DIY arched metal door. Do-it-yourself arched doors: how to install correctly. Drywall window slopes

Arched structures in construction have been known for quite some time. But previously, using arches in the design of homes or other buildings was the privilege of the nobility. Luxurious palaces, churches and so on - this was the main direction in the use of arched structures. At that time, building these was quite difficult in many respects. That is why their spread everywhere began only in the 20th century. Progress does not stand still and with the development of technology, installation work for arranging arches have become available to the general population, as well as use in various fields of construction.

An arched entrance door is more durable than a regular door, since its production uses solid solid wood, optionally covered with metal.

Today it is no longer a luxury, but rather one of the popular options for interior design or building design. A DIY arched door can easily decorate any room and make its design more original.

When carrying out individual construction, you can use arches in the interior of windows and doors, when decorating the ceiling, and so on. Of course, I would like to separately note the design of the arched door. After all, it is distinguished by its special sophistication and attractiveness. This is exactly what will be discussed next.

Types of arched openings

Today, very often in the design of both residential and other premises, you can find a variety of arches. These can be either entrance or interior openings. There are quite a lot of their types. But if you think about classification, you can divide them into the following types:

  1. Semicircular view. The most common one today.
  2. Gothic (pointed) arches. They are distinguished by the presence of an elongated shape that does not have smooth lines with a pointed upper part.

But that's not all, the first option is divided into several subtypes. This:

  1. Classic option. It implies the presence of a regular semicircular shape.
  2. Ellipsoidal. The name speaks for itself; their shape resembles a slightly elongated oval.
  3. Modern style. Its use gives the arches a variety of original forms having various kinds protrusions and transitions.
  4. Romantic version of arches. It is very simple, as it has the shape of a rectangle with a rounded top.
  5. Horseshoe arches (horseshoe-shaped). Their design implies the presence of both semicircular shapes and shapes with a pointed top. This option can most often be found in the interiors of different national cultures.

Now a few words about arched doors.

Arched doors: design options

An arched interior door will help visually expand small space corridor.

Arched doors can be classified according to various criteria. For example, according to the material used for manufacturing or the features of their design. And another classifying feature is the location of their installation. So, taking the last of the signs as a basis, arched doors can be classified into:

  1. Interior doors. As is already clear, they are located indoors. Their design is made of wood and very often has elements such as mosaic and glass.
  2. Entrance arched doors. This option finds its application in various public buildings, for example in shops. In addition, various government agencies and shopping or entertainment centers use them in their interiors. Their manufacture involves the use of a plastic profile.

The next classifying feature is the material from which arched doors are made. There isn't much choice here. It is due to the complexity and existing difficulties in the manufacture of doors in the form of an arch. There are only 2 categories. This:

  1. Plastic. It is used to produce profile structures, which are subsequently used to make doors and windows.
  2. Tree. This material is recommended for indoor use, but in private construction it can also be used entrance doors.

And finally, the nuances of the design are also a classifying feature. Based on it, the following types can be distinguished:

  1. Doors shaped to match the opening. It takes quite a lot to produce a structure of this kind. a large number of time. And not everyone can afford their cost. The material for production is usually wood.
  2. A door leaf that has a standard solution with an arch designed above it. This type of door has a lower price, since the semicircular part is installed separately from the door leaf and remains stationary. In this case, you can use several door options, for example, swing or sliding.
  3. Doors with only 1 leaf. Used to decorate interior spaces. Use as input is also allowed.
  4. If the opening has big sizes wide, it would be advisable to use double doors. Fix 1 of the parts in doorway possible using a device such as a latch.

Making an arched door with your own hands: is it possible?

This work is not easy, but it is still possible to do it on our own. Below you will find the work order and useful tips for making an arched door. I would like to note that it would be better to make the frame for such a door to order. To do this, you need to decide on the size and seek help from specialists. But the manufacture of a door leaf involves more simple technology.

Necessary equipment

First of all, you need to make sure you have everything you need for work. This concerns various instruments and materials. Here's a short list:

  • an electric jigsaw equipped with saw blades for working with wood;
  • electric milling cutter (cutters should be of 2 types: disk for making grooves and cylindrical);
  • belt sander (it would be good if it was equipped with sandpaper in different sizes);
  • boards 5 cm thick;
  • wooden wedges;
  • medium-sized bars and self-tapping screws (4 pieces are enough), the length of which is 30 mm greater than the thickness of the bars used;
  • an adhesive composition with water-resistant properties (for example, PVA).

Door leaf arch: how to make?

To make it, we need the pure opening width values. You can calculate it in a simple way: from the total width, subtract the thickness of the box and the estimated gap (usually 2 mm).

At the next stage, you need to decide on the size of the arch. For a harmonious look, it should be equal to half the width of the door opening. Having found this out, you can begin to calculate the required number of boards. The location of the material (boards) will be horizontal.

When installing a fixed arch in the resulting cavity, you can “hide” all the wires and cables.

For work, use only well-dried material. Using an electric router, you need to make the grooves. The protruding part of the groove should correspond to 2.5 mm. All grooves are made by analogy with the first.

The inner surface of the grooves must be freed from dust accumulated in them, after which they can be treated using adhesive composition. Then you connect all the parts and leave them without moving for high-quality drying.

The following steps involve making a semicircle. This technology is reminiscent of working with drywall. Having marked the semicircular workpiece using electric jigsaw, you need to trim it. Next, use a grinder with the largest grain, then with the fine one.

The remaining part of the door is made according to the principle described above. Only the position of the boards will differ; it will be vertical.

Please note that the canvas finished door includes 3 parts: a lower horizontal part, a shield made of boards arranged vertically, and an upper part in the form of an arch.

The tenon method is used for connection.

For high-quality fixation, use glue and wedges for support. All that remains is to complete the final finishing of the finished door leaf. What it will be like, your imagination will tell you.

How to close an arch: installing an accordion-type folding door and other options

Openings with an arch make standard apartment interiors stylish and elegant. The arched shape of the doorway visually expands the space and changes the interior beyond recognition. In city apartments, arched openings are not always left open, since it is necessary to ensure the possibility of complete separation of individual rooms. But the curved upper lintel creates difficulties when choosing and installing a door in an arched opening. There are several options for how to close such an opening with a door; they differ both in the complexity of execution and in the principles of approach to solving such a problem.

Options for closing an arched opening

There are two types of situations when the owner installs a door in an arched opening. The first is when the issue of installing the door is decided after the arch is made. In this case, the matter is complicated by the fact that the opening is already ready, and you have to rely on ready-made conditions.

Arch made inside the opening

The second is when the owner thought in advance about options for installing a door in the arch, and when making the opening prepared the necessary elements for this (niches for a cassette sliding door). From the options below, you can choose the best one, depending on your specific situation.

When creating arches, the opening was not enlarged, but roundings were made

An important factor when choosing the type of door and the method of installation in the arch is the method of making the opening with the arch. If the radius is inside a rectangular opening, then its actual height will remain the same, but visually it will appear lower.

Closing the opening on one side with a sliding door to the full height

Sliding doors are installed on the outside, with the doors sliding along the wall. The size of the canvas is made according to the height of the opening at the top point of the arch. Thus, the sash will overlap the arch on one side of the opening. WITH reverse side the passage will remain open.

Sliding door with curved opening

Important! In this combination of a rectangular panel and an arched passage, the sash should have a symmetrical pattern, either in the form of radius panels, or be made using arched glazing. In this case, all segments in the design of the canvas should have a vertical orientation, preferably without horizontal jumpers. This way you can visually raise the opening.

Cassette door installation

This best option, which is planned at the stage of creating the arch. Arch with sliding door-cassette-type coupe is also a budget option compared to the cost of manufacturing a door leaf with arched shapes. A rectangular canvas with the same pattern is used. This approach will allow you to close a non-standard opening with any shape.

Cassette door in arched doorway

Making a wooden door

If the door is installed in a ready-made opening, and sliding structures for some reason the owner doesn’t like it, all that remains is to go to a carpentry shop and order an arched door.

Wooden door in an arch

In wide openings you can install a double door, each leaf of which is a folding door book.

The opening increased in height

Making an arched portal by cutting out the upper part above the opening in the partition - correct option from an aesthetic point of view. Such an arch will look proportional in the room. A high arch will give more room for imagination, and there are many more possibilities for installing a door into it. The main principle of closing a high arched passage with doors is the use of structures with transoms. With this approach, you can install in the opening standard doors any type.

Door block with transom

An expensive and at the same time luxurious option is to order a solid wooden panel with a solid wood frame from the workshop. This method is used to close narrow arches designed for a single-leaf door. A cheap option would be a regular door with a transom.

The most in an accessible way To close an arch with a door is to make a rectangular box without a threshold and install an accordion-type folding door into it. These systems are sold in kits, have a variety of designs, and are easy to install. After installing the folding door, you can evaluate how it looks in the interior, and in accordance with the impressions received, make an upper arched transom and complete the design of the opening.

In addition, folding systems are not designed for intensive use. This is exactly the mode that is usually assumed when installing in an arch, because only in the open state does it look impressive.

What are folding doors made of?

The bulk of folding systems in stores are made of MDF or plastic. The plastic is light and practical, but it lacks soundproofing properties, and the design itself is noisy and gives the impression of laxity.

Important! The plastic panels have stiffening ribs, so despite their external flimsiness they are rigid and durable.

Accordion door in the opening and standard equipment of the folding system

The assembled plastic structure is lightweight, so the technician will not need outside help for installation. The plastic itself is easy to cut, and modern movable locking connections panels allow you to assemble and install the structure yourself in a few hours. In addition, guide profiles in plastic structures are attached via clips, which simplify the installation process.

Systems with MDF slats look solid, but they are more difficult to install. They look organically in an arched opening. Due to the weight of the structure, the guides are attached to the opening using self-tapping screws.

The standard folding design kit includes the following elements:

  • Narrow panels. In addition to several identical panels from which the canvas is assembled, there are two half-panels that are installed at the edges, a starting and a locking strip.
  • Guides. All kits have a top and two side guides. In systems for wide openings or with flexible slats, there is also a lower guide.
  • Rollers, stoppers. In some designs, regular hinges may be used to connect sections.

Extensions and platbands for the box, locking mechanisms are not included in the package and must be purchased separately.

How to install a folding structure

First, the box is made and installed. It is assembled from additional panels that do not have the usual quarter for the door leaf. The box is made according to the height of the straight part of the sides of the arched opening.

After installing the box, you need to measure the height and width of the resulting opening and only then go shopping for a folding system. This way you can accurately calculate the number of sections and select them according to width.

Important! After purchasing a folding door, you must carefully read the installation manual. Each manufacturer provides their products with detailed instructions.

  • In budget models made of PVC, the slats are connected to each other through special grooves or using gaskets. The joining process looks like this: the panels are moved, one lamella is inserted into the groove of the other lamella and pulled to the end.
  • The MDF sections have special eyes that fit together and a long pin (axle) is threaded through them.

Assembling folding door slats

  • It is better to install the lock and handle in the lock panel before assembling the blade.
    • The slats are cut to the required height. When suspended, they should be raised above the floor by 1.5-2 cm.
    • After connecting the lamellas and half-lamellas, a locking panel is attached on one side, and a blind (fixing) panel on the other.
    • The rollers are attached to the upper end of the sections one at a time, starting from the locking lamella. Before installation, it is advisable to treat them with technical petroleum jelly.
    • The top profile is cut exactly to the width of the opening, and the side profiles are placed close to it from below.
    • The procedure for installing the profile depends on the intended method of attachment to the opening. If the profile is attached to clips, you need to mark and secure the clips around the perimeter of the box. To do this, a line is drawn in the center of the upper jumper, and using a level it is continued on the racks. The clips for the locking vertical profile are smaller than the others. On the top jumper, clips are attached in increments of 5-7 cm, and on the sides it is enough to install 4 pieces. After trimming the guides, all that remains is to insert them into the fixed clips. If they are tight, you can use a rubber mallet.
    • If the profile is attached to self-tapping screws, then first install the upper guide. It is screwed onto one screw in the middle. After this, the guide is unfolded so that the sash rollers can be inserted into it. Having inserted the sash, it is assembled in the center, the profile is turned back, finally aligned and the remaining screws are tightened. Only after this the side parts are screwed in level.
    • At the end, the blind panel is snapped into the side profile and the mechanism is checked for smooth operation. A strike plate for a lock or latch is installed in the lock profile.

    The finishing of the opening with platbands is carried out after the installation of the arched transom.

Installation video of the accordion-type folding system:

In small apartments, doors to an opening with an arch need to be planned before work on its creation begins. And you can close an existing opening without damaging the surrounding space using a folding structure.

    Show something different from the tables on the blog, otherwise I haven’t been there for a long time.

    Children's theme in Lately I was captivated in a way that was not childish. They asked me to make various items for the kindergarten.

    The first subject is educational, necessary and useful. This is a traffic light, children will use it to learn the rules of the road, an extremely important thing.

    Let me make a reservation right away: they also made a pedestrian version with people, but a simpler one made from cardboard.

    In principle, they asked me to make this three eyes into a simple cardboard one, but can I really do it without any problems)) I thought about making a reliable educational object right away, and I did it. How long is enough?

    The concept of the figure is that it is large enough for everyone to see, stable, durable and with rotating mechanism, the point is that there are 4 sides, one side shows all the signals for a general understanding of the device.

    The other three sides are given one signal, the teacher can turn and show any color out of 3 and ask the children about its purpose.

    In general, it seemed to me that it would be right

    Initial thoughts about color circles on magnets and other light bulbs had to be canceled; we need a simple, understandable solution that is difficult to break; magnetic circles can get lost, light bulbs and batteries can fail.

    I don’t know whether the idea succeeded, but time will tell.

    The entire base is MDF, which was glued together with PVA; for temporary tack, I also fastened it with a micropin.

    Separately, I would like to note that you can use a circular saw to make circles of different diameters and, most importantly, the same size, using a simple device, first we cut square blanks, and then on the device, rotating the part, we cut off the corners to a polyhedron, and then rotating the part we finish it to a circle.

    I glued the box together, the visors are halves of the eyes of the circles, I made a groove under them with a router, so such things cannot be securely glued into the end.

    The whole thing rotates on a pipe from the joker system, in my opinion, for shelving, so that the stops do not fall out and fall through, which were fixed by bugs.

    The base was made massive and wide from thick layers of MDF; with such a base, the traffic light is not so easy to tip over on its side.

    I played the fool and drilled right through the pipe, so I had to put a plate on the return side.

    I spray painted everything, then varnished it, the thing is ready.

    I didn’t paint the signal circles; they were cut out of self-adhesive paper, which makes it easier to update the display item.

  • “And I’m crazy, and I’m crazy!” (C)

    Hello, brothers in repair! I haven’t written anything here for a long time, and in general I rarely come in, it’s all a bit of a lack of time: first a drinking session, sometimes a party, and now a new “attack” has attacked me. But knowing that, despite everything, you stubbornly do not forget me, I decided not to be a pig and tell you about my new hobby. I’ll start from afar: I have worked almost my entire adult life as an electronics engineer, moreover, as an engineer developing electronic and electrical devices of the widest class and purpose, and at the same time purely in the defense industry. It is clear that the scope of my amateur radio interests was limited only by my laziness, there were simply no restrictions on radio components for me, I had EVERYTHING! Well, following the trends of the amateur radio fashion of that time, my main focus was on radio receivers and amplifiers, of course, on transistors and microcircuits. I haven’t worked in this field for a long time, and I threw everything into the landfill a long time ago, but all this time I had a dream in my soul - to make a tube power amplifier, and not a simple one, but one that would make everyone gasp. And I must say, at work I most of my time I dealt with electric vacuum devices, radio tubes, to put it simply, so this topic was very familiar to me. And then there’s this fashion for “warm tube sound”, which people are literally going crazy about. In short, a year ago I decided to make my dream come true. I immediately decided: the mainstream, ordinary tube amplifiers with an output transformer, are not interesting to me, this is not a royal matter! Shouldn't I invent a TRANSFORMER-LESS tube amplifier? Well, I well imagined the difficulties along this path, and I had some of my own thoughts on this matter, but still I decided to consult with the radio amateurs. Found it on Facebook suitable group, he himself began to publish in it, and once asked a question on the topic: could anyone tell me the circuit of such an amplifier. And they immediately give me a link: //hifisound.com.ua. a-6s33s-otl/ (I hope I didn’t violate any Forum rules by providing a direct link here, especially since it’s from a completely different area?). I won’t talk about this scheme, if anyone is interested, I can later explain what’s what, I’ll just say that this scheme immediately interested me, both for its unusualness and for the potential opportunities that I saw in it. I decided to start. And where to start: there are 0 parts, there is a soldering iron, also a Soviet one, and a tester from Ketai. But, bad luck - the beginning: I got comfortable on Avito, on Ali Express, went to the Mitinsky radio market a couple of times, and began to acquire amateur radio junk.

    Now I’ll go and take Tinka for a walk, and I’ll continue, if you’re interested, with photos.)))

    DIY arched doors: how to install correctly

    The topic of this article is the manufacture of arched doors, their installation and the intricacies of these processes. We will talk about the types of doors with arches, note their varieties and the features of each type. We will also give recommendations on self-production entrance door in the form of an arch made of solid wood.

    Today arched openings various forms and styles are used in the construction and decoration of most premises. They are used as entrance and interior doors.

    Types of arched openings

    Of all the diversity doorways in the form of arches (see Arches in the interior) the following classification can be made:

    • Semicircular arches. They are the most common and are also divided into subtypes:
      1. Classic (semicircular) - they have a smooth radial shape.
      2. Ellipsoidal - made in the shape of an elongated oval.
      3. Modern - have intricate shapes with various protrusions.
      4. Romantic - shaped more like a rectangle, with the upper edges slightly rounded.
    • Horseshoe arches. They are shaped like a horseshoe. They can have not only a smooth semicircle, but also an elongated, pointed top. Most often, openings of this type are used to decorate premises in national styles.
    • Gothic (pointed) arches. These structures have an elongated, pointed shape, without smooth transitions.

    What types of arched doors are there?

    Arched doors have many varieties and are classified according to various factors: installation location, material of manufacture, design features

    Types of arched doors at installation site

    There are two main categories here:

    1. Arched interior doors- located inside residential and other types of premises. Most often they are made of wood and have glazing. Stained glass compositions are often used for glazing such structures (see Interior doors with stained glass: about beauty and individuality).
    2. Entrance doors in the form of arches- mainly used in entrance groups ah establishments: shops, organizations, shopping and entertainment centers. Made from plastic profile.

    What are arched doors made of?

    Due to the complexity of manufacturing this type of door leaf, the variety of material for their production is not very abundant:

    1. Plastic. This material used for the production of profiles from which not only entrance doors are made, but also windows.
    2. Solid wood. Wooden door leaves in the shape of arches are used for entrance areas in the private sector, as well as inside any type of premises.

    Structural features of arched doors

    Based on operating features, installation complexity and cost finished product The following arched door structures can be distinguished:

    • Canvases that repeat the contours of the opening one to one. The peculiarity of such doors is that their production takes a long time. They stand quite high. Such models are made from wood (see Making wooden doors: technological process), since arched plastic doors made using a different technology.
    • Standard canvases with an arched part fixed above them. Such doors are somewhat cheaper, since their arched part is mounted separately and does not open together with the door leaf. It also becomes possible to use not only hinged, but also sliding versions of the canvases.

    Important! The opening height for such doors should be large enough. It is calculated by the formula: Vpr = 210 cm + half the width of the opening.

    • Single doors. They are usually used as interior spaces, as well as input options for private homes and public spaces.
    • Double doors. For wide openings it is advisable to use two sashes. One of them can be fixed in the opening using a latch. Relevant for entrance groups. In this case, more often than not, the “working” part of the door is 2 times wider than the fixed part.

    Making an arched door yourself

    Despite the difficulty of making such canvases, it is possible. Now you can see for yourself. You and I will learn how to make wooden arched entrance doors.

    It is better to order the box part according to your dimensions, and we will make the canvas with our own hands (see Size of entrance doors).

    We prepare everything you need

    First you need to prepare tools, boards and available materials.

    • Jigsaw with wood saws.
    • Electric milling machine with two types of cutters: disk (for grooves) and cylindrical.
    • Sanding machine with sandpaper of different grain sizes. The best one is tape.
    • Boards, 5 centimeters thick.
    • Wooden wedges.
    • Two small blocks and 4 wood screws. The length of the screws should be 30mm greater than the thickness of the bars.
    • Carpenter's waterproof glue. PVA is possible.

    Making a blank for the arched part of the canvas

    To make the arched part of the door leaf, we first need to measure the final width of the opening. That is, from the total width we subtract the thickness of the “box” part and a 2mm gap between the door and the opening (frame).

    After this we do the following work:

    • In order for the arch to turn out beautiful, its radius must be made equal to half the width of the doorway. Based on the width of the prepared boards, we calculate how many pieces will be needed. The boards will be positioned horizontally.

    Important! Before making an arched door, you need to select well-dried boards. Since if they are damp, the canvas will warp over time.

    • Now, using an electric router, we make grooves for a tighter connection. To do this, we take a disk-slot cutter. We make the grooves in such a way that the protruding part is about half the thickness of the board. That is, 2.5 millimeters. The same goes for the internal groove.
    • Next, we clean the entire surface of the grooves from dust and apply wood glue to them. After this, we connect all the boards and leave them to dry.

    Important! In order for gluing to occur better, you need to take a board and attach pre-prepared bars to it with self-tapping screws. The distance between the bars should be 10–20 mm greater than the width of the glued workpiece. Place the workpiece between the bars and spread it apart with wedges.

    Cut out a semicircle from the blank

    For this operation, we recall the experience of installing plasterboard arches.

    We use one of two options to outline the arched shape:

    1. If the arch has an even semicircle. Mark the middle at the bottom of the workpiece. Then we take a pencil and tie a non-stringent thread to it. Cut the thread exactly to the length of the arch radius. Apply one end of the thread to the mark and draw a semicircle with a pencil.
    2. If the shape of the arch (as in the photo) has an elongated semicircular or pointed shape, then we use a different method. To outline the boundaries of the bend contour it is very convenient to use a long metal ruler. We also make a mark for the middle and draw a line from it strictly vertically to the length of the radius of the arch. Next, we place the ruler on the edge and bend it so that one edge touches the radius mark, and the other coincides with the edge of the workpiece. After this, draw a line with a pencil. On the second side we follow the same steps.

    Important! Make sure you get a symmetrical arched neckline.

    Next, take a jigsaw and carefully cut the workpiece according to the markings. After that we take grinding machine with the coarsest sandpaper and process the surface of our arched part of the door on both sides. After this, we repeat grinding with a finer abrasive.

    Now the most beautiful part of our door is ready. Arched interior doors can be decorated with the same elements. However, it is worth considering that for interior spaces glazed arches will be more elegant. And their manufacture requires carpentry skills.

    Finishing the door leaf

    Now we have to make the rest of the door. It will be assembled according to the same principle as the previous part. The only difference will be that the boards will not be positioned horizontally, but vertically.

    You should also provide a horizontal part at the very bottom of the canvas. This will help extend the life of the door.

    As a result we have door leaf will consist of 3 parts:

    1. Horizontal bottom cross member.
    2. Shield made of vertical boards.
    3. Upper cross member. It is also the arched part.

    After all 3 parts of the door are ready, we connect them using the tenon method. To do this, we use a milling cutter to perform the appropriate operations and place all 3 parts on glue. Don't forget to support the canvas with wedges.

    The final stage is treating the entire surface of the door with a protective agent and finishing coat. Pinotex or any other wood protection is suitable for this.

    If the door will always be on the sunny side, it is not recommended to cover it with laminating coatings. In this case, it is better to use ordinary colorless varnish for exterior use.

    How to make an arch for a doorway with your own hands

    Arches for doorways have been used since ancient times. The arch is very aesthetic, today it is not only beautiful, but also allows you to save space, complement the interior and carry out the work yourself, with your own hands.

    As a rule, plasterboard is used, it is not expensive, it is easy to work with and you can make any arched opening. The frame of the arches can be anything, you can install a platband and a variety of finishing materials.

    Shape selection

    The type of arch can be any, even from several levels, with different nearby and functionality, the correct measurement of the door opening is initially made. The main types of arches are presented in the table:

    Once the contours of the arch have been drawn, cut out the shape using a jigsaw or regular knife. All cuts are made exactly along the lines; the quality of the arched opening depends on this. The classic version of arches is made according to the following principle:

    1. You need to measure the doorway and calculate the material.
    2. The instrument is being prepared.
    3. A template of arches, semicircular, round, oval and others is cut out.
    4. The frame is mounted in the opening using a metal profile or wood.
    5. Polyurethane, plasterboard, plywood, fiberboard, chipboard, foam plastic or other selected material are installed.
    6. The bottom of the arch is cut out and screwed to the side parts.
    7. The arch is being puttyed, finished and decorated.

    Important! When deciding on the type of arches, you need to pay attention to the height of the ceiling and the width of the door opening. Some types are suitable for a wide but low opening, while others are the opposite.

    The main forms are as follows:

    1. Portal - U-shaped arch, according to the design it can be in the form of waves or with many angles, one of the most popular types of opening.
    2. Classic arch - recommended for use for ceilings over 3 m, with a passage width of 90 cm.
    3. Romance - it is recommended to install it if the width of the opening is large, but the height to the ceiling is small.
    4. Modern is an alternative to any type of arches; it can be used in Khrushchev, where every centimeter of space is important. The corners of the arch are made sharp or rounded.
    5. A semi-arch is an ideal arch for zoning rooms.
    6. Straight arch - suitable for loft, hi-tech, modern style.

    DIY plasterboard arch (video)

    Materials for work

    You can’t just build an arch; you need to choose the material and prepare all the equipment. Plasterboard sheet is most often used, it is easy to work with, you can remake the arch if desired, and its cost is low. Therefore, an example of working with gypsum boards will be described step by step below. An arched interior opening requires:

    1. GKL 9.5 mm.
    2. Profiles 27x28 mm and 60x27 mm.
    3. Self-tapping screws for attaching 3.5x25 mm drywall.
    4. Dowels to secure the frame in a 6x60 mm opening. Used for brick or concrete.
    5. Self-tapping screws with press washer 4.2x12 mm.
    6. If the doorway is made of timber, then you need wood screws.
    7. Putties for gypsum boards.
    8. Needle roller.
    9. Perforated corners.
    10. Spatula.
    11. Pencil and tape measure for measuring and drawing.
    12. Screwdriver.

    Having prepared the material, you need to mark and measure everything.

    Measurements

    Before , how to make an arch from plasterboard, measurements are taken in the doorways. The size of the opening itself is taken in height and width. When there is width, it is divided in two to create a perfect semicircle arch. The shape of the arch is determined for classic version You will need to additionally level the walls using putty and beacons. Naturally, the opening needs to be completely disassembled, prepared by removing dirt and dust from it, and if necessary, seal the cracks and voids with mortar. When the opening is ready, you can proceed to the next steps.

    Installation of an interior arch

    On the gypsum board, an arch design is made for a private house or apartment, the necessary picture is drawn, and then cut out with a knife, strictly along the lines. When one piece is cut correctly, a new side is drawn along its contours and another piece is cut out. Having prepared both pieces, you can mount them on the frame, but before that the correct frame is built. The work will look like this step by step:

    • At the top of the opening, the profiles are fastened using dowels if the opening is brick. After this, the profile must be installed on the walls of the opening. The frame is mounted at two points of the door passage.
    • Next, a profile is made in the form of an arc. Using scissors, you need to cut through the metal every 5-10 cm, after which the metal is bent to the desired shape. Previously cut pieces of drywall are used for the template. Installation is carried out with dowels, and the frame is covered with plasterboard using self-tapping screws. For arches you need 2 arcs.

    Profile for arch construction

    • To make the frame strong, bars or pieces of profile are installed between the arches.
    • The frame is ready, but the arch itself is not yet made. You will need to bend the drywall for installation at the bottom of the arch or make a composite element, the prefabricated bottom is made from pieces of drywall, and when bending you need to cut a piece, adding 10 cm to the sides. To prevent the material from cracking, it is wetted with a little water, passed with a needle roller and left for a couple of hours so that it is flexible. After this, you can bend the material and attach it to the frame, initially using tape and then self-tapping screws.
    • After 12 hours, the beautiful arched opening will be ready and all that remains is to design and decorate the arch.

    Here's how easy it is to install an arch in a doorway with your own hands. Using these tips, the production of arches will be fast. All voids in the arch can be left unchanged, or you can use polyurethane foam, pouring it inside according to the instructions. Next, you need to cover your creation.

    Doorway design

    What to make arches in a doorway from is known, but how to decorate an arch in a doorway? You can decorate the finished structure different materials. Often the design is done using MDF, it can be finished modern material, For example, artificial stone, wood, wallpaper, paint and apply solid wood. When the arch opens into the kitchen, it is recommended to secure the curtain by immediately installing fasteners in the arch. Before sheathing and decorating the arch, you need to do a number of works, step-by-step instructions below:

    • The surface of the arch is sanded with sandpaper, removing irregularities, creating a rounded edging.
    • Seams, joints and places of self-tapping screws must be sealed using putty, but before this it is placed on a perforated corner plastic corner, you need to fix it directly into the putty.

    Puttying the arch of the doorway

    • When the putty dries, sand everything again with sandpaper to remove any unevenness.
    • The arch is coated with a primer and when it dries, it is applied finishing putty and sanded one last time.

    The arrangement of the arch is completed, you need to select the finishing and place it on the finished opening. As you can see, it’s easy to make a homemade arched opening; anyone can assemble the frame and fix the drywall, not necessarily a master, even if they have little experience. It is recommended to make an arch, the same shape as the window, so that the interior is unified, although the opening itself can be modernized so that the house or cottage is transformed and functional. Finally, a video showing the work process, how much material is needed and how to make a rectangular arched opening with a rounded top:

Arched structures have long been used in construction and renovation. Previously, arches were used in the design of housing and other objects that belonged to noble people. Luxurious churches, palaces and other similar structures were the main places where arched structures were used. In those days, creating them was not as easy as it is today. It is for this reason that they began to spread only in the 20th century. Progress does not stand still, and with the development of technology, the arrangement of arches has become accessible to many segments of the population.

Arched entrance doors are more durable compared to the classic design, since solid wood is used to create them. Some customers ask that the doors be sheathed with metal.

Nowadays, this is not a luxury, but one of the popular ways to decorate the interior of a room and design a building. A do-it-yourself arched door according to our drawings will decorate any room and make its design original.

When conducting individual construction in the interior you can use arched openings for doors and windows, as well as when decorating the ceiling, etc. The design of the arched door, which you can see in the video, is attractive and sophisticated.

Types of arched doors

Nowadays, various arches are often used when decorating residential and other premises. These can be entrance or interior openings. They can be very different, but if you think about classification, you can distinguish several categories:

  1. The semicircular type is the most common.
  2. Gothic arches. They are distinguished by elongated shapes, lack of smooth lines and a pointed top.

It’s not so simple - the first option can be divided into several more subcategories, namely:

  1. Classic option. Assumes the usual semicircular shape.
  2. Ellipsoidal. The name speaks for itself: their shape resembles an elongated oval.
  3. Modern style. It gives the arches original shapes that have different transitions and protrusions.
  4. Romantic option. It is very simple as it has a rectangular shape with a rounded top.
  5. Arches in the form of horseshoes. The design of these arches involves semicircular shapes and shapes with a pointed top. This option is usually found in the interiors of some national cultures.

Classification

An arched interior door can visually expand small corridors. Arched doors can be classified according to different parameters, for example, according to the material used or design features. Another classification feature is the location of the door installation. According to the last feature, arched doors, as in the video, can be divided into:

  1. Interior. They are placed indoors, made of wood and often have glass and mosaic elements in their design.
  2. Input. These arched doors are used in various public buildings such as shops. They are also used when designing government agencies, entertaining and shopping centers. Their assembly involves the use of plastic profiles.

The next classification feature is the material from which arched doors are made. The choice here is not very wide. This is due to the complexity and difficulties in the production of arched doors. On this basis, arched doors can be divided into:

  1. Plastic. Profile structures are created from plastic, from which arched doors and windows are created.
  2. Wooden. Wood is recommended to be used for internal doors, but in private construction it is also used to create entrance doors.

Design features

Based on their design features, arched doors are divided into the following categories:

  1. Doors are shaped to match the opening. It takes a lot of time to create a structure of this type. Not everyone can afford their cost. The material used to create these arched doors is wood.
  2. A door leaf that has a standard solution with an arch designed above it. This version of the arched door has a low cost, since the semicircular part is installed separately from the door leaf and remains motionless. In this case, you can use several door options - sliding and hinged.
  3. Single-leaf doors. They are used to decorate premises. Such structures are also allowed as entrance doors.
  4. If the opening is wide, it is better to give preference to double doors. You can fix one of the parts in the opening using a latch.

DIY arched door

Making an arched door with your own hands according to our video is not the easiest thing, but performing this operation is quite possible. We'll tell you how it happens and give you a few useful tips on creating an arched door. Note that it is better to make the frame for such a door to order. To do this, decide on the size and contact a professional. Assembling the door leaf itself involves a simpler technology - you can handle it.

Tools and materials

To work you will need certain materials and tools. Here is their list:

  • jigsaw with wood files;
  • electric milling machine (cutters should be of two types - disk and cylindrical);
  • boards 5 cm thick;
  • belt sander;
  • wooden wedges;
  • waterproof glue;
  • bars and screws.

How to make an arch?

To make an arch of a door leaf with your own hands, you will need the width of the opening in its pure form. You can calculate it very simply: subtract the thickness of the box and the gap (2-3 mm) from the total width.

At the next stage, decide on the dimensions of the arch. For a harmonious look, it should be equal to half the width of the doorway. Having determined this, proceed to calculate the number of boards. The boards should be placed horizontally.

When installing a fixed arch into an existing cavity, you can hide cables and wires. For work, use thoroughly dried material. Using an electric router, make the grooves. The protruding part of the groove should be 2.5 mm. Make all grooves by analogy with the first.

Free the inner surfaces of the grooves from dust and sawdust, and then treat them with glue. Next, connect all the parts and fix them motionless for complete drying.

Next you need to make a semicircle. The technology is similar to working with plasterboard sheets. After marking the semicircular workpiece, it should be cut with a jigsaw. Next use grinder with coarse sandpaper, and then use fine sandpaper.

The remaining part of the door is created according to the principle described above. The only difference is the position of the boards - it will be vertical.

Please note that the finished door leaf consists of three parts:

  • lower horizontal;
  • shield made of vertical boards;
  • upper arched part.

So, you now know general technology creating a wooden arched door.

The topic of this article is the manufacture of arched doors, their installation and the intricacies of these processes. We will talk about the types of doors with arches, note their varieties and the features of each type. We will also give recommendations for making your own entrance door in the form of an arch from solid wood.

Today, arched openings of various shapes and styles are used in the construction and decoration of most premises. They are used as entrance and interior doors.

From the whole variety of doorways in the form of arches (see), the following classification can be made:

Stained glass compositions are often used for glazing such structures (see).
  2. Entrance doors in the form of arches- are used mainly in the entrance groups of establishments: shops, organizations, shopping and entertainment centers. Made from plastic profile.

What are arched doors made of?

Due to the complexity of manufacturing this type of door leaf, the variety of material for their production is not very abundant:

  1. Plastic. This material is used to produce profiles from which not only entrance doors are made, but also windows.
  2. Solid wood. Wooden door leaves in the shape of arches are used for entrance areas in the private sector, as well as inside any type of premises.

Structural features of arched doors

Based on the characteristics of operation, the complexity of installation and the cost of the finished product, the following arched door structures can be distinguished:

  • Canvases that repeat the contours of the opening one to one. The peculiarity of such doors is that their production takes a long time. They stand quite high. Such models are made from wood (see), since arched plastic doors are made using a different technology.

They are usually used as interior and entrance options for private houses and public spaces.

It is better to order the box part according to your dimensions, and we will make the canvas with our own hands (see).

We prepare everything you need

First you need to prepare tools, boards and available materials.

We will need:

After this, we take a grinding machine with the coarsest sandpaper and process the surface of our arched part of the door on both sides. After this, we repeat grinding with a finer abrasive.

Now the most beautiful part of our door is ready. Arched interior doors can be decorated with the same elements. However, it is worth considering that glazed arches will be more elegant for interior spaces.

As a result, our door leaf will consist of 3 parts:

In the life of any person, repairs occur from time to time. It may be associated with the purchase of a new house or apartment, with the desire to update the interior of a familiar home. One way to organize space is to create arched structures. Arches in a house can perform two completely different functions: unifying space when an arch is placed instead of doors; division of a large area to highlight several zones with different functions.

Of these two options, the arch in the doorway is more common, giving more interesting view apartment layout. When replacing a door with an arch, it is necessary to consider the pros and cons of such a solution. The undoubted advantages for small apartment refers to the expansion of space. By combining a kitchen and a small room, you can create a dining room where it will be convenient and pleasant to dine with family or friends.

If in long and narrow corridor If several arches are installed, then the feeling of narrow passages like in a train carriage disappears.

If an informed decision has been made to install the arch, then we proceed to choosing the shape of the decorative structure:

  • Rectangular;
  • Semicircular, having an equilateral rounding;
  • Semi-arch having only one rounded corner;
  • Trapezoidal, the design of which consists of curved lines;
  • Fantasy.

The downside of an arch instead of a door is that you can’t close the door to highlight your piece in the apartment. If an arch is placed instead of a kitchen door, the smell of cooking food will spread everywhere.

How to make an arch in a doorway

Once the shape has been determined, it is recommended to make a template from cardboard, fiberboard or other available materials. Creating a template helps you visualize the final result and more accurately calculate quantities necessary materials. When designing, we take into account that installing an arch in an existing doorway will reduce its height by approximately 10-15 cm. If the dimensions of the opening are not sufficient for implementation design ideas or the apartment owners are enough tall people, then you will have to increase the height of the doorway. Changing the height or width requires large costs, including labor, financial and time to coordinate the redevelopment in the relevant organizations. Determining the shape and creating a template are the first stages of making an arch.

They are followed:

  • Dismantling the old door frame (if this has not been done previously);
  • Preparing the wall surface for arch installation;
  • Creating a frame;
  • Installation of an arched structure;
  • Finishing and decoration.

All this work can be entrusted to professionals, but if you have the desire, you can do everything yourself.

Instructions: how to make an arch with your own hands

The cheapest and most common material for constructing an arch, as for many other works, is drywall. Dismantling the old one door frame. For more modern designs it's simple. You just need to unscrew the screws and carefully remove the trim. Old houses present various surprises to their owners. In ancient times, nails were used to secure the trim to the bars.

Carelessness during such work can lead to the destruction of ceilings or their damage.

After dismantling, we carefully evaluate the intermediate result of the work. The former doorway and the wall next to it should be clean, smooth, and without serious damage. Therefore, when cracks and chips are detected, we putty, this will help subsequently finish them correctly and efficiently. If you plan to level the walls with plasterboard, then this can be combined with the construction of an arch.

When the doorway is prepared, a U-shaped frame made of metal profile. It consists of one horizontal segment equal to the width of the doorway and two vertical ones, the length of which corresponds to our future design. The frame should be on both sides of the opening, that is, we actually make two of them. Two rows of 10 cm holes are marked and drilled in the profile. Then holes are marked and drilled using a hammer drill at the ends of the wall. The guides are attached to the walls.

It's time to use the pre-cut template. Sheets of drywall are marked along it, two parts for each arch are cut out using a jigsaw and attached with self-tapping screws to the installed profiles. It is also necessary to mount a profile along the edges of the attached template parts. As we look at how to make a semicircular arch, important stage is to give the drywall profile the appropriate shape. To do this, we cut the edges of the letter P of our profile to the full height. The profile becomes obedient and takes on the geometric shape we need. After this, it takes its place along the edges of the cuts.

The next stage requires accuracy and attentiveness. We need to correctly install the arched fragment of our arch. The profile has already been installed, so we measure the length of the arc and the width of our part, cut out a rectangle. The difficulty is that the rectangle doesn't really want to become an arc. If ordinary drywall is used, then the main method of “pacifying” it is wetting and simultaneously imparting the desired shape. But this option may seem difficult to ordinary home craftsmen who are afraid of making mistakes. In this case modern technologies suggest that we use arched plasterboard, which takes a semicircular shape much more easily than regular one. We fasten our part in the usual way, moving from the center of the arch to the edges, and we are almost at the finish line.

We process the edges of the arch, cutting off the excess. After this, we treat the joints and edges of the drywall with perforated paper tape or sickle tape, putty, and process sandpaper. Choosing putty for finishing depends on the future decor of our arch.

There are finishing works left, which we will return to a little later. If you plan to install lamps in the semicircular part of the arch, then you need to do this before you start puttingty. If you are afraid to take on an unfamiliar material, then you can install an arched structure made of plywood. In this case, two methods are possible: the first is similar to working with drywall, the second is described below.

Do-it-yourself door arch: making from plywood

To build such a structure, first measure the size of the arc of the future arch. A rectangle is cut out of a sheet of thin plywood, the width of which is equal to the width of the doorway and the length is equal to the size of the arc. Plywood is a malleable material, so the cut rectangle is evenly moistened, allowed to lie for a short time and bent to be installed in the opening.

It is important to place the cut out part evenly and neatly; this will require some skill.

Be sure to secure the part with self-tapping screws in the center, then along the edges. We fill the space between the resulting semicircular arch and the walls polyurethane foam and wait for it to dry. If there is a lot of free space, then part of it can be filled with foam parts, and the remaining free space with foam. We cut off the excess foam and putty on the facade of our arch using sickle.

Less common designs are arches made of wood and brick. Despite the beauty and durability of such arches, their installation requires more expensive materials and the participation of professional craftsmen. The most interesting stage left in creating an arch in a doorway with your own hands is finishing. Various decorative materials can be used here.

Most common:

  • Wallpapering;
  • Decorative plaster;
  • Coloring;
  • Gluing finished foam finishing elements;
  • Usage decorative stone and other types of finishing.
