From a gas cylinder with your own. From the pros: do-it-yourself barbecue from a gas cylinder. How to properly open and rinse a propane tank

Today, you can buy a popular barbecue roaster without any problems, but it’s much nicer to show off your homemade original version. Suitable for manufacturing different materials, but the easiest way is to make a barbecue from a gas cylinder, both old, Soviet, and modern.

Preparatory stage

Before starting work on the manufacture of the barbecue, it is necessary to decide on the size of the propane cylinder that will be used for our design. In most cases, a 50-liter container is used for this purpose. Sometimes you can find a 27-liter one. This is also convenient, but the volume of firewood and space for barbecue will be almost 2 times less. You can also find an 80-liter cylinder, the size of which will allow you to cook a large number of meat at the same time.

You need to determine the purpose of your design. And they are different:

  • grill without a lid;
  • barbecue (with lid);
  • smokehouse;
  • grill-smoker.
First you need to decide what the grill will be for.

To make the last two you will need several gas cylinders.

Before using the cylinder, it is important to prepare it correctly, and for this you need to remember safety precautions.

  1. First of all, release the remaining gas through the valve.
  2. Turn the cylinder over with the valve facing down without closing it. Make sure all gas and condensate is released. Use soap suds to check.
  3. Unscrew the valve or cut it down. When making a cut, it is important to periodically cool the cut area.
  4. Fill the bottle with water several times to wash out any remaining condensation.
  5. Dry and clean the interior.

After all these activities have been completed, you can proceed to the next stage.

In this video you will learn how to make a barbecue from a cylinder:

Drawing and marking

During production simple barbecue or a barbecue maker there is no need for exact drawings. A simple sketch will be enough. It is important to clearly mark the cutting lines on the cylinder. If you are a small gourmet, then it will be enough to mark longitudinal lines on one and the other half of the balloon so as to divide it in half lengthwise. And if you prefer to simmer the meat over the coals longer, then the cut for the lid should be smaller and the body larger.

Markings for end cuts must be made at a distance of at least 3 cm from the old welding seams that secure the lid and bottom of the cylinder. And at least one of the markings for the longitudinal lines must coincide with the seam of the cylinder. The hole for the chimney can be drawn and made in the place where the valve was.

Step-by-step instruction

To make a barbecue you will need the following tools:

  • grinder with cutting discs for metal;
  • welding machine with electrodes;
  • electric drill with drills and brush;
  • ruler, marking tool;
  • clamps for fixing parts to be welded;
  • a set of wrenches and plumbing wrenches.

After preparing the tool, we can move on to creative work. Let's take a 50-liter propane cylinder as a starting point.

  1. Using a grinder, following the contour of the future lid, we will make longitudinal and transverse cuts. The tool must be guided evenly and smoothly. Any curvature of the cut lines can further spoil the appearance of our structure.
  2. Using a welding machine, we will cut a hole for the chimney. It should have a diameter slightly smaller than the pipe that will become the chimney.
  3. To avoid deformation of the cylinder from high temperatures, it is advisable to strengthen the internal cavity with several corners along the entire length of the body.
  4. Let's turn the resulting case over with the cavity under the lid facing down. To ensure traction, we will make longitudinal cuts in a checkerboard pattern or drill holes with a diameter of 10-12 mm. Cut cavities can reduce the strength of our barbecue. Therefore, traction is often performed in the form of holes. To improve ventilation of the lower part of our body, cast iron grates can be installed at the bottom.

The body of our kebab maker is ready. Now we can start making other elements of the grill.

We follow the instructions for creating such a barbecue

Lid

The design of the lid is quite simple: it should have a couple of hinges and one or more handles. It is the part of the cylinder that we cut out from the body that will be our lid. Welding the hinges after we cut out the body of the lid will be very inconvenient. You will need an assistant and a complex mechanism for fixing it in its original position. Therefore, when making cuts on the body, we will weld the lid hinges to our structure.

It is important to first make the cut and then weld the hinges over it. At the same moment, you can weld or screw the finished handles of the future lid. It is better to use hinges that can be riveted first and then welded.

When manufacturing the cover, it is necessary to take into account the possibility of fixing it in different positions. This point is especially important when using a kebab maker as a grill. The most reliable way is to use a chain. It is welded to the edge of the lid. To fix it in the desired position, a hook is made on the stand, and the other end of the chain is hooked to it. A corner or other profile is welded between the hinges, which will serve as a stop and will not allow the lid to tip over.

Legs

To make a stand for our barbecue, you need to use a metal profile. There are several options for making legs.

  1. Let's weld on the sides of our body four vertical racks from a rigid profile, for example, a square pipe. We will determine the height of the structure ourselves for ease of use. We will weld square plates to the lower ends of the legs, which will prevent the structure from falling into the ground.
  2. Using metal strips, we will make two half rings. Their inner diameter must correspond to the outer diameter of the housing. We will weld the pillars of our support to the edges of the half-rings and fasten each pair with crossbars made of the same material or corner. We will connect the resulting pairs in the upper and lower parts by welding, using a rigid lightweight profile. We get separate support for our barbecue.

Both of these designs have sufficient rigidity. They differ in that the first option is suitable for those cases when the grill does not move anywhere, and the second will allow our kebab maker to be mobile. Some craftsmen place an axle with wheels under one of the supports. This allows the brazier to be non-separable and mobile at the same time.

Chimney

Most gas cylinder barbecues have a hole for the chimney in the place where the valve was located. In some homemade structures the smoke exhaust pipe is welded to the top of the brazier. Such a grill will have greater traction, which is not always appropriate for a barbecue or smokehouse.

For the manufacture of the chimney, we use steel water pipe and an elbow with a diameter of 70 to 150 mm. First, let's weld the bend to the end part of our body. It is important that it is directed strictly upward, perpendicular to the plane in which it will be installed. Let's weld the pipe to the outlet and check its verticality.

After making all the elements of the barbecue, they need to be painted. It is important that the paint for such a design has heat-resistant properties. The number of layers and the need to use primers must be determined when purchasing paint.

Don't forget to make a chimney

Decoration

A small but functional decoration for our barbecue will be making holes for skewers. For greater convenience, 12-18 mm holes are made under the hinges of the lid. And in the front part of the body - opposite these holes - rectangular or triangular cutouts are made. This allows you to rotate the skewers evenly and cook the meat efficiently.

A more attractive design for the barbecue would be the use of forged elements in the support structure. The stand for the body can be borrowed from an old one sewing machine. This will add originality to the barbecue. One of interesting solutions decoration for smokehouses and barbecues - in the form of a steam locomotive.

Video “BBQ grill from a gas cylinder”

From this video you will learn how to make a reliable barbecue grill from a gas cylinder step by step with your own hands:

Version with smokehouse

If desired, a barbecue from a gas cylinder can be converted into a smokehouse. In this case, the body of our design will be used as a smokehouse. And the firebox will need to be welded in front of the body. To do this, you will need a smaller cylinder. The axis of the firebox must match or be below the bottom of the existing base. To connect the firebox to the smokehouse, you will need to cut identical holes, offset from the center. At the firebox - above the axis, and at the former base of the barbecue - below the axis. At the bottom of the smokehouse body you will need to make a valve to drain the fat. And it is desirable to install a thermometer in the lid.

Now you can start preparing your favorite dishes and enjoy the gastronomic capabilities of your new equipment.

A good and reliable brazier can be made with your own hands, even from the most unusual items household, and one of them is a simple gas cylinder. He can not only become an indispensable assistant in your country house, but it will also save you a lot of money on purchasing an expensive barbecue of the same parameters in the store. And if you try hard and use your imagination, it will become a decoration for your garden plot.

Features of a barbecue made on the basis of a gas cylinder: advantages and disadvantages

Today, barbecues made from gas cylinders are very popular and this is quite understandable. Such devices are quite large and spacious, so you can install a large number of skewers for a large company at once. Their legs are much higher than the store ones. standard products, and this allows a person to stand straight without bending while preparing kebabs. Also, if desired, you can create various interesting shapes from a cylinder using welding, fittings and metal to suit the exterior of your home.

Advantages of a barbecue from a cylinder:

  • Ease of manufacture. Even a non-professional can easily make such a design in a few hours if available detailed instructions and a visual image.
  • Cheap design. If you have a used or unsuitable gas cylinder at your dacha, then the base of the barbecue will be free for you. The most you will have to spend money on is additional structural elements.
  • Thanks to the thick walls of the cylinder, such a grill can withstand even the highest temperatures and high pressure, due to which its service life is significantly increased.
  • In the presence of hinged lid the grill can be left outside without fear of precipitation. A lid is also necessary so that it can be used as a home smokehouse.
  • Functionality. If necessary, using additional elements the design can be improved.
  • Mobility. The grill can be moved from one place to another or transported by car.
  • Ease of use. Since the bottom of such a grill does not burn out thanks to the thick walls, after preparing kebabs or other dishes, the coals do not need to be filled with water. You can just close the lid and that's it.

Disadvantages of the grill:

  • The structure is too large and may not fit into the overall interior of the yard.
  • This barbecue is quite heavy, so one person will not be able to move it without assistance.
  • Only coal can be used as a raw material, since there is very little space for logs in it, or you will have to wait until the firewood is completely burned out, and then you can lay the skewers.

Preparation for manufacturing: drawings and optimal dimensions

Before starting work on making a barbecue, it is necessary to completely release all the gas, which always remains in the cylinder even when it is completely “emptied”.

Since there may be condensation inside the cylinder, you must first open the valve and release the gas completely. This should only be done on outdoors(outdoors) away from potential sources of fire and other factors that could cause sparks and ignite residual gas. In order to make sure that the gas comes out, you can use a soap solution to saturate the outlet on the valve. If the soapy water bubbles strongly, it means gas is escaping.

After you see that the cylinder is empty, you need to turn it over and pour out all the condensate, and then fill it with water to the brim and leave it for two or three days to remove the smell of gas. To fill the water, a regular one is connected to the cylinder. garden hose, and water enters it under high pressure. It will be safe to work with the workpiece from now on.

The first stage of the work is to create a drawing of the future barbecue, which will indicate all the dimensions, elements and design features.

Cylinder dimensions:

  • Height - 98 cm.
  • Diameter - 30 cm.
  • Wall thickness - 0.3 cm.
  • Weight - 22 kg.
  1. Since the diameter of the cylinder is 96 cm, it can be easily divided into 4 parts, starting the marking from the longitudinal seam to ensure uniformity.

    Mark the balloon with chalk

  2. You need to retreat 24 cm from the seam and mark two lines. Then put the balloon horizontally, and make marks for placing the skewers.
  3. It is necessary to retreat approximately 3 cm from the transverse circular seams (lower and upper) and mark the cutting line.

    Marking the gas cylinder for the lid

  4. Then, from the first and second lines, it is necessary to mark 10 cm each in order to then be able to attach the legs exactly parallel to each other.
  5. The borders of the lid will be our first two marked lines from the longitudinal seam (24 cm each).

    Cutting lines for the cover of the future barbecue

  6. If metal rings are welded inside the cylinder, then it is necessary to make a cut so as not to damage them, since in the future they will serve as support for the lid.

Selecting a gas cylinder

In order for the brazier to turn out good, you need to find a suitable balloon. If at your dacha or in a country house there used to be gas stove, which worked from such a cylinder, then you probably have a few left. You can look for a cylinder at scrap metal collection points, where they will sell it to you at the price of scrap, or rummage through the World Wide Web.

Usually use a large cylinder, with a volume of 50 liters. The main thing is that it is not rusty and does not have large holes in the body.

Tools required for work

Before starting work, you need to prepare all the necessary tools and additional elements so as not to be distracted at the most crucial moment by searching for, for example, a hammer, chisel or drill. To work, we need a set of such tools:

  • Welding machine;
  • Angle grinder (Bulgarian);
  • Protective glasses;
  • Gloves;
  • Metal door hinges (3 or 4 pieces);
  • Rivets (one set) and rivet gun;
  • Hammer;
  • Screwdriver;
  • Chisel;
  • Adjustable wrench;
  • Drill and metal drill bit with a diameter of 10–12 mm;
  • Metal pipe for chimney;
  • Pipes or long iron corners for the legs (you can use ready-made mechanisms from old foot sewing machines);
  • Four squares for platforms under the legs - approximately 10x10 cm.

Step-by-step instructions for making it yourself

  1. Sawing. This is the most critical stage, since the appearance of the future barbecue and its performance characteristics depend on its quality. Using a grinder, you need to make cuts strictly along the intended lines. First, you should completely unscrew the valve with an adjustable wrench or cut it off with a grinder, pouring water on it to prevent accidental ignition of gas residues from a spark.
  2. Welding the lid and handles. The lid is best secured using hinges, which are first secured with rivets and then welded to the lid and base of the grill. If the hinges are not welded, then in the future, under the influence of high temperatures, they will simply bounce off and the lid will fall off. On the sides, to move the product, you can weld handles from reinforcement, pre-bent using a blowtorch or welding. If desired, ready-made metal handles can be purchased at the store and then simply bolted into specially drilled holes. It will be convenient for anyone.
  3. Welding the legs. We cut the pipes or corners into four pieces 50–70 cm long and weld them to the marked lines at the bottom of the cylinder at the same distance from each other so that they form a regular rectangle. We also recommend welding square metal plates to the ends of the legs, which will prevent the legs from sinking into soft ground under the own weight of the heavy grill. You can just use two metal profiles, which are also welded at the bottom parallel to two legs at once.
  4. Second version of legs. From a sheet of metal, you need to cut two strips 0.2 cm wide and 0.4 cm long. Then we bend these “ribbons” in the form of an arc along the diameter of the cylinder and weld the legs to their ends. We weld to each pair of legs below cross bar from a profile to create rigidity and strength of the structure.
  5. We weld a corner between two posts (the length should not be longer than the cylinder).
  6. If you use a structure from a sewing machine as legs, then you can even install two wheels on it so that the barbecue can simply be rolled around the yard.
  7. In order to prevent the walls of the cylinder from deforming under the influence of high temperatures, it is necessary to weld two corners with walls 30x30 mm inside it along the entire length. This will also add additional rigidity and reliability to the structure.
  8. Since the combustion process requires constant influx oxygen, about ten or fifteen large holes with a diameter of up to 16 mm must be drilled in the back of the product. They can be made in one row or arranged in a checkerboard pattern. At the same time, we use a grinder to make cuts for installing skewers.
  9. At the end of the cylinder, where the valve used to be, there remains round hole, in which we install the chimney pipe. You can use a regular drainpipe for this.
  10. At the bottom of the brazier we lay several grates made of cast iron of a suitable size, which are usually used in stoves - potbelly stoves or boilers for air supply. This will help create an additional ventilation system during the burning of coals, and red-hot grates will help the cooking process even without the addition of coals.

How to make with a smokehouse

If you try hard and make some effort, then your barbecue can turn into a home smokehouse. The main condition for any smokehouse is complete tightness.

It is made in the same way as a brazier, but only a firebox is added to it, which is made from an iron sheet or a small gas cylinder. To do this, part of the bottom of the grill is cut off and the firebox is welded to it.

The chimney is the main element of the smokehouse. You can make it yourself or buy a special pipe in the store.

It will be possible to start the smoking process after you have completely ignited the brazier and the firebox with firewood so that the smell of methane gas completely disappears and does not soak the meat or fish during smoking.

Choosing the type of paint

To paint a barbecue from a cylinder, it is best to use heat-resistant paints, since Maximum temperature it can reach more than 700 degrees. To do this, carefully read the instructions.

Paints should protect the metal from rust, as well as from temperature changes when water gets on its hot surface.

When heated, the paint should not emit substances harmful to the human body and not enter into chemical reaction with other substances.

Painting stages

  1. Before painting, the surface of the container should be cleaned of old paint using a drill and special metal nozzle or sandpaper.
  2. Then degrease the entire surface with alcohol, acetone or solvent.
  3. Before application, the paint must be mixed well until a uniform consistency is obtained and possible sediments and clots are removed. If the paint is too thick, you can thin it with a small amount of solvent.
  4. You can apply the paint with a brush or roller in several layers until you get a beautiful and smooth surface. Each layer should dry from half an hour to two hours, depending on the type of paint.

When painting a barbecue outdoors, the air temperature should not be below 20 degrees and above 40, since sub-zero temperatures the paint will begin to freeze, and if it is too high, it will dry instantly.

Acrylic heat-resistant paints are the most popular today and are produced in aerosol cans. Thanks to their unique composition, they are considered the safest, quick-drying, effective and durable. They also have anti-corrosion properties.

The paint should not be sprayed near an open flame and a respirator must be worn during work to protect the respiratory system. Brazier made from a black gas cylinder with a stand Brazier made from a cylinder with a chimney, painted with black heat-resistant paint Three-in-one gas cylinder grill with legs on wheels

The nuances of using the resulting product

  • Even if the surface of the grill is covered with anti-corrosion paints, we do not recommend subjecting it to additional tests and leaving it outside in the open air. It is best to place it under a canopy in summer and spring, and put it away in a garage or in an outbuilding in autumn and winter.
  • If, after you have done all the necessary measures to eliminate the smell from the cylinder, it still remains, then you just need to burn the inside of the grill several times and the smell will disappear forever.
  • To avoid sparks flying out of the frypot and causing a fire, operate the product at a safe distance from flammable objects. Also, after the end of the cooking process, you should not pour out the ashes, as it can smolder for about two more days and cause a fire.
  • If necessary, the brazier can be used as a barbecue if you install a regular metal grill from the refrigerator.
  • The grill cover not only protects inner surface products from precipitation, but is also the main part when turning a barbecue into a smokehouse.

The brazier, which is made of a gas cylinder, can also serve as a smokehouse and a barbecue. If meat is simply fried on a conventional standard roaster, then in this case it is also baked due to the special design of the product. Even when using a small amount of coal, the walls of the brazier will warm up well and the meat will be completely fried.

A barbecue made from a cylinder will serve you for many years, provided it is correct operation and with proper care. This is a wonderful multifunctional design that allows you not only to fry kebabs, but also to make wonderful homemade smoked meats. And if you approached the manufacture of such a product seriously and thoroughly, then in the future the brazier will delight you and your family with “your” kebabs and smoked goodies.

The grill is a very popular design, and instead of a simple metal box craftsmen make real works of art on the legs. They often use the most junk material for them - old industrial pipes, fireproof safes, car receivers. Most affordable option– build a barbecue from a gas cylinder, which can be found in your own shed or at the nearest scrap metal collection point. Are there any disadvantages to such a solution, and how can it be implemented?

Pros and cons of using an old propane tank

Choosing a material for a barbecue is very simple. It is better to take a 50-liter cylinder: its diameter is 30 cm and its length is 85 cm, which can be called optimal sizes for the barbecue. Of course, 40-liter containers are also suitable, but they have less coverage, which means their operation will not be as convenient.

Homemade barbecue decor with forged elements

Barbecue from a 50 liter cylinder

The undoubted advantage of a case made from such a base is the quality of the metal. Severe requirements are imposed on cylinders intended for storing gas under pressure, and the thickness of the walls of their body is at least 3 mm. Therefore, for little money you get a grill that differs:

  • durability - thanks to thick steel grade 45, D or 30 HGSA, the structure does not burn out or corrode through and through for 10–15 years;
  • mobility - the grill, even if it is not equipped with wheels, can be placed in any corner of the yard and rotated depending on the direction of the wind;
  • versatility - in such a smoker, under an open or closed lid, you can fry, smoke and bake absolutely any product;
  • ease of use - after cooking, you don’t need to turn on the fire, and then sweep the ashes all over the yard, just turn off the draft and calmly go to the table.

To be fair, it is worth mentioning the shortcomings. So, if you decide to fry meat in winter, you will have to stock up on a larger supply of firewood or coals than in summer, since due to the low heat capacity, the metal quickly cools down, and the fryer becomes much more voracious. At the same time in the manga cylindrical It is quite difficult to achieve uniform heating of the same kebab: in the center it already begins to burn, but at the edges it remains raw.

Heat-resistant paints should be applied in 2–3 layers

Due to the high cost of high-quality heat-resistant paints, your structure will most likely look like in a faded photo - a barbecue made from a gas cylinder from the outside very quickly burns and loses its appearance.

And finally, the last thing: even a cylinder that has been out of service for a long time may contain residues of an explosive substance, and carrying out any work with it without taking precautions is dangerous to health and life!

How to cut a balloon - safety precautions

A mixture of liquid hydrocarbons, collectively known as gasoline, almost always remains in a metal container. If this substance is not removed, the liquid will instantly turn into a gaseous state and the cylinder may explode. In this regard, before you start cutting a gas cylinder for a barbecue, you need to displace the gas, remove gasoline and stop the flow of oxygen to the cutting zone from inside balloon.

You can do it this way:

  1. Using an open-end wrench and a shock load, unscrew the valve, thereby allowing the remaining propane to ventilate.
  2. Fill the container to the top with water (or soapy water) and leave it for several days - during this time the water will have time to dissolve the liquid hydrocarbons.
  3. Drain the liquid, fill the container with water again, close the hole with any seal and cut the tank according to the markings.

An opened cylinder should be stored in a well-ventilated area or outdoors, away from children and sources of fire.

Not everyone is able to unscrew the valve, since it becomes tightly attached to the cylinder over several years. You can try to knock it out with a sledgehammer, but often this does not help. There is a simpler (although it requires patience) way to fill the container with water: unscrew only the tap-axle, under which there is a hole with a diameter of up to 8 mm. Through it, using a dropper, you can pour liquid into the tank, after which you can take up the grinder.

Cutting an old cylinder with a grinder

During the process of cutting the vessel, water will spill out - continue to work as with ordinary metal. It is recommended that all work be carried out in open areas away from residential buildings, since the smell of gasoline is not pleasant and lasts for several days. For the same reason, you should wear a respirator with gas protection. Heat the resulting parts properly over a fire to clean the internal cavities from dirt. After that, start assembling.

Installation of barbecues of simple and complex design

An elementary model is a barbecue made from one half of a cylinder, mounted on a support made of any available material - several bricks, stones, or even just an earthen embankment. The manufacturing time for such a device is minimal, but it is not very convenient to use, and there is nothing to boast about to your friends. Therefore, if you have a minimum of welding skills, you can try to build a grill from a cylinder with your own hands in a more interesting design.

Brazier in a hurry

BBQ roasting pan or grill with lid

You can add functionality to your homemade barbecue if you use the other half of the cylinder as a lid. It would not be a bad idea to improve the air supply to the stove, since the wind, which creates a natural but uneven draft, thereby adds a lot of trouble to the griller.

The work algorithm will look like this:

  1. Mark the gas container, leaving the side walls higher so that the wind does not fan the coals when frying.

  1. Using a grinder or jigsaw, make a horizontal cut on a cylinder prepared in advance according to safety regulations (see above).
  2. Immediately weld two hinges, then cut out the lid completely.
  3. Fill the cylinder with wood chips and burn (you can use blowtorch).
  4. To prevent the metal from leading, weld a 32x32 corner around the perimeter of the cut from the inside - in the future it can serve as a support for the grill and skewers.
  5. For the same purpose, tighten the lid with wire and weld two metal strips on the sides or one in the center.

Strengthening the body and cover

  1. From a profile pipe measuring 15 mm (4 m), any available corner (0.5 m) and a steel strip (1 m), weld a support for a barbecue from a gas cylinder.
  2. To conveniently fix the lid in the open state, weld a limiter between the hinges - a strip of steel, slightly bent away from the grill.

  1. On one side, use an 11 mm drill to drill holes for the skewers, on the other, make cuts to secure the skewers (make sure the holes and cuts are on the same line).
  2. In the lower part of the body, use an 8 mm drill to make holes to create traction.

Stand for cylinder installation

  1. Weld a handle for opening it and transport handles to the lid on the side convenient for you.

  1. Place the grill on the frame, coat all metal elements with a primer and paint them with heat-resistant paint.

If desired, the design can be modified: organize shelves, build a canopy, weld an exhaust pipe to create ideal draft.

For lovers of smoked meats - a grill-smokehouse made of two cylinders

Once you get the hang of using one cylinder, you can make a 2-in-1 roaster, in which you can not only fry, but also smoke any food. To work you will need:

  • 2 cylinders with a volume of 50 and 27 liters;
  • metal corners or reinforcing bars for the frame (legs from an old sewing machine will do);
  • welding machine and electrodes (it is recommended to stock up on a “chameleon” mask);
  • pipe elbow, as well as a piece of pipe with a diameter of 100–150 mm and a height of 1 m.

Using the above technology, remove the remaining propane and gasoline from the tanks. Even before you start making a grill from gas cylinders, clean them of rust and dirt. Cut each container and arrange it like a simple barbecue. The difference in their design is that a container with a smaller volume (it will serve as a gas generator) at the top point of the body has a hole for connecting to a 50-liter cylinder (i.e., a hot smoking chamber).

Schematic diagram smokehouse devices

In addition, at the bottom of the working chamber you need to place a smoke diffuser made from a corner with drilled holes. To regulate draft, the gas generator is equipped with a blower and an exhaust pipe with dampers. To prevent burning, a grate should be placed at the bottom of the smaller cylinder.

Blower device with sliding damper

To implement this design, follow these steps:

  1. At the bottom of the gas generator cylinder, cut a square hole for the blower.
  2. On the other side, arrange a screen with a lock (its implementation is shown in the photo).
  3. Place a smoke-cutting corner on the bottom of the smokehouse, and weld corners for the grate on the sides.
  4. Cut a hole in the top of a large cylinder to fit the exhaust pipe.
  5. Cut out the side segments of both cylinders: the larger one at the bottom, the smaller one at the top (the segments should be the same size - this is important).
  6. Connect both tanks using the cutouts and seal the joint tightly.
  7. Weld the hood and add a damper to it.

After this, all you have to do is place the device on the frame, level it and firmly secure it with a weld seam.

Useful life hacks from experienced professionals

Having tested the constructed devices, their authors share own experience on how to make a barbecue from a gas cylinder with your own hands as efficient as possible. Agree, it would be a sin not to take advantage of advice whose benefits have already been proven in practice:

  • To ensure that heat spreads evenly and there is no leakage, steel strip linings must be welded to the joints of the lid and body.
  • The bottom of the barbecue or smokehouse can be reinforced with a welded structure made of reinforcing rods, and it is important that there is a distance of 14–18 cm from the coals to the meat being cooked.
  • Temperature - important factor when smoking, therefore the working compartments of the smokehouse should be equipped with a thermometer.
  • Fat that gets onto the coals gives an unpleasant bitterness to the taste of the dish - to prevent this, it is recommended to always place a tray under the food.
  • You can buy a grill grate, or you can make it yourself, for example, from two shelves of an old refrigerator, welded crosswise.
  • The chambers must be cleaned regularly using a metal stick, pulling coals from the far chamber into the near compartment, and from it through the ashpit into a bucket.
  • A barbecue made from a gas cylinder, especially a double one, turns out to be heavy, so it is better to mount a pair of wheels in advance.

And finally, many advise immediately, without leaving the cash register, to add another chamber - for cold smoking. To make a compartment with this function, you will need another 50-liter cylinder, just place it not horizontally, but vertically. To construct a solid barbecue from gas cylinders, as in the photo, may not be as simple as it seems at first glance. However, the result is worth it: a purchased model with similar capabilities (often made of thin-walled metal) today costs at least 15,000 rubles, and you will receive it for your own use at the price of metal.

Going out into nature with a large company involves cooking barbecue and other dishes, for this it is enough to find an acceptable place. On a summer cottage or country terrace you can’t do without a barbecue, a tool that allows you to cook delicious kebab or meat yourself. If you create beautiful grill, it will fit into any interior of the site and add uniqueness. Making a brazier is possible with your own hands, using improvised means, such as a gas cylinder or a pipe.

Types of barbecues

There are many ways to cook food over charcoal. Brazier has proven itself on the positive side, has a number of advantages and is divided into several categories.

  1. Portable designs are used when moving frequently. The advantages include low weight and simple design, as well as the availability of ready-made options on the market. The functionality of such braziers is modest; additional devices will be needed to prepare dishes that differ from kebabs.
  2. Portable barbecues have more robust construction, this category includes a barbecue made from a gas cylinder. The design can be moved inside the site or in a car trailer, has better functionality, is quite simply made by hand from improvised materials.
  3. Stationary braziers are installed in the foundation, have a solid structure and a lot of weight. The main features are the design of the structure, which, with a creative approach, can decorate a summer cottage.

In more detail it is worth considering the brazier from the cylinder, because. this device has all the functionality of a stationary one, it is mobile. Thus, a self-made barbecue from a gas cylinder can save the owner financial resources, because store-bought models with similar parameters are not cheap. The design can vary in size, regardless of the cylinder used, which makes it possible to accommodate a large number of dishes for cooking with a large company. The height can be adjusted by welding on the legs, this makes the process of frying kebabs convenient and ergonomic. Also, with the help of improvised tools, it is possible to make decorative look, which will give uniqueness, add beauty to the summer cottage.

Preparation for manufacturing drawings and optimal dimensions

Before cutting the prepared cylinder, you need to remember safety precautions. Sedimentary vapors always remain in gas cylinders, which, when interacting with a spark or welding, can lead to unpleasant consequences.

Making a barbecue from a gas cylinder begins with emptying the container; for this, the main valve is unscrewed and the gas is released. The procedure is carried out with extreme caution, in a well-ventilated area, away from sources of fire or direct sunlight. It is possible to visually verify that the cylinder is empty using soap solution, it is enough to apply it to the outlet nozzle, observe the formation of bubbles. If gas escapes, the soapy water begins to bubble, after which you need to unscrew the valve with a wrench and completely remove it from the cylinder.

After bleeding the gas, it is necessary to turn the gas container over and drain all the condensate. After that, water is supplied under high pressure, which will displace the residual vapors and completely remove the condensate. The water must be drained away from residential premises; the properties of the gas are such that a fire can occur at low concentrations. Compliance with the sequence of all procedures makes the work safe for humans.

To make a barbecue with your own hands, you need to use the drawings. The dimensions are selected in accordance with the volume and shape of the cylinder; with standard equipment, the height is 98 cm, the diameter is 30 cm. The thickness of the walls of the gas container is standard, but may differ from the intended purpose of the cylinder, it is 0.3 cm, the weight of the cylinder is 22 kg.

Cylinder markings

Before making a barbecue from a gas cylinder, you need to mark it according to the necessary parameters. For marking, ordinary chalk is used, the process proceeds as follows:

  • The defined diameter is 96 cm, it is easily divided into equal parts. For uniformity, markings are made along the longitudinal seam.
  • Marks for placing skewers are set in a horizontal position, 24 cm in each direction from the seam.
  • The lid is installed at a distance of 3 cm from the seam.
  • A 10 cm deviation is made from the two resulting lines; this is done for parallel fastening of the legs in the future.
  • The cut lines for the lid act as boundaries, which were drawn at the first stage (24 cm of indentation).
  • If there are internal rings in the cylinder design, it is necessary to carry out the work carefully so as not to damage them. In the future, they will play the role of a lid holder.

Layout and dimensions of the future brazier in the drawing

Work on the manufacture of barbecue does not require special drawings. It is necessary to mark the parameters of the future barbecue based on the size of the balloon. A specific design for a barbecue made from gas cylinders is not required, it all depends on the functionality and size of the device. The height of the cut and cover is regulated by the combustible means used. If ready-made coals are used, it is possible to cut the cylinder in half; if firewood is burning, the lid should be higher so that the pieces do not fall out.

Selecting a gas cylinder

Used for gas grill suitable material, including the balloon. You can find the appropriate cylinder for the barbecue at the dacha if you used propane gas-burner, at scrap metal collection points or private ads. Gas grill It is standardly made from a cylinder with a capacity of 50 liters. The main criteria when choosing is a complete body without rust and oxides, in order to prevent further destruction of the finished product.

Tools needed for the job

For quick work, you need to prepare the appropriate tool. Need a set of tools home handyman, as well as a few additional things:

  • grinder or grinder;
  • welding machine of any type;
  • personal protective equipment, glasses, gloves;
  • metal door hinges in quantities from 3 to 5 pieces;
  • rivet gun, rivets;
  • chisel, hammer;
  • screwdriver, adjustable wrench;
  • drill with a set of drills (a 10-12 mm drill is required);
  • chimney pipes and legs, the latter using materials from unused sewing machines.

Using tools requires certain skills; the material of gas containers is quite thick, not every novice master will be able to competently saw and weld metal.

How to properly open a propane tank

Safe work is achieved through well-executed preparatory work. The washed cylinder must be cut into two halves with a grinder; the process is carried out as close as possible to the weld. Side walls are not dismantled, their purpose is to protect fire from wind and maintain temperature indicators. Support rings Do not saw them; their job is to keep the lid closed.

How to paint

From an aesthetic point of view, it is necessary to paint the balloon. The process is an individual choice; it is not at all necessary to spend time and energy on it. To paint a barbecue from a gas cylinder, you should use high-quality components that do not decompose under the influence of high temperatures, without changing taste qualities food.

Before painting, a layer of primer is applied, which is selected on the market according to the type of paint. Before purchasing, you should study the purpose and instructions; the temperature of the paint should be more than 600 degrees. As a rule, these materials are environmentally friendly, so it is possible to paint the structure not only on the outside.

We make a brazier from a metal cylinder

For country use, an ordinary barbecue is often not enough. It is possible to make a barbecue with your own hands from a gas cylinder. To do this, you need to follow the step-by-step instructions, in this case you will get a beautiful, high-quality product.

  1. The hinges for attaching the lid to the body can be welded before cutting, thereby they are installed evenly, without distortions in relation to the upper part. The cover is fastened to the body with a metal bar.
  2. A limiter must be installed on the back of the grill to prevent the lid from completely lowering. So it will be convenient to close and open the device during use.
  3. The blower holes can be drilled, but it will be much faster to cut them with a grinding tool. Vertical slots are made along the entire length, holes for attaching skewers are drilled with a drill with the required distance.

Barbecue legs can be made independently different ways, it is also possible to use a ready-made stand from the old sewing machine. The frying process in accelerated mode requires a closed lid, and a pipe must be installed to remove smoke. A cylinder barbecue is made by adding corners to the structure in the inner part for attaching mesh or metal rods.

Brazier steam locomotive

The design, called a steam locomotive, combines several devices at once and has rich functionality. The device is used as a grill, barbecue, smokehouse and regular barbecue. Each component has significance and certain functions.

Brazier "Steam Locomotive"

The design of this type of barbecue from a gas cylinder resembles a steam locomotive, if you put effort into appearance. Additional structures allow you to store firewood, food, etc. When decorated, the locomotive is equipped with all sorts of details to increase the functionality of the device. A locomotive grill made from a gas cylinder allows you to simultaneously smoke food, cook vegetables and fry shish kebab, an indispensable device for a large company.

Features of a barbecue made on the basis of a gas cylinder

Self-production makes it possible to select the necessary parameters and functionality of the equipment. Braziers from gas cylinders are popular among owners summer cottages and houses. Installing additional elements makes it possible to cook many products in different ways. The models offered on the market often do not correspond to the client’s wishes; there are no height adjustments or the design is not capacious enough.

Advantages and disadvantages

All devices have a number of positive and negative sides. The grill made from gas cylinder equipment has become famous for its simplicity of design and other qualities:

  • a simple manufacturing method allows not even to an experienced master build a barbecue, having on hand tools, devices, as well as visual aids;
  • the use of improvised means eliminates financial costs, monetary losses entail only the tool and some additional elements;
  • long service life is due to the thick metal in the walls of the cylinder; the manufactured part is not subject to temperature influences or mechanical damage;
  • the hinged lid allows you to cook your favorite dishes outdoors in adverse weather conditions;
  • The mobile design allows you to move the grill on site or in a car; the reliable bottom makes it possible not to fill the coals with water, but simply cover the grill with a lid.

Disadvantages of a brazier from a gas cylinder:

  • the dimensions of the structure may not always allow you to move or install the barbecue in the right place;
  • the weight of the structure is large, so moving without special devices is impossible;
  • Using firewood will delay the cooking process for a long time.

The nuances of using the resulting product

Correct technical operation makes it possible to use the manufactured structure for a long time. During downtime, it is better to remove the structure indoors to avoid exposure to direct sunlight and the formation of corrosion.

Elimination of foreign odors occurs by burning the inside of the grill. The design must be used away from flammable parts, as a spark may jump out during operation. After use, it is recommended to pour out the ash; high-quality raw materials can continue to smolder for up to several days.

Outdoor recreation is always associated with shashlik, grilling and barbecue. Of course, to cook them you need to have a grill. If they are not there, then you can make the device yourself. A gas cylinder is well suited for making a barbecue. This is because its walls are very rough (almost 4 mm) and they are made of high quality metal. For comparison: a steel sheet of the same thickness is softer and easier to deform.

What can be done? gas cylinder is only a container that in capable hands can turn into great barbecue, smokehouse or potbelly stove. At the same time, you can make a brazier from a gas cylinder in different options. So, it can be:

  • design in the form of one half of a propane cylinder sawn to length;
  • a design that has a cover;
  • an option that is a barbecue and at the same time;
  • a design that is both a barbecue and a smokehouse;
  • barbecue in the form of a steam locomotive (they always like to depict it in the photo).

The interesting thing is that anyone can make any such barbecue from a gas cylinder with their own hands. Of course, this article will give everything necessary recommendations And step by step instructions creating the above options. It wouldn't hurt to watch various videos, as well as drawings.

General algorithm of actions

Creating barbecues from a cylinder involves performing very similar actions. The step-by-step instruction, which is often shown in the video, includes the following steps:

  1. Preparing the balloon.
  2. Cutting.
  3. Creating a cover, blower and auxiliary holes.
  4. Installation of legs.
  5. Barbecue structures.
  6. Carrying out additional actions and decoration.

Tools and materials

Before you start creating a homemade barbecue from a cylinder, you need to stock up necessary tools, namely:

  1. Drill.
  2. Angular grinder(Bulgarian).
  3. Welding machine.
  4. Wire brush.

As for materials, the main thing is gas or freon cylinder. It is best to take a container with a volume equal to 50 l. A short cylinder will make it difficult to turn the coals. Do not take a container from a lot of rust because you can’t make a good grill out of it. You will also need to have:

  1. Metal pipe (diameter 80 mm or more). It will make a chimney.
  2. Aluminum rivets.
  3. Bolts with nuts.
  4. Loops.
  5. Lid handle.
  6. Profile pipe measuring 50x50 mm. It is possible with a smaller cross-section.
  7. Fire resistant paint.
  8. Elements resembling parts of a steam locomotive.

Preparing the balloon

The gas cylinder may contain remaining gas, which, when a small spark appears (and it always forms during cutting), explodes. Therefore, you cannot start cutting a cylinder without proper preparation.

Correct opening a gas cylinder under the grill provides priority gas release. To do this, open the valve or, if possible, unscrew it and turn the cylinder over. Next, wait until the gas comes out. To check for the presence of gas, you need to use soap foam. The absence of soap bubbles means that the gas has escaped. This is often noted in various videos.

Next step - sawing off part, into which the valve was screwed or in which there is a tightly fixed valve. A lot of sparks will be generated during this process. You can eliminate their appearance by pouring water over the cut area. It is better if an assistant does this work. Also, water will not allow the metal to heat up.

There may be some residual gas in such a cylinder. To eliminate them completely, into the hole made in the place of the valve pour water. It needs to fill the entire container. To make the job easier, you should use a pressure hose. While pouring water, the container should be shaken. Afterwards, you can drain the liquid. However, it should be remembered that it absorbed not only the remaining gas, but also its smell. But it is stable, and will be felt at the site of pouring for several days. Therefore, if you don’t want to feel it on the territory of your house or cottage, it is better to pour the water somewhere else.

cutting

The features of this process depend on what kind of grill from a gas cylinder the owner decided to make. Some people simply saw the container in half. The cut is made along the cylinder. At the same time, they make sure that longitudinal weld the metal container was located a few centimeters below.

When the cut on one side is completed, you should immediately begin fixing the loops. This is worth doing because the cylinder is still a solid structure and the lid does not move anywhere. Thanks to this, it is very convenient to weld the curtains. Moreover, the likelihood of making mistakes is significantly reduced. This trick is often talked about on video. It also includes the best step-by-step instructions.

To attach the hinges, you must first make holes for rivets. Next, attach the hinges and insert the rivets. If they are aluminum, then it is advisable weld the hinges. The loops should be placed in one direction. Then the cover can be removed. After fixing the loops, continue cutting.

According to various drawings and videos, it is better to cut out the cover. Longitudinal cuts done in the middle of the balloon. Transverse ones should be carried out in places located in 2-3 cm from transverse seams. You need to work so that the cutting lines are smooth. A hole for the blower is cut out at the opposite end of the valve. A hole of 5x5 cm is sufficient.

Cover and ash pan

The hinged lid remains weld the handle, fixing elements and metal strip. It is better to place the handle at one end of the lid, so that it is above the other part of the cylinder. Of course she must endure high temperature, after all the lid will get very hot and give off heat to the handle. A handle placed in one of the corners of the lid will prevent you from burning a person’s hand when opening the barbecue.

Need to limit the amount of lid opening. This is done by attaching chains to its free edges and base. Also, according to some drawings, it is possible from the hinge side weld a metal pin. The lid will rest against it. It must be vertical. Its tilt depends on how much the owner of the dacha wants to open the lid.

There will always be a gap between the lid and the base. To eliminate it, a metal strip is welded to the lid around the entire perimeter. The result of this process is often shown in photographs.

To make a blower, you need to go to the hole made in the lower part of the end with size 5x5 cm. weld square pipe. Its length should not exceed 10 cm. In the middle of its two opposite sides, make two holes into which to insert coarse wire or bolt. A square metal sheet is welded until the last minute. It should block the pipe opening. By turning the bolt, you can change the position of the sheet and control traction.

Legs and chimney

To make lighting a fire and preparing a grill or barbecue convenient, the cylinder must be raised to a certain height. This is done thanks to installation of legs. It is best to make them from a profile pipe. First, two pipes are welded to the lower half of the grill. They should be located along the cut cylinder. Next, four legs are welded to them. For convenient movement around the territory of the dacha or house, you can move to the edges of the legs. attach the wheels. This feature can be seen in various photos.
