The widespread use of modernism in architecture gave rise to a huge number of directions. One of the most memorable forms for its deliberate rudeness and harshness is the direction of brutalism. Initially founded in the UK, it has spread massively in Europe and the USSR. The period of the 50-80s of the XX century fell on the peak of its popularity.
The founder of the direction was the architect Le Corbusier. His post-war projects served as the starting point for a married couple of English architects Alison and Peter Smithson. The term "brutalism" coined by them - "raw concrete", was described in detail in articles that revealed the nature and views of the new direction.

Four-room apartment with an area of 170 square meters is located in a new building, where customers invited architects at the stage of buying real estate. “This is a very practical approach, in the future it allows both architects and clients to avoid many problems,” Alexander and Anna note. - Especially considering the aesthetics of minimalism we have chosen. The laconic and maximally functional layout is made taking into account the preservation of the panoramic view from all points of the apartment. Practicality and originality in the process of creating an interior often become antonyms: original planning ideas require abandoning simple rational decisions, designer designs take up too much space ... It seemed that such a contradiction would arise when working with this apartment. Its owners set the task for the specialists of the ART-UGOL Design studio: to make the housing functional and at the same time give individuality, bring the spirit of brutality into the interior. The designers coped with the task - in a standard one-room apartment created stylish interior, where there is everything you need: a living room, a bedroom with a large double bed, full kitchen with a bar area and a bathroom. The design of the living room, kitchen and bathroom is based on the contrast of "cold" and "warm" materials with pronounced textures.
One of the brightest details of the interior, which forms its individuality, is outer wall bathtub covered decorative plaster imitating stone. Its different facets can be seen from the hallway, living room and kitchen. The embossed gray surface, lined with clear intersecting lines, is the very brutal “highlight” that its owners wanted to see in the apartment.
The authors of the project fenced off the entrance hall from the room with a built-in wardrobe, thus forming the design of the bedroom-living room: from the side of the living room, a niche was formed, turned into a sleeping area. The bed is set on a podium from which drawers are pulled out. A thick dark curtain separates the bedroom from the living room.
The photo clearly shows how the horizontally arranged panels of light laminate visually expand the living room space. For the same purpose, the ceiling and the upper part of the walls are painted white.
The functions of the dining room are performed by a wooden bar counter - the inhabitants of the apartment decided that this was quite enough for two. The wall, finished with decorative plaster, is varnished from the side of the kitchen, so it will be less dirty.
In the combined bathroom, the motif present in other rooms is repeated: a combination of cold black-gray-white colors with warm wood. Plumbing original form allows you to give individuality even to such a small room.
