Specialization: master in construction plasterboard structures, finishing work and styling floor coverings. Installation of door and window units, finishing of facades, installation of electrical, plumbing and heating - I can give detailed advice on all types of work.

The base of the bed is an important part of the structure, on which the quality of sleep largely depends. And if previously solid flooring or spring options were used, today a simpler and effective solution- structures made of wooden lamellas. This option creates optimal conditions for human recreation and at the same time is inexpensive. We will analyze all the features of the products and tell you how to install them correctly.

What are the products and why are they needed?

First, let's figure out what a lamella is. This is special wood plate, curved in one direction so that during installation an elastic base is created. Most often, the elements consist of several layers of wood that are glued together, this provides the best springing properties and makes the lamellas much more resistant to deformation and damage.

Used in production different breeds wood: beech, ash, maple, linden, birch. In principle, all options differ in quality if they are produced using technology.

The most popular option is products made from birch; they are distinguished by their affordable cost and good performance indicators.

Now let’s figure out why slatted bed bases are needed:

  • This design increases the anatomical effect of the mattress, improving its properties. Essentially this is perfect solution for orthopedic mattresses, even their manufacturers recommend using beds with just such options. They are best suited for heavy mattresses that are used in modern conditions.
  • The slats reduce the load on the bed frame and the mattress. Due to the spring properties and a separate frame, which is always used for slats, they provide longer service life of structures due to more competent weight distribution.
  • The use of slats can significantly increase the service life of the mattress. This is achieved not only due to proper weight distribution, but also due to the fact that the slats are located with gaps and the lower part of the mattress is well ventilated, which is very important. If on solid bases the lower part of mattresses is often covered with condensation, which is fraught with the formation of mold, then in a slatted structure this problem is absent.

  • Due to its curved shape, the base has a springing effect. In addition, due to the design features, the base of the bed does not creak or make other extraneous sounds even after a long period of use.
  • If you use special latex holders, the base will adapt to your anatomy. The fastening is made movable, which is very important for optimal load distribution and ensuring a comfortable position for the spine.

Aspects of choice

Now let’s figure out how to purchase quality products and what you should pay primary attention to.

In what form are they sold?

In general, slats can be included in the delivery of a sofa or bed, or they can be sold individually, which is very convenient.

It is important to remember that if at least one element in the base is broken, then sleeping on it is not recommended. This is due to improper distribution of the load on the base, and the risk of deformation of other panels, and improper distribution of weight by the mattress, which reduces its orthopedic effect.

The following options can be purchased:

  • Set of slats. Most often, this solution is suitable for those who change all the elements of the base, or for those who assemble the orthopedic base themselves. To buy a set, you need to know the size of the bed or the size of the frames in which they are placed, because in double versions two designs are used.
  • Kits on tape. This option was widely used in models produced several years ago; these days such designs are not used, as there are more advanced solutions. If you have a tape option, then you can buy a similar set and quickly replace the base; this process takes just a few minutes.

  • The armor can also be purchased individually. Most often they are sold in furniture stores or retail outlets specializing in furniture fittings. If you are looking separate element, then it is important to know the dimensions of the lamellas you used - their length, width and thickness, otherwise it will be difficult to choose a suitable solution.

In addition to the slats themselves, you may also need special fastenings. There are a lot of options, so specific solution is selected individually for a particular design.

Which ones are better

Let's figure out what aspects you need to remember when choosing slats:

Illustration Description

Wide slats. Used as a base for mattresses without springs and for options with dependent Bonnel spring blocks. They can be up to 1200 mm long and are most often used on single and half-size beds, although they are also found on double beds.

This option is highly durable; the elements withstand loads well and practically do not break during operation.

Narrow slats. Best suited for mattresses with independent spring blocks. They can be located either at the same interval or in pairs if flexible rubber fastenings on the frame are used.

The option is elastic and provides high rest comfort.

For a single bed you need 13-16 wide slats. If narrow elements are used, then there can be twice as many of them.

It is important to place the elements at the same distance so that the base has the same characteristics over the entire area.

In double designs, the slats are placed in two rows. That is, you usually need twice as many of them as in single-seat options. As for the quantity, it all depends on the width of the lamellas, the length of the base and the required rigidity of the structure.

The standard parameters of the elements are as follows:
  • Thickness 8-10 mm is the optimal solution; it is not worth taking thinner or thicker products.
  • Width from 4 to 7 cm, it all depends on the type of mattress used.
  • The length varies depending on the width of the bed, but usually one slate is made no more than a meter. Another parameter is the distance between the slats; it should be no more than the width of the slats used. Typically this figure ranges from 3 to 7 cm. The gaps can be narrower than the width of the slats.

It is important to choose high-quality holders for latoflexes(this is also the name of the products we are considering):
  • Plastic is the cheapest, but also the lowest quality solution, which can crack with significant force.
  • Polypropylene is a more flexible material that resists damage better and lasts longer than plastic.
  • Rubber is the most elastic option, which allows the lamellas to play, adapting to loads. This is the type shown in the photo on the left.

Aspects of the right choice

Illustration Description

When choosing beds, always count the number of slats in a row. The optimal number for a bed 200 cm long is 20 or more. Experts advise choosing solutions with the maximum number elements, they are more elastic and provide reliable support for any type of mattress.

If length sleeping place differs, then the number of latoflexes will vary.

Material of manufacture. Another important aspect, which directly affects the durability of the structure:
  • Birch is the most common and popular solution, characterized by low cost and good performance indicators.
  • Buk and others hard rocks- a more reliable solution, which costs significantly more. But if quality is important to you, then choose this solution.

There are systems with different levels of lamella rigidity for different areas . This solution is perfect for those who have back problems, those who value comfort and care about their health.

To adjust the rigidity of individual sections of the structure, special jumpers are used, shown in the photo.

How to make a base with your own hands

Let's figure out how to insert a slatted base to replace the old solid flooring, everything is quite simple if you understand the question:

Illustration Description

Holders for slats. You need two of these elements per plank. Plus, it is advisable to purchase a few more pieces in reserve; during work, sometimes individual holders become damaged.

Lamels. Their size should match the holders, and the number should be selected depending on the size of the bed and the distance between the armor. We recommend choosing a clearance of 4 cm, this will give medium rigidity.

To work you will need this set of tools:
  • Jigsaw or hand saw. It is more convenient to cut lamellas with a power tool.
  • Construction square, tape measure and marking pencil.
  • Screwdriver with an attachment for self-tapping screws.

First the bed is vacated. It is necessary to remove the bed and remove the mattress to open access to the base. In our case it is chipboard sheets, fastened with self-tapping screws. The fasteners must be unscrewed, and the sheets removed and put away.

There is a block in the middle. It is wide enough, so there is no need to redo anything - we will use the old frame with some modifications.

Side load-bearing elements too narrow to strengthen the frame holder, a strip is screwed to the old strip. The result was a protrusion of 5 cm.

The slats are cut to desired length jigsaw. Then holders are put on the end and the elements are laid out on the surface.

To control the same gap between the slats, a construction square is used; its width is exactly 4 cm.

Fastening is made through the protrusion at the bottom. We recommend using two self-tapping screws for each holder to ensure reliability.

Can be fastened with elements 25 mm long.

Assembly is carried out in the same way until the very end.. When the base is ready, you can lay the mattress and enjoy a comfortable rest.

If you need to repair part of the base and replace one or more damaged lamellas, then you just need to unscrew the fasteners on the required elements and replace them. Everything is simple and fast.

Grate or solid bottom

If you still have doubts, then let's look at the advantages of lamellas:

  • The slats provide ventilation from the bottom of the mattress, a solid flooring does not.
  • The lattice has springy properties, and chipboard or plywood lies rigidly.
  • Orthopedic properties of the mattress are best manifested when using lat.
  • A solid base bends and creaks over time; the grate does not have these disadvantages.
  • Rack and pinion systems are much lighter, which is also important.

Conclusion

Now you are familiar with all the features of the slats used in the bases for beds and sofas, and you can install them yourself, the video will help you understand the workflow even better and clearly show the important points of work. If you have any questions, write them in the comments.

Lamellas are flat, wooden, slightly curved planks of beech wood, which consist of several layers.
Usually there are 5 such layers, side view.

The lamellas differ in width; they are 35 mm (rare), 53 mm and 65 mm.
The distance between the installed lamellas in the frame can be anything, often it is: 25-30 mm, 45-55 mm, 70-80 mm.

Lamella 53 mm, distance 25-30 mm, the most optimal option.

Lamella 65 mm, distance 20-25 mm, reinforced version.

There are several types of fastenings: on flexible rubber hangers, inside metal profile and on top of a metal profile (frame), the most popular option is the third.

This option of fastening the lamellas is the simplest, cheapest and optimal, the lamellas are inserted into plastic pockets fixed on a metal frame. The only drawback is that plastic pockets can have sharp edges that can ruin the mattress cover, but such a defect is extremely rare.

In the photo, the “top” method of attaching the slats (the pockets were attached by some kind of hand-crank)

Is it possible to break the slats?

It’s possible if you try really hard, but I couldn’t do it even though I tried.

For the purity of the experiment, we will use a living bed with slats (Venice Lux bed)

For such an experiment, a human leg is best; it is better to use someone else's leg, but I only had my own. We place our foot on the lamella, press it forcefully, waiting for a characteristic crack.

Contrary to expectations, the lamella did not break; it bent in reverse side and jumped out of the mount.

We bend it in an arc; I managed to bend it about 20 cm in height. The lamellas can easily bear such loads.

It turns out that even with maximum loads, “bending” in one direction or another, it is difficult to break beech slats.
The defect that occurs most often is the delamination of the lamellas, the presence of knots/defects, or the bending of the lamella in the form of a propeller.

Bitch, I would even say bitch!

Propeller, one end of the lamella fits evenly to the table, the other end of the lamella does not fit very well

Why do you need a lamella frame?

We can talk for a long time about the benefits of such lamella blocks, but I see the advantage that these planks are able to take part of the load on themselves, thereby extending the service life of the spring block or springless filling of the mattress; the mattress is also well ventilated on the lamellas, and this important point mattress in use.

What to do if your leg/arm gets stuck between the slats?

I can’t imagine what needs to be done for this, but still, if this happens, then you will need the help of a more sober friend, otherwise you risk being “stuck” there together.
If a child somehow falls into such a “trap,” then simply bend the slats in different directions, one up, the other down, and remove the stuck part of the body.

How to replace a broken lamella?

Replacing a broken lamella is simple: bend it, squeezing it on both edges, and insert it into the mount. It may not work out the first time, but if you buy spare slats in our store, we will give you the opportunity to practice on our beds :)

What are slats made of?

The slats are made of wood!
The main material is beech, sometimes birch (softer), and some pine (less durable).

On this I will finish.
If you have questions that you haven’t seen answered, write or call.

P.S. I don’t have a photo with my leg stuck between the slats.

So, experts agree that the greater the number of lamellas, the better it will be. However, we immediately note that for a double bed 30 slats will be enough. For a single bed, their number is halved.

Quite often you can encounter a situation where there are only 20-25 slats on a double bed; this is the manufacturer’s savings on consumables. A design with lower lamellas becomes less durable and not flexible enough.

The distance between the slats should not exceed the width of one strip; as for thickness, the standard size is 8 mm. The length of the slats depends on the width of the bed.

It is important to consider and know these points not only when choosing a bed, but also if during its operation there is a need to replace the slats.

Methods for attaching lamellas

Fixation is carried out using a tip holder, which can be made from:

  • rubber;
  • plastic;
  • polypropylene.

The holder is secured with rivets and staples. Also, in some cases, provision is made for fastening into special pockets made at the base of the frame.

The main reasons for lamella failure

  • Exceeded permissible load. If the lamellas are bent in the opposite direction too much, they break;
  • Marriage, substandard. The lamellas can break if low-quality wood with an uneven structure or poorly dried wood was used in production.

In any case, regardless of the cause of their breakdown, they will need to be replaced; broken slats cannot be repaired.

What if repairs were needed? How to change them

To dismantle the strip, it is bent towards the bend until it comes out of the groove, after which it moves to the side. This may be necessary if the bed frame needs to be repaired. If the lamella is broken, it is not recommended to glue it; it would be correct to replace it with a new one.

To dismantle the lamella, which is fixed with special holders, you will need a hammer, pliers, and a screwdriver. It is easier to remove the holder if you first remove the damaged lamella. Dismantling is carried out based on the type of holder and the method of its fixation. It may be necessary to remove the fixing pins, remove the brackets, and unscrew the screws.

Contact us, we will advise you and help you decide on the choice of slats, taking into account all the requirements to restore the comfort and convenience of your sleeping place.

For beds, slats can be made exclusively from wood. The most commonly used birch and poplar. This material was chosen due to its flexibility and resilience. The wood also contributes to the excellent ventilation of the mattress.

A double bed with slats is an ideal orthopedic sleeping option.

Experts believe that 30 slats are enough for a double bed, and several times less for a single bed. Manufacturers do not adhere to this opinion and place 20-22 pieces. But if you decide to make slats and a bed with your own hands, you can independently calculate their number.

Option for a double bed with a standard set of slats.

The benefits of making furniture with your own hands

Among the advantages of making your own bed and slats, the following factors are noted.

  1. Environmental friendliness. Natural material, that is, a tree, will not be able to adversely affect human health.
  2. Durability. Product made with my own hands, will last for many years. The bed can withstand a large load, which confirms its strength.
  3. Custom size and design. The bed will be made with your own hands according to your drawings. You can adjust its size and shape to the desired parameters. You don't have to look for a place to place a large bed.
  4. Saving. This applies not only to indoor space, but also money. You calculate the quantity yourself required material, and buy them. It will cost several times cheaper than buying it already ready product in the shop.

Option self-installation lamley

The designs of single or double beds made of wood are quite similar and quite simple. Both types of furniture consist of the following parts.

Durable lamellas with metal fastenings, installed by yourself.

  1. The mattress on which a person will sleep is located on a flat base or slats. For the first option, use a thick sheet of plywood. The lamellas are transverse strips. This design is preferable. The mattress will not deform on it; the slats themselves are quite elastic. This design is more comfortable for sleeping.
  2. Planks or plywood are placed on a frame made of high strength beams.
  3. Side panels or legs can be used as a support to which the frame is attached.

Slats are a durable orthopedic base for beds.

When choosing the size of your future bed, it is recommended to rely on the parameters of the mattress. It is also worth considering the location and location of the product. Standard size single bed - 200-210 cm length and 90-100 width. For a double bed, the length remains the same, but the width is 180-200 cm, that is, it doubles.

Standard slats for bed bases.

The height of the product is a rather subjective parameter. It all depends on your preferences.

Purpose of the cross bar

It has already been noted that instead of cross bar a thick sheet of plywood can be used. It is worth noting the advantages and purposes of the lattice in order to understand that it is preferable.

Selection of the type of attachment for the slats at the base of the bed.

  1. Reduced bed load. Due to this, the quality of the product is enhanced, the service life is increased.
  2. Spring quality. The bar is elastic and therefore all the load that acts on it is distributed evenly.
  3. When you sleep, your spine will assume the correct position.
  4. The grille is fixed with the help of special holders. This makes the structure reliable and subsequently avoids squeaks and noise.
  5. The bar is positioned in such a way that it can be natural ventilation sleeping space on all sides.

The process of creating a bed base and frame from slats

Necessary materials

Before you buy everything you need and make your own bed, as well as slats, you should: detailed drawing. For double bed standard parameters The following materials will be required.

The process of distributing slats along the base of a single bed.

  • 3 boards with dimensions 200x30x3 cm. They will become the walls and headboard of the product.
  • 2 boards measuring 250x30x2 cm. They will become the sides of the bed.
  • 5 bars, each length 200 cm, section 4x4. Needed for the manufacture of supporting structures, supports and legs.
  • The rail is 150x4x2 cm in size. It will become a transverse bar at the base of the bed. A rail is needed to secure the headboard boards.
  • Stain.
  • Wood glue.
  • Self-tapping screws.

The lamellas can be attached either using fasteners or using self-tapping screws.

It is worth clarifying once again that the amount of material is indicated for a standard double bed. You should select everything in accordance with the parameters of the future product and drawings.

How to correctly insert the lamellas into the mount.

Required Tools

For self-assembly bed and making a crossbar you will need a drill, cutter, sandpaper. Also prepare a hacksaw, a pencil. For measurement and accuracy, rulers, tape measure, square are useful. Among the tools needed for self-made beds should have a plane, a screwdriver and a jigsaw.

Installation of slats in the base of the bed can be done independently; this does not require any expensive equipment.

Manufacturing process

After purchasing the required materials and preparing the tools, you should begin marking and further cutting them. It is recommended to adhere to the following rules in this process.

The ideal method for attaching slats is with metal fasteners.

  1. Make a detailed drawing of the future bed, indicating all the exact parameters.
  2. Write a list of all the parts needed for the product. Indicate how much material is needed for each of them.
  3. It is recommended to make markings in places for future cuts using a cutter or pencil and always a ruler.
  4. When making parts with identical parameters in several copies, you should make one and leave it as a template. This will make the process easier and faster.
  5. The cut areas must be cleaned with sandpaper.

Ortho frame for baby crib

After making the marks, you can begin building the frame.

Slats are increasingly being used for perfect and solid foundation for beds.

Using the taken parameters, saw off 2 end and long boards, which will become the sidewalls.

Reinforced block of slats for a high-quality bed base with a high degree of load.

Gather the resulting pieces into a rectangle. To fasten them together, you can use wooden spikes or eyes. Cut holes with a jigsaw. Can be hollowed out with a chisel.

The resulting eyes are lubricated with glue and connected. Align everything at a 90 degree angle and, using clamps, secure until completely dry.

Choose the type of lamella fastening that will be the most durable and reliable.

The frame is ready. It is quite reliable and strong. To assemble the base wooden bed was an easy process, you should connect the parts using self-tapping screws that have additional fastenings and metal corners.

Orthopedic double bed frame made of slats.

After the frame, they begin to install the legs. Cut several bars of identical length. They are mounted in the corners of the product. They can be inserted into the frame or secured from the outside, from the inside.

Lifting bed base

To insert the legs directly into the base, use tenons to secure them. This is the most reliable option. If the width of the bed exceeds 220 cm, the 5th leg should be installed in the middle of the product. For this purpose it is mounted longitudinal board, to which it is attached.

Bed base mounted on five legs

Final stage

Now you can proceed to the assembly of the lamella base. These are transverse slats that support the mattress and prevent it from deforming.

Slats at the base of the sofa

  1. Stuff the base, side and end of the mounting lock rail.
  2. Mark at least 100 mm above the edge.
  3. The rail is attached around the entire perimeter using a solid line and a dotted line. You can use a metal corner instead.
  4. You will need a block with a section of 30x30. Use it to make a frame for the crossbar. They fasten it according to the internal parameters of the base.
  5. Then a rail measuring 150x4x2 cm is stuffed onto the frame. Fasten it across the length. The distance is at least 5 cm.

The lamellas must be attached to the metal frame with metal fasteners.

If you perform all the steps, following strictly made drawings, you will not have problems with installation. At the final stage, the base should be treated sandpaper and coat it with varnish.

Lmelederzhatel can be completely invisible, but at the same time as durable as possible.

You should carefully consider the choice of covering for the finished bed. After all, it must completely fit into the interior of the room. Before coating the product with varnish, it is recommended to first tone it. Stain is suitable for this.

Enhanced metal mount for wooden slats

It should be applied evenly using a brush. The surface should be varnished only after the stain has dried. It is necessary to make 2 layers of varnish.

Sleep can only be healthy if correct position the torso of the sleeping person.

Today, ordinary mattresses have been replaced by orthopedic ones.

Beds that have slats in their design serve as an orthopedic bed themselves. Strengthening the action of the mattress, orthopedic slats for the bed help to reduce the load on it.

If the usual one is used, then the only correct solution in this case, purchase a bed based on slats.

Lamels are a set of pre-slightly curved planks. They have another name - armor. They form a springy frame lattice, on top of which the mattress is laid.

The armor is mounted on a metal frame made of a square pipe.

From birch ( economical option), poplar or beech (for expensive products) orthopedic slats for the bed are made. Additional protection They are protected from moisture by treatment with paints and varnishes.

The wooden lamella has greater elasticity due to the fact that the wood fibers have one direction. This is how they compare favorably with boards, plywood, and chipboard, which are difficult to bend.

According to experts, the more slats, the better. The optimal quantity for is 30 lamellas. A single room, accordingly, should have half as much.

According to some manufacturers, 20 and 22 are enough wooden partitions for beds with lengths of 190 cm and 200, respectively. But they also agree that the flexibility of the bed increases with the number of slats.

The gap between the battens should not exceed the width of one strip. This value is 53 mm. In some cases the width is different. The length of the slats depends on the width of the bed. Their usual thickness is 8 mm.

The slats can be attached to the bed frame with a special holder-tip.

It can be made from:

  1. Plastic;
  2. Rubber;
  3. Polypropylene.

The holder is attached to the frame with rivets or furniture staples.

According to another option, a separate lamella is placed directly in a special metal frame-stand.

There are varieties of frames that have an internal lamella. They already have holes prepared for fastening the holders. This design does not require the use of rivets, which increases its reliability.

Advantages of slats for beds

Their popularity is explained by the advantages:

  1. Elasticity. The springy properties of flexible bed slats allow the body load to be distributed correctly. The spine takes a natural position during sleep. Taking a horizontal position, the body experiences different loads in different places. Among women more pressure test the hips, in men - the chest.
  2. Plastic lat holders are different no squeaks, which is so important in the silence of the night.
  3. Increasing the service life of the mattress. Taking the full weight of a person, the slats softly spring and redistribute the weight of the mattress.
  4. The spaces between the plates give good ventilation mattress. This ensures the absence of bad odors and moisture, as well as the appearance of harmful microorganisms.
  5. Affordable price.

Easy repair

One of the serious advantages of lamellas is their ease of use.

If one of them accidentally breaks, it can be easily replaced.

First, a new lamella is purchased.

Further actions:

  • Raise the frame where it breaks;
  • Remove the lath holder from the frame;
  • Remove the damaged armor;
  • Install a new one;
  • Secure the lath holder.

In a small room, a folding bed is relevant. It is easy to remove after a night's sleep. With hard orthopedic folding beds on slats, they provide a comfortable sleep.

High bed strength is ensured metal frame from a steel tube 22 mm in diameter. Pipe thickness 1.2 mm. An additional support runs along the center of the bed, increasing its strength.

The folding bed has a base on transverse slats. At their ends (in places where they are fixed to the frame) there are special attachments that prevent squeaking.

Folding beds must have at least 14 slats. This amount is enough for normal back support. Unlike a conventional folding bed, this bed does not press down.

The folding bed set usually includes a 6 cm thick mattress with Hallcon filling. It's exclusive environmental material, having high strength. He guarantees long term operation.
