On preparatory stage a drawing or sketch of a future product is created, where all optimal dimensions. When planning the length and width, please note that the seat per person is calculated as 45x55 cm. And also:

Consider having space for drawers or opening the doors of the bedside table, if any are assumed in the project.

Product assembly

The manufacturing process includes the following steps:

Do-it-yourself furniture upholstery

The technology described above allows you to design an ottoman with an ideal flat surface. And if it is long and wide it will look strictly and neatly, then the small one will look insipid and cheap. Think carriage tie - this is one of the easiest and most profitable options to decorate a "dull" surface.

To create such a sheathing, you will need all the same materials and tools as when constructing a banquette, with the difference that it is better to take a thin fabric so that it is convenient to form folds from it, and you will also need buttons covered with the same fabric.

Such a product looks very original, and making it with your own hands is not difficult.

decoration

The main thing in creating decor is that the end result should be in harmony with the overall picture in the hallway, not be sticky, easily soiled and be made of practical material.

For example, frame a model without a wall and armrests with a chic ruffled cover. They will make a piece of furniture delicate and unusual. At the seams and joints, attach a burlap bow or a stylish decorative ribbon.

Tie the cover with your own hands - then your furniture accessory will become completely copyrighted.

Tie the cover yourself.

If the hallway is made in country or Provence style - age the legs and wooden ends, make the effect of peeling paint or scuffs with silver or bronze stains

What kind of do-it-yourself banquettes, photos of which you can find in our section of articles, we did not do. Today a special case. This banquette is interesting not so much for its style of execution, but for its design and simplicity. At the same time, it is simple in appearance, it has a rather nice design, and everything that we will show in this article is not difficult to do at home. So what do we need.

Materials:

  • legs that can be screwed in, with fasteners;
  • plywood;
  • high foam;
  • fabric or leather for constriction;
  • cotton;
  • staples;

Tools:

  • stapler;
  • scissors;
  • roulette;
  • saw;
  • hammer;
  • large sewing needle;
  • drill;

Step 1: Finishing the Legs

Remember, there used to be such chairs with unscrewing legs. Any such rare pieces will look perfect with our bench. Most likely you will not be able to find such legs in perfect condition, and it will be oh so problematic to bring them into a divine form, but it's worth a try. We clean each leg and paint or apply varnish, stain. We chose a warm cherry stain, cleaned the surface and applied two coats.

Step 2: Plywood and foam

The length and width of the banquette is a purely individual thing, so we will not indicate any sizes here. Place the plywood on top of the foam. If you have the same problem as us - the foam rubber protruded strongly beyond the plywood, then this is not a problem. We cut the foam rubber around the plywood and leave 2-3 cm on each side.

Step 3: Lay out the plywood

Using glue gun, glue the foam rubber which is close to the edges of the plywood in a circle. Decide where you want to place the buttons. Mark with a long ruler and chalk. Using a drill and a wood drill, we make holes in plywood without touching the foam rubber. What to do next with drilled holes at the back of the plywood, see step 5.

Step 4: Cover with leather

Lay out your leather or fabric blank. Measure and fit the dimensions to the body of the banquette (top and sides). On each side you need to add 2-3 cm in reserve.

We cut the workpiece to the measured dimensions and adjust it if necessary.

First, we begin to sew the upper piece of leather, and then we sew the side parts. We will have a special border sewn on each edge, which will add volume and transform our banquette.

Place a layer of cotton over the foam. To create a smooth surface, you need to release up to one and a half centimeters in length on all sides. Secure the skin over the foam/cotton with buttons. Continue sewing on the bottom. Once this is done, you can remove the buttons.

Now you can simply nail the protruding edges with a stapler and staples.

Step 5: Sew on the Buttons

Buttons should also be matched to the color of the fabric or leather. Their number and size depend again only on your taste.

Using a long needle, sew on the buttons. We thread the thread first through the button, and then send it down through the hole in the plywood.

Behind the back, ensure a secure fit with two or three staples (see photo).

To close all the rough work, you just need to sew the fabric from the bottom. Of course, you can skip this step and reduce the cost of creating a banquette accordingly.

First, we fasten to the plywood on the base screws for the legs. You can determine their placement yourself. And then just screw the legs into this base.

Step 6: Finished Bench Photo

Here we have such exquisite beauty. This bench, as you can see, can serve as a comfortable sofa and even as a coffee table can also come in handy. It looks elegant and will serve faithfully for many years. Keep up the good work and you will surely succeed.

Detailed instructions on how to make a soft ottoman.

Banquet- This decorative element furniture that can decorate any room. This multifunctional product can serve as a seating area, as well as a decorative element, a place to store things. IN furniture stores presented a huge range of banquettes, made in various styles and using a variety of materials. It is not at all necessary to go to the store to acquire this piece of furniture. Many craftsmen are quite capable of making a bench with their own hands - at home. To do this, you only need to be able to work with tools, sew and have a good imagination.

What materials will be needed?

Almost anyone can make a bench with their own hands. It is better for a beginner in this business to start working with wood, and not with iron, since it is much easier with such material. wood materials do not require professional skills or significant experience. For the frame you will need wooden material- for example, chipboard or plywood. If the product will stand on legs, you will have to purchase wooden bars. Their size depends on the height at which the master plans to place the bench. Ready-made legs can be bought at the store or unscrewed from an old stool.

It is necessary to fix the structure with the help of furniture corners, self-tapping screws and glue. Foam rubber is used for the filler, and any fabric you like is used for upholstery. But you need to understand that the fabric must be wear-resistant and very durable so that it does not wear out over time. If a carriage screed is planned, then it is better to use not only foam rubber, but also a synthetic winterizer.

Required tools:

The main stages of preparation

You can start work only after creating a drawing of a banquette. Many may think that it is not needed, because the product is simple and does not require many structural details. However, the drawing will be needed to determine the parameters of the product and compare them with the dimensions of the room in which it will be located. When choosing the type of product, it is better to focus on simple version. It is harder and longer to assemble a bench with a back or with a drawer, so for the first time you need to limit yourself to a simple design. Having decided on the model, you need to draw a sketch. It is necessary to mark all the elements and their sizes on it. Wood details are cut out with an electric jigsaw, the irregularities are overwritten sandpaper. Then they can be varnished.

Master Class

To properly approach the matter, a beginner will need step-by-step instruction for the manufacture of such products:

  • You will need to cut the seat out of plywood or chipboard. For the first time, you can choose a round or square shape. A shape with many angles or curls is too difficult for a novice master.
  • If the future product should have legs, then four strips must be attached to the bottom so that they protrude a couple of centimeters beyond the edges of the bench. You need to fasten the legs with the help of furniture corners and self-tapping screws, which are screwed in with a screwdriver.
  • If the product will be based on the sidewalls, then all parts of the structure are cut out in advance. This is necessary in order to pre-plaster them - only then it will be possible to assemble them on pins. Each part must have special holes at the ends.
  • A manual milling cutter will help to make the legs unusual.
  • The softness of the seat should be provided by foam rubber. The necessary shape is cut out of it, and then it is attached to the bottom of the product.
  • It is best to first attach burlap to the bottom, and then glue the foam cushion.
  • For upholstery, you must first make a pattern. The fabric is thrown over ready product and secure it with staples.

The manufacture of parts and their assembly should be carried out in stages, because collecting everything is a very serious job. To avoid errors and not to spoil a piece of furniture, you need to follow some rules. For example, in plywood, it is imperative to make holes for screws. For this, a drill is used. The lid should be the same size as the perimeter of the case, so as not to interfere with the sheathing of the product later. The assembly of the frame begins with the fact that a square is assembled from blanks on a workbench and connected with self-tapping screws. The pre-cut bottom is fixed with self-tapping screws to the frame, after which the structure is painted with stain from the inside.

The body should be two centimeters larger than the base for the bench. The blanks are connected with self-tapping screws and varnished. To mount the lid, the piano hinge is sawn off five centimeters less than one of the sides of the case. This is necessary so that the fabric does not tear. The piano loop is fixed on the edge of the workpiece, and then the box is attached to one of the sidewalls. At this stage of work, the bench should be upside down. Sheathing begins with a lid. For this, a desired shape foam rubber and with the help of paper clips and glue is fixed on the outer surface of the cover. If the banquette does not have a lid, then the foam rubber is attached on top of the product. Then you need to sheathe the side parts with foam rubber.

Unusual ideas

Talented craftsmen have long been using old products to create new pieces of furniture that have either fallen into disrepair or simply lost their relevance. Therefore, it is not at all necessary to create a product from scratch, you can restore an unnecessary coffee table or a stool. The main thing is that there is enough imagination for this. An interesting option creating a banquette - using an old wooden box. To do this, remove the locks and hinges from the box. If there are any irregularities, they need to be sanded. The box itself can be painted in a bright color, and the lid can be covered with leather (previously with foam rubber). Inside the box, you also need to put things in order: sand and paint.

A bench made of old chairs will look original. To do this, take two backs of chairs with rear legs and connect them with two bars. You need to fix the bars with corners and self-tapping screws. Then a seat is made of plywood and sheathed with foam rubber and fabric. Banquet from plastic bottles is this year's trend. To make such a product, you will need to prepare about 40 bottles, cardboard, adhesive tape, glue and foam rubber. The bottles are fastened together with adhesive tape, and then glued to the cut cardboard on both sides: on the lower and upper parts. After that, the structure is pasted over with foam rubber and covered with a cloth. A multifunctional product can be an old shoe rack. To do this, it needs to be sanded and painted. Then, at the top, you need to make a seat from a padding pad, which is first placed in a cover and attached to a shelf.

Decorations

To update old furniture and make a bench out of it, it is not at all necessary to spend a lot of time and effort. In such a product, the main thing is softness and the availability of storage space (drawers, shelves). When the transformation old furniture already finished, it's time to think about decorations. When translating your ideas and fantasies into reality, you should not limit yourself. After all, a banquette made should be pleasing to the eye, and not sadly stand aside. Therefore, it is important to arrange it in such a way that it both catches the eye of guests and harmonizes with the interior.

For the hallway, a product made in classical style. This is especially important if you also need a shoe rack. The purpose of the bench in this case is more for storing shoes than for a comfortable stay on it. At the same time, it should be noticeable and have leather or leatherette lining. In the children's room, such a product can have any style. The main thing is that he reckon with the situation. For a girl, a banquette can be decorated with velvet and voluminous flowers. It will be very interesting if the cover is connected by mom. For a boy, an original product will be in the form soccer ball. Even more interesting if there is a place for storing toys inside.

A bench for the kitchen, with a minimum set of tools and pre-selected materials for the base and upholstery, can easily be made by hand.

Of all the types of upholstered furniture over many decades, the one that has not undergone a cardinal design, in fact, remains a banquette. Yes, this is the same pouffe - a soft stool covered with fabric, stylishly decorating the hallway or other room. It will always be in fashion, as it is not easy stylish accessory, but a practical thing in which you can put, for example, shoes or children's toys. Banquettes in the kitchen are very common: it is convenient and comfortable to sit on them. Almost every furniture manufacturer can offer its own version of a banquette, but sometimes it is not cheap. And if there is a desire to save money, and, importantly, to translate your ideas into a real business, then why not try to make it yourself?

What are banquettes made of and what shape can they be?

Any banquette is a platform based, made mainly from wooden frame. Pouffes, like any upholstered furniture, are made from several types of materials: some serve as a frame, others serve finishing coating banquettes. One of the goals self assembly is to reduce the cost of production. So, if we consider, among others, all materials containing wood, we can distinguish several types:

  • plywood;
  • furniture board.

The cheapest and easiest material to process can be considered plywood or chipboard.

Foam rubber and the fabric itself, for example, velvet, are used for filling and finishing, but in principle, simple cotton will also do. This is where you can prove yourself as a designer and constructor at the same time, choosing not only the color and type of trim, but also the future shape of the seat. It all depends on the purpose of use and the room where the bench will be located. For example, if the banquette is intended for the kitchen, its shape can be elongated, multifaceted or round. For children's room better fit wide platform on a solid stand. And for the hallway, you can choose any option, but it is more practical to use strict proportions.

By design, banquettes are divided into open poufs and options with a drawer.

In our case, we will consider the process of assembling on our own a square plywood bench with a box and covered with velvet fabric over foam rubber. All of the materials listed below are affordable and simple.

What is needed for assembly?

In addition to the material, we also need a tool: a tape measure, a hacksaw, a screwdriver (drill), a hammer, a stationery knife, a stapler and paint brush. All work on cutting material into a frame is best done on a workbench; at worst, a temporary table assembled by yourself will replace it for you. As Supplies you should choose:

  • screws 15 and 50 mm long;
  • piano loop;
  • drill for wood or metal with a diameter of up to 3 mm;
  • staples 15 -25 mm;
  • paint (stain).

You can choose the cheapest plywood for a banquette, so all defects will be hidden under the fabric lining. But you should be careful with the thickness, choose plywood no thinner than 12 mm.

The same with foam rubber: five centimeters will be enough, it is better to spend the remaining money on beautiful and expensive velvet. Yes, and for the base we need a certain number of boards (bars) with a section of 25 x 100 mm.

In order to assemble the banquette on your own, first you need to cut the plywood according to the templates. This needs to be made from cardboard or fiberboard, for the sides and cover (saddle). Based on the purpose of the bench, the dimensions of its dimensions may be different. So, for the kitchen it is desirable to have a height of 50-60 cm, and for the hallway it is low by 40 cm. Based on this parameter, templates for the sidewalls should be made, taking into account the 10 cm stand (platform). After that, you can finally decide on the size of the lid and bottom.

Stages of manufacturing a banquette

  1. Assembly of the frame with internal painting.
  2. Assembling the stand and painting it from the outside.
  3. Mounting the cover on the frame.
  4. Upholstery with foam and fabric.
  5. Stand installation.

All home craftsmen, when they try to make, including banquettes, make a number of mistakes. They are sometimes not so significant, but still worsen the quality of products. It is, first of all, an assembly method. When it comes to plywood, do not forget to drill holes for screws, otherwise the veneer layers will split, especially at the edges of the blanks. Another gap in knowledge is the lack of understanding of assembly tolerances and fabric sheathing.

The lid must be fitted strictly to the size of the perimeter of the body, otherwise it will interfere with the lining in line with the walls of the banquette. During upholstery, all fabric cut to size should be tucked in by a centimeter, leading to the opposite edges of the blanks.

Frame assembly and stand

Assemble a square of blanks on a workbench, sequentially connecting them to self-tapping screws, three pieces for each joint. Holding the blanks with your hands, try to immediately collect them flush at the edges. Cut to size bottom external dimension bottom of the case, without it the banquet will be a little functional piece of furniture. Using the same self-tapping screws, fix the bottom on the body, then paint the inside of the box with the prepared stain and lay it upside down to dry.

The base for the pouffe should be smaller in size, by about 2-3 cm. Saw the blanks and connect them with self-tapping screws, after which you should also paint and dry for a while.

Cover mounting

Before hanging the lid, saw off a piano hinge about 5 cm smaller than one of the sides of the case. When mounted on the cover, its edges should not reach the outer walls by 2-3 cm, so as not to tear the fabric and stick out sharp corners. First, take the lid and, having distributed the distance to the edges, fix the piano loop on one of the edges of the workpiece. After, holding the box with your hands and accurately trying on the sides of the cover, screw it to either side on the end of the sidewall. In this case, the bench should be bottom to bottom.

Foam and fabric upholstery

The sides of the box can be left without filling with foam rubber, which is not desirable, but the roof must be sheathed with it. If you use foam rubber for the sides, then it can be easily fixed on the sides of the box with adhesive tape. The main thing is that it is equal to the height of the body. To sheath the box, a piece of fabric is taken that comes out with its edges along the height of the box by 2 cm. In any corner, evenly with our hands, we apply it to the body and use a stapler to hammer the tucked fabric. We wrap the box and tuck it again, and then we clog the stapler with staples also at the corner.

Having cut the foam rubber exactly to the size of the lid, put it on any quick-drying glue, and, in accordance with the resulting height, cut the fabric, taking into account the twist on the back side of the roof by 3-4 cm. Alternately, starting from one edge of the lid, wrap the foam rubber and fix it on the back sides of the plywood roof with staples.

A wide range of materials are used for the upholstery of the banquette. Consider the most common:

  • Fabric (it can be chinille, cotton, linen, silk or flock). The fabric is easy to clean, its range allows you to choose materials and shades that suit your interior. The price depends on the type of fabric. Usually the price for natural materials higher than synthetics.
  • Skin. This is a more expensive and noble material. If you choose a bench with leather upholstery, then the interior must match. This material looks best with expensive woods. As for care, the skin is more capricious than the fabric. But caring for her will not be a big difficulty and will not make a hole in the family budget, so you should not be afraid.
  • Faux leather. This material is more budget. Leatherette is easy to clean, but has a shorter lifespan than genuine leather. If the banquette is well made, then in the room it will look as elegant as the skin.
  • We make a banquette on our own

    Making a banquette in the hallway with your own hands consists of several steps. Each of the stages is quite simple, but they all require care and accuracy.

    Necessary materials and tools

    Banquettes with forged frames and forging will require certain skills and professionalism. In this article, we will consider the possibility of making a wooden bench with our own hands.

    Necessary materials:

  • A timber beam measuring 30 by 40 or 30 by 50 mm;
  • Legs can be taken from an old stool or coffee table;
  • Glue, self-tapping screws, pins and furniture corners;
  • Plywood or MDF sheets.
  • The upholstery consists of a cover and a filler. Foam rubber usually acts as a filler. It keeps its shape well. If you want to make the seat softer, then you can take a synthetic winterizer.

    For manufacturing, you will also need the following tools:

    • drill, jigsaw and screwdriver;
    • hammer;
    • screwdrivers;
    • needles and threads;
    • construction stapler;
    • level;
    • sandpaper;
    • paint, varnish and stain (optional).

    Preparatory stage

    Before proceeding with the manufacture of a bench, a drawing should be made. It is necessary to accurately determine the size of the room and the future product.

    First you need to decide on the model. It will be difficult to implement a bench with a back in the absence of experience, so it is better to choose a simple one, wooden model without a back. Further, based on the selected model, you need to calculate the dimensions of the remaining parts.

    Advice ! If you plan a lot of details, then you should make a pattern, and only then proceed to cutting plywood.

    Details need to be cut with a jigsaw and process their edges with sandpaper.

    Product assembly

    Don't do everything the right details in one day, especially if this is your first furniture making experience. It may turn out that you make a lot of mistakes, and something will have to be redone.

    First of all, it is worth making a seat and starting from its size. Other parts are much easier to fit under the seat.

    Then you need to make the legs. As mentioned above, you can take ready-made ones, but if you want to make new ones, especially for a banquette, then you need to take the beams, process them with a manual cutter, and attach them to the seat with screws. The workpiece must be covered with stain or paint.

    Attention ! Hand mill will make the legs more stylish and neat. This tool is easier and cheaper milling machine. It will allow you to make the legs round or with non-standard protrusions.

    If the future product will be based on the sidewalls, then in this case all the parts are prepared immediately, cut out, polished, and then simply put together. You need to assemble on pins, for them, special holes are made at the ends of the blanks.

    After the work done, you can start upholstery. Starting day, you need to cut a piece of foam rubber right size. And then fix the foam rubber with glue and construction stapler to the base. It is desirable to lay burlap or any coarse material under the foam rubber.

    Then, from the selected fabric, you need to cut out a piece of the required size with an allowance. After cutting, the fabric must be carefully tucked up and secured with a construction stapler.

    How to sew a cover yourself

    If the upholstery on the old bench is worn out, there is no need to rush to throw it away. It can always be updated. To do this, you do not need to change the upholstery, you can simply sew a cover that will please the eye and complement the interior. Usually the cover is made for models without backs. You can sew a beautiful cover in several stages:

  • On the fabric you need to designate a rectangle or square according to the size of the seat.
  • The fabric must be folded with a scarf and measured 10 cm from each side.
  • At the resulting "box" you need to cut the corners and process the edges.
  • Then you need to take a piece of fabric, which in width will be equal to the height of the banquette itself, and sew it with a pipe. The length will depend on the number of frills planned. The frill is swept to the seat and draped. You need to do this from the inside out.
  • After that, you need to sew a seam with an elastic band or sheathe it with tape.
  • The edge of the cover can also be sheathed with tape, or you can simply stitch it. A decorative cord can be attached over the seam.
  • Conclusion

    Banquets can be completely different. When choosing materials and creating a drawing, you should not only pay attention to materials, dimensions and the design itself, but also to how a piece of furniture will fit into the interior. Before you start making a bench with your own hands, you should soberly assess your strengths. If you are new to furniture making, then perhaps you should not take on complex structures with a back, drawers and shelves, and you should not buy very expensive materials. There is a chance that the first pancake will turn out to be lumpy, and you will regret the money spent.

    A bench can also be made from old and even broken furniture. For example, in the following video you will learn how to make a bench from an old, broken stool.
