DIY glider chair drawings. DIY baby rocking chairs. “Street” seating options - gallery

Most people associate a rocking chair with home comfort, rest, and relaxation. Sitting in it, it’s nice to drink a cup of coffee, read a book or dream by the fireplace, covered with a blanket, on a long winter evening. Regular rocking calms, relaxes, and gives peace. It’s not for nothing that everyone loves to swing so much even on ordinary chairs, often breaking them. But it is not always possible to purchase rocking chairs - they are not cheap. In this case, you can make the item yourself.

Types of rocking chairs

There are a great variety of rocking chairs. They differ in design, scope of application, material of manufacture and upholstery, design.

Type of design

Rocking chairs can be divided into the following types according to the type of structure.

  1. On simple radius runners - skis, rocker arms, arcs. These chairs were the first to appear and are still in use today. They are easy to manufacture, but have a drawback - the risk of tipping over when strongly rocked. In this regard, they are made with a low landing so that the center of the generating circle is greater than the center of gravity. There are also varieties with a closing horizontal arc. This model requires the construction of individual drawings taking into account the height and weight of the person for whom it is intended.
  2. On runners of variable curvature. They have no risk of capsizing. Thanks to their length, when tilted back, they prevent the chair from falling, and when tilted forward, they simply push the person out of the seat. When making this model, it is better to use a ready-made drawing, since the process of its construction is quite complicated.
  3. On elliptical skids. They swing very softly. They are often equipped with bumpers at the rear, a step at the front, or springs. It is not possible to make a model on springs at home; this requires special types of wood or a rubberized metal strip.
  4. Glider - sliding rocking chair. Unlike previous designs, its base remains stationary. It swings due to the installed pendulum mechanism. This piece of furniture is difficult option for the beginning master.
  5. Vanka-vstanka is a garden tumbler chair. Does not lose stability in any position. This is due to the fact that the seat is also runners. If you lean back too much, the chair will move to an almost horizontal position, but will not turn over, and with a little effort it will return to its original position. It is quite difficult to construct a drawing of such a chair, but you can use a ready-made one.

Variety of materials

The following materials can be used in the manufacture of rocking chairs.

  1. Tree. Suitable for this conifers, oak and larch. The craftsman will need experience in wood carpentry and knowledge of how to connect parts.
  2. Plywood. The best option for a novice craftsman would be plywood. Working with it will require a minimum of skills and tools; all parts can be cut out with jigsaws.
  3. Vine and rattan. It is better not to take on the job without the skills to work with these materials. You will need skills in proper harvesting, drying and processing of vines, as well as weaving skills. In addition, it is worth considering that the rattan palm does not grow in Russia; its homeland is Indonesia and the Philippines.
  4. Metal. Products made from it are durable, strong, but heavy. To work with this material, you need special welding or forging skills, as well as pipe bending equipment if the chair is made from pipes. As a rule, the frame is made of metal, and the seat is made of wood. Such a chair in an apartment can damage the floor, and it looks more appropriate in a country house or country house.
  5. Profile pipes. Suitable for making elliptical arches. This material, like any metal, also requires welding skills.
  6. Plastic pipes. Lightweight, durable, easy to work with. All you need is fittings and blowtorch. Moreover, the cost of such a product is low.

Application options

Depending on the place of use, rocking chairs are divided into items for home or outdoor use. If you plan to use the product for outdoors(dacha, garden plot), keep in mind that the material will be affected Sun rays, precipitation, air temperature.

Metal is not afraid of changes in humidity. It only needs to be treated with an anti-corrosion compound. Due to its heavy weight, it is better to place this chair on a stone base. It will push through loose soil or a wooden podium. The best option for the street - metal product with a wooden seat or with removable cushions.

Wooden chairs need to be treated waterproof coating. This must be done especially carefully if the product is made of plywood. Before assembly, hot drying oil is applied to the ends of the parts, and then they are slightly flattened with a hammer so that moisture does not penetrate inside. After this procedure, the elements are coated twice with waterproof varnish.

Wooden rocking chairs should not be kept outdoors all the time. Otherwise, the product may lose its original appearance.

The most successful outdoor option are plastic chairs. They do not rot, are not afraid of the sun and wind, and do not require protective coating. Such products are durable and lightweight, they can be moved to any place if necessary.

You should not use upholstered chairs outdoors; it is better to cover them with a blanket or place removable pillows. The upholstery will get wet in the rain and deteriorate.

We turn the most ordinary chair into a rocking chair

The easiest option to get a rocking chair quickly and inexpensively is to make it from an old but strong chair or armchair. You only need to make a couple of runners. To ensure structural stability and prevent tipping, the center of gravity must be shifted downward. To do this, the legs need to be filed under the arches on which the chair or armchair will later be attached.

Instructions for making a vanka-stanka

To make this chair yourself, it is better to use plywood. You can construct a drawing by making calculations yourself, or use a ready-made diagram.

Preparing tools and materials

Before starting work, you need to prepare materials and tools. You may need:

  • electric jigsaw with wood saws;
  • disc sander with a set of attachments of various grain sizes;
  • screwdriver or drill;
  • hammer;
  • brush;
  • sheet of plywood 20-30 mm thick;
  • 50x25 mm block for cladding;
  • 3 connecting bars 30x50 mm;
  • self-tapping screws or confirmants;
  • wood glue;
  • wood antiseptic;
  • primer or drying oil;
  • dye;
  • roulette;
  • pencil;
  • graph paper.

Now you have everything you need. Before proceeding to the next step, treat the plywood sheet with an antiseptic. While you are working on the drawing, it will dry.

Drawing a diagram

The design of the vanka-stand does not require taking into account the individual parameters of future users. If you wish, you can make amendments to the finished diagram. For example, if necessary, such a chair can be made double. Thus, we will assume that you have the drawing.

We transfer it to graph paper, and then to thick paper V full size details. We cut out the patterns and draw out the sides. We will make them from plywood, fasteners from bars, sheathing from slats.

Both sidewalls must be absolutely identical, there must be no bulges or irregularities on the swinging surface, the line must be smooth!

We make parts

Using an electric jigsaw, he cuts out sidewalls from plywood and connecting drawers from bars. The best connection between the parts of the chair is a tenon connection. If the drawing provides for it, we make tenons and cuts for them in the sidewalls. We cut the facing strip from the slats. To ensure that there are as few scraps as possible, when choosing slats, ensure that their dimensions are a multiple of the finished plank. If you have any leftovers, keep them, they will be useful to you when the product needs to be repaired.

We sand all the parts, grind them, and then chamfer them. We process the ends especially carefully. We lightly break their fibers with a hammer so that moisture does not penetrate into them. All elements must be primed and painted, the ends - twice.

Assembling the chair

We connect the sidewalls with drawer bars. If you have finger joint, then we insert the tenons into the cuts under them, having previously coated them with wood glue. If not, then we mark the joints on the sidewalls, make holes with an 8 mm drill, and at the ends of the bars - 5 mm. We tighten it with the help of confirmants - euroscrews.

Now all that remains is to attach the facing strips. In order for them to lie flat, they must first be marked. Each board should have 4 marks, that is, 2 on each side. To make the work easier, you can make a template from a piece of slats by drilling 2 holes in it, then the work will go much faster.

To prevent the planks from cracking when fastening, drill holes along the marks with a thin drill and screw them to the side with self-tapping screws. The distance between the slats should be 15 mm. First make a drawing Prepare all the details of the future chair, mark the places where the elements will be attached Assemble the chair according to the diagram presented

Making a chair out of wood

The tree represents more complex material than plywood. There are several options for drawings of wooden rocking chairs.

The product can be without armrests and have a back that follows the curves of the back.

If you do not have sufficient woodworking skills, you can make a chair whose elements are straight lines. The only exception will be arcs.

The procedure for making such a chair is the same as for the plywood model.

  1. We make drawings and patterns.
  2. We cut out the material. A board of 3000x200x40 mm will be used for the runners, and a board of 3000x100x20 mm will be used for the remaining parts.
  3. We sand and polish.
  4. We prime and paint all the elements.
  5. We mark the joints of the parts and drill holes for the bolts.
  6. We do the assembly.
  7. We put a soft pillow and swing.

We use a pendulum mechanism in the manufacture of a glider

To make such a chair, you need to have good drawings. Although, there are craftsmen who build them themselves, taking dimensions from factory products. The pendulum mechanism is assembled on ball bearings. This applies to both metal and wooden structures. The seat should not be attached to the base, but suspended from it. This allows the chair to swing in a horizontal plane.

Making a wicker chair from wicker

Wicker products are widely popular. If you know how to weave from wicker, you can make such a chair at home. However, the process of making it is quite long and requires patience and effort.

It should be noted that a wicker chair should be comfortable and durable. Its flexibility is achieved due to the vine, which is also an environmentally friendly material.

We make a chair from metal “like wicker”

If you know how to forge products, then it will not be difficult for you to make a rocking chair from metal. It can also be made by welding profile pipe, better than the elliptical section. The seat, back and braid of the armrests can be made from ropes, belts or strips of fabric.

If one person managed to create something, then another will certainly be able to repeat it. All you need is desire and strict adherence to instructions. And it’s not so important what your chair is made of. If you put your soul into your work, the result will bring joy.

The rocking chair is rightfully one of the most popular pieces of furniture. It gains even more popularity if you have a country house. It can be different models, made from different materials. But more preference is given wooden products. You can buy it ready-made, or you can make it yourself. How to make a rocking chair with your own hands and what materials to choose, read further in the article.

Advantages and disadvantages of wooden structures

Wood is the most common material for making furniture. Wooden rocking chair is no exception, thanks to numerous advantages:

  • Environmentally friendly material that emits a pleasant forest smell.
  • Considerable strength.
  • Long period of operation.
  • Possibility of implementing design solutions.
  • Easy to process, including manual processing.
  • Wide selection of wood of any brand and anywhere.
  • Wide color spectrum of material.

The finished rocking chair fits well into any architectural ensemble of the building. It can be installed at any time in convenient location: in the clearing, by the pool, by the fireplace, near the barbecue, etc. Rocking in a chair relaxes, creates comfort for the body and benefits the body. These are comfortable and safe swing for children.

Along with numerous advantages, there are a number of disadvantages, the main one of which is the significant cost of any rocking chair. In addition, the structure is characterized by loss of its qualities and characteristics if it is exposed to rain, fog, and other precipitation. It is also undesirable to keep the rocking chair exposed to the sun for a long time.

Material and its characteristics

To make rocking chairs from solid wood, coniferous species are preferably chosen. It can be pine, spruce, alder or larch. These rocks are characterized by their low mass and low density. Homemade designs with significant mass it will be inconvenient to move. The high density of the material will create difficulties in work.

Coniferous trees have a light gray structure. Easy to process. A significant disadvantage of such wood is that as the humidity level increases, it increases in size. Despite this, conifers are budget option, are widely distributed in the retail chain and have a low cost.

The chair can be made from more expensive types of wood. It could be oak, ash or beech. These types of wood have almost no pores, resulting in high level strength. Ready-made structures are reliable and durable, but have a high cost. Tree species have a light or light yellow color.

To make a chair that swings, high-quality first-grade wooden blanks are used. The moisture content of these workpieces should not exceed 10% at the start of work. If this indicator is higher, then wood is not recommended. It is better to let it dry, since a structure made of wet wood will subsequently dry out and be subject to deformation. The consequence will be its nondescript appearance or complete destruction.

Blueprints

To make a wooden swinging structure, you need to draw up a drawing of the chair. It is better to do it on graph paper, drawing all the structural elements with dimensions. To make a simple rocking chair from wood with your own hands, it is recommended to take an ordinary chair as a basis.

Drawing of a rocking chair made of wood

The simplicity of the design lies in the fact that all elements are attached at right angles and there is no need to cut additional parts. The basis for the entire structure is the size of the seat and the height of the legs. Will be cut to these sizes connecting elements. The next stage of making a rocking chair, according to the drawing and the required dimensions, is to cut the wooden parts.

A square-shaped seat with a side length of 53-56 cm can be made of plywood or a solid piece of wood. The thickness of the seat should be 1.0-1.5 cm. For the rear and front legs, a beam with a section of 4.5x4.5 cm is used. The rear legs are cut to a height of 105-110 cm, the front ones - 55-60 cm. To connect the entire structure, transverse slats are used, with the size length, height and thickness 57x4x1.5 cm, respectively.

This design and dimensions are not a dogma. Based on preference, the shape and size of the parts may vary.

Another example of a drawing

Tool

Making a chair requires the presence of tools. To complete the work you will need:

  • fine-toothed wood saw or electric jigsaw for cutting workpieces;
  • simple or electric plane for processing structural parts;
  • grinding or draw machine for grinding parts;
  • manual milling machine for making grooves and processing connecting strips;
  • right angle or plumb line;
  • screwdriver;
  • hammer;
  • tape measure and pencil;
  • clamp or rubber band;
  • brush or spatula for filling mounting holes.

Considering that the structural elements will not be fastened with nails, a hammer will be needed to fit the parts to each other.

Connecting parts

To attach the seat and legs to each other, you can use two options:

  1. tenon fastening;
  2. connection with glue.

When fastening into a tenon on wooden elements Markings are applied to the rocking chairs. According to it, grooves are cut out in the legs, measuring 2.0x1.5 cm, 2 cm deep. The shape of the connecting slats is prepared for the grooves. Before fastening the parts, the groove and ends of the slats are treated with construction adhesive.

Thematic material:

In the second option, the fastening points are treated with glue and connected to each other. For reliability, epoxy glue is often used. The joints are reinforced with self-tapping screws. The seat is mounted on transverse slats and is also fixed with self-tapping screws.

In both options, a clamp and gaskets are used to finally fasten all the elements of the wooden rocking chair. The cushioning material is installed between the clamp and the rocker. After installation, the clamp is tightened and the rocking chair is left for 24 hours for the glue to completely harden. In the absence of a clamp, the screed is carried out using a rigid rubber band.

Installation of runners

The manufacture and installation of runners can be done in two ways.

First way

It is characterized by simplicity and speed of implementation. It is as follows:

  • To make the runners, a sheet of plywood 1.5 cm thick is used.
  • Using a pattern, two pieces of equal curvature, about 1 m long, are cut out of plywood.
  • Slots are made in the legs of the chair, 1.5 cm wide to match the thickness of the plywood runners. The depth of the slots can be 7-10 cm.
  • The runners are ground along the edge and installed in the slots. During installation, it is necessary to achieve the most identical level of installation.
  • In the places where the runners are planted, it is carried out through hole, diameter 2 cm.
  • The hole is treated with glue and a wooden spike is inserted into it.

Second way

More labor intensive. A block of wood is used as a ski. To equip a rocking chair with skis you need:

  1. IN wooden block, with a cross section of 4.5x4.5 cm and a length of about 1 meter, cut grooves.
  2. Treat the ends of the chair legs to fit into the grooves of the runners.
  3. Place the runner bars in boiling or hot water until the wood becomes pliable.
  4. Using a tool, bend the skis to a certain radius and leave them in this state until completely dry.
  5. Place the dried runners on the legs, having previously treated the grooves with glue.

In order for the runners to serve for a long time, it is necessary to use wood with high wear resistance.

Balance check

A rocking chair made of wood may be uncomfortable when sitting down or standing up. This occurs as a result of the difference in the weight of the structural elements that are located in its front and rear parts. To avoid discomfort, it is necessary to balance the swinging structure.

If the structure is significantly tilted forward, it can be mounted on the runners behind the backrest. cross bars. If necessary, the weight on the slats can be increased by installing decorative elements.

Balanced rocking chair

When tilting backwards, the same counterweight must be equipped in the front part of the rocking chair. This could be an additional shelf for legs. If this weight is not enough, then you can install a niche under the shelf for additional counterweight.

Treatment

The finished structure will be used in different places at different temperatures. Operation in winter and summer, under the sun and in the cold, indoors and outdoors can lead to rapid aging of the tree and various diseases. Material processing will save you from this.

Before assembling the structure, the wood can be treated with stain. Due to its concentration, the rocking chair can take on any shade.

The chair is varnished in 3 layers

To prevent diseases, the tree must be coated with a special antifungal liquid, as well as a remedy against tree insects and pests.

To protect the wood from getting wet, it is recommended to treat it with a special water-repellent liquid.

The finished chair will serve not only as a piece of furniture, but also as a separate design element that will always attract everyone's attention.

A rocking chair can be made of metal, wood, plastic or plywood. However, if you are going to build a rocking chair yourself, then in this case preference should be given to plywood. This is explained by the fact that it will be easiest to draw up a drawing for a rocking chair made of plywood.

Advantages of plywood

  • moisture resistance;
  • durability (a plywood product will not lose its attractiveness even after 10-15 years);
  • environmental friendliness of the material;
  • V special care does not need;
  • easy to saw;
  • low cost;
  • the material bends well.

Blueprints

If you are going to build a rocking chair yourself, then preference should be given to a simple model, which consists of two sidewalls and transverse components.

First, stencils are made from the cordon, which will later be used to cut out parts from plywood (bars, support strips and sidewalls). To do this, you will need a sheet of glued veneer, about 17 mm thick.

Important! Special attention You should pay attention to measuring the sidewalls, since they form the basis of the entire structure (the sidewalls have a curved shape and not a constant width, so calculations may be difficult).

The cardboard template is drawn “by eye”. Standard sizes transverse components 0.7 m in width and 0.6 m in length. However, the size can be changed if desired. Standard support length is 0.07 m.

After the stencil is made, it must be tested, that is, it must be installed on flat surface and shake it. This is necessary in order to understand what the original will look like.

What will you need for work?

To work you will need:

  • plywood sheets about twenty millimeters thick;
  • iron rims, nails and screws;
  • “sandpaper”, masking tape;
  • electric drill and electric jigsaw;
  • glue, foam rubber, leatherette;
  • paint, stain.

Making the base

Process:

  • Trace a stencil on plywood. Then the part is cut out according to the mark. Thus, the first sidewall is obtained. The second one is made identically to the first one.

Simple model of a chair (cell scale 1:10)

Important! Both sides must be the same size.

  • The cut out element is sanded with sandpaper.
  • The supports are attached to the sidewalls using glue. Then the parts are fixed with self-tapping screws.

Important! The bars must be parallel to each other. In the future, the backrest will be attached to them.

  • Using self-tapping screws, attach the first plank to the upper bars. The remaining strips are installed in the same way.

Finishing

The process of finishing a rocking chair made of plywood:

  1. The outer side of the product can be painted with stain in one or two layers.
  2. The inner parts of the sides and ends can be painted with black paint.
  3. After the paint has dried, the ends are reinforced with iron rims.
  4. To give the chair softness, it is necessary to use leatherette. The leather is first used to trim the back of the back.
  5. Nails are used to attach the leatherette to the frame.
  6. To make the soft part, foam rubber (8 mm thick) is used, which is cut to the size of the backrest. Then it is placed in a leatherette case. Using glue, the mattress is attached to the backrest.

If the drawings were drawn up correctly, the result will be an attractive and comfortable rocking chair. It is worth noting that this is not the only option; there are other more complex models.

An armchair is a comfortable and popular piece of furniture, used both at home and in a work environment, and for relaxation, such as a rocking chair. We will look at its features and the possibility of making such furniture with our own hands today in the article.

Types of chairs

The main types of this comfortable furniture:

  • homemade- designed for relaxation (reading, afternoon rest), in addition, they serve as a stylish addition to the interior;
  • country garden- serve as furniture for communication and relaxation after a hard week, work in the garden or vegetable garden;
  • office chairs- help staff and executives relax during short breaks between work.

By type of design, rocking chairs can be divided as follows:

  • with radius runners- the very first species created by humanity has a large swing amplitude and can roll over;
  • with runners of variable curvature- stable, do not tip over;
  • elliptical runners- often equipped with a step, springs, bump stops, and have a soft “ride”;
  • tumbler- the simplest option, often used on summer cottages, the runners are also a seat;
  • glider - modern design, which swings using a pendulum mechanism.
In principle, the purpose of a rocking chair is one thing - rest and relaxation under measured rocking. Chairs with arched runners or gliders are very much appreciated by pregnant women and nursing mothers. Measured rocking calms the nerves, relieves tension and fatigue, the baby behaves calmly during feeding and falls asleep better.

In general, such furniture is very conducive to sleep: if you are tormented by insomnia, then a few minutes of rocking with a cup of warm milk or herbal tea will correct the situation. Rocking in the same rhythm has a positive effect on the parasympathetic nervous system, and the shape of the curved backs relaxes the spine, relieving tension from it; this effect is also beneficial on the autonomic system of the body.

Why does the chair rock?

The center of gravity of such furniture is shifted from the seat to the angle between the seat and the back. The legs are two stripes in the shape of an arc, which allow you to swing without much effort on the part of a sitting person. The amplitude of the swing depends on the length of the runner legs: the longer, the stronger the angle of inclination of the chair, up to the “reclining” position. Short runners give a small swing for measured, sedate rocking.

Did you know? The first man-made chairs were throne furniture for supreme rulers. This furniture was made of expensive material and could be inlaid with precious stones, gold, and ivory. According to archaeologists, the back of Tutankhamun's throne was almost completely buried in gold trim.

Materials that are suitable for building a rocking chair

List of materials - basic and for individual furniture parts:

  • tree - quality wood has an appropriate price, but the furniture always turns out stylish, durable and cozy. Processing such raw materials requires minimal knowledge of carpentry; in addition, you need to select the right materials for final processing, which will protect the tree from external influences;
  • plywood- for the amateur this is the best comfortable material, it is easy to process, the main thing is to think about reliable fixation of the parts. The disadvantage of the material is that it is not suitable for the street;
  • wicker or rattan- great option for furniture, but weaving needs to be learned, and the material is difficult to get, you also need to know the processing rules;
  • metal- working with it requires both skills and special tools, but when correct processing it is a strong and durable material that is resistant to weather conditions;
  • profile pipes more suitable for the manufacture of parts than the entire structure, they are strong and durable, but require skill;
  • plastic pipes- Also a good option in the absence of special skills. Cheap, lightweight, easy-to-work material, not afraid of weather tests.

Did you know? There is still a lot of controversy about the origin and authorship of the invention of the rocking chair. It is undeniable that the new phrase “rocking chair” was introduced into the English dictionary in 1787, literally “rocking chair”.

Determination with chair type

Wicker furniture it looks stylish, beautiful, it is comfortable and light, but not all models fit into the urban interior. This option is ideal for a summer residence. The chair can be placed on the veranda or terrace; it can be easily moved into the house (for example, for the winter); ensembles with tables and small footstools look especially good.

Another excellent country option is metal products, where the frame is metal and the seat and back are made of wood.

Important!In apartment conditions, metal runners can cause significant damage to the floor finish.

A good option is a folding rocking chair made of wood, which can easily be removed from the street into the house. Sofa-type models with a wide transverse part. Just a godsend for a summer house - an option with a canopy: the product can be placed in the garden and you can relax quietly in its shade.

A lightweight tumbler-type plywood model can be placed not only on the terrace, but also in the garden.

Plastic products do not necessarily have a cheap look - they can be stylish items with interesting design. The advantage of the product is price, durability (it is not afraid of pests or weather conditions), and light weight. The products are also quite suitable for modern interiors apartments.

Models for an apartment or house should, first of all, fit into the overall appearance of the interior, be easy to move, and, if possible, not take up much space if the room is small. Ideal in all respects would be a model from bent plywood: the product is not expensive, compact, it can be decorated with covers and pillows from any material, plywood can be painted in any desired color.

Lungs wooden models They will also go well with any type of furniture; a PVC strip is usually attached to the runners of such products to protect the parquet or other covering from dents or scratches. There are many models that have additional equipment: a pouf or a footstool.

An excellent option for a house or apartment is a glider: without skis, but only pendulum mechanism, the model will not cause damage to floor coverings.

Low chair with short legs and soft pillows Suitable for a nursery and will become a child’s favorite place to relax. By the way, there are electronic products on sale for the little ones - a good help for mom when putting her to bed.

Luxurious openwork weaving made of wicker or rattan, depending on the type of model, can advantageously emphasize the design in different styles- “Provence”, ethnic, classic, Victorian. These are durable and lightweight products, and also natural, which is important during operation.

An example of building a simple rocking chair

The most simple model- on two sidewalls with crossbars. The sidewalls will be made in the shape of a boomerang, 14 crossbars are attached to them with a distance of 4 centimeters between them, the crossbars will be supported by supports made of timber.

The main material is plywood 1.5 cm thick, in addition to it you will need:

  • self-tapping screws;
  • jigsaw;
  • drill or screwdriver;
  • a simple pencil;
  • roulette;
  • cardboard for patterns;
  • sandpaper;
  • wood glue.

The sequence of actions is as follows:

Paint the finished model with any composition of your choice (stain, paint). The back side of the frame can be upholstered with leatherette, and a mattress made of the same material can be sewn onto the seat and backrest. Upholstery options and models may vary, depending on your preferences and purpose of the furniture.

An example of making a real rocking chair

Without knowledge of woodworking, it is nevertheless possible to make a simple product with parts that do not have curved lines, with the exception of skis.

To work you will need:

  • wooden board 3000/200/40 mm for skis, for the main structure a board with dimensions 3000/100/20 mm;
  • graph paper;
  • pencil;
  • roulette;
  • jigsaw with wood saws;
  • screwdriver;
  • confirmants;
  • grinder.
Further work consists of the following stages:

Surely every household has old chair, which has nowhere to put. New life You can give it to him by turning him into a rocking chair. At the same time, if the chair is upholstered, you can change it to fabric with a more modern pattern.

Important! The chair needs to be prepared, namely, the rear legs must be filed a little, thereby shifting the center of gravity. You need to file with ready-made runners in order to avoid mistakes.

To work you will need:

  • chair;
  • jigsaw with wood saw;
  • board for runners 4 cm thick;
  • sandpaper or sander;
  • cardboard for patterns;
  • pencil;
  • ruler;
  • screwdriver;
  • bolts.

Further sequence of actions:

Making a product yourself with a minimum of knowledge is, in principle, not difficult. Difficulty may arise when working on arches for runners, so at the end of the article we offer you video instructions for making runners from wood.

Video: how to make a rocking chair

Reading time ≈ 5 minutes

This article is step by step instructions By self-production metal rocking chairs, which also contains photos and videos. Thanks to detailed explanations, you will not go wrong with the choice of materials, and you may also gain new skills that will be useful in future projects.

Materials for making a rocking chair with your own hands

The first thing you need to do is purchase the metal parts for your future rocking chair. You may need to get someone to make you the exact frame shape you need. If you work together with a professional, he will be able to give helpful advice, help with the choice of materials, etc.

A 20 mm (in diameter) steel rod would be ideal for the frame of a homemade metal rocking chair. If you find that the rod is too heavy for the frame, you can use steel pipes.

As a result, as you can see in the photo, you should end up with a set of rods of the following sizes (pay attention to the drawings):

  • A: 4 x 650 mm
  • B: 2 x 268 mm
  • C: 2 x 867 mm
  • D: 2 x 600 mm
  • E: 2 x 896 mm

Of course, you can change the dimensions of a rocking chair made of metal, but be careful in your calculations.

Fitting metal rods

In order for each steel element of the future frame to fit tightly together after welding, their ends need to be adjusted (to understand exactly how to do this, watch the video presented on the site). This will be easy to do if you have a desktop one. As a result, you should get the following:

  • ‘A’ rods ground on both ends
  • ‘B’ rods ground on one side
  • ‘C’ rods ground on one side
  • ‘D’ rods do not require grinding
  • ‘E’ rods do not require grinding

Welds

Start by connecting the rods of the two sides of the rocking chair (B, C, D) as shown in the photo. It is better to do this on the floor in order to ensure a perfectly flat structure. if you have magnetic square for welding, use it. Otherwise use cinder block to achieve an angle of 90º.

After welding the two sides (B, C, D), connect them with rods A.

Shaping

Figuring out how to bend a 20mm diameter steel rod requires a little imagination. Especially if you don't have any special tool like a pipe bender. You will need a pipe and a tree with a forked trunk (as you can see from the photo, the trunks should be close to each other). Place the rod between the trunks and slide the pipe onto it. By holding onto the latter and applying pressure, you will gradually be able to give the rod the desired shape. Try to keep the 'E' parts as similar as possible to each other.

Attach the ‘E’ curves

A durable frame for a metal rocking chair, made by yourself, is almost ready. Now you need to weld parts ‘E’, then ‘D’ and ‘B’ (most likely, they will need to be adjusted quite a bit to the curved ‘E’). The most difficult part of the journey is over!

Sling test on frame

If someone close to you has sewing skills, entrust the creation of the cover to one of them. You can use an old blanket or a durable blanket, from which you will need to cut a 600 mm strip. It should be sewn to the two upper rods ‘A’ so that you get a kind of sling in which you will sit. Very simple and great!

Stripping

If your welds are similar to those shown in the photo, you will agree that such a rocking chair will not have the most attractive appearance. Sanding the seams will take some time, but the results are worth it.

Painting

This is probably the most enjoyable part of the whole job. But first, thoroughly clean the chair frame with hot soapy water to remove dirt and grease. Rinse afterwards clean water and let dry completely.

Hang the frame wherever it is convenient for you. It is better to paint on a warm, not too windy day. The first and second layers will be primer (ground base). But the second one is applied a few hours after the first one. Next comes two layers of base primer (third and fourth), which are applied 24 hours after the primer base. It is better that the last two layers are gray. As a result, appearance a finished rocking chair will be much more impressive. After this, apply matte varnish.

Sling color selection

What color your rocking chair will be is up to you. It is desirable that it be a durable 100% cotton material. By the way, if you already have a piece of light-colored fabric, you can only purchase a special dye and, following the instructions, give it the desired shade.

Sewing a sling

In terms of dimensions, you will need a piece that is 1200mm wide and approximately 1300mm long. It will need to be folded in half so that the result is a rectangle of 600x1300 mm. The two long sides of the rectangle are sewn together, and the resulting sleeve is turned inside out. Each end of the sleeve is also sewn up with the cut edges inward (as in the photo) in order to prevent the sling from quickly wearing out.
