How to paint wallpaper for painting. Painting different types of wallpaper - paint without streaks Applying wallpaper for painting

Paintable wallpaper B Lately The popularity of wall wallpaper intended for painting has grown significantly. This is due to the fact that interior designers have begun to increasingly return to this material due to the fact that it has long passed the test of time. It is important not only how to glue, but also how to paint wallpaper for painting.

wallpaper for painting

Wallpaper for painting comes in three types (based on the type of base):

2. interlining

3. fiberglass

Since completely different starting materials are used to produce these types, they are absolutely various materials with its pros and cons. Let’s try to consider all three varieties, so that later it will be easier to decide on the type of wallpaper.

Type one - paper

Finishing materials of this type are well suited for gluing walls with almost any (even not very level) surface. , as a rule, have two layers of great thickness. In addition, they are impregnated with a special composition that repels moisture, thanks to which they are able to maintain water resistance even after many painting cycles.

One of the interesting varieties of the product is wallpaper that can be painted in a textured type. The relief of this material is not given by embossing, but by the presence of ordinary shavings between the surface of the base and the coating. The structure of the surface is determined by the size of the sawdust that makes up the chips.

You can stick this material anywhere. This will help create the feeling of a uniform surface without seams. Since such material, as a rule, does not have a pattern, its edges do not need to be adjusted.

And gluing them is quite simple:

  • Apply glue to the prepared sheet;
  • apply the sheet and press it down with a roller;
  • cut with a knife or spatula;
  • the next sheet is laid end-to-end;
  • Using a sharp knife, cut the application site;
  • painting is done using a roller.

Other types of wallpaper for painting are applied in almost the same way.

Type two - non-woven

The second type of this material for wall decoration is vinyl (or, to put it correctly, non-woven) wallpaper, made using compressed pieces of fiber with a very dense structure. The base, which practically does not wrinkle, is used as the wrong side. Foamed vinyl is sprayed onto it using stencils.

This is done in such a way that the wrong side remains completely smooth, while the outer side can have very different relief. Paintable wallpaper of this type has a large number pros. They can very well cover irregularities, hide cracks in the surface, as well as smooth out and make the surface texture more durable. Due to the fact that these wallpapers are not subject to shrinkage and swelling, they are even easier to paste.

In addition, when gluing this type of wallpaper, the adhesive needs to be applied only to the wall, which can significantly reduce its consumption and simplify the adjustment of one strip to another. Since foam vinyl is used for painting, which can easily be damaged even with an ordinary nail, this wallpaper must be painted after sticking.

Their durability makes it possible to use such wallpaper even in “newly built” houses. This is due to the fact that over time the walls in these houses “settle”, forming cracks and unevenness. Non-woven wallpaper that can be painted does not tear, which allows it to contain cracks.

There is, however, a small nuance: while this material is in a roll, it is capable of tearing and burning, just like any other wallpaper. As soon as you glue and paint them, this property immediately disappears, being replaced by special abrasion resistance and fairly high strength.

Type three - glass wallpaper

This type of material is made using a completely different technology. They contain fiberglass fabrics, for the production of which components such as lime, quartz sand, soda and dolomite are used.

Painted walls are in demand all over the world. They have long replaced many types of finishing. It’s easy to see this; just read the most popular interior design magazines. However, such an operation requires very careful preparation of the surface, which must be perfectly smooth, otherwise the slightest flaws will be visible. For most ordinary residents who are accustomed to doing all the home repairs themselves, performing such actions will be very problematic. But don’t be upset, you can solve the problem by painting the wallpaper. Manufacturers produce several special models: vinyl, non-woven, glass wallpaper. They will help transform your living space and decorate it in accordance with the requirements.

Painting features

Paintable wallpaper is a special model characterized by the absence of a pattern and the presence of relief. The popular material is more expensive than conventional analogues, but has a long service life. This is an ideal option for those who like to change their decor; just repaint the surface in a different tone. Manufacturers produce products mainly in white, and only in rare cases are there colored specimens.

When painting wallpaper, you should follow the rules that allow you to achieve best results. Paint can only be applied to a dry canvas, so after pasting it is necessary to wait a certain period, usually 2 days is enough. Before starting work, it is necessary to protect the floor, ceiling, and windows from accidental ingress of paint. Polyethylene is suitable for these purposes; the joints are covered with masking tape.

The paint is selected depending on the type of wallpaper chosen. For non-woven models, it is recommended to use latex-based products; for vinyl, water-based emulsion is suitable; glass wallpaper can be painted with acrylic and latex coloring compounds. Before application, please read the instructions included with your purchase. Some species must be diluted, while other formulations are used without preparation.

The paint is usually applied in two layers. The first is a primer, the second is a finishing one. There should be an interval of 12 hours between them. During this time, the first layer will dry completely. To ensure that transitions are not visible after painting, the surface must be painted in one pass. For hard-to-reach places, small rollers and brushes are used.

After the base coating has dried, the surface can be decorated with various ornaments and images, then coated with colorless varnish. The process of applying this layer is similar to the previous one, also occurring in two stages. For work, you can use glossy or matte options. This coating is easy to clean from dirt.

Advantages and disadvantages of painting

The method of decorating walls using wallpaper for painting is popular. Despite the higher cost compared to standard models, this option is chosen for many reasons, taking into account all the positive characteristics:

  1. Surface preparation. Unlike conventional painting, wallpapering does not require a perfectly flat surface, which is difficult to obtain.
  2. Crack protection. Wallpaper protects walls from cracks, especially glass wallpaper, which can withstand tensile loads of up to 3 tons per m².
  3. Appearance. Thanks to the wide range of coloring compositions, the presence of relief, the possibility of applying ornaments, images, drawings, this material is suitable for decorating a room in any style.
  4. Soundproofing. Prevents noise from entering an apartment or house.
  5. Easy care. Painted partitions can be easily cleaned of various contaminants using a regular damp sponge.
  6. Easy installation. Anyone can do the gluing and painting with their own hands.
  7. Elimination of defects. Any minor damage, drawings, stains can be easily removed with a brush; there is no need to completely re-glue the canvas.
  8. If desired, you can change the color.

Flaws:

  1. Paint does not protect against serious mechanical damage.
  2. High price compared to traditional models.
  3. Some types of paints attract dust.
  4. There is no option to change the invoice.
  5. Long lead time.

How many times can you repaint

Wallpaper, like other interior items, should be changed periodically. Service life of conventional paper models does not exceed 3 years, photo wallpapers - 5 years. Painted products are the most durable. They do not need to be re-glued; it is enough to periodically update or completely change their color. Experienced finishers recommend doing this at least once every 2-3 years.

Many owners have a question about the number of possible procedures for changing the shade. The answer to this can be found by looking at the packaging, on which the manufacturer usually indicates all the characteristics. This parameter is different for each type. The highest indicator is for glass wallpaper; they can be repainted 15 to 20 times. Other options - from 5 to 15 times.

A lot depends on the quality of the material and paint used. Low-grade products may become unusable by the fifth coloring. Also, a lot depends on the texture and paint. Matte products quickly clog up the relief, while glossy ones emphasize it. It is best to use the formulations on water based.

Particular attention should be paid to the glue that is used for wallpapering. If you choose a cheap option, then even wallpaper that is suitable for repainting, after gaining weight, will simply peel off and slide off the wall.

Types of wallpaper for painting: their advantages and disadvantages

When choosing suitable product its structure, thickness, coating are taken into account. Not all wallpaper can be painted. Manufacturers produce several types of special models, which differ in the material used in their production:

  • non-woven;
  • vinyl;
  • fiberglass.

These products are a fairly durable material that has a layered structure and is characterized by moisture-resistant qualities. Their surface can be smooth or textured, with a pattern or ornament. Initially they are white, there are cream versions, very rarely colored ones, which do not need to be painted.

Vinyl

Vinyl wallpaper intended for painting consists of two main layers. The bottom one is made of non-woven fabric. It serves to glue the material to the wall surface. The top one is made of polyvinyl chloride. Such models will become ideal option for decoration of premises in new buildings that are about to shrink.

Products on paper based not used for painting. The paper will swell and will not hold up.

Standard vinyl wallpapers There are three types: washable, structural, based on foamed PVC, hot stamping. Only models with foam are used for painting. top layer without embossing. Their advantages include:

  • they mask the unevenness of the walls;
  • have good moisture resistance;
  • resistant to fire;
  • treated with a special antifungal coating;
  • They have a wide range of textures and patterns.

The main disadvantage of this material is that vinyl coating is quite fragile, it is easy to scratch and damage. Paint solves this problem only partially.

The products are produced by weaving filamentary glass fibers formed as a result of heating the glass. To give strength, the material is coated special glue based on starch. The result is an environmentally friendly product. All existing fiberglass models can be divided into:

  1. Smooth. Characterized by high density. They are mainly used for ceiling cladding.
  2. Embossed. They have different designs, three-dimensional images, and ornaments. Used for wall decoration.

Finished products differ in density. According to this characteristic, 3 main varieties are distinguished. The first one is of the highest quality, the third one allows for defects. Manufacturers produce white and colored versions. Among the main advantages of wallpaper are:

  • high environmental qualities;
  • tensile density can reach up to 3 tons per m²;
  • long service life;
  • the material is not electrified;
  • easy care;
  • wallpaper can be repainted up to 20 times;
  • they can be used in rooms with high humidity;
  • are not afraid of ultraviolet rays, do not fade;
  • fireproof.

Flaws:

  • high price;
  • when working, it is necessary to use protective equipment, since when cutting the material crumbles;
  • complex dismantling work;
  • Painting requires a large amount of dye.

Non-woven

The product is produced in rolls. There are smooth and textured options, which are made on the basis of non-woven fabric. It consists of chemically modified cellulose fibers pressed together. Due to its characteristics and relatively low cost, the finishing material is in demand. The main advantages of this raw material include:

  • environmentally friendly product;
  • allows you to change the appearance of the interior, the surface can be repainted up to 15 times;
  • easy installation, you can do the work yourself;
  • easy care;
  • allows you to hide small defects, small cracks;
  • is not afraid of shrinkage of buildings;
  • provides good sound insulation.

Flaws:

  • heavy weight;
  • after several repaints, the texture is hidden under a layer of paint, especially under oil paint;
  • thin models can stretch during pasting.

Paint: basic selection rules

Multi-colored mixtures for painting wallpaper will refresh the room at any time. This type of finish is suitable for those who like frequent repairs, when there is no need to remove the base, but you can simply change its shade. Canvas paint can create a sophisticated, sophisticated finish. When choosing a material, it is necessary to take into account the protective functions, features, and decorativeness of each type. A high-quality mixture should not contain chemically active solvents. Each type of wallpaper uses its own paint:

  • Water-based. The base is PVA. Suitable for dry, dark rooms only. The painted surface cannot be washed because the mixture is water soluble;
  • Latex. Used in the kitchen, bathroom due to increased moisture resistance, resistance to abrasion, and sunlight;
  • Acrylic. Universal resin-based composition. Composite components increase the wear resistance of walls. After quick drying, a breathable layer is formed between the wall and the wallpaper.

How to calculate the required amount of paint

First thing to do before you start repair work– prepare necessary tools and calculate paint consumption. The amount of mixture will depend on the area of the area to be painted. It is necessary to measure the height of the ceiling, the width of the area to be painted, subtract the size of openings, windows, and untreated coatings.

Typically, manufacturers indicate on jars with liquid paint consumption taking into account the type of wallpaper. If you need to paint the walls several times, this figure increases by at least one and a half times. Approximately 150-200 g of paint will be needed per square meter. Wallpaper with rough surfaces (glass wallpaper) in this regard is much more economical than paper.

Why do you need to prime and how to choose a primer?

Priming is mandatory only for absorbent fabrics (non-woven fabrics with fiberglass). For other coatings, this procedure remains recommended. Pre-priming will reduce paint consumption and ensure uniform adhesion. After application, the mixture penetrates deep into the base, binds particles of construction dust, and fills all cracks and pores.

Manufacturers building materials They produce wallpaper primers in a wide range. These are universal formulations with special substances suitable for specific surfaces. Acrylic primer is most often used. It dries quickly and does not emit unpleasant odor when applied, has minimum consumption compared to adhesive-based formulations. The only advantage of primers with PVA is their low cost.

Selecting the necessary painting tools

The choice of tools for painting wall paintings depends on the technology used, the size of the area to be finished, and location. The following painting arsenal will simplify the work:

  • Rollers. There are several types. Foam rubber is used for smooth surfaces; fleecy is used for corrugated wallpaper.
  • Brushes. You will need several pieces different sizes. You can get them into any hard-to-reach place, carefully touch up the joint, the line along the baguette.
  • Sponges. Useful for shading some areas and correcting defects during work.
  • Cuvette. A special device for applying paint to a roller and squeezing out the excess. Paint is poured into the recess of the bath, rolled out and soaked on the ribbed surface.

Painting technology

Most manufacturers produce wallpaper that can be painted in light colors to simplify the process of designing, choosing, and combining colors. Mixtures can only be applied to dry surfaces, regardless of the type of material and the expected result. Monotonous wallpaper is suitable for formal, serious rooms. You can simply apply a special strengthening composition that will not affect the color of the base, or completely change the shade and make a new design. Paint application can be carried out using various technologies.

This coloring technique allows you to create a three-dimensional pattern, lighten or darken it against the general background. In addition to aesthetic benefits, highlighting the texture will help adjust the parameters of the room. A pronounced structure of many finishing materials is able to mask the relief of surfaces and make successful accents in certain areas. There are several ways to designate beautiful patterns on wallpaper using paint:

  1. Painting wrong side non-woven wallpaper. After drying and gluing to the wall, the paint shows through on the front side, creating a beautiful background for an expressive design. The pattern can be left naturally light or brought several tones closer to the base with a special roller with a short thief.
  2. Painting the wall under the wallpaper in a bright color. The wallpaper base will soften the surface, thereby highlighting the convex pattern. It can also be painted or left white.
  3. Partial paint removal from freshly painted wallpaper. Use a damp cloth to make slightly noticeable stains on the surface, dimming the brightness of the design. After drying, it can be painted a different color.

Combination of 2 or more colors

A combination of several close or opposite shades in one room is used to highlight zones and to give relevance to a certain style. To create a harmonious contrast, you will need some knowledge of color. It is necessary to combine shades of ceiling and wall surfaces according to certain rules:

  • Place related colors nearby (for example, lilac and gray, blue and mint);
  • Use gradient coloring of wallpaper - create smooth transitions from a bright tone to a pale one and vice versa;
  • You can emphasize the main color with a combination of contrasting shades;
  • Use colors found in nature in large quantities, for example, on opposite walls and ceilings. Blue and beige, green and brown go well together.

The area and location of the painted wallpaper are of great importance. Depending on the goal and design idea, several models of combining shades are used. For zoning, a vertical combination of colors is used, often a gradient. Diagonal, horizontal division is used to visually expand and narrow space.

Do-it-yourself drawing on wallpaper

Create unique interior can be done using drawings. Wallpaper can be painted using various techniques. Any base will do for this. Simple decoration is done with a brush or spray, complex compositions are created with a textured roller and other tools. You can decorate a paper surface with your own hands in the following ways:

  • Using a roller with a convex pattern. The paint application tool consists of two parts - a rubber and a textured spool. When painting on your own, the wall is divided into strips and passed with a roller clearly along the line so that the rhythm of the drawing does not go astray and the pattern does not become smeared.
  • Using a stencil. You can buy a template in a store or make it yourself from cardboard, plastic or film. The stencil is attached to the wall with masking tape and the paint is applied with a foam sponge.
  • By stamping method. You can use special devices with a comfortable handle or improvised means (cork stopper, broom, your own palm). The entire surface of the stamp is evenly coated with paint and pressed against the wallpaper. Using a sponge using the padding method, you can create an abstract design.
  • Application of simple patterns, painting. Even a master unrelated to art can draw rings, squares, and triangles of various sizes on wallpaper. It may be difficult to get a complete picture. To simplify the task, use a projector. The sheet with the drawing is brought to the magnifier and directed at the wall. The picture is outlined with a pencil, the edges are covered with masking tape and painted.

DIY painting technology

The process of painting wallpaper is no different from working with other types of surfaces. In all cases, you will need to prepare the room, choose the right paint, and ensure that you have the necessary tools. Painting the walls is carried out clearly in stages, observing the drying time of the primer layers and the setting period of all materials. To paint wallpaper without streaks and rough color transitions, you must strictly follow the technology.

How long after gluing can I paint?

You can paint the wallpaper only after the glue has completely dried. Manufacturers of paint mixtures and canvases recommend waiting at least 48 hours. If you apply paint ahead of schedule, you can ruin it. decorative finishing. Most likely simple wallpaper will become stained and may even move away from the wall. The movement of the roller will provoke the pulling out of the fibers from the glass wallpaper.

Drying time is affected by many factors. This is the room temperature, humidity, type of paintings, presence of drafts. Recommended conditions for rapid drying are temperature 18-25 ° C, humidity - no more than 70%, closed windows. It is very difficult to notice deviations in such indicators without special devices in a house or apartment. First signs high humidity– foggy windows.

Preparation work for painting wallpaper is an important stage that should not be skipped. The entire decorated surface must be clean without signs of mold or damage by microorganisms. The slightest moisture should be removed with a dry cloth and the wall should be allowed to dry thoroughly. Dust and cobwebs must be swept away with a dry brush or vacuum cleaner.

Some types of wallpaper must be coated with a water-repellent coating before painting. Using a roller or brush, distribute the composition over the entire surface, not forgetting the corners and other hard to reach places. After complete drying, you need to seal with masking tape all possible places where the paint comes into contact with other surfaces - baseboards, ceilings, slopes.

In addition to water-repellent impregnation, a primer must be applied to the wallpaper before painting. This procedure will help reduce the consumption of the paint mixture, strengthen the fibers of the main wall decoration, and minimize the appearance of stains and color unevenness. To apply the material use a brush or roller. The following compositions are used for priming paintings:

  • Latex based. Used to impart strength to heavy bases of mineral origin. The mixtures are quickly and deeply absorbed into the surface, leveling out distorted relief of any size.
  • Reinforced acrylic compounds. They strengthen loose materials well, dry quickly, and are odorless.
  • Special glue for priming. The thick mixture is diluted with water in certain proportions. Apply with a roller, dry and re-treat the surface.

The thickness of the paint layer when first applied depends on the type of wallpaper and the expected result. It is better if it is moderate, without swelling and streaks. Each subsequent coloring will deepen the shade and make it richer. If the paint is applied unevenly, the appearance can be corrected by going over the area again until the mixture begins to thicken. The resulting smudges must be shaded with a dry sponge and repainted.

Reapplication of the second and subsequent layers is possible only after the first has completely dried.

It is better to use a roller to paint wallpaper. A brush will only be needed to apply minor strokes. You need to move any painting tool from top to bottom, from the ceiling to the floor. Thanks to a simple technique, brushstrokes will not be noticeable in clear lighting in the kitchen or in a dark hallway.

The pattern and color of wallpaper is no longer decisive when choosing wall decoration. The main thing is to choose the right roll material that meets all the requirements of the owner of the apartment or house. The wall can be repainted over time in any color, but the texture and convex pattern will be difficult to change. Some coating options are unsuitable for painting due to fragility, difficulty in further care. These include:

  • Fabric canvases, with textile inclusions;
  • Vinyl with paper base;
  • Single-layer paper that cannot be washed;
  • Acrylic with smooth surface;
  • Flat vinyl coverings (foamed, hot embossed);

Interior design ideas in various colors and styles

The color scheme plays an important role when choosing the final appearance of the room. The color of the surfaces attracts the main attention, so it should be in perfect harmony with the overall design of the room. Properly selected shades can distract the eye from unsuccessful accessories, old chandeliers, worn out linoleum.

Cool tones (blue, gray, blue, steel) are suitable for modern interiors. Classic style accepts elaborate accents - the wallpaper on one of the walls can be painted with golden vertical stripes or decorated with symmetrical large patterns.

Smooth ornamentation, large interlaced patterns on wall canvases are characteristic of the Baroque style. Textured painting will revive such a room. The base of the wallpaper can be made light beige, the convex lines brown.

Conclusion

By repainting walls you can liven up the interior of any room. Simple redecorating does not require large financial investments and labor costs. You can create unique patterns on canvases using various techniques and depict your own unique landscape.

There are quite a few options for finishing materials for walls, but wallpaper remains the most popular. Of all their varieties, many consumers prefer paintable wallpaper. Their advantage is the ability to repaint and change the interior several times at the lowest cost.

Bring the bravest ones to life color ideas it is possible to make your own choice the right paint is an important point.

Types of paints for different types of wallpaper

Wallpaper paints can be divided into three types: water-based, acrylic and latex. Each type of wall covering for painting has its own recommendations for choosing paint.

Let's consider the options:

Among the popular manufacturers of interior wallpaper paints are the following:

  • Dulux. Belongs to the expensive segment. The paints are available in a variety of colors, apply well and last a long time.
  • Beckers. Certified coatings differ environmental safety, as well as resistance to environmental factors.

  • Dufa. Russian-made paint. Safe for interior work, not afraid of moisture.

Wallpaper is painted experimentally in the video different colors comparing expensive ones with cheap ones.

Which paint is better: acrylic, water-based or latex?

The choice of paint is individual. Each consumer may have their own preferences depending on the characteristics and cost of paint and varnish products. In the comparative table we indicate the advantages and disadvantages of wallpaper types.

Paint typeAdvantagesFlaws
Acrylic
  • is resistant to moisture and mechanical damage;
  • presented in a wide range of color shades;
  • environmentally friendly;
  • easy to apply and does not smudge;
  • resistant to sunlight, does not fade;
  • has no smell;
  • does not create a film on the wallpaper, which allows it to “breathe”.
  • high price;
  • has only a matte texture;
  • Complete drying time is 24 hours.
Water-based
  • environmentally friendly;
  • initially white, easily tinted to any shade;
  • Available in matte and glossy textures;
  • easy to apply and fits well on the surface of the canvas;
  • dries quickly;
  • has no smell.
  • afraid of moisture;
  • burns out under the influence sun rays.
Latex
  • creates a luxurious coating with a silky texture;
  • is not afraid of moisture, which makes it easy to clean the wallpaper from dirt;
  • durable;
  • has a large selection of color shades;
  • Available in matte and glossy;
  • dries quickly (within 2-4 hours).
  • high cost, but it is due to excellent performance characteristics;
  • It has a smell that is practically unnoticeable after drying.

Painting technology

To apply paint to the wallpaper, use a roller and brushes. First, hard-to-reach places are painted with a brush, such as cracks, areas located near radiators, window slopes, all corners of the room, and doorways. Then they proceed to smoother areas, carefully painting them with a roller. Large areas can be treated with a spray bottle.

Preliminary and thorough mixing of the paint is mandatory so that the color is uniform. For the job, you will also need a paint tray and masking tape, which can be used to limit those areas that should not be painted (ceiling, baseboard, etc.).

The first coat is usually considered a primer because there is a possibility of areas that will be poorly painted. This especially happens with wallpaper with a deep textured pattern. After the first layer has dried, the procedure should be repeated.

The technology of applying paint to wallpaper consists of the following steps:

  1. The wallpaper paste must be completely dry after pasting, i.e. Wallpaper must be dry before painting.
  2. Cover areas that do not need to be painted with masking tape. Using a brush, apply paint to hard-to-reach places and in places where the tape is covered.
  3. Pour some paint into the tray and dip the roller. It is preferable to use with long pile in order to carefully paint over the relief pattern.
  4. It is better to apply paint to wallpaper from the window and in the direction from top to bottom.

The interior design can be thought out in such a way that drawings or color stripes are applied to the wallpaper. It is important to know that you need to paint on the finished base coating, i.e. on the second layer of paint. An option for forming patterns can be a prepared stencil.

Finishing with varnish is allowed, which will give wallpaper and paint additional protection from mechanical damage.

Features of wallpaper painting

Non-woven. They are the most popular wallpaper for painting according to sales statistics. Non-woven wallpaper itself is moisture resistant. If the wallpaper is pasted in a room where you will need to clean it from dirt and dust, then choose latex paint, which is not afraid of wet processing and cleaning agents.

Apply at least two coats with a deep nap roller to achieve a thorough color finish.

Vinyl wallpapers. The principle of applying paint is similar to glass wallpaper: the surface is first primed and two layers of paint are applied. An important condition is not to soak them too much, especially with paper-based options. If the wallpaper is not very embossed, you can get by with one layer of paint.

Paper wallpaper . This wallpaper does not like moisture, so when painting, give preference to a water-based composition. It is recommended to apply it in one layer, repainting only the areas that are not tinted.

Pre-pasted wallpaper can be treated with a special impregnation, this will prevent the paint from running off.

When pasting walls, make sure that no glue residue gets on the wallpaper, otherwise these areas will be difficult to paint.

Glass wallpaper. The type of wallpaper that is considered the most durable can withstand up to 30 repaintings. The paint penetrates deeply into the fibers of the material and adheres well. It is recommended to apply twice, allowing the first layer to dry thoroughly. Before starting work, the wallpaper must be primed. Due to greater absorption of paint, their consumption is much higher than that of paper.

It is important to take the same precautions as when working with glass wool.

  1. Before starting paint work, protect furniture and windows as much as possible. Cover sockets and baseboards with masking tape. Remove the masking tape before the paint is completely dry.
  2. Careful rolling with a roller on newspaper or a special part of the tray will help to avoid the formation of drips on the walls.
  3. It is better to buy wallpaper for painting white or the lightest possible shade.
  4. Matte paint can hide wall imperfections. Large irregularities must be leveled before pasting, while small ones will be hidden by wallpaper and a matte finish.
  5. A wall painted with glossy paint can make a room visually larger and brighter. Not recommended in rooms with a lot of natural light and uneven walls.
  6. When repainting it in a lighter shade, the wallpaper must first be painted white. After drying, you can apply the shade that was chosen.
  7. Pre-priming will reduce paint consumption.

Painted wallpaper in the interior

Most often, wallpaper is used to decorate walls or walls are prepared for painting. But there is an option when you can cover the room with wallpaper and then paint it in the color you want.

What does this finish give? The fact is that if you need to change the color of the room, you won’t have to re-paste the wallpaper; it will be enough to just re-paint the walls.

Sometimes the need to paint wallpaper is caused by the fact that the wall was dirty and then it is enough to tint a section of it.

The wallpaper itself always has a certain texture that will create warm atmosphere wallpaper, not cold painted walls. There are several rules for choosing paint and its color for different rooms.

Preparing tools for painting

Before you start painting wallpaper for painting, you should prepare the necessary tools. For this operation you will need two rollers - a large and a small one, a brush, a paint tray, and some other equipment.

For example, you will need to use masking tape to cover all the elements that you do not want to cover with paint during the painting process. These could be sockets, baseboards, radiators protruding from the wall, and the like.

Rollers are divided into several types. It all depends on the material it is made of – velor, fur or foam rubber.

The choice of roller depends on the painting material and the final effect you want to achieve. A roller with a long pile will deeply paint the surface, while a roller with a short one will paint only the protruding parts of the design.

A roller with a foam attachment provides minimal contact with the wall.

To keep paint trays clean and not take too much time to clean, you can use a bag that fits over the tray itself.

For example, if you need to use several colors in one room, you can simply change the package and paint the next area with a different shade.

Types of paints

Paintable wallpaper can be colored with several types of paint. They differ in price and some characteristics.

Water-dispersion paints are the most popular for painting wallpaper. They have a rich palette and do not contain harmful substances. This paint is used in living rooms.

Acrylic-based latex paint, which is a type of water-dispersion paint, can be used when painting non-woven wallpaper, as well as fiberglass.

This paint can be used in any room, with the exception of the bathtub, that is, a room with high humidity.

Acrylic paint can even be used in a nursery. Since this paint contains no harmful substances.

But it is best if paint with the addition of silver ions is used in children's rooms. They will protect the wallpaper from mold formation. However, one of the disadvantages of this paint is its rather high cost.

Acrylic paint is best used to paint non-woven wallpaper, but can also be used for paper wallpaper, as well as fiberglass. Acrylic paint is odorless, so it can also be used to paint walls in living rooms.

Alkyd paints are intended primarily for painting non-residential rooms. This is due to additives that increase the wear resistance of wallpaper painted with them, and also make it possible to use brighter and more saturated shades compared to the above-mentioned paints.

Painting wallpaper for painting with your own hands: instructions

Knowing all the intricacies of the process of how to paint wallpaper for painting will allow you to create stylish interiors and designs with your own hands without spending a large number of funds for the purchase of materials.

Although such wallpapers cost an order of magnitude more than usual, most people prefer them, since this is the best way to quickly update the interior.

Today we will tell you what types of wallpaper can be painted, how to prepare the surface and materials, and what the procedure is.

For all types of paper wallpaper, it is permissible to use acrylic and latex paint. The principle of applying it yourself is simple - you should paint a dry surface using a special roller.

It is recommended to paint non-woven wallpaper only with latex, that is, water-dispersion paint. In this case, wallpaper is painted from the inside and outside.

It is better to cover vinyl wallpaper with acrylic paint, which is made on the basis of latex. If you bought vinyl wallpaper made on a non-woven base, it is advised to choose a water-based solution for painting.

Fiberglass or fiberglass wallpaper is rightfully recognized as the most durable, since it can withstand any type of paint for a long time and the number of stains required by the application technology.

Water-dispersed materials will be needed for relief and structural wallpaper. It must be applied with a roller a couple of times. The structure on the surface is created with a special structural roller, after which you can observe a beautiful relief.

Preparation of materials

To paint wallpaper yourself, you should prepare the following tools:

  • a roller with a long pile;
  • a ditch for rolling out the roller and squeezing out excess paint;
  • flat brushes with a width of no more than 7 cm;
  • tape with magnetized film.

You also need to choose paint for finishing coating wallpaper It should perform not only a protective, but also a decorative function. Good paint must be resistant to possible mechanical damage and exposure to direct sunlight, be environmentally friendly, have good coverage of the applied layer, and dry completely quickly.

Paints are divided into types according to their chemical composition. Painting solutions are usually divided into the following:

  • acrylic (aka water-based);
  • latex (water-dispersed);
  • polyvinyl acetate.

Very popular acrylic paints. They have a high degree of moisture resistance and abrasion, and a rich palette of colors. You should prefer latex-based paint, which is not only resistant to moisture, but will also create a beautiful matte surface.

When painting, a durable film appears on the wallpaper. Latex-based wallpaper paints come in matte and glossy. Polyvinyl acetate paint is affordable.

All water-dispersion and water-emulsion materials are economical, dry in a short time, adhere well to the surface and have no unpleasant odor.

You cannot use a film intended for long-term protection of wood, since moisture from screed mortars can damage the wood. It is also necessary to cover the window sills and protect the heating radiators.

To quickly paint it yourself, you should remove the baseboards and door frames. It is permissible not to remove them, but to protect them with masking tape. If you are dealing with high-quality paint, it will cover the surface in just one repaint. But to get a great result, it is better to cover the wallpaper in two layers.

Painting process

Many people are interested in how to paint wallpaper for painting. If you want to do this kind of work with your own hands, then remember that everything paints and varnishes must be applied to a dry surface.

Most often, wallpaper for subsequent painting is painted in classic bright hues. Therefore, the choice of color for painting will depend on your preferences. If you need to cover the wallpaper dark colors, you should first apply a neutral paint, followed by a layer of your favorite color.

The entire painting technology is divided into several important stages. First, preparing the paint involves diluting the product and mixing it. The main thing here is to achieve the desired condition and uniformity. Next, using masking tape, glue all the joints of the walls at the junction with the floor and ceiling. They also protect baseboards.

Surface painting is carried out in one approach. Using a brush, cover the corners and joints, then go over the wall with a roller. This is done from top to bottom. Even if painting is carried out in two layers, gaps should not be left. Then the paint will cover the surface without streaks. Most often, two layers of surface coating are used.

After waiting for the first layer to dry, apply the next one.

If water-based paint is chosen for painting, then it will need to be given the desired color. This is done in two ways:

  • Self-cooking. A powder or liquid color is taken and added to the paint gradually. It is best to mix the solution with a whisk or mixer. The more color the color is, the more intense the final shade will be. For the convenience of consumers, manufacturers place a color palette on the packaging. It is also important to choose the right type of roller depending on whether you want a thick or thin layer of paint in the end.
  • Computer tinting. Another way is to color the paint immediately hardware store. You simply select the desired shade, and the computer system itself will add the required amount of pigment and mix the paint.

To create unusual design interior design, many choose to decorate the walls in two or more colors. Experts advise combining similar shades - gray and blue, beige and pink.

You can choose a brighter combination - for contrast, it is recommended to prefer light and bright colors. Gradient coloring has proven itself well - when a smooth transition is made between similar shades.

To define boundaries, it is recommended to use dividers such as wallpaper strips, moldings or borders.

Before choosing a DIY painting method in two or more colors, you should decide how you see the end result. There are many popular options for using paints on wallpaper.

A beautiful result is obtained by alternating horizontal stripes of different or the same width, as well as dividing the wall horizontally into different shades.

You can visually raise ceilings by applying vertical stripes.

There is also painting one wall in a more saturated color compared to other surfaces.

An unusual effect can be obtained if you also cover the ceiling with one shade.

To create cozy interior use modern gradient transitions. This is true on one or adjacent surfaces.

For plain surfaces, it’s perfect to create bright, beautiful frames that will highlight paintings, TVs or watches in the interior.

To give the room depth, it is worth painting the niches with a different color, that is, emphasizing the relief structures.

They also use a method of dividing space into several zones. You can paint one area, for example, the kitchen, in one shade, and the living room in another.

An interesting geometry of a pair or more colors is created on wallpaper painted in the same tone.

An unusual idea for showing creativity would be to create entire drawings that create an imitation of the sea, trees or clouds in the room.

How to paint old wallpaper?

Wallpapering a room is not a very difficult task, but it does take time. We need to remove the old covering, put the wall in order - in general, it will take at least three days, or even a week, but I want to get it done quickly. There will be a way out! It will take much less time to repair if you cover the walls with paint directly on paper. How to paint old wallpaper? This will be discussed in our article.

What can you paint?

The answer to the question whether it is possible to paint wallpaper depends on what exactly the walls are covered with. You can change the color of the walls in this way if on them:

  • paper;
  • interlining;
  • silk plaster.

There are coatings that do not make sense to paint in the usual way:

  • textile panels;
  • glass wallpaper.

In these cases, other technologies are used.

Is it possible to paint wallpaper if it is torn?

A very important question: when exactly does it make sense to paint paper wallpaper? Paper - pretty cheap material, however, it has a number of unpleasant properties:

  • fades;
  • becomes covered with stains that are difficult to wipe off;
  • breaks;
  • if the repair is not done very well, it separates from the walls without your participation.

If the wallpaper holds up well, but has faded, you can paint it. The same is the case when stains appear on the wall - greasy, from a felt-tip pen, etc.

Torn wallpaper can also be covered with paint, but it all depends on how serious the damage is. If these are just scratches, cuts, or small shreds have come off, you can safely go to the store for paint. But if the coating was poorly glued and comes off on its own, it is easier and cheaper to replace it.

What will you need?

Having received a positive answer to the question whether it is possible to paint ordinary wallpaper with paint, think about what you will need for this:

  • the actual paint;
  • priming;
  • masking tape;
  • roller;
  • narrow and wide brushes;
  • several meters of plastic film.

Primer, masking tape, film:

  • The primer will provide better adhesion of the paint to the surface. In addition, paper tends to absorb moisture, and water, in turn, dissolves the glue. So, without a water-repellent primer, all your work will go down the drain - the freshly painted sheets will perfectly separate from the wall.
  • Masking tape is necessary to protect the baseboard and other parts that should not be exposed to drops. You can buy it at any hardware store.
  • Take care not to stain floors or furniture that cannot be removed. They need to be closed plastic film(for example, for greenhouses).

Brushes and rollers

Why do you need brushes of different widths? It’s very simple - you will have to paint over both corners and places near sockets or switches. In a word, you can’t do it with just a wide brush or roller.

You can find several types of rollers with different pile lengths on sale. Which one to choose to paint old wallpaper depends on the quality of the coating on the walls:

  • if they are smooth, the pile should be short;
  • if textured - long.

How to paint paper wallpaper?

It is very important to choose the right paint. The first rule that should be followed is that it must be for interior decoration premises, and not for facades.

Surface quality

Now you can see paints on the shelves that give different types surfaces:

  • glossy;
  • semi-gloss;
  • satin;
  • matte;
  • semi-matte.

Performance characteristics

When choosing a finishing material to paint old wallpaper, you need to focus on its other qualities:

  • Light resistance. If the paint fades badly, you will have to make new repairs pretty soon. So try to choose one that does not change color too quickly when exposed to sunlight.
  • Resistance to mechanical stress. The less sensitive the coating is to mechanical stress, the better. In principle, all interior paints provide a durable surface that is quite difficult to scratch, but still do not forget to clarify this issue with a consultant.
  • Transparency. Please pay Special attention for such characteristics as transparency. The paint that is already covering the walls should not show through the new layer, otherwise you risk getting walls that are not the shade you want.
  • Environmental friendliness. Finishing materials used to decorate the interiors of apartments or houses should not emit harmful substances. It is desirable that they do not react with the environment at all.
  • Moisture resistance. Resistance to moisture is important so that surfaces can be washed without serious consequences.
  • Drying time. The time it takes for it to dry completely determines how quickly you can make the repair.

Types of paints

Paints that can be used to paint paper wallpaper come on different bases:

  • alkyd;
  • one;
  • latex.

Alkyd paints

Alkyd compounds adhere well to paper and form protective film, which allows you to wash walls with any detergents. The undoubted advantages include the fact that the composition always contains antifungal additives and antiseptics.

However, they have several very significant disadvantages that make this paint more suitable for glass wallpaper than for paper wallpaper:

  • the walls do not “breathe”;
  • the texture of the wallpaper is lost;
  • last only about five years;
  • contain toxic substances;
  • are burning.

Water-based and latex-based paints

Is it possible to paint paper wallpaper with water-based paint? It is possible and even necessary if you have decided to take up this activity. In addition to its low price, water emulsion also has many useful properties:

  • does not smell;
  • dries quickly;
  • does not contain harmful substances, and accordingly does not release them when the coating is destroyed;
  • not sensitive to mechanical stress;
  • allows air to pass through;
  • does not react with the environment.

Types of water-based paints

Water-based paints come in two types:

  • latex-based acrylic;
  • water-based acrylic.

Both are suitable for finishing residential premises.

Latex

Latex compounds prevent the paper from getting wet and falling off the walls. You can wash them with any detergent. You can paint both smooth and textured surfaces, and the texture is preserved.

Latex-based acrylic paints are the most popular type of finishing materials. They perfectly protect the paper coating from mechanical stress and excellently retain its relief.

Water

Water-based acrylic paints also have many positive properties:

  • do not smell;
  • dry very quickly;
  • allow air to pass through;
  • does not form smudges during operation.

What to give preference to?

When choosing a particular composition, it is necessary to take into account the type of surface:

  • Water-based acrylic paints are more suitable for non-woven surfaces.
  • For paper ones, it is better to choose latex.

In addition, the choice of such paints in stores is quite wide, and if you wish, you can order any suitable shade, or even make it yourself by taking a white water-based emulsion and the appropriate color. This allows you to get original color solutions.

Preparing the wall

Before you paint regular wallpaper, you need to tidy up the wall. The procedure is quite simple, and perhaps even simpler than preparing for gluing new wallpaper:

  1. First of all, remove all the furniture that can be removed from the room.
  2. Move the one that remains away from the walls and cover it with plastic wrap.
  3. Remove dust from wallpaper using any in a suitable way, it’s best to use a vacuum cleaner, but you can also use a soft cloth.
  4. If possible, get rid of stains - they, of course, will go under the paint, but it is better if the surface is as uniform as possible.
  5. Cover the baseboard with masking tape - you can get by with wide tape, but this is not very convenient.
  6. If pieces of wallpaper have come off the walls somewhere, glue them on or remove them.
  7. If it is not glued very evenly, sand the area with fine sandpaper.

Primer

After the walls are prepared, you need to apply primer. This is a fairly simple procedure, familiar to anyone who has ever done repairs. Compositions may vary.

For painting paper wallpaper, for example, a PVA-based primer is suitable. Water-based paint fits perfectly on it. The most important thing is to let the wall dry completely. In this case, starting work a little later than planned is much more useful than rushing. You need to wait at least a day.

Preparing the paint

Each jar comes with instructions and it is best to read them carefully. But there are a few general considerations to keep in mind:

  1. The paint must be mixed until the mass becomes homogeneous.
  2. It’s best not to add the color yourself, but to ask a consultant at a hardware store to do it.

Apply paint

Well, everything is ready, you can move on to the final stage - directly painting the old wallpaper.

But it is better to stick to this order:

  1. Start painting from the top, with large horizontal strokes going in one direction.
  2. Apply the paint evenly, without gaps, in an even layer.
  3. After the entire surface has been painted, paint the corners and areas adjacent to the baseboard - it is more convenient to do this with a thin brush.
  4. Wait 3-4 hours.
  5. Apply another layer.

  • The great benefit of painting wallpaper is the ability to correct defects during use. If some of the ordinary wallpaper, when it loses its appearance, can be quite difficult to replace with a similar one, then repainting wallpaper does not require much effort;
  • Most paintable wallpaper can be washed, and contact with water and a brush will not in any way affect the structure of the material and the brightness of the shades, and dirt will not linger on such a surface for a long time;
  • stylish and convenient option decoration - a combination of paint and wallpaper– will save your money;
  • Another important advantage of this design is the ability to choose any shade and texture, as well as unlimited decoration possibilities when applying ornaments and patterns.

Paintable wallpaper has a number of useful practical properties: it does not fade in the sun, reacts calmly to physical contact and moisture, and is also extremely easy to stick to any surface. In addition, gluing and painting such materials can be done without additional help; it is enough to select all the necessary materials correctly.

Selection of materials

In search of original methods for painting wallpaper in two colors, many forget about the need to purchase high-quality materials and choose the cheapest ones. But, since it is assumed that wallpaper of this type will be repainted more than once, and such repairs themselves are done on long term, you should choose wallpaper that will not disappoint you during operation.

The most reliable options for this design include the following types of wallpaper:

  • non-woven– have a low cost, quickly glue, and easily respond to wet cleaning. It is advisable to paint with a hard brush, because... most wallpapers of this type have a relief texture;
  • paper wallpaper with relief– environmentally friendly, repel moisture and also have a low price. However, they are extremely sensitive to mechanical contact and are not subject to cleaning processes. Suitable for short-term repairs;
  • fiberglass wallpaper– have a long service life, high strength, and also perfectly withstand impacts of any nature.

Remember! When creating your own design, be sure to maintain harmony. For example, rolls different types should have one tone (preferably white): then you will not have to correct distortions in shades. Choose wallpaper with a textured surface based on the presence of a common element: relief patterns should not contradict each other.

In addition to the materials themselves, decide on paint. Water-based paint, water-based paint, as well as acrylic paints without solvents are suitable.

Some people use environmentally friendly latex dispersion paint, but do not forget that such paint must be diluted with water and applied to walls within 2 hours after unpacking, and on surfaces it will dry for quite a long time (about 3 days).

Advice: To make sure you choose a paint that meets your expectations, first apply it to a small area of the walls. This way you will not only check its quality, but also make sure that the shades are harmoniously combined.

As additional materials use for painting brush or roller(depending on the type of wallpaper), as well as other auxiliary items.

If you want to create an unusual design, use masking tape.

This will allow you to create smooth transitions between shades, as well as bring to life non-standard designs and shapes (the most common are cages, zigzags and waves).

Design selection

You can combine colors in several ways:

  • combine similar tonal shades(for example, neutral colors like beige and pink, gray and blue);
  • apply gradient coloring(using smooth transitions between the same shades of different levels);
  • use a different palette(most often bright and light colors are combined).

In order to hide the boundaries between different colors, use moldings, borders, strips, slats, and wallpaper tape. Calculate in advance required amount paints - and take some in reserve. This will allow you to correct some errors on the walls, and will also save you from having to search for a similar shade if you incorrectly calculate the required amount of paint.

Important! When choosing paint colors, focus on the size of the room: light shades will emphasize the free space, while dark and bright shades will reduce its area.

Painting methods

It's time to figure out the most important question in this type of decoration: how to paint wallpaper in two colors.

Decide in advance what effect you want to achieve: a creative and imaginative interior can be created by painting wallpaper in any form, while strict classics and other restrained styles require smooth boundaries between shades.

We invite you to familiarize yourself with the most common options for using paints on wallpaper.

Method number 1. Horizontal painting. This can be stripes of different widths across the entire surface of the walls or a double division of the surface using different shades.

In the first case, horizontal lines are created in a certain sequence to create a bright and natural design. In order not to create visual overload, it is advisable to decorate only one of the interior walls in this way. The second option expands the space and looks more restrained and comfortable, especially with the use of moldings and other dividers.

Method number 2. Vertical stripes You can draw over the entire surface of the wall with a certain alternation or select only some zones of such a surface (for example, at the junction with adjacent walls). Vertical combinations are useful because they allow you to raise the ceilings in the room.

Method No. 3. Painting one of the walls a brighter or richer color: This design creates accents. This effect attracts attention and also allows you to zone the space. If desired, paint of the same color can be used to decorate the ceiling.

Method number 4. Gradient transitions between adjacent walls or along one wall. Each wall in the room is painted a different color: adjacent walls will be the same or opposite. The main thing is that the shades used differ from each other only in the degree of saturation. This way you can create a soft and cozy atmosphere in any type of interior.

Method No. 5. Frame design: involves creating decorative inserts or frames on a solid, plain surface. To do this, just choose a brighter or darker shade against the background of light wallpaper. Such “frames” or panels can be used for paintings, wall clock, mirrors, TV and other interior items.

When painting wallpaper in the form of small panels of a rectangular or round shape, you can use moldings that will emphasize the classic direction of your design.

Method number 6. Creating an emphasis on relief structures like another one interesting option. For example, niches, ledges, partitions, doorways, arches and columns with wallpaper, as well as other structures are painted a different color.

Such an unusual layout, attracting attention thanks to bright and rich shades, will help you visually transform the shape of the room: some niches and ledges will come closer, others, on the contrary, will move away, and your interior will look more proportional.

Method No. 7. Division of space. This method is implemented if it is necessary to allocate several zones in a room.

For example, the living room can be divided into a hall and a bedroom, and the children's room can be divided into recreation, study and play areas.

This method is useful in studio apartments: the kitchen area is completely painted in one tone, and the living room in another, and the transitions between different shades do not even have to be masked.

Method No. 8. Creating geometry. Surfaces covered with plain wallpaper are decorated by applying paint in certain geometric shapes. These can be solid lines, diamonds, diagonal strokes, waves, zigzags, checkered patterns, circles and other elements.

Depending on the overall style of the interior, you can use different shades and place such patterns in different ways. Moreover, it is not necessary to apply drawings to the entire wall: you can decorate only the upper or lower part of it.

Method number 9. Creation of unusual compositions. One of the advantages of painting wallpaper is the ability to create a pattern of any nature. This can be an imitation of the sea and clouds (which is especially important in a children's room), scenes in the form of trees, skyscrapers and famous landmarks, cartoon characters or arbitrary lines and strokes.

If desired, described by us techniques can be combined. Many photos of painting wallpaper in two colors show that even a combination of several designs can be harmonious.

Of course, such methods will not find their application in all interiors: for example, cramped rooms filled with tall furniture will be difficult to transform with the help of two shades, since such a design simply will not catch the eye. But in such conditions, you can come up with other design options: for example, draw a bright horizontal line under the ceiling.

You can cope with the process of painting wallpaper in two shades even without much experience and preparation. This means that now you can safely go shopping for all necessary materials. With the help of our recommendations, you are sure to create a design that will leave only pleasant impressions.

We paint the wallpaper ourselves - is it possible to paint the wallpaper with paint?

Introduction

There are special wallpapers for painting, which are called paintable wallpaper. In addition, you can paint all types of glass wallpaper, all non-woven wallpaper and some types of paper wallpaper on a non-woven basis. In the article I will tell you about wallpaper for painting, about the paint that is used to paint wallpaper, and about the technology of painting itself.

What wallpaper can be painted

I'll start with simple truths. Special wallpapers are produced for painting, which are called paintable wallpapers. There are two types of wallpaper for painting:

  • Non-woven wallpaper;
  • Glass wallpaper.

I do not recommend painting paper wallpaper. They absorb liquid well, when the paint is too wet, they begin to bubble, the paint does not stick to them well, in general, the costs do not justify the result, and the result does not live up to expectations. Although, if you really need to paint paper wallpaper, you need to first prime it with an oil-based alkyd primer.

Fiberglass wallpaper is not used in apartments, so we will put aside the topic of painting it and concentrate on painting non-woven wallpaper.

Non-woven wallpaper for painting has different patterns, but they are all white. Non-woven wallpapers are distinguished by their ease of adhesive. Non-woven wallpaper is glued from a roll, without preliminary cutting.

When pasting, the glue is applied to the wall, not to the canvas. Wallpaper for painting can be with a pattern that needs to be selected or without a repeating pattern. Wallpaper is only glued end to end. The wallpaper is trimmed locally, on the wall.

Since non-woven wallpaper is very thin, although durable, it is almost transparent. Because of this, the wall under the non-woven wallpaper must be primed with a primer mixed with the paint in which the wallpaper will be painted. This will create a background underneath the wallpaper, which will make the painting process easier.

Note: You don’t have to create a background if the planned wallpaper color is very dark. The dark color will cover up all the extra colors.

Choosing a tool and paint

It is unlikely that you will paint your wallpaper white. But you will have to buy white paint. For painting wallpaper, water-dispersion paints are used, including acrylic and latex paints.

To paint, white paint needs to be tinted, that is, made into the desired color. I won’t recommend tinting the paint yourself. Although this can be done by buying a tube of color and diluting it in white paint to the desired color.

Let me explain why I don’t recommend doing your own tinting. Firstly, it is very difficult to achieve the desired tone with manual tinting.

Secondly, if the first “batch” of paint is not enough for you, you won’t be able to repeat the same color again and will have to repaint everything again.

To avoid manual tinting Just. Any reputable building materials store has a tinting machine. You choose a color on special cards, give the seller a bucket of white paint and receive professionally mixed paint with the exact color match. By the way, in some construction supermarkets this service is free.

Don't forget about the roller. Choosing a roller is also not difficult. A roller with medium pile, made of polyacrylic or polyamide, is suitable. It's easy to recognize them. Spiral colored threads are applied to the coat of these rollers.

We paint the wallpaper ourselves in two layers

Wallpaper is painted in two layers. If the paint has thickened, it can be diluted with water for the first coat of paint. The second coat of paint is applied after the first layer has completely dried (12-14 hours).

The paint is poured into the cuvette. The new roller is well saturated with paint and pre-rolled over cardboard or plywood on the floor. After impregnating the roller, it is dipped into the ditch and wrung out on the grid. The paint should not drip from the roller, otherwise there will be smudges.

When painting, the roller moves continuously vertically, in a herringbone or repeating W shape. That is, each subsequent stripe slightly overlaps the previous stripe of paint.

Painting difficult areas of the wall

Painting difficult sections of the wall is done before painting the area. In hard-to-reach places, wallpaper is painted with a brush with natural bristles or a small roller. At the ceiling or at ceiling plinth The paint border is “closed” with a metal spatula.

Combined painting of walls in two or more colors: 10 design options

When choosing a method of finishing walls, preference is increasingly given to painting. We wrote about the pros and cons of this method in the article “Guide to choosing wall coverings: wallpaper or painting?”

Walls painted in the traditional way will be a suitable backdrop for modern minimalism, and for vintage decor. However, when working with paint, you can get really creative by combining colors and shades.

Some ways of combining paint will bring crazy pop art energy into the interior, while others will help create a harmonious background for a luxurious classic interior.

There is no such freedom with wallpaper: what the designers created is what you have to use. Secondly, the paint can be combined to achieve amazing effects.

With wallpaper it is not always possible to achieve such interesting results.

Combining paint colors is not so easy. You will have to work very carefully.

It is necessary to purchase a good masking tape that will not only protect the surface from paint, but will also be easily removed from it without pulling the finish layer with it.

In addition, painting in two colors will require precision calculations, measurements and markings. You will also need patience, because some dyeing methods may take several days (step-by-step dyeing).

How to paint walls in two, three or four colors? There are several popular combination paint designs. When choosing, you need to take into account the style of the future interior, the features of the room layout, and, of course, personal preferences. So, let's look at the basic techniques for painting walls in several colors. But first, about some important nuances.

There are three possible combinations:

  • close or related colors: for example, two neutrals (black and white, gray and beige) or two cool pastels (blue and mint)
  • “gradient”: tones of the same color of different saturation
  • different colors: for example blue and red, green and orange

Having chosen the last color plan, try to choose shades that are similar in saturation, temperature and “sound”. If, for example, you take not orange, but peach, then instead of grass green it is better to use olive.

2. Designing a border between different colors

The border between two colors is not always perfectly neat and even. But this is not a problem: the joint can be decorated with polyurethane molding, paper border, wooden slats, a plastic strip or, for example, a border made of stone, mosaic and pebbles - they just need to be glued to the joint line using liquid nails or other reliable glue.

3. Tinting with reserve

If you select shades not from a catalog, but guided by your own imagination, order paint tinting with a large margin. If the paint runs out and you have to tint a new portion, a complete match may not be achieved. It is especially important to create a reserve of paint if you are tinting it yourself.

Combined painting of walls in two colors: 10 design options

1. Dividing walls horizontally

The part of the wall from the floor is painted with paint of one color, and above - another. The boundary is usually drawn at about a third of the height from the floor. However, division can be done in another way. For example, exactly in half or with a predominance of the lower part. Sometimes the border runs almost under the ceiling.

Painting walls in two colors: traditional design

Dividing the wall below the midline is the traditional approach. Painting walls like this in two colors will suit for interiors in a variety of styles: classic, art deco, art nouveau, retro, country.

When creating elegant modern interiors, this wall design is also justified. Painting with horizontal division creates an imitation of panels - the same ones that are mounted along the bottom of the wall.

The border between two colors should be decorated with molding or decorative border.

Other options for dividing walls horizontally with offset color boundaries are usually used in children's rooms and in creative modern interiors.

How to paint? Here's one way. First you need to paint the entire wall a lighter shade. After the paint has dried, measure and draw a border line.

Above or below the border, stick masking tape exactly along the drawn line. The tape is glued to the part that will no longer be painted. Next, paint the wall below or above the tape in a second color.

In the first hour after painting, carefully remove the tape.

2. Color inserts

This is another method of painting with imitation panels. First, the wall is painted with paint of one color. After drying, future “panels” are marked. Masking tape is glued along these lines.

Inside, the resulting squares or rectangles are painted over with a second color - usually darker, but a variety of solutions are possible. The tape is removed before the paint dries.

Painted “panels”, as a rule, are framed with moldings, strips, and borders.

This wall decoration is ideal for classic, baroque and glamorous interiors. Wall decor is usually placed inside the “panels”: for example, clocks and sconces.

3. Accent wall

This is a fashionable solution that allows you to make a bold statement in the interior without the risk of oversaturating it. Three walls in the room are painted in one color, usually neutral or quite light. The fourth is painted with a different color - it can be very discreet or very bright, depending on the desired effect.

Only part of the wall can be painted - for example, in the form of a wide vertical stripe. More about creation accent wall read our article.

4. "Gradient"

This is a method of combined painting similar to the previous one, in which the entire surface of the wall has one color, different from the color of the other walls. But in this case, paint is used not of different colors, but of tones of the same color of different saturation. A sort of gradient is created. You can use 4 tones - a separate shade for each of the walls of the room.

5. Continuous horizontal stripe

This is a simple but very effective way to add variety to your wall design. First you need to paint them in one of the colors. After drying, mark two lines - the upper and lower boundaries of the future wide strip. Apply masking tape along these lines (outside the future strip). Now you need to apply the second color of paint inside the markings. Without waiting for it to dry, remove the tape.

This combination of painting walls in two colors is good for a corridor - a horizontal stripe visually reduces its height, making the room seem a little wider and more spacious. Placed inside the strip wall decor- for example, small paintings or photo frames. In a children's room, the stripe can be decorated with stenciled designs.

6. Stripes on the walls

Using paint of two or three tones, you can turn a plain wall into a striped one. It is worth saying that this work is very painstaking, but the result is worth it.

Using two methods at once: dividing horizontally and painting with stripes

It’s easier to apply wide stripes: less fuss with tape, and not so many blots. In addition, wide stripes look softer and more unobtrusive.

Read more about the nuances associated with incorporating stripes into room design in our article “Striped walls in the interior: in the rhythm of color and size.” We wrote about how to make a wall striped in our other article: “Painting walls with stripes.”

Combined striped paint can be used not for all walls, but to create accent pieces. The strip can be either vertical or horizontal.

7. Diamonds on the wall

This is a vintage solution, ideal for decorating a nursery, bedroom or kitchen in a retro style.

No less fuss, and probably even more, than with stripes. But the result is no less interesting, and most importantly - unusual: a wall painted in this way resembles an “old school” knitted vest. Thanks to this, the interior acquires a special warmth and naive charm.

Painting walls with diamonds will force some tinkering. First you need to paint the wall in the lighter of the selected colors. Then, when the paint has dried, mark out future diamonds. Decide what their alternation will be. Note which diamonds will be darker and which will remain light.

Apply masking tape along the border of the diamonds that need to be painted a darker color (outside of the marking line). Paint the surfaces inside the markings and remove the tape. After the paint has completely dried, you can draw solid or dotted lines intersecting the sides of the diamonds.

This will increase the similarity with the famous knitting pattern.

8. Niches, ledges, openings

Combined painting is designed to emphasize the geometry of such structures and place emphasis on them. Any recesses, niches, openings, as well as parts of the walls behind racks and shelves can be painted in a color different from the main color of the walls.

9. Complex shapes

Combined painting of walls allows you to introduce any, even the most bizarre, shapes into the interior. For example, the border of two colors can be arched, wavy, zigzag, etc. The second color can be superimposed on top of the first in large circles, ovals, triangles, etc.

Color lines can follow the shapes of furniture, decor and other interior details. This is an excellent solution for modern interiors and for rooms in a bright pop art style.

They usually paint without using tape. They simply mark the joint line, paint it a little with a roller, then carefully work with a brush, creating a clear, even border between the two colors.

10. Polka Dot Walls

This idea is usually embodied in children's rooms. Although polka dots are also appropriate in living rooms, bedrooms, and kitchens, if we are talking about styles such as country and retro.

Painting walls with polka dots is easy: first you need to paint the walls with a lighter paint, then using a stencil, using a brush or sponge, apply another color or several other colors in the form of randomly or systematically located circles.

Paint the wallpaper in different areas along the wet edge and do not allow the material to dry on individual unfinished areas of the wallpaper. Before you start painting another wall, finish painting the current one. Which brushes and rollers to use - decide for yourself, depending on the type of wallpaper. If the paint on the roller has dried, change the coat on it. Before starting work, soak it in soapy water and then rinse in clean water. Before covering the walls with varnish, you can apply a pattern to them that will emphasize the uniqueness of the interior of the room.
