics

    You should start choosing a garden shredder based on its technical parameters– first of all, in terms of productivity. Depending on its value, devices are divided into three categories:

  • Low-power, the performance of which does not exceed 1600 W. They are usually equipped with a knife system, weigh no more than 20 kg and cut branches with a diameter of up to 30 mm. Used for processing weeds, grass and young stems.
  • Medium power installations (1600–2500 W). The weight of the equipment is not less than 20 kg, and the diameter of the processed branches reaches 35 mm. Equipment of this type moves with the help of wheels, and its grinding system is usually milling.
  • High-performance devices, the power of which reaches (and sometimes even exceeds) 3800 W. They have increased dimensions and greater weight and operate on a three-phase electric motor. The equipment is equipped with a powerful cutting cutter and a straight, wide funnel. Such installations, which include the powerful Viking GB 460C garden shredder, chop branches with a diameter of 75 mm.
  • The most powerful devices work with even larger pieces of wood (up to 100–120 mm in diameter). They are used in large garden farms to remove almost any organic waste. The price of equipment in this category is the highest, and the dimensions are maximum. Some of these models are not even equipped with wheels, but are installed in one place.

    Selection of shredder by manufacturer

    On the market you can find devices that differ not only in size and power, but also in brands. The most popular manufacturers of garden electric branch shredders are the following devices:

    • German Bosch, Ikra Mogatec and Alko;
    • Austrian Viking;
    • Swedish Stiga;
    • Slovenian Sadko;
    • Chinese DTZ.

    How to make a garden shredder with your own hands + Video

    Preface

    Experienced gardeners have long come up with such a convenient thing as a garden shredder, which you can make with your own hands at a minimum cost. We are talking about a special device that allows you to chop branches and other similar organic waste from your garden without resorting to manual labor.

    This motto has already been adopted by the owners of quite a large number of private houses and gardens. You too can join the honorary list of innovative gardeners.

    To do this, you just need to relax after tiring hours self made on pruning trees and stock up on drawings that will allow you to create such a garden shredder with your own hands.

    According to experts, this will take you a minimum of cost and energy.

    Of course, you can go to a specialized supermarket and purchase expensive and large equipment that will chop the required number of branches in a couple of minutes.

    But you must admit that it will be much more pleasant to make a garden shredder with your own hands by finding the right article on the Internet, and then use it for many years for its intended purpose.

    After all, depending on the type of soil, you can plant an entire garden. fruit trees that you will need to look after.

    A homemade garden shredder is an effective unit!

    A garden shredder should not be underpowered or equipped with a small number of blades, otherwise you risk poor performance from your new equipment.

    It is better to assemble a device that will allow you to process branches with a diameter of 4 cm; the selected technical indicators of 2 cm will not be sufficient for such work.

    For such equipment it is necessary to select powerful engine(some experts recommend gasoline, which is more economical, others recommend electric). Most homemade craftsmen adopted the engine from the MB-1 walk-behind tractor.

    In addition, in order to make high-quality equipment, you will have to buy a whole set of circular saws with carbide tips - from six to ten (about 25 pieces). As a result, you will achieve the desired cutting edge width of 8 cm.

    Multi-profile unit - what to weld to what

    So, you're ready to get started.

    Now you need to weld a frame made of steel pipes to install your motor, connect the motor to the chopper using a belt (you can find it in a car store), separately cutting discs install on a steel shaft (diameter 20mm) and place thin plastic washers between them. Experts advise installing the engine on the frame so that it can move relative to the circular saws and adjust the tension of the drive belt. The chopper frame is mounted on the walk-behind tractor rod and secured with bolts.

    A persistent profile in the form of a bar will also make the work much easier. You can easily install it with your own hands on the frame of the electric garden shredder you are assembling.

    It will be much more pleasant to work with wood if you install a special compartment both above and below to receive the crushed product. In the lower part it will prevent possible scattering of crushed waste.

    Your device can now “absorb” not only wood, but also grass, tops and twigs, and, if necessary, vegetables, crushing them to the smallest pieces.

    That's basically all - your device is completely ready for use. It turns out that it is not at all difficult to make a garden branch chopper with your own hands. Just remember about safety precautions - no one has canceled them. As well as the fact that the used material should also at least be removed from the site and preferably disposed of.

    Making a garden branch shredder with your own hands

    All gardeners, without exception, are faced with the need to dispose of plant debris, branches they cut and grass clippings.

    It is not advisable to burn or throw away such waste, since it can be used to obtain natural and effective fertilizer.

    You just need to chop the branches into chips, and you can create such a chopper either yourself or purchase the tool in specialized garden stores. Let's tell you in more detail how to make a branch chopper with your own hands.

    Main design elements

    A garden shredder, or, as it is also called, a chipper and shredder, is a the simplest tool, which will significantly simplify work on a personal plot.

    With the help of such a device, you can easily get rid of grass and branches, and subsequently the raw materials are placed in compost pit and is processed into an effective natural organic fertilizer.

    Also, the resulting crushed branches can be used as fuel for heating a house, which somewhat reduces the costs of homeowner gardeners living outside the city.

    Modern garden shredders They are distinguished by their simplicity of design, so they are quite capable of being made independently. The main elements of such equipment are the following:

    • Grinding mechanism.
    • Drive unit.
    • Bunker.
    • Metal frame and protective casing.

    The operating principle of shredders is extremely simple and vaguely resembles an ordinary kitchen meat grinder. All garden debris and branches fall into a receiving funnel, where, using a sharp cutting tool are ground into small chips.

    Mechanism used

    Before choosing the type of grinding mechanism, drive and the entire design of such a garden tool, you must first decide on the type of waste to be processed. Subsequently, the performance characteristics and design features of such devices will depend on whether you are going to work with branches, leaves and dry grass.

    To date The most popular options for the grinding mechanisms used are:

    • Hammer type, designed for recycling thin branches.
    • With rotating turbines that are capable of cutting thick branches.
    • Universal knife.
    • Roller - for working with paper, wood, grinding bushes and thin branches.
    • Milling - for working with hard wood.
    • Trimmer designed for soft debris.

    If you choose a chopping mechanism for making such a garden tool yourself, we recommend that you give preference to a universal blade or roller design, which combines simplicity, affordable cost and reliability with efficiency.

    Power and type of engine used

    Shredders, depending on their design, can be equipped with gasoline or electric engines. It should be said that each type of drive has its own advantages and disadvantages.

    For example, a gasoline garden shredder is portable, it is productive and efficient equipment that can cope even with thick branches.

    At the same time, such garden branch cutters, built using gasoline engine, are characterized by a bulky design, which somewhat complicates its operation.

    A self-made garden electric herb shredder is a convenient and easy-to-use tool, but such units are completely dependent on the power supply and may have less power compared to gasoline drives.

    The choice of engine power you use will directly depend on what material you plan to work with in the garden.

    If you need to process leaves and shred thin branches, then a small drive will be enough, developing 1.5 kW.

    But if the device is used to work with thick wood, then the optimal engine power will be 3-4 kW.

    Making a Garden Wood Chipper

    Let us immediately make a reservation that the implementation of such garden mechanized tools will require appropriate technical knowledge and practical experience.

    All work can be divided into two main stages. At the first stage, a crusher layout is selected, all necessary tools and materials are purchased and prepared.

    At the second stage, the shredder is directly assembled and its operation is configured.

    Selecting a chopper design

    The drawings of the wood chopper used can be completed independently if you have the appropriate engineering knowledge, or you can use ready-made documentation that can be easily found on the Internet. Remember that the dimensions, type and type of drive of such a shredder should be selected depending on what type of garden waste will be processed using such a unit.

    We can recommend that you pay attention to modular designs for garden branch shredders, which involve the use of a set of circular saws, and the entire design is simple, so it can be done by an ordinary gardener.

    Tools and materials

    To complete this simple garden chipper you will need:

    • Two pulleys.
    • Electric or gasoline engine.
    • Set of circular saws.
    • Metal washers and other fastenings.
    • Two bearings with fastening.
    • Sheet metal to make the frame.
    • Profile pipes for the frame.
    • Grinder and welding inverter.

    Step-by-step manufacturing instructions

  • First of all, it will be necessary to make the frame and frame of the chiper, for which pipes and sheet metal are welded in full accordance with the drawing on hand. We recommend using profile pipes made of stainless metal, which will ensure maximum durability and strength of the structure.
  • At the next stage of work, the grinding mechanism is assembled and mounted on the completed frame.

    Due attention should be paid to the strength of fixation of the mechanism and the engine, since when using such a device, the power part will be subject to increased load and vibration, and if the fastening is poor, the chopper will quickly fail.

  • After fixing the measuring mechanism, all that remains to be done is to attach a metal or plastic hopper, connect the drive and test run the completed device. If necessary, additional adjustment will be required, for which the number of teeth in the shaft transmission mechanism is reduced or increased.
  • Garden wood chipper made from scrap materials

    Many gardeners simply cannot afford to purchase a used shredding mechanism and an electric motor to operate a full-fledged garden shredder. However, similar device can be easily made from scrap materials, and such home-made units will be reliable, easy to operate and efficient.

    Washing machine shredder

    Don't rush to throw away your old washing machine. From it you can easily make a full-fledged garden veterinary chopper using an engine and a metal case from unnecessary equipment.

    In the old building washing machine make a household hole for the exit of crushed raw materials. Knives, which can be made from old hand saw. The drive is carried out from the motor present in the washing machine. The receiving container is installed removably directly next to the side hole.

    Garden crusher made from drill

    The simplest shredder for chopping branches can be made from an old unnecessary drill. The operating principle of such a mechanism will resemble a kitchen vegetable cutter.

    You will need an old wooden stool to use as a frame for the chopper. WITH reverse side the stools are attached to a housing with bearings, and a bucket with a small metal funnel is installed on top.

    A bearing is attached to the bottom of the funnel, to which a shaft with installed knives made of durable steel is fixed. It is necessary to connect the electric motor from the drill to the completed shaft with a chain or belt. You can even do without using such a belt drive by connecting a dual-mode drill using a quick-release chuck.

    A garden shredder for branches is a universal tool that can make it easier for gardeners to work in their garden. Can be easily made garden shredder from an electric or gasoline engine and a grinding mechanism. You can also make mechanized tools from scrap materials.

    • garden tools
    • Features and stages of self-production of a garden shredder

    To make a garden shredder with your own hands, it is very important not only to understand its operating principle, but also to know how it works. Otherwise, it will be almost impossible to make the correct drawings and assemble a homemade convenient grinding machine into a single structure.

    Types of garden shredders and their purpose

    The standard design of all garden shredders is similar in most cases, and is represented by the following components:

    • motor;
    • working shaft with knives;
    • metal frame;
    • receiving box;
    • protective casing.

    The shredder design is installed on a standard two-wheeled base, which makes it convenient and easy to move.

    The device allows you to quickly dispose of various garden waste in the form of plant stems, wood waste, fallen leaves, as well as branches and grass or apples and other fruits that have fallen from trees.

    As a result of processing wood or plant waste, you can obtain a useful and very effective fertilizer for feeding plants, the value of which is no less than that of some types of manure.

    Currently, a fairly rich assortment of such equipment goes on sale, but the models on the market differ in technical parameters. To select the right unit, you need to determine the purposes and operating conditions:

    • knife models, characterized by installing the motor on the shaft of a metal disk. The design has a pair or more knives, and the speed and quality of the chopping performed depend on the engine power and the material of the knives. The advantage of such grinding methods is the high-quality processing of soft or freshly cut wood. Also, such a wood chipper helps to get rid of small bushes and dried stem parts annual plants. It should be remembered that the knife cutting machine chops fresh branches with a diameter of no more than 4 cm and dry branches up to 2.5 cm thick.
    • milling models They are similar to a knife branch chopper, but a powerful steel cutter, represented by a coarse-toothed gear, is mounted on the engine shaft. Rotation is performed at low speed, which makes it easy to grind even fairly thick and dry branches, as well as tree bark. It is not advisable to use such a crusher for chopping fresh or thin branches;
    • universal branch cutter is able to work equally effectively with any type of crushed material. This technique is equipped with a universal turbine cutter. The operating principle is based on step-by-step grinding mechanisms.

    Choice electric chain saw woodworking

    The next option for classifying garden shredders is the differences in type of material, used to make the body:

    • metal version;
    • plastic option.

    Power indicators and performance levels allow divide garden shredders into the following types of models:

    • household type;
    • professional type;
    • semi-professional type.

    When choosing, you should focus not only on the size of the branches, but also on the age characteristics of the garden plantings. The amateur version of the units is suitable for processing the thinnest branches and young plants. To chop thick branches, professional models are used.

    How to choose a garden shredder (video)

    The most commonly produced disk version is based on saws. It is necessary to purchase one and a half dozen solid steel blades with attachments for teeth.

    • select or make a set of steel washers-spacers to distribute the disks along the shaft. The standard gap between saws should not be more or less than a centimeter.
    • place disks with washers on the machined shaft, arranging the teeth offset or randomly, which will extend the life of the structure;
    • weld a reliable frame from corners and channels, and then install a foundation base in the lower part for installing the electric motor;
    • arrange pedestals on transverse structures for installing ball bearings with a fixed working shaft;
    • equip a working, durable hopper for grinding with reliable walls and a support plate or passive knife;
    • organize a bell for feeding branches, which is necessary to direct the material into the chopper and protect your hands from injury.

    When pruning garden plants, it is not recommended to mix branches and other wood debris. With separate grinding, quite decent firewood is obtained, and processing is carried out into chips for home smokehouse. It is allowed to make a chopper based on a chainsaw, but creating such a design option is quite labor-intensive.

    How to make a homemade apple chopper

    In addition to the wood chipper, an effective and fairly productive apple chopper is very popular in home gardening. Such a unit is not too difficult to complete, guided by the following recommendations:

    • From sheet metal d 80 mm on a lathe, make exit steps for the shaft and for the bearings;
    • a gear shaft with triangular notches along the entire length of the teeth is made on a milling machine;
    • to make the case, the outer steel part of an old top-loading washing machine can be used, welded into a solid box;
    • making a small gap in the box, which falls on the distance between the working shaft and the housing wall;
    • For smooth rotation of the shaft and its reliable fastening, standard circular bearing units are used;
    • welding from the corners of the support frame and performing wooden base for installing a container to receive the mass coming out of the chopper;
    • the use of special ballasts to equip the control unit, which will allow you to turn the equipment on and off;
    • fixing the belt using a special bolt and screwing the handle and rollers onto the frame, simplifying the operation of the unit.

    On final stage, the housing is fixed to the upper corners of the frame using bolts. The electric motor is located in the side of the structure.

    How to use crushed biomass as fertilizer

    Shredded cardboard, kitchen waste and plant waste are used as biomass for fertilizers. This is an excellent alternative to store-bought fertilizers.

    Very important properly prepare biomass for use in household plots and garden plots as highly effective fertilizers.

    For this purpose, special composters or standard compost heaps are used.

    To the very bottom compost heap a mass is laid, represented by crushed thick shoots perennial plants. On top of this layer is covered with a small amount of already mature compost or fertile soil.

    Then crushed plant waste is poured in layers.

    It is necessary to sprinkle each layer with a two-centimeter layer of garden soil with dolomite or chalk at the rate of a couple of kilograms for each cubic meter of composted mass.

    As a result natural processes, occurring inside the composted mass, a valuable fertilizer is formed, which can be used in almost unlimited quantities to improve the quality characteristics of the soil in the garden area or to feed cultivated garden plants. Compost can be added to the soil throughout the growing season., but the optimal effect can be obtained when applied in spring and autumn.
