UPS for gas boilers. Choosing a UPS for a gas boiler: how to find a high-quality uninterruptible power supply? What you need to pay special attention to when choosing a UPS for a boiler

We will probably remember the winter of 2005-06 for a long time. What can we say about Russia, if Western Europe was freezing and lacking electricity.

It was due to abnormal weather conditions that the demand for sources of uninterruptible power supply to ensure the operation of boilers country houses possessions in an “emergency” situation. And it happened almost everywhere. It should be noted that during this period, the demand for this equipment, i.e. on uninterruptible power supplies for boilers significantly exceeded the offer.

Uninterruptible power supply or generator?

The electrical part of gas, diesel, solid fuel boilers consumes, as a rule, insignificant electrical power. To provide electric power to these boilers during the absence of voltage in the external network, it is much more cost-effective to use appropriate uninterruptible power supplies, rather than gasoline or diesel generators.

Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS/UPS) have a number of advantages:

  • longer time between failures;
  • no need for periodic maintenance and replacement Supplies(except battery);
  • noiselessness of work;
  • no operating costs;
  • ease of installation and connection.

For quality power supply circulation pumps and the electronic unit of the boiler from the UPS, a number of conditions are required:

  • sinusoidal voltage;
  • compliance with standard voltage and frequency values;
  • wide input voltage range, in which the uninterruptible power supply does not switch to battery operation;
  • filtering properties;
  • protection against deep discharge of batteries;
  • in case of overload of the UPS (or output of its failure), the presence of the emergency mode "By-pass".

In addition, it is necessary to ensure that the equipment works offline enough long time. All these criteria are met by uninterruptible power supplies.

Important to know when choosing a UPS for gas boilers

  1. It is highly desirable that the UPS be made using “on-line” technology (online), otherwise known as “double conversion”. Its advantage also lies in the fact that it "gives out a pure sine" at the output not only in battery mode, but also when operating from the input mains voltage.
  2. To maintain in the "emergency" mode of operation for a long time (hours or tens of hours), as a rule, the device is selected in the LT (Long Time) configuration. It differs from the standard device in that it does not contain internal batteries and is equipped with an intelligent high-power charger. Batteries of the required capacity (calculated for a long operating time) are connected to the UPS.
  3. The choice of battery capacity, measured in Ampere-hours (Ah), is made depending on the desired time to maintain the power supply of your cottage in the "emergency" mode and load power.

Experience shows that the power of domestic boilers, as a rule, lies in the range of 50-300 watts, which corresponds to about 70-400 volt-amps.

Modern gas heating boilers are "smart" devices, the sophisticated electronics of which allow you to maintain high efficiency in the house comfortable temperature. The presence of a control panel and circulation pumps makes such systems highly dependent on quality and uninterrupted power supply.

The uninterruptible power supply for the heating system of a private house must satisfy a number of mandatory requirements, which will allow your boiler and circulation pumps to work correctly, reliably and without errors:

  1. Availability pure sine wave output, which is critical for pumps. This means that conventional computer UPSs (APC Back-UPS, IPPON Back Office, etc.) with a square wave/approximated sine wave output are not suitable.
  2. Availability through neutral for the correct operation of the flame sensor of phase-dependent boilers. In this regard, many European brands are not suitable.
  3. Availability powerful charger(from 5A), which allows you to connect external batteries necessary to ensure long-term battery life in the event of a power outage.
  4. power reserve the device has at least 40% in relation to the amount electrical capacities automation of heating and circulation pumps.

There are three types of heating boiler solutions on our market:

  1. Off-line sources without voltage regulator. Most popular: Teplocom, .
  2. Uninterruptible type line-interactive with primitive relay stabilization. Popular brands , .
  3. on-line UPS with high precision double conversion stabilization. Brands: , (Inelt).

How to choose the right type of UPS for a heating boiler?

  • If you have : firstly, a simple wall-mounted boiler without complex automation; secondly, the voltage in the village is stable(does not jump sharply, there are no “blinks” and subsidence); Thirdly, Requires battery life up to 10-12 hours, then in order to save the budget, you can pay attention to the first or second type of UPS. [ Important!In the event of sudden power surges, output noise and distortion in the operation of the built-in relay stabilizer can cause an error and even damage the sensitive electronics of your boiler.] Please note that for the first type off-line, it is necessary to buy a separate electronic / inverter voltage stabilizer. Examples of ready-made solutions:

Budget kits for wall-mounted boilers

Price: 13 700 rub. Price: 20 500 rub. Price: 26 000 rub.
  • In all other cases, we recommend using on-line uninterruptible power supplies.(See detailed), which save the owners of boilers from all possible problems with power supply.

Uninterruptibles of this class provide:

  1. Instant voltage stabilization with an accuracy of 1% (line-interactive has 10 times lower accuracy, switching windings with a relay can cause an error in automation)
  2. Protection against mains interference (EMI) and power surges
  3. Uninterrupted power supply with switching to battery operation in 0 sec. (line-interactive switches in 20ms with noisy output waveform)
  4. Ideal "sine" output with distortion (THD) less than 3%
  5. The presence of a through neutral for the correct operation of phase-dependent boilers
  6. Output power 800W (1000VA) and above

In anticipation of a new heating season many owners of country houses are thinking about the question of what will happen to the heating system in the event of a power outage. Regardless of what caused the blackout - a wire break, a substation overload or a large-scale accident, remember the main rule. modern system heating requires a reliable source of uninterruptible power supply, which, if necessary, can replace the main network.

So, from this article you will learn:

  • Why does the boiler house need a backup source of electricity.
  • How to choose an uninterruptible power supply (UPS/UPS).
  • What are the nuances to consider when choosing a battery for a UPS.

Features of choosing a UPS for a boiler room

Boiler room of modern country house is a complex energy-dependent engineering system. For the smooth operation of the heating system, permanent provision electric power of the boiler and pumps that circulate the coolant through the pipes. In the event of a power outage, the circulation pumps stop working, the boiler control unit turns off, and the heating system stops.

With a long power outage in winter, this, in addition to a significant decrease in the level of comfort in country house, may cause the heating system to freeze or cause emergency. For example, if the heart of the heating system is non-volatile solid fuel boiler, then in the event of a power outage, the circulation pumps will immediately turn off.

A wood or coal boiler, by virtue of its design, will continue to work and will heat the coolant, which is no longer pumped through the pipes of the heating system. If the circulation of fluid in the heating system is by force(the coolant is pumped by a pump), and a heating system with natural circulation (gravity type) is not installed, the coolant may boil or, in the worst case, simply explode.

You can avoid such troubles if you install a backup power supply system for heating equipment.

Reliable and uninterrupted operation of modern heating boilers, such as gas, pellet or diesel, as well as the entire heating system, is completely dependent on the availability of electricity in the house. Electricity feeds the most important nodes boiler - circulation pump and block electronic control. In the event of a power outage, the heat supply is interrupted.

At first glance, it seems that installing a backup power system for a boiler room is not very difficult. For example, it is enough to connect an inexpensive “computer” uninterruptible power supply to the boiler or make a system based on ordinary car batteries. This opinion is erroneous, because. For the operation of the boiler from the UPS, it is necessary that it meets certain requirements.

Choice right source uninterruptible power supply

As mentioned above, a modern boiler is complex equipment equipped with a microprocessor control unit that is sensitive to power surges and, most importantly, to the quality of electricity.

Sergey Larin-Chizh

Depending on the design, uninterruptible power supplies provide output voltage of two forms - pure sine and an approximation of a sine wave. Moreover, the last form of the sinusoid - the so-called. meander (rectangular output signal) are produced by inexpensive uninterruptible power supplies, designed, for example, for use with simple equipment not sensitive to the shape of the input voltage.

UPS of this type, in addition to the small capacity of the built-in battery, which is unable to ensure long-term operation of boiler equipment, is completely unsuitable for powering microprocessor boards of boilers, because. the control unit perceives the meander (or quasi-sinusoid) as an error. The circulation pump, if it starts, will work intermittently and increase noise , its resource will also be significantly reduced. In addition, expensive equipment can simply fail.

For the operation of the boiler, circulation pumps, in general , all devices equipped asynchronous motors, submersible, drainage and sewage pumps the UPS must provide only a pure sine wave output. A pure sine wave is also required for some household appliances that can be connected to a UPS, such as a refrigerator, a video surveillance system.

And this is just one of several important nuances, which must be considered when choosing a UPS for a boiler room. In addition to the output waveform, the ability of the UPS to withstand high inrush currents must be considered. This is due to the fact that many devices, for example, submersible pumps, which in themselves are already quite powerful consumers of electricity, at the start they increase consumption by 2-3 times their rated power.

Hence: one of the most important characteristics is the ability of the UPS to withstand a 2/3-fold excess of power from the nominal value for 15-30 seconds. But in general, always select a UPS for a boiler room with the necessary margin both in terms of UPS power and battery capacity, based on the calculation of a sufficient supply of electricity to all consumers.

Go ahead. The principle of operation of the backup power can be described simple algorithm. When connected to the mains, the battery or batteries (if several batteries are used) are charged through the charger built into the UPS. At the same time, through the UPS, electricity is supplied to consumers - a boiler, circulation pumps, etc. When the battery is fully charged, the charger automatically turns off, and the system is powered directly from the mains, through the UPS in the so-called. regular mode.

In the event of a power outage, the uninterruptible power supply will provide electricity from the battery (by converting it from DC to AC 220 V, 50 Hz) to the boiler and other connected equipment. The power supply will be carried out until the power supply to the house is restored, or until the batteries are discharged.

Sergey Larin-Chizh

Unlike a gasoline or diesel generator, UPSs can be installed anywhere, require virtually no maintenance other than battery replacement every few years, instantly restore power, and are silent in operation.

If, in addition to the boiler, it is necessary to power the pump of a local treatment plant, a water supply pump, etc., the UPS capacity is calculated based on the total electricity consumption of all consumers.

Also, when choosing an uninterruptible power supply for a boiler, you need to decide on a number of key requirements that apply to this equipment. According to the principle of operation, all UPSs are divided into three large groups.

  1. Off-line (off-line) UPS.
  2. Line-interactive devices.
  3. On-line (on-line) models continuous action.

Sergey Larin-Chizh

To do conscious choice, you need to understand the differences between these UPSs.

Off-line uninterruptibles do not have a built-in stabilizer, and in the settings of the device the range of permissible mains voltage is fixed, for example, from 180 to 250 V. If the voltage drops or surges outside the input voltage range (and this often happens in suburban settlements), the device will regard this as a signal to switch the power battery boiler. When the voltage level returns to the set ratings, the uninterruptible power supply will switch back to power from the main network. Those. at any jumps, unnecessarily frequent switching of the UPS: mains / batteries will occur.

In addition to the lack of protection of the connected equipment from voltage surges, the operation of an uninterruptible power supply in this mode will lead to a frequent charge / discharge cycle of the batteries, which will reduce their service life. In addition, when choosing a UPS of this type, you will additionally have to purchase a stabilizing device to protect the equipment.

Sergey Larin-Chizh

Unlike off-line, line-interactive devices, although they have limit values for permissible voltage, are additionally equipped with a voltage stabilizer that protects equipment from power surges. In addition to simply supplying voltage, this type of UPS allows you to adjust it within certain limits (about 20%), but usually this adjustment is stepped.

Online uninterruptibles, or continuous UPS, are, at first glance, the most optimal equipment suitable for use in conjunction with a heating boiler, demanding on voltage quality and frequency. UPS of this type, due to its design features, "pull" the voltage to the quality we need, supplying 220 V 50 Hz to the consumer.

In such an uninterruptible power supply, an inverter is installed, which operates according to the double conversion scheme of the incoming current. Those. at first alternating current is converted into a direct current, then it is converted again into an alternating current of stable quality necessary for the operation of the equipment. With all the advantages of online topology, there is one significant disadvantage that you should definitely pay attention to.

Due to the fact that the system works on the principle of double conversion, the connected batteries are used all the time. This significantly reduces the battery life compared to the line-interactive topology, and the batteries, in turn, are quite an expensive pleasure, at low powers, blocking the cost of the UPS itself.

Sergey Larin-Chizh

For the full operation of an uninterruptible power supply system, for a boiler room, a linear-interactive device will be more than enough, since in terms of the sum of consumer characteristics, this seems to be the best choice.

Important point: usually, for a UPS of initial power with external batteries, the supply voltage is 12 V or 24 V and then ascending - 36, 48 V, depending on the power, i.e. at 24 V, at least 2 batteries are required, which is not always economically feasible. Therefore, choosing a high-quality uninterruptible power supply, we look in its technical characteristics to see if it can work on necessary minimum, i.e. from the 1st 12 V battery.

The weight of the equipment can also serve indirect sign its declared characteristics, for example, a pure sine wave is achieved by equalizing the signal with a powerful transformer. That is, due to the design features of a 2.5 kW UPS, it cannot weigh, for example, 10 kg. The weight of a system of similar power without batteries will be at least 30 kg.

We also pay attention to the transition speed of the battery/network switching modes (the switching time should not exceed 6 m/s - 10 m/s), maximum amount batteries that can be connected to the UPS. The last parameter is important if in the future it is planned to expand the capabilities of the system and, by increasing the capacity of the batteries, connect additional consumers to the backup power system or increase the battery life.

Choosing a battery for an uninterruptible power supply

The cost of batteries can be over 50% of the price of the entire UPS system. Therefore, their choice must be treated as responsibly as the choice of an uninterruptible power supply. At the same time, special requirements are imposed on batteries for building a backup power system.

Igor Gorokhov Head of the assembly group, TC Volt

Conventional starter batteries, which require periodic maintenance and emit sulfuric acid fumes during operation, are not intended for use in enclosed spaces in close proximity to people. Moreover, starter batteries are not intended for autonomous power supply and instantly fail after 2-3 discharges.

The question arises, what to choose? We remember the second rule: gel batteries GEL (Gelled Electrolite) or batteries built on AGM (Absorptive Glass Mat) technology are best suited for use with a UPS. Despite the abbreviation obscure at first glance, both types of batteries are lead-acid, but differ from each other in the type of technology used.

In AGM batteries, between the lead plates, there are fiberglass mats - separators tightly compressed on both sides (they act like a sponge, preventing the acid from spreading), soaked in electrolyte.

In GEL batteries, the electrolyte is also located between the plates, but due to the addition of silicon dioxide, it is brought to a jelly-like mass - gel.

From here - electrolyte in these maintenance-free batteries does not spill. During chemical reaction gases, water will decompose into hydrogen and oxygen, but, upon recombination, the ions of these chemical elements do not evaporate, but remain in the closed sealed space of the battery, “returning” back to the electrolyte, which retains its properties for 5-10 years.

This increases the service life of the backup power supply system of the boiler room, and both types of batteries can be used indoors, supplied only with natural system ventilation.

Among the advantages of these types of batteries are: the ability to operate in a wide temperature range from -30 to + 50-60 ° C. Also, they can be installed in any position, except for the “upside down” not recommended by the manufacturer.

Igor Gorokhov

AGM technology is newer than GEL. It should be noted that the gel battery it is very sensitive to overcharging and reaches its nominal capacity only after 15-20 discharge / charge cycles, but, unlike AGM, it withstands a greater number of these cycles, and also withstands discharge during undercharging better. For example, if there was a repeated power outage, and the capacity is completely restored after a deep discharge.

The asset of AGM batteries (with the same capacity) is a lower price than gel ones, a higher current output power (which is important when starting powerful equipment, such as a pump), and a high charging speed. But at the same time, batteries of this type do not “tolerate” undercharging and work less with deep discharge. In the event of an undercharged battery being discharged (for example, the light was turned off again, and the boiler is powered by the UPS again), the battery capacity is irreversibly reduced.

Conclusions: when building an individual uninterruptible power supply system for a cottage heating system, it is necessary to take into account many nuances, ranging from the choice of equipment, calculating the power of the UPS and ending with the installation of equipment. All this requires professional knowledge, which can be acquired by following the advice of our experts and studying the advising topics on the portal.

After reading the article "What to do if there is no electricity on the site?" you will learn, . In the topic of the forum is collected.

As described above, online UPS technology fully meets all the requirements of gas and other boilers (provided they have a through neutral (phase-dependent) - for expensive boilers).

If you have a boiler, for example, a solid fuel one, for which the switching time of electricity is not critical, for a few tens of milliseconds and there are only 1-2 circulation pumps, then more suitable for you a budget option uninterruptible service. You can read this in the review of the best UPS for the boiler. line-interactive.

Briefly about the through neutral - it is understood that on the plug and on the UPS output socket (where the boiler is connected), ALWAYS one leg of the plug and one "hole" of the UPS output socket is live, and the other is neutral (and you MUST connect the UPS correctly to your mains and connect symmetrically boiler). In most UPSs, you can simply ring with a regular tester (of course, in the off state), connect one end of the tester to one of the legs of the plug and plug the other end into the UPS output socket - only neutral rings (that's why it is called "through". You can find many articles on the Internet dedicated to this topic (search for: UPS phasing, UPS neutral through, etc.).

In the absence of a through neutral, the boilers (phase-dependent ones go into error stop working).

The most popular and in 95% of cases, sufficient power for an online uninterruptible technology is 1000VA / 800W, it is more than enough for a boiler (which power consumption is on average 120 - 150 W) and several circulation pumps (150 - 400 W), must not be confused with borehole pumps (they have large starting currents and at the time of launch they consume 3-6 times more than the power rating indicated on it). For a 1000VA UPS - it is better not to connect borehole pumps, refrigerators, and other equipment including electric motors (they require more powerful UPS and much more expensive ones).

As a result, the most popular will be the comparison of online UPS technology with a capacity of 1000VA / 800W.

A good UPS with a capacity of 1000VA / 700W (competitors have 800W).

The main advantages of the INELT Monolith K1000 LT UPS:

  • there are no clear advantages.

Informativeness:

availability of video (review)

The main disadvantages of the INELT Monolith K1000 LT UPS:

  • this is the need to connect at least 3 external batteries (relative to competitors who have only 2 pcs) - this leads to an increase in the cost of the entire solution - a UPS for the boiler;
  • the presence of a through neutral (phase dependence) - this information is not indicated on the websites of UPS sellers.

Here are the reviews:

Reviews from Yandex Market:
Advantages:
Flaws:

Does not operate on battery power in conjunction with a phase-dependent boiler.

A comment:

I bought it to maintain the autonomous operation of the Buderus gas phase-dependent boiler. Together with the UPS, I purchased three 55 amp Delta batteries (this model needs at least three batteries for autonomous operation). Collected, connected. From the network works. Does not work on batteries. Turning the plug over, connecting the stabilizer after the UPS did not help, when switching to battery operation, it ignites the boiler, which goes out after 5 seconds and gives a burner error. Before purchasing this model, consult, the UPS is quite expensive, together with the batteries it cost me more than 40,000 rubles.

Positive feedback

Advantages:

Ability to connect almost any battery: long battery life

Double conversion: no stabilizer needed, wide input voltage range Pure sine output and zero switching time: even the most fastidious devices "can't tell the difference"

Flaws:

Noisy fan, It always runs at maximum speed, so using this UPS in any residential or work environment is a dubious pleasure.

I got a version with an LCD screen, I'm not happy that the backlight turns off very quickly (it would not hurt to keep it always on) and the fact that by default the screen shows only the output voltage, and if you choose something else, but automatically returns to him. I would like to have all the important parameters on the screen by default: input, output, battery charge and load.

Softinka included is not bad, but IMHO, only if the uninterruptible power supply is used only to power computers. In particular, I would like to see more advanced notification settings.

A comment:

So far, everything is ok, the Ferroli boiler works for me from it without any problems. It's already been 3 years, the UPS is working and does not attract attention, so I really like it. It stands on the floor, the room is quite dusty, but due to the high speed of the fan, dust apparently does not linger inside, because it is quite clean inside.

Summary:

A good UPS, somewhat lagging behind its competitors in terms of the number of external batteries (which makes it more expensive), minus the lack of a through neutral - limits its use for boilers.

In the shop.

Addition:

you should not trust the reviews completely - if the fan sucks air with dust into the device (UPS, computer, etc.), then the dust usually remains inside the device, and is not blown out completely. It is necessary to clean (open and then blow through - vacuum similar devices at least once a year.

Reviews from Yandex Market:
Advantages:

Didn't like it (read below)

Flaws:

After a month of work with a gas boiler, it caught fire and the entire boiler room was filled with smoke. This is Chinese tin!!!

A comment:

The inverter was bought from the official on the street. Vavilov. It was purchased to work only in conjunction with a gas boiler (and only with it!). We also bought new 100 amph batteries. Inverter load when enabled gas burner was no more than 190 watts and more and more nothing is included in this Chinese. The house almost burned down, it’s good that the boiler room is sheathed with iron according to GOST. Recently they called from the repair ... From the first minutes they began to reproach me that I connected a refrigerator and other things to the inverter .... To all my answers that this was not the case, they told me the opposite. People! Please be careful with this product. Then you will not prove that it is the inverter that is to blame and not you. They will tell you that it was you who connected the whole house to this product, and even in addition to a neighbor ... I EXTREMELY do not recommend buying.

Advantages:

The ratio of the price of the device and its passport characteristics. Analogues are much more expensive.

Real on-line, with unstable voltage, it is able to normally keep even very sensitive electronics working. High-quality assembly and soldering of elements.

Flaws:

Unreliable cooling system. The fan speed is controlled by the load of the instrument and not by the actual ambient temperature. When it rises in the room, the device simply burns out. The fan itself during operation has extraneous noise.

A comment:

We use this device in the networks of the Internet provider. Loss statistics are lower than those of the promoted APCs, but there is an inadequacy in behavior.

The main advantage is that it is very stable in working with even very poor networks, where operating currents are from 150-180 V.

It does not work well with generators (the "generator" mode can cause the device to hang and stop).

Poorly tolerates an increase in room temperature - neither ventilation nor protection works, the device may burn out

In general, the model is raw, but powerful enough. Due to the lack of new models, apparently, we will have to work with what we have.

Summary:

The average uninterruptible power supply, minus the lack of a through neutral - limits it in its application to boilers. Reviews make you think. Plus - good specifications by voltage.

ASSESSMENT price-quality - 6 (on a 10 point scale)

Good 1000VA / 800W UPS.

The main advantages of the P-Com Pro 1H UPS:

  • the presence of a through neutral;
  • a complete set with a charge current of 13A is possible (which allows the use of batteries with a total capacity of more than 300Ah);
  • suitable for all boilers and other demanding equipment.

Informativeness:

Availability of video (quite detailed, technical).

Eat technical review, you can find it on request in search engines: "Observations on the UPS Pro 1H"

The main disadvantages of the P-Com Pro 1H UPS:

  • the reviews indicate the absence of galvanic isolation;

In fact, the absence of an isolation transformer in this model is not a minus, like the rest of the contestants. Since there is no neutral concept on the second winding, which will cause problems with the operation of phase-dependent boilers. People who want an honest galvanic isolation (without grounding it) in an uninterruptible power supply to work in their boiler room do not quite understand what they are writing about.

Fairly good reviews on the Yandex market (there is feedback from sellers on reviews, see discussions):

Reviews from Yandex Market:
Advantages:

Quiet, smart, powerful, lightweight, inexpensive.

Flaws:

There is no galvanic isolation. Disgustingly squeaks when there is a power failure in the network. Forced cooling is never disabled, even in idle mode.

A comment:

A good choice. Buderus g234 still managed to make friends with him without additional dances with tambourines (without an isolation transformer). It is necessary to make grounding from the boiler to the bus in the shield with an unbreakable wire and everything will work

Advantages:

Power, build quality, price

Flaws:

Not found yet

A comment:

I took it home, as there are constant voltage drops and the lights often turn off. There are no complaints about P-Com Pro 1H yet. Everything works like clockwork - the power is 100% consistent with the declared one, a simple convenient menu - even a girl can figure it out, quite quiet, looks great, and this despite the fact that its price is quite democratic. Recommend to everyone to buy

Summary:

A good UPS for a boiler, the presence of a through neutral, allows you to use it for almost any boiler. The possibility of completing with a more powerful charging current makes it applicable for large capacities (over 300 Ah). Other characteristics are not inferior to competitors.

You can in the online store.

Minus:

Noise - a characteristic inherent in all UPSs of online technology, the fan cools the transistors that are always working, and in this technology they work constantly.

ASSESSMENT price-quality - 9 (on a 10 point scale)

Russian winters have always been severe - you can't argue with that. Such a winter is a test of any building for strength, including all its systems. If the house is warm and comfortable, then there is nothing to worry about, but what if something was not taken into account when installing the system? Let's check the boiler, the pump - everything works. But if the electricity goes out, everything else will go out. In this case, the UPS for heating boilers will be the way out of the situation.

UPS for heating boilers

What is it for?

Everything is clear here: for the boiler to work, an uninterruptible power supply is required. But will this element always be able to solve all problems? Unfortunately, not always.

If electricity is absent for the same time as it is present, then no UPS for heating boilers will help you. Such a device simply does not have time to charge for correct operation.

There are several other cases where such a device is not needed. However, under standard conditions, it is simply irreplaceable.

So, an uninterruptible power supply is a secondary source electrical energy. Most consumers experience unwanted power outages for various reasons.

The principle of operation of such a device is based on the initial accumulation of electricity in batteries, after which it is given as needed. Note that in such devices all processes are automatic. One rule must be remembered: UPS charging will take longer than discharging.

If you have a modern gas boiler, then in this case the power supply is needed only for the pump to work and the automation module to be controlled. The power of such equipment in total will be about 100-200 W, and this is 1-2 incandescent lamps.

It happens that the electricity disappears for a very short time, no more than half an hour. For such a case, choosing a battery for a heating boiler is very simple. In this case, the cost of the device will not be very high.

How does a UPS work?

So, the composition of such a device as a UPS for a heating boiler includes the following elements:

  • The power supply itself.
  • one or more 12 volt batteries.

So, in normal mode, the battery is charging. Further, the alternating voltage is converted to 12 volts and goes to the built-in charger. Also, 220 V power is supplied to the electrical equipment of the boiler - directly from the network. As the battery is fully charged, a shutdown will occur. Power will continue to come in transit from the network, passing by the automation of the device.

If there is no incoming current from the mains, the device will start the conversion constant voltage 12 Volts from batteries and alternating - 220 V. It will be supplied to the input of the boiler and other consumers connected here.

Thus, based on the foregoing, we can conclude that the duration of the boiler will depend on the total capacity of the batteries, as well as on the power of the boiler's electrical equipment.

Choosing a UPS

When you make a choice of such an element as an uninterruptible switch for a heating boiler, several aspects should be taken into account. The first one is the UPS type.

The example we looked at above shows us the features of an off-line UPS. The automation of such devices will turn on as needed to charge the battery or when converting direct to alternating current when the general network is turned off.

All the rest of the time, the boiler is powered through the transit line, without affecting the automation of the device. That is why in normal mode the output voltage will fully correspond to the network parameters. If they are not stable, then that is how they enter the boiler. This nuance is just a disadvantage of devices. But in order for the pump to work well, it is important to ensure stable and well-defined current properties.

UPS for gas heating boilers can also be made in the on-line version. Such devices do not have a transit line.

Regardless of the mode, the voltage passes through the double conversion inverter. So, first, an alternating voltage of 220V from the mains is converted into a constant 12V. Then - on the contrary, and then goes to the exit.

Such stabilizers for heating boilers always provide a stable voltage that will not depend on the input properties. Their cost is somewhat higher, however, if there is an unstable voltage, they are able to provide the boiler with electricity with stable parameters.

Battery and charging power

To connect additional batteries, the UPS must be able to connect external batteries. Internal will rarely have a capacity greater than 20 Ah, but this is usually not enough.

When you choose batteries for heating and charging boilers, you should be guided by very simple rule: This ratio of charging current to battery capacity should be 1:10. So, charging with a charge current of 5A can effectively charge a battery that has a capacity of 50A / h.

Digital blocks have automatically regulated chargers, however, they also have a range of charge currents. For example, if a range such as 4.5 - 6.0A is indicated, then this will mean that a battery with a capacity of 45-60A / h can be used with such a device. Note that batteries should not be located far from the inverter. This can significantly reduce current readings.

Calculate backup time

If you are thinking about purchasing a voltage stabilizer for a heating boiler, then you should definitely pay attention to such a moment as the maximum time that the boiler can keep working. This parameter is very important, since this is the main purpose of installing this additional device.

It is worth noting that gas boilers that have a power of up to 25 kW usually have one built-in pump. That is why, together with simple electronics, the consumption of such a boiler will be 90-150 watts.

So, taking into account the margin, the power of such a device as a stabilizer for a heating boiler should be 300 watts. From the table above, we can say that in order to ensure the smooth operation of a small boiler that has a power of 150 W, a 150 Ah battery is needed for 10 hours.

Uninterruptible in the system

Voltage stabilizers for heating boilers decide in heating system its main task is to provide electricity to warm equipment for a short period of lack of voltage in external networks. When permanent and extended power outages are observed, the UPS should be considered as an auxiliary system that will work in the overall backup power concept.

As a rule, such systems are based on backup power generators. So, it is not necessary to install a large and expensive backup power installation for only one boiler. A small unit is enough, which will work only for the period of switching automation from the main power to the spare.
