How to properly install an interior door yourself. How to install an interior door with your own hands: from measuring the opening to hanging the panel and installing the cladding. Features of installation of interior doors with MDF frames

Home renovations will look unfinished without installing an interior element such as doors. They protect the living space from external negative factors, promote warmth and sound insulation, and bring coziness and comfort. Common at first glance, they differ in material, shape, color, design, and have many classifications and types. Despite their differences, all doors require certain knowledge and skills to install them. This is a very painstaking and jewelry-precise job for a team of two people. Despite the complexity of the work, installing doors with your own hands is quite possible for anyone who skillfully handles the tool. The main thing is to do everything gradually, measuredly, without haste, observing the rules for installing doors.

  • Measurements, selection, purchase of doors.
  • Preparing the opening for installation of a new door.
  • Installing hinges and locks on door leaf.
  • Door frame assembly.
  • Installation of additional elements.
  • Fastening the door frame in doorway.
  • Connecting the door leaf to the frame.
  • Fixation of the structure using polyurethane foam.
  • Fastening of fittings and platbands.

To perform the work you will need a certain tool:

  • hammer;
  • chisels 16 and 20 mm;
  • roulette;
  • crowbar;
  • level;
  • screwdriver and screwdriver;
  • wood hacksaw with fine teeth;
  • miter box;
  • drill and hammer drill;
  • if possible, a milling machine, a circular saw.

Materials for door installation:

  • door leaf and door frame;
  • door fittings (handles, hinges, locks);
  • polyurethane foam;
  • wedges;
  • nails, screws and dowels.

Plastered and prepared door slopes

Before installing the door, you should prepare the installation site. If there is an old door, then we dismantle it. To do this, using a crowbar, avoiding strong and sudden movements, first remove the platbands. Carefully lift and remove the old door leaf from the hinges. Using the same crowbar, we dismantle the door frame; to facilitate the process, we file the frame in several places with a hacksaw. Quite often in houses the door frame was cemented. And to remove it, you will have to break the cement with a hammer.

To facilitate door installation, the slopes can be leveled and plastered. To complete the preparation, we clear the doorway of construction debris. If the doorway has never been used, you can immediately begin measuring it.

Taking measurements, choosing, purchasing

To purchase the right door, you will need the height and width dimensions, as well as the dimensions of the doorway slopes. Since in most cases the doorway has uneven edges, you should take measurements in several places and select the smallest size.

We lay the floor covering for proper installation of the box

Important! When taking dimensions, you should take into account the gap between the door frame and the doorway. It should be 10-15 mm. It is recommended to install doors after installation flooring, if there is not one yet, then the dimensions should include the height of the floor covering and the gap between the floor and the door. For a more visual measurement, you can place parts of the flooring in the doorway. This is necessary to know the exact level of the floor; the free movement of the door depends on it. The gap between the door and the floor is usually 10 mm.

Now that the old doors have been dismantled, dimensions have been taken, and the slopes have been leveled and plastered, you can order the doors. As a rule, doors have standard sizes, but if necessary, you can make an individual order based on the size of the doorway.

To choose the right the right doors, you need to know their types and intended purpose. For installation in a house, you should pay attention to the entrance, interior and, if necessary, kitchen doors.

We also choose according to the opening method. The most popular option is swing doors. Doors are made using approximately the same technology - lining and internal filling. The power structure or skeleton of the door, where the lock is inserted and the hinges are attached, is sheathed with fiberboard, MDF or other material, and the internal space is filled.

There are several door designs - solid, paneled and smooth.

Smooth doors, they are also panel doors, can be made with an outer layer of MDF and fiberboard, sometimes such doors are sheathed with plastic. They are usually painted, veneered or laminated. The price of such doors varies depending on the materials and cladding method. The most practical and affordable are doors covered with laminate. Painted doors can be either cheap or expensive. It all depends on the type of material and painting method. The most expensive are doors lined with natural veneer.

Paneled doors stand out for their open design and the presence of drawings, patterned carvings and stained glass windows. Such doors can be filled with glass, carved panels, as well as other materials. They are made from solid solid wood or combined materials. Prices for panel doors depend on the type of materials. The cheapest and most accessible ones are made from soft types of wood, as well as from combined materials (MDF, HDF).

Solid wood doors made from valuable wood. This affects primarily their price and weight; they are quite high. The doors are coated with varnishes and various impregnations, thus they are well protected from damage by insects, fungi and mold.

Having selected the necessary doors and received them, we proceed to step-by-step installation doors.

After the purchase, we unpack the door leaf, trim, door frame, extensions, and fittings. We carefully check everything for cracks, chips or other damage. As long as the lock, hinges or other door fittings are not cut in, the doors can be returned to the manufacturer.

Preparing places for attaching the lock and hinges

Installing the door leaf on the floor for ease of cutting with a milling cutter

Lock hole

Before assembling the door frame, you should mark and select with a milling cutter or chisel the place where the hinges and lock will be attached to the door leaf and the vertical post. To do this, we install the door leaf in a vertical position on the wide side in special stands. To avoid damaging the canvas, the inside of the stands is upholstered with fabric. We apply the lock and use a pencil to mark the location of its installation. To make it convenient to use the lock, install it at a height of 900 mm from the floor. To install the hinges, measure 200 mm from the bottom and top edges of the door. We attach the loops and mark the place for milling. By using hand cutter or chisels, we select the excess so that the hinges and lock lie flush. We put them back and use a drill to drill holes for the screws.

Finally, we apply the vertical post to the door leaf in such a way that there is a gap of 2-3 mm between the horizontal crossbar of the door frame and the door leaf. We mark the place where the hinges are attached and the place for the lock tongue and select the excess using a milling machine or chisel. We attach the hinges and drill holes for the screws.

Important! After cutting with a milling cutter or chisel, the places for the lock and hinges must be treated with varnish. In this simple way the tree will be protected from the influence of moisture. It should be remembered that entrance and heavy doors are mounted on three hinges, and for interior doors two hinges will be enough.

Installing hinges and lock

When the locations for the lock and hinges have been selected with a milling cutter, you can begin installing them.

With loops things are simple. They just need to be screwed to the door leaf.

Mortise lock

Installing a lock, on the other hand, will require some effort. In order for the lock to fit correctly, it is applied to the side of the door and the holes for the handles are marked as if using a stencil. shut-off valves and fastenings. Using a cutter or chisel, select the location for the lock to the desired depth. Then we put it in place and screw it on.

Important! When choosing a lock, you should take into account the width of the door frame. The depth of the hole for the lock should not exceed 1/3 of its width, otherwise deformation of the door leaf cannot be avoided.

When starting to assemble the door frame, we measure the height of the vertical posts and trim them using a miter box. Horizontal bars are made to fit the size of the door leaf.

Since assembling the box requires a large amount of free space, the assembly process itself is carried out on the floor. To avoid accidentally damaging the door frame on the floor, we place two or three wooden slats along the entire length of the door leaf.

We attach the horizontal crossbar to the posts. The connection points can be lightly tapped with a hammer for a better connection, and using a screwdriver we fix the box by screwing the screws into corner connections.

Important! There are doors with a ready-made door frame. Installation of such doors is very simple. In this case, the door frame is simply adjusted to the doorway and secured in it.

Fastening additional parts

If the door width is several centimeters smaller door slope, extras should be installed. You can do without installing them, but then you will have to completely make the slopes, and chips and dirt will appear on them over time. Therefore, installing extensions in such cases is the best way out of the situation.

As extensions, planks of the same color as the door, with a thickness of 8 to 12 mm, are used. When fixed, they form a small portal, with edges that coincide with the edges of the wall.

Installation of the accessory is carried out as follows. Using a cutter or chisel, a quarter of 10x10 mm or 8x8 mm is selected in the door frame, depending on the thickness of the trim strips. We do this along the entire outer contour of the door frame. We cut the vertical trim strips to the height of the box, as well as the horizontal trim strip. We install the door frame in place and fix it, then install the trim strips into the trimmed quarters. We attach the planks themselves to the slope using dowels and self-tapping screws.

Installation of a door frame in an opening

Having completed the assembly of the door frame, we proceed to install it in the doorway.

Fixing the door frame with wedges from above

We place the box inside the opening and fix it with wedges, 2-3 wedges for each post and 2 for the crossbar. Align the door frame vertically and horizontally. You can adjust the level of inclination by lightly hitting the wedges. Now you can secure the box. To do this, use a drill or hammer drill to drill holes in the rack and wall. All that remains is to install the dowels and screw the box with self-tapping screws.

Important! It is better to make the wedges from wood of the same density as the door frame.

Hanging the door leaf

After installing the frame, we begin hanging the door. First of all, we screw the loops onto the previously prepared places. For this purpose, so-called card (plate) detachable hinges with a removable rod or a rod embedded in the hinge are usually used. There are also one-piece hinges, but they are used less frequently. In the case of a rod embedded in the hinge, the door leaf can be installed or removed simply by carefully lifting it to a small height of the rod. If the design of the door frame does not allow the doors to be raised, one-piece hinges or hinges with a removable rod are used. To install one-piece hinges, simply attach them to the frame and then screw them to the door leaf. To install or remove a door leaf from hinges with a removable pin, you need to remove the pin from the hinge and then insert it back.

Now that the hinges are hung, you can put the door leaf in place. It is best to do this together, when one person holds the doors suspended, and the second secures the permanent hinges using self-tapping screws or guides them into place in the case of collapsible hinges.

Important! When choosing hinges, you should pay attention to which direction the doors will open.

We fill the gap between the doorway and the frame polyurethane foam, thereby increasing the heat and sound insulation of the doorway. This material allows you to fill all small cracks and crevices. The foam is easy to work with and can be easily applied to any surface, and thanks to its astringent properties, the structure will be stronger.

Before filling the gap between the doorway and the door frame, you should protect the door frame from foam that accidentally gets on it. To protect the box, it is covered with film or masking tape. If foam does get on the door frame, then fresh foam can be cleaned with any alcohol-containing solution or solvent. But hardened foam can only be removed mechanically, which is fraught with scratches and abrasions.

Polyurethane foam has the property of increasing in size from 50% to 250%, which can lead to deformation of the door frame. To prevent this from happening, spacers are installed between the vertical posts or thick cardboard is placed between the already installed and tightly closed door leaf and the door frame. Before you start filling the foam container, shake it thoroughly for a minute. For better adhesion of the foam to the surface, the opening and the outside of the door frame can be slightly moistened with water. The main thing is not to overdo it, otherwise the effect will be exactly the opposite.

To ensure against deformation and distortion of the door frame, it is better to apply polyurethane foam in two stages. During the first pass, the foam is applied pointwise. After allowing the foam to harden, after 1-3 hours you can fill the remaining voids. We cut off the excess polyurethane foam after it has completely hardened.

Important! If the gap between the opening and the door frame is too narrow, the tube of the polyurethane foam sprayer can be flattened a little, this will make it more convenient, and most importantly, to fill all the voids efficiently.

If the gap between the doorway and the frame is large, 8-9 cm or more, then we fill the free space with suitable material (wood, drywall, etc.) and only then fill it with foam.

The vertical gap should be filled with foam, starting from the bottom and gradually moving up. Thus, the foam will create its own support. If there are extensions, additional spacers should be installed on them to avoid deformation.

Installation of platbands and door fittings

At the final stage of door installation, the installation of platbands is performed. First, we cut the platband in height, then we cut the upper edge of the vertical platbands at an angle of 45 degrees. We make the same 45-degree trim for the horizontal casing at both ends. For these operations we use a miter box. You can secure the casing using small nails or universal mounting adhesive.

Applying glue to the platband

Installing a platband on a door frame

Beginners, having decided to do all the work of installing interior doors themselves, often miss important nuances which are well known experienced craftsmen. An important point careful preparation for installation work and the use of reliable fasteners will be necessary.

Right installed door will close without extra effort, without falling apart, even if they clap periodically. The supporting base is the box. The reliability of the structure depends on how strong it is.

The structure must be correctly aligned - for this you need to purchase a building level. It is best to use a laser, as it is very convenient to work with.

Installation of interior doors is carried out in several stages. The door leaf and frame must be equipped with fittings. To make it convenient to close the door, you need to install a handle. If required, it can have a lock with a spring mechanism. Hinges should be made on the door and frame. The canvas can only be hung after preliminary adjustments have been made. After this, you can proceed to the installation of platbands.

How to markup

Installing doors with your own hands will require labor from a beginner. If the master completes the installation in 1 day, then a novice builder can spend much more time. This point must be taken into account if emergency installation of the structure is required.

It is important to complete all stages in a clear sequence, strictly observing building codes. A number of door blocks already have fastenings for installation. But there are products whose box will have to be assembled on your own. They are sets that include blocks of wood and strips for platbands. In addition, the manufacturer includes a door leaf in the finished kit.

If you decide to assemble the box yourself, you can use different methods. You need to pay close attention to the quality of the work, because if even the slightest error occurs in the measurements, you will either have to do all the work again or buy new parts of the structure.

Install the door in interior partition possible with or without a threshold. The simplest option would be to install a structure without a threshold, but option 2 will require a timber strip. In this case, the finished structure will look like a rectangle.

Step-by-step instructions will be of help. Before starting work, it is necessary to take exact measurements. First you need to find out the dimensions of the opening. Then you should make calculations by determining the dimensions of the side posts and the lintel. Then you need to determine optimal size door leaf, not forgetting technological gaps. Having made the markings, the elements are sawed off using a hacksaw, and then the assembly of the interior doors begins.

It is important to correctly calculate the thickness of the box, which should be no less than the thickness of the wall. To ensure accurate measurements, you need to use a tape measure. Beginning builders should not rely on identical elements, such as side posts, being “mirror-like.” To avoid measurement errors, each element must be measured separately on the right side, and then on the left. If deviations are found in the process, they must be taken into account in further work.

How to install interior door on one's own? Particular care must be taken to position the fender beam, which must have a gap for the mounting foam. It is enough to allocate 1 cm to it. The same should be done with the lintel and hinge bar.

The gap on the inside should be much smaller, 0.3 cm is enough. If the interior door has a threshold, then the gap should go along the entire perimeter of the structure. When installing a structure without a threshold, a gap must be left between the floor and the canvas. The average value is 1 cm. Such assembly and installation of interior doors will be considered completed correctly.

On the vertical posts, marks for sawing are required, which are determined on inside bar. If the hole size is insufficient, it must be enlarged. If the hole is too large, it can be reduced by laying plasterboard cut to size.

Door installation options

To make the cut, it is better to use a lathe. In this case, installing the door frame will take little time. If you don’t have a machine, then a hacksaw and miter box are suitable alternatives.

When installing an interior door, you can use the following 2 methods:

  • make a cut at an angle of 45º;
  • do the work at an angle of 90º.

How to install an interior door with your own hands? If we talk about option 1, it is quite complicated. The work will require increased attention from an inexperienced carpenter. But as a result of carefully executed joining, you will get a product that looks very beautiful.

In order to connect several elements, you need to use self-tapping screws. You need to make special holes for them. If the door is made of MDF, then the work should be carried out in advance, which will avoid damage to the workpieces. It is most convenient to work using a drill whose diameter is 3/4 of the diameter of the fasteners. It is best to buy self-tapping screws whose threads reach the head.

If we talk about method 2, it assumes that the cutting angle will be 90º. To perform the work you will need a hacksaw with fine teeth. The upper beam is attached to the vertical posts with 2 self-tapping screws; they are screwed in on each side. In order to make a threshold, the timber must be cut at a right angle.

The easiest way to assemble the structure is to lay out the elements on the floor or big table. The master must install the fittings. Carrying out interior decoration, it is necessary to secure the functional fittings correctly.

Don't forget about fire safety. In order to quickly evacuate the premises, it is necessary to install a door that opens outward.

How to install interior doors? There are several options. The hinges are hung on the right or left - there are universal products on sale. If previously it was possible to buy hinges that required careful insertion, now you can purchase products that do not require cutting the veneer.

You need to make an indent from the top edge of the canvas, 20 cm is enough. Then hang the loops. You should retreat the same distance from the bottom. Variations are possible: in these cases, they retreat 5 cm in both directions. The structure can be further strengthened by hanging 3 loops. It is placed 50 cm from the top line.

Self-installation of the door frame

In order to fix the box in the opening, you need to buy an anchor. The door will be held securely by 3 long screws. In addition, the structure will be supported by polyurethane foam.

You can drill a door frame made of wood without preparatory work. The installation procedure is as follows:

  1. The door base is assembled on the floor.
  2. The structure is lifted and installed in the opening.
  3. Wedges are made from leftover lumber and placed between the walls and the frame. This creates a gap for the polyurethane foam.
  4. Screwing in self-tapping screws. Leveling the base using building level. The accuracy of the installation can be checked with a plumb line. If deviations are detected, they can be corrected by loosening or tightening the screws.
  5. Installation of hinges and fabric. Before applying polyurethane foam, the box must be sealed with tape. You need to insert cardboard into the gap. The door is closed and the cavity is filled with foam.

After finishing installation work you need to wait for the foam to dry completely. The excess can be trimmed off, and then the platbands can be installed.

In this article, we will step by step understand how to do it correctly. Today, not every person is able to independently install interior and entrance doors into doorways, or at least do it correctly. Turning to specialists will take up quite a bit of money if you need to install, say, 10 doors in your new house or an apartment. To save extra money, I advise everyone to read this step by step instructions. Special attention: we will talk about wooden doors for interior use. Installing doors yourself from scratch consists of 10 steps.

Step 1.

Do-it-yourself door installation.

We start by unpacking the purchased set of interior or front door, and the door frame from it. This should be done extremely carefully, since often at this stage the door receives the first injuries. When opening the package with a knife, sometimes the surface of the door itself is touched, and if the above-mentioned door has a varnish or laminated coating, the defect is very noticeable and is not easy to eliminate. Special attention: Initially, I advise you to unpack only the door frame. It is better to unpack the door itself before direct use, so as not to damage it even before using it. appearance.

Step 2.

Do-it-yourself door installation.

The unpacked door frame should be assembled. In the unpacked kit you will find three main components and one additional one. An additional connecting wooden strip is provided for temporary fixation.

At the ends of the door frame panels there are plastic inserts hammered into special grooves.

These inserts must be knocked out, but this should be done extremely carefully so as not to damage the surface of the door frame. To do this, it is best to use a wooden peg rather than hitting the insert directly with a hammer.

Step 3.

Do-it-yourself door installation.

The parts are assembled in U-shape groove to groove. At this stage it is important to maintain the correct geometry. Unevenness is not allowed here! The connected elements are secured with previously knocked out plastic inserts described in step 2. They are driven into the formed holes when connecting the door frame. this work made using an ordinary hammer. The plank should be finished using a peg, as before, so as not to spoil the wooden surface.

If the elements of the box have shifted when hammering in the insert, they can be aligned with the same hammer. The body should be hit on the wooden plank attached to it.

The end result on at this stage should be the same as in the photo.

Step 4.

Do-it-yourself door installation.

At all subsequent stages we will need a special power tool, which includes:

  • screwdriver;
  • drill;
  • milling head.

Having completed all the steps described in step 3 and thus connecting the top of the door frame, we can move on to its bottom part. The same one is used for this additional element kit - fixing wooden strip.

Having measured the width along the bottom of the box, we fix it with a wooden plank. We fasten it with screws in places that will subsequently be sealed with mortar into the wall. In this case, you should start screwing in the screw not from the very edge of the plank, since at the fastening point you will only split the plank. We screw it in at an angle approximately as shown in the photo.

See the photo below for the final result of step 4.

Step 5.

Do-it-yourself door installation.

At this point you should measure the height of your doorway. It is necessary to take into account the height of the threshold or its absence. Having decided on the desired parameters, we cut off the bottom of the door frame. This is best done using a miter saw.

Step 6.

We insert the door into the door frame prepared for installation for fitting. Let me remind you that even at this stage it is not necessary to unpack it completely. It is enough to cut only the holes for the handles and the lock. How they are installed will be discussed later. If everything is fine, you can safely proceed to installing the door frame in the doorway.

Step 7

At this stage we proceed directly. To do this, we need to position the door frame perfectly level in the opening. This can be done using a level. After this, we screw the box to the opening. In our particular case, you can use ordinary wood screws, since in the opening made of plasterboard sheets laid down wooden blocks. In other cases, you will have to use a dowel-nail, etc. materials.

The fasteners are screwed in at an angle in those places that will subsequently be hidden under the mounting foam and trim. Under no circumstances should you attach your frame through front side. This will greatly spoil the appearance and may also cause the door to not function properly, for example making it difficult to open or close.

The gap between the door frame and the opening is foamed with polyurethane foam. Afterwards, a slope is constructed in this place using dry construction finishing mixtures.

Step 8

While the mounting foam we used to seal the gap between the frame and the wall in the opening hardens, we will begin preparing the door leaf. We'll put a lock in it and install handles and hinges.

Using a measuring tool, we mark the location door lock at the end of the door. Based on the shape of the lock, we outline a contour along which it will be necessary to remove a layer of wood so that the front part of our lock is flush with the surface of the door leaf. A router saw should be used to remove wood.

In the photo below, there is a lock used in our particular case, as well as a cut layer of wood necessary for the correct installation of the above-mentioned lock.

For the working part of the lock, more than deep hole, which is best done with a drill with a drill of a suitable diameter.

The work on installing the lock does not end there, since it is necessary to make more holes for the handles on both sides of the door being installed. This is done with the same drill and drill bit. As I already said, it is important in both cases to take into account the required drill diameter.

At the same stage we install door handles. We put the core into the hole in the canvas in which the lock is installed. We put handles on it on both sides. Next, tighten all the necessary fasteners and clamps. In the described case, three screws and a bolt, which is screwed in with a hexagon, act as clamps and fasteners.

The final step in this step is to install the hinges. In the designated places, by analogy with installing a lock, loops are attached to the ends. As with the lock, a layer of wood is removed with a router saw so that the attached surface of the hinge is flush with the door leaf.

Step 9

Having prepared the door, we return to the box. As on the door itself, on the frame we mark the places for screwing the hinges with a measuring tool. Just as in previous similar cases, it is necessary to use a milling saw.

Next, we mark the place where it should fit into the door frame body. In this place, using a chisel, we make a hole of the required depth and attach the plug, which comes complete with hinges, a lock and handles.

Step 10

We hang the door leaf on the hinges screwed to the door frame and, admiring the result, we can deservedly praise ourselves.
The end result is shown in the photo below.

It is better to unpack the door itself just before you start using it.

Generalization: At each stage where wood was sawed, drilled or cut, its exposed areas must be covered with plain paint. This will improve the appearance and also preserve and protect the surface of the wood. Do-it-yourself door installation is real. It also adds to your experience in the repair industry.

I hope this article helped you gain the necessary knowledge and the right level of confidence to begin installing doors yourself. Good luck to you in all your endeavors.

Step-by-step video on how to install doors yourself

In any country house or apartment, the question of replacing or installing interior doors may arise. The large assortment of doors offered on the market allows you to choose a product in accordance with your taste, the design of the room and the state of your wallet. You can trust installers to install doors for a fee, or you can save money and install the door panels yourself.

Installing the canvas is not a very difficult task, but it does require some knowledge and skills. Before installing any structure, you need to know what it consists of. The door block consists of the following parts - frame, door leaf, fittings, platbands.

If the width of the wall is greater than the inserted door block, then an additional element, an extension, can be used.

The most common materials from which interior doors are made are MDF, laminated chipboard and a tree. Exist various designs, but swing doors are more popular.

The procedure for assembling and installing the door:

  • Assemble the door frame;
  • Secure the hinges to the door leaf and frame beam;
  • Insert the door frame or block into the opening;
  • Install fittings (handle, latching mechanism);
  • Install platbands.

You can install the fittings yourself, but if you are not sure own strength, then, in order not to spoil the doors, it is better to trust the professionals. The installation sequence may vary.

Correct installation of interior doors

To install interior doors from scratch, in addition to desires and skills, you will need some tools and devices. In addition, you will need polyurethane foam and a gun. To cope with the installation of a heavy structure, an assistant is needed for moral and real support.

What tools are needed to complete the work:

  • Screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • Level;
  • Wood saw, jigsaw or a circular saw;
  • Chisel;
  • Drill;
  • Fastening elements: self-tapping screws, finishing nails, anchors and others.

Door frame elements and trims are often cut at an angle of 45ᵒ. To perform this operation accurately and accurately, a miter box is used. Before installing new interior doors, you need to check the condition of all elements, their coating, and the availability of components. If defects are discovered after installing the door block, then it will be almost impossible to prove anything.

Instructions: how to install an interior door

Before installing an interior door, it is a good idea to read the instructions with pictures and use some professional advice in your work. First of all, you need to assemble the door frame. It can consist of 4 parts or be U-shaped. This depends on the availability of flooring. The frames are produced in universal sizes for doors from 600 to 900 mm, so the frame elements have to be trimmed. Carrying out the work requires care and precision.

Instructions for assembling the door frame:

  1. Cut off long elements. Take into account the size of the gap between the door leaf and the floor covering (for residential premises 10 mm) and the thickness of the floor covering.
  2. Cut off the top element. On the side of the door leaf, the size is equal to the width of the leaf itself plus 7 mm. Using a miter box, cut the elements at an angle of 45ᵒ.
  3. If a threshold is provided, then the elements from below are sawn off perpendicularly. It is also possible to wash down the upper elements at 90ᵒ.
  4. To connect elements, especially for doors made of MDF, it is necessary to drill holes at an angle of 45ᵒ using a drill with a diameter of 2.5 mm; separately in a long element you need to drill holes measuring 4.5 mm. Connect the elements with self-tapping screws.

Next, you should attach the door leaf to assembled box, keeping the gap between the frame and the door at 2.8 mm. To establish a gap, packaging cardboard can be used. If the door is double-leaf, then the distance between the two halves should be at least 4 mm.

Only after determining the side and direction of opening the door, you need to mark the place where the hinges are attached.

Usually they are placed at a distance of 20 cm, receding from the top and bottom of the door leaf. The third loop is attached at intervals of 46 cm from the top. Hinges have their own characteristics that must be taken into account during installation. If necessary, the place for attaching the “flag” of the loop is prepared using a chisel. Depending on the design of the hinges, the methods of attaching them may be different.

Installation options for interior doors

The next step is to insert the door frame into the opening. Technology may vary. If the opening is too wide, you can reduce it by attaching a wooden beam to the wall with anchors on the side where the hinges are located.

You can insert a whole block, together with the canvas or a separate box, then spacers will be required. The size of the spacer should take into account the technological distance between the bottom of the door and the frame; 6 mm should be added to the width of the door leaf. If the frame is installed separately, after hanging the door the size of the gap must be checked. It should be the same everywhere. If necessary, adjustments are made.

The box is fixed in the opening using wedges. First, the upper wedges are clogged, and then, after checking the level of the box, the lower ones. The distance between the box and the wall is filled with foam. To avoid staining surfaces, use masking tape. When the foam dries, the wedges are removed and the protruding part of the foam is cut off.

Door frame installation methods:

  1. The box is secured with 6-8 self-tapping screws required length through the through method (wooden spacers can be used).
  2. For fastening, use 3-4 points in the places where the fittings are inserted, which hides the screws.
  3. Dowels, long bolts and nuts are used as fasteners, and mounting strips are attached to the box. The whole process is regulated by level. In this case, wedges are not used.

The installation stage of the platbands is no less important than the previous ones and requires care. To install the platbands, you need to measure the length of the platband, cut the platband using a miter box at an angle of 45ᵒ, attach the platband with nails, having previously drilled holes at the fastening points measuring 1/2 or 2/3 of the diameter of the nail.

Installation of fittings can be carried out at different stages.

In some cases, all the fittings are cut in after installing the door block. The door hardware includes: 2 or 3 hinges, handles with latches and a locking mechanism. The location of the handle is determined individually, standard requirements 0.8-1.3 m from the floor.

Let's figure out how to install the door correctly

You must install the door yourself in compliance with building regulations. At correct installation there should be no distortions. The canvas should not open on its own if it is not held by a lock, or close. A correctly installed door should close smoothly with a slight push when open.

The quality of door installation depends on the following reasons:

  1. Correctly taken measurements, according to which they are manufactured door block. To take measurements of room openings, it is better to invite a specialist.
  2. Working conditions (temperature, humidity). It is advisable to install the canvas after all work is completed and the floor and walls are completely dry.
  3. All required clearances must be observed.
  4. All structural parts must be installed level, even if the walls are not level.

To keep interior doors in good condition, you need to use furniture care products and avoid exposure to aggressive substances. To process wooden door, mastic can be used.

Correct installation of interior doors with your own hands (video)

Installing interior paintings yourself seems like a difficult task. But, if you do the work in compliance with all the necessary norms and rules, this task is doable. By approaching the matter with due diligence, you can save your budget and gain valuable work experience. The result will definitely justify all the efforts. Beautiful doors into the room will become an interior decoration.

Sooner or later, the time comes to make changes to the interior; perhaps there is a need to replace the doors if they are absolutely not suitable for the chosen new style. And then the question arises of how to install an interior door yourself in order to save a round sum on calling a specialist. Carrying out this event is quite accessible to anyone who knows how to work with construction tools, has carpentry skills and knows step-by-step instructions for carrying out the work.

Not a single residential building can do without. If wooden box, in which the old door is installed is in good condition, then only the door leaf and facing panels (platbands) can be changed. This process is much easier to complete than completely replacing the door frame along with the leaf. However, such a large-scale alteration, with the replacement of the box, is quite doable.

Tools for work

To carry out any carpentry work, you must have the following tools on hand:

  • Planer for leveling end surfaces. You may also need a manual one for small ones. fine work, and electric - if the fit is sufficiently voluminous.
  • Carpenter's square - the longer, the more accurate the markings will be.
  • Construction level, plumb.
  • Screwdriver with a set of attachments (bits).
  • An extended screwdriver – you may need both a straight blade and a curved one, so it’s better to have a set.
  • One type of saw - this can be hand saw or electric circular saw.
  • Tape measure, pencil.
  • A miter box for correct cutting of corners when fitting wooden parts.

Miter box with hacksaw - necessary for precise fitting of wooden parts
  • Construction knife.
  • Hammer.
  • Chisel, chisel for removing layers of wood when making grooves for hinges and locks.

"Crowns" or hole saws - for cutting straight holes large diameter
  • Electric drill.

In addition to tools, you will need auxiliary materials and consumables:

  • Wooden wedges for door frame spacers.
  • Stain and varnish, primer and paint.
  • Self-tapping screws, dowels and anchor fasteners.
  • Polyurethane foam.

Door drawing

It is recommended that before starting work, draw up a drawing on which you must accurately indicate all the dimensions taken from the opening, door frame and door leaf. This scheme will help you quickly complete work without being distracted by measuring each part during the installation process.

To obtain an accurate picture, it is necessary to measure the height and width of the installed old door, and the thickness of interior doors is usually standard and is 40 mm. Modern doors sometimes they are slightly different from older models, and in this case it will be necessary to adjust the door leaf or change the entire door block.

Whatever decision is made - to replace the entire block or just the door leaf, you still need to start by removing the old door from its hinges.

Replacement of door leaf only

Removing the door leaf

Hinges installed on an interior door can have different designs, which means the door can be removed in different ways. However, all methods are not difficult.

As you know, door hinges consist of two parts, one of which is attached to the door, and the second to the door jamb. In some models, the axial rod is permanently fixed inside the element, which is mounted on the vertical post of the jamb, and in another part, installed on the door leaf, there is a hole where the rod should go. When removing a door hung on such hinges, you need to install a pry bar under its lower edge and apply a little force to lift the door. It is best if there is a second worker who will support the door in an upright position and then help remove it completely.

Another type of canopy in which the axle rod is inserted from the top and passes through both parts of the hinge. In order to dismantle a door hung on such hinges, it is enough to pull out the rods installed in them, which have a kind of mushroom-shaped cap on top. Place a reliable wide screwdriver under it, and, tapping its handle, pull the pin out of the loop. You need to start the process from the bottom hinge to avoid the door tipping over, which with its weight can easily tear out part of the hinge installed on the jamb, damaging its surface. This is especially undesirable if the door frame is in good condition and will be used for a new door.

After dismantling the door from the opening, it is necessary to remove the hinges, handles, and locks.

Fitting a new door

If only the door leaf is replaced, the new door will have to be adjusted to fit the existing opening, based on the dimensions of the old one. It needs to be removed exact dimensions and transfer them to a new canvas.

You can do it differently - the new door is laid on flat surface, and the old dismantled canvas is placed on top of it. The canvases are leveled along the top and along the vertical edge of the door on the side where the handle will be installed. If the new canvas is larger in size than the old one, it will need to be adjusted. Using a pencil, lines are drawn on it, along which an excess fragment is sawed off from the new canvas.

It must be remembered that for an interior door there is a gap of 5 mm between the leaf and the jamb on all sides, and at the bottom you can leave a slightly larger distance - 10 ÷ 12 mm.

Next, the excess part is cut off from the new canvas. The cut must be perfectly even and smooth, and this can only be done with a sharp and precise tool, which can be a hand-held circular saw. The cut is made using a special ruler, which is designed for use with just such a cutting tool.

The saw is set to the required cutting height (usually with a cut of 45 mm) and the door is sawed off exactly according to the markings. If there is no special guide ruler, then you can carefully cut it with a circular saw without it, leaving an allowance of about 1 ÷ 2 mm - this will be necessary in order to then fine-tune the blade with an electric planer.

Installing hinges

When it is adjusted to size, you need to mark the places where the hinges will be attached. To carry out this process accurately, you need to put the old door on the new leaf and very accurately align them with each other. At the end of the new door, mark the areas where the hinges will be installed, focusing on the old door leaf.

In this case, marking the location of the loops is first done with a pencil, and then with a construction knife. The lines from the knife turn out clear, and it will be easy to make a selection along them when cutting out the recesses necessary for installing the hinges.

Next, the door leaf is placed on its end, so that the side on which the hinges will be inserted is on top. Using a chisel (chisel), mark the depth of the future groove. The tool is placed on the lines marked with a knife, and it is hit from above with a hammer, observing the depth to which the cutting edge goes into the wood - it should go deeper by 2 ÷ 4 mm, depending on the thickness of the metal of the hinges (this can be measured in advance with a ruler or caliper) .

It is recommended to split the area designated for sampling into several fragments for ease of wood extraction. Next, the chisel is installed at a slight angle to the end of the door, with the beveled part down. and, hitting it with a hammer, the extra layer of wood is knocked out, forming the necessary recess.

The next step is to install hinges in the prepared recesses. They must be installed so that the plane of the metal plate is flush with the surface of the door end. If the metal of the hinge rises above the surface, then the recess needs to be deepened a little. If by chance the recess turns out to be somewhat larger than necessary, then a piece of thick cardboard can be placed under the loop.

When it is achieved that the loop has entered the recess intended for it, like a “glove”, straight through its holes with a thin drill with a drill sockets into which it will be convenient to screw self-tapping screws. Next, the hinges are tightly screwed to the door, and then the canvas is fitted into the door frame opening. This fitting will show the presence of gaps and their size, as well as how accurately, without distortions, the canvas fits into the doorway.

If you have a hand router at your disposal, you can very carefully select the grooves for the hinges (and even for the lock) using it.

Installing a Lock or Door Latch

  • When the hinges fit well, you can move on to making holes for the handle.
  • Location The castle is also marked by an old door. It is very important to measure the exact distance from the edge of the door to drill the hole. If it is not performed accurately, and because of this it has to be moved, then the appearance of the door may be hopelessly spoiled.
  • If a new lock is installed, its kit often includes a special stencil through which the size and exact relative position of all holes are transferred, but for control it is still necessary to take measurements.
  • If an old lock is used for a new door, then all parameters can be taken from the old door.
  • On the end side of the door, where the latch will come out, a hole is drilled using a chisel drill (“feather”), and on the main plane of the door this is usually done with a hole saw of the appropriate diameter.

  • After drilling the holes, the door leaf, if necessary, is decorated in the chosen method - this can be painting or staining followed by varnishing.
  • When the paint (varnish) has dried and the place for installing the lock elements is ready, first installed and the internal mechanism with a latch is screwed on, and then the handles are mounted and secured.

Installing the door in its original place

To make it easier to put in place, you need to lift it from the floor to the required height and install a board (or several boards) of appropriate thickness under it.

  • Then, the loops must be carefully aligned with each other and the lubricated rods must be carefully inserted into them, first into the upper loop, then into the lower one. The rods can, if necessary, be lightly tapped from above with a hammer
  • If a different type of hinge is used, the door will be hung slightly differently. It is best to do this together, since at the same time you need to get the rods of that part of the hinges that are installed on the frame into the holes located on the “reciprocal” halves, screwed to the door leaf.

Complete door replacement - including door frame

If during overhaul apartment, it turned out that it was necessary to replace not only the door, but also the door frame, which means that we need to start dismantling the old door set. This task can be even less difficult than replacing only the door leaf, since the purchased new door usually already fits perfectly into its frame.

How to install a door from scratch?

There are certain standards according to which interior doors, single or double leaf, are produced. True, no one has canceled the possibility of individually ordering doors for openings of a different size or shape.

Removing the old door and frame

Dismantling the old kit is carried out as follows:

  • As in the first case, the door leaf is removed from the hinges.
  • Next, the platbands are removed as carefully as possible.
  • The last thing to dismantle is the box. To make it easier to remove the frame bars, a through cut is made approximately in the middle of one of the sides. In this case, the box structure loses tension, loses its specified dimensions, becomes deformed, and can be easily dismantled in parts.
  • Provided that the box needs to be preserved in its entirety, using a chisel and a hammer, the installed wedges are knocked out of the gaps between the wall and the jamb. At the same time, the thrust stress is also weakened. If the jamb bars are secured to the wall with nails (anchors, etc.), then you should try to carefully pull them out, and if that doesn’t work, saw them with a hacksaw blade or in another way, thereby freeing the frame.
  • The box is carefully loosened using a pry bar and removed from the opening.
  • After dismantling the box, the opening must be cleaned of old mounting foam, if present, of dust and dirt accumulated during the operation of the door.

Manufacturing and installation of the box

When starting to assemble the box, you first need to install hinges on one of its sides; this process is carried out simultaneously with installing them on the door leaf. The hinges are attached in the same way as in the first case, which was described above. After this, they begin assembling the door frame.

The joints of the box elements may have different connections– straight with one beam overlaying another, or end-to-end at an angle of 45 degrees.

The box is assembled according to the measurements taken, which can, for example, be taken from an old kit. Using a square to control the straightness of the corners, the elements of the box are set, marks are made if corners of 45 degrees will be cut. Then, using a miter box, the corners are sawed off, after which the box is laid out on the floor and knocked down with nails or fastened with self-tapping screws.

Arrangement of box parts “overlay”, at right angles

If the elements of the box are connected to the lining at a right angle, then they can also be knocked down with nails or twisted with self-tapping screws.

In both the first and second cases, the connection must be made very carefully, since the nails may inadvertently come out in a completely undesirable place.

When the box is assembled, the hinges are screwed to it and to the door, and the lock is installed, you can go in two ways. So, you can put the door on its hinges right away, and then install it together with the frame in the doorway. Another option is to install the frame first and then hang the door.

Video: Door installation step by step, with all the details

  • If the first option is chosen, then the door must be locked with a key so that it does not open. Then carefully, without distortions, install the entire set in etc first, level it using a level both vertically in the longitudinal and transverse planes, and horizontally, carefully driving wooden wedges into the gaps between the wall and the frame to secure it.

Then, you need to secure the box to the wall using anchors, drilling through holes for them in several places, two on each side.

Holes are drilled “under hide"so that the screw heads are recessed into the wood of the box. Then they can be disguised with special decorative covers, matching them to the color of the wood, or covered with a composition made from wood glue and sawdust.

The resulting gaps must be filled with polyurethane foam, wait until the polyurethane foam expands and completely dries, after which excess composition, which protrudes from the gaps, you will need to carefully cut it off.

  • In the second case, only new box, it is also leveled, fastened with wedges and anchor elements, but at the same time it must be wedged with a wooden beam in the center - so that the vertical posts do not bend in an arc in one direction or another.

Then, the gaps are also filled with polyurethane foam and left until the composition has completely hardened. After this, the door is installed on the hinges on the frame.

Now all that remains is to carry out the final step - install the platbands.

The connection of the platbands at the corners of the door can also be of two types - end-to-end (used very rarely) or at an angle of 45 degrees. Correct angle on the facing panels is also cut out using a miter box, and they are precisely adjusted to each other.

It should be noted that you can save yourself from unnecessary problems with fitting the frame and the door to it, ordering the entire set as an assembly, that is, with hinges and a lock already installed, as well as a leaf fixed in the door jamb. Before making a purchase, you need to take exact measurements from the old set, and using them you can make an individual order or purchase a ready-made model. The kit usually includes platbands of the required height and with correctly fitted connections.

You need to know that it is quite difficult to independently adjust all the elements of a door without proper experience, and a mistake made in this matter is sometimes very difficult to correct.
