Useful video

Finishing the bathroom should be durable and resistant to moisture and evoke pleasant emotions. What materials to choose so that the result pleases - let's understand in more detail.

Tiled materials - an ideal option at all times

When choosing finishing materials for the bathroom, it is important to be guided by several rules. Firstly, they must be not only moisture-resistant, but also waterproof. Some people do not really distinguish between these concepts, but in fact they are different. Moisture resistant materials are used in places where there is no constant contact with water. They are successfully used in rooms with high humidity, but they will not be able to resist if they are constantly in contact with water. In such cases, it is necessary to use a waterproof finish that is "friendly" with water.

One of the finishing options is natural stone tiles, which we recommend buying and ordering installation at Atlant Granit (https://atlantgranit.ru/)

Advice. No matter how expensive and cutting-edge material is chosen, without high-quality surface preparation and proper waterproofing, all efforts will be in vain.

The tile occupies a leading share in the market of finishing materials for bathrooms. She gained such popularity due to her qualities. It is easy to install and can be easily cleaned even with abrasive materials. And if you look at the assortment of goods on the shelves of stores, then everyone will definitely find for themselves the option that can satisfy their taste for one hundred percent. The tile looks great both on its own and in combination with other finishing materials - from mosaics to ordinary paint and even bare concrete.

With a variety of textures and color solutions, the tile is not only able to give aesthetic pleasure, but also perfectly protects the walls of the room from moisture. The tile is easy to care for - it can be cleaned perfectly with powder and liquid cleaners. The tile retains its original appearance for many years, while remaining durable and practical. Among the shortcomings of the material, one can only single out its low thermal conductivity (therefore, it is desirable to equip the "warm floor" system) and the price (high-quality tiles cost a lot of money, and designer collections are generally not available to anyone).

Mosaic can serve as an alternative to tiles, which today is made of stone, glass, ceramics and other artificial and natural materials. The material is able to hide small irregularities of the walls, and this helps to save on their alignment. The process of laying a mosaic is quite complicated, so it is worth entrusting this work to professionals. A big plus of using mosaic is that it can be laid on any surface - not only straight lines, but also those with roundings and bends.

With this material, you can create truly unique patterns. Mosaic is very durable, so not only walls, countertops, but also the floor are lined with it. Among the shortcomings of the mosaic canvas, it is worth mentioning first of all its cost - it is much higher than tiles and porcelain stoneware. If you choose wrong color accents, then with a long stay in the room, the eyes may begin to ripple. For laying mosaics, special compositions are required, especially when it comes to glass and transparent versions. Caring for such a finish is simple - it does not require a special approach.

Until recently, porcelain stoneware was used exclusively for laying on the floor, but today this material is more and more common. It is very durable and has a large size, which allows you to reduce the time of repair work. Porcelain tile retains a presentable appearance for a long time, regardless of the conditions in which it is operated and what chemicals fall on its surface. In terms of composition, it is identical to ordinary facing tiles, however, during its production, more pressure and temperature are used, which makes this material so wear-resistant. Its disadvantage can be considered a significant weight and the use of special mixed compositions for cladding. In addition, it becomes excessively slippery when water gets on it, so before laying it on the floor in the bathroom, you should carefully weigh the pros and cons.

Advice. For reliable waterproofing walls, use special fugues designed for wet rooms for between tiled materials!

Natural materials in bathroom decoration

Quite expensive, but no less popular is natural or natural finish. artificial stone. Rooms finished with this material look great, but still it is more suitable for spacious bathrooms than standard bathrooms with standard panels. When choosing natural stone, entrust the work of laying it to a professional, because this is the only way to achieve truly royal interiors. Natural stone is good because it can not only veneer the surface, it is suitable for the manufacture of countertops, sinks and bathtubs themselves.

Thanks to this, it is possible to create unique interior.However, natural stone also has its drawbacks:

  • When in contact with water, it becomes slippery, so options such as marble and granite are best used in wall decoration or roughened their surface when laying on the floor. Travertine is ideal for flooring because it does not become slippery when wet or splashed with soap.
  • The stone is susceptible to rust, so when tiling a bathroom with it, it is worth Special attention devote to plumbing.
  • The price of the material is very high, but once the investment is more than paid off, since such an interior does not require alterations.
  • Having a porous structure, natural stone needs constant protection with water-repellent impregnations.

Another natural material that can be used in bathroom decoration is wood. Such interiors are quite rare, especially in city apartments, but do not be afraid to use natural wood in wet areas. For cladding, of course, pine or spruce is not suitable, but larch, teak or cedar will be just right. Wood is not only an environmentally friendly material. It allows the walls to breathe, being responsible for the microclimate in the room. Additional processing of wood with paints and varnishes and water-repellent impregnations will not be superfluous.

In some cases, you can use oil (teak, tung, Danish), but this impregnation must be repeated monthly, otherwise the tree will darken, while it is enough to repeat the varnish coating once every five years. But impregnation with oil is eco-friendly and natural. When buying paint and varnish coatings, it is important to pay attention to the possibility of their use indoors, since many of them add special compounds to control insects, the use of which is only allowed outdoors.

It is forbidden to mount wooden coverings close to the wall - it is necessary to equip the ventilation gap.

Decorative plaster as an option for finishing the bathroom

Many may argue that such a finish is inappropriate in wet areas. This statement has a rational grain, but not when it comes to such types of plaster as:

  • Venetian;
  • plaster;
  • facade;
  • sanitizing.

These types have proven themselves in the decoration of wet rooms. They breathe well, and do not allow moisture to penetrate inside the walls. Almost all options, with the exception of the Venetian, are easy to apply. With their help, you can create smooth and embossed surfaces, in addition, they are perfectly tinted in the desired color. With good adhesion, they can be applied to any surface.

The advantages of using plaster in the bathroom include its vapor permeability. Due to this, moisture accumulates on the surface, and this prevents the development of mold and mildew. The material is durable and easy to maintain. Of the shortcomings, it can only be noted that before applying decorative plaster it is necessary to qualitatively prepare the rough surface - to make waterproofing so that the finish lasts a long time.

Wallpaper - what kind to prefer for the bathroom

Surprisingly, wallpaper is an option that can be safely used in wet areas. This finish is suitable for those who are not accustomed to long monotony. If the tiles are laid on the walls for decades, then the wallpaper can be changed at least every year, creating a new and unique interior. The main point that must be taken into account when finishing the surface is the mandatory arrangement of high-quality ventilation and waterproofing, as well as the treatment of walls with antiseptic agents before pasting.

When choosing, it is necessary to give preference to a product that has a special designation on the label - three waves. This means that the wallpaper can be washed and glued in damp rooms. And if you find a wallpaper where, in addition to three lines, a brush is also drawn, then you can safely purchase them for wall cladding in the bathroom, since they are classified as "super washable". You should immediately abandon simple paper wallpapers and choose canvases with vinyl top layer which does not allow moisture to pass through. For pasting, it is worth using special adhesive mixtures, which include substances that prevent the growth of mold and fungus.

In particularly wet areas where there is constant contact with water - a bathroom and a washbasin - it is still recommended to use a traditional tile finish or cover the wallpaper with special tempered glass.

Glass fiber is another option that can be used to decorate the bathroom. They are made from dolomite, quartz sand and soda, therefore they are an environmentally friendly material. They are breathable and moisture resistant at the same time. These characteristics make them an excellent finishing material. During operation, they do not lose their qualities, in addition, they can be covered with several layers of paint. The only thing to consider when buying is the quality of the canvas. Do not buy too cheap options, they are not able to last a long time.

You can opt for liquid wallpaper. This is a kind of analogue of decorative plaster. They are composed of natural ingredients, the connecting element for which is a special glue. The only drawback of such a coating is the high cost of the material, but it has much more advantages. They don't require perfect surface for application - this can already save money. They are maintainable - just cut out the damaged piece and apply fresh material in its place. Liquid wallpaper does not accumulate dust and has good sound and heat insulation.

Plastic panels - two options for creating a hydrobarrier

One of the most popular ways to finish bathrooms is installation. plastic panels. Plastic is non-hydroscopic, so it tolerates contact with water perfectly. During installation, there is no need for waterproofing the walls, which takes a considerable amount of money and effort. It is easy to take care of such material, it does not shrink and is resistant to aggressive environments, besides, there are a large number of stylistic solutions on the market. affordable price. Plastic panels are what you can use to sheathe the bathroom yourself when you need to quickly install, and also as an option for temporary cladding.

Panels can be fixed in two ways. In the first case, it is purchased and the panels are glued directly to the wall, which must first be leveled. In the second option, it is necessary to build a special or treated wood with antiseptics. In this case, there is no need to level the surface and all communications can be hidden behind the cladding. The disadvantage of plastic panels can be called low mechanical resistance and the fact that during the arrangement the useful area of \u200b\u200bthe room is eaten up due to the arrangement of the mounting frame.

If you decide to finish the bathroom with plastic panels, then it is necessary to provide belts on which heavy objects will subsequently be hung - mirrors, shelves, etc.

Paint - a quick way to transform the interior

Surface painting - as they say, "cheap and cheerful." And one cannot but agree with this statement. Firstly, the use of modern materials allows you to reliably protect the walls from moisture and the formation of fungus. Secondly, by combining different colors, you can achieve unusual effects. Today, no one uses oil paints, as was done in the days of our parents. They were replaced by modern paints and varnishes, which are environmentally friendly and wear-resistant:

  • latex;
  • acrylic;
  • water-based.

The advantage of using paints is obvious. Painting the walls does not take much time, it can be done independently, and it is much easier to do this than replacing the tiles in the bathroom. You can change the color of the walls at any time at will.

Such an interior can never be called banal and can be updated as soon as the soul desires something new. If on the shelves shopping centers there is no necessary shade, then you can always create it personally by adding the desired color. The painted surface is wear-resistant, easy to care for and does not require application. special means.

Specialization: Capital construction works(laying the foundation, erecting walls, constructing the roof, etc.). Internal construction works (laying of internal communications, rough and fine finishing). Hobbies: mobile communication, high technologies, computer equipment, programming.

Recently, a friend of mine asked me to help her renovate her apartment. But if there were no problems with the design of the entire dwelling, then she herself could not decide on the appearance of the sanitary facilities. Especially when it comes to bathroom walls.

Before coming to a final decision, together we went through a huge number of design options, including combined bathrooms. To save you from sleepless nights and the torment of choice, I decided to tell you what it is better to make the walls in the bathroom from (how to choose the right material color), and how the demolition of the wall between the bathroom-toilet affects the interior of the room.

Bathroom wall colors

I want to start the conversation with how to choose the right color for the walls for the bathroom. After all, not only the visual perception of this room depends on it, but also the convenience in performing hygiene procedures.

Usually when choosing a shade for decoration various surfaces in the sanitary room, people are guided by their own taste and sense of beauty. However, there are several general rules which I highly recommend sticking to.

The most important points are:

  1. The bathroom is a room with high level humidity. Therefore, the color for its design must be chosen so that in the end it does not look raw and dank (although in fact this may not be the case). The visual perception of the room affects comfort no less than other factors.
  2. Typically, sanitary facilities are not spacious. Therefore, you need to do your best to visually expand the room. To do this, I recommend using light shades and glossy surfaces (but it is important not to overdo it, as too much gloss is perceived negatively by many).
  3. A bathroom is a functional room in which people perform hygiene procedures, including doing their hair, applying cosmetics, shaving, and so on. Therefore, the colors of the walls need to be shaved so that there is a lot of light. This is achieved by adjusting the saturation of the colors used.
  4. If the bathroom will be used not only as a place for washing, but also as a home spa, it is better to choose the color and pattern of the walls so that it soothes and allows you to relax, and not set you up in an aggressive way.

I can not tell you about all the possible colors and shades, so I will focus only on the most popular. I will describe them taking into account the possible impact on a person. So let's get started:

  1. Red color. Capable of increasing vital energy and tone. After visiting the bathroom, decorated in red, according to psychologists, a person receives a charge of vitality and is more prone to action.

  1. Orange color. It is a strong antidepressant and has a relaxing effect. orange walls make a person a little happier and help to cope with constant stress. Taking a jacuzzi bath in such a room, you can abstract from current problems and have a good rest.

  1. Yellow. Unlike the previous one, it acts excitingly. Yellow and its shades increase the nervousness of people, lead them into a state of tension and confusion. In addition, such coloring visually constrains the space and distorts the perspective, so it looks organic only in spacious rooms.

  1. Green color. Synonymous with confidence, vivacity and stability. A green-style bathroom enhances vitality, allows you to gather your thoughts and stabilize your emotional state.

  1. Turquoise. It has a calming effect and helps relieve accumulated stress. Reduces irritation, stimulates the vitality of a person and invigorates him. Bathroom decorated in turquoise tones creates a sense of security.

  1. Blue color. Intense blue hue allows you to relax. In the blue bathroom it is good to take a jacuzzi bath, enjoying water and air massage. After such relaxation, the vital forces soar to unprecedented heights.

  1. Purple. Walls of purple shades help to cope with stress and increase a person's self-confidence.

  1. Grey colour. This is a neutral shade that allows you to calm your nerves, prevent irritability and nervous breakdowns. It will help you get in a positive mood. Gray color goes well with other shades, so it helps to create a truly extraordinary design of a sanitary room.

  1. Black color. This coloring of the walls has a depressing effect on the psyche, and I do not recommend using this color on your own. It is better to combine it with others, using it as an additional one.

Now more specifically about color palette. First of all, when choosing a color, you need to consider the location of the bathroom in the apartment. If it is adjacent to the bedroom, then its style should match the design of this room. In the case when the plumbing room is common to all the inhabitants of an apartment or house, you can arrange it as you like.

However, it is still better to take into account the combination of designs. For example, if other rooms are decorated in country style, then paint the walls in an ultra-modern purple hue ridiculous to say the least. And vice versa.

The combination of colors is also important. There are two options:

  1. Monochrome interior. One color is used to paint the walls. Furniture and plumbing fixtures are matched to match it, but in order not to make the bathroom boring, you need to vary the shades and saturation. Usually there should be three degrees of the same color:
  • weak - for most surfaces;
  • strong - for painting furniture and plumbing fixtures;
  • saturated - for some accents.
  1. Multicolored interior. Usually three or more colors are used, but I do not recommend taking more than six (of course, if you do not paint the walls).

In addition to the above, I advise you to pay attention to the color and size of interior items in the bathroom. If the room is small, it is better to buy small-sized furniture, painted in light colors - white, cream, pastel, and so on. Bright and large furniture, including natural wood, will look spectacular only in spacious bathrooms.

When choosing the color of furniture, you need to consider what the floor is covered with. Furnishings can match in color or walls or floor. But not both at the same time.

Otherwise, everything depends only on your taste and the wishes of loved ones who live in the same apartment (house) with you. And no universal instruction, no matter how complete it may be, will not help here.

Demolition of the partition

One of important aspects when designing the walls in the bathroom, there is a partition between this room and the toilet. I recommended to my relative to break the wall between the bathroom and the toilet. Personally, in my opinion, this solution is optimal for cramped bathrooms, since in the end you get a comfortable room where, in addition to the bathroom and the toilet, washing machine and other necessary furniture.

My relative did not want to dismantle the wall, justifying this by the fact that she does not want to contemplate the toilet while doing morning makeup. However, there is a very elegant and ergonomic solution to this issue - a small false wall or a low screen, which is easy to do with your own hands.

In my personal experience, I have come across the following options:

  1. Glass partitions. I think this is one of the best zoning methods, because transparent material allows you to separate the toilet from the bathroom, but at the same time does not visually reduce the space. The mirror wall looks great. The design can be both permanent and temporary (portable, folding, and so on).

  1. Plasterboard partitions. With the help of drywall sheets installed on the frame, it is possible to construct a partition of any size, shape and configuration. The double design proved to be excellent, inside which it is easy to hide plumbing and electrical wiring. Concerning decorative finishes, then here possible options limited only by your imagination, as anything is glued to the GKL.

  1. Plastic partitions. They can also be permanent or temporary. Often, for the construction of plastic partitions, I used polycarbonate (plexiglass). It turns out a transparent wall, which, unlike glass, is less heavy and fragile. Yes, and this design is much cheaper. But with careless operation, the surface of the polycarbonate is covered with scratches and loses its transparency.

I want to warn you right away that dismantling the partition is a very noisy and dirty business. You will definitely need an oilcloth or other similar material to protect the rest of the home from dust and dirt.

In addition, when planning the dismantling or transfer of the partition, it is necessary to take into account the following nuances:

  1. Does not require coordination with the housing office or other similar organization redevelopment, which does not lead to an increase in the total area of sanitary facilities. Also, without a technical project, you can transfer the location of plumbing fixtures without increasing their total number.
  2. If the dimensions of the bathroom and toilet increase after redevelopment (but not at the expense of the kitchen, this is prohibited) or you plan to install an additional appliance (bidet, shower cabin, etc.), such actions require preliminary preparation and approval of the engineering project.
  3. During demolition, it is necessary to check that the partition is not load-bearing. Otherwise, there can be no question of any dismantling.
  4. Cannot be dismantled or resized engineering communications common use. In particular, it is forbidden to dismantle or reduce the common ventilation duct of an apartment building, which is usually located at one of the walls of the sanitary room.

Wall finishing materials

And finally, I want to talk about the materials that can be used for wall decoration in the bathroom. They are shown in the diagram below:

Of course, this is not a complete list, but I decided to focus only on popular options, indicating their advantages and disadvantages.

Method 1. Tile

The classic option for decorating a bathroom is tile, that is, ceramic tiles. This material is very popular and is the undisputed leader not only in our country, but throughout the world. And all because it has many advantages:

  1. Various appearance. Now on sale you can find tiles painted in all possible colors and shades. In addition, decorative elements, frieze, patterns, texture and so on help to diversify the design of the walls in the bathroom. You can choose the design that suits you and the tile layout option using a computer program (I once did a review of such applications, you can read it if you are interested).
  2. Durability. Subject to the technology of laying ceramic tiles, it can last so long that it becomes morally obsolete, but at the same time it will not change its appearance and specifications. Yes, ceramics can crack on impact, but the damaged area is easy to repair.
  3. Hygiene. Ceramic tiles have a very dense decorative surface, which is practically not contaminated during operation. In any case, stains and dirt from the walls can be easily removed with a regular foam sponge and household detergent.
  4. Strength. The tile well maintains considerable external impact. Scratches do not appear on the surface of ceramics, so it is often used even for wall decoration in public sanitary facilities, which are visited by a large number of people.
  5. Antiseptic. The material is not subject to biocorrosion, mold and fungi do not develop on its surface, which spoil the appearance of the room and often cause serious diseases. The only danger is the appearance of microorganisms in the seams. However, this can be avoided by treating gaps with antiseptics.
  6. Versatility. The material can be used to decorate not only walls, but also. Yes, what is there to say tile some are even glued to the ceiling, if required design decision. However, in the latter case, you need to use a special high-strength adhesive.

It is often only the high price of the material and the difficulty of installing tiles on the surfaces to be decorated that make this type of bathroom decoration abandon. The cladding technology is described in detail in my articles on this site. Having familiarized yourself with them, I think you will successfully overcome all difficulties.

Method 2. Paint

Painting the walls in the bathroom - the most cheap way decorating these surfaces. However, only if the walls of the room have already been carefully leveled, plastered and puttied. Otherwise, the complexity of the operations listed above will most likely force you to abandon this finishing option, and the cost will not please you.

Don't think that by painting I mean painting bathroom walls green or blue. oil paint, which is well known to our grandparents, who received apartments in the middle of the last century.

Now manufacturers of finishing materials produce durable and attractive-looking coloring compositions that are specifically designed for use in the specific microclimate of the bathroom, which is characterized by high humidity and significant temperature fluctuations.

We have already talked about the choice of colors and shades, I can only say that the best option for the bathroom, in my opinion, is silicone paint, but it costs a lot. For those who want to save money, I can advise latex water-dispersion paint, which is not washed off with water and withstands significant mechanical stress.

I especially want to highlight such a property of paint as maintainability. If any part of the wall is dirty or scratched, it is enough just to touch it up to restore its former splendor. In the case of a broken tile, there would be almost an order of magnitude more trouble.

Method 3. Wallpaper

This is another way to decorate the walls in the bathroom for lovers of budget solutions. Wallpaper, like paint, requires preliminary preparation of the base - leveling with putty and careful grinding. Otherwise, all wall defects will appear through the wallpaper and spoil the appearance of the room.

Naturally, not used for finishing the bathroom. common materials paper-based, and special ones that do not deteriorate in humid air and tolerate frequent temperature changes well.

To decorate the bathroom, in my opinion, you can use several types of wallpaper, which are described in the table below:

Variety Characteristic
washable The cheapest finishing option. These wallpapers are protected on top with a waterproof film that prevents water from penetrating into the material. They are easy to clean from dust, but are not durable and do not withstand direct contact with water. They cannot be pasted over surfaces that get water from a bath or shower.
Vinyl Perfect for decorating bathrooms. Well tolerated not only water vapor, but also direct contact with liquid, and multiple. The disadvantage of this type of finish is a rather high cost.
Self-adhesive A film whose front surface is decorated with a pattern or pattern, and the back is covered with an adhesive composition, thanks to which the material is attached to the walls. Self-adhesive wallpapers are quite thin and through them cracks and irregularities of enclosing structures are clearly visible.
Glass fiber Excellent finishing material based on fiberglass. Produced in white with a textured surface. After gluing, they can be painted in any color (or even several). Due to the pattern on the surface, the walls of the bathroom acquire a rather curious appearance. Fiberglass can withstand significant mechanical stress, has a long service life and is not damaged by water. The advantage is that it can be repainted many times, refreshing the design of the bathroom.
Wall mural One of the ways to design a bathroom in a unique style. Modern wallpapers have nothing to do with products manufactured during the Soviet era. Modern images are striking in their clarity and richness. The main thing is to choose a picture so that it matches the interior of the plumbing room.

Separately, I want to mention liquid wallpaper. They are a dry composition (like putty), which is mixed with water and applied to the walls with a spatula. Due to the presence of mineral (for example, mica) and fibrous (cellulose) additives, they give the walls an unusual appearance. They are called wallpaper only because, after hardening, they partially resemble this material.

I have already said about the minuses - this is the need to prepare the walls.

Method 4. Plastic

But plastic panels are just a budget solution for those who cannot or do not want to resort to leveling the walls with beacon plaster and subsequent puttying. Installing slats on the crate allows you to beautifully decorate the bathroom without significant financial, labor and time costs.

I can tell you with full confidence that if you cannot lay tiles, and the curvature of the walls does not allow wallpapering, feel free to choose plastic panels, as they have many advantages:

  1. Ease of installation. Plastic can be simply glued to the walls polyurethane adhesive or mount on a crate. The latter option is more universal, so I advise you to resort to it.
  2. A wide assortment. There are a large number of plastic lamellas on sale, painted in different colors and covered with various patterns and patterns. Moreover, you can choose a material that imitates tiles, marble, wild stone or wood.
  3. Moisture resistance. Plastic does not lose its characteristics with constant use in air with a high content of water vapor. The slats can be in contact with the liquid for a long time, so they can finish wall sections located directly near the shower and bath. Thanks to special locks, the cladding parts fit together completely hermetically, preventing moisture from penetrating into the false wall.
  4. Heat resistance. The cladding, despite the fact that it is made of polymer, does not change its size and color depending on the air temperature in the room. But as light sources it is better to use LED lights, since incandescent lamps can deform the lamellas.
  5. Strength. Plastic panels are well tolerated by mechanical stress, including impact. If the distance between the supporting elements of the frame is no more than 50 cm, then the details decorative design will not break, even if a person leans on the wall.
  6. Environmental friendliness. Facing slats do not harm human health, as they have a minimum level of emission of harmful chemical compounds.
  7. Possibility to hide pipes and level walls. If you install plastic panels on the walls, then a false wall is formed and in the free space between the cladding and the enclosing structure, you can easily hide water and sewer pipes, electrical cables and ventilation ducts. In the case of wallpaper or tiles, the walls would have to be ditched.
  8. Antiseptic. Plastic panels are not subject to corrosion, so the appearance of mold and fungus is not to be feared. However, microorganisms can start inside, on the enclosing walls. To avoid such a problem, I recommend performing an antiseptic treatment of the surfaces of the walls, ceiling and floor of the bathroom before facing.

To be honest, I can’t even single out any significant shortcomings that are worth mentioning within the framework of this article. If you have already made up your mind to use them, then I can advise you to read one of my articles, which tells how to install plastic on bathroom walls.

However, there is a truly universal way to finish the walls in the bathroom - drywall sheets. It is about them that we will discuss further.

Method 5. Drywall

Plasterboard sheets are a versatile finishing material that can be used to decorate any room. However, in rooms with high humidity, which include the bathroom, it is necessary to use special plasterboards, during the production of which special substances are added to the gypsum that repel water.

Moisture resistant drywall is different from the usual in green cardboard sheets that protect the gypsum layer.

The nuance of this finishing method is that only a rough finish is performed using the material in question:

  • leveling surfaces, including walls;
  • arrangement of multi-level structures of complex shape;
  • installation of partitions, including decorative ones;
  • construction of niches, ledges and other complex architectural elements.

Personally, I often made shelves and countertops in the bathroom using drywall. Several of my articles describe how drywall can be used to make a compact box that hides pipes and risers indoors.

However, after installing drywall, it still needs to be decorated with something - tiles, wallpaper, paint, and so on. Because it is impossible to call this material decorative.

Summary

I hope the above information will help you decide on the design of the bathroom. As a bonus, I suggest watching the video in this article, which tells how to tear down the wall between the bathroom and the toilet.

You can leave your opinion on the use of certain options for finishing the sanitary room in the comments. I'm especially interested in what you think about painted walls in the bathroom? After all, with certain skills, you can turn a boring room into a masterpiece of interior design!

How to choose the right materials for wall decoration in the bathroom to make the room beautiful, safe and easy to clean? What will be able to permanently withstand the influence of moisture, vapors, temperature changes and the aggressive effects of detergents? In this article, we'll take a look at 10 materials you can use to style your bathroom and create a truly classy ambiance.

1. Ceramic tiles

Let's start with the classics! Most often, ceramic tiles are chosen for wall decoration in the bathroom. It is produced in a variety of shapes, types and colors. It can be rectangular, square, hexagonal, glossy, matte, with a texture or with a special decorative application. List possible characteristics can be long.

Manufacturers make every effort to satisfy any needs of customers. For example, many produce tiles in series. Thanks to this, you can choose the cladding for walls, floors and decorative elements from one set. It will all be made in the same style, and all its colors will be perfectly combined with each other.

An interesting design solution can be a combination of plain and colored coatings. For example, white with a patchwork pattern. Also, a Mediterranean or other authentic pattern is perfectly combined with white ceramic tiles, which sets the room in a certain mood.

A combination of white and wood color will look very relevant. This direction came to us from eco-design. This design removes the feeling of sterility that can occur in a pure white bathroom.

When choosing ceramic products, mosaic deserves special attention. This is not the easiest material to install, but the result will be worth the effort. With these miniature tiles, you can create a beautiful and sophisticated design for your shower area and sink. In addition, with the help of specially marked sets, you can depict small drawings or even full-fledged paintings in the bathroom.

2. Paint

No less popular method of finishing the walls in the bathroom is painting. It is usually recommended to use water-based acrylic or semi-gloss acrylic copolymer paint. When choosing, read the instructions on the package. It usually contains detailed description material indicating the degree of resistance to moisture, as well as to detergents and cleaning agents.

Compared to various tiles, paint is a more affordable material. Plus, it's much easier to apply. However, it must be taken into account that such processing is still subject to some negative influence of humidity. Therefore, it is better to use it or combined combination with other finishing materials, or if the plumbing is located so that the walls will not have constant contact with water.

3. Decorative stone

Thanks to the trend towards interior design with natural materials, more and more often stone is used for wall decoration in the bathroom. Wherein natural material and its proper installation is quite an expensive pleasure that not every homeowner can afford.

As an alternative, manufacturers began to produce a high-quality artificial substitute. Visually, it is very similar to natural raw materials. In addition, unlike real stone, artificial stone has a very small weight and is much easier to lay.

With regard to design, it is worth considering that an overabundance of such expressive materials can negatively affect the overall interior of the bathroom, especially if the room is small. It is better to decorate with stone only part of the room or several small areas. For example, you can make one contrasting wall or lay out a stone mold for the bathroom and sink.

With a combined design, this type of finish is best combined with painting, plaster or ceramic tiles. But depending on your project, other options are possible.

4. Wood

Like stone, wood has become increasingly used in bathroom decor thanks to the trend towards natural materials. But in order to perform such wall decoration, the wood must first be carefully prepared with the help of special tools. You must be sure that the boards will not rot in a couple of years and you will not have to make repeated repairs.

Wood in the bathroom is most often used as a contrasting material for decorating one wall or some specific areas - the washbasin area, cabinets and others.

If you are not ready to use natural material, you can always choose instead artificial variant. It can completely recreate the look of wood or just have a woody pattern.

5. Decorative plaster

Another non-standard material for wall decoration in the bathroom is plaster. It can be applied if the bath is partially finished with tiles or other moisture-resistant material, and also if the plumbing is not adjacent to the walls.

In order to protect such a finish from negative factors, it must be coated with a special protective varnish or other means of a similar effect.

With the help of decorative plaster, you can create a soft and pleasant design in the Scandinavian style. It can also be designed as a somewhat rough surface with a pronounced embossed texture - this option is perfect for decorating a loft-style bathroom.

6. Brick

Initially not intended for wall decoration in the bathroom, brick requires careful treatment with protective and antiseptic agents.

It is advisable not to place this material in places close to water. Rather, it should become just a design element - with its help you can decorate certain parts of the room, make contrasting walls in the room or decorate niches.

The slightly sloppy look that comes with using bricks is great for creating scandinavian style and loft style. And when painting White color- you can get interesting classic version, provence or shabby chic.

7. Mirror tiles

If you have a small bathroom and would like to visually enlarge it, then consider using mirrored tiles. It is applied in the same way as ceramic, but you need to be a little more careful with it, as it is a more fragile material.

Of course, it makes no sense to make a completely mirrored room - usually tiles are applied either in sections, or only on one of the walls. You also need to understand that this type of design requires complex care - it is better to place such inserts where it is unlikely that moisture will get into them, otherwise you will have to constantly rub them.

When choosing a tile size, it is worth considering that large options can only be used in large bathrooms. They do not visually expand, but on the contrary, they will hide the space a little. For a small bathroom, a medium or small size material is better suited. In addition, you can purchase a mirror mosaic. It can be used as an independent design element, as well as as part of a ceramic or glass mosaic.

8. Wallpaper

No matter how unexpected it may sound, but the decoration of the walls in the bathroom can also be done with the help of wallpaper. You just need to choose those types that resist moisture well - vinyl or acrylic.

In a small room, you can stick photo wallpapers on one of the walls. Depending on the pattern, they can give the room a certain stylistic effect. For example, a landscape will create a sense of perspective into the distance, bright flowers will cheer you up, and a warm pattern in pastel colors will add a sense of comfort.

But, despite the relative water resistance, when using wallpaper in the bathroom, you should always remember that if liquid gets into the junction of two canvases, then gradually they can begin to move away from the walls.

9. Glass tiles

Relatively recently, glass tiles have become another popular material for walls in the bathroom. This is a fairly strong and safe coating, which is made of tempered glass. It holds up well to cleaning. detergents, and any other types of aggressive influence.

Glass tiles are produced in different sizes, from the smallest to the largest plates. It may have different colors or patterns. In addition, this material is also available in the form of a mosaic.

Since glass trim is not afraid of moisture, it can be placed in any part of the bathroom, including in the shower area or near the bathtub where water flows.

10. Marble

One of the most beautiful and expensive bathroom materials is marble. In addition to its external attractiveness, it also has a couple of features for which it is better to prepare in advance. In the future, this will help to properly monitor its condition and preserve its natural beauty for as long as possible.

The fact is that this stone can absorb substances that fall on it in a small amount. This means that if you use any colored hygiene products and they get on the stove, indelible stains may appear on it. In addition, aggressive detergents can harm it.

In other words, marble is a “living” stone that actively interacts with the surrounding substances and can change under their influence.

Video: Wall decoration in the bathroom - Beautiful ideas

Even the ancient Romans were sure that the place where a person washes should be special. They decorated their baths, as baths were called at that time, like luxurious palaces. Centuries have passed, but the attitude to the rooms for hygiene procedures has changed little. Every owner of a house or apartment wants to make his bathroom not only as functional as possible, but also beautiful.

In the process of developing a design project, it is important not only to choose the design and decor, but also to choose the right materials for wall decoration in the bathroom. Properly selected wall covering will last a very long time and will be able to maintain an attractive appearance.

There is an opinion that it is simply impossible to create an unusual and interesting interior in a bathroom. Especially if the room has small size. Therefore, most often the owners listen to the recommendations of designers and decorate the bathroom in the same style as the rest of the apartment or house. The result is often not the best.

The place where a person performs hygiene procedures should be not only functional, but also beautiful.

And this is not at all because some stylistic miscalculations are being made. The bathroom requires a special approach. Here you can implement original ideas and experiments. Fenced off from living space interior door, the room can be bright, original and stylish.

And first of all, you need to think about finishing materials. It is not true that the best choice is ceramic tiles. There can be a lot of options. However, before proceeding with their choice, you need to understand that the bathroom is a room with special conditions, therefore, all coatings used for finishing should be:

  • resistant to significant temperature changes and high humidity;
  • environmentally friendly;
  • easy to care for and hygienic;
  • durable.

The last requirement, at first glance, is not directly related to the special conditions of the bathroom. However, you need to understand that the repair in the bathroom is more complex and time-consuming than in any other room. Therefore, you should strive to make it as rare as possible.

In addition, modern plumbing fixtures have a long service life, so they need the same durable frame.

How can you decorate the walls of the bathroom?

There are a lot of finishing options, for every taste and, of course, for every budget. Consider the advantages and disadvantages of several of them.

Option #1 - ceramic tiles

So called plates of various shapes and sizes, made of baked clay. Tiles are made by pressing a homogeneous crushed mixture and subsequent firing in ovens at a temperature of about 1200C. There are types of ceramics:

  • Glazed tiles. Additionally, it is covered with a special transparent layer, which not only protects the ceramic plate, but also gives it a more attractive appearance.
  • Unglazed cladding. The protective layer is missing. The tile is distinguished by the natural structure of the material and an attractive natural texture. It can be considered conditionally suitable for decorating wet rooms.

The design of ceramic tiles can be very different. In addition to the traditional square and rectangular cladding of various sizes, more interesting plate shapes are produced: hexagons, triangles, and even circles and ovals. The colors and textures of the tiles are also varied.

Models with all kinds of inserts made of metal, mirror or stone are interesting. Manufacturers offer tile collections that include basic cladding and decor: borders and plates, decorated with various patterns and motifs.

The clear advantages of ceramics include:

  • high wear resistance;
  • resistance to aggressive compounds, including detergents;
  • environmental safety;
  • high resistance to the damaging effects of moisture;
  • hygiene and ease of care;
  • maintainability, damaged tiles can be easily replaced;
  • resistance to toxic substances and fire.

The main disadvantage of any ceramics can be considered the complexity of installation, before which it will be necessary to carry out laborious work to prepare the surface of the walls for cladding.

The manufacturer offers collections of ceramic tiles, in which the main cladding and decor have already been selected. Using such a collection, even a non-professional can create an attractive design.

Peculiarities finishing material are such that it can only be laid on a completely leveled, dry, primed base with a special compound. The cladding process is also complicated and requires the involvement of specialists. It is almost impossible for a person without experience to lay tiles on walls with high quality.

In addition, the ceramic surface is always cool to the touch, so leaning against such a wall is not very pleasant. The material belongs to the category of brittle and fragile, which complicates the transportation and laying of tiles. The cost of cladding depends on the quality and the manufacturer.

On sale you can find both elite models belonging to the high price category, as well as quite budget material. Thus, a cladding that is acceptable in terms of cost and quality, if desired, can be found without much difficulty.

Option #2 - self-adhesive film

basis self-adhesive film is polyvinyl chloride. A decorative pattern is applied on the front side of the coating, on the opposite side there is a layer of glue that holds the material on the surface. It is covered with a protective layer of paper.

To apply the film on the wall, you need to very carefully and gradually remove the protective layer, while straightening and pressing the vinyl to the base. Such a film is perfectly fixed on plastic, wood, glass, plasterboard and metal surfaces.

There are many varieties of self-adhesive film available. On sale you can find a single-color coating, glossy or matte, mirror, with a 3D effect or metallized.

Interesting films imitating various materials: fabric, mosaic, tile, wood, cork and the like. The benefits of vinyl film include:

  • high tensile and fracture strength;
  • speed and ease of installation;
  • sufficiently high wear resistance, which allows the material to serve at least 5 years;
  • a large selection of colors and textures;
  • resistance to high humidity;
  • ease of care, stains are removed with soapy water;
  • the pattern applied to the film does not fade for a long time and does not deteriorate from direct sunlight.

Self-adhesive film is available in the most different designs. Using this material, you can quickly and inexpensively create an exclusive design for your bathroom.

The installation of the coating is extremely simple, however, before starting it, it is necessary to prepare the base very well, since everything, even the smallest cracks and irregularities, will be clearly visible.

Option #3 - paint

Painted bathroom walls are becoming popular again thanks to the variety of modern paint formulations. For painting, experts recommend using special paints:

  • Acrylic. It is made on the basis of acrylic polymer, to which titanium dioxide and marble chips are added. The composition forms a durable film on the painted surface with microscopic pores, giving the walls the ability to "breathe".
  • Latex. Its base is latex acrylate, which retains its original appearance for a long time. The composition withstands numerous wet cleanings using chemicals.
  • Silicone. Combines the advantages of the previous options. Does not allow microorganisms to multiply, is applied to any surface, including brick, concrete slab and plaster. Not sensitive to temperature extremes and high humidity.
  • silicate. Its basis is liquid glass mixed with silicon and resin. To give the composition the desired color, oxides of various metals are added to it. Resistant to high humidity and temperature. Before applying to the wall, the base must be primed with a special solution.

The advantage of painting walls is the possibility self-fulfillment works, while their quality directly depends on the performer. If desired, you can use various combinations of colors, which allows you to create an original interior design at low cost.

The disadvantages include the need for careful preparation of the base before painting.

Painted bathroom walls are a practical solution. For painting, we choose special compositions designed for rooms with high humidity.

Option #4 - plastic panels

Modern plastic panels are made of polyvinyl chloride, which is completely safe for human health. When choosing a material for finishing a bathroom, you need to consider that there are two types of such panels. One of them is designed for decorating the ceiling, and the second for the walls.

It is important to choose the right lamellas, since wall lamellas differ from ceiling lamellas in greater strength, resistance to mechanical damage, and less flexibility. For the manufacture of wall panels, a composition with a high content of pvc is used. In addition, their internal stiffeners are made of plastic with a thickness of at least 1 mm. It will not be possible to cut such material with a knife.

Laminated panels are best suited for wall decor. Their main difference from the rest is increased resistance to any mechanical damage. This effect is achieved through the use of a special protective film, which protects the pattern from fading, and the surface of the product from scratches and chips. The advantages of PVC panels include:

  • Low demands on the quality of the base. For the installation of lamellas, a prefabricated frame made of wood or metal is used. It can be assembled over any wall, no leveling, primer or putty required.
  • Relative ease of installation. If desired, the master will be able to install the panels without much experience in construction work.
  • The ability to hide any engineering communications behind the lamellas.
  • Maintainability. The panel that has become unusable can be easily removed and replaced with a new one.
  • Ease of maintenance.
  • Large selection of various textures and colors.

Among the shortcomings of plastic panels, it is worth noting less than that of a tile, resistance to mechanical damage, vapor permeability, which leads to the formation of condensate on the surface of the coating. In addition, the frame required for the installation of lamellas "eats" part of the useful area of the room.

For finishing the bathroom, it is best to choose laminated pvc panels who have additional protection from mechanical damage

Option # 5 - decorative plaster

A special mixture consisting of a binder, filler and auxiliary components. The basis of plaster can be both natural and various synthetic substances.

The special relief of the treated surface appears due to the use of various fillers: crumbs of natural stone, polymer granules, glass, cellulose fibers and others. When choosing plaster for bathroom decor, it is important to choose a moisture-resistant solution.

Experts recommend paying attention to compositions intended for facade decoration, which are created using polymer, acrylic and epoxy resins. Decorative plaster has many advantages:

  • Coverage of the entire surface to be decorated without seams and joints, which allows you to flawlessly decorate any part of the room in terms of complexity. For example, columns, arches, niches and shelves.
  • Coating durability. It does not fade, does not wear out and does not fade.
  • Ease of maintenance.
  • A wide selection of various textures and the possibility of coloring the mixture, which allows you to choose the perfect material for decorating a bathroom of any style.
  • No need for complex preparation of the base for applying decorative plaster. In some cases, only priming can be dispensed with.
  • Good compatibility with any finishing materials.

Significant disadvantages of decorative plaster include the risk of cracking if the house has not yet undergone shrinkage after completion of construction.

In addition, it is very important to choose the right composition, since there are fragile and moisture-sensitive varieties of material that will quickly become unusable in the bathroom. For insurance, you can apply a layer of protective varnish over the coating.

Decorative plaster is distinguished by a relief surface, which is created by the filler present in the solution - natural stone chips, cellulose fibers, plastic granules

Option #6 - Mosaic

Very beautiful coverage, which is made up of small pieces of stone, ceramics, glass, metal or smalt. The shape, color and size of the elements can be very different. A distinction is made between handmade mosaics and pre-coated plastic meshes.

In the first case, the installation process will be very laborious and take a lot of time. But as a result, the bathroom will acquire an exclusive design. In the second case, the installation of the mosaic will not be too laborious and time consuming.

On sale you can find a mosaic on a plastic base, which is very simply fixed on the wall. Its installation does not require special skills, and the result is a beautiful and practical coating.

Mosaic is usually not divided into wall and floor, so the same fragments can be laid on any surface. The design of the bathroom is very interesting, when the mosaic seems to “flow” from the wall to the floor. The advantages of mosaic coating include:

  • Effective appearance. You can choose between multi-color and one-color patterns, simple and elaborate motifs.
  • Hygiene. Fungi and mold rarely settle on glass, metal or ceramics. Dirt from such a coating is easy to remove as a result of wet cleaning.
  • Resistant to high humidity and temperature extremes.
  • High strength and durability.
  • The absence of visible joints, the ability to decorate the most complex surfaces in terms of configuration.

The disadvantages of a mosaic mainly depend on the material from which it is made. For example, glass parts are quite easy to scratch, and when hit with a heavy object, cracks can appear on them. Metal fragments deteriorate from exposure to harsh chemicals, so you should carefully choose cleaning products.

In addition, any mosaic coating is characterized by a high cost, which includes not only the price of the material, but also the services for its installation. Only experienced craftsmen can lay the mosaic on their own.

The bathroom, decorated with mosaics, emphasizes the impeccable taste of its owner.

What to give preference?

A variety of materials for decorating bathroom walls serves as a kind of guarantee that everyone can choose for themselves. best coverage. When choosing, you must take into account individual characteristics bathroom, because the same material in different conditions will behave differently.

The decisive factor should not be an attractive appearance, but the durability and practicality of the coating. Then the bathroom will delight its owner for many years not only with beauty, but also with functionality.
