Blog design studio "simpeks design". Decorative columns: DIY options Small columns

Columns were, are and will remain one of the most important architectural - structural elements building. However, if we take it in comparison with walls, then the columns have a much more complex structural component associated with the presence of a complex cross-sectional geometry, respectively, and the facing of the columns is also not a simple process.

Also, the column has a limited cladding area and is often very multifaceted, and corner cladding, similar to slope cladding, is one of the most difficult processes for this type of finish. Round columns are also difficult to be lined, they require perfect accuracy in observing the geometry.

Let us consider in more detail what types / methods of their lining are, as well as the main difficulties in this process; the list is:

  • facing of square columns;
  • lining of polygonal columns;
  • facing of round columns;
  • facing metal columns of complex shapes.

Cladding of square columns is, in fact, the simplest: there are four planes, which are lined in turn along the lateral guide rails set in advance.

These columns are most easily lined both dry and wet way, but the easiest option is siding (dry) cladding, since all that is required is to set up four corner guides and sew them up with siding strips.

Cladding of polygonal columns - the most difficult process that requires special qualifications of the master. The difficulty lies in calculating correct angle rotation of each face of such a column.

The entire outcome of the work depends on the template prepared in advance, according to which the plaster and facing of the columns are performed. As for the dry method of facing polygonal columns, although it is not simple, it is much easier than plaster or lining “on a layer”.

Cladding of round columns complicated in that it is a single, closed plane, which must be performed in compliance with the vertical, as well as strict geometry in a circular section.

The main reference point in it is the correctly set two guides, along which the template of the semicircle of the column moves. Accordingly, work is performed in two stages: the first and second half of the column. If we talk about the dry method of facing a round column, then facing products in the form of a semicircle are quite simple to install.

Cladding of metal columns complex shape is reduced, as a rule, to the fact that in the process of preparation for facing it is given a rectangular or square shape. Accordingly, here the most time-consuming stage is preparation for facing.

As a rule, these columns are presented in the form of a T-section, an I-section, a channel and many more complex section shapes, which makes the cladding process "in fact" as it is, it is incredibly laborious; no aesthetics.

It is worth considering the material itself for facing the columns, more precisely, its shape and size, since materials correctly selected according to these parameters can facilitate the lining process itself.

Features and types of "wet" lining of columns, advantages and disadvantages

The modern technology of lining columns with a “wet” method, as well as walls, is divided into two stages: preparatory and working. Wherein preparatory stage contains preparation for plastering (when facing "on a layer"), and sometimes the process of plastering itself (if facing will be done "under the comb").

When preparing surfaces, it is important to take into account not only the level, plane, angle of rotation of the faces of the column itself, but also the straightness of the columns, if they go in a row. Thus, first of all, the front and rear faces of the extreme columns are hung, after which, according to the established marks (see “Plastering surfaces”), horizontal cords are pulled along the columns.

Marks of the front and rear faces of the intermediate columns are already placed along these cords, and the side marks on each column will have to be set separately. In this case, as can be seen in the figures, the marks are necessary for the correct positioning of the lighthouse rails or template, which is used for plaster preparation for “comb” or “on-layer” cladding; the exception is the lining of the columns with bricks.

As for the lining of columns in a wet way with various materials, it is possible to compile such a list as the types of lining of columns:

  • tiling of columns;
  • facing of columns with stone;
  • facing columns with bricks.

- this is a long outdated type of finish, it is the most painstaking and time-consuming.

It is necessary that all the seams and rows converge, it is necessary to perfectly cut the junction in the corners, it is necessary to lay out the plane perfectly smoothly, without “sides”, straightness, much more is needed, and the decorativeness and practicality of such a finish is no better than other types.

Basically, column cladding ceramic tiles carried out indoors, while the column is prepared perfectly, leveled with drywall (“dry plaster”) or “wet”, mortar plaster. To date, its variety is used - porcelain tiles.

is, as it were, an "outlet", a pleasant exception in this difficult task.

The fact is that the stone, as a rule, is either laid on the surface of the columns in the form of large polished facing blocks, or in the form of products with a natural, chipped structure of deep relief.

In the first case, the simplicity of facing is due to a smaller number of operations for laying facing products, while in the second, due to the relief surface, the eye will not catch all possible deviations.

, that is, in fact, an artificial stone, is good because it excludes surface preparation as such.

The preparatory stage consists of hanging, as a result of which the upper and lower vertical marks of the faces of the columns and their straightness relative to the row are determined.

Bricks for cladding are laid in rows, the main concern in this process is to observe the vertical angles and the thickness of the seam. In addition, the brick can be either with a smooth front surface or with a chipped one, which facilitates the laying process and allows for the possibility of a little skidding.

Features and types of "dry" lining of columns, advantages and disadvantages

When lining columns in a dry way, they are guided by all the same principles and rules for deviations from the level, plane, straightness and angle of rotation of the faces of the columns, as in the case of dry lining. However, as such, there is no division into preparing the surface of the column and facing the column; all work is divided into three stages: hanging, mounting the frame, mounting the facing panels on the frame.

Hanging is similar to wet plastering, there is only one nuance here: stamps are made from dowels, and not from mortar or tile pieces. Also, a chopping cord marks the direction lines of future profiles, along which fasteners for them are mounted.

The frame consists of guides - upper and lower, which are mounted first of all and from profiles that are mounted in the last stage of the frame assembly, after installing the holder brackets for them.

After the frame is set to the design position and fixed, on it, more precisely, on the profile, they begin to “hang” facing products with the help of special brackets and frame screws for metal. As for themselves facing materials for the dry method of facing columns, the list is as follows:

  • lining of columns with wood;
  • lining of columns with composite panels;
  • lining of columns with plasterboard.

implies wooden lining or wooden panels.

In this case, the frame can be made of wooden beams.

Whether this is good or bad is a purely financial and controversial issue, you need to consider how much the material will cost with work + impregnation for water resistance and against insects.

Such a lining itself, depending on the type of wood, can even be healing, unless, of course, it is located inside the house. The rest of the advantages, as they say, "there is no friend for the taste and color", that is, someone likes a tree, someone prefers a stone.

- commonly used the most modern way facade finishing, also referred to as a ventilated facade.

These panels are aluminum cladding products that are mounted on metal carcass using special fasteners so that there are gaps between them.

Thus, there is ventilation inside. In addition to composite panels, plastic, glass, asbestos-cement and porcelain stoneware panels are mounted on the same principle - a new type of finishing materials.

Also for facing rectangular columns there is an excellent material - vinyl siding which is much easier to install.

Plasterboard lining of columns , as you may have guessed, takes place indoors and is intended to align them, but has nothing to do with the finish lining.

For a set of drywall frame, as a rule, a UD-27 guide (27 mm thick) and an SD-70 profile (27 mm thick, 70 mm wide) are used.

Drywall is mounted to the profiles using self-tapping metal screws with a step of 10 cm. After the facing of the columns with drywall is completed, the surface is treated with a primer and, after it dries, is lined with artificial or natural stone tiles using the “comb” method.

This finish is advantageous when the irregularities of the columns are very large in order to perform their plastering or cladding "on a layer".

Supporting structures such as columns are not uncommon in modern apartments. To a greater extent, this applies to open-plan apartments. Sometimes the columns are not exactly the way you want them to be. Your task is to turn it from an inconvenient object into a beautiful and organic detail in the apartment. Making a column in the interior is not an easy task, but it is quite doable.

There are purely decorative columns - they help to divide the room into separate zones, enhance the clarity and beauty of the lines in the interior. With their help, you can focus on other elements of the room: a fireplace, an opening in the wall, a bay window. Most modern columns have a square or rectangular shape, less often round. Round columns are more common in classical interiors, but also in modern projects are also present.

In addition, more often columns in the interior are necessary to mask engineering communications, ugly load-bearing structures. It can be both columns and semi-columns. For those who need to “hide” the column, who do not want it to stand out, we can advise you to mask it correctly.

Finish the columns to match the color of the walls of the room - the supports will not be so conspicuous.

Disguise can be achieved if the column is finished with mirrors - then it will become a light element, and, as it were, “disappears” in space. Finishing with wallpaper or plaster to match the color of the walls looks good, especially in the interior of the kitchen.

This option looks very good: the use of two columns for zoning space. You can make such a kind of rack if you use shelves. Columns will give your room a zest - it's a stylish design, and the originality of the interior.

Polyurethane is an inexpensive material that is often used in the interior. Columns are assembled from it classical style. It is lightweight and installs quickly.

What are columns made of?

An element such as columns is made of various materials. Previously, the columns in the house were assigned the role of exclusively supporting elements, so columns were made of marble, granite, metal, and basalt. This is all natural materials but they are very expensive. Now designers recommend such inexpensive materials as: gypsum, polyurethane, wood, concrete, drywall, and even foam.

Consider first manufacturing options without exterior finish. We will definitely be back to finishing.

  1. The most common option that is used for the manufacture of columns is concrete. It is quite cheap, plastic, and allows you to make from it, in addition to the usual round and square, the most bizarre shapes.
  2. Often used at work drywall. It is used in the manufacture of rectangular columns. Drywall columns must be finished, unlike concrete. Concrete is not finished, but left in its original form if the room is decorated in high-tech style.
  3. In ethno-interiors, in country houses, apply wooden columns.
  4. columns from metal are considered appropriate in interiors made in the style of minimalism and hi-tech. The emphasis is on the contrast of light and dark colors.
  5. IN Lately material such as polyurethane. Polyurethane is used for columns that perform the function of decoration. Many people like the design of polyurethane columns because of the low price, the lightness of the material itself, and the simple work with it. Polyurethane can be easily replaced in case of breakage. It is easy to work with it, and it can be painted in any colors, and besides, the simplest ones. acrylic paints. Installation of such elements is possible without hiring specialists. The main disadvantage of such a column will be color instability 2-4 years after installation. In addition, the strength of a material such as polyurethane is quite low.
  6. Gypsum is also very popular among designers who have already tried their hand at decorating columns. Gypsum columns can be easily restored, thereby restoring the original version. You can remove errors and shortcomings during the installation of gypsum columns by applying grinding.
  7. Styrofoam- Lightweight and inexpensive material. Styrofoam columns are a frame in the form of long cylinders cut along. Styrofoam columns are installed in a certain place, after which the cavity of the columns is filled with concrete.

What if the columns in the apartment are not just decoration, but support system, and do not fit the room at all? The design of the column in the interior can be done not only by the hands of professionals, but also with your own hands, if you, of course, have experience in repairs.

All more people they want to see more air and space in the apartment - hence the fashion for large rooms.

When designing an apartment, or country house keep in mind that if you want free space, then you must definitely redistribute the main load on the columns, or semi-columns. So that the column is not an alien element in the apartment, for example, in the living room, they usually decorate the room in a similar style. If the house has large, wide columns, you can decorate the interior in country style, loft, underground. If the cross section is small, you can decorate the column “under the tree”, make foam, or polyurethane decor.

You can remake the column into a "green" corner, using climbing plants. Especially it concerns country houses, and terraces. Greenery looks great with any size of load-bearing elements. Columns - as props for green plants. Enough to surround load-bearing elements mesh made of plastic or metal - and you get a green terrace.

Your talent as a designer will definitely show up when you think about how to beat the space around the column. Can you think of a perfect original design columns, which will only be in your house. Use this element to zone the room, placing the TV in this way.

Interesting decor is often done with new, modern technologies. Transparent plastic columns are popular, with a fantastic illusion of flying multi-colored air bubbles, or fog, or flowing water. An artificial aquarium can even be built into the body of the column.

In the niche between the two columns, you can build a shelf for books, a mini-bar for bottles, a cabinet for decorative items. It is very interesting how you can combine decorative functions, and practical solutions. Here much depends on your imagination.

decoration

Your task is to choose the decor for the columns that are already installed in your apartment or house. Let's look at what decor can be applied to the columns.

  • For columns with a concrete or plasterboard base, decoration with a material such as polyurethane can be applied. Polyurethane can be used to imitate natural stone.
  • Wooden decors with decorative carvings. Also apply decorative panels from good breeds tree. For example, MDF panels make facing concrete, or drywall.
  • You can decorate the column in the interior using foam decor. It is one of the lightest and inexpensive materials. It has long been used as a decoration. It can be additionally reinforced for strength. Not only columns are made of foam plastic, but also stucco molding, similar to plaster. This material is not only painted, but also plastered and covered with gilding.
  • Recently, flexible tiles have appeared in hardware stores. Flexible tile resembles acrylic plaster with its characteristics. The whole difference is that the tile is already ready at the enterprise, all that remains is to stick it on the column.
  • Another decor option is stone wallpaper. This is not a pattern on the wallpaper, but a special finishing material. It is produced on the basis of sandstone, or gypsum, which is applied to the fabric. It turns out an interesting and flexible material, which is also used for exterior decoration of the house.
  • Decorative rock. There are several ways to make it. They make such a stone from sand and water, with the addition of gypsum, cement, and polymers. Decorative stone can be made by yourself.
  • And the last finishing option is textile decor. Typically, textile decor is used at a wedding, most often it is organza decor. But at the same time, you can apply textile decor in the apartment, decorating the columns with a suitable fabric.

In architecture, there are at least twelve types of columns that have a wide variety of shapes. They can have a constructive value, or they can be used for decorating a room or zoning a space. Be that as it may, this interior detail is not invisible, and, therefore, needs to be decorated. Moreover, original finish columns, can become the main decoration of the interior. Of course, we are talking about spacious rooms in which such an architectural element would look appropriate. Fake columns are easily mounted from drywall, polyurethane, fiberglass - the price of such a design is low. We will talk about what types of materials can be used for their decoration.

Classic finishes

Modern interior design is a harmonious solution of all its elements: from front door, to furniture and curtains. Columns in this design play an important role. Moreover, people's interest in the classic types of their finishes does not fade over the years.

stucco work

Classics in world architecture are cylindrical white columns, decorated with plaster molding. This type of decor is familiar to us from school textbooks with illustrations of ancient Greek enfilades.

  • Nowadays, gypsum is successfully replacing polyurethane, which has the same snow-white texture. This modern polymeric material, very flexible, allows finishing structures of any configuration.
  • Polyurethane parts are mounted on ordinary “liquid nails” glue, such a finish is easy to do with your own hands. The polyurethane surface can be painted, which makes it possible to give the columns a shade that matches color solution interior.

Marble, granite

Marble columns have always been the personification of the wealth of the owner of a luxurious home. So it was many centuries ago, nothing has changed today. Advantages of this stone as natural natural material, keep its value at a constant height. Granite is only slightly inferior to marble in this.

  • Monolithic columns made of solid stone are found only in design projects. They give the interior a solemn look and emphasize its status. They decorate gazebos and terraces, stairs, balconies and parapets.
  • Columns can be not only solid, but also type-setting, mounted from several parts, as well as overhead. Elements of columns made of marble can be superimposed on another, even a plaster structure.

Well, for those who cannot afford such a finish, but really want to, there are other materials that imitate the texture of any natural stone, including marbled. We will talk about them a little later.

This material was invented in the Renaissance. Its main component is marble chips and dust. Thanks to this, ancient Roman architects could imitate the surface of many types of natural stone. This type of finish has survived to this day.

  • It can also be classified as an elite type of room decor. Its exceptional value lies in the fact that using Venetian plaster, it is almost impossible to create an absolutely identical design. People have long been tired of mass production - they want individuality.
  • The essence of this technology lies in the fact that at least three layers of material are required for finishing. The more of them, the more difficult will be the pattern on the surface, which is formed due to the structural features of the plaster.

Multi-layer plaster creates the illusion of a three-dimensional pattern inherent in natural stone. This effect can be enhanced by artistic surface painting. Master, who owns the technique of working with Venetian plaster, can rightly be called an artist. All sorts of paintings and panels, color fantasies are born under his hands, which even he himself will not be able to reproduce later.

Mosaic

Same unique design can be created with the help of mosaics. This type of decoration originated in the ancient East, and is still the most popular there. A mosaic pattern is created from small pieces of ceramics, colored glass, and fragments of stone. This technique allows you to reproduce the complex patterns inherent in the eastern national traditions.

  • Mosaic panels were also found in excavations dating back to the ancient era. Today, this type of decoration is extremely popular. It can be found in a variety of establishments. As well as possible, mosaic decoration is also suitable for columns. Small type-setting mosaic allows you to arrange a column of any configuration.
  • The most popular mosaic material is Venetian glass. It has high strength and has a huge range of colors obtained through various additives: cadmium, boron, mother-of-pearl, aventurine.

On a special account is a mosaic of smalt - a variety of glass. Smalt is obtained by pressing small particles of colored glass with potassium salts and oxides of certain metals. The result is an opaque glass that glows from within. Moreover, a unique play of shades is created on each piece of the mosaic.

Contemporary column finishes

Progress does not stand still, and recently a lot of new finishing materials have appeared that can be used, including for finishing columns. As well as a lot of new ideas that designers give to the world.

Reinforced foam

We all know about this very light and very cheap material He didn't show up today. But recently, foam has been used not only as thermal insulation material but also as a decoration. Additionally reinforced foam figures become quite durable, and the ease of its processing allows you to create any imitation - even an old castle. So:

  • This material allows designers to realize any architectural idea without increasing the cost of finishing. Overhead foam figures hide surface defects, change the proportions of the structure.

From foam, you can build a column, and not what to finish it. By the way, stucco molding can also be made from it, which will not be distinguished from gypsum, or polyurethane. It can be both plastered and painted, giving the appearance of any natural material. The lacy elements of the columns can be covered with gold, and thanks to this, you get a real masterpiece.

Metal in column decoration

Of course, metal is not a finish for a living space. But columns are most often found in public buildings. These are trading floors, and entertainment venues, restaurants and sports facilities. Room designs in the styles of "techno" and "hi-tech" in general practically do not do without the presence of metal.

So:

  • It would seem that what interesting metal can be invented for finishing columns? But that's what designers are for. Look at the photo above: these perforated stainless steel columns adorning the sales area look great and very modern.
  • The main thing is that the room where the metal columns are installed is high enough. As a decor for them, they are used not only stainless steel, but also aluminum with various decorative coatings.
  • special decorative properties have powder coatings. They give an unusual matte surface - beautiful and resistant to damage.

  • Probably the cheapest option metal finish columns, can be considered galvanized steel. It is not as reliable as stainless steel - and therefore cheaper. But the aesthetic qualities of this metal, covered with the same powder paint, are in no way inferior to other options.

For finishing columns, special composite panels, which include a set of parts of a certain shape with a lock part. How many and what parts are needed depends on the dimensions of the column. Most often, they are made for a specific customer.

HPL panels

This material appeared relatively recently, so not everyone knows about it. In principle, this is a kind of plastic: the so-called high-pressure laminate. It is produced in Germany, and is used for finishing ventilated facades. And who said that they can not decorate the columns?

In our example, the finishing of square columns is made with these panels. When buying HPL panels, you can be sure that there will be no problems with installation - instructions are always attached to them.

flexible tile

We will introduce you to another material that is very convenient for finishing columns of any shape. This is a flexible tile made using pressed marble chips and acrylic resin. Such a tile has a thin, and rather complex relief, with reversed corners and gaps.

Flexible tiles have recently appeared on the domestic construction markets. By its properties, it is similar to acrylic plaster. The only difference is that the tile is already molded in the factory, and on it front side paper or film is pasted, giving it a certain texture - most often it is brick or stone.

Wood paneling

Finishing the columns with wood is also a very popular finishing option. It gives the interior a classic severity and nobility, emphasizes the beauty of the interior. Of course, this finish is combined with other elements - cornices, furniture, interior doors.

It is most convenient to use wooden panels for this purpose. They can be made from either solid wood or MDF covered with wood or bamboo veneer. Columns decorated with cork will also look great.

Fake diamond

Appearance natural and fake diamond almost indistinguishable, but the difference in price is palpable. Therefore, fake stone is much more often used in the decoration of not only facades and internal surfaces walls, but also columns. So:

  • By appearance decorative stone can have a different structure: chipped stone; sawn, with relatively smooth edges; rubble, similar to boulders; as well as an arbitrary form created for a specific design development.

There are several options for its manufacture. According to the type of binder, they are divided into: cement, gypsum and polymer options. The remaining ingredients are sand, pigments and water. So some types of stone can be made directly on the construction site.

There is another option for obtaining the texture of a stone - this is a stone wallpaper. This is not at all what immediately comes to mind: a drawing on vinyl wallpaper or fleece. This wallpaper is made of the finest stone veneer.

They are produced on the basis of gypsum or sandstone, which, together with stone veneer, is applied to textiles. This results in a highly flexible material that is ideal for any column configuration. Moreover, these wallpapers are not afraid of moisture, so they are also suitable for outdoor decoration.

Glass

And, finally, about finishing columns with glass. This material, as we know, has many advantages. All kinds of glass processing methods can decorate any structure, including a column.

  • The finishing material can be mirror panels, colored glass, hardboard with a sandblasted pattern, or simply embossed glass with beautiful internal lighting that creates a unique, fabulous atmosphere in the room.

We have given you many examples of interesting column finishes. We hope that this information has helped you make the right choice. Your interior will be the most beautiful and original, and you will be able to surprise your guests and delight loved ones.

The Great Hall needs additional supports for the vault. Columns in the interior are installed with a constructive purpose. decorative columns designers design and set to decorate the room, emphasize its style and separate functional areas. It is impossible to imagine some interiors, especially the Roman one, without pompous decor, which at one time was simply necessary. IN modern interior columns can also be of practical importance, they can be made independently. Construction stores offer a large selection of Styrofoam columns in various styles.

The emphasis in the design is on the columns

Apartment design with columns

Columns in the interior should not be disguised as a background. Designers are advised to make them an accent in the design of the room. They should emphasize the style or be a contrast to the main decoration and furniture. Structurally, in architecture, supporting and decorative columns are separated. In the interior, they must be turned into the main element.

All types of columns have 3 elements.

  1. The base is a powerful foundation for classic looks. It is a support and is decorated a little, mostly with horizontal grooves. They emphasize the massiveness of the structure.
  2. The main part is the stem. This is the stem of the entire element. It has a flat surface or longitudinal vertical lines.
  3. The capital smoothly turns into ceiling beams. It is located at the top and collects on itself most decor. Its function is to emphasize the luxury of decoration, to give the interior grandeur and pomposity.

In a modern interior, the base and capital of the column may be absent. They are replaced by plinths that close the transition of the support to the ceiling.

Columns in the interior can have any shape in section:

  • circle;
  • square;
  • all kinds of polyhedra;
  • rectangles;
  • oval.

Historically different kinds columns were created as necessary element in architecture to maintain the vaults of the great halls. They were designed in accordance with the era and the possibilities of the owner of the palace. Marble columns emphasized the wealth of the owner, his position in society. On them, the capital was massive and densely decorated with floral ornaments with curls. For other styles, column cladding is used. These are slabs and mosaics from decorative stone, glass, synthetic materials.

The atmosphere of the interior mystery and relaxation is created by the illumination of the columns. It emphasizes the grace of the stem and the luxury of the capital, the massiveness of the base. The image of the interior and its mood are changing. It is better to place diode bulbs in the upper part. The light will emphasize the rough surface of the columns in Greek style, will be reflected in the gloss of techno. At the bottom, the border with steps, the podium, is highlighted with light. Directional beams can highlight the luxurious stucco with gilding in the living room, decorated in the Roman era, Baroque, Gothic, Classicism.

A variety of column shapes, materials and ways of finishing them

Columns in the interior of the room

Columns standing alone can imitate a partition between openings and be sheathed with planks and shelves, draped with fabrics and lined with mosaics and mirrors. Books, CDs are conveniently placed on them, a TV finds its place. If seats are made around the column, an original place for relaxation and communication is obtained. The columns in the apartment have several functions:

  • emphasize style;
  • create an atmosphere of prosperity and good taste;
  • zone space;
  • visually enlarge the hall;
  • mask communications.

The stem is mostly the same width in height in classic, historical and techno styles. In the avant-garde, art deco and other decoration, the shape of the trunk is unpredictable. It is determined by the designer, based on his vision, material possibilities and constructive necessity. Column made of wood natural style can be a trunk of a natural form with roots and branches. The lining of the columns in this case is simply done with impregnations and varnish, emphasizing the pattern of wood.

The columns in the interior were traditionally made of stone. Modern materials brought variety. Now supports can be made:

  • marble;
  • basalt;
  • gypsum;
  • tree;
  • metal;
  • expanded polystyrene;
  • polyurethane;
  • drywall.

Decorative columns in a modern interior have different heights. They do not have to support the ceiling or lean on the floor. They can create a kind of forest of luminous cylinders of different heights and even hang down from above.

Support columns are decorated according to the chosen style

Interior modern apartment with columns

If the columns in the interior are supporting and are part of the building structure, they cannot be removed and rearranged. You should not mask them, it is easier to turn them into part of the decor. The design of the columns is done in uniform style with the room or stands out with the contrast of textures. For emphasis, the facing of columns with stone, film, metal, ceramics, and plastic is used. In a brilliant smooth surfaces interior will focus on themselves brick columns. Entwined with living plants, they create a special cosiness in the city room.

Modern materials allow using self-adhesive film create an imitation, and the plaster columns will look like they are made of expensive stone. A mosaic floor made from ready-made blocks will allow you to turn your modest modern house to a splendid palace.

In the living room, columns separate the dining room and kitchen. A single one will become the basis for an island or turn into a warehouse for drinks. Between pairs standing pillars it is convenient to arrange shelves for dishes, separating them from the place of cooking from the dining room. This gap will decorate glass mosaic and green wall of indoor plants.

Brutality and gloss of industrial styles

Modern apartment interior with columns

Mass migration from rural areas to cities, first in America, then in other countries, gave rise to the loft style. People adapted abandoned houses for housing industrial enterprises and attics. Metal columns in the form of I-beams, pillars made of pipes and concrete supports became the main element of the style. As the standard of living increased, brightly upholstered sofas, polished tables and cabinets, and high-quality wall decoration appeared. Now, iron and concrete, with their rough look, emphasize the gloss of furniture and the expensive decoration of the room with plastic, glass and chrome.

In a modern industrial style interior, columns are lined to imitate corrosion spots on metal, dirty concrete with potholes and scratches. The textured surface is painted in gray shades of blue and green.

Spacious loft-style rooms seem even larger, separated by a row of concrete pillars. The illusion of alternating zones behind rows of columns is created, and there is a feeling of endless space.

Creating columns with your own hands

Column decoration

Craft lovers are often interested in how to make a column with their own hands. To create the selected image of the room, you can buy foam blanks. They are relatively cheap, easy to assemble and install. It is enough to glue a few elements and install in your home. After

The column is made by hand without special equipment from polyurethane and drywall. Both options have advantages and disadvantages.

Polyurethane is easy to process, does not require special skills. Difficulties may arise in the manufacture of a mold for pouring and maintaining proportions when creating a composition. This requires special space. It is impossible to do this in a standard city apartment. It's easier to buy blanks in the store. For independent work, it remains to assemble and clad the column.

Any polyurethane finish will do. Can be painted with acrylics in any color. Uncoated plastic burns out over time, turns yellow. You will have to prime and return the desired shade to the decor or stick a film.

Drywall requires the creation of a frame from a metal profile, which is then sheathed. The shape of the column is classically made square. The possibilities of drywall allow you to bend it with an arc with a large radius, making arches and decorative elements. various shapes. Facing columns GKL has a weight limit only. Heavy stone and ceramic sheet may not withstand. The primed surface can be easily painted in any color, decorated under brickwork and other texture with the help of vinyl plates, glass mosaics.

Columns in the interior - a return through the centuries

As you know, fashion has a habit of coming back. This applies to clothes, shoes, hairstyles, and, to no lesser extent, interior design. Decorators are increasingly striving to elevate the minimalism of ultra-modern materials and solutions with the help of elegant antique elements. Today at the peak of popularity - antique columns in a modern interior.

Such a detail adds grandeur and grace to even the most unprepossessing room and invariably evokes associations with ancient Greek temples and luxurious Roman baths. True to columns in the interior“worked” for a common idea, the classical principles of their construction often have to be sacrificed.

Columns in the interior - a bit of history

The column - a symbol of ancient and classical architecture - is a pillar cylindrical shape, serving not so much as a decoration, but for supporting load-bearing structures. Distinguish between the base of the column and its upper, decorative part, often decorated with bas-reliefs. In ancient Greek and Roman temples, snow-white marble columns were used immediately in in large numbers, creating a reliable support for the roof and, at the same time, making the monumental building dynamic, as if “floating” in the air. During classicism, both the practical and aesthetic value of this architectural element was actively exploited: massive pillars supported high stucco ceilings, and their upper part served as an additional decoration for rich interiors. As in ancient times, the columns were made of marble and valuable types of stone.

Today columns in the interior houses or apartments can perform all their classic tasks, only their appearance has changed a little.

What are columns for interiors made of today

Classic columns made of massive stone or marble in a modern interior are not so common, mainly because, due to the high cost and heavy weight of raw materials, the manufacture of such decorative element can take a lot of time and cost the owner a pretty penny. However, marble columns are still the most fashionable and stylish accent in the interior.

Of the cheaper materials, limestone and basalt are popular. Facing columns for the most luxurious interiors can be carried out using onyx, jasper, jadeite, lapis lazuli and other semi-precious ornamental stones. If the supporting function of the columns in the interior does not play important role, quite economical solution will replace real columns with lightweight and inexpensive plasterboard imitations.

Functions of columns in a modern interior

The main tasks of the columns in the design of the room have not changed much. They are mainly used for supporting and masking load-bearing structures, visual correction of the proportions of the room, as well as for. As for innovations, today the surface of the columns can also be used for arranging color and textural accents indoors, and even as quite utilitarian items.

They will be an excellent way out if, for example, in the interior of the living room there are unsuccessfully located and conspicuous communication structures. Everyone knows how such unpleasant little things spoil a thoughtful design with love, and columns can successfully hide them from prying eyes. If you are designing a house from scratch, and there is a very large load on the ceiling of the room, heavy, but at the same time, elegant-looking columns will take on some of the weight.

As for the visual expansion of space, columns have no equal here: representing vertical lines, they, according to a well-known law, “pull” the room up. For example, arranged in a row around the perimeter of the room, these slender, graceful designs can visually add height to the ceiling.

One of the modern functions of columns in any interior is space zoning. There are a lot of options for using this technique. So, columns can be "circled" dining area, separating it from the kitchen and living room, or place two columns on the sides of it, turning it into the real center of this room. Another way is to decorate a hall or entrance to a room with a series of columns.

If in ancient times the columns were mostly smooth and snow-white, or had a marble texture, today the color and texture variety applicable to the design of columns in the interior simply knows no bounds. For example, columns can be covered or painted in contrasting or consonant with the general color scheme color, or even decorate with real painting. You can highlight the magnificence of such columns, which can be called the proud word "art object", with the help of a backlight mounted in the ceiling.

I would like to add a few words about very unconventional ways of how to beat the columns in the interior of modern housing. Given the fashion designers' penchant for practicality, a false column hollow inside can be used as a locker or stand for appliances, and by placing it on it, you can equip a real mini-bar in it. Semi-columns, in turn, can be used as an elegant and original support for furniture - tables, armchairs, chairs, and even cabinets.

What room will decorative columns fit into?

You can use columns today in the design of any room: the interior of a living room with columns can be called classic, but these elements will look no less advantageous in the hall, bedroom, or even in the bathroom.
