OSB board with decorative coating. Lacquer for osb plates. Advantages of staining OSB

Oriented Strand Board (OSB), which is used inside a dry room, does not need any additional protection from moisture. In the worst conditions, the outer skin of the house from this slab turns out to be. Over time, it darkens not only from rain, but also from solar ultraviolet radiation. Of course, it is possible to close the slabs with siding or blockhouse, but this comes at a high cost. How to treat OSB (OSB) board from moisture is not an easy question. Let's try to answer it.

Moisture resistance of oriented strand boards is characterized by the amount of swelling in thickness during the day. According to this parameter, according to the American standard PS 2, European EN-300 and Russian GOST 10632-89, the plates are divided into 4 types (see table).

OSB-1 25
OSB-2 20
OSB-3 15
OSB-4 12

Recall that for outer skin buildings, only OSB-3 and OSB-4 boards are allowed.

If the constructed structure still somehow gets off, then during the construction of the OSB slabs lie on the construction site in packs. Even after one rain, several top sheets swell almost one and a half times. They stay that way even after drying. The rest of the sheets swell at the ends. By the way, in North American products, the ends are painted with blood-red impregnation to avoid this.

There is an opinion among some builders that OSB boards do not need additional processing, since they are already impregnated with resins, waxed, and varnished. Experience shows that after 2-3 years their appearance loses its original freshness, they darken, individual chips bulge out in some places, and the joints protrude sloppily.

Therefore, additional hydrophobic treatment will not be superfluous, especially if it is the facade of a residential building without any cladding. Consider how to process OSB board from moisture.

1. Transparent impregnations

The cheapest treatment option is water-repellent colorless impregnations. There are no special solutions for OSB. You can use any means for wood, with the exception of those prepared on water based. Examples of such compositions:

  • Antiseptic impregnation for wood Elcon on a silicone basis. Designed for long-term protection of wooden structures from atmospheric influences, rotting, mold. Scope: for internal and external works. Forms a water-repellent film, non-toxic, allows the tree to "breathe".
  • Innovative domestic hydrophobic composition NEOGARD-Derevo-40 based on organosilicon oligomers. Designed to impart water-repellent properties to wood products and materials based on it: plywood, chipboard, fiberboard. Water absorption for chipboard is reduced by 15 - 25 times. Obviously, it is also suitable for OSB. Does not change the natural color of the material, the protective properties are preserved for at least 5 years.

2. Lacquering

The most suitable for protecting wood (and OSB) from moisture is the so-called yacht varnish on a urethane-alkyd or alkyd-urethane basis. Some of the popular brands:

  • Tikkurila UNIKA SUPER (Finland). This brand is the leader in resistance to environmental influences, immunity to ultraviolet radiation and temperature changes.
  • Marshall protex (Turkey). Creates a plastic surface film.
  • Marshall Protex Yat Vernik. Possesses the increased izno-and moisture resistance.
  • PARADE (Russia). Retains freshness for a long time.
  • Belinka Yacht (Russia). Dirt- and water-repellent, enhances texture wood materials.
  • Antiseptic varnish for wood "Drevolak" on an acrylic basis with the addition of wax (Russia). Along with antiseptic and antibacterial action successfully protects wood from moisture.

3. Coloring

Since OSB is a product of wood processing, then paints and varnishes(LMB) the same ones can be used for them:

  • Oil paints. Due to the presence of polymer resins in the composition of the OSB, varnish-based paints do not always adhere well to the surface to be painted. For better adhesion to the substrate, it is recommended to perform a double priming with an intermediate putty before painting. Despite this, oil-based coatings under the influence of ultraviolet radiation, temperature extremes and precipitation are prone to fading, cracking, up to flaking. We can recommend a paint based on natural and modified PINOTEX WOOD OIL SPRAY, which resists well to external factors.
  • Alkyd paints are better suited to chipboard, since they include alkyd resin, as a product of the chemical interaction of natural oils with acids. Their adhesion is higher compared to oil coatings, they dry faster and more successfully resist atmospheric influences.
  • Acrylic compositions, being inexpensive and durable in operation, are distinguished by an optimal ratio of qualities and are most in demand for painting wood. In addition, they are available in a wide range of colors.

Attention: pre-treat a small surface in an inconspicuous place to make sure that the material does not swell under the influence of an aqueous acrylic suspension.

In conclusion, we can say that it is difficult to unequivocally answer the question: how to process the OSB (OSB) board from moisture. Firstly: it depends on whether you want to emphasize the texture of the board with a transparent solution or, conversely, apply a covering (opaque) coating. Secondly: - from the financial capabilities and aesthetic ideas of the developer.

OSB boards are usually used for cladding frame or half-timbered houses. That is why the question of finishing the facade arises. You can choose siding or ceramic cladding, but these options are costly and time-consuming. Staining will be much cheaper. For this, they can be used different means. How to paint OSB-plate on the street? This is discussed in the article.

Why do you need to paint tiles?

To understand whether OSB-plates are painted, you should familiarize yourself with their composition and appearance. They are lightweight warm material, which is used in the construction of external structures, internal walls and partitions. The panels may differ in brands, for the outer part dense products are used, the marking of which has the numbers 3 or 4. Since the material is created by pressing wood chips and glue, it is breathable, environmentally friendly, but it is sensitive to atmospheric influences.

When creating boards, wood shavings and chips are oriented longitudinally in the extreme parts, and across the fibers in the middle. Because of this, strength and heat-insulating indicators of OSB boards are created. Do I need to paint OSB outdoors? The surface of the material is pleasant and warm to the touch, but does not have a very attractive appearance. That is why it needs to be painted.

Another reason for coverage special tool it is considered to protect the material, and hence the house, from destruction, moisture, mold, fungi. Although the products are moisture resistant, the connection areas are vulnerable. Therefore, such facades must be painted. Only before this it is necessary to clean the dust, as well as putty and primer. It is important that there is an exposure between procedures. After puttying, it is necessary to take at least 12 hours to dry. The same period is provided for complete drying of the primer.

Paints

There are many types of paint products on the market today. But not every one of them is suitable for this material. How to paint OSB-plate on the street, it is necessary to determine after studying the properties of the paint and the possibilities. When buying, keep in mind that the panels are 90% wood. Therefore, you need to pay attention to the scope of the paintwork.

Alkyd

How to paint OSB-plate on the street to get a high-quality result? Alkyd paint great for these purposes. It is perfectly absorbed into the wood, dries quickly due to the water component. But this fact is associated with a lack of funds.

The paint can be stored at a positive temperature, but when hardened, it can withstand frost up to 30 degrees. The disadvantages include low level resistance to fires, alkalis. Alkyd paint is in demand due to:

  1. The absence of an unpleasant odor, harmful formations.
  2. Quick drying, color retention for a long period.
  3. Excellent hiding power or the ability to get a smooth surface without streaks.
  4. Long service life.
  5. Affordable cost.

Acrylic

How to paint OSB-plate on the street to protect the material from various influences? Suitable acrylic paint, having a polymer component, colors and water. The main property required for outdoor service is the ability to create a reliable film.

Akrids have good adhesion and RWS. These properties affect the demand for facade paints. Manufacturers produce mixtures of not only saturated shades, but also with different physical characteristics. The surface of acrylic paint is matte and glossy, transparent and deaf. These mixtures:

  1. Dries quickly, very durable.
  2. Used for processing porous, loose surfaces.
  3. They are water and steam resistant.
  4. Tolerates significant temperature changes.

oily

How to paint OSB-plate on the street so that the material does not deteriorate from various influences? Oil paint is a classic. Compared to modern mixtures, it is less in demand, because it has some harmful properties:

  1. High toxicity. Protective equipment must be used during work.
  2. Necessary long time for drying, since drying oil becomes the basis for obtaining paints.
  3. Experience is required to apply the product evenly.
  4. Due to the low resistance, it is often necessary to renew the surface.

The advantages include excellent absorbency to the surface, unpretentious storage. Thick paint can be diluted with drying oil.

Latex

What paint to paint OSB boards for high-quality home protection? Are used latex paints suitable for wood. To create mixtures, ordinary water is used, acrylic resin, latex polymer liquid substance. It is with her that the usual acrylic enamel becomes a coloring agent.

The basis of the composition is polyvinyl, silicone, other additives to improve performance. Facade paints are created to obtain textured, dense WWS.

water emulsion

If you are interested in the better to paint the OSB-plate, then you should pay attention to water-based paint. It is used for finishing external walls. The product is suitable for renewing concrete and stone materials, which must first be treated with putty and primer. Water emulsions are divided into:

  1. silicate. The basis includes liquid potash glass. Steam resistant paints.
  2. Silicone. They contain silicone resin and fungicidal additives. After drying, they do not let water through and repel dust and dirt.

The better to paint the OSB-plate from the outside, each owner decides on his own. The above tools are perfect for this job.

Coloring

These products are considered special, so their processing is carried out outside the box. Working surface smooth, can be smooth and somewhat rough. Before finishing, the surface should be treated with a special tool.

The edges can be porous, so the pigment is absorbed on them in an increased amount, which will result in uneven color. It will be possible to eliminate the defect with putty for outdoor work. It will remove joints, seams, after which primer treatment is required. The procedure will improve the adhesion of the dye to the OSB panels. It also protects against harmful influences.

If during installation flaws, irregularities appear, then the entire facade must be puttied. At outdoor work paint is applied at least 2 times. The best visual result and a more durable surface is provided by painting in 3-4 layers.

Staining options

How to paint OSB board outside? This work can be done in one of the following ways:

  1. Spray gun or spray gun. This method is effective for a smooth, durable coating. Coloring with such a device is fast, but increases paint consumption. In addition, the mechanisms are expensive. You can use this method only in calm weather, using a respirator.
  2. Paint brushes. The option is labor intensive and time consuming.
  3. Paint rollers. Rollers are used to speed up the process. With this tool, you can quickly and efficiently update large areas. Used for various mixtures.

Details

The inner surfaces of the OSB boards are sprayed. You can also take a roller for painting the ceiling with a water-based emulsion. In hard-to-reach areas, the product is applied with a brush. When applying the first layer, uniformity must be controlled. If you use a water-based varnish, then you need to make sure that the plates do not deteriorate from moisture. Strokes should be done in one direction.

Before applying the next layer, you need to take breaks to dry the surface. To do this, you need to wait 6-8 hours, the time is determined by the types of paint. Drying should be natural at a stable temperature. Drafts should not be allowed.

The exterior of the house is exposed to negative factors, so you need to choose a quality paint for it. Particular attention should be paid to the ends. The sharp edges of the plates should be rounded with a radius of about 4 mm. Then the surface is cleaned of dust and a primer is applied.

When choosing a paint for finishing, you need to pay attention to the aesthetics of transparent varnishes. Many do not tolerate the sun's rays. Water-based paints often deform the plates. Organic, alkyd, oily products will be the most suitable. The principle of operation is the same as indoors. But at least 3 layers are applied to the facade.

Nuances

First you should touch the joints of the OSB boards. The processing of these areas will be positive, but not for long, because during the laying of the house, the slabs “play” and the putty cracks and falls out of the seams. This will negatively affect the appearance of the facade. There is another design option for narrow sections - the use of decorative overlays. They close the seams after painting. They are needed as protection and design element.

The painting activity is carried out from the top of the wall so that the paint does not flow onto the drying area. You also need to take into account the weather. Finishing is preferable to do at a positive air temperature.

It should be remembered that the painted facade during operation is considered unpretentious, but care is still needed. Usually the materials are impact resistant. Walls should be washed regularly with detergents unless otherwise advised by the manufacturer. Hard-bristled brushes should not be used as this will damage the finish.

Thus, OSB-plates must be processed. Paint would be an affordable and effective option. The house will be reliably protected from various adverse factors.

The technology of frame housing construction allows you to build comfortable housing quickly and inexpensively. External walls such a building is sheathed with OSB boards, which, unfortunately for all developers, do not have the aesthetic appeal required for the facade. Therefore, it is necessary to purchase material for facing the house, which leads to an increase in the cost of construction.

Facade made of OSB boards

Manufacturers of paints and varnishes have taken into account the need of developers for finishing OSB boards and offer their own solutions to this issue. The masters who can create masterpieces from any material did not stand aside. Thanks to these craftsmen, creative solutions for exterior finish frame house.

Methods for decorative coating of OSB panels

Features of OSB boards

Production of OSB boards

Oriented strand board (OSB) consists of several layers of pressed and glued wood chips and shavings. A feature of the manufacturing technology of these types of panels is that the chips in the layers are located in different directions. This provides the material with high bending strength and allows you to securely hold fasteners. On the outer layers of the panel, the chips are located along the surface, on the inner - across.

OSB classification

But despite the longitudinal direction of the wood component, the front side of the panel does not have the smoothness necessary for high-quality staining. Both sides of the OSB board are uneven and rough. This feature has its pros and cons. The advantage is that the lack of smoothness allows you to get a surface with a spectacular texture. The disadvantage is the need for additional processing of the plate various tools and materials.

The market offers several brands of oriented strand panels: OSB-1, OSB-2, OSB-3 and OSB-4. The latter are intended for facial finishing and have a fairly even and spectacular surface. But in the construction of frame houses, OSB-3 is most often used, since they are cheaper and have all the necessary characteristics for building walls. However, the surface of OSB-3 boards needs to be improved.

OSB - oriented strand board

Since this material is the most popular among developers, all the finishing methods proposed below take into account the surface features of these panels and can be applied to products of other brands: OSB-1 and OSB-2.

The choice of staining method for OSB boards

Choosing a method of coloring OSB boards

Transparent coatings

Coloring is the most inexpensive way, which will give the panels an aesthetic appeal. Many developers like the texture of the slabs, which they would like to keep. The irregularities of the surface of the panels during the fall of the sun's rays create a certain play of light and shadow. It is this effect that is most attractive in untreated OSB.

In order to preserve and enhance it, use a transparent paint with an ultraviolet filter. For example, Cetol Filter 7 Plus. This composition is intended for exterior finish wood and is made on the basis of alkyd resins. The coating has a transparency and a semi-matte shade. The composition of the paint includes a UV stabilizer and water repellents that provide reliable protection wood from environmental influences.

Cetol Filter 7 Plus

  • transparent varnishes;
  • azure;
  • transparent impregnation for wood.

Glazes are the most spectacular, as they have the ability to emphasize the pattern of wood and give the painted surface a stylish shade and silky sheen. Wide choose these compositions are offered by the manufacturer BELINKA, in whose assortment the Topazur line, which includes 66 colors and shades.

Belinka Toplasur

Transparent varnishes for wood will give the surface of the plate a gloss. Oil, water or organic based formulations can be used. Acrylic varnish will reliably protect the wood, and yacht varnish will give it a beautiful shade. An inexpensive and practical solution is a semi-matte transparent "Drevolak", designed to cover raw wood and bricks. This composition is easily applied to the OSB and fills all its irregularities.

Drevolak - water-based acrylic varnish for wood protection

OSB board tinting

To emphasize the texture of OSB, you can use stain. To obtain the desired shade, it is diluted either with water, or with a solvent or acetone.

Shades of stains

The technique for staining OSB with stain is as follows:

  • apply paint with a paint brush or spray gun;
  • give time for drying (when diluting the stain with a solvent or acetone, the drying time is 5-7 minutes);
  • apply polyurethane primer on a dry painted surface and wait for it to dry.

Tools for staining wood

To obtain the effect of artificial aging, a patina of the desired color is used. After it dries, the plate is polished with a soft foam rubber sponge, which allows you to remove the remnants of the patina. After that, the patinated panel is covered with a transparent varnish.

Covering enamels

In order to completely hide the protrusions of the chips, dense covering enamels and water-soluble paints are used. The choice is wide:

  • silicone;
  • alkyd;
  • pentaphthalic (forming a dense smooth film);
  • acrylic (water soluble);
  • latex.

Oil paint for wood

have the highest viscosity oil paints. Their advantage is that they are practically not absorbed into the slab. Therefore, the consumption of paint is relatively low. The disadvantage of these compositions is considered a long drying time. But they have the main advantage: a strong covering layer and good adhesion to the surface, which is important when painting OSB. However, oil paints are not recommended for outdoor use due to their instability to moisture and ultraviolet radiation.

Tikkurila. Oil paint TECHO

Alkyd paints meet all requirements for painting facades. These compounds form a thin polymer film on the treated surfaces, which is moisture resistant and does not change its color under the influence of sunlight. Alkyd enamels are able to withstand significant temperature changes, therefore they are recommended for use in regions with any climate.

Range of alkyd coatings

silicone paints are among the most expensive. This is the main reason for their low popularity. This is despite the fact that silicone enamels fully comply with all the requirements of facade work. These paints have good resistance to mechanical stress, crack resistance and water repellency. These compounds can be applied to the OSB board, which has previously been painted or whitewashed.

Facade silicone paint

latex paints have high moisture resistance, therefore they are the best choice for regions with a maritime climate. Due to their excellent covering ability, they are not demanding on the quality of surfaces, which is especially important when finishing OSB boards. Facade latex paints are able to withstand a significant number of freeze-thaw cycles.

Latex water-based paint

Optimal choice for coloring OSB - acrylic facade paints. They are inexpensive and have a lot of advantages: moisture resistant, withstanding sudden changes in temperature, vapor permeable, resistant to UV rays (they do not fade under the sun). Acrylic paints can be applied at any time of the year. But in winter, the air temperature should not be lower than -20 ° C.

Fire bioprotection of OSB boards

The OSB board burns with the release of caustic substances, including toxic hydrocyanic acid. In the event of a fire, it is smoke that is the decisive factor in survival. Using Soppka paints, you can solve two important tasks at once: paint the panel and increase its fire resistance several times over.

Soppka - experts in OSB protection

Soppka compositions and paints are designed specifically for finishing oriented strand boards, so the manufacturer takes into account all the features of the surfaces of this material. The company's products have excellent adhesion to OSB, which cannot be said about other flame retardants. The service life of Soppka coatings is more than 15 years. Paints are able to withstand any environmental influences.

Conclusion

OSB can be painted with any high-quality facade paint intended for fire and biological protection of wooden surfaces. Good feedback about "Valtti Color Satin" from "Tikurilla". This enamel has an excellent covering ability, does not change its color under the influence of sunlight, prevents wood decay, has a noble matte shade.

If it is decided to give the OSB surface perfect smoothness, additional processing will be required, including grinding, priming, impregnation with an antiseptic. All these points have many nuances that you need to know about to get the desired result. Therefore, the coloring of the plates OSB is better look at specific application examples various options finishing of these panels.

Preparation of OSB boards for painting

OSB requires preparation before staining

Before painting, prepare oriented strand panels. First of all, they need to be primed. This is not as simple a task as it might seem at first glance. The fact is that the front surface of the new plates is smooth and rather slippery, so the primer will collect into drops and flow down. For this reason, experts recommend not wasting time and money on priming new slabs, but immediately proceed to puttying or painting them.

Panels that have stood in the open air for some time lose the smoothness of their front side. The surface becomes rough and able to absorb the primer. The composition is applied with a roller on a long handle. The best choice is the Ceresit ST17 primer, the quality of which has been tested by time.

Primer ST 17

Technique for painting OSB boards

When applying the paint with a brush or roller, you may notice that some chips swell with moisture and rise. This occurs regardless of the type of composition selected. If you need a budget solution for finishing the facade, you can ignore these small flaws.

But if there is an intention to do all the work with the highest possible quality, you need to adhere to the following technique:

  • panel priming;
  • installation of fiberglass mesh over the entire area of the facade;
  • puttying with a moisture-resistant and frost-resistant composition;
  • staining.

When choosing elastic paints (for example, Descartes or Emark), the puttying step can be skipped. These paints will perfectly lay down on the grid and close it. After applying the second layer, OSB will acquire a smooth glossy surface.

OSB staining with the effect of artificial aging

This method of processing OSB panels allows you to preserve the texture of the surface while smoothing the most noticeable chip protrusions. In the end, a smooth slab is obtained, on which its natural pattern is clearly visible. With the help of multi-layer staining with compositions of different colors and purposes, they provide two stylish effects at once: color staining and artificial aging.

Tools and materials that will be required to complete the work

  1. Angle grinder (Bulgarian).
  2. Abrasive grinding wheels of different grain sizes: P180 and P320. You can use modern abrasive Velcro, one side of which is self-adhesive.
  3. Abrasive sponge P320.

    Abrasive sponge fine grit P 280-P320

  4. Airbrush or spray gun.
  5. Primers: FI M194 and FL M042/CO2.

  6. Acrylic lacquer "Pearl" JW M120.
  7. Tinted varnish JO 00M294.
  8. Patina GM M048/Black.

Stages of work on painting OSB boards

Step 1 Sanding the Panel

The unevenness of the panel surface is smoothed using a grinder and a P180 grinding wheel. To obtain the desired result, work with a slight pressure of the tool. Each section of the panel is passed with an abrasive wheel no more than three times.

Sanding OSB

Step 2. Applying the first coat of primer

OSB boards are made using a special adhesive impregnation, which includes various resins, wax and paraffin. These substances are necessary to prevent delamination of the panel and the formation of rot and mold in it.

Primer for OSB

Primer application

The primer of the polished OSB surface is needed so that the resins and paraffin remain inside the slab in the future. At this stage of the work, a barrier primer FI M194 is used. It is applied with an airbrush or spray gun. Material consumption within 50-60 g/m2. Further work is started in 1.5-2 hours, after the soil has completely dried.

Step 3. Application of pigment primer

At this stage of the work, cover the panel with a primer FL M042/CO2. This is a composition of white matte color, drying within 2.5-3 hours. Soil consumption should be at least 100 g/m2.

Step 4. Sanding the slab

Use a grinder with an abrasive wheel P320. Take off only upper layer pigment soil. You should get a smooth whitish matte surface.

primed surface

Step 5. Varnishing the plate

Acrylic lacquer "Mother of Pearl" JW M120 is applied to OSB in such a way that the weight of the wet layer is 100-120 g/m2. In order to achieve this result, each section of the panel must be covered with 2-3 layers of varnish. After that, within an hour, they wait for the complete drying of the coating.

Step 6. Patination

At this stage of the work, the black patina GM M048 is applied to the panel. As before, an airbrush or spray gun is used for this purpose. The weight of the wet layer should be 60-80 g/m2. There should be no gaps in the previous white layer on the panel. Patina dries within 5-7 minutes.

Patina for wood Renner GM M048/C01

Step 7. Sanding on the patina

With light pressure, the panel is sanded with an abrasive sponge P320. After such processing, a surface with a clear chip pattern should be obtained, the main part of which white color, and the spaces between the chips - black. This provides the effect of artificial aging.

Remove excess patina with a sponge

Step 8. Coloring the OSB board

Tinting is the stage in which the plate acquires color. Acrylic lacquer is used for this task. The color is chosen depending on how they want to see the facade of their house. Varnish consumption within 100-120 g/m2. Drying time according to the manufacturer's instructions, but on average, 1.5-2 hours.

Acrylic lacquer

It should be noted that in the process of drying the varnish, its color will change due to the gradual acquisition of haze. In this example, JO 00M294 zero gloss varnish is used. If you want to give the facade of your house a gloss, you can opt for compounds that provide this effect.

OSB staining technology with primer-paint

This method of coloring oriented strand boards was developed by Holzer specifically for facades. frame buildings. Therefore, in the instructions proposed by the manufacturer, only its products are used.

Necessary tools and materials for work

  1. Spatula with a narrow metal blade.
  2. Putty Holzer Festspachtel Elastisch.

    Putty Holzer Festspachtel Elastisch

  3. Kohler primer Holzer.

    Kohler primer Holzer

  4. Roller for applying paint (with a foam or faux fur coat).
  5. Container (tray) for paint.

If desired, you can use narrow decorative panels, with the help of which they decorate the facade in the style of "half-timbered".

Finishing example

Instead of plastic panels, you can attach thin wooden bars, pre-treated with an antiseptic and painted in a color that harmonizes with the facade decoration.

Stages of work

Step 1. Puttying the seams between the OSB boards

Holzer Festspachtel Elastisch putty is applied to the seams between the OSB boards. With a spatula, the composition is pressed into the gaps and the putty is embroidered at a distance of 5-7 cm from the seams. They strive to smooth the composition in such a way that a flat surface is obtained without visible cracks. Waiting for the composition to harden.

Puttying

Step 2. Coloring the panel

Using a roller, the Holzer color primer is applied to the plate.

Ground application

The primer dries in about 6 hours

You can choose any color from the manufacturer's catalog (there are more than 7 thousand colors in the assortment). If used fur roller, it is preliminarily kept in water for 1.5-2 hours. If a bucket is chosen as a container for paint, you need to prepare a small piece of plywood on which a roller will be rolled out, removing excess paint from its fur coat.

Coloring technique:

  • paint is poured into the container;
  • dip the roller in paint and roll it several times over a special part of the tray or plywood;
  • apply paint to the wall so that each next layer overlaps the previous one by 4-5 cm.

Holzer paints have good covering power, so for flat surfaces no double coat required. But in the case of OSB, it will be necessary to qualitatively paint over all the protrusions and recesses. Therefore, the manufacturer recommends staining with vertical strokes on the first day of work, and horizontal strokes on the second day. In this case, the coating will acquire the thickness and strength necessary for facades.

Cladding processes are increasingly carried out using oriented strand boards, which have excellent qualities and allow for fast installation. For the subsequent finishing of the obtained coatings, various ways including painting. This method is simple, but has nuances, without which it will not be possible to achieve an acceptable result.

The choice of composition for outdoor and interior decoration OSB boards

In order to qualitatively paint the OSB with your own hands, you need to responsibly approach the choice of the mixture.

Several types of material can be used.

Organic

One of the simplest and most popular solutions, the composition provides a fairly high adhesion to the surface of the OSB panels. Traditional options:

  • Oil. Coloring with such mixtures is widespread, although in last years decreases. This is due to the fact that the products are quite toxic and have a strong odor. The resulting coating has a service life of 3-5 years, after which it fades and loses its decorative qualities.

Oil paint has good adhesion and high hiding power, but has a pungent odor

  • Alkyd. A universal variety that allows you to paint inside and outside the premises. The treated surface has a bright and saturated color that lasts for a long time. Compared to the previous version, enamel is more resistant to any weather conditions, but does not differ in environmental friendliness and a wide decorative range.

Alkyd enamel is usually used for outdoor applications, as it is not environmentally friendly and has a toxic smell.

Water emulsion

The most modern products with high aesthetic and operational qualities. For OSB processing, compositions with a polymer component are used. This list includes:

  • Acrylic. The mixtures are absolutely safe, UV-resistant and easy to apply. When working with particle boards, water-based formulations require high-quality priming and applying the mortar in thin layers. It is necessary to exclude abundant absorption of moisture, otherwise the panel may swell.

Acrylic paint is an environmentally friendly, vapor-permeable and fireproof composition.

  • Latex. It is quite simple to paint the surface with such a mixture, the material has almost the same advantages as the previous one, but it has a higher cost. This includes a rubber variety, ideal for outdoor work.

Latex paints have excellent moisture resistance, but are very expensive.

Primer paint for OSB

On a note! When choosing a composition for different processes, it is better to give preference to certain categories, even though many mixtures are universal. This is especially true for facade work, so in such a situation it is advisable to purchase special solutions.

Primer

In view of the fact that OSB-3 boards, which have low adhesion due to additional treatment against moisture penetration, are most often used for sheathing the internal structures of the room and the facade, priming is a mandatory procedure. In addition, this significantly reduces paint consumption and reduces the likelihood of deformation when choosing compositions based on water.

The following varieties are suitable for this work:

  • Drying oil. This is an easy solution if you plan to use oil paints.

Olif Oksol

  • Betonokontakt. Although any modern polymer-based compositions in the deep penetrating category can be used, this mixture is optimal. It fits well on the surface and impregnates it, forming a rough layer that provides the best grip.

Concrete contact primer is used to ensure maximum adhesion of the paint to the OSB surface

After laying and drying any type of soil, it is necessary to treat the base with decorative or protective materials. During this period, adhesion is maximum.

Impregnation

The following varieties are used:

  • Stain. Like drying oil, it allows you to protect the material from the harmful effects of water, preventing decay. Although the outside of the building is sheathed with moisture-resistant products of classes 3 and 4, OSB-2 boards are most often found inside, they are processed separately. Also, the stain is applied as a decorative layer when varnishing the panels.
  • Flame retardants. They are recommended to process all sides and ends of parts before installation. Flame retardant impregnation reduces the likelihood of fire, and also increases the time during which the material will be resistant to flame.
  • Antiseptics. Such protection is required to prevent the appearance of mold and fungus, the cause of which is most often dampness.

Universal deep penetrating antiseptic

Important! Special attention it is necessary to give the ends of the parts located on the street. They are impregnated more thoroughly, since it is in these places that the destruction caused by the harmful effects of the environment begins.

This composition is more suitable for indoor work. For the floor or ceiling, a colorless varnish is more often used, which ensures the preservation of the natural look of the material. To enhance the entourage, well-defined wood chips can be treated with a stain that is suitable in color, which is not just applied, but literally shaded.

To transfer texture natural wood choose colored varnishes. But the structure of the panel is extremely heterogeneous, so it will not be so easy to get a single coating, regardless of the selected paint mixture. The desired result can be achieved by painting the base 3 to 6 times.

Colored varnishes can imitate a variety of wood species

Features of painting OSB boards outside

Outdoor work involves the creation of a decorative layer that will also play a protective role. For the process, you will need a simple list of tools, suitable for covering walls inside the house:

  • Airbrush. For each composition, the desired option is selected.
  • Paint roller. It is better to provide for the presence of several interchangeable nozzles.
  • Tassels. For work in hard-to-reach places.

Everything you need is purchased in advance.

Surface preparation

Before installing the sheets, high-quality impregnation of the ends of the parts is carried out. Further actions:

  1. If you paint the OSB board on the street, a significant problem may arise: class 3 or 4 materials are covered protective composition from moisture penetration. This layer must be removed, otherwise good adhesion will not work. It will also create the desired plane.
  2. If necessary, the surface is treated with impregnations. After they dry, the base can be primed.
  3. Exterior decoration rarely involves a complete plastering of the surface. To level the seam between adjacent parts, there are two methods: the joints are sealed with a mixture of PVA and sawdust, or overlays are installed, the role of which can play wooden lath. This will also hide the screws.

    Wooden linings allow you to hide the joints between the plates and give the building a unique look.

  4. If you need to get a uniformly painted surface, then the cracks are smeared with an elastic compound and covered with sickle, then a layer of putty is laid. It can also be accompanied by a reinforcing mesh.
  5. Priming is repeated.

After completion of all processes, the facade is left to dry completely.

Paint application

You can cover the prepared surface with the selected solution according to the following scheme:

  1. If necessary, the composition is diluted to the desired consistency. For spraying, it must be more liquid, but because of this, the number of layers increases and the consumption increases significantly.
  2. The solution begins to be laid from top to bottom in a single layer.
  3. Appearing pronounced dark areas are left, they are eliminated only evenly and consistently.
  4. Next, layer by layer is laid until the desired result is achieved. After each treatment, the base dries out.

If you perform all the steps without haste, you will get a coating with a slightly protruding texture of wood chips.

Interior panel painting

The process can be done in two ways, depending on preference. But preliminary preparations are carried out, almost similar to activities for external sites. The only difference is that moldings to hide the seams inside the house are not used, unless it is provided for by the interior design.

Classic method

This method involves a simple application of paint for OSB on the surface of the wall. After preparing the base, the decorative mixture is kneaded and evenly and consistently applied in several layers to all areas to be treated. If putty was previously used, then the painted surface will turn out to be homogeneous, and in its absence, a strong or weak texture will be observed, depending on the amount of material applied.

Coloring OSB without prior puttying allows you to save the texture of the material

It is much easier to process the floor: after grinding it is prepared and covered with 4-5 layers of clear varnish.

decorative way

To decorate the base of oriented strand boards beautifully, you can use various techniques. For example, the aging of the coating. Instruction:

  1. The boards are carefully sanded and primed until smooth.
  2. Acrylic patina is being prepared. It is quickly applied to the desired areas or the entire surface. The longer the mixture is kept on the base, the richer the color will be.
  3. The solution is washed with a rag.
  4. Next, you need to paint the material with a light shade to highlight the darker areas.

An alternative method would be to simply lay down several colors, but each subsequent layer should be "softer" than the previous one.

Caring for Painted OSB

At right choice decorative composition and compliance with the technology of preparation and application, further procedures will be as follows:

  • After 5-7 years (depending on composition), a light treatment with a thin layer of diluted mortar can be applied to revitalize the surface.
  • Significant difficulties arise due to the shrinkage of the house, a more serious reconstruction may be required. But if the frame was set exactly, in compliance with the gaps, then you only need to rearrange the moldings from the outside and small Finishing work inside with subsequent painting in the desired color.
  • Worn flooring is re-sanded and varnished.

Painting OSB is not the most difficult process, requiring accuracy and the exact sequence of all actions to obtain a high-quality result.

Oriented Strand Board (OSB), which is used inside a dry room, does not need any additional protection against moisture.

Is additional processing needed?

Moisture resistance of oriented strand boards is characterized by the amount of swelling in thickness during the day. According to this parameter, according to the American standard PS 2, European EN-300 and Russian GOST 10632-89, the plates are divided into 4 types (see table).

Recall that only OSP-3 and OSP-4 boards can be used for the outer cladding of a building.

You can use any wood products, with the exception of those prepared on a water basis.

It has dirt and water repellent properties, emphasizes the texture of wood materials.
  • Antiseptic varnish for wood "Drevolak" on an acrylic basis with the addition of wax (Russia). Along with antiseptic and antibacterial action successfully protects wood from moisture.

Since OSB is a product of wood processing, the same paintwork materials (LKM) can be used for them:

Do a major home renovation or build your own small house on suburban area in general, not so difficult. To lay the foundation of the structure, it is important to correctly design it and strictly adhere to the indicated parameters during assembly. But the further quality of work depends on how reliable, strong and durable this very frame will be. For example, material such as OSB will help you quickly and efficiently make walls. But then you will have a question, how to paint the OSB slab on the facade and inside? In our article you will find answers to all your questions.

1. Brief description of OSB (OSB)

Many today use OSB boards for wall cladding, ceilings, floors. What is OSB - oriented strand board, which is a composite sheet:

It consists of three layers of wood chips, the space between them is filled with wood chips and non-commercial wood.

The upper layers of the chips are located along the length of the plate, and the inner ones are located perpendicular to the outer ones.

To connect them, a waterproof resin with the addition of wax and synthetic resin is used. boric acid. The manufacturing process itself takes place under high pressure by hot pressing, resulting in the formation of plates.

Important! When buying plates, do not forget about the classification.

Thanks to it, you can determine which stove you need to take for certain jobs:

OSB 1- for internal works, in rooms with low humidity;

OSB 2 - for interior work, in rooms with normal humidity;

OSB 3 - for external work and ceilings with increased humidity;

OSB 4 - moisture resistant with increased strength, used for load-bearing structures.

2. What is the benefit of painting OSB boards?

With their help, you can quickly and cheaply sheathe the house from the outside. After installing the OSB boards, you need to ennoble the surface. Painting is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to decorate. In addition, there are some other advantages:

The paint protects the plate from moisture ingress, thanks to which the plate is not deformed;

With the help of paints we decorate an unsightly appearance.

3. Paint selection

It is possible to get a really high-quality result both in terms of technical and aesthetic criteria only if the building and decorative mortar is chosen correctly. In order not to be mistaken, when deciding how to paint the OSB slab on the facade, be guided by the following possible options. Alkyd paint It consists of resins welded from a special mixture, acids and vegetable oils. After drying, this type of paint leaves a thin but durable film layer on the surface, which protects from the external environment. Advantages:

Cheap price;

The coating gives a moisture resistant insulating layer;

Does not fade in the sun, tolerates frost well down to -30 ° C;

High price.

Important! Can only be used for interior work. Oil paint Oil mixtures are made on the basis of drying oil. This - traditional look if you need to paint the OSB slab on the facade, but it is too outdated and has many disadvantages:

shallow penetration into wood;

Toxicity;

Long drying - more than a day;

Short service life;

High price.

Important! It can be used both indoors and on the facade of buildings. Service life inside - 3 years, and outside the building - 2 years. Quality paint manufacturers: Coloray, Syntilor. Scuba diving The main composition of scuba diving includes:

Micro wax;

There are brands of varnishes that can withstand minus temperature and exposure to direct sunlight. Due to these properties, they are widely used for processing OSB both inside and outside buildings.

Important! When choosing a scuba lacquer for the facade, pay attention to the composition of frost-resistant and sunscreen additives.

Helpful Hints:

The paint must be polymer-based, emulsion in water is not suitable for particle board.

Using compositions based on acrylates, you will get walls that are convenient and easy to clean from dirt and dust.

Please note that if you use oil paint, the process will take a long time, because oil paint takes more than 24 hours to dry.

The varnish extends the service life, while the structure of the plates does not hide.

4. How to paint the OSB board on the facade?

It is recommended to paint the facade of the building with oil, alkyd, acrylic paints. After reading the description above, you can make your choice. Having decided on the paint, you can begin to prepare the surface of the walls for painting.

Important! Since the facade of the building is made of OSB 3 and OSB 4, the main difficulty in painting is that these materials are very moisture resistant. Based on this, it will be necessary to do the front of the preparatory work. Preparatory work before painting the facade:

1. Sand the entire surface sandpaper to get roughness.

2. Prime with an acrylic or synthetic resin primer. You need to process the entire area of \u200b\u200bcoverage.

3. Putty all the joints of the plates. Pay special attention to the ends - they need to be treated with acrylic sealant. Important! If you want to completely hide the structure of the plates, you will need to putty everything completely.

4. Prime with an antiseptic A lot depends on the quality of the chosen primer.

Quality primer:

1. Will cover and insulate the slab well.

2. Creates a good base for paint.

3. Significantly reduce paint consumption.

Important! Examples of some quality primers according to customer reviews:. Master Inter;

MOMENT GROUND;

All of them are sold in 10 liter containers.

Paint preparation and application:

Paintwork materials must be applied in two layers. The first layer must be diluted by 10-15% with an appropriate type of solvent. Important! Please note that each bank has detailed instructions by application, which indicates the brand of the desired solvent.

To apply paint, you need to use a roller or spray gun. Important! In practice, it has been observed that paint consumption is sharply reduced when the spray gun is running.

5. Painting OSB boards indoors

For interior work, boards of category OSB 1 and OSB 2 are used, respectively - both water-dispersion paints and those based on PVA or acrylic can be used for them. Important! Keep in mind that painting OSB boards takes 50% more paint than painting flat surfaces. Technology for painting OSB panels inside the house:

1. Grinding - the surface of the panel must be cleaned with sandpaper. Important! It is necessary to remove the top protective layer - this procedure will help in the future to better adhere the paint to the panel.

2. Sealing - the prepared area should be flat, without cracks, chips. If they are, they must be sealed using a special oil-adhesive compound or wood sealant. After drying, sand again. The joints of the panels can be decorated with rails.

3. Primer - be sure to prime the plates well, evenly distributing them with a brush over the entire area. This is followed by the direct painting of OSB boards on the facade - we do it in several layers.

Important! The first layer should dry well, then apply the second. Description of the roller painting process:

1. Open a can of paint, stir well.

2. Pour into paint tray.

3. Wet the roller into the paint.

4. Squeeze out excess on a special tray plane.

Important! After squeezing, the mixture should not drip or run off the roller.

5. With wide movements, waving, we apply the first coat of paint.

6. You need to apply at least 2 layers to make the look more beautiful, do not regret the paint by making 3-4 layers.

Important! Pay special attention to the joints of the plates. To hide all kinds of strokes, the next layer is performed perpendicular to the previous one. Varnishing is the final phase of work. Lacquering will simplify maintenance and extend the life of the product.

Important! When using alkyd enamel, this process is not required. Painting OSB with varnish It is possible to paint the boards with varnish, and the floors look especially beautiful. Important! If you decide to varnish, use sanded OSB boards. Otherwise, you yourself need to grind with sandpaper.

Coloring technology:

1. Prime the sanded area with a brush.

2. Let dry.

3. Varnish with a roller.

4. To obtain a high-quality result, it is required to apply 3-4 layers of varnish.

Important! After such processing, the plate retains its structure and creates a flat, smooth surface. By adhering to the technology of the process and our tips from this article, you will get a quality result that will delight you for more than one year. You will definitely be satisfied with the fact that you took OSB plates as the basis.

Once again, using OSB boards to finish my house, I thought about how to paint this material if it is used indoors? After all, there are often moments when painting the surface is the most the best option design. Despite all the nuances that need to be considered when painting OSB boards, this design method can be called less costly and difficult than other finishing options. Today I will tell you how the staining process takes place and what mixtures must be selected for OSB boards.

We paint OSB indoors

A little introduction

Even before starting to work with these boards, I learned from my friend that OSB is a composite element that is created by gluing wood chips together. For these purposes, polymers and various resins are used.

How to paint OSB indoors

There is also a classification of this material, which should not be forgotten when purchasing OSB boards:

  • OSB 1 - suitable for interior design of a room where there is a low level of humidity
  • OSB 2 - for rooms with normal humidity
  • OSB 3 - for high humidity and floors that can get wet
  • OSB 4 - are the most moisture resistant, they are used for load-bearing structures

For my room, I used OSB 3 - together with OSB 2, they are best suited for indoor decoration. Deciding once again to play it safe, I chose this particular class, but if you are sure about the humidity of the room, then you can use the second class, usually it is a little cheaper in cost.

What is the advantage of staining

OSB painting

In addition to the ease of painting, there are several other advantages that paint has if it is used for oriented strand board:

  1. Paint serves not only decorative trim for the draft element, but also protects it from moisture. Since water cannot get into the base of the plates, the deformation of the plates becomes impossible.
  2. With the help of paint, the OSB texture is effectively hidden. Because construction material does not look attractive enough, it requires subsequent decorative finishing

Important! The use of the material is better suited for interior decoration, because due to the tendency to deform under the influence of moisture, it must be carefully protected from negative influences.

When I imagined the composition of OSB boards for myself, I realized that pigments would be the best for them. Dissolving in organic matter, such a layer is ready to serve as a strong coating for the slab, and with a long service life, there is generally no need to update the finish more often than once every 8-10 years. Although such materials are often used in facade work, pay attention to the products of International Paint, Sigma Coatings, Sterling.

The most popular for painting plates are oil compositions. They adhere well to wood, and are also quite viscous. It is this property that prevents paints from soaking into the material too much. Forming good coverage, this option can serve as a decoration in your room for an average of 3-5 years. Despite the fact that some consider oil paints to be an outdated material in wall painting, they are quite high quality and varied. Use to paint OSB quality materials, for example, "Syntilor" or "Coloray" and then you will definitely be pleased with the result of your actions.

If we talk about alkyd enamels, then they can be used for painting. However, having the ability to absorb much more than its predecessors, you will have large ones during the acquisition of paint. After all, the consumption of material will increase due to the absorption of moisture by the surface. Alkyd enamels do not need to be covered with a top coat of varnish - this is a significant plus that can smooth out the costs of the paint used.

I generally do not recommend using water-based paint for painting OSB boards. Due to the fact that it absorbs a lot of water, which is contained in the coloring composition, it can swell and deform. Such a process will lead to a complete sweep of damaged OSB boards. Although the class of material that I chose to decorate my room and allows you to use water-based paints I still gave up on them.

Preparing the rough finish and painting it

We independently paint the AXIS in the house

As usual, we need to prepare the surface for painting and in this case we grind the plates with sandpaper or grinder. If there are flaws and irregularities, as well as self-tapping screws with which the OSB was attached, we putty with all known material. When the putty is completely dry, then we clean it - before painting, the surface should be as even as possible. Can be used as an oil-based adhesive.

OSB boards are primed with a water-based varnish. Having spread it 1d10, we cover the material with it and wait for it to dry. You can also buy an adhesive primer, which serves as an insulating layer between the paint and the painted surface. The coloring of OSB itself will not be any problem. For me, it turned out to be nothing at all, because I had repeatedly painted various objects. But if you are wondering how the painting took place for me then:

  1. First of all, with the help of a brush, I painted the entire area of the plate, I did not spare paint on the edges
  2. Then he spread the paint over the villi with a roller.
  3. In one direction and using a roller, I painted the material, first applying the first and not very thick layer
  4. I left the walls to dry and then applied a second coat - do not forget that between these processes there should not be less than 8 hours of run-up
  5. Scrap paint is applied in an arbitrary amount - do as much as necessary to achieve the desired result

We paint OSB with our own hands

If you are thinking about how to paint OSB outside your house, then definitely choose the materials that are used for exterior painting of wood. In this process, it is important to prime the OSB with high quality and paint with high-quality paint.

Adhering to all the nuances and technologies, using only high-quality mixtures, the entire design process will be very simple and fast for you to complete, so do not be afraid to take on new work that you have not dared to do with your own hands before.
