Bench with your own hands. (100 step by step photos). Wooden benches - an element of relaxation and design with your own hands What to make a bench with your own hands

A bench is simply necessary in the country or in the garden. Its main purpose is as a place to relax. He who knows how to work, he must be able to rest. Someone simply sets up a bench, while someone creates an interesting corner, which certainly has a good rest. You can just relax, or you can just enjoy the surrounding nature and the results of your work. There are many ideas worth considering. Of particular interest are ordinary designs that can be repeated by anyone familiar with wood and owning a primitive set of tools.

Everyone can imagine what the most ordinary bench looks like, but not everyone likes simplicity and most opt for original solutions. Everyone wants to have something that is not, for example, a neighbor in the country. Almost all gardeners start with decorating their dacha or garden plot, and there are also many options here. As an option, you can do the design of the site from the installation of a bench, having previously decided on a place of rest. After all, a place of rest is not needed later, it is needed now. Therefore, the design of this place should be taken up at the first stages of the process of decorating a summer cottage or personal plot, and only then proceed to the design of the rest of the territory.

As a rule, summer residents are very keen on growing various green spaces and flowers. Especially, there are a lot of them near buildings. Alternatively, you can combine plantings with a recreation area by installing a bench not far from the cottage. In this case, everything will look organic: green spaces, flower beds, and an original bench.

Two flower beds made of boards and a bench between them

There are a lot of options: from the simplest to the most sophisticated. The simplest option would be two wooden boxes, in which flowers are planted, and two boards built between these boxes. Boards must be planed and well sanded. This design can be placed directly near the wall of the cottage. You can attach a pair of the same planed boards to the wall, which will serve as a kind of back. Instead of wooden boxes, you can install concrete pedestals that can last much longer. wooden elements.

It is very simple to build such a structure, and most importantly quickly. As for the boards, they can be bought ready-made or made to size yourself using unprocessed boards. But in this case, you will have to work hard, but the bench will not cost anything, and the result will certainly please. If concrete flowerpots are used, then the boards can be fixed with metal corners. The only problem is the difficulty of drilling holes in concrete. In no case should a puncher be used, since a flowerpot, even a concrete one, will easily crack, especially if it is made independently.

You can not fasten the boards, but instead of the boards put a huge log, which is not necessary to fasten if you install it correctly.

As mentioned above, there are many options, and they are created on the basis of the real possibilities that the owner of the cottage has. Alternatively, you can simply set up a bench to relax away from flowers and green spaces. After all, it is not a secret for anyone that various insects are hiding in flowers and between the leaves of plants, which do not in any way encourage rest, but, on the contrary, make them leave behind the worst memories of the rest.

Hollow blocks can be used as a bench, into the voids of which processed boards are simply inserted, which can serve as seats.

To make it comfortable to sit, the sharp corners of the blocks should be rounded. Well, if these blocks are heavy and large. If the blocks are small, then they can be fastened with studs into one piece.

log bench

The site can be designed in any style, but almost everyone is moving away from standard approaches to solving the problem. Everyone wants to have something of their own. But not everyone knows that the new is the improved old. As a variant of the new, but somewhat improved old, this is the option of using a log as a bench. You can use a log as a seat large diameter, sawn lengthwise. A log of a smaller diameter, also sawn lengthwise, is used as a back. Or a smaller diameter trunk, but cut closer to the edge. Narrow pieces of logs are used as legs.

Log bench - quick and easy

Legs and seats are connected to each other with metal pins. Holes of a slightly smaller diameter are drilled under the pins. The pins must fit into the holes with force. At the same time, half of the pin is hammered by blows on the pin, and the second half is driven by blows to the tree. As a rule, they do not hit the tree itself, since traces of the hammer may remain, but with the help of a wooden tip. Such a connection must be reliable, although there are many mounting options.

In the photo, a little higher, you can see another option, in the style of "ethno". Its organization is associated with the presence of a stone, although this option is quite feasible in the presence of a log. A fairly thick log is used as a seat, and part of a large diameter deck is used as legs. In one and the other part of the deck, grooves are cut out for the seat. An ax or grinder is used as a tool. Alternatively, you can resort to using a chainsaw. These are not post-Soviet Friendships or Urals, which have significant weight, and they, perhaps, are convenient for felling pines in Siberia. If you adopt the Stihl chainsaw, then with its help you can make not such works of art.

It is also possible to make a table out of logs, which is simply necessary in the country. In the photo you can see the results of such actions. The table top is made of boards, and the rest of the ensemble is made of logs of different diameters.

Table with benches made of logs

The next bench, built in this style, has a completely original design. Here, the legs and armrests are made of branches of various thicknesses, and the seat is made of processed, high-quality unedged boards.

Another bench is made in the same style. The only difference is that the boards and branches have the opposite direction. The result is a completely different look. As far as execution is concerned, no special skill is required here. The more careless the end result, the more valuable it is. In any case, this is how others perceive such an approach. Most likely, people are tired of imaginary perfection and they prefer handicraft and primitivism.

Wicker back - you will meet infrequently

Alternatively, you can arrange a recreation area around the tree and install a bench.

Resting place under the tree

It is not at all difficult if you install a swing and a gazebo nearby. Above the bench itself, it is better to build a pergola that looks like an arch. For a good rest, only a pond, fountain or waterfall is missing.

Benches made of metal and wood

As a rule, no one dared to build a metal bench. In the summer, they can heat up to such temperatures that it makes no sense to talk about rest at all. In the case of a cold snap, the picture is the same. The bench becomes so cold that it is impossible to sit on it. But the benches, where a combination of metal and wood is used, are the most in demand. As a rule, the frame is made of metal, which ensures high reliability of the structure, and the seat and back are made of wood, which provides a certain comfort.

Bench from a profile pipe

If the design is improved and soft armrests, soft seats and backs are made, as in the photo, then such a design can compete with the most modern options benches for rest. To make the seats, armrests and backs soft, it is enough to fit suitable material furniture foam. In a similar style, it is possible to build a countertop.

On a note! When using wood, it is desirable to leave gaps of up to 5 mm between individual elements. This is due to the fact that when the humidity of the environment changes, the dimensions of the elements also change.

Stylish benches made of metal and wood

In the process of creating a recreation site, care should be taken that there are no sharp corners, especially in metal structures. This is very important if you have children. All elements of the ensemble, such as benches, tables, garden chairs, are made from round and square pipes, bending them so that smooth transitions are obtained.

Table and bench made of pipes and boards

The presence of metal allows you to bend structures of any shape, although you can’t do it that easily and you need a special device. The presence of such capabilities allows you to bend structures in one go, without using other tools for this, such as a grinder and a welding machine. The main thing is to think over the design to the smallest detail. If a tree is used, then only well processed. Burrs or chips should not be allowed to be present on the wooden elements.

Board benches

The most popular option is plank benches. There are quite a lot of options. There are even designs similar to sofas. If you put them on soft pillows, then you can lie down.

This garden bench is more like a sofa: with sufficient dimensions, you can lie down

Designs of garden furniture, based on a modern approach, are assembled in an elementary way. As a rule, they consist of rectangles with partitions made of more thin wood connected to each other as one.

If you strain and make your imagination work, then from an ordinary shop you can build a work of art if, for example, wooden wheels are installed instead of legs and armrests.

A bench made of boards with a back and wheels instead of sides - looks interesting

One of the most simple designs country bench consists of one board, to which legs are attached in the form of the letter "X". Similar shops were built by our ancestors, although they can be found today.

Traditional shop design

Using a tree, you can build a bench in the form of the letter "P". In this design, it is very important to ensure a secure fastening of the seat and legs. This option involves the use of a thick board or timber for reliability. Alternatively, you can install the board "on edge", for greater rigidity, and for greater reliability, it is recommended to fasten it with metal corners.

This photo shows an option where washed down is carried out at 45 degrees. With the help of a special tool, this is not difficult to do. If all the parts are connected, you get an angle of 90 degrees. If the board is thick and the seat does not sag, then the bench will last quite a long time.

In the photo below you can see another version of an interesting solution, which is characterized by increased reliability. Boards of different lengths are used as legs. The difference in length is the thickness of the board: every second board should be shorter. The structure is connected with nails. Moreover, through one board, the nails are hammered either into the board for sitting or into the board for the legs.

Bench in modern style

original solutions

Along with the classical approach to the process of making benches, there is also an original one, although appropriate materials and tools are needed to solve such a problem.

For example, a bench can also be built from a large stone if an appropriate wooden platform is attached to it.

Bench made of stone and boards

In the presence of bamboo, a seat is also made from it, which will take on a more exotic look.

From bamboo, and whole

Or stone.

Sitting in winter will be unpleasant, but beautiful ...

It all depends on the flight of fancy. The real owner does not have unnecessary things or materials in the country. With a reasonable approach, you can attach any thing, and it will not just lie around in the country or lie dead weight in the garage or in the barn.

How to make a bench: photo reports

Naturally, not every owner has a set of tools for making stone benches, but everyone has a minimum set of tools for working with wood, especially since these are very simple and available tools. Therefore, it makes sense to consider wood structures. Everything that is done with one's own hands is ultimately a matter of pride.

Bench without back

The design, although simple, has a rather spectacular appearance due to the material used. A bar with rounded edges serves as legs. IN last resort, such a beam can be prepared independently from round logs of small diameter, trimmed from 4 sides. The result is the same beam. Therefore, there should be no problems with the construction of the bench. The legs of the bench will be made from this material. To do this, lay the cut bars flat (horizontally) one on top of the other. It is this design solution that brings a certain exclusivity to the design.

A simple shop looks interesting due to the material

The backless bench is 120 cm long, 45 cm wide and 38 cm high. It is possible to round the edges of the beam in any way. In order not to strain too much, you can already find a ready-made, profiled beam. Although, it will cost a lot more, but working with him is a pleasure.

Depending on the size of the bench, it is not difficult to calculate how much timber is needed. If a bar is taken, with a section of 70x70 mm, then with a height of legs of 380 mm, it is enough to put 5 bars one on top of the other. We consider: 45 cm multiplied by 5 pcs. and get 2.25 m of timber. Since there are 2 legs, the timber will go 2 times more, which means 4.5 meters of timber. A board is taken as a seat, 40 mm thick and 90 mm wide. Given the width of the bench, you will need 5 boards, 1.5 meters long. If you calculate more accurately, you will need 1.2 m x 5 pcs. = 6 m board.

At the first stage, boards are cut according to size. In this case, it is necessary to round off all sharp edges. To do this, you can take a planer or just large sandpaper and carefully process the boards. In order not to do much on your own, there is another option: you can simply negotiate at the sawmill and get a well-crafted board, especially since they have all the possibilities for this. It remains only to take and cover them with varnish.

Finished boards

After that, they begin to manufacture the legs, for which the beams are cut into identical segments, 45 cm long, after which they are stacked one on top of the other in 5 pieces. The next step is to connect the legs for stability. In this case, the bars can be fastened with metal pins or using wooden dowels. The distance between the fasteners is 7-10 cm. As a rule, such a connection is made using glue, then the connection is more reliable.

Lines where pins will be placed

Pin connection requires precision drilling of holes, otherwise the bars will not be on the same line. For this, it is better to use a template. In addition, the dimensions of the elements of the legs must be the same, then it will be possible to accurately mark the place for drilling the holes. For those who are familiar with drafting, tape measure and pencil, it will not be difficult to get everything right.

The pins should be installed in a checkerboard pattern, so it is necessary to mark with this feature in mind. In the same way, the boards are attached to the legs at the rate of two holes per board.

From a technological point of view, this is not a bad connection option, but it requires a certain skill and experience with wood. The connection step can be simplified if the leg bars are stacked one on top of the other and rigidly connected with a clamp. Then the accuracy of drilling will be ensured. Alternatively, the beams can be connected using long metal studs and nuts with washers. In this case, it is enough to drill through 2-3 holes.

The seats can be nailed to the legs, which greatly simplifies the entire manufacturing technology of such a bench.

The bench is made by hand. Remaining finishing work

When using nails, it is advisable to hide the caps, as they will then rust, which is completely undesirable. To do this, the nails are hammered so that the hats hide almost 5 mm deep into the tree; for this, you can use a guide. After that, putty is taken, a little sawdust is added to it so that the color matches, and the recesses are puttied. After complete drying, the places are carefully sanded sandpaper. So that the place where the nails are hammered does not stand out against the general background, they are covered with a suitable varnish.

Varnishing technology wooden surfaces quite simple, especially since it is described in detail in the instructions for use.

Bench for giving from broken chairs

If there are two old chairs and there was not enough imagination to adapt them somewhere, then you can make a bench out of them. Only the same and strong enough will do. If they are loose, then they will have to be repaired. The chairs are dismantled so that the backs and legs remain. After that, two chairs, or rather what is left of them, are installed side by side and connect their backs with the help of slats of the appropriate thickness.

Bench from old chairs

To make the structure rigid, at a height of 20 cm from the floor, the structure is connected with the same rails around the entire perimeter. Subsequently, these slats will serve as a footrest, and if the bottom is sewn up, for example, with plywood, then you can store some things here.

We paint the made structure

After the structure is reinforced and sanded, it can be painted. Suitable in this case regular paint, which can hide some of the flaws in the whole structure and especially in old chairs. It remains only to cut a sheet of plywood, lay foam rubber on it and cover it with some kind of fabric. At the same time, one should take into account the fact that the bench will mainly stand on the street until the very cold weather. Therefore, it is better to opt for, for example, leatherette. In any case, the material must be moisture resistant.

Pallet Garden Bench Chair

For a reasonable owner, any material has its own value. Garden furniture can be easily made from cargo pallets. Moreover, it is not particularly necessary to disassemble them: a back is made from one pallet, and a seat is made from the other. It remains only to think about what to make the armrests and legs from.

Here's what should happen

One of the pallets is reinforced with additional bars, which are fastened with self-tapping screws.

Strengthening the corners of the pallet

After that, a timber is taken, with dimensions of 100x100 mm and an arbitrary length, after which 4 identical segments are cut off, up to 80 cm long. They are attached in those places where the reinforcement bars, set in advance, are located. As a result, there will be enough legs, 20-25 cm long. For fastening, self-tapping screws are used, at least 150 mm long. In the process of work, it is necessary to make sure that the bars are screwed correctly so that the legs of the same length can be installed.

Attaching the legs for the armrests

If after these steps it is not possible to obtain an absolutely even structure, then the legs can be filed at the end if the bench does not settle evenly.

The legs are screwed

The second pallet is attached to the rear pillars, and on both sides there are planks for the armrests.

Almost done

If there are no such plans, then you can simply carefully process the wooden elements with sandpaper, after which the bench is simply painted with any paint, any color.

Working drawings of wooden benches

A light and comfortable garden bench can be placed on a cozy veranda or placed in the shade of trees so that you can hide from the heat and enjoy reading a book or a pleasant conversation. So, we will describe the main stages of its manufacture.

Whatever material you decide to make a bench from, so that it is as convenient as possible, certain proportions should be observed during its construction:

  • height: the seat is always located at a level of 0.5 m from the ground;
  • width: not less than half a meter;
  • back height: 0.45 m;
  • angle of inclination: ideal 45°;
  • armrest height: calculated from the level of the seat and should be 20 cm.

If the bench is dug into the ground, the length of the legs increases by at least 70 cm. In this case, its legs are lowered into the prepared pits, covered with stones and poured with concrete. Do not forget to pre-treat the wood with a solution that protects against rot and mold.

DIY bench step by step

The back and seat of the garden bench is best done not with a solid canvas, but with a small distance between the boards. In this case, rainwater will drain completely from them, the boards will be better blown, and the product will be less susceptible to decay:

You can replace the stain with a strong solution of potassium permanganate. A tree treated with a similar composition acquires a dark and saturated color. Depending on the amount of manganese, you can get a shade of walnut or a rich mahogany color.

Bench from wide boards

Flexible vine or wicker bench

Eco-friendly garden furniture, not only a bench, but also chairs and even a table, can be made from pre-soaked willow or vine twigs. You can also use branches of hazel, willow, aspen or even birch, but in the latter cases, the product will last much less, and it will look more rough.

To collect raw materials, it will be necessary to wait for the time of "ripening" of the shoots. The optimal season for harvesting branches is from September to March. It is at this time that the rods acquire the required flexibility:

Types of benches

We have described only the simplest options for making a garden bench. You can make it from almost any material:

If you are planning to make a wooden outdoor bench, it is better to use conifers or larch, which is difficult to rot. Legacy oak or hazel furniture can also be used as a material to create a durable and very original garden product.

Is it worth buying a bench or should you make it yourself?

Buying a bench for the garden, of course, is much easier. Moreover, the simplest of them are quite cheap.

But still, the work done by one's own hands will bring more satisfaction. And with a certain patience and skill, even made from improvised means, it can become an exclusive work that you will not be ashamed to show off to friends and neighbors. For example, in the next photo, the bench is made of ordinary pallets, painted with bright paint and decorated with decorative pillows.

Among small architectural forms, benches and benches are the most common. It can be made from any materials or their combinations: wood, metal, stone, concrete, plastic, glass.

They are everywhere: streets and squares of cities, parks and squares, sports and educational institutions, public institutions and residential premises. An almost obligatory element of landscape design, a plot of a private house or a summer residence.

The easiest and most affordable material to process is wood. Do-it-yourself wooden benches provide an opportunity to save money, demonstrate home craftsmanship and be a creator.

Wooden benches: economy option

Make wooden benches using existing "blanks". It is enough to process a little, to assemble a strong and functional structure - with a seat, back and legs.

Moreover, such "modules" are inexpensive, sometimes purchased for "penny". We are talking about pallets, or pallets.

But not everyone is suitable for garden furniture. Do not use products from non-grade or unedged boards. In the first case, large knots can fall out, in the second, “aesthetic” qualities suffer.

There are cases when the step of fastening the board is clearly not suitable for a bench.

The pallet is a wonderful donor for the shop

A pallet is better, as in the photo. With a corner chamfer removed along the contour.

The width of the pallet is great for bench seating. It must be cut off, the rest can go to the backrest device.

If the width of the back is not enough, then the bench will have to be made from two pallets.

Seats and back are part of the design. Need legs. Let's make pallets from the board itself.

  • the bench may not be stable

rigidity is ensured by the seat, and the area for attaching the legs is quite small. Usually, a lower bundle is added so that they do not “disperse”. A simpler option is to use another pallet as a base (more precisely, part of it)

or two. Do-it-yourself benches, benches made of wood in detail and clearly.

Fixing the back, as can be seen from the examples, can be done with a pair of rails, boards, rope or rope. The assembled shop, its surface is cleaned, sanded, varnished or painted.

You can not cut the pallets in width and make a garden sofa.

There are examples of the use of pallet boards for the manufacture of other products from the class of small architectural forms. There are also flowerpots in the photo.

It is not necessary to spend time disassembling pallets, but it is better to buy standard lumber.

Simple bench forms: board and timber

There are designs and execution options - from the simplest to specimens with wood carvings, worthy of being called real works of applied art.

The easiest way to make - wooden bench without a back.

The drawing shows a do-it-yourself wooden bench, completely made of a board with a thickness of 75 mm.

Bench made of boards and timber

Each element consists of two parts.

The seat with beveled ends is assembled from two boards. If the bench will stand in an open area or outside a heated room, then it is better to provide a gap. It will allow water to drain and compensate for the swelling of the tree.

The leg consists of two glued elements. For reliability end connection a pin (dowel) is inserted. Two short support beams and seat mounts are attached to the leg. The legs and beams are connected with grooves, fixed with glue and self-tapping screws. When assembled, the leg and beam are attached to the seat board with two pairs of self-tapping screws and dowels, holes are pre-drilled under them.

Assembly order

1. Cut out the workpiece;

2. Process the ends and clean the surfaces for gluing;

3. Glue the legs;

4. Beams are attached to them;

5. Gather a shop;

6. Sanded and varnished (or painted).

Images and drawings of a bench from a 30 mm board with a support beam.

Bench from a board 30 mm with a support beam

There are already figured elements in the form of legs with radius cutouts. You can make it easier to work and make them rectangular. The drawing is not a dogma - it can be taken as a basis and changed in the direction of simplification, and in the direction of complication. They do the same with sizes - they make the shop wider, shorter, etc.

What is the difference between this option and the previous one?

One long support beam is used instead of four short ones, it also performs the function of a stiffener for the base - the legs and the whole structure are more stable. The connection of the legs and the beam goes through a thorn-groove, and it is much easier to cut the thorn out. That is, this form is a little easier to manufacture, more stable and gives more room for experimentation.

Below are several options for a similar design, but in a different design.

For example, in the style of minimalism - there are not even protruding edges. Splicing according to the tenon-groove principle is used to connect the legs and the seat.

In this model, the task was simplified as much as possible - they even refused to cut out grooves and spikes. The connection between the legs and the beam in this case is best done using confirmations, and not self-tapping screws (they have a larger contact area). For strength, a couple of dowels are usually added on each side, planted on glue. Hidden fastening of the seat is done on a dowel, open - on a self-tapping screw.

If the bench is not very long, then the beam can be placed below. In such a design, it performs exclusively the role of a stiffener.

In the photo below you can see an unusual case of using a dowel - it fastens the beam to the legs not with a hidden installation, but with an open one.

In this bench, a bar was attracted to the "help" board.

Legs with crossbars and two oblique stops for sitting are made of it. All fastenings are made on confirmations, and the connection of the bar of legs to each other is carried out using grooves.

Here, too, a bar is used for the base. Due to the large thickness of the seat board, it does not require additional support. The lower beam serves as a stiffener.

Making a small bench with a back is not much more difficult. The principle of installation and fasteners is similar to simple benches: grooves, spikes, dowels, glue, self-tapping screws and confirmations.

You can take the design with "solid" legs from the board as a basis. Move them a little from the center to the edge so that the ends of the seat and legs are in the same plane. Attach vertical beams to the legs and screw the back to them.

Bench with carved back

For a model whose base is made of a bar, the back is even easier to make. Two pairs of legs: front - for seat support, rear (high) - for attaching the carrier beam, seat and backrest.

These were light and “mobile” bench and bench designs made of wood, which can be used with equal success in an open area, under a canopy or indoors. There are more massive forms focused on "stationary" placement.

Benches: large format

Making a bench from wood with your own hands for a summer residence involves the use of any form of material. Including those that are used in the construction of wooden houses.

For example, a bar. For reference: a beam is classified as such if the aspect ratio is not more than 1:2, and the smaller side has a size of 100 mm or more. Reducing the size translates such lumber into the category of "bar".

It is not easy to assemble such a shop, as in this photo, with your own hands, but you can.

Assembling the legs is not difficult at all. The only difference from the board and the bar is that you will need more powerful fasteners. For example, such self-tapping bolts for wood.

Under their head, you will have to expand the hole (but the confirmations also require this) and put a washer.

It is much more difficult to install and install the seat.

To “tie” the beam together, three metal studs are needed, with a length almost the width of the seat, and two - the width of the bench, taking into account the legs. It is difficult to find such on sale - you will have to make them from round fittings (stainless steel). The gap between the timber can be maintained with the help of wooden board plates strung on studs. The thickness of the plates should be the same as the three supporting vertical beams that support the seat in the center of the bench.

And this copy is made of even more powerful timber (150 × 100). Its assembly is much easier. Two seat beams are attached from below through short cross beams, which are then mounted to the T-shaped legs.

Another easy-to-execute example using a large-format board. The bearing capacity of the material is such that it does not require the use of reinforcing beams - the seat is attached to the ends of the short legs. The author of the project knows well that the toughest geometric figure- triangle. Therefore, both the configuration of the lower part of the supports and their connection to each other by bolts has the shape of an equilateral triangle.

If it is possible to order two non-standard wooden beams, then making such a bench with your own hands will not be great work: you will need to "add" four short beams (100x100) for the legs and two bars (100x50) for the back.

Bench made of timber

But if there is no such possibility, then instead of a non-standard beam, you can use a pair of standard ones.

Such garden bench from wood with his own hands already uses logs.

The most difficult thing in this option is to make a longitudinal groove and a spike for connecting logs with an ax (or adze). For reliable fixation, you will need another pair of dowels on each side (this is the same dowel, but only thicker and longer). The seat and back can be made of board (as in the photo) or timber. Do-it-yourself benches, benches made of wood - ideas and solutions.

And this version of the bench is already more complicated.

But not much. The main difficulty is to make a back, or rather a notch on it. All fastenings of the parts of the structure to each other pass through dowels.

In principle, such wooden fasteners are strong enough - log cabins with a couple of floors (including wooden churches) were previously built without a single nail.

And a very simple option: two decks with a groove and half a log, sawn lengthwise.

Bench simplicity perfection

Wooden bench

In conclusion, a couple of examples of how you can make a bench out of wood, but not purchased, but found in the nearest planting or forest. Benches, benches made of wood with their own hands from auxiliary material.

In this example, only the seat is made of board, everything else is made of natural material, which had to be selected in thickness and adjusted to fit.

To make the seat of such a shop, you need a professional tool, so you will either have to order a longitudinal sawing of a log, or (which is easier) take an unedged board as a blank.

Note information : , .

In the summer cottage, I really want to have a corner where you can relax and enjoy nature. It is impossible to imagine such a place without beautiful bench. A do-it-yourself garden bench can not only save money, but also fulfill the individual needs and ideas of everyone, because there are a lot of options and techniques for its manufacture, and you can choose the right one for yourself.

Step-by-step diagram of assembling a garden bench with a table

How to choose a place to install a country bench

Before proceeding to self-manufacturing benches, you need to be very careful about where to place it. This issue is worth addressing because the bench is not only an item for the convenience of relaxation, but also the place where sufficient a large number of time, and therefore the view and atmosphere must be suitable. In addition, a lot in its design and installation process will depend on the site chosen for installing the garden bench, as well as its type.

Examples of the location of garden benches from the side of the design solution.

Romantic style bench, openwork

A garden of young trees or a vineyard is good for placement.

Ideally, it would be in contrast with the dense green hedge. Also a good option for such a shop would be a pond, blooming flower beds or just in a secluded corner decorated with flowers.
Retro bench made of "old" wood

It can create a very mysterious atmosphere together with curved trunks located next to old trees, near which flowers of different types are planted.
Bench in combination with decor items
A very popular place to place a bench is a veranda or gazebo. In this case, a do-it-yourself garden bench should be made in a similar style with the existing decor items and the veranda or gazebo itself.
Combined benches and table

This design will be good on a small spacious plot of land, which can be decorated with floral vegetation, can also be located next to the house or under a canopy.

In addition to these options, you can install a bench in a place where children usually spend their leisure time, which will allow you to be near them when they play. A place to rest will be especially well organized if there is a lonely tree on the site, which has a spreading crown, setting a bench right under it.

In addition, you can organize a canopy near the house, under which to put a garden bench. It will be a good resting place even in rainy weather. There is another option to simply determine the place of the bench on the ridges where the crop is grown - it will be convenient for rest between work in the garden.

Important: It is best to choose a location in such a way that there are no annoying objects or buildings, garages, fences and the like in the field of view. It is worth remembering that the view should cheer you up and promote relaxation, and not be a reminder of how much work remains to be done in the country.

There are a lot of options and ideas for implementation that a garden bench made with your own hands can allow you to implement. It is quite simple to come up with a decorative composition with her participation, for example, it looks good on elevations, decorated with boulders or shrubs, and a bench that harmoniously merges into a flower bed also pleases the eye.

Preliminary steps

After the location of the bench has been determined, you need to start planning the future product. In this case, it is worth considering several points:

  1. Size. If the bench is typical in size and there is no desire to design an individual model, then you can use the data from the table.
  2. Back attachment method.
  3. Leg layout. This criterion can be determined based on the mobility of the product. If the bench assumes a stationary structure, then it should be strengthened in the ground with cement, having previously pulled out a recess in the ground of the required size.

Table of standard bench sizes.

Seat height, m Seat width, m Back height, m
0,4-0,5 0,5-0,55 0,35-0,5

When a drawing plan is drawn up, it is possible to easily determine the size of each part of the bench from it, and then proceed to its manufacture.

It is also worth wondering about the material from which the garden bench will be made with your own hands. Each material has its own special nuances that can be used as advantages to achieve the desired result.

Mandatory requirements for the bench

In addition to the previous nuances in the process of designing a product, it is worth considering a certain list of requirements that it must meet. Must be taken into account:

  1. Safety. An unreliable product design should not be allowed, because this can bring a lot of trouble at the time of using it. It is worth choosing only to ensure safe use quality material, as well as fasteners and any accessories.
  2. Convenience. Undoubtedly, such an object in the garden as a garden bench should be comfortable so that nothing interferes with the process of relaxation. To do this, you need to very competently and carefully approach the stage of creating a project and think through all the details in advance.
  3. Immunity to the influence of external conditions. To ensure long-term preservation of appearance and service life, it is necessary to choose only one-piece material at the assembly stage of the product. Additionally, it is worth treating it (in the case of making it from wood material) with special means that can provide protection to the product.

Design Options

There are a lot of variations on which a garden bench can be made with your own hands. When it comes to products from wooden material, then for this you will need the following list of tools and material.

Any country bench has, in fact, the same assembly process. To better understand such a process, it can be viewed in specific example based on the above material.

Reference: A similar principle is used when independently creating a bench made of wood in any version of its execution.

simple bench

In order to avoid any problems in the process of drawing up a drawing, it is possible to use a ready-made one. This bench is very easy to make. It is only necessary to make additional support bars of three larger and smaller sizes. The assembly takes place according to the specified principle.

Reference: You can diversify such a product simply by changing color scheme, as well as drawing various kinds of patterns. But at the same time it is necessary to carry out the processing of wood material.

classical

It is also quite simple in design, plus it is possible to vary with the backrest by changing the location of the slats, for example, making them cruciform. If you approach the process of creating such a shop with the implementation of all these nuances, then it will not be used for a long enough time. For the drawing, you can use the existing one, and take the dimensions of the standard sample.

Folding bench for giving

metal bench

A do-it-yourself garden bench can be made not only from wooden material. You can use a metal frame, which is not difficult for everyone to make, even if there is no experience in metal forging.

Cold forging can also be used to design a frame for a bench, namely, to combine parts into a single structure metal frame. At the same time, you can complement the product with something, decorating it.

The table shows the principle by which a do-it-yourself garden bench is made.

Process Description
Sizing If there is no bench project in which all dimensions will be correctly drawn up, then the dimension of the standard sample can be used. It can be 1500 mm long, 500 mm wide, and the backrest with such values will be 900 mm. If the lesson on creating a garden bench is new, then it is better to use one of the simplest types of products in terms of design and size.
Frame construction The seat is made first. To do this, you need several pieces of pipes, 1500 mm and 400 mm long, each with two pieces. If there are no such segments in ready-made then you need to make them yourself. To achieve a more reliable structure, you can supplement the design with stiffeners welded to the frame.
Leg design The length of the legs should be 460 mm, this is the size you need to make for this pipe. Also, in addition, care must be taken that the front and rear legs are connected to each other. This will provide a better degree of stability.
Backrest manufacturing The back is made in such a way that parts of pipes measuring 1.5 m and 44 cm are welded to each other. After this process is completed, you can start welding it to the already manufactured part of the structure. The backrest is best positioned at an angle of up to 20 degrees, this will provide an optimal level of comfort when sitting on a bench. With regards to the reliability of the backrest, stiffening ribs of the longitudinal and transverse directions will help here.
Polishing At the end of the construction of the metal frame, it is necessary to clean the existing joints, as well as polish metal product and cover with soil.
Manufacturing of wooden elements In order for it to take on a complete look, you need to make wooden parts that will be attached on top of the frame. Such elements can be easily performed using a beam or board. Depending on sizes frame product it is necessary to determine the dimensions of the wooden elements, as well as the direction of their attachment. It must also be borne in mind that all parts must be smooth, without any kind of damage.
Connection of all elements To connect all manufactured elements, you can use electric jigsaw and do required amount holes in the frame and wooden parts for attaching them to each other. As fasteners, it is best to use bolts that have rounded caps, as well as nuts.
Completion of works And the very last touch, before the garden bench is made on its own and ready for use, it is necessary to treat the woody areas with a stain. You can use varnish for such purposes. Such a procedure will protect the material from many undesirable factors.

The good thing about this design is that, due to the material that goes into the design, it is light enough to be transported or repositioned if desired. It is also important that such a product is stable to temperature changes, which will make it possible to use it for more than one year in a row.

Helpful information

In the process of making a garden bench with your own hands, it is better to keep in mind the following rules, which will greatly simplify the work and help to avoid difficulties:

  1. When purchasing material for construction, it is worth considering the percentage of losses when cutting out the required size of parts. It is about 10%.
  2. In order to avoid overspending of the material, and possibly to achieve its savings, it is best to start manufacturing and cutting out the elements and those boards that are the longest.
  3. If there is a desire to make the seat wider than indicated in standard sizes, then it must be remembered that deflections of wood material are possible, in the absence of a supporting frame structure.
  4. To avoid injury, it is better to initially take care of eliminating all angular and pointed areas.
  5. It is also worth remembering that wood material prone to drying out, which must be taken into account when drawing up a drawing and leaving spaces for gaps.

Video - interesting ideas for making a garden bench on your own

A bench as a household item in antiquity competes with a stool. Because if a stump or boulder is already a stool, then a fallen tree is a bench or, if a bough leaves it, on which you can lean with your back - a bench. In the last two forms, she has successfully survived to this day, to which we will return.

A bench, with or without a back, “on a piece of paper” is not a piece of furniture, not a building, not gardening equipment, and is generally not classified in any way. Therefore, it exists in many different types, and no restrictions are imposed on its construction and design. The requirements of ergonomics, strength and reliability must be observed in it, but for oneself, no one has the right to make claims.

Most often, this kind of seat is street: courtyard, garden, country, park. This may be the simplest bench from a board on a pair of logs, a classic rustic bench for gatherings, no less classic garden sofa and park bench, the top row in Fig.

A wooden bench is an exquisite and largely defining face of landscape design, therefore it is the object of close attention of specialists of the corresponding profile. In the 2nd row from the top in Fig. individual results of their investigations. But the prices are my respect, sometimes more expensive than a good furniture set. There is a unique material, and design, and the wages of the craftsmen who embody all this in the product. And most importantly - the complete absence of restrictions on cheating, because they are luxury goods.

Exclusive samples of benches / benches are technologically not so complicated that they cannot be made by yourself. However, in this article we will see how to make a bench with our own hands, being content with the usual carpentry work methods and not even the most difficult of them. It will turn out something like those on the 3-4 rows of Fig. And the acquired skills will be quite enough to create a unique one later, there would be material. You may have to master only the simplest methods of weaving from a vine on your own.

And at home?

The bench, in fact, has never been completely forced out into the street. In business and utility rooms benches-shops were, are and will be. Now they are gradually returning to living rooms: the increasingly popular studio apartment is essentially the same hut where they lived all together in one large room. And the shop for centuries has proved its ability to establish a cheerful and benevolent life in housing not for biryuks. And we will further highlight the section on some types of indoor benches.

What to do?

The seat and back of the bench are almost always wooden. The metal cools, rusts, which is why it requires annual painting, and gradually wears out. Plastic is cheap, requires minimal maintenance at first, but is uncomfortable even on outdoors and / or with intensive use by random people does not last long. We are talking here about the arrangement of private properties, so we are most interested in a bench made of wood, as a harmless, most pleasant to the eye and touch material.

Note: the wooden parts of the benches are impregnated with biocides before assembly. The most affordable in this case is used engine oil. Varnish (prime, paint) the entire product after a week of drying after impregnation. Lacquer is preferable to take acrylic on water based, it somewhat protects the tree from darkening under the influence of ultraviolet radiation.

However, supports/legs or power frame benches may not be wooden. For example, profile metal is better resistant to shocks and impacts and in contact with the ground is more durable than wood, especially concreted. Therefore, for public benches - street, yard - such an execution is preferable, especially since a simple country bench on a steel base will cost less, if only due to the smaller volume of blanks to be delivered to the assembly site.

Bench and stone

A very good garden bench is obtained on a stone base. For example, in pos. 1 fig. flagstone only adds naturalness to the tree and masonry seams do not detract from it at all. The creators of the one in pos. 2, they simply poured the bottle into wire baskets, which at the same time served as supports for the tray-table. A bench with flower girls on pos. 3, nothing prevents them from leaning instead of them on mini-rock gardens. If you build a pergola over such a bench, you get a very cozy alcove, pos. 4.

Note: there are also benches with a stone seat, but a suitable slab will be expensive, the stone for it needs quite valuable rocks, very viscous, resistant to fracture and chipping.

To enjoy your rest

In the country, I want to have a good rest, especially after agricultural work. Therefore, it is highly desirable that the dacha bench meet the requirements of industrial ergonomics:

  • Seat height 400-500 mm.
  • Seat width 500-550 mm.
  • Back height 350-500 mm.
  • Backrest tilt 74-78 degrees.
  • Seat profile (back with seat) is smooth, without a dip under the buttocks.
  • In the region of the neck and knees, smooth bends of the profile are made back and down, respectively, so that you can tilt your head and tighten your legs without feeling a sharp rib.

Note: The dimensions of the bench are selected within the recommended limits individually for height and physique.

Drawings of a garden sofa suitable for such conditions are shown in fig. Its design is quite labor- and material-intensive, but technologically not complicated: there are no parts whose configuration would require the use of patterns or templates. Its significant drawback is a large waste of expensive timber, 1.3 m from a 6-meter workpiece, and a 3-meter one is small. Garden bench-sofa on the trail. rice. it is simpler and a thick beam is not needed for it, but 4 parts need to be cut along the grid. Which, however, in the presence of a jigsaw is not scary.

And the kids too

How children love to play on the benches, it is known whether it is a noisy flock with elbows banging, or the whole puppet world of a little housewife. As well as the fact that at the same time they fidget with enthusiasm, crawl, and, not feeling lateral support, slap. There is nothing wrong here, it's a child's business. But there will be less roar and pouting faces if the children's bench is equipped with low railings. However, she does not need a back, so that several slobs can approach both front and back, or sit on a seat astride, legs dangling.

A suitable hybrid of a bench, bench and sofa in this case is shown in fig. It is better to put this building near the children's playhouse. However, see how it will be more convenient for you, this shop is suitable for adults in size, and it is much easier to make it than the previous one.

By the whole world

A table with benches in the country to each other and ask. On the already equipped, with overgrown trees, the site will have a cozy family recreation area: a table with benches. A diagram with the dimensions of one of the designs of a combined country table with benches in one block is shown in fig. Its design is characterized by ease of assembly and disassembly and the almost complete absence of metal fasteners.

There are only 4 one-piece and somewhat technologically complex connections in this product: manual frezer wood or not. But for the winter, the whole complex is easy to disassemble, fold into a compact package and put away in the pantry. Material - weather and pest resistant wood: tar pine, larch, oak. On the base panel you will need plywood 24-30 mm, waterproof or double impregnated with a water-polymer emulsion.

Note: to the lower edges of the base panels, it is desirable to attach square-section wooden bars with glue and self-tapping screws. This will additionally protect the plywood from delamination. Gluing the connection is mandatory, otherwise, due to capillary blocking, the service life of the panels will only decrease.

Combi for two

Fans of philosophical and romantic tête-à-tête in the bosom of nature may like a paired garden bench chair with a back and a table. For a volume of favorite poems, of course. The scheme of its device is shown in fig. on the right, and the drawings and assembly diagram in fig. below. Material everywhere - 30 mm board. This product is already designed for quite experienced craftsmen, because. patterns are given only for shaped parts (there is a grid pitch of 10 mm), and other dimensions will have to be restored according to the base grid (see appendix); forming a radius of recesses for the backs in the rear support of 1300 mm.

metal based

A professional pipe 40x40x2.5 with welded ends, thrown directly to the ground in the Moscow region, rusts through and through in more than 15 years. And after that, the remaining box can hold the bench no less. There is no need to talk about strength: even Hollywood superheroes do not cut steel with their hands. True, in the USSR they once bungled a rather stupid movie in which the late Lev Durov pierced a metal tank with his finger. Tin, for drinking water.

So, with the strength and durability of metal benches, everything is OK. Garden benches from a profile pipe can be quite attractive, see fig. But pay attention: a pleasant appearance is achieved by using parts bent along the radius. To achieve the same aesthetic effect with straight pipes, you need at least twice as much work and material, as in the lower right in Fig.

To smoothly bend workpieces, you need a fairly expensive and complex pipe bender for profile pipes. Alternative option- hot bending of a pipe filled with sand. But, firstly, at current prices, he needs a forge with a forge: in order to bend the sides of the bench in the tutorials with the help of a propane burner, at the bottom left in the figure, you need to almost completely burn a 20-liter gas cylinder. Secondly, hot bending is a delicate matter. If you manage to ruin no more than 3 blanks before the part comes out without wrinkles and with the ends in the same plane, you are a born blacksmith.

The next circumstance is that the strength of the metal profile bench is significantly excessive. Therefore, if you do this, the main thing is your own taste and invention. And we give a couple of drawings of benches from a professional pipe 40x40x2.5 for a purely utilitarian purpose. On the left in fig. - a large economic, and on the right - Scott's shop. Why she and what to do with her is well known to fans of bodybuilding and fitness.

Is it just a pipe?

Professional pipes are pulled from ordinary structural steel, and nowhere has anyone said that any other metal will not fit on the bench. For such cases, in Fig. a few examples of metal benches. Pos. 1 - a shop for secluded and little visited places. It makes no sense to steal it: the “fat” is scanty compared to the fuss of robbery and disassembly, and the secondary tree is not yet accepted anywhere. Material - steel strip 4-6 mm thick. Violent fun legs from it will not stand, so this shop is mainly for the cemetery.

Pos. 2 - bench / wicker lounger for sun and air baths. It does not press anywhere, the body breathes from all sides. The base is from an old Soviet clamshell, so a child will rearrange it much more conveniently. The supporting frame can be assembled from propylene water pipes instead of now expensive aluminum.

A complete functionally and aesthetically pleasing garden bench, pos. 3 is assembled on the basis of worn parts of agricultural machinery and vehicles. The latter, however, is not necessary: instead of leaf springs, the same steel strip or corner will go.

About transforming benches

Transformable furniture saves a lot of usable space. In a city apartment, this dignity is decisive. Unfortunately, it is the only one: transformable furniture is more complicated, more expensive, serves less of an equal functionality to conventional furniture and requires additional user operations when transferred to a different use case.

“Transfurniture” came to the garden/cottage, probably only under the influence of fashion. A transforming garden bench is most often either a twin bench or a lounger, laid out with a table with benches, see fig. However, basking in the sun is more pleasant after all on something soft, like the braid described above. And if the transformer is a double bench, then it is a garden bench, not a park one. It is not customary to sit with your back to each other between relatives, friends and acquaintances.

There is one more circumstance: there is many times more dust and climatic influences on the street than at home. therefore, if, say, a transforming apartment table, with careful use, will last 7-10 years, then a garden one will last 3-5 years, especially with wooden hinges.

In general, transformable garden furniture is an amateur business. If you want to practice mechanics with kinematics - your will. But it’s really easier and more sense to think over the layout of the site so that everything you need fits there separately.

Benches indoors

A bench as a piece of furniture is absolutely necessary in a bath: they change clothes on it, douse themselves from a gang, rest, having steamed, drink tea with lime blossom, dried raspberries or blueberries. Very helpful, by the way. But to suffice after something cold or to get strong is a devastating perversion for health.

But for a bench, a bath is not a pleasure, but hard labor: every now and then dampness, the temperature can jump from -30 to +60 in 2-3 hours. Therefore, firstly, a tree for a bath bench is required to be resistant to decay, but without resins, tannins, salicylates, aromatic compounds and other natural chemicals. And it needs to be treated only with biocides from refined mineral oils or based on silicone. Steamed skin is sensitive to substances that are harmless to it under normal conditions, and when sweat is reabsorbed, unwanted “additives” penetrate the body.

Secondly, in a small bathhouse, where the beds do not fit, they steam on the bench. And what is this steam, if it squelches under the stomach? Therefore, a bench in the steam room is made in the form of a lounger with gaps or a lattice of small slats, see fig. But even in this case, a porous tree is required, which easily absorbs moisture and just as easily releases it into the air.

Thirdly, there should be no metal parts in the bath bench that can be accidentally touched. The thermal conductivity of the metal is high, therefore, it gives off heat easily. A piece of wood heated to +80 can be touched fearlessly, and a piece of iron at +60 (which is normal for a bath) will burn.

The best bath benches are made from the Asian Tughrak poplar. Its almost complete replacement is aspen or black alder. Linden and birch are much worse, easily rot. Silver poplar, sycamore, horse chestnut or, in the southern regions, ailanthus will last longer. All these types of wood in the bath will not slip only if the bench dries well, for which there should be no gaps in the structure that can retain moisture for a long time. And it is desirable to have the entire product easily disassembled for maintenance and, if necessary, replacement of unusable parts.

Brand shops do not meet the latest conditions and the roads, because. made from special varieties of tropical wood. And a home-made bench in the bath is no worse than a “company” can be made at least according to the drawing in fig. With a thickness of 50 mm seat / lounger boards, its length can be increased up to 2 m in order to bathe lying in full height. Then the width is needed from 60 cm; it is obtained by adding a board and a pair of its heels with legs. The red arrows show the oak leg pads, they greatly increase their resistance to decay.

Not only in the bath

In addition to the bath, the benches, as mentioned at the beginning, are also returning to the living quarters. And not only in studio apartments: in country house or in the kitchen, a bench will save a lot of space. Do not be surprised, a bench under the wall, equivalent to a pair of chairs in the same place, saves about 0.5 square meters. m area. Is this a small oven? corner fireplace, plus you can sleep on the bench. Of course, the view of the house bench should be more elegant, but it is assembled “in furniture style”, from wood on dowels or from chipboard on confirmations. A technologically simple version of a home bench for two riders is shown in Fig. It is also suitable for urban cuisine, if there is no place for a soft corner.

Note: in fig. on the right - options for making the well-known household mini-bench from cash scraps. Height - on the knees; seat dimensions - according to their own fifth point.

Whatever

antique

Here we will talk about benches from improvised materials. Since the log shop is perhaps its oldest variety, we are looking for logs of a suitable thickness, from 200 mm. Because independent logging is prohibited by law (although it is practiced in some places) and does not benefit nature, we pay attention primarily to dry fallen trees (easier to process) or unusable trees cut down in the garden. Curves, knotty - so much the better; visible roughness gives the log bench only more rustic charm, see fig.

Next, you should turn the log into a bench. Here you can find instructions like: “Precisely (carefully) sawing the log along.” Without a sawmill with a centering and feed mechanism? Advisers of this kind about the processing of wood have a clearly vague concept. In fact, a log bench at home can be made in 2 ways.

The first one gives a large waste of material, therefore it is suitable only if there is an excess of it, but it is available to any amateur, and you can work with an ordinary crosscut saw, even a hand one. For those who don't know: the wood is sawn along the fibers with special longitudinal saws. So, first we make cuts on the log to the desired depth more often, pos. 1 in Fig., and break out the pieces with a crowbar (this is by no means only a thieves' tool), a nail puller or a mount. They jump out of dry deadwood as if by themselves, but on damp timber you will have to sweat over the first ones, and remove the others with a chainsaw, it also cuts along, pos. 2.

Next, first, with an ax and a chisel, we remove the remains of chips, pos. 3, and then we rough-out the surfaces with a plow (planer). The finished product is processed with a grinder, pos. 4, or just hand sanded. In this way, a solid log bench is obtained. Debark the sides or leave it as is, and biocide, stain, and varnish the same as you would for any outdoor wood. Slightly rotted deadwood (with dark spots) will first have to be treated with a wood reducer (clarifier).

For the second method, you only need a chainsaw, because. she cuts both along and across. It requires a sure eye, a steady hand and a strong grip, but the result is a full-fledged bench with a back, as in fig. above, with virtually no waste. Technological process in this case, it is elementary, and the bench is completely ready for gatherings 2-3 hours after starting the saw, see video:

Rough but fast and easy

Summer residents-developers, as a rule, do not immediately think about benches. And soon they realize that in vain: on bricks, a box or a random block of wood you can’t rest and don’t really eat. If by this time the first pallet from under the brick has been released, then it will go to the bench, which can be built within an hour, just right.

Pallet benches can also be made in two ways. According to the first, a standard pallet 110x80 cm is sawn into 2 unequal parts, on the left in the figure, which will go to the seat and back. Simple and fast, but on the side struts and legs, on the right there, additional lumber is required, or you need to remove the board from the seat with the back, and an uncomfortable gap forms under what they are sitting on.

The second method requires additional work for disassembling the pallet, see below, but it allows you not to touch the boards prepared for the construction site and the bench comes out more convenient, because. its back is slanted. The first cut is made across the top, where there are more boards, sides of the pallet, pos. 1 in fig. The next one is across the lower side (red line in pos. 2), but from the opposite side of the upper side of the middle bosses (shown by the red arrow).

Next, the part with 2 rows of bosses is disassembled, as shown in pos. 3. The bosses of the upper shield are inserted into the openings of the remainder, pos. 4, for which they will have to be moved apart with a crowbar or mount (double-sided arrows in the same place), and fastened with nails or self-tapping screws, as shown in pos. 5. Remains visible in pos. 4, will go on legs, pos. 6.

How to disassemble pallets

The pallets are assembled on nails with sunken caps, and the nails sit very firmly in them, especially those that have rusted in pallets that have been used for a long time. If you disassemble them as usual, then one or several boards will definitely crack. Therefore, the board being taken away is first slightly gently lifted; it is more convenient to do it with an ax, because. it gives a large footprint. Then the same board is put in place and the nails are pulled out by the hats that have appeared with a nail puller or tongs.

Simple and economical

Construction pallets are made from quality wood, which can subsequently find a variety of applications; at least for the construction of a barn or the construction of a rack. If we already disassemble the pallet, then it is advisable to put less wood on the bench from it. simple bench, which will require hardly half the boards of the pallet, and the bars will all remain for better use, is shown in fig. on right. Its back is somewhat flatter than ergonomics requires, due to the smaller width of the seat; so this bench is quite comfortable.

A bit about technology

Bolted connections are often used in garden furniture. If it is one-piece and not articulated, it is better to hide the bolt heads with washers and nuts with them. The first for aesthetics, and the second so as not to get scratched.

For a hidden connection of wooden parts with bolts, you will need, in addition to twist drill on wood is still feather, on the left in fig. Use a pen to select holes for the head and nut. After assembly, the rest of the threaded body of the bolt is cut off with a grinder and the connection is tightened again, because. when pruned, it weakens. Then the holes are filled with wood putty; you can thickly knead the sawdust yourself on the Express glue (liquid nails) or PVA for wood. Not on office PVA for paper!

As for the hinged joints, steel clips must be inserted into the bolt holes in both connected parts, their diameter must be taken into account when drilling. Without clips, the bolt will quickly break the tree and the hinge will go floundering at random.

Clips for the bolt can be rolled from tin or galvanized. In this case, twice a year, at the beginning and end of the season, 2-3 drops of engine oil are allowed into them. If it is nevertheless rusty and seized, brake fluid will help out, the same 2-3 drops. The rust from it becomes limp and the hinge "lets go" almost instantly. After the "brake" it is again dripped with oil.

The manufacture of furniture for summer cottages also requires thorn-groove joints, on dowels and dowels (through round wooden bosses). In this case, firstly, wooden fasteners are made from the same wood as the parts to be joined. For outdoor use, a certain amount of strength has to be sacrificed in order to ensure that the temperature coefficients of expansion, moisture capacity, swelling and shrinkage of the wood of the entire assembly are the same. Otherwise, the connection will quickly loosen up.

Secondly, it is very, very desirable to make connections for "open sky furniture" with wedging, see fig. on right. The wedges are cut out of hard resistant wood: oak, walnut, boxwood, dogwood. Their thickness is 2-2.5 mm, but not narrower. achievable wood-to-wood connection accuracy plus or minus 1 mm.

An important condition: the wedges must be oriented across the fibers of the attached part, otherwise it may split during landing and subsequently the connection will fall apart. If the parts are connected perpendicular (crosswise), then the wedges in the dowel (nagel) should be oriented at 90 degrees relative to each other. Otherwise, the production of country and garden furniture does not contain anything that would not be subject to ordinary working ingenuity.

Application: how to take dimensions on a grid

Let's look again at the drawing of the paired "romantic-philosophical" bench. How to calculate the missing dimensions? First of all, we visually determine the type of oblique projection; in this case it is an isometry, so both oblique axes are equal.

Then we take a more authentic part, for which the linear size is indicated; in this case, this is a tsarga with a length of 1350. According to the drawing, using the Pythagorean theorem, we determine its length in fractions of the grid step. Correlating it with a known linear size, we obtain a scale factor. If the projection is arbitrary, then it will be necessary to calculate 2 scales for 2 details, for each of the oblique axes.

Then a rather painstaking work begins: the missing dimensions are determined from the drawing in fractions of the grid step and multiplied by the scale. For each pair of parts to be joined, we do a fit check, taking into account that the wood accuracy is 1 mm. If, for example, the spike turned out to be thicker than the groove associated with it, it’s understandable that it won’t fit, you need to look for where the error crept in. If it’s already more than 2 mm, it’s also not good, it will hang out and the error will begin to accumulate in the calculations. And if the spike enters the groove with a gap of 0-2 mm, everything is type-top, they calculated perfectly.
